[ FIVE QUESTIONS TO... ]
MAURIZIO FABIANI PRESIDENT OF FABIANI YACHT by Paola Bertelli
What direction is today’s yacht market heading in? In short you could say that it’s heading off in all directions. There are many producers and they’re all jostling to create more space for themselves. To enable them to compete on several fronts producers are aiming to create their own line. Some identify a basic style to embody in different ways, in a range of sizes and versions, while others offer different types – for example, luxury, cabin, open, classic and open designs. We are also now seeing the introduction of hybrid models, but these present some difficult challenges for producers. How does Fabiani Yacht position itself on the international scene? It’s more than a position, Fabiani Yacht has identified locations, confident that it can express itself most of all through its talent for innovation. Until now our theatre of operations has been the Mediterranean, but that doesn’t rule out commercial initiatives in the opposite hemisphere, where we’re sounding out opportunities. Innovation, alternative energies, respect for the environment - Fabiani Yacht has revolutionary approach to these matters, but what are the most important aspects?
14
While the revolution is real and concrete, it cannot be separated from the intrinsic innovation based on a series of patents. Our models are and will be produced in two versions – the so-called Classics, and the corresponding Hybrids. The dimensions in each section are 65’, 70’, 77’, 100’ and 101’. The differences between Classics and Hybrids impose quite significant methodological, technical and structural adaptations.
What are the main characteristics? The most important design effort was focussed on the Hybrids. They can sail long distances with great autonomy at zero cost and in total silence. Every version, then, exists in two forms – Diesel with speed and long range, and a green version powered by banks of retractable solar cells or, in the case of the 100’ Hybrid version, with large structural sails that can also capture the movement of the wind. What projects are you working on at the moment? At the moment we’re building a 77’ hybrid yacht with an aluminium superstructure and a bank of retractable solar cells. Its two Man V12 1900 hp diesel engines power the yacht to a cruising speed of 25 knots and a maximum speed of 28 knots, and in electric mode with two 100 Kw electric motors it can sail at 5-8 knots for seven hours.
[ FIVE QUESTIONS TO... ]
JAN TIMMERMAN CEO AT ROYAL HUISMAN by Désirée Sormani
What is the state of the yacht market in the Netherlands at the moment and how do things look for Royal Huisman? I can’t comment on the Dutch yacht market, but our shipyard has a strong new-build order book and an impressive array of refit, conversion and restoration projects for Huisfit.
architects of choice, our clients can start dreaming because we can build it and make their dream a reality! We can offer motoryacht clients the expertise we have acquired from our unrivalled 55 years’ experience in building aluminium sailing yachts. This enables us to maximise performance and efficiency through compact, lightweight and high strength engineering.
Royal Huisman is synonymous with sailing at its most glorious. Why did you decide to embrace motoryachts? Is this the start of a new era for RH? Our reputation is indeed largely built on a very nice portfolio of over 30 innovative low-profile sailing superyachts. That said, the team’s passion for the perfection, expertise, flexibility and continuous innovation behind these projects is not limited to sailing yachts. We are delighted our motoryacht owners accepted expert advice and came to Royal Huisman with their highly distinctive visions. We will continue to build unique superyachts: both sail and power. We are not going massively into motoryachts, however. Our future will probably be 50-50 or so.
What do clients nowadays want? Seen as a whole, our current projects really do illustrate what our clients want: from sailing yachts to motoryachts, from classic to contemporary, each with its individual focus. The common denominator is the owners’ quest for build perfection as well as proven ingenuity in delivering innovation.
Your first two motoryacht projects - Phi (just launched) and the Sportfisher - are radically different yachts. Was this a strategic move in terms of your motor market entry? The individual aspirations and challenges involved in both of these projects were well outside the comfort zone of many other yards. The Royal Huisman team welcomed these fresh opportunities for creative problem solving and innovation very enthusiastically. By partnering with well-respected designers and 16
Could you please explain Royal Huisman’s approach to alternative new propulsion systems? Sustainability is crucially important for all of us and for future generations. At Royal Huisman, we know that some owners positively encourage their design and build teams to make a difference by, for example, making their superyachts more efficient, or by applying renewable energy sources. Sometimes the obvious is not so obvious at all, such as the huge source of energy out on the ocean: wind! It frequently surprises me that the majority of superyachts are not (yet) sail-powered. Wind propulsion will always beat energy consumption onboard motoryachts. In addition to this, wind energy is ‘free’ – of charge, of fumes, and of noise. And, of course, helming a sailing yacht is great fun into the bargain...!
Monday to Thursday business meetings in PHOENIX2, on Friday a 6-hour executive board meeting at the company’s GLOBAL HQ, and next week the same again, jetting from one meeting to the next – always AVANTI, AVANTI! And then finally: Vacations with my family. A week off, just us: my wife VALERIE and our kids. What a contrast, what an OASIS of peace. Our son RONIN, an ACE in sports, in the CORAL OCEAN all day long – wind-surfing, wakeboarding, kitesurfing. Our daughters AMADEA and TITANIA enjoying their school holidays on board the spacious yacht, too. My wife and I, swimming in the main deck’s infinity pool, and later indulging in A+ quality dinning. In the evenings, we’d go down to the cinema to watch movies, or we’d sit on deck, looking into the star-lit sky over the PACIFIC, just to wake up the next morning, pampered by the RISING SUN’s first warm beams. Tell you what – the opportunities to recharge the batteries were simply LIMITLESS! Anything can happen onboard a LÜRSSEN:

ALESSIO LUCIANI MARKETING COORDINATOR OF DORNBRACHT ITALIA by Marta Bernasconi
What trends are you seeing in the luxury bathroom fittings sector? Quality finishes are an important factor. Chrome or steel finishes are becoming less popular – the current trend is for warmer colours. What materials, finishes and functions are your products featuring? An increasingly prestigious look for handles and accessories, from galvanised finishes enhanced by textured surfaces to natural stones set in the taps and leather and natural fabric inserts. In the yacht-building world especially the demand is almost always for custom working and finishes. In the yacht-building sector, what collaborations are you finding especially rewarding? It’s a field that offers exceptional prospects. Demand for new yachts is rising, and for refits, too. We have long-standing partnerships with the main Italian and international yards and there is an increasing call for furnishings from smaller yards involved in refit projects. Nowadays, to avoid the lack of raw materials caused by the pandemic, which is generating delays and threatens to derail future contracts the yards are ordering products well in advance to ensure availability. What are the aesthetics and performance of Dornbracht’s yahct-building products? We’re mainly receiving commissions for personalisation and coordinated products. Designers and owners often ask us for bespoke solutions that also include third-party products like radiators, cisterns and shower-stall hinges with the same finish as the taps. Private wellness is a particularly thriving area – these days all yards are designing large showers in owner’s cabins with a range of functions like hydrotherapy, so they are fully-equipped wellness areas in themselves. The quality of our products enables us to provide outstanding performance without the need for any special maintenance.
Founded in 1950, Dornbracht is a German brand that is a leader in the high-end taps and design accessory sector. Its portfolio includes products for bathrooms, kitchens and spas. Innovative technology and a constant search for the highest performance and aesthetic standards mean that Dornbracht has become a symbol of Made in Germany quality
18
Can you tell us a little about the latest products you’ve presented? This year we’ve launched CYO, an entire line of extremely elegant bathroom taps that reinterpret Dornbracht’s design history with a contemporary spririt. The core element of CYO is a reworking of the classic C-shaped spout that defines the tap’s sculptural lines. It offers many benefits – for example, the water flow is regulated by a crown that provides special tactile feedback (“click-stop”). CYO is also perfect for yachts because the wide range of choices provides great freedom for designers.

ver-focused on sustainability, Lürssen is making huge strides towards emissions-free yachts by building its first vessel powered by fuel cell technology backed up by conventional generators. Designed for a tech-focused owner, this pioneering yacht can anchor emissions-free for 15 days or cruise gently for 1,000 nm. The German yard’s 98m climateneutral yacht is called Alice and very clearly reveals what the Lürssens of tomorrow could well resemble. Although still at the model stage, Alice paves the way for a whole new onboard Wonderland. Parks and ponds on deck pair with living walls in the interior to create a unique onboard ecosystem. Light fast-growing organic wood delivers the same superior aesthetic and tactility as teak. Fuel cells use hydrogen derived from green methanol to generate electric power, replacing conventional diesel generators. However, an extra methanol engine can deliver high speeds and extra energy when required too. Even recovered waste heat emissions are used for both heating and cooling as part of the HVAC system, while mirror glass in the windows surrounding the owner’s deck cleverly reflects heat and insulates at once. www.lurssen.com

The largest yacht ever built by the brand, the Ferretti Yachts 1000 revolutionises time spent on the water while showcasing ‘Made in Italy’ design and craftsmanship. yacht is the ultimate form of escape, but sometimes the need for comfort and wellbeing can be lost to extravagance and showmanship. Today, a yacht should be a grounding and liveable space, and this is the philosophy behind Ferretti Yachts’ new flagship, which introduces a new elegant and modern interior concept where a sense of space prevails and a new way of experiencing the yachting lifestyle is presented. Versatile and suited to all markets, the Ferretti Yachts 1000 reshapes space and changes the whole approach to life on board with unprecedented design solutions and an interior mood developed to adapt to each owner’s various needs. Epic, the first Ferretti Yachts 1000, features ‘classic’ styling, with a mood defined by soft, balanced colour tones and subtle contrasts. The alternative option is contemporary styling, with fresh tones and bolder colours. At the heart of the project is the idea of unparalleled comfort and wellbeing in both outdoor and indoor areas. The concept of space and ergonomics is expressed by a generous saloon overlooking the water. Here, the relationship with the surrounding environment is intensified by large full-height windows that accentuate the feeling of contact with the water and let natural light flood in. Created using a new construction solution, the windows can be fitted on request with opening mechanisms on both sides to create a terrace-like sensation on the water. Continuous contact with the marine environment has a direct impact on wellbeing, and this idea is further reflected with a redefined stern concept consisting of 40sqm of liveable space. It is a beach club in the truest sense of the term, where direct access to the swim platform from the cockpit creates an outdoor wellness area close to the water’s edge: a new place for adventure and fun, where the owner can create their own experience in an unprecedented open space for socialising and enjoying the water. The suavely understated interior design, featuring clean lines and sophisticated materials, conveys a sense of refined luxury. The fine upholstery and fabrics create a pleasing sensation of softness, warmth and comfort that contrasts with the sheen of marble and glass. The ceilings throughout the yacht feature different materials and fabrics in the colour shade best suited to the space in question, ensuring optimum visual comfort as well. Entering the living space on the main deck reveals the use of the two contrasting types of wood featured throughout the boat. Walnut wood is deployed throughout the interiors in various ways: flame-coloured and bold for the furniture, striped and softer for the walls and ribbed for special accents. The play on contrasts between warm tones and paler, more delicate nuances is also echoed by the furniture. Designed by Minotti, they include a large Alexander model corner sofa upholstered in ecru fabric, a Side model low table with leather clad panels, a Zebrino marble top sunk into the structure and a Tape model velvet armchair. Born from an accurate analysis of the empathetic relationship between humans and space, the versatility of the Ferretti Yachts 1000 offers any owner an exclusive and personalised space to live in as their dream home, surrounded by the sea.

erretti Yachts 1000 was a complex and fascinating challenge; designing the flagship for a storied and successful brand like Ferretti Yachts is both a pleasure and a responsibility. When you design a boat that forms part of a family, it is important to take a more organic approach, maintaining continuity with the past and looking at the evolutionary heritage of the brand’s lines and identity. It is essential to know how to investigate the distinctive features that have characterised it and contributed to its success, and to be able to recognise their full value in a process of unifying past and future. As a result, the yacht is a product that fully reflects the Ferretti Yachts philosophy; a combination of maritime spirit, functionality and elegance, with a style that is as pure and essential as it is aggressive. It is not just a question of style though, but more importantly of volumes and proportions, because a wide-body boat with incredible internal volumes like the Ferretti Yachts 1000 must be perfectly balanced and proportioned to stay sporty and dynamic. The idea behind Ferretti Yachts 1000 was to rethink traditional on-board flows. First of all, we eliminated the forward stairways in the midship section, creating two aft stairways halfway between the living area/cockpit and the lobby, separated by the lounge. This has enabled us to eliminate the dead spaces usually found in this area. By eliminating the forward stairways, we have recovered a huge amount of interior space in the owner’s area and galley, enabling us to open the entire lounge out onto the cockpit and then to the water. This is a highly versatile boat designed for the European and American markets, with a galley that can be opened up American-style for owners who want a more convivial experience on board, transformed into a bar for use as a living area or completely closed off for more privacy.
Below, sporty lines dominate a profile featuring new glass side panels aft and amidships. Opposite, the spacious bow area is furnished symmetrically with sofas and dinettes that can also be transformed into a generous sun pad

esigning the interiors of the largest boat ever built by Ferretti Yachts, in such a way as to recreate the comfort and intimacy typically found in a home, is a challenge that inspired us to explore new paradigms and new interior design moods for the yachting world. The brief was to offer the client the feeling of living in an intimate and familiar environment, while at the same time luxurious and exclusive, with a special focus on functionality and storage space. It had to be an interior that instils the same confidence in the owner as when they are in their own home. Italy, harmony, comfort, craftsmanship and refinement are some of the keywords that guided our definition of the style we wanted to permeate every setting with discretion and precision. The objects and historical periods that inspired us included classic Italian architecture, with all its tradition and variety, as well as Italian furniture design from the 1950s and 60s, which remains timeless and modern even today. The design of Ferretti Yachts 1000 has thus become a mix of elegance and sobriety that is contemporary but aligned with traditional stylistic features in both yachting and manufacturing. Materials and geometries blend together in harmony to convey the welcoming comfort of a familiar setting. The versatility of the interiors translates into a modular layout, where the freestanding furniture and accessories have a distinctly residential feel and leave the owner with plenty of scope for customisation. The ceiling geometries and materials, the design of the walls, and the details of the furniture all soften and lighten up the setting, make it even more welcoming. Our main focus was on the concept of space and ergonomics, creating a large living area directly overlooking the water, a galley the like of which has never been seen on a yacht of this size, and a master cabin that is unique in its kind.
The owner’s suite on the main deck has a spacious walk-in wardrobe with a small sofa. Below, accommodation for a further eight guests in four cabins can be found on the lower deck. erretti Yachts 1000 is the largest boat ever built by the brand. The product of a design process inspired by the search for perfection, the new flagship is a truly impressive project, made of talent and technology, the ability to innovate, and craftsmanship. Ferretti Yachts 1000 is the result of collaboration between the Strategic Product Committee led by Mr. Piero Ferrari, the Ferretti Group Engineering Department, architect Filippo Salvetti for the exteriors, and IdeaeITALIA for the new interior concept. Our focus with the project was on reshaping the spaces to rearrange the whole approach to life on board, creating a new design solution developed to adapt to the owner’s needs in terms of space. We now want to bring this new interior concept to all the brand’s models. Furthermore, the Italian signature is very effective in our product and something we wanted to keep as the distinctive feature of our future products. This is why we chose IdeaeITALIA, a firm that truly believes in ‘Made in Italy’. They also perfectly understood our needs in creating the Ferretti Yachts 1000: to give more space to the owner, but at the same time maintain all the details and all the comfort that is typical of the brand. Given her national premiere at the Venice Boat Show, visitors were unanimously and immediately impressed by the extremely elegant and comfortable interior and exterior design. Ferretti Yachts 1000 was also showcased in Monaco, during our Private Preview event dedicated to customers and prospects, and at the Cannes Yachting Festival. The feedback was resoundingly positive because the new owners required not only a ‘simple’ means of transport for holidays at sea, but a place to live, a space in which to find the aspects you love the most, and a place to spend your time with a feeling of home, and Ferretti Yachts 1000 represents all these features.

BOUNDLESS INNOVATION by Samuela Urbini
Since the 1980s, Pininfarina has been designing the interiors and exteriors of unconventional yachts. That vivid creativity is the fruit of the cross-fertilisation between the nautical division and the other expert teams in the international group responsible for crafting all kinds of transportation, architecture and industrial design

plus history, it has evolved from humble beginnings as an artisanal workshop into an international group. Founded in 1930, it bodied some of the most beautiful cars ever built, models and one-offs that themselves wrote spectacular chapters in the history of design. Today it employs a workforce of over 500 skilled individuals in its offices in Italy, Germany, China and the US, working across the board in everything from cars to yachts, architecture and industrial design. All of its products share three core values: elegance, purity and innovation. Its nautical division merits a close look too as it has very deep roots, stretching all the way back to the 1980s. A powerhouse of impeccable design in its own right, it has flanked the leading international yards on bespoke yachts of the like of the Fincantieri Ottantacinque, Rossinavi Aurea, Super Sport 50 and 65, Tango Wallycento, as well as restyling entire lines, as was the case with Princess.

mocean has finally arrived. Making her debut at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival, the RSY 38m EXP is the first model by Rosetti Superyachts and reflects the tastes and requirements of experienced owners who wanted a yacht on board which they can spend long periods in complete comfort and safety, in all sea conditions. The design was initially conceived and developed by the owners in collaboration with Sergio Cutolo and Hydro Tec. “After their experience on a 26-metre fibreglass yacht the owners really wanted a robust vessel with a steel hull that would enable them to sail in all the world’s seas, even in challenging weather conditions”, says Andrea Giora, Sales Director and Board Member of RSY. “They specified large interior volumes, a 5,000-mile range and systems that are easily accessible for maintenance. These features are typical requirements for an Explorer yacht, but the owners also wanted a design that was closer to look of a normal yacht, especially the navette type. They also asked for large windows that can be opened where possible, providing natural light and fresh air”. The owners relied heavily on the expertise of the shipyard and its parent company Rosetti Marino Group, a solid organisation that is proudly approaching its 100th anniversary and is also listed on the Milan Stock Exchange. They wanted to be closely involved in all aspects of the yacht’s design and construction, so they immediately established a relationship with the builder and suppliers, selecting the best contractor for each element to be installed. “Emocean is the fulfilment of their dream, a yacht they’ve developed and refined over years of study of existing models. Every space has been designed and optimised to host the systems and facilities that are vital for safe sailing and on-board comfort”, says Giora. The lines of the RSY 38m EXP are bold and elegant. The exterior design reflects the yacht’s functionality and reliability, key requirements for the owners. Although at first glance the lines are not exactly those of an explorer yacht, the specifications leave no doubt - extensive stowage facilities ensuring prolonged independence from ports, palatial internal and external volumes, 3,000 litres of refrigerator and freezer capacity and no less than 700 square meters of floor space in the interiors and exteriors. Guests board the yacht via the aft cockpit, which blends seamlessly into the main lounge boasting a pair of Moroso Gogan sofas forward of the ventilation trunks. This reduces the beam and creates a transitional area between the main deck lobby and the dining room. “This solution was shaped by the owner’s desire that the aft section of the saloon should be entirely open”, says Sergio Cutolo, who also handled the layout and general arrangement. “The owner intended this as a social area, mainly used for bathing and acting as a spacious swim platform. The partition that usually separates the dining area from the main lobby amidships has been eliminated”. Although this may at first seem to impose limitations, in fact it provided a significant design stimulus. The owners chose this as the location, close to the dining area, for a spectacular 150-bottle glass and steel wine cellar. Attention then shifts to the lobby, the focal architectural element of the main deck. Here a bespoke sculpture by Giacinto Bosco stands in a central position in the stairwell, just below the skylight which sheds light from the sundeck onto the lower deck. The stairs lead to a bright upper deck lounge that acts as the main saloon. The interior design, created by BurdissoCapponi Yachts&Design, is modern and contemporary, resembling a comfortable home. The interior style is based on the use of light Creta oak, dark smoked oak and materials with a 3-dimensional presence. The open-plan layout is divided into a succession of spaces, each with a distinctive emotional impact created by pieces of furniture with clean, essential lines, part of the yacht’s architecture. The furniture’s character is expressed through the details. The spacious master stateroom is on the main deck. It has a clever lay-out and a fixed side balcony accessible through a sliding glass door. The owners chose this solution because it can be used without requiring help from the crew, thus ensuring greater privacy. It includes a private office, a walk-in wardrobe and a large his & her bathroom. Here the surfaces are finished in raw and brushed silk Georgette marble. There are also two double and two twin guest cabins on the lower deck, on the same level as the beach area. Of course, the yacht also offers many cosy, relaxing open-air areas where guests can enjoy the sea and experience the emotions suggested by the yacht’s name. https://rosettisuperyachts.it

The yacht features many cosy, relaxing open-air areas. The exterior loose furniture is by Talenti. Guests are welcomed aboard from the cockpit aft, which segues seamlessly into the main lounge (opening pages). T
he project grew from the owners’ desire for a motoryacht providing convenience, versatility and the seafaring qualities and range of a true Explorer, a crossover combining a luxury yacht that respects the environment and is compatible with the modern lifestyle of a young couple and their family with a pocket-size ship that can cope with long voyages and spend long periods of time out of port. It would be a yacht made to measure for the owner who inspired it, guiding and directing every layout choice. Of course, we handled the engineering and the stylistic aspects. The owner accepted our initial style concept, and only intervened in shaping the external spaces. The equilibrium achieved by the external spaces is not the typical of an explorer yacht, or at least the type of explorer we’re used to, with volumes placed more centrally along the length. Two features to note are the size and extent of the glazed surfaces – guests moving around on board never loses contact with the external environment. The hull is a development of our typical displacement hull with optimal bow section and flat, relatively dry stern. This type enables the yacht to achieve exceptionally high efficiency values and excellent sea holding performance. The main deck saloon has been designed in collaboration with the owner, who wanted the main deck to be devoted mainly to formal dining and access to the bathing platform. On board life largely takes place on the upper decks, especially the upper deck saloon and spacious sun deck sheltered by the hard top. Emocean is our first collaboration with RSY and it’s also the yard’s first yacht. Working with such a large, versatile company with exceptional project management skills was a huge challenge for Hydro Tec, one that was successfully overcome alongside the yard, as the commercial success achieved at Cannes clearly shows.

mocean is a yacht designed to sail in all conditions, and as a result it was necessary to pay particular attention to the functional use of space. However, we wanted to develop a style that recalls a Mediterranean villa with large windows and sea terraces. We sought to combine the more nautical element with the informal yet elegant domestic environment. That’s why we chose to take a modern, unconventional, stylistic approach, breaking down the layout of the volumes and creating a diverse perception of space. The 3-dimensional impact of these volumes is enhanced by the materials used. Some ceiling sections are lowered to emphasise the areas below in a more expressive compositional equilibrium. The resulting spaces lend themselves to decorative furnishing, especially the display of works of art that in this way helps define the architecture. Lighting plays a significant role in the project. Here the choice was to differentiate the homogeneous, diffuse general lighting from the more focussed lighting in the areas defined by the lowered ceilings. The initial meetings immediately made it clear that the staircase would become the fulcrum of the project, the functional core. The owners had expressly specified that staircase should be visible from the living area, so we chose to use the vertical partitions as spatial but not visible separation screen from the lobby. The partitions give the interiors an elegant vertical thrust. As for the materials, in line with the owners’ taste and preference we went for materials with emphatically simple, natural colours to create a fresh style with Mediterranean accents, like the Creta Oak in the partitions and walls, with a counterpoint being provided by the vertical Smoked Oak strips emphasising some architectural elements, the stairwell and lobbies.

ince its foundation, we at Rosetti Superyachts have presented ourselves as builders of Explorer-type yachts. It didn’t matter whether the first sale resulted from a concept developed in-house or was developed from project entirely conceived by a client. Emocean adopted the latter strategy – after working several years with engineer Sergio Cutolo of Hydro Tec to develop the general arrangements and technical specifications, the owners investigated the market to find the right yard for them and eventually chose Rosetti Superyachts. Our experience in engineering and building supply vessels up to 85 metres long, the Rosetti Marino group’s financial clout and the opportunity to be involved in the choice of suppliers and the finest materials to use in building their yacht were crucial elements that persuaded the

owners to give us the commission. We also involved architects Francesca Burdisso and Emiliano Capponi for the interior design and construction. Following their long experience with one of the leading yachting groups they had recently opened their studio in Ravenna. We met a series of tough challenges during the build. We constantly sought to optimise the living and technical spaces. For the first time we found ourselves engineering, acquiring and building a yacht, but above all providing a level of interior and exterior finishes that exceeded those required in a commercial vessel. Building the first yacht in Rosetti Marino’s history is exciting
for the whole group. The investment of resources, including finance, was made with great conviction and the recognition we’ve received from the business and in the international media is a great source of pride for the entire group. Following the Cannes Festival, where two letters of intent were signed for a similar 38-metre build and a 40-metre based on the same platform, we are delighted to announce the signing of the sales contract for another RSY 38m EXP. This second boat will enhance our growth. We want to carve out a space as a yard that builds sturdy, reliable craft and develop a reputation for construction quality.

f you had a few million dollars or so to spend on buying a piece by the American artist Jeff Koons, which one would you choose? His iconic Rabbit went under the hammer at Christie’s for 91.1 million dollars in 2019. You can of course, hope to acquire one of his works for a less
eye-watering price, but don’t bank on it. Jeff Koons, born in 1955, remains one of the world’s
highest-paid artists. His creativity is rooted in Marcel Duchamp’s Readymades and the Pop universe of Andy Warhol. Art history has played its part, especially in the famous Gazing Ball series, where the artist places blue glass spheres on reproductions of works by past masters like Praxiteles and Van Gogh. In his hands everyday objects are stripped of their function to become tycoon Dakis Joannou commissioned the American artist to paint his yacht, the 35-metre Guilty, in an unbroken abstract surface where saturated shades of yellow, black and blue combined with pixelated/ typography screen effects evoke the painting technique of Roy Lichtenstein. Most will be familiar with Koons’s polished metal sculptures and installations with references to consumerism and childhood. Maybe becoming father to eight children and grandfather of three has had an influence on his playful approach. Make no mistake, though, those sculptures inspired by kids’ toys, the famous Balloons, serve a deeper purpose than mere entertainment. Although deplored by his detractors Koons is enthusiastically acclaimed by his legions of fans and enjoys resounding success. Posterity will judge the true worth of his work, but meanwhile the effort and commitment he devotes to children’s charities does him great credit. He has been a board member of The International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children (ICMEC) since 2002, and co-founded the

designed by Beatrice Rossetti, produced mainly in two lines, Onda and Buto. The objects have a strong artisanal content, where every piece bears the traces of the skilled craftspeople who have created it, giving it a unique character. This exclusive aesthetic is highlighted by neutral colours, shades of white, sablé, smoke and crab, and by coordinating the pieces with other accessories from the collection. The Cloto vase by young designer Dario Antoniali, for example, is inspired by a spool of yarn, resulting in an object with a strong shape and textural appeal. Also by Beatrice Rossetti, the large porcelain Spoon has a slightly irregular shape that is, in fact, a declaration of originality. The pleasures of making objects by hand and with great care, a table setting to experience without hurry, taking the time to savour and share the experience with fellow diners – the essence Society Limonta seeks to achieve is to approach the true pleasures of life, like sitting at table to enjoy good food, with style and simplicity. www.societylimonta.com

search for space was the driving force behind the Wally team when developing this yacht, the wallywhy200, 27 metres long (but registering below 24). The team had the courage to make radical choices and design a ground-breaking, innovative yacht based on a determination to achieve a balance between functionality and emotion. The group responsible for the wallywhy200 is the Wally design team, led by Luca Bassani, together with the Ferretti Group Engineering Department with the collaboration of the Laurent Giles NA studio for naval architecture and the A. Vallicelli & C studio for interior design. The entire team worked to create an ideal combination of space, comfort and performance. The yacht, with a generous 7.66 metre beam, displays sleek, crisp, futuristic and decisive lines. The Wally Silver livery is interrupted and lightened by long windows – the use of glass is one of the wallywhy200’s main features – and carbon fibre structures. The imposing bow soars 4.70 metres above the waterline, and is lent even more presence by the forward-located full beam structure hosting the upper deck wheelhouse, while the view aft is dominated by the spacious beach platform and the unusual curved teak of the two side sunpads. A measured balance between interior and open-air spaces provides two lounges, two cockpits, a beach club, four cabins, offering 144 square metres of exterior surface and over 200 square metres of living area under cover. This is made possible by the decision to make use of the yacht’s entire width for the interior spaces, which express a rigorous elegance and stylistic coherence. Open-pored teak is the material of choice for the furniture units and the flooring in the lounges and lower deck corridor. The neutral and sand-blasted colours on the walls, clad in recycled, recyclable materials help create a relaxing, natural atmosphere. The sober, well-protected main deck cockpit recalls those on board sail yachts – it has a dining area and a series of small sofas around the side sunpads. Its essentiality makes the cockpit a key element - not only does it introduce guests to the lounge on one side, integrating seamlessly with it, but on the other side the wide central stairway enables it to blend into the swim platform, which transforms into a 32-square-metre beach area when the dropdown sides (which also form the doors to the two lateral garages) are opened. The main saloon is an open-space interior with huge windows bringing the exterior seascape into the yacht. Another striking feature is the floating carbon fibre staircase encapsulated by three glass walls, linking the three decks and allowing natural light from the glazed upper deck cupola to flood the lower deck. This structural staircase has made it possible to eliminate the walls of the saloon, which is now configured with an open kitchen at the entrance and a large conversation area beyond the stairs. Further forward lies the space that has unanimously been acclaimed as providing the yacht’s most exciting wow factor – the owner’s suite. Its materials, furnishings, style and elegance take second place to the sweeping 270° view of the horizon, as wrap-around windows surrounds the double bed in the middle of the room, creating the feeling of directly overlooking the sea. The futuristic glass and carbon fibre upper-deck cupola, whose design recalls the angular shape of the Wallypower models, shelters the wheelhouse and a compact lounge with deep C-shaped sofas. The two interiors are separated by a glass partition that together with the numerous side windows and classic sliding door aft provide views of the sea from all positions. Outside, the dining area is sheltered by an extended structural top with no struts, a design and engineering element that frees and amplifies the lounge space. The VIP cabin and two double guest cabins are on the lower deck, as well as crew quarters.

HY is an acronym for Wally Hybrid Yachts. By “Hybrid” we mean a crossover yacht that offers the comfort and space of a large displacement yacht with the speed and performance of a semi-displacement design. Of course, we’ve made sure that the wallywhy200 fully reflects the Wally philosophy, which has deep roots in both the motor and sail yacht worlds. We started from the conviction that a motor yacht’s exterior form and style must express the craft’s personality, so the question we asked ourselves was, “How do we integrate the dual character of this hybrid yacht? How should we build it and what should it look like?” We tried to find answers by taking an unconventional approach to the project, sticking to three main principles – the hull length should be below 24 metres to optimise running costs, the volumes should provide be 50 per cent more space than other yachts in the same segment and the yacht should be stable and maintain a level trim in displacement and semi-displacement performance regimes. As a result we drew pure, clean lines, seeking to emphasise the dynamic elements associated with speed, creating a strategic combination of soft, flowing curves and sharp lines. The imposing bow is a clear indication of the yacht’s ability to sail at high speeds in total comfort, while the low, spacious and open stern makes it clear just how versatile it is.
A long black glass panel defines the hull profile, taking in windows, air intakes and the side garage doors. A second glass strip runs between the hull and superstructure, including the bow. Guests can enjoy 144 square metres of exterior space

or the new series of wallywhy200 semi-custom yachts we wanted the interior design to reflect the Wally DNA, meaning it should be modern and respond to demand from a range of markets – I’m thinking of the often diverse tastes and requirements of clients in Europe, America, the Middle East and Asia and so on. The wallywhy200 combines classic and modern elements in an extremely functional design whose deceptive simplicity is a product of the brand’s characteristic expertise. We’re certain that a modern yacht must be contemporary, with welcoming interiors, and be designed using materials linked to the maritime tradition as well as modern, hi-tech
and functional finishes like carbon fibre, which is light and strong. In a nutshell, warm, hospitable interiors in perfect harmony with the yacht’s avant-garde exteriors. The interior and exterior spaces set up a dialogue that expresses the successful mix of interiors and exteriors that is typical of Wally designs. The heart of the project is the voluminous bow hosting an owner’s suite offering a 270° view over the sea, a feature that is also made possible by the decision to eliminate deck walkarounds in favour of a full wide-body solution. Another key element is the carbon fibre staircase linking three the decks – a piece of architecture and a structural solution that is also an important factor in the layout of the spaces.
The cockpit is an area of transition, linking the saloon and beach area. It is partly sheltered by the superstructure, while the rest is entirely open-air. Opposite page, the 37-square-metre owner’s suite sits sheer above the sea and provides an uninterrupted 270-degree view around the horizon. e have great confidence in the wallywhy200. It’s made a splash on the international scene with its essential design, typical of Wally Yachts, and its innovative concept. It entirely fulfils the brand’s mission to provide owners with a unique on-board experience. The wallywhy200 is a valuable addition to the Wally motoryacht range and opens up a new market segment as well as a new type of classification based on volume rather than length – the 200 denotes the yacht’s gross tonnage. Along with the Wallytender and Wallypower daycruisers, wallywhy200 is a new-generation design that provides a full, unique response to market demands in terms of space, performance, comfort, design and running costs. This innovative vessel offers the kind of volumes normally associated with superyachts over 30 metres long even though it can be registered at below 24 metres. We took a holistic approach to designing the wallywhy200, with the aim of offering owners a unique experience – the extraordinary owner’s suite is the most obvious example. Its success is also down to the naval architecture developed with the Laurent Giles NA studio, which developed an extremely stable semi-displacement hull with exceptional maritime qualities at all speeds and in all sea conditions.

ozeph Forakis’ earliest exposure to architecture and design came at a time when modernism was the predominant force in the creative and cultural landscapes. Born and raised in New York City to a family of fine artists,
he witnessed the transformation of an urban landscape that was dominated by modernist principles. This, along with regular visits to the Museum of Modern Art, coloured his understanding of design from a young age. To this day, the utopian values of modernism remain etched in Forakis’ mind. “I hold onto the promise of solving everyday problems and contributing to our everyday sense of joy,” he explains. “In its full democratic potential, design has the capacity to touch everybody’s life with at least a small slice of utopia.” Unlike other modernist ideals, however, Forakis believes that the concept of progress is no longer relevant to design. “Progress has allowed us to achieve so much as a society, but it now poses an existential threat, and evolution is our only future,” he adds. “Designers must help create new sustainable eco-systems that produce our objects as by-products, as in nature, rather than beginning with what industrial logic hands us. And as in nature, I envision products as highly evolved organisms, brought about by holistic thought processes and iterative development. While evolution does not have a particular style, it can be expressed, and for me this expression should be essential, integrated, seamless, meaningful and poetic.” Studying Architecture at the Rhode Island School of Design, Forakis discovered Industrial Design and was immediately fascinated by the challenge and possibility of shaping so much in the everyday landscape across so many different areas. And this desire to solve new problems, combined with a curiosity about technology, materials and processes, has resulted in works spanning a diverse range of industries and disciplines. One of Forakis’ earliest successes, the landmark Havana lamp, established Foscarini as a preeminent producer of contemporary lighting and is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. The lamp is a simple and holistic expression of Forakis’ interpretation of evolution: its warming presence was unusual for contemporary lighting at the time and the research into alternative materials beyond Murano glass helped Foscarini grow into a major player in lighting. In 2001, as European Design Director for Motorola, Forakis lead the design team of the V70 phone: the world’s smallest mobile phone upon launch and an early example of his interest in using behavioural design to guide form. The closed-loop legs of the Spectre lounge chair, designed for Dune in 2010, reflect integration, continuity, and seamlessness – a recurring theme in Forakis’ work. His innovative product design also caught the attention of a key player in the yachting industry when Martin Lo, director of shipyard CL Yachts, saw Forakis’

various spaces, adapting to the shifting habitational settings. “Our sofas are so successful because their chameleon-like nature makes them ideal for a wide range of purposes”, says company president Fabrizio Cameli. “We make tables of all sizes, using every type of material and introducing new ones, always ensuring that the client/designer sees everything as entirely natural”. Current trends in materials and finishes are being shaped by the supply chain crisis, which has forced companies and consumers to widen their horizons. “Wood and aluminium have become hard to source, so we’ve researched different compositions. The 2022 catalogue introduces tables and coffee tables with lava stone tops and two new collections, Malè and Reef feature surfaces in polypropylene, a very modern, easy-to-maintain material. As environmental awareness is now a vital part of corporate philosophy across the board we’ve introduced accessories in eco-resin and eco-cement. These ductile materials make it possible to create mixes and colours with a strong visual impact”. The brand is increasingly involved in the yachtbuilding sector and it can be said that this area is now a priority for Talenti. “The nautical world has overturned the fossilised standards of artisanal customisation and is introducing more “domestic” furnishings with a more

residential feel, even though they’re made using highperformance materials that enable them to adapt to the marine environment. The current trend is to develop a continuity between the residential and yachting worlds, creating craft where the domestic lifestyle is reproduced in a maritime environment”. The company is seeing this side of its activities increase in importance. It started with large vessels but is enjoying increasing success in the yacht and megayacht industry, too, with many furnishing projects on the books for next year, expressing the outdoor dimension of luxury furniture. “Furniture on a yacht should be elegant and beautiful but also long-lasting and practical. Take, for example, the Riviera collection designed by Jean Philippe Nuel, created specifically for the yacht-building industry. It complies with the IMO standards required in this sector but also fits in perfectly with residential and contract projects”. Clean lines, lots of light, contemporary colours, warm, generous spaces designed for total relaxation. 121
esign, environmental awareness and a circular economy are interweaving themes on board the Amer 120 Neva, a refined superyacht with technological and engineering solutions based on the research and innovation that the yard has been engaged in for many years, with the aim of making its yachts more environmentally respectful. Made by the Permare yard with interiors by Stefano Tini, exteriors by Andrea Ramasco and naval architecture by Massimo Verme, this yacht has an unusual history – the owner ordered it on the day his Amer 100 was launched, so the yard has made two boats in sequence for the same owner. The heart of the design is the huge structural metal and glass cage on the main deck supporting the fly bridge, replacing the classic fibreglass superstructure in order to limit the use of this material as recycling it at end of life is a complicated process. This framework, which becomes an architectural element that emphasises the materials choice, hosts a 60-square-metre full beam saloon with dining and conversation areas. The white furniture and ceilings render the space bright and fresh, while mirrored surfaces multiply the reflections from the sea entering through the huge, 97-square-metre expanse of glass. One example of the circular economy and evidence of respect towards a prized wood under threat of disappearance is the flooring of vintage teak recovered from farmhouses and cut into strips. Beside the dining area are two recessed terraces, two delightful, sheltered open-air niches. The saloon is closed by a partition with a wine cabinet that becomes a furnishing element. The owner’s suite located forward reflects the style and materials of the saloon – here, as throughout the yacht, rounded corners, steel inserts and an interplay of shiny and matt finishes generate movement, as does the special bed head in varnished cellulose, an example of the type of solution obtained by using a simple, natural material. Four guest cabins are located on the lower deck, all identical as the yacht is intended for the charter market. An extreme symmetry dominates here, softened by dancing reflections. The colours are neutral and the style is sober but not minimal. On-board flows are managed by the interior staircase connecting the three decks – a disguised door on an intermediate level between lower and main deck provides access to the crew area – and two symmetrical staircases leading from the cockpit to the flybridge and bows. These stairs make a distinctive addition to the yacht’s architectural elements. As in the interiors, the furniture and upholstery are in bright white, and the two open-air teak and resin tables are made by an artisanal workshop. There are two lounges on the flybridge, both with hydromassage pool. The evocative infinity pool forward merges seamlessly into the sea beyond. The metal structure and its huge glazed surfaces also shape the exterior design. The yacht retains the sporty character of Amer builds, resembling a wedge launched across the surface of the sea, an effect generated by the main deck window strip running from bow to stern and a superstructure suspended over the hull at the bows. These two elements create a single yet twofold volume, with the flybridge seeming to float above the hull. Neva holds the record for the largest yacht powered by four 1000hp Volvo IPS engines, providing outstanding performance with a top speed of 28 knots and reduced consumption. This propulsion choice is a quiet solution with minimal vibration and the compact design of the Volvo IPS has made it possible to create a smaller engine room, an additional crew cabin and extra space for on-board toys. https://ameryachts.it

orking with Permare and the Amerio family means collaborating with sea-lovers who always present new challenges and stimulating input. The concept behind the Amer 120 Neva hinges on large volumes and above all on the wide-body main deck solution, unprecedented on a fast yacht of this type. In all my designs I trace as few lines as possible from bow to stern, I seek out an extreme simplicity of form. In my opinion, when there are 3-4 lines on a bulwark then it’s too many. Clean lines may exert a less immediate impact but they are timeless and never become boring.
126
For the Amer 120 I’ve tried to create a harmonious shape to cover these enormous volumes, retaining the brand’s trademark sporty lines. The main deck terraces helped me a great deal in giving movement to the side of the yacht. Another key factor in the project is the steel and cage-like structure that technologically-speaking enabled me to create a superstructure that seen from the outside seems to float above the hull. It’s very similar to an aircraft fuselage with very sleek lines. The flybridge is immense, and to protect it from the wind and for greater privacy we’ve inserted those “side eyes”, a double curve whose function is both aesthetic and practical.
As well as the floor-to-ceiling glazed bulwarks, the solution adopted in the bows, where the superstructure does not rest directly on the hull, reinforces the impression of lightness and movement that Neva communicates under way and at mooring
One of my favourite areas on board is the unusual saloon, inspired by sail yacht interiors, in the cockpit behind the glass door. It’s a sheltered, intimate spot where it’s possible to enjoy the sailing experience. Our original intention was to open out the cockpit to the stern, but the owner wanted a large sunpad behind the sofas. There’s still plenty of contact with the sea, though – the beach club created by opening the garage door is a very functional, comfortable space and the lounge with infinity pool forward is another lovely area – not only is the forward wall made of glass but absence of visual barriers to the front makes it even more scenic and connected to the water.

he owners of the Amer 120 Neva handed me a rather generalised brief. They wanted a light, bright, convivial vessel that provided a trouble-free on-board experience. Almost a free hand, in fact! Covid restrictions meant we weren’t able to meet very often, but we were often in touch to exchange renderings, images and so on. I also worked on the owners’ previous yacht, the Amer F100. Two very different projects. Not only is Neva wider, longer and brighter but I also took literally their request for light spaces, very different from the décor on the previous yacht with medium dark shades and generous use of walnut. The Amer 120’s engineering design, size and emphasis on natural light made my job relatively easy – I complied with the specifications, creating spaces that would encourage relaxation. I didn’t want to include showy elements that could distract attention, preferring a decor that’s easy to comprehend, with light colours, windows and mirrors that reflect and multiply the images. As is my usual practice, I also went for an enduring style – the owner should feel at home on the yacht now and in the future. As for on-board materials, there are many solutions inspired by nature - the recovered teak used for the saloon flooring gives off that distinctive old wood aroma, and walking on it is like strolling along on a beach. This also resulted in the choice of combining mink-coloured and white oak and turquoise details, which reflect the marine environment that the large windows bring into the interiors. The extensive glazed areas simplify our work as architects, as does the choice of full-beam interiors. It’s on a much larger scale than on similar yachts and with all the side windows it generates that incredible feeling of living sheer above the sea.

“D
eglassing” is a word we at Permare coined to describe the work we’ve been doing for many years now to reduce the amount of fibreglass on board. The Amer 120 is evidence of this. The metal and steel box on the main deck embodies an innovative construction method that has enabled us to save four tonnes of fibreglass, showing that by replacing composite with recyclable materials we can make vessels with a smaller environmental impact. We work closely with our owners to encourage them to select materials with knowledge and awareness. On Neva, for example, we’ve emphasised natural, simple yet green finishes – recovered teak, ecoleather instead of leather, materials derived from the waste products of corn processing, and the owners’ bed is in cellulose. The yacht is an accurate representation of our mood, with sporty lines, extremely high quality, refined but not exaggerated design and very liveable spaces, like the seamless flow created by the cockpit and saloon, a huge space developing on a single level. With the Amer 120 we wanted, in the words of our supplier-poet Paolo Giuli, “To write a new demarcation between the sea and the yacht’s spaces, the largest possible and pursuing the invisible…a play of light and interiors, brighter than we could have hoped. Our work, though, deliberately went no further than the outlines, allowing all our clients to write on the sea the most beautiful novel they have ever read - their own life!” We’ve also paid great attention to details and choices that highlight Italian artisanal skills. For example, we commissioned Italian artisans to work the recovered teak and make the teak and resin tables for the exteriors and the wine cellar in the saloon, all of which help generate a pleasant conviviality. From a technical point of view we’ve been very careful about the amount and distribution of weight. Although the cage is heavier than the alternative in composite we managed to reduce the overall weight – 120 tonnes isn’t a lot for this kind of yacht and this is reflected by the remarkably low consumption figures, also made possible by the efficient Volvo Penta IPS propulsion system.

There may be many more of them than you imagined women in yacht design who help make owners’ dreams even more beautiful and stylish. Now, though, their creativity, sensitivity, precision and determination are helping them attract
a great deal of attention. Wonderfully capable, they interpret owners’ dream, imbuing their yachts with personality and style. The ONE Yacht and Design has gone in search of these female trailblazers, and has found them in many famous design studios and yacht-building yards. Some have taken the plunge, opening their own studio and making a name for themselves on the international scene. This means that things are changing in the professional development sector, too. “We’ve been offering a Masters in Yacht Design at the Politecnico di Milano for twenty years now. During this time we’ve seen many changes”, says Silvia Piardi, Honorary Professor at Politecnico di Milano and former Director of the Design Department. It used to be that out of twenty-five students enrolling on the course only four or five would be women, now they make up a third of the total. However, the sector is still male-dominated, but this reflects the situation in the wider design sector. For many years the PoliMi has promoted initiatives to increase the number of women choosing to enter engineering. While the students in

product design courses are mainly male, interior design is dominated by female students. Why is it that women create only yacht interiors and not exterior lines? “This is also the case in terrestrial architecture”, says Patricia Viels. With the international Citterio Viels studio she designs all aspects of the yachts, and together they handled the interiors of the Custom Line Navetta 30 and some previous Sanlorenzo models. “It’s true, there are many female interior designers but not many architects in the sector I come from. We’d like to increase our presence there”. There’s never been a yacht entirely created by a woman.

Years ago tried star architect Zaha Hadid with the design of Jazz, a 90-metre for Blohm+Voss that looked like an exoskeleton. It was too early, the time wasn’t right for that vision. But Francesca Orio would readily take up the challenge. For ten years she has been part of the team formed around Mauro Micheli and Sergio Beretta in Officina Italiana Design, developing interiors for Riva. “I follow all the stages of the concept up to launch, from the initial volumetric studies to details of style, selecting materials, but I’d love to try the exteriors of a yacht”. Michela Reverberi, an architect who has worked in yacht design since the 1990s, is already on the case . “I’ve been working on a new concept that I hope will soon be built. Yacht design is a field where men are in the majority, but women are asserting themselves”. Among these was Maela Lenci, who led the company. “Lenci Marine was founded in 1989, and in the 1990s we designed pleasure craft and in 2003 I took the reins. My father, an industrial designer, worked on the superstructure. I spent a lot of time in the yard: it was my school”. Her passion and work are rooted in her childhood. “The sea and design have been part of life since I was little”, says Laura Avogadri, who has worked for some time in Officina Italiana Design, “During holiday time

I follow the design of the volumes and offer solutions that suit the client’s style for interiors and exteriors”. But some see the boat from the inside then look at it again from the balanced, aligned exterior. “In yacht building I interact with my colleagues, in this case all men, who design wonderful exteriors. I can only think of how to contribute to their work and seek an equilibrium between exterior and interior, often suggesting changes”, says Marjiana Radovic, co-founder with her partner Marco Bonelli of m2atelier studio, which occupies the sweet spot between residential, product design and LÜRSSEN - MADSUMMER

In all this, women bring a more all-round vision to the design work”. These views bring a breath of fresh air to a traditionally rather stuffy nautical industry. from design and architecture, “Now this type of cross-fertilisation has become such a universal phenomenon that I think we should go back and take another look at nautical tradition. It has only temporarily been set aside, and should always remain as a vital point of reference”. Like her, many other daring designers have made the great leap by opening studios whose approach covers a number of sectors. Francesca Muzio was Creative Director of the Interior Design Department di CRN until 2009, but then decided to take advantage of her feminine touch. Now her FM Architettura studio works on yacht, hotel and residential interiors. “Feminine design is about balance and harmony, about beauty and gracefulness and it can help combine design and functionality, without having one pushing the other into the background”, she says. “These crazy times have brought awareness about the importance of domestic comfort and we’ve realized that people are looking for ways to deal with the lack of human touch”. This approach demands skill, but also means accepting some daunting challenges. Like those taken on by Laura Pomponi, who after a long stint in shipyards has opened her Luxury Project studio: “What I actually like about building a yacht is the intricacy of the process. It’s like a DNA helix, and I love solving these complex issues. For sure my technical background (a degree in technical engineering and a PhD in engineering - ed) has helped me a lot, even if in yachting it seems that being female means you need to try harder and be agreeable at all times. They say that curiosity is female, and it’s certainly true that Carlotta Malatesta uses hers to help express her versatility at the Luca Dini Design &Architecture studio. “Unbridled curiosity and influences from design, architecture, fashion and decoration in general are my constant sources of inspiration”. What this means is that when managing an interior design women have an exceptional talent for interpreting clients’ desires. Francesca Attuoni, Interior Designer Manager at Baglietto, believes firmly in the truth of this. “I hope that meritocracy and professionalism can find a role in a workplace like the nautical sector, which

There’s no shortage of recognition for Patricia Urquiola, a well-known architect in the residential and product design sectors. She recently designed the interiors of the Sanlorenzo SD96, taking a measured approach to her work, giving her stylistic hallmarks a nautical interpretation. Massimo Perotti chose her because he wanted to bring a more feminine approach to the yard’s work. “Patricia has the ability to blend beauty and comfort, always with a touch of irony and awareness”, said the Executive Chairman of Sanlorenzo. A lovely compliment that bodes well for the future of women in the entire sector.

Inspired by sportscar design, exterior designer Alberto Mancini has used a modern language to guide the evolution of the Flybridge collection and highlight the distinctive features of Azimut Yachts with an ever-sharper cleanness of line. “The yacht had to carry on the evolution of the Flybridge collection in continuity with the previous models, bringing out the typical styles of Azimut Yachts and, at the same time, modelling a sleek and streamlined yacht with ever-cleaner lines,” he explains. “In addition, I used a stylistic language that transforms some functional elements into design details.” The exteriors enclose Azimut Yachts’ stylistic features, reinforcing Mancini’s pursuit for sportiness together with a cleanliness of lines. “The side glazed surface in the saloon is never interrupted and emphasises a minimalism created thanks to the automotive approach to the project, also seen in the hull lines in the bow,” Mancini adds. “In addition, decisive and horizontal marks express strength and stability, contributing to perfect harmony and proportion between the hull, deck and the superstructure, in line with the stylistic path started five years ago.” The external areas are characterised by transformability and multifunctionality. as if they were in an office, sitting at a fully-equipped desk and with a constant Internet connection whatever country they are in or borders they cross. It can be based on any vehicle – in this case it’s a Mercedes Sprinter van with every detail of the interiors chosen by the owner, from the leathers and fabrics to the drawer handles. The climatisation follows the rules in force on aircraft, with cool air drawn in from the ceiling and warm air from the floor, as comfort dictates that the feet must maintain a temperature 1.5° C above that of the head. Lighting is controlled from a tablet operating smart glass windows that darken on command, although it’s also possible simply to close the classic curtains. Energy is supplied by 110-volt, 220-volt or USB sockets with an inverter providing AC and a distribution unit with the same protection found on board aircraft. Passengers can move around upright with ease to shift from the workstation the relaxation area. A galley is available on request to enable high-end catering to be provided. The driving position is independent, and an interphone allows passengers to communicate with the driver. “A vehicle like this is a resource and a calling card”, says engineer Matteo Bulletti, the head of the company. “It’s impossible to give a quote off the top of your head, it depends on what the client wants. Apart from safety considerations there are no limits”. From the point of view of performance and handling, taking weight limitations into account is normal practice for a company involved in aircraft design and construction – as a result light weight is a crucial element if the van’s performance and safety in terms of acceleration, road-holding, range and braking are not to be compromised. Aeronautical materials and components are used throughout, as they are light, tough and provide sound insulation – although in this case there is no jet engine thundering away outside the window! They also have flame-retardant properties and can easily be replaced. www.deltautomotive.com

I
n horology the idea of “his & hers” has always been associated with watches designed to complement life in a relationship, to be worn by a couple who live in such perfect harmony they feel the need to wear
identical accessories. The presence of a third party, of course, would be tactfully ignored, at least until Bovet 1822 received a rather singular request – to make two unique timepieces that could respond to the aesthetic requirements of two wealthy clients of the Rolls Royce company while fulfilling the technical specifications of the brand’s new Boat Tail (see our feature on page 60), a one-off vehicle commissioned from the Goodwoodbased manufacturers by the well-heeled clients mentioned above. Right from the start the car was designed to host not just the obligatory clock in the centre of the dashboard, but specially-designed pieces by Bovet. The Swiss masters based the design on the Amadeo, whose versatile character has led it to become an icon of the brand’s watchmaking expertise. The result is two interpretations featuring a unique 44 mm white case with dials front and back, intended to function as wristwatch, pocket watch, desk clock, pendant and, of course, part of the Boat Tail instrumentation, neatly housed in an aluminium and titanium support designed to dampen the vibration caused by the car – although as it’s a Rolls Royce, this is, of course, minimal! The two models have different cases – the men’s watch is smooth and unadorned, the women’s version is ornate – and different supplementary dials. On the men’s watch it is in aventurine with a star system motif, while on the women’s watch it is in mother-of-pearl with floral pattern. Two micro-mechanical interpretations powered by a manual movement with tourbillon. Completion of these horological wonders took the brand’s master artisans over 3,000 hours. www.bovet.com
Above, the back of the men’s model reveals a 60-second tourbillon regulating the manually wound movement within, an aventurine dial with constellations and a lacquered reproduction of the car. To side, the watch becomes a perfect on-board instrument
