AL GHANDI AUTO SHIFTS TO HYDROGEN GENERATORS FOR CLEANER ENERGY

Al Ghandi Auto’s new hydrogen gensets produce electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, with the only byproduct being pure water droplets. This process, known as electrochemical conversion, guarantees that hydrogen gensets release no CO2, toxic fumes, or fine particles into the atmosphere.

Al Ghandi Auto, the exclusive distributor of GMC and Chevrolet in Dubai and the Northern Emirates, as well as Cadillac in the UAE, has recently installed two innovative hydrogen gensets to provide environmentally friendly power to the electric-vehicle (EV) charging stations in the company’s stockyard. Using the most advanced technology, known as hydrogen fuel cells, chemical energy is converted to electricity, with zero emissions, zero vibration, and almost zero noise, thus revolutionizing how businesses meet their energy requirements.

Al Ghandi Auto estimates that using these two hydrogen gensets instead of two diesel generators will reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 30 tons per year, which is equivalent to planting 1,300 trees. This aligns perfectly with Al Ghandi Auto’s commitment to reducing negative environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices.

“The successful installation and operation of two hydrogen gensets demonstrates our unwavering commitment towards local and global community,” said Mark Jenkins, CEO of Al Ghandi Auto Group. “Al Ghandi Auto is completely aligned with our leadership’s goals for the UAE’s sustainable development and is already making strides to secure a better tomorrow for future generations.”.

WITHOUT LIMITS

The Zetros is the culmination of over 120 years of expertise and know-how. This one-of-a-kind off-road truck, made in Wörth at the world’s biggest truck assembly factory, exemplifies the high quality associated with the Made in Germany mark.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS 20

Juffali Commercial Vehicles, one of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s premier automotive distributors, has unveiled the new and upgraded MercedesBenz Zetros, which is intended to handle tough circumstances on both the road and off-road terrain.

The Mercedes-Benz Zetros can travel beyond the boundaries of a standard truck and can endure obstacles such as potholes, muddy ruts, mountains, hills, sand, dust, cold, and heat. It offers drivers and crew members comfort and safety, making it the ideal truck for both off-road and on-road operations.

“With our unwavering commitment to quality, we proudly stand behind our slogan of delivering trustworthy trucks with added power,” says Schulze. “While tried and tested features remain, we have also made significant improvements to ensure that the Zetros always reaches its destination without compromise. Experience the unmatched power of the Zetros today.”

This cab-behind-engine truck not only excels in offroad capabilities and operating strength in extreme conditions but is now also a dependable option for long-distance haulage. Whether it be rough and dusty terrain or poorly maintained asphalt roads, this truck is up for the challenge. Its resilience knows no limits. “Our vehicles are designed, constructed, and tested with daily usage in mind. We only expect trucks that can deliver practical performance to meet our high standards, as well as yours,” adds Schulze.

The Zetros is available in twelve various configurations, all of which are available directly from the manufacturer. It may be configured as a dumper, platform vehicle, or semitrailer truck with two or three wheels and all-wheel drive, giving it a great choice for any work in Saudi Arabia.

“We are a leading provider in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and have a deep understanding of the intricate and rigorous demands,” says Schulze. “Our services include the transportation of pipes, chemicals, drilling equipment, personnel, fuel, water, and other materials to and from exploration and drilling sites - even in the most challenging and remote terrains.”

Engine Concept

The Zetros is available as a 4×2/4×4 vehicle with a 6-cylinder in-line engine in 18–22 tons weight variants. The 6×4/6×6 variants of the Zetros with a 6-cylinder in-line engine are available as 25–40-ton weight variants.

As a 3-axle semitrailer tractor powered by the OM 460 engine, with a permissible gross combination weight of up to 120t, the Zetros offers enough reserves to reliably transport the heaviest loads on multi-axle trailers far beyond paved roads.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS www.PlantAndEquipment.com 21

Axle Configurations

The Zetros comes with standard 14.00 R 20 tires, which provide extra traction and ground clearance due to their single design. However, there are other options available, including 395/85 R 20 tires, as well as twin tires in varying weights and sizes.

The spare tire is safely stored underneath the vehicle’s frame on the left side and doesn’t affect the break-over angle or ground clearance. It’s an exact match to the mounted tires and can be easily removed and replaced using the spare wheel jack.

Reinforced frame

The Zetros is designed for optimal off-road conditions. It features a sturdy, long-lasting ladder-type frame with open C-section longitudinal members and bolted C-section cross members, based on the straight frame of the Actros. The frame is reinforced for maximum durability and is torsionally flexible with 2 x 500 mm axle articulations along the diagonal. The

front end of the frame is designed for attaching front-mounted implements and for raising or towing the vehicle. This frame concept allows for high flexibility when it comes to choosing bodies for the vehicle.

As a standard feature, the Zetros comes with dependable, low-maintenance drum brakes. Its anti-lock braking system (ABS) can be activated to lessen the braking distance, even on uneven or off-road surfaces. The steering is effortless and user-friendly, with a hydraulic 1-circuit power steering of type ZF 8098 that operates at a high pressure of up to 150 bar. This ensures comfortable and non-fatiguing steering, with automatic bleeding of the hydraulic system and an adjustable steering column.

The truck is capable of maneuvering in deep water. It has elevated ventilation and air intake above the cab, as well as headlamps that can ford through water. The standard fording depth for the Zetros is 800mm, but with the appropriate modifications (special equipment), it can even go up to 1,190mm.

Comfort

Due to their unique design placing the cab behind the front axle, cab-behind-engine vehicles offer several advantages for drivers, especially on rough and bumpy roads. The front bonnet provides smooth and comfortable handling. With no engine tunnel, there is more space in the cabin for movement and safe entry and exit on the side of the vehicle away from traffic. The spacious cab accommodates three modern, comfortable seats and storage for equipment or a sleeping area on the back wall. As a result, drivers can handle the Zetros with ease and less fatigue, even on long trips.

Juffali Commercial Vehicles is presently providing the Mercedes-Benz Zetros with a two-year or 250,000-kilometer warranty, whichever comes first..

ALIGNING ASSETS WITH NEEDS

Amjad Lutfi Atieh explains what it takes to source used Cat and SEM machines that are equipped to meet the exacting standards of Al-Bahar’s customer base.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - COVER STORY 24

Mohamed Abdulrahman Al-Bahar – often referred to as Al-Bahar – has been supplying equipment to customers in the Middle East for more than 60 years. Since its formation in 1959, the Sharjah-headquartered company has established operations across the Gulf region, acting as the official Caterpillar dealer, offering Cat and SEM products in the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar.

Al-Bahar has succeeded in building an enviable reputation within a diverse array of market segments, from earthmoving, infrastructure and construction to mining, energy and even marine propulsion. While new equipment sales continue to represent its core focus, the dealer has significantly expanded its used and rental operations over the course of the last decade – all with a view to providing the broadest possible range of options to its customers.

Amjad Lutfi Atieh, Rental and Used Equipment Manager at AlBahar, emphasises that – regardless of the segment in question

– the company’s number-one priority is always to offer value to its customers.

“Even though Al-Bahar is operating in the used equipment segment, it is not just a used equipment supplier,” Atieh tells Plant & Equipment. “First and foremost, we are a Caterpillar dealer. We entered the used segment with one main objective: to provide our customers with alternative solutions at lower acquisition costs, negating the need for them to buy brandnew machines if their applications are less intensive or if their budgets are constrained.”

Al-Bahar has implemented a series of measures to reassure equipment buyers considering alternative modes of acquisition. As part of its ‘Cat Certified Used’ programme, used machines sold by the dealer come with comprehensive warranties – an attractive differentiator in this market segment.

What’s more, Atieh and his colleagues go out of their way to avoid the ‘hard sell’, preferring instead to gather all relevant

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - COVER STORY www.PlantAndEquipment.com 25

information before recommending any particular course of action. “All our salespeople work in line with Al-Bahar’s ‘RUN’ concept, which stands for ‘rental, used and new’,” he explains. “Our main job is to understand what the customer needs. What is their business? Our goal is to act as a consultant, identifying the best solution to meet their needs regardless of whether that happens to be new, used or rental equipment.”

When used equipment does represent the best fit for a particular customer, Al-Bahar goes to great lengths to provide peace of mind, according to Atieh. “We don’t want to lose a customer by selling them a used machine that could cause problems,” he says. “This could jeopardise our entire business relationship. This is why we put all our efforts into ensuring the units we sell are in truly excellent condition.”

One of the most important components of Al-Bahar’s quality assurance process is its approach to sourcing. The majority of used machines sold by the company come directly from its

rental fleet, which is continuously and exclusively replenished with brand-new units from Cat and SEM.

“Because of this, we know the full history of the used equipment we sell,” Atieh explains. “Our well-trained and professional technicians conduct all maintenance in line with the manufacturer guidelines, and our machines are also connected, meaning that every single alert – every single issue – is reported directly to our team and recorded.”

An additional advantage offered by Al-Bahar’s rental-focused sourcing model is that these machines are often operated by trained rental operators, meaning buyers can have confidence that the longevity of their purchases will not have been compromised by inexperienced users.

The minority of used machines that do not originate from Al-Bahar’s rental fleet are sourced from other Caterpillar dealers, meaning Atieh and his team know they have been

26

maintained to the same robust standards. Moreover, each used machine undergoes a comprehensive 140-point pre-sale inspection to ensure it is in the best possible condition when it reaches the customer.

Thanks to its stringent sourcing methodology and rigorous quality assurance processes, Al-Bahar is able to offer an array of supplementary support to ensure customer satisfaction. As part of its ongoing promotional campaign for used machines, certified used equipment is sold under warranty in tandem with Customer Value Agreements (CVAs), meaning prospective buyers do not have to purchase new equipment to take advantage of the company’s extensive aftersales support network. Additional benefits for used machinery buyers include service contracts, free protection plans, and access to both Cat Inspect and Cat Connect technology, providing stateof-the-art remote monitoring functionality to fleet operators. Caterpillar’s VisionLink functionality is also available to

Al-Bahar customers, allowing them to conduct effective fleet management through valuable performance-related insights.

Of course, Al-Bahar’s affiliation with US-headquartered equipment giant Caterpillar, coupled with its uncompromising approach to quality, means the company’s used machinery offering is not the cheapest in the region. As Atieh points out, Al-Bahar has maintained its market-leading position by focusing on value and delivering an excellent customer experience.

“To remain competitive, we need to ensure Al-Bahar’s reputation is maintained,” he says. “And that comes from the customers’ experience with us. We are selling used machines that are in excellent condition and equipped to meet our clients’ requirements. Whenever a customer encounters an issue, they know they have a partner that is ready to provide support at all times.”

What’s more, Atieh notes that the strong resale value associated with Caterpillar units represents a unique selling point for Al-Bahar. “Fleet managers know that Caterpillar machinery offers the highest resale value. They understand that when the time comes to sell their equipment, used Caterpillar machines command a strong price.”

So, what are Atieh’s expectations for the Middle East’s used equipment market over the coming 12 months? “Last year, we saw huge demand in the used segment, driven by the low availability and rising demand for new machines,” he says. “This demand stayed consistent in the first six months of 2023.

“My opinion is that demand for used equipment will remain strong during the coming year,” he continues. “We are seeing new activities starting in our territories, mainly in the UAE, which are likely to drive more sales of both new and used machines. Also, our neighbours in Saudi Arabia are witnessing huge demand, and whenever there is a growing need for equipment in the Kingdom, fleet operators tend to come to the Emirates to source units.

“It is my expectation that this combination of factors will help Al-Bahar to continue to grow its used equipment sales over the coming year,” Atieh concludes..

CAPITALISING ON A MOBILE CRANE BOOM

Manitowoc’s Andrew A. Youssef and Liebherr’s Marius Kleck speak to James Morgan about the ever-rising demand for mobile cranes across the Middle East.

28 MIDDLE EAST NEWS - MOBILE CRANES

Thanks to their speedy setup times, versatility and – as the name suggests – mobility, mobile cranes have represented a go-to utility tool for Middle East contractors for decades. From the region’s iconic skyscrapers and large-scale residential projects to its maritime and energy sectors, these fleet-footed heavy lifters have played a pivotal role in the Gulf’s rapid development.

Analysts from Business Market Insights expect the Middle East and Africa’s (MEA) mobile crane market to reach almost $1.9 billion within the next five years, compared to approximately £1.7 billion in 2021. And while a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1 percent during 2021-28 may not sound ground-breaking, remember: we’re talking about huge numbers.

US-headquartered Manitowoc Company, the organisation behind Grove mobile cranes, has been extremely busy in the Middle East in recent years. Andrew A. Youssef, the manufacturer’s General Manager – Middle East, Africa and CIS, tells Plant & Equipment that Grove cranes have supported the development of a number of high-profile regional projects, including Riyadh Metro and King Salman Park in Saudi Arabia, and the North Field Expansion (NFE) project in Qatar.

“A Grove GMK6300L, sold by our dealer Mannai, was also used in the construction of the 68,895-seat capacity Al Bayt Stadium for FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar,” Youssef adds. “You may remember that this stadium was among the tournament’s most unique as it resembled a traditional tent used by the host nation’s nomadic people.”

Commenting on his employer’s expanding order book, Youssef continues: “Like other heavy machinery manufacturers, Manitowoc has benefitted from a market resurgence over the past 12 months in the Middle East. This uptick has resulted from a culmination of pent-up demand, supply chain stability and megaproject announcements.

“Our office in the Middle East was able to capitalise on this market upswing thanks to Manitowoc’s success in controlling costs, producing accurate forecasts and remaining in constant communication with its customers and dealers,” says Youssef. “We have seen new machine sales increase across both mobile and tower product lines. Most notably, our mobile aftermarket sales have grown by 46% year-on-year, as customers look to refurbish their Grove cranes to compensate for extended lead times and reduced availability for new units.”

German-Swiss heavy equipment giant, Liebherr, also appears to be enjoying a purple patch in the Middle East. Marius Kleck, Area Sales Manager – Middle East and Central Africa, says the manufacturer has witnessed increased mobile crane requirements across the region.

“Looking back, the past 12 months were very good for the mobile crane industry,” Kleck says. “Demand has been at a very high level, primarily in Saudi Arabia and Qatar. Liebherr has also exported some units to Kuwait, the UAE and Iraq.

www.PlantAndEquipment.com 29 MIDDLE EAST NEWS - MOBILE CRANES

“We are still seeing high demand in Saudi Arabia, especially in the Eastern Province,” he continues. “This is being driven by new activities in the oil and gas sector from Saudi Aramco and its affiliated companies, but also by projects associated with NEOM, such as The Line, Oxagon, The Spine and Trojena.”

Manitowoc’s Youssef certainly seems to agree with this assessment, noting that regional demand for mobile cranes “is at an all-time high”, thanks to programmes and initiatives including Saudi Vision 2030, Qatar NFE, Palm Jebel Ali in the UAE, and a range of energy transition projects.

“When I look at the mobile crane market, I think it is due for a renaissance,” Youssef explains. “The last large-volume cycle was from 2011-14. In 2015, oil prices dropped, leading to the

market buckling and a tough period from 2016-19. We were poised for growth in 2020, but we know what happened next. The market adopted a ‘wait-and-see’ approach into late-2021 as shipping prices settled. We finally saw a return to normalcy in 2022, but that was also short-lived. As the conflict between Russia and Ukraine started in February of last year, supply chains became chaotic again, and it was unclear what would happen next.

“Rising oil prices and an exodus of foreign direct investment (FDI) from Russia created a perfect storm of investment opportunities here in the Middle East, in what is perceived to be a safe market,” he adds. “Customers who were looking to renew their fleets in 2020, 2021 and 2022 are now facing a bottleneck as manufacturers don’t have the production capacity to support demand. Consequently, we are seeing a shift in the model mix; customers want heavier-capacity cranes with longer booms, and Manitowoc’s product line caters to these requirements.”

In terms of the sectors currently fuelling orders for mobile cranes in the Middle East, Liebherr’s Kleck highlights the oil, gas and petrochemical sector as the biggest driver, followed by construction-related projects. “In addition, there are various infrastructure initiatives such as ports, airports and railway developments designed to improve transportation within the region,” he adds. “We are also seeing significant opportunities within the renewable energy sector, both for larger mobile cranes and crawler cranes.”

Manitowoc’s Youssef says: “We are seeing two types of demand across the Middle East: base and vision. Fleetrenewal activities are supporting base demand in oil and gas,

infrastructure and general civil construction. Then there is vision-related demand, which is being driven by speculation based on gigaproject announcements from the UAE and Saudi Arabia. Rental companies and contractors are getting the signal that they need to start building their plant capacity to win contracts.”

Youssef highlights three Grove models that are proving particularly popular among Middle East customers at present: the GMK5250XL-1, which boasts a 78.5m boom and 250t capacity; the GMK6300L-1 with its 80m boom and 300t capacity; and the GRT8100-1, which features a 12-47m fullpower MEGAFORM boom and a 100t capacity.

“With its small footprint and excellent manoeuvrability, the GMK5250XL-1 has a single-engine design as well as one of the longest booms and highest capacities in the industry,” he says. “The GMK6300L-1 continues the success story of the GMK6300L, offering even better lifting capacities, especially on the long boom. The GRT8100-1, meanwhile, integrates the wide cab and carrier of the GRT8120 with the superstructure of the GRT8100, delivering improved operations, easier serviceability and added jobsite flexibility with its MAXbase outrigger system.”

Commenting on Liebherr’s most sought-after mobile cranes, Kleck says: “In the all-terrain segment, the most popular models are the LTM 1120-4.1, LTM 1150-5.3, LTM 13006.3 and, of course, our LTM 1650-8.1. In the rough-terrain segment, both of our models – the LRT 1090-2.1 and LRT 1100-2.1 – are in high demand.

“Each of Liebherr’s crane concepts offers special advantages that cater to current requirements in the Middle East,” Kleck explains.

“However, in general, maximum performance combined with compactness, innovative technology and high-standard safety features are the main priorities for our customers.”

Looking ahead, Kleck predicts that regional mobile crane demand will continue to rise, highlighting the Red Sea Project, NEOM, Qiddiya in Riyadh, oil, gas and petrochemical activities in the Eastern Province, and the transmission line project in the Western Province as key drivers in Saudi Arabia. In Qatar, he believes demand is likely to be mainly driven by liquefied natural gas (LNG) projects.

“The Middle East is very promising,” Kleck concludes. “Liebherr is expecting to witness high demand for lifting equipment over the coming 12 months and beyond.”.

XCMG MACHINERY ASSISTS THE DANGOTE REFINERY IN NIGERIA

SARENS INSTALLS

STEEL BEAMS IN EGYPT

Sarens recently took part in the construction of the Al Hadarat Bridge in Cairo, which will be one of the tallest bridges in Africa. Over the course of several weeks, Sarens performed two lifting operations on behalf of Arab Contractors, bringing the bridge project closer to completion. Sarens began by lifting and installing eleven 150-tonne, 41m steel beams. The crew employed a CC4800 crane in SSL configuration with a 66m main boom with a 270T SL CW. They would slew the crane into place after removing each beam from its original location. Over the course of one week, the four-person team successfully completed eleven choices.

The world’s largest oil refinery project, Dangote Refinery in Nigeria, has recently completed construction and begun production. Over the last several years, XCMG Machinery has provided over 2,000 units of equipment, including excavators, cranes, road rollers, and more, to this mega refinery project, ensuring high-intensity, uninterrupted operation.

The Dangote Refinery project covers an area of 2,200 hectares and has the capability to process 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day into refined petroleum products. The refinery will produce 12,000 megawatts of electricity and create more than 135,000 permanent jobs.

XCMG’s products and services have safeguarded the smooth construction progress of the Dangote Refinery. During construction, the average runtime of a single XCMG excavator was more than 8,000 hours. To cope with the harsh environment as Lagos, a city by the sea, has high temperatures, humidity, and dust, which pose great challenges to the adaptability and reliability of construction machinery equipment, XCMG made customized upgrades and improvements to ensure optimum performance.

The XE470D excavator was the main force of the project, which is equipped with the powerful, low-consumption, and environmentally friendly Cummins engine, coupled with an intake system that adopts a three-stage filtration design. The inner and outer filters use Ultra-Web filtering material, which increases the filtration rate to 99.99 percent to cope with the dusty air.

XCMG’s tower cranes also participated in the Magufuli Bridge project, leaping across Lake Victoria, the largest lake in Africa. Composed of a 3,200-meter-long super-large bridge and a connecting 1,660-meter-long approach bridge, it will become the longest bridge in East Africa and the longest low-tower cable-stayed bridge in Africa, connecting Gaita Province and Mwanza Province in Tanzania..

Sarens brought in the CC2600H with a 78m main boom for the following round of lifts for another tight and high execution. The 63 beams, each weighing 90 tonnes and measuring 50m long, were then fitted by a four-person crew. The team slewed into position after taking each beam off the trailer, completing 63 such selections in three weeks..

LINTEC’S ASPHALT PLANT PLAYS KEY ROLE IN

MAJOR

HIGHWAY PROJECT IN EGYPT

The Lintec CSD2500B containerized asphalt machine was purchased by an Egyptian contractor, and its first duty was to assist in building an important road link connecting Aswan’s industrial zones to the main Cairo highway.

36 AFRICA NEWS

Amajor municipal highway contract in Aswan, Egypt, was completed using a Lintec CSD2500B containerized asphalt batching plant. Rsquared Construction, one of Egypt’s leading privately held construction and infrastructure contractors, owns the plant. It was instrumental in the construction of the approximately 3 km-long Semad Highway, which connects Aswan’s industrial parks to the Cairo-Cape Town Highway.

Installed in January 2023, the Lintec CSD2500B began production in February and mixed over 300,000 tons of asphalt for the project, with an average output of 500 tonnes per day. While impressive, this performance is well within the plant’s capacity, given its ability to deliver between 140 and 160 tph at its maximum.

The plant will now be moved to another project, supporting Rsquared’s ambitious business expansion plans. “We bought this plant with the aim of expanding our operations and opening a new branch in Upper Egypt,” says Mohamed Abdel Raouf Hussein, CEO and Founder of Rsquared Construction. “Having the plant there will be a major attraction for projects and will help secure more work in the area.”

www.PlantAndEquipment.com 37 AFRICA NEWS

Deconstruction equipment

A key reason behind Rsquared’s purchasing decision was the ease with which Lintec CSD models can be dismantled before traveling to the next project. The modular design, built entirely within 100% ISO certified sea containers, lends itself to efficient, economical transportation, and makes the plants ideal for short- and long-term projects. Their flat, rigid design also speeds up installation by eliminating the need for concrete foundations.

Lintec makes installation easier by pre-assembling each plant throughout the manufacturing stage before putting it to rigorous testing to ensure maximum dependability.

In addition, the containerized design provides the internal components with a high level of protection against the elements, while reducing noise and dust emissions. On the Aswan project, one of Rsquared’s challenges was coping with the tropical desert climate, with its harsh, sandy conditions that can easily damage unprotected equipment. But thanks to the intelligent design of the Lintec CSD2500B, there were no such concerns for the contractor, with the mixing plant maintaining the highest-quality production in temperatures that often pass 30 degrees Celsius.

Easy access to all levels via walkways and staircases helps to reduce downtime when maintenance is required, while limiting access to one central, lockable security entrance was also important given the tight space available. “The congestion made it harder for us to work, but we have been involved in the roads and bridges sector since 1981, so it wasn’t a first for us – we have completed many projects under similar conditions,” Hussein continues.

The fuel savings provided by the double screen drum technology were another attraction for Rsquared. The combination of heating and screening of minerals in a single process unit, eliminates the need for a hot elevator and vibrating screen, thereby significantly reducing energy costs and maintenance requirements.

“This was an essential project for the Aswan Governorate and part of the presidential initiative to provide a higher living standard for the people of Upper Egypt,” says Tony Chakra, Regional Sales Manager (Middle East & Africa) of Lintec & Linnhoff. “So, in addition to the high equipment requirements, Rsquared placed great importance on production safety and stability. Of course, with our German engineering heritage, Lintec has gained widespread recognition from customers for this, as well as for batching accuracy and mobility performance.”.

BACKHOE TO THE FUTURE

Manitou’s Morad Benayad, Bobcat’s Nicolas Dumont and JCB’s Andrew Boyers tell Plant & Equipment about current and expected levels of demand for backhoe loaders in Africa.

AFRICA NEWS - BACKHOE
40
LOADERS

Small but powerful, versatile and dependable, the backhoe loader has revolutionised the construction industry since it was first introduced more than 75 years ago. Used for everything from minor demolition applications to large-scale infrastructure works, everyone familiar with this sector is sure to know a thing or two about these multifunctional masters.

According to Coherent Market Insights, the value of the global market for backhoe loaders stood at $2.67 billion in 2022 and is expected to register an impressive compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.8 percent during the period 2023-30. This just goes to show how useful and valued these machines are.

Indeed, backhoe loaders have proved particularly popular in Africa – a continent replete with economic development programmes that are driving the widespread construction of highways, rail networks, air and seaports, and more. While the global pandemic temporarily halted many projects, the region’s construction boom has regained significant momentum in recent years. In turn, its backhoe loader market looks set for continued growth after a rocky period.

Encouragingly, Nicolas Dumont, District Sales Manager – Africa at Bobcat, says post-pandemic demand for the manufacturer’s backhoe loaders has been higher than initially anticipated. “Bobcat only entered the backhoe loader market in 2016, so we are a latecomer to this segment,” he tells Plant & Equipment. “Our second-generation product, introduced in 2020, was extremely well received in Africa, and we see sales volumes increasing year over year. All our dealers understand the importance of this product in the compact segment of the market. To be a leader in this space, our dealers have to be successful with the backhoe loader.”

Manitou Group is also enjoying healthy levels of demand for its backhoe loaders in Africa. Morad Benayad, the manufacturer’s Regional Network Manager – North and West Africa, says: “A market average of 1,000 backhoe loaders are sold every year in North and Central Africa. The countries with strong demand or potential are Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya. Over the last 12 months, Manitou’s backhoe loader sales in North and Central Africa have risen by a very impressive 40 percent.

“At a time when staffing shortages represent a major challenge across the African region, backhoe loaders are helping to reduce the need for manual labour as a single machine is capable of performing multiple onsite tasks –especially when deployed in combination with attachments,” Benayad adds. “In turn, these units are serving to drive down costs for contractors.”

Commenting on JCB’s most sought-after models, Andrew Boyers, General Manager – Africa, says: “We offer a wide range of backhoe loaders, from the small 1CX, which is based on a skid-steer platform and has an integrated front shovel and excavator end, all the way through to the 4CX,

AFRICA NEWS - BACKHOE LOADERS www.PlantAndEquipment.com 41

which offers four-wheel steer and equal-size tyres – great for versatility, whether for loading or excavating applications.

“With the largest range of backhoe loaders available in Africa, there is a JCB for every application,” Boyers continues. “The range consists of the 1CX, 2DX, 3DX ECO, 3DX PLUS, 3DX PRO, 3CX Global, 3CX ECO and 4CX. All our models are premium products built and designed by JCB and carry full JCB drive trains. Offering excellent reliability and resale value, these machines are robust and built for the African market.”

According to Dumont, Bobcat’s order book is also looking healthy at present. “Current demand for our backhoe loaders is very strong,” he explains. “In the first six months of 2023, our retail sales increased by over 50 percent. This is the direct

consequence of the full commitment of Bobcat dealers to this product, as well as our dealer network expansion. We expect the demand for our backhoe loaders to grow even more with the September 2023 launch of the brand-new Bobcat B730 M-Series model, produced in our factory in Chennai, India. This segment is extremely price-sensitive, which is why most of the demand has shifted to India-made backhoe loaders.”

In terms of the sectors driving demand, JCB’s Boyers says: “During and after Covid, backhoe loader demand was mainly driven by the agricultural market. However, since coming out of the pandemic, we have seen all other sectors increase. JCB is currently selling backhoe loaders into agriculture, plant hire, construction and mining applications.”

For Manitou, it is the versatility of these units that is driving their popularity in Africa. “Backhoe loaders are used for a wide variety of tasks like construction, small demolitions, light transportation of building materials, powering building equipment, excavation, landscaping, breaking asphalt and paving roads, among others,” says Benayad. “In these conditions, the versatility of the machine is key.

“Since introducing Manitou backhoe loaders to the African market in 2018, we have encountered high demand,” he continues. “Our brand is highly appreciated in this region, thanks to the reputation we have developed for telehandlers, rough-terrain forklifts and aerial work platforms (AWPs). Due to the local expertise of our distribution network and the responsiveness of our operatives, customers in Africa have been extremely receptive to Manitou backhoe loaders.”

Of course, as is the case in any competitive market, manufacturers must go to great lengths to ensure the units

“The B730 R-Series, Bobcat’s second-generation backhoe loader, which launched in 2020, is our top seller,” says Dumont. “It is equipped with a Perkins 1104C engine and a Carraro Synchro Shuttle transmission, both of which are renowned backhoe loader components. The R-Series is also appreciated for its brand DNA, with a look and feel similar to Bobcat’s other products, not to mention its spacious cab and intuitive controls and dashboard.”

Commenting on his team’s best-selling lines, Boyers says: “The JCB 3DX PLUS, which has a powerful 4.4L 68.6kW engine that offers tremendous torque, is one of our most popular models. The 3DX PRO, meanwhile, features EASYSHIFT, JCB’s new 4-speed transmission, which delivers extra power while loading by allowing operators to kick down to first gear with the push of a button. The 3DX ECO is also sought-after, thanks to its high-performing 4.8L 56kW engine.

“JCB backhoe loaders are in high demand in Africa due to their durability, reliability, cost of ownership and resale value,” he adds. “We also offer a range of attachments to help get the job done as efficiently as possible.”

So, what does the future hold for backhoe loader manufacturers supplying units to African markets? Buoyed by his company’s recent performance, Manitou’s Benayad says: “We expect an increase in demand in this region during the next 12 months.”

JCB’s Boyers seems equally optimistic, commenting: “I believe the backhoe loader market will grow significantly over the

next couple of years, especially in developing countries where there is a need for infrastructure and development. The backhoe loader is a great tool for entrepreneurs to start their own businesses as either owner-operators or fleet owners.”

While Bobcat’s Dumont points out there is competition from other machinery segments, he appears confident in the backhoe loader’s ability to maintain its popularity among Africa’s fleet managers. “The preference among some customers is beginning to shift towards mini-excavators,” he concludes. “However, I believe this trend will be balanced out by increased demand for new backhoe loaders. Ultimately, I’m confident that these machines will enjoy a bright future in the region for years to come.”.

CATERPILLAR CELEBRATES PRODUCTION OF THE 50,000TH CAT WHEEL EXCAVATOR

Europe and South Korea were among the first adopters of this new solution. However, the combination of speed, power, versatility and ability to operate a wide range of hydraulic tools has the Cat Wheel Excavator line growing in popularity in China, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, North America and other world markets. Starting with only four models, today’s expanded Cat wheel excavator line includes eight models – Cat M314 to M322 – for markets with higher emissions regulations, one model – M315 GC – for China, three models – M315 to M320D2 –for those adhering to lower emissions standards, the M323F railroad-specific model, and four materials handlers from the MH3022 to MH3040.

In 1984, Caterpillar, Eder and Zeppelin Baumaschinen, the Cat dealer in Germany, introduced a new wheeled excavator line, offering four models under the Cat Eder brand. Eight years later, the line became a 100% Cat product with a designated wheel excavator team. Twenty-eight years later, in 2012, Caterpillar celebrated production of its 25,000th wheel excavator. This year, Caterpillar announces production of its 50,000th wheel excavator, a Cat M318 Next Gen model, adding another 25,000 units to the total in just 11 years.
