T

he UAE’s two major airports, Al Maktoum International Airport and Dubai International Airport, are connected on land by 49 x MAN TGS 19.400 semitrailer combination trucks, commissioned by Emirates SkyCargo - one of the largest air freight hauliers in the world. • 49 x MAN trucks regularly transport air freight on the 65-kilometre-long route between Dubai’s two airports • To date, they have covered over 19 million kilometres without disruption • More than 375 trips daily At Emirates SkyCargo in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a total of 49 x MAN TGS 19.400 semitrailer tractors are tasked with ensuring that the second-largest air freight haulier in the world keeps to its tight schedules with utmost reliability, and that its customers from all corners of the globe are always content. The Emirates air freight centre is located at Al Maktoum Airport in the UAE, whilst Emirates’ passenger fleet is based at Dubai International Airport - 65 kilometres away. As Emirates also uses its passenger fleet to handle air freight, a large number of goods have to be transported between the two airports by land. For this purpose, Emirates SkyCargo relies on the services of the Allied Transport Company (ATC).

20 PlantAndEquipment.com | October 2019

ATC is one of the leading transport companies, with the largest fleet of trucks on the market in the United Arab Emirates and the surrounding region. 49 x trucks from the ATC fleet are provided to Emirates SkyCargo for exclusive use for their services. This fleet concerns an impeccable selection of MAN vehicles. The 2-axle MAN TGS 19.400 semitrailer tractors, equipped with an LX cab and a volumeoptimised air freight box semitrailer, are on the road day and night between the two major airports - Maktoum International Airport (DWC) and Dubai International Airport (DXB). So far in the four years of collaboration between Emirates SkyCargo, Allied Transport and MAN, the MAN TGS semitrailer combination trucks have covered around 19 million kilometres effortlessly; this equates to 25 x the distance to the moon and back. During this time, the MAN TGS trucks from ATC have hauled well over a million air freight containers from one airport to the other. They make up to 375 journeys a day between the two airports. The MAN TGS trucks have proved to be extremely reliable, and, with their driver assistance systems, very safe. It is not without reason that Emirates SkyCargo is extremely satisfied with ATC and the MAN TGS 19.400 trucks: they have helped the company remain true to its schedule with safety, reliability, and without a single breakdown.

tons and a 2000-ton wash tower. The pipe rack modules were transported from the client’s yard to the site using 56 axle-lines of SPMT. Once on site they were carefully set onto foundations. The 2000-ton wash tower, measuring 101m x 10.8m x 11.4m, was received at the King Fahd Industrial Port and staged at Mammoet’s yard within the port for custom clearance and weighing. It was then safely transported nine kilometers to the project site using 76 axle-lines of SPMT. The transport of the remaining modules and installation activities will continue through to December 2019. Mammoet has been present in Saudi Arabia for over 40 years, with its first project carried out in the 1970s. Since then the branch has handled a wide range of prestigious projects in the Kingdom, providing transport and lifting services for clients in the power, petrochemical, civil and infrastructure sectors.

100,000th New DAF CF and XF Production Milestone Reached in Record Time

D

AF Trucks in Eindhoven has today seen the completion of the 100,000th new generation CF and XF truck to roll-off the production line. Never before in the company’s history has a 100,000 series-run been reached so quickly. The 100,000th vehicle, a DAF XF 450 4x2 FT Super Space Cab, was delivered in celebratory fashion to Groep Gheys in Mol, Belgium. The first vehicles of the current generation CF and XF have been in production since July 2017. Since then, no fewer than 100,000 units have been produced at DAF Trucks in Eindhoven and at Leyland Trucks in Great Britain. “That we have reached this milestone so quickly is a testament to the quality and efficiency of this latest generation of trucks,” said Harry Wolters, DAF Trucks President. “Our customers praise the reliability, the fuel efficiency, the low operating costs and, not to mention, the unsurpassed driver comfort. No wonder DAF is Europe’s number 1 in tractors.”

26 PlantAndEquipment.com | October 2019

The 100,000th truck was delivered to the Belgian Gheys Group, specializing in bulk and container transport. “We have a long history with DAF Trucks,” stated co-owner Luc Gheys, “The first truck my father started using in the mid-sixties was a DAF coach that was converted into a removal truck. Following on from my father, we have included DAF in our fleet since 2015. The experience of both the trucks and the DAF dealer, Lavrijsen, has always been excellent. That’s why we currently have around 80 DAFs in our fleet - and this year we will expand that number further with another 25.”

Going Green: Nearly 200 MAN Lion’s City Buses for Trondheim

A

s of late, 189 MAN Lion’s City buses have been ensuring that residents and tourists of Trondheim, Norway arrive at their destinations safely, comfortably and, above all, in an environmentally friendly manner. The vehicles are powered with biogas or biodiesel, allowing the Norwegian city to rely on efficient and clean solutions for inner-city traffic. • Order includes gas buses and city buses powered with biodiesel fuel

• Between 31 and 50 seating places and 50 and 92 standing places are available for passengers of the solo and articulated buses • 105 city buses went to the transport company Vy Buss AS and another 84 vehicles went to the transport company Tide Buss AS With over 190,000 residents, Trondheim is Norway’s third-largest city. The cityscape is characterised by colourful warehouses as well as the new olive green MAN buses, which have been in operation since the beginning of August. MAN Truck & Bus delivered 105 city buses to Vy Buss AS and another 84 vehicles to Tide Buss AS. “We’re delighted that the two 30 PlantAndEquipment.com | October 2019

largest transport companies in Norway put their trust in us,” said Rudi Kuchta, Head of Product & Sales Bus and Speaker Business Area Bus at MAN Truck & Bus. He added: “The buses are powered with biogas or biodiesel, which means they fit in wonderfully with the quiet and natural environment in Trondheim – you just want to take in a deep breath of air!” The modern alternative drive forms perfectly complement the image of a green, smog-free city, and are also exceptionally economical. Numerous Scandinavian metropolises and cities are already switching to new types of drive solutions, with the objective to significantly reduce the carbon footprint when it comes to public transport. MAN Lion’s City (A21) vehicles have now been in operation in the Norwegian city for a few weeks. The solobuses are 12 metres long and feature an E2876 LUH Euro 6 gas engine. In terms of fuel, drivers can use both natural gas as well as biogas. The order also included the delivery of two variants of the 18-metre-long MAN Lion’s City G (A23) articulated bus: one with a D2066 LUH diesel engine in a special biodiesel version, and one with an E2876 LUH gas engine. Both variants fulfil the Euro 6 emission standard.

latest NEWS // MAN The transport companies also ordered MAN Lion’s City L LE (A44) city buses. These 15-metre-long low-floor vehicles feature the D2066 LUH diesel engine and are likewise powered with biodiesel. Comfort and safety are ensured respectively by a powerful airconditioning system and an innovative camera monitoring system in the passenger and driver area. The vehicles are not the first buses that the two Norwegian transport companies have ordered from MAN Truck & Bus. Back in 2011 MAN delivered 13 natural gas buses to Vy Buss AS; today the number stands at 260 city buses and coaches. The collaboration between Tide Buss AS and MAN began in 2003 with the delivery of 6 trolley buses. A total of 240 vehicles for city and tourist travel have now been supplied to the company. The latest order also includes training for drivers as well as a service and maintenance contract. The deciding factor in awarding it to MAN Truck & Bus was, among other things, its many years of expertise in the gas-fuelled

drive sector. “We have been driven by and focused on this subject for over 75 years - we aren’t the European market and technological leader in the gas-fuelled city bus sector for nothing,” said Jan Aichinger, Head of Product Marketing Bus. “By operating biogas vehicles, Vy Buss AS and Tide Buss AS are sending a clear message in regards to environmental protection. After all, a gas bus running on biogas currently represents the most economical and environmentally sound solution for a virtually CO2-neutral form of public transport.”

VOLVO CE

Opens Certified Used Center at Hoffman Equipment

V

olvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) continues to take the guesswork out of buying used machines with the opening of a new Volvo Certified Used Center in New Jersey. The company has partnered with Hoffman Equipment to establish a Volvo Certified Used Center in Deptford, New Jersey that will serve the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions. It’s Volvo CE’s third Certified Used Center, and it follows the opening of centers in Nevada and Michigan over the course of the last 16 months. Volvo CE and its dealer network intend to provide customers with the best equipment lifecycle values in the construction industry. The Certified Used Centers enable Volvo CE to raise the value of machines into their second lives, when they enter the used market, by working with dealers to provide equipment to customers that has been thoroughly inspected and certified, offering an alternative to the auction market. All of the machines sold at the Used Centers are Volvo-owned machines that were previously under lease. “With the addition of Hoffman Equipment, we’re able to expand the Volvo Used Center network to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic so that customers in these regions have easy access to our used inventory, and have assurance that the equipment they are purchasing from Volvo is at a price that reflects its true condition,” said Ryan Sherwood, vice president, retail development at Volvo CE. “Hoffman Equipment is a relatively new Volvo dealer, but the company has a long and proven record of technical service capabilities that makes it an ideal match for this program.” 32 PlantAndEquipment.com | October 2019

At these centers, off-lease Volvo equipment undergoes a rigorous 140-plus point inspection from certified dealer technicians and is refurbished to OEM standards using genuine parts. All factory updates are completed, and the machines are packaged with a 6 month/1200 hour Powertrain warranty to become Volvo Certified Used. The certified machines also come with a free one-year subscription to the ActiveCare Direct telematics service and they also qualify for Volvo’s lifetime frame warranty. Certified Used machines are eligible for financing through Volvo Financial Services. “Our customers can be 100% certain that the final product coming out of our shop will be exactly as promised in the inspection report. The machines will have been tested, with software updates completed and components reconditioned using genuine OEM-approved,” said Tim Watters, president of Hoffman Equipment. “We have dedicated a tremendous amount of resources, including a supertalented team of technicians, to ensure that this equipment is delivered to the marketplace ready to work hard and reliably into a long and productive ‘second life.’” The range of used equipment includes Volvo articulated haulers, excavators and wheel loaders. All Volvo Certified Used equipment can be viewed online, including the complete 140-plus point inspection reports, at volvousedce.com. Volvo plans to open several more Certified Used Centers across North America in the future.

CONTINENTAL

is Designing a Healthy Ecosystem for Climate - friendly, Economic and Social Mobility • Continental presents its environmental strategy: Renewable energy at all production sites from 2020, CO2-neutral in production by 2040 • CEO Dr. Elmar Degenhart urges the automotive industry to be CO2-neutral by 2050 • Continental is ready for the future: Innovations such as fully integrated axle drive are the basis of a healthy mobility ecosystem • Degenhart: “Optimism instead of doing without mobility! We are working on new technologies to protect not only the ecological climate, but the economic and social ones as well.” Frankfurt am Main, September 10, 2019. At this year’s IAA press conference, Continental CEO Dr. Elmar Degenhart presented solutions regarding the most urgent challenges facing the automotive industry. Degenhart is optimistic that the automotive industry can achieve 34 PlantAndEquipment.com | October 2019

CO2-neutrality across the entire supply chain by 2050. Specifically, the company has set the goal for itself to be CO2-neutral in all of its production processes by 2040. As a first step, Continental aims to procure its electricity exclusively from renewable sources at all of its worldwide production sites by the end of 2020. For Continental, a CO2-neutral production constitutes part of the requisite healthy mobility ecosystem. The technology company will present numerous pioneering innovations at the IAA under the slogan of “Mobility is the Heartbeat of Life.” The innovations provide for the reduction of emissions, enhanced safety and greater connectivity and digitalization for more comfort and convenience as well as fewer accidents. In view of the weakening economic situation and the investments that are required for the mobility of the future and digitalization, Degenhart called on the German government to support the economy by reducing tax and duties for companies and consumers.

latest NEWS // CONTINENTAL Continental is the architect for the healthy ecosystem of mobility With its IAA slogan “Mobility is the Heartbeat of Life,” Continental is building on one conviction: There is no quality of life without mobility. Continental understands itself as an architect in this regard: “We are designing the healthy ecosystem of mobility. Healthy mobility is the opposite of doing without mobility. Healthy mobility is optimism in our future. It is clean, safe and connected. Our solutions help people and society to achieve a higher quality of life, faster progress, greater environmental protection, and more personal opportunities for the future. Our heart beats for this,” said Degenhart at the IAA, while explaining Continental’s mission for a positive transformation of mobility. He expressed that, for Continental only a healthy mobility ecosystem can sustainably meet any future mobility needs, enable long-term and profitable growth for companies, create attractive jobs and contribute to prosperity. Continental presents its new environmental strategy: CO2-neutral in production by 2040 “Future mobility will be climate-friendly, as well as economically and socially viable,” said Degenhart at the IAA, while he outlined the future mobility ecosystem. “Our aim in this is to have technologies that are both ecoefficient and socially acceptable. In this way, we protect not only the ecological climate, but the economic and social climates as well. To achieve this, we have to take all of these things into account right from the production stage.”

In Frankfurt, Degenhart presented various components of Continental’s new environmental strategy. The technology company will be further optimizing its production processes with regard to CO2 emissions achieving complete CO2-neutrality by 2040. “We want to become even more energyefficient,” Degenhart explained. “In terms of sales, we will reduce our energy expenditures by a fifth over the next ten years.” In addition, Continental is fully committed to renewable energy. By the end of 2020, the company aims to procure 100 percent of the electricity it uses at its worldwide production sites from renewable sources. Other elements of Continental’s environmental strategy relate to resource efficiency, waste reduction, and the sustainable use of water in regions where access to clean water is extremely difficult. An appeal to legislators: Reduce the tax burden on the industry! The technology company Continental is taking the IAA as an opportunity to make a clear appeal to legislators in Germany. “Germany is subject to the highest corporate taxes of all of the OECD countries. In addition, social expenditures are very high here, and energy costs are the second highest in the world. With such high burdens, we cannot continue to compete globally when growth is stagnating. Lower taxes and costs allow for higher investments and thus more innovations! Something has to be done,” Degenhart emphasized.

Production of the fully integrated drive module will start in Europe and China before the end of this year

“We are convinced that by 2050 at the latest, the automotive industry must be CO2-neutral. This is feasible if business and politics tackle it together. Therefore, we appeal to politicians to set targets that are eco-efficient, i.e. economically sensible and environmentally achievable,” said Degenhart. He added: “Our industry can keep mobility clean in a sustainable manner, especially if it gets greater support at this point. After all, the German automotive industry is indeed ready for the future. If you start experimenting with the automotive industry, you are tampering with one of the biggest and most influencing factors in the German economic area, and it could have far-reaching consequences, both positive and negative.” At the same time, Degenhart wishes for more confidence in this time of change: “What we lack is more optimism. In Germany, we tend to speak ill of our capabilities and performance. It would be better to acknowledge and foster our strengths!” Degenhart referred to innovative achievements in the automotive industry: the evolutionary changes in the areas of automated, autonomous and connected driving, as well as the radical disruptive changes in electric powertrain technology. Continental is showcasing an electric drive system at the IAA that not only reduces weight and cuts costs for vehicle manufacturers, but also shortens the development time to volume 36 PlantAndEquipment.com | October 2019

production thanks to the high level of system integration. Lower emissions, fewer bicycle accidents: future-oriented innovations for the healthy mobility ecosystem of the future In addition to its fully integrated electric axle drive, Continental is presenting at the IAA many other innovations for healthy mobility. Visitors to the trade fair can try out a driving simulator in which they can experience safe, intelligent and stress-free driving in a connected car of the future. “High-performance computers, intelligent surfaces and cloud connectivity will turn the vehicle of the future into a digital companion,” said Degenhart, pointing out the efforts being made in the area of connectivity. In addition, Continental is presenting its brand-new short-range radar sensor. The key feature of this sensor is that it can detect other road users and obstacles with great accurately. A cornering assistant can thus recognize a road hazard much faster than ever before and can warn the driver more quickly, request emergency braking or trigger emergency braking automatically. This will help to avoid bicycle accidents with trucks or cars, for example. “It has been our firm conviction for many years that traffic accidents belong nowhere better than in museums. The technical solutions are evolving in our hands right now,” Degenhart said confidently.

latest NEWS // MAMMOET

Moving to a Greener Avocado

M

ammoet has assisted with the transport of a zero-emission mobile harbor crane from the Port of Bremerhaven, Germany, to the Port of Hueneme in California, USA. The hybrid crane, which can be powered by electricity, was purchased by the Port of Hueneme as part of their long term vision to move to zero emission cargo handling. One of the steps towards this vision is to use this crane to deliver the world’s first “zero-emission ship-to-store avocado”. Mammoet transport operation helps Port towards zero-emissions cargo handling. The Port of Hueneme is part of an initiative to reduce the carbon impact of transporting avocados to California, which currently results in a surprisingly large carbon footprint. Grown in South America they are shipped under temperature controlled conditions, resulting in high carbon emissions. The Port has a vision to achieve zero emission cargo handling, thus eliminating the emissions from one part of the avocado-shipping process. The Port’s new hybrid crane, a Liebherr LHM420 harbor mobile crane, can run on electricity and will make a vital contribution to this goal. Mammoet was contracted to assist the customer, NYK Line, to load and unload the German-manufactured crane body onto the vessel Cassiopeia Leader. Mammoet 38 PlantAndEquipment.com | October 2019

moved the under carriage of the dismantled harbor crane from the quay side at the Port of Bremerhaven onto the “Roll-on/Roll-off” vessel. Once it had arrived in the USA a Mammoet team transported the 107-ton under carriage onto the quay side at the port in California. For both locations Mammoet sourced locallyavailable equipment, from a nearby terminal operator at Bremerhaven and from a nearby project in Los Angeles. This minimized the carbon impact of the transport and enabled a swift mobilization. Teams from across Mammoet worked in cooperation to execute the two operations, firstly in Bremerhaven, where the under carriage was loaded onto the vessel using SPMTs and then in California, for the unloading operation. The maneuverability and load spreading ability of the SPMTs enable the team to execute the move within the limited 150tonne capacity of the vessel’s ramp. Mammoet’s Hamburg office provided a permanent point of contact for NYK Line. With this one-stop-shop approach, Mammoet delivered transport solutions for both ports with different local conditions. This saved the client further coordination efforts and guaranteed a safe and reliable execution, delivering the same high standards at both project locations on two different continents.

A New Cabless Concept - Revealing Scania AXL

I

ntroducing the latest member of our autonomous family: Scania AXL, a fully autonomous concept truck, without a cab.

In what is another milestone in the development of heavy self-driving vehicles, a group of Scania experts in different fields have teamed up and developed a concept truck, which, even without the cab, has the company’s modular system at the heart of the design. As different industries look to streamline transport assignments and make them more sustainable, self-driving vehicles are increasingly being considered. Mines and large closed construction sites are examples of environments that are favourable for selfdriving pilots since they are well-controlled locations. “A significant step towards the transport systems of the future” “With the Scania AXL concept truck, we are taking a significant step towards the smart transport systems of the future, where self-driving vehicles will play a natural part,” says Scania’s President and CEO Henrik Henriksson. “We continue to build and pilot concepts to demonstrate what we can do with the technology that is available today.” For autonomous vehicles, software is in many ways more important than hardware. Scania

40 PlantAndEquipment.com | October 2019

AXL is steered and monitored by an intelligent control environment. In mines, for example, the autonomous operations are facilitated by a logistics system that tells the vehicle how it should perform. “We already have self-driving trucks in customer operations. However so far, they have been with room for a safety driver who can intervene if necessary. Scania AXL does not have a cab and that changes the game significantly,” says Claes Erixon, Head of Research and Development at Scania. “The development in self-driving vehicles has made great strides in the past years. We still don’t have all the answers, but through concept vehicles like Scania AXL we break new ground and continue to learn at great speed.” Mix of traditional and new technology The combustion engine that powers the concept vehicle is an example of how traditional and new technology is mixed. It is advantageously powered by renewable biofuel. The robust and powerful features and design behind Scania AXL match the tougher environments in mines and large construction sites. A new intelligent front module replaces the traditional cab, but even without a cab the concept is easily recognisable as a Scania.

This facilitates flexible and synergetic production in direct correlation with customer demand. Maximum benefit thanks to intelligent design The electric drive train (eATS) of the MercedesBenz EQV is situated on the front axle under the dynamic front end of the car with a charging connection in the bumper. It has a peak output of 150 kW. The electric motor, the transmission with a fixed gear ratio, the cooling system and the power electronics constitute a highly integrated, compact unit. The power is provided by a lithium ion battery under the floor of the vehicle. Its low, central location also has a positive effect on the handling characteristics of the EQV. A top speed of up to 160 km/h also ensures that you quickly get to where you are going outside an urban environment. As standard the Mercedes-Benz EQV is equipped with a water-cooled on-board charger (OBC) with a capacity of 11 kW, making it suitable for AC charging at home or at public charging stations. The battery, which has a usable capacity of 90 kWh, facilitates a maximum range of 405 kilometres (provisional figures)1. The installation of the battery in the space below the floor means that all of the space is available, with no impact on the interior of the vehicle. This means that the fully electric MPV from Mercedes-Benz also meets the highest standards in terms

of functionality and variability and covers a large number of applications. In the private sphere, for example, families benefit from a multitude of seating configurations as well as a good conscience from producing zero local emissions. Six individual seats, on the other hand, turn the Mercedes-Benz EQV into a representative shuttle vehicle that meets all of the requirements for the high-quality transportation of people with a comfortable and particularly quiet driving experience. The flexible installation of individual or bench seats also allows the EQV to be converted into a 7- or even an 8-seater. MBUX in the EQV: electric and intelligent The refinement of MBUX specifically for EQ is a particular highlight. In the high-resolution, 10-inch media display, the EQ tile in the main menu serves as a central point of access to the specific displays and settings. These include the charging current, departure time, energy flow and consumption histogram. The media display can also be used to operate the navigation and Mercedes me Charge functions, as well as the driving modes. One of the strengths of MBUX is its intelligent voice control with natural language comprehension, which is activated by the keyword “Hey Mercedes”. The voice control supports many infotainment functions (e.g. destination input, phone calls, music selection, writing and hearing messages, weather forecast), as well as numerous convenience functions such as climate control/lighting. And MBUX also applies its strengths in combination with the Mercedes me App outside the vehicle. EQV drivers can

plan their destinations from the home or office, enter a departure time and bring the interior to the desired temperature.

a charging stop is missed. It is also assisted by the E+ driving mode, which optimises the vehicle’s parameters to maximise the range.

Maximum range thanks to intelligent recuperation and different driving modes

Comprehensive electromobility ecosystem with numerous charging opportunities

To ensure that the technical operating range is used to the maximum, the Mercedes-Benz EQV also charges its batteries when on the move. When accelerating or braking, the mechanical rotation is converted into electrical energy and used to charge the high-voltage battery (recuperation). The driver has a major influence on recuperation. He/she is also able to influence the recuperation level using paddles behind the steering wheel. The paddle on the left increases the level of recuperation, the paddle on the right reduces it. At the weakest level the vehicle “coasts”, while at the strongest level it is possible to drive using a single pedal. This is because, in most situations, the slowing effect of recuperation is sufficient to make the brake pedal redundant.

Part of the EQ technology brand is a comprehensive electromobility ecosystem, which the Mercedes-Benz EQV benefits from as the youngest member of the EQ family. This includes a holistic range of services, and ranges from vehicle functions such as adapted navigation through to the charging infrastructure. Via Mercedes me Charge, the customer receives access to the world’s largest charging network with over 300 000 charging points and over different operators of public charging stations in Europe alone (municipalities, car parks, motorways, shopping centres, etc.). Customers benefit from an integrated payment function with simple invoicing. Mercedes me Charge also allows access to the quick-charging stations of the pan-European network IONITY. Especially over long distances, the short charging times make for a pleasant journey. By 2020 IONITY will construct and operate around 400 quickcharging stations along the main traffic arteries in Europe. IONITY was founded in November 2017 as a joint venture by BMW Group, Daimler AG, Ford Motor Company and the Volkswagen group with Audi and Porsche.

The recuperation level D Auto reflects the intelligence of the EQV. The automatically activated ECO Assistant helps the driver to achieve the best possible efficiency. It combines navigation data, road traffic sign recognition and information provided by the intelligent safety assistance systems (radar and camera), and adjusts the level of recuperation itself. In combination with EQ-optimised navigation, active range monitoring ensures that the driver reaches the destination safely even if 44 PlantAndEquipment.com | October 2019

socket. In cooperation with country-specific charger installation partners, Mercedes-Benz also offers easy and rapid installation of the Mercedes-Benz Wallbox and professional advice on all aspects of e-mobility. DC charging using the series-standard CCS (Combined Charging Systems) is even faster. In Europe the EQV can be charged with a maximum output of up to 110 kW at an appropriate charging station. It then takes less than 45 minutes to charge from 10 to 80 per cent SoC (State of Charge). Design with specific EQ aesthetic One element that all EQ vehicles have in common is their design with a specific avant garde aesthetic. The focal point is the black panel radiator grille with chrome fins, as well as the clear side profile with specific, EQ design, lightweight, 18-inch wheels, which make a dynamic impression even when stationary. The aesthetic of the exterior is continued in the interior, where the cool aesthetic is complemented by warm accents such as rose gold, underscoring the “welcome home” effect. The heart of the interaction between driver and machine is the intuitive Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX). This combines a 10-inch touch screen with learning voice operation and innovative connectivity features. Introduced with the Mercedes-Benz EQC (combined power consumption: 20.8 - 19.7 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/ km) , the cover material in “Midnight Blue”

gives the dashboard top and interior door trim a progressive, cool touch. Decorative stitching in rose gold on the seats and the related interior surfaces again provides the warm contrast. The Mercedes-Benz EQV as a new milestone for the “EQ” technology brand The “EQ” technology brand founded by Mercedes-Benz in 2016 stands for the consistent ongoing development of electromobility. It all started with the “Concept EQ”. This was followed by the Concept EQA in the compact class at the 2017 IAA. In September 2018 the brand presented its first series-produced vehicle in the form of the EQC electric SUV (combined power consumption: 20.8 - 19.7 kWh/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 0 g/km)2. In March 2019, the Concept EQV at the Geneva Motor Show indicated a potential expansion of the model range in the MPV segment, with up to eight seats. The series-produced version of the Mercedes-Benz EQV that has now been presented marks a new milestone in the development of the “EQ” technology brand. [1] Figures for electrical consumption and range are provisional and were determined by the technical service for the certification according to UN/ECE-regulation 101. EC type approval and conformity certification with official figures are not yet available. There may be differences between the stated figures and the official figures.

NEW FORD EDGE

Edge ST use Artificial Intelligence to Help Improve Traction, Reduce Fuel Usage • New 2019 Ford Edge, including performance-enhanced Edge ST, introduces new all-wheel-drive disconnect, a first-forFord system that helps improve traction and reduce gas usage over the previous model • All-wheel-drive disconnect switches automatically between two-wheel and allwheel drive in a fraction of a second, using a form of artificial intelligence to sift through information like wheel slip, road conditions, vehicle speed, windshield wiper usage and outside temperature • Other Edge and Edge ST tech features that help reduce fuel consumption include active transmission warm-up, deceleration fuel shutoff and exhaust gas recirculation The new 2019 Ford Edge with available allwheel drive is smart enough to detect various driving conditions and automatically shift between two-wheel and all-wheel drive. The feature provides all-wheel-drive traction when it is needed, and helps reduce fuel consumption when it’s not. 46 PlantAndEquipment.com | October 2019

The system is called all-wheel-drive disconnect, a first-for-Ford technology that uses a form of artificial intelligence that can calculate quicker than the human brain. Based on information received from dozens of hightech sensors, the new Edge can determine in a fraction of a second whether all-wheel drive is needed. “The concept is pretty simple, it was the execution that was the challenge,” said Adriaan Coetzee, Ford Middle East and Africa’s Product Marketing director. “Shifting between two- and all-wheel drive needs to be fast and seamless enough that the customer doesn’t know it is happening.” The system uses an all-new dedicated electronic brain that receives inputs from dozens of sensors throughout the vehicle. It interacts with the traction control system to detect wheel slip, receiving inputs from the anti-lock brakes to learn if that system is active. It even detects if the windshield wipers are on, whether the Edge is towing a trailer, and the outside temperature.

latest NEWS // FORD Power control - on the fly An algorithm that uses “fuzzy logic” processes all of the data to determine if all-wheel or frontwheel drive are optimal. Constantly monitoring, the system can detect in 10 milliseconds the need to engage or disengage all-wheel drive. It can quickly distribute up to 100 percent of the available power from the front to the rear wheels, depending on driving conditions detected by the system. “‘Fuzzy logic’ refers to the algorithm,” Coetzee said. “It’s like you or I determining what to wear based on reading a weather forecast, where we’re going, the time of year and looking outside. In the case of the new Edge, just because the windshield wipers are on doesn’t mean all-wheel drive is going to engage. The algorithm makes the call based on a variety of things that are happening - but much faster than a person could process. “There are similar systems out there, but none quite like this,” he added. “The fact that we’re able to switch seamlessly and without any input from the driver, that’s the real magic.” More tech to burn less fuel All-wheel-drive disconnect is only one reason for the 2019 Ford Edge’s improved fuel economy ratings. All-wheel drive equipped vehicles have an estimated fuel economy rating of 13.3 km/l while front-wheel drive vehicles have a rating of 13.8 km/l. With standard all-wheel drive and a 2.7-litre V6 EcoBoost® engine, Edge ST, the first SUV from the Ford Performance team, has an estimated fuel economy rating of 11.8 km/l. Actual mileage may vary.

Those ratings represent improvements over current Edge models - improvements that the addition of several new technologies as well as a handful of aerodynamic enhancements helped achieve. Fuel-saving tech features on the new Edge include the following: • New 8-speed automatic transmission introduces two overdrive gears, which decrease engine rpm for improved fuel economy during highway cruising • Active transmission warm-up uses reclaimed heat energy to warm up the transmission faster. This, along with a durable, synthetic, ultra-low-viscosity fluid - engineered specifically for the new Edge - reduces component friction and helps save fuel • Standard Auto Start-Stop helps save fuel by shutting off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and automatically restarts when the driver releases the brake pedal • Deceleration fuel shut-off stops fuel flow to the engine when the vehicle is reducing speed • Exhaust gas recirculation not only reduces harmful emissions, but increases efficiency by allowing a larger throttle position, thereby reducing pumping losses To improve Edge aerodynamics, 2019 models are equipped with active grille shutters, full underbody shields and air curtains that create a high-pressure region of air around the outer surface of the wheels and tires for reduced drag.
