he yacht-building market is experiencing an unprecedented boom. The pandemic and subsequent lockdown have generated a pent-up desire to return to normality and enjoy life’s pleasures once again. Now people want to be outside in the open air, in contact with nature. And most of all, to travel. In practice, the lockdown has reawakened a longing for the kind of freedom that only a boat can provide, and many have realised that a yacht is the ideal place to spend time in safe surroundings with family and friends. The yacht-building yards’ order books are packed full until 2024/25, and Italy has once again staked its claim as international market leader, especially in the superyacht sector.

Design has played a fundamental role in all this – responding to today’s demands, yacht designers and yards have developed incredible solutions that place people at the heart of the project, offering the comfort and privacy more usually associated with a residence. The individual and contact with the sea form the focal point. Versatile spaces are a priority.

As a result, yachts have been transformed into floating villas whose large windows and discreet structural elements create a constant visual contact with the surrounding nature. On-board furnishings are often sourced from illustrious Italian brands, with pieces designed by the most well-loved names so that those on board the yacht experience the kind of atmosphere and intimacy that only a true home can offer. And finally, there are almost endless opportunities for personalisation of surfaces and even on-board instrumentation, for safe, relaxed sailing with all controls within easy reach.

questions to Federica Cantori Head of Marketing for the Cantori Company How has the Cantori style developed over time, and what are its most popular products? Cantori was founded over forty years ago, and it’s inevitable that stylistic evolution, materials research and aesthetic experimentation have all played a role in our development – the market sets us new challenges every day. When they’re overcome, they yield wonderful results. The most popular and always personalisable products, in the yacht building industry, too, are the Twist chair, the Voyage table, the Portofino and Montecarlo sofa and the daytime furnishing line from the Shanghai collection. We started from brass beds and have gone on to create a unique style for every interior.

Wrought iron and more besides – let’s talk a little about materials, artisanality and sustainability. Metal working is our history. Every product offered is a jewel assembled with the expertise of cabinet makers, upholsterers, decorators and fitters. Artisanality is our hallmark. Our designers always start from a detail in metal and build the unit, the table, the bed and every individual complement around it. The collaboration with home decorators and interior designers and the entirely in-house manufacture enables our products to be personalised, so we make furnishings that reflect our clients’ desires. In recent years we’ve invested increasingly in sourcing raw materials from local suppliers, Italian or at most European, who respect all the standards, recovering and re-using materials whenever this possible. For us, sustainability also means creating long-lasting products. We have clients who own pieces they bought from us over forty years ago.

What designers are working with you at the moment? In recent years we’ve developed a wonderful collaboration with Maurizio Manzoni, who designed the entire 2019 collection and much of the 2020 and 2021 collection. He’s an exceptional talent and knew how to take advantage of Cantori’s strong points, designing products that have strengthened the company’s international drive. We’re also collaborating with Luca Roccadadria and Davide Montanaro, two young designers with fantastic personalities.

How important is product customisation? At the moment it’s really important. We’re working with finishes supplied by our clients or requested by external textile companies. Personalised colours and sometimes even personalisation of the piece of furniture itself. We have a range of bed sizes. The fact that we use entirely artisanal methods in our production and make everything in-house helps achieve this.

What projects do have in the pipeline? We’re widening distribution in the USA and China and we’re increasingly trying to emphasise a style that embodies the Italian ideals of good taste and respect for the object. We want to distance ourselves even further from the “use and throw away” culture people have unfortunately become used to. We want to produce quality products that last.

What’s your approach to the issue of sustainability?

In the world of upholstered furniture, our main area of operation, sustainability is mainly linked to the lifespan of our products – timeless objects and high-quality raw materials and production processes. In the context of coverings we already offer low environmental impact leather and fabrics made from regenerated yarn, especially cotton.

Does Living Divani have any projects with the yacht-building world?

We’ve completed many projects in collaboration with architects to develop customised products reflecting the demands of individual owners and sector requirements. Our upholstered products can easily be produced in a large number of versions, fulfilling an extensive range of techniques and aesthetic objectives. One example is our Kasbah sofa – the cushions can be rotated to modify the configuration, transforming it, for example, from corner sofa to daybed.

The Living Divani Gallery in Milan combines art and design. What elements of art have you introduced into your collections? All Living Divani products share an artistic imprint. Their purified aesthetic often means they seem to be sculptures in space. Some creations, though, are more closely related to art, like Lemni, our new chair by the architect Marco Lavit, who works in the field of collectible objects.

Art Design in your collections?

Our company focusses on series production, but we give our creativity free rein with one-off projects that straddle the line between art and design. One example is The Uncollected Collection by Piero Lissoni, celebrating the brand’s 50th anniversary and its thirty years of art direction, which goes beyond the classic form-function concept to express the

Our vetrite has been certified as resistant to temperature, humidity, UV rays, stains and abrasions. It has also been certified as non-slip and photocatalytic. Acoustic certification is the next step.

What technical developments are you working on and what sectors do you plan on expanding into?

As well as new cladding materials we’re developing new uses and innovations for our Vetrite and mosaics. Speaking of Vetrite, our research and development department is currently working on protypes of the first photovoltaic Vetrite models, providing a clean energy source. We’re also looking at new uses for walls in Vetrite or mosaics in the general context of domotics.

What are the next developments from Sicis for the nautical industry?

The yacht-building sector’s demand for high technical content and exclusivity has encouraged us to integrate technology into our covering materials. For the first time it’s possible to integrate touch switches behind a cladding, with no visible elements to interrupt the aesthetic effect desired by the client and architects. In this way we also protect the technology underneath the surface, preserving it from wear. Alongside our partners we seek to make Vetrite compatible with the highest possible number of technological devices and systems currently on the market. In the medium term we can directly develop technologies linked to all the product lines. Sicis products will be increasingly integrated with their host environment.

In which countries do you plan to open new showrooms?

We’re shortly going to open a new “Casa Sicis” in Dubai. We’re expanding our presence in China and at the same time we’re keeping a close eye on India, where we’ve just opened a new showroom in New Delhi. It’s the same for Kuala Lumpur and other strategically important cities in malaysia and Indonesia. We’re opening our first Vetrite Art Gallery in New York on January 2nd.

What are the most popular patterns?

There’s significant worldwide demand for precious art mosaics. Demand for the simple mosaic tiles vary greatly from country to country. In the context of Vetrite the GemGlass collection has proved to be very popular.

In recent years the yacht-building market has experienced positive trends across the industry, with significant growth figures. It’s been a record year for us – we’ve handed over three full-custom yachts and sold six since August 2021. The unusual period we’re living through has certainly encouraged people to see yachts as privileged locations where they can isolate themselves in safety.

What are the current trends? What do new Baglietto owners demand from their yachts? The main requirement today is a closer relationship with the sea. As a result the emphasis is now on the aft spaces, redesigned to ensure they can be used to the full. The uninterrupted full-height windows provide greater visibility and more natural light, and the side terraces enable guests to enjoy fantastic views. Not to mention the beach clubs: the three-level beach club has become our signature feature.

Is there a more heightened awareness of the issues surrounding environmental protection? Owners are showing greater environmental awareness, and this is being translated into vessels with hybrid motorisation. We offer this in all standard versions of our products. The yard is deeply involved in this subject and is carrying out important researches. In Monaco we presented the B-Zero project, a green project in the field of alternative energy sources, an expression of Baglietto’s vision and tangible commitment to sustainable yachting. The project, whose primary objective is to increase the electric cruising range of vessels in zero-emission mode, involves integrating hydrogen fuel cell technology on a hybrid or diesel-electric platform.

To what extent does design contribute to a project’s appeal? Design plays a highly significant role in both the exteriors and interiors. For our pre-designed lines our stylistic choice fell on Francesco Paszkowski Design, which has been interpreting the Baglietto philosophy for over 20 years. We asked him to redesign the traditional line, with the T52, and the fast lines that are part of the Baglietto DNA. Then there’s the DOM133 line designed by Stefano Vafiadis, a family of 40-metre aluminium cruisers that reflect the “atelier” production philosophy we are well-known for. Not forgetting the full-custom models that show the yard’s amazing flexibility – they are unique craft with a specially-developed naval platform.

What projects and commissions are you currently involved in? The yard has thirteen new yachts between 38 and 52 metres in length in different stages of construction for delivery up to 2024.

What is your favourite design feature?

We are proud to have designed such a complete yacht below 300gt, working closely with Azimut to accomplish this feat. The extensive use of carbon fibre in the superstructure was key to expanding internal volumes and minimising wasted space without compromising seakeeping. P.L.A.N.A. Design’s naval architecture delivers unmatched efficiency and a smooth ride like one would typically expect from a larger vessel.

What has been the market’s reaction to the unconventional design?

The sales numbers speak for themselves. The Trideck has captured the attention of a wide range of owners fascinated by the revolutionary layout. When you break rules that have been respected by a whole industry for decades, the product can be polarising. With the Trideck, we have a beautiful yacht that pushes boundaries yet maintains wide appeal thanks to the customisable layout configurations.

As Azimut’s largest project, what does this milestone represent for the market?

Many people have been waiting for Azimut to extend its range with a new flagship. And through the execution of the project, I have seen excellent feedback encouraging the brand to continue to innovate. With the first unit already delivered and deeply appreciated, the team is only emboldened.

Nautical interior design has been increasingly influenced by the style of contemporary buildings. For this project, we wanted to celebrate being on the sea and return buyers to a sense of nautical wellbeing that is increasingly rare within modern yacht design. The idea was to create a boat, not a house.

What are the key traditional interior design features that have been re-interpreted?

Large panes of glass have been used in place of traditional wooden walls to amplify the sense of space. We worked on the furniture to recreate and re-interpret the sixties’ motopanfilo feeling; we are particularly proud of the redesign of the sofa in the main deck cockpit, which fosters a gentle fluidity in continuity with the salon interior.

How does the interior ribcage concept impact the feel of the interior?

The ribs give rhythm and manage the spaces but, at the same time, have been designed to incorporate ‘purposeful function’, concealing the air conditioning vents and part of the boat’s lighting system. They also cleverly accommodate mirrors that give the interior a greater sense of space.

Why did you create a design inspired by the 1960s, rather than a retro-chic design based on nostalgia?

It is now a given that yacht interiors should be bathed in natural light, which eliminates the possibility of reviving the designs of the 1960s. Equally, the need to have direct access to the sea via a beach club or swim platform puts an end to the curved sterns of classic yachts, romantic as they may be.

We were determined to explore all the best elements of a special era without compromising on a single expectation of modern owners.

How will the new Motopanfilo impact the market’s approach to superyacht design?

Contemporary superyachts have arguably moved too far away from their nautical roots and the ocean itself. By borrowing design notes from the 1960s, as well as looking to nautical history and elements of marine life, the Motopanfilo returns clients to a sense of nautical ease that has been overlooked in recent years, and that is a growing trend.

Further specifications included a walk-in wardrobe and vanity corner with a Living Divani leather and aluminium chair as well as a series of freestanding furniture pieces chosen by the owner, like the brown leather Poliform chair, black-coated stainless steel Frank coffee table by B&B Italia and silver armchair by Minotti.

What type of owner will a sport-fly like Folgore appeal to? Another source of pride is the company’s work in progress on the yacht Ice, a 75-metre craft by Lurssen built in 2005 without a lift.

At the heart of the system lie the joysticks controlling the craft’s movements and the antenna for the Dynamic Positioning System – based on GPS technology – essential for identifying the yacht’s exact location in real time. The skipper at the wheel will ask the

The EVC system will then take account of any external forces like wind and current and calculate steering angles and transmission thrust.

In this way Volvo Penta Assisted Docking provides the skipper with a safer, simpler and more precise mooring experience.

At the moment this technology is available for vessels powered by new-generation Volvo Penta IPS 10 systems. Retrofitting and installation on larger propulsion units will be available in the near future.
