VALEDICTORIAN: MAKAIRA FISK Where are you going to college and what are you majoring in?

Florida State University, and I’m majoring in behavioral neuroscience.

What are you most excited for about going to college?

I’m rooming with my best friend and also trying to rush.

When you realized you’d be top two in your class, how did you react?

I was kind of shocked. To be honest, I didn’t really want it at first. I was like ‘Oh cool, that would be great.’ But when I found out, I was determined to keep my spot.

How did you manage your time to balance all your work and succeed like you did?

I’m a list and calendar person.

I’m going to the University of Florida and majoring in psych with special in behavioral cognitive neuroscience, and also going into pre-med.

What are you most excited for about going to college?

I’m excited to build a routine, find myself, get to know who I am outside of school.

When you realized you’d be top two in your class, how did you react?

I was super shocked. I actually ended up crying in the school’s front office because I had no idea that it would happen. I was really grateful and surprised.

How did you manage your time to balance all your work and succeed like you did?

I think the most important thing is, because I had so many responsibilities and tasks to get done, I would tell myself to focus on one thing at a time. If I was at track or cross country practice, I would just be focused on the

training. When I got home, I would just focus on the task I was doing and after I finished, I would be like, ‘OK, now what do I have to do?’ I try not to overwhelm myself by thinking about everything at the same time.

What’s one thing you wish you knew about high school in advance?

I guess it would have to be the teachers, that they don’t have to just be teachers. They can be your friends, too. I always saw them as authority figures.

As soon as I started talking to them, I realized how fun school can be when you do have that relationship.

What was your favorite moment of high school?

My statistics teacher and I pranked the calculus teacher.

We had an AP practice exam on a Saturday and we were playing this prank. We were there at the school, just the teacher and a few other students, no one else was there… we changed the calculus teacher’s entire room and made the stuff on all the desks spell the word ‘stats.’

What are your summer plans?

I’m starting school in July doing summer B, so I only have a month left. I’m really focusing on my last piano performance at the end of June. I’m just getting to see all my friends and having fun hanging out with each other.

We’re making sure we know we’ve got each other’s backs even though we’re going our separate ways.

What’s the best thing you learned from a teacher?

My history teacher told me one thing I didn’t realize I was doing but really helped me. ‘Just get it done. Stop trying to stress yourself out about making something perfect that you don’t even get started on it.’

What do you hope to do in life after college?

I hope to be somebody who others can go to for help. I just hope to be someone who is able to help others. I want to be somebody that makes someone else smile. I hope to be somebody that encourages and uplifts others while staying true to myself.

What’s one thing you wish you knew about high school in advance?

I wish I hadn’t stressed myself out so much and lived in the moment more often instead of worrying about things.

What was your favorite moment of high school?

I had the lead role in the spring musical this year. I hadn’t done theater in a while and decided that since it was my last year, I wanted to be in this show.

What are your summer plans?

Catching up on sleep, for sure.

One of my graduation presents was going to NY to see a Broadway show. I’m seeing Waitress.

And I’m going to hang out with family before I leave.

What’s the best thing you learned from a teacher?

From the drama teacher, that it’s OK to just forget about the world for a minute and have some fun, live in the moment.

What do you hope to do in life after college?

I want to go into psychiatry. I have struggled with mental illness and I want to be the person I didn’t have in those dark times for other teenagers and other people.

VALEDICTORIAN: MASON NESS Where are you going to college and what are you majoring in?

Florida International University.

I’m going to major in international business.

What are you most excited for about going to college?

I’m excited about having my freedom and being able to make my own decisions.

When you realized you’d be top two in your class, how did you react?

I realized at the beginning of 11th grade. I was really surprised because I was not expecting it, but once I found out I started taking more classes to try to keep that status.

SALUTATORIAN: MIGUEL GOMEZ Where are you going to college and what are you majoring in?

University of South Florida. I’m going to major in biomedical engineering.

Also, graduating as salutatorian provides a nice closure to this chapter of family because I am the last one to graduate.

What are you most excited for about going to college?

Taking another step in life. Meeting new people. Also, possibly to be part of the undergraduate research project in neuroengineering and participating in clubs that USF has to offer.

How did you manage your time to balance all your work and succeed like you did?

I tried to keep a stable schedule so I wouldn’t overwhelm myself so much. Never truly losing focus even when I felt overwhelmed by dual enrollment and AP classes. I managed to maintain a good mindset of knowing anything can be achieved through hard work, regardless of who you are or where you come from.

When you realized you’d be top two in your class, how did you react?

Well, I was not actually too focused on being at the top of my class, as I was more focused on receiving my AA from HCC because it was free college. But when I checked my junior year, I was surprised that I was number three and I thought I was going to stay. But I eventually became number two by senior year.

What’s one thing you wish you knew about high school in advance?

You think you know what you’re going into, but you actually don’t. It’s something completely different. High school is no joke, as it can either make you or break you.

What was your favorite moment of high school?

Spending time with my friends and also being the Vice President of Key Club, as it shifted my definition of service into something I previously never thought of.

What are your summer plans?

It’s my first summer without taking classes, so I want to travel and relax.

What’s the best thing you learned from a teacher?

This year I took a class with Mr. Schism and he said to live life in the moment. The phrase was ‘Carpe diem.’ Seize the day.

What do you hope to do in life after college?

I chose (biomedical engineering) primarily because it opens up two options. I can either stay on the research route or I can go, after completing a masters program, to medical school and become a neurologist.

How did you manage your time to balance all your work and succeed like you did?

I took a lot of online classes that I could do in filler time between other things. I took a full load of high school and dual enrollment classes, so it was a lot. I was really busy that whole year.

What’s one thing you wish you knew about high school in advance?

I wish I knew how important the memories I’d make would be, and that I would focus more on being really involved in the school and making more memories at the school.

What was your favorite moment of high school?

I would say just recently, a couple weeks ago, when our school was featured on Good Morning

America. I got to be in that and that was really cool.

What are your summer plans?

I just got a job at Publix and I’m going to be working. At the very beginning of August I’m moving to FIU. What’s the best thing you learned from a teacher?

Mr. Belcher said to always make sure your work is done neatly and perfectly in order. If anything was not perfect, a straight line was not totally straight, he would take points off.

What do you hope to do in life after college?

I don’t really know yet, but I’d like to start my own business or maybe be an accountant.

IB VALEDICTORIAN: SAKETH KATTA STRAWBERRY

CREST didn’t fully expect to be valedictorian. Also, my parents were really hoping I was valedictorian so it is really exciting for them, as well.

Where are you going to college and what are you majoring in?

I’m going to Rice University in Houston, Texas and I’m majoring in bio chemistry.

Probably the research opportunities. I feel like I haven’t really been able to get my hands in with research during high school and I think going to college, especially Rice University, will be a great chance to get involved with research. I’m really interested in

Probably after the first semester of senior year. They told us the top 10 results then. Before then I wasn’t really sure because they don’t exactly give out ranks at my school. I was pretty excited. I kind of expected to be Top 10, but I

How did you manage your time to balance all your work and succeed like you did?

Most of my time management I do through scheduling. I make a schedule every week of what I hope to accomplish during that week. I generally just manage my time slots, everything from when to go to bed, when to wake up, when to do certain things so I can manage my time well. It helped make sure I finished my homework in a timely manner and made sure I could participate in extracurriculars without sacrificing grades or other things like mental health.

What’s one thing you wish you knew about high school in advance?

I think, especially with the IB program, I wish I knew how rigorous it would be. I think when I first entered the IB program I never really had an idea of how rigorous it would be to do all that work and still manage time and try new things in high school.

If I knew how rigorous it would be initially, I may have chosen a

different program, but now after going through the IB program I know I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it.

It’s really made me into a more organized and hard-working person. I think it was a really good experience.

What was your favorite moment of high school?

I think it’s hard to pinpoint a favorite moment, but definitely sitting at the lunch table talking to my friends every day. Various things come up during that time period, just trying to get away from the intense nature of just going to class and doing work, class, exams. Just talking with friends. That’s probably when I spent the most time with my friends was during lunch. We didn’t really have a lot of time to hang out outside of school. Lunch was probably the best part of high school.

What are your summer plans?

Through the summer, family and I are actually going on a trip to Europe. But after that I’m actually going to a special program in Houston working with the community and doing various community service opportunities throughout the city.

What’s the best thing you learned from a teacher?

I think the best advice I’ve learned is to never stop, especially with the IB program, I feel like a lot of people toward the beginning, especially freshman year, were dropping out of the IB program. Constantly our teachers would tell us to stay in, to give it a try even though it may seem hard now, in the future it could benefit us greatly. Listening to that advice, persevering till the end and knowing all the hardship I faced over these past four years was really beneficial in the end.

I’ve learned a lot from the program and I think, even though it was hard, the advice the teachers gave was right.

What do you hope to do in life after college?

I’m not really that sure. Becoming an oncologist was one goal that I had set for myself a long time ago. Honestly, 20 or 30 years from now, I don’t know where I want to be entirely. I know I want to be in the medical field, but there’s just so many things to do in the medical field. Maybe I’ll take advantage of the different opportunities I’ll have in college to really explore what I want to do as a career.

I’m going to USF and majoring in nursing.

What are you most excited for about going to college?

The independence and meeting new people. I chose USF because all of my brothers went there. It’s close to home.

When you realized you’d be top two in your class, how did you react?

I usually went to my guidance counselor after every semester to get advice on classes for the next semester. Recently I had asked where I was ranked and she told me, and I was shocked.

I didn’t really have the goal of being valedictorian. I was shocked because of that. I didn’t

I’m going to UF and majoring in electrical engineering.

I’ve always had an interest in electronics from a young age and wanted to learn more about them.

What are you most excited for about going to college?

I’m looking forward to growing out of my comfort zone and experiencing new things, also learning more about what I’m interested in in my classes.

When you realized you’d be top two in your class, how did you react?

I didn’t really expect it. I just kind of did what I was best at and, lo and behold, I was top two.

How did you manage your time to balance all your work and succeed like you did?

It’s always been about time management. When I was doing my work I did leave some time to have some fun and then later on come back and finish what was left. I made sure I was able to do everything I wanted to and still get all of my work done. I was running on lots of coffee.

What’s one thing you wish you knew about high school in advance?

That’s a tricky one. I wish I had learned to loosen up a little bit.

I feel like I was uptight and took things a bit too seriously.

What was your favorite moment of high school?

My favorite moment was actually hanging out with my friends and getting them to play games after school.

What are your summer plans?

I’ll probably work a summer job so I can pay off housing for UF. What’s the best thing you learned from a teacher?

I learned I don’t always have to be right, not to be so pressured to get things right every time.

What do you hope to do in life after college?

I hope to have enough time for my other interests on top of my career. I think if there’s a balance, I’ll be happy.

We had these lunch parties and we threw a ‘Mamma Mia’ themed end-of-the-year lunch party. There was ABBA music and we brought decorations for our table. We all tried to dress in the 70s theme. It was really fun.

What are your summer plans?

I don’t really have any plans this summer. This sis the first summer I don’t have dual enrollment classes. I’m hoping the free time will leave room for some spontaneous adventures.

What’s the best thing you learned from a teacher?

I guess that it all works out in the end.

What do you hope to do in life after college?

I would like to become a nurse practitioner and maybe practice at a little family care place. I just know I want to experience as much as I can.
