UD TRUCKS, BRIDGESTONE AND AL MASAOOD JOIN FORCES TO HELP EDUCATE TRUCK DRIVERS ABOUT KEEPING SAFE AGAINST COVID-19 UD Trucks, Bridgestone and Al Masaood Group have joined forces for a brand new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) campaign aimed at educating truck drivers about the importance of health and hygiene practices in the battle against the spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

‘Serving our Heroes’ is a CSR initiative that sought to provide local truck drivers with the essential safety tools needed to avoid any virus propagation. As part of the campaign, the partnering organisations, in cooperation with Abu Dhabi Ports, distributed safety kits to over 900 truck drivers across various truck rest areas in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, including Khalifa Port.

The recently launched campaign looked towards paying tribute to the important role that truck drivers play in our lives-devoting long hours to ensure the delivery of goods and commodities across the country even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. The distributed packages contained essential items such as N95 masks, gloves, hand sanitizers and wet wipes to protect truck drivers during these times. In addition, the packages included a specially designed A5 leaflet bearing safety information written in Arabic, English, Hindi and Urdu.

FORD RANGER ACHIEVES MORE THAN 1,250KM ON A SINGLE TANK OF DIESEL “At first, we thought 1,000km would be a very ambitious target,” said Jaffar, “But as the day wore on, and the Ranger indicated that we could easily exceed that, it became apparent that we were in for far more time behind the wheel than we anticipated.”

Ford demonstrated just how efficient the truck can be when it handed the Ranger to two Dubai-based content creators and asked them to see how far they could get on a single tank of fuel, and to record a video log of their efforts. Armed with a few eco-driving tips and a second Ranger XLS 2.2-litre turbodiesel along for support, Ahmed Jaffar and Mohamed Sirelkhatim embarked on their challenge at the height of the Middle East summer. They topped the Ranger’s 80-litre tank to the brim and set their sights on driving as far as they could.

In fact, having covered 864km in the first day of driving and still with a quarter tank of diesel left, the pair were very confident of breaking their initial 1,000km target as they set out on the second day. Little did they know that the remaining fuel would actually push them to add another 388km to their challenge, for a total distance of an incredible 1252km.

“When we started out, we didn’t really know what we were in for. We thought we might make 500km, maybe a little further – but to not only break that 1,000km mark but smash it, was really something,” said Jaffar. “It’s a test I’ll remember for a long time to come.”.

HEAVY DUTY TRUCK ORDER

OCEAN READYMIX & PRECAST ORDERS FIVE RENAULT TRUCKS UAE-based concrete supplier, Ocean Readymix & Precast has become the first company in the Gulf to take delivery of Renault Trucks’ new 8x4 Chassis model with a transit mixer capacity of 14 cubic metres. The new vehicles are being provided by Renault Trucks’ UAE-based importer Al Masaood, one of the largest integrated industrial, commercial and service organisations in the Middle East.

In total, Ocean Readymix & Precast has received five units of Renault Trucks’ K440 P8x4 model, which will be used by the company to service its projects and customers in its home city of Al Ain. With a Gross Vehicle Weight of 50 tons, the 8x4 Chassis version is the ideal model to meet the company’s specific operational requirements. At the same time, the availability of a preventive maintenance service contract and reliable aftersales support provided added appeal.

The new K range models are equipped with an Optidriver manual gearbox with automated gearshifting, as well as Renault Trucks’ unique Optibrake exhaust braking system which, with a power rating of 300kW, promotes driver safety.

Additional selling points include hill-start aid, wheel anti-slip regulation (ASR), anti-lock braking system (ABS), emergency braking assist (AFU) and an electronic parking brake (EPB).

Renault Trucks’ K range of heavy construction trucks is designed to tackle the Middle East’s toughest terrain, while at the same time minimising fuel consumption and maximising profitability. The K range of heavy construction trucks also features the latest cutting-edge equipment and technology; these robust, heavy-duty trucks are equipped with 11L and 13L engines and All Wheel Drive (AWD) capabilities.

HINO LAUNCHES NEW LDT MODEL IN MIDDLE EAST Hino Motors, Ltd., the commercial vehicle arm of Toyota Group, has introduced the latest version of its Hino 300 Series Light Duty Truck (LDT) range to the Middle East. The versatile vehicle offers a new and improved transmission system and upgraded suspension, as well as enhanced safety features and a number of cabin refinements.

Renowned as a flexible and reliable vehicle, the Hino 300 series offers an exceptional transportation solution across a wide range of applications. The new model includes an improved AISIN transmission system with a wider gear ratio, which creates more power by moving the vehicle forward at a lower RPM while boosting fuel efficiency. In addition, the lower RPMs reduce the engine load, resulting in increased vehicle up-time.

The adoption of a tapered leaf-spring suspension system increases drive comfort by providing more effective shock absorbance. The upgraded suspension reduces rear-body vibration and makes maintenance easier due to the reduced number of leaves. This is complemented by the addition of pre-drilled grid holes in the chassis frame, which allow customers to use the same vehicle for multiple applications and reduces the lead time for body fabrication. The grid holes have been evenly spaced along the rails, enabling the use of common fixing brackets and enhancing compatibility with a range of superstructures to greatly enhance the flexibility for customization work.

The cabin interior provides a range of features for utility and comfort in both the wide and narrow cab variants, including ample storage space, plenty of legroom, and a customizable central console. All aspects of the cabin design contribute to a more comfortable driving experience, even when operating in the high-temperature conditions associated with the Middle East region.

The Hino 300 series is completely manufactured in Japan at Hino’s Hamura Plant and features the Hino red engine N04C, which is available in two variants capable of generating 139 PS and 154 PS (JIS Gross) depending on the Gross Vehicle Weight. The model available in the Middle East is Euro 3 compliant, while the model sold in the UAE market meets Euro 4 emission standards, making it both powerful and environmentally friendly. Optional extras include the Hino ES (Easy Start) system that provides smooth hill start assistance, and a larger 150 L fuel tank for increased range and operating hours.

The new Hino 300 Series includes cutting-edge features such as an Emergency Guard Impact Safety (EGIS) cab, SRS airbags for drivers and passengers, a collapsible steering column, Antilock Brake System (ABS), a dual-circuit hydraulic service brake, and exhaust brake. The vehicle also incorporates the upgraded SAE J1939 CAN-Protocol, which provides a common and exclusive protocol language that is compatible with a variety of telematics systems across commercial vehicle manufacturers. This enables swift troubleshooting and helps to implement predictive maintenance for increased vehicle up-time.

NEW DATES FOR MATERIALS HANDLING SAUDI ARABIA The 3rd edition of the biennial trade fair was originally scheduled to run in November 2020, but will now take place from November 22 to 24, 2022 at the Jeddah Centre for Forums and Events. The move comes as Saudi Arabia continues to implement appropriate health and safety measures within its borders to contain the spread of the global COVID-19 pandemic.

Materials Handling Saudi Arabia is organised by Saudibased ACE Group under licence by Dubai-headquartered Messe Frankfurt Middle East, which organises Materials Handling Middle East, the region’s flagship warehousing and intra-logistics trade fair.

“This was a difficult decision, but ultimately the correct one under the current circumstances, and we know Materials Handling Saudi Arabia will be hugely successful when it returns in 2022,” commented Nish Liyanage, Materials Handling Saudi Arabia’s Event Director.

“For now, we understand the importance of knowledge sharing and uncovering global supply chain trends, particularly during these unprecedented times. To that end, we launched our Materials Handling webinar series which has so far proven to be very popular.”

Saudi Arabia’s materials handling, logistics, and warehousing market was estimated to be worth more than $16bn in 2019, comprising 34 percent of the Middle East market, according to analysts 6WResearch.

Quick to adapt to the changing buying and selling landscape brought on by the global COVID-19 pandemic, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers have made hay while the sun shone virtually. Plant & Equipment chats with Eduard Faig, Regional Sales Manager Middle East, Africa & Asia Subcontinent, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers about acclimating for success.

A

s much as we’d like to disagree, there are definitely advantages brought on by this global pandemic. The biggest one being the explosion of online business for all and sundry. Companies that were already doing a lot of business online have just been ahead of the race. Ritchie Bros Auctioneers was one such company ahead of the others as they pivoted entirely to online auctions.

Eduard Faig, Regional Sales Manager Middle East, Africa & Asia Subcontinent, Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, says: “Even before this virus hit, we already sold the majority of the items online. With this pandemic, we have adapted our processes to the situation, and through our auctions, we have been able to help our customers buy and sell equipment in these challenging times.” The online-only auctions are performing well, with Ritchie Bros. seeing record attendance of bidders and with strong selling prices.

Change is the only constant The auctioneers have adapted their business on multiple levels. “First and foremost, the safety of our staff and customers has been a priority. All our auction sites and offices comply with the COVID-19 safety measures,” says Faig. While their in-person participation at all their local auctions has historically been strong, the recently held online auction in Dubai (on June 29-30, 2020), saw a 21 per cent increase in online registrants. The online auction system used on their website (called ‘Timed Auctions’) was developed almost 10 years ago for selling attachments and smaller items, proved to be very effective for other types of assets as well.

bids open for several days - a key difference to the live auctions. “It’s very easy to place bids and bidders have more time to get their bids in. The system notifies bidders when they’re outbid or are in the lead,” adds Faig. However, bidders can still come to the auction site to inspect items of interest before they place bids.

Ritchie Bros. have made all necessary adjustments to their site with regards to health and safety. For example, before the online auction, the site was open for inspection from June 24. No booking was required; however, a limited number of people were allowed on to the site at the same time. But buyers have also been open to this change as historically they have shown a preference to visiting the auction site personally to participate, as most of them are based in the UAE and wider Gulf region. “After the online auction, we have spoken with a lot of our customers, and they enjoyed the experience. We saw a big increase in bidder registrations, and selling prices were strong across the board,” he says.

And indeed, this online auction dealt with multi-million US dollar numbers, featuring 1,080+ heavy equipment items sold on behalf of 170 sellers. Over a thousand bidders from 73 countries, of which 235 became successful buyers. Top buyer countries were the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and the US.

Ritchie Bros., meanwhile, recently extended the lease contract of their brick and mortar Dubai site after being there for 20 years. Faig says: “It was time to renovate some of the auction site premises, including the building and the yard, to provide a better experience for our customers.”

A

s businesses contend with the challenges of remote working, online training and workshops have allowed Genie to stay connected with its dealers and large rental fleet customers, helping them diagnose and fix equipment problems. “During this period we have kept in close contact with our customers through phones, conferences, emails – there was not really any request that we could not attend to, either directly or through our dealer network,” says Sharbel Kordahi, Managing Director, Terex Equipment Middle East (TEME), and Genie Sales Director for Middle East, South Africa, Russia and CIS, Terex AWP. He believes business will gradually return to normal but that from a salesman perspective the practice of being on a plane day in day out or driving out to customers to have a coffee while discussing business, will be less frequent. “This will come back to some extent, but overall more will be done remotely, and this is something that customers understand.”

While the lockdown and movement restrictions paused many projects, work picked up again in May and June. Much of this was driven by maintenance projects, such as in oil & gas, while the reopening of malls and other buildings saw an uptick in demand for facilities management. “There have also

been a lot of requests coming from ports because they have been very active with the large quantities of goods that have been imported, so they have additional maintenance work,” notes Kordahi.

Overall, utilisation rates among Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP) rental companies are relatively good – in the UAE, a market seen as saturated, it stands at around 7080% – but the biggest problem facing the rental companies is delays in payments. This has been a long-standing problem in most GCC markets, but has been amplified by the pandemic, with rental companies seeing payment cycles extended out even further.

“A lot of rental companies are in survival mode at the moment, mainly due also to the fact that a lot of projects have gone on hold or have slowed down significantly, and that resulted also in payments coming even slower,” says Kordahi.

Nevertheless, even if rental companies are not spending heavily on Capex, Genie is still focused on delivering value to them, including training service teams, fixing machines in the yards and training their sales organisations, he says. “It’s about applications – what benefits do the machines that they have bought from us have over other machines, what features

rental companies can see that Genie is not only there when they have large Capex to spend, but we are here for the long run and we are ready to support them whether it is good times or bad times.”

and benefits can the sales team go and up-sell to their customers? This has been the area of focus.”

Speed of delivery can be a differentiator, as rental companies still come across opportunities where they need machines quickly in order to be able to win a contract, says Kordahi.

Last November, Genie opened a new distribution facility in the Jebel Ali Free Zone, which has massively decreased lead times for new equipment delivery in the UAE and the region. That’s important both for end user customers – who typically want a machine to be delivered as quickly as possible – and for rental companies, in case they need to source a particular machine to win a job.

In one example, Genie was recently able to deliver a GS4655 16-metre electric scissor lift to a rental company at short notice, for an indoor job. The alternative was to use a large boom, but the electric scissor lift has greater basket capacity, allowing more workers at height. “None of the major competitors have a 16m electric drive scissor lift with the capacity in the basket that we have,” says Kordahi. Being able to deliver the new machine within 24 hours gave the rental company an edge; it could offer a solution with a specialist piece of equipment, and thus avoid competing on price. “The

In the UAE, it is looking to appoint a major distributor with a strong sales and service network and strong financial backing, to invest in the product line and ensure fast delivery of new machines, says Kordahi.

Finance is also an important part of the purchase process.

Terex Middle East has a full-time Financial Services Manager working out of Dubai, responsible for linking customers to leasing companies and to banks in order to provide different financing solutions to fleet customers. This typically comes in the form of export finance offered by international banks, often in the country where the equipment is manufactured.

“We act as a bridge between the financing bank, the insurer and the customer,” says Kordahi.

Increased electrification and safety Kordahi has been with Terex for ten years, and in that time has seen a solid shift towards electric and hybrid machines, which now make up around 30% of total sales, as customers see greater value in electric machines and Genie and other OEMs expand their electric drive machine offering. Key advantages of electric drive machines include strength, the absence of hydraulic leaks, and increasing battery longevity.

“Traditionally the GCC has always been a big boom market with diesel-driven machines, but now we are seeing quite a strong shift toward electric and hybrid machines, and also more toward smaller equipment,” he says.

Safety is of course an important part of the MEWP industry.

Kordahi separates this between machine safety – including proper maintenance and safety bulletins – and operator training and on-site practices. He says that rental companies typically practise machine safety to a high standard, given their liabilities, but operator practices are less standardised, given that they are normally employees of the contractors.

“From an operator perspective, sometimes we might find that is a little bit of slackness on safety, where the operators are not well trained or not adhering to their PPE requirements.”

Nevertheless, there is increased scrutiny from municipal authorities, particularly in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, which now require IPAF-certified operators. “This is excellent because at least you know that any operator has got the minimum requirement training to operate a MEWP.” Additional safety features include secondary guarding on booms, with discussion of secondary guarding on scissor lifts, though Kordahi believes the emphasis needs to be on the operators.

“You cannot bulletproof these machines against an accident if the operator is not well-trained and is not aware of his environment, and does not take care of himself and the people with him in the machine.”

In recent years, Terex Corporation has divested a number of business units, specifically Demag overhead cranes in 2017 and all-terrain cranes in 2019. That makes Genie’s MEWP division more significant in terms of overall revenue within the organisation and therefore an even higher priority when it comes to investing in product development and other aspects of the business, explains Kordahi.

“All the business [units] that we had that were either not contributing to our bottom line or needed big investments in order to grow, we saw a better fit with other companies to grow these businesses,” he explains. “We have divested from these businesses, and we have the core businesses that will

Going forward, Genie’s focus is on expanding knowledge of its product lines via dynamic and interactive online training, both among customers and within its own sales organisation.

“It becomes very interesting for the Genie sales teams, because then they can see where to up-sell against the competition and how our products are differentiated. Areas like extra-capacity big booms, electric drive for the smaller and mid-sized booms and our new range of scissor lifts will be the main areas of focus, though we will continue also to push the full product line,” Kordahi concludes..

Genie has seen increased demand for electric and hybrid machines, and smaller MEWPs, as the GCC moves away from being exclusively a big boom market.

U

ndoubtedly among the most common pieces of equipment on any jobsite in the Middle East and the wider region, backhoe loaders are designed to be able to do almost everything. On top of that, they can easily traverse a large site. As a country develops, the size of its construction machinery typically shrinks – one reason mini-excavators are so popular in Europe – but in the GCC, large and spread out jobsites make the backhoe a perfect machine for a wide variety of jobs.

“We have a saying that the backhoe loader is a machine that can do it all. It digs, loads, grades, cleans, dozes and lifts,” explains Ahmed Shouman, GM of JCB Middle East. With the addition of various attachments, such as street sweepers, soil compactors, millers and breakers, the machine becomes even more versatile, he adds.

The most popular attachments are the breakers and 6-in-1 hydraulic buckets, while an additional option is to use the machine to power hand-held tools such as power washers or jigsaws, rather than have to use a compressor.

There’s no doubt that JCB is the best-recognised BHL brand – globally its market share is around 55-60%, says Shouman. The 3CX and 4CX are its bestsellers in the GCC. When designing and manufacturing its backhoe loaders, the goal was to deliver leading performance and the lowest cost of ownership, he explains. Key specifications and options include auxiliary third pump or variable displacement pumps, fixed or extending dippers, manual or seat-mounted controls, auto manual shift or power shift, and twowheel or four-wheel drive.

“Every option offered has its value to the customer and each of these options brings a better return on investment from the machine. When we design the machines we have in mind the customer and his return on investment,” he says.

Strong after-sales support is also a core part of the offering. Shouman believes that every second machine is sold on the basis of the after-market offering. “This is displayed by the quality and the size of the dealer network we have in the GCC and the Middle East. We are represented in every country by a well-established local partner who shares our values.”

JCB’s LiveLink has been fitted as standard since 2012 (and can be retrofitted on older machines), and the telematics tool was additionally handy while there were restrictions on movement due to the pandemic, for machines on critical sites that remained operational.

Overall, the telematics system allows JCB to offer a higher level of after-sales support to customers through the dealer network, with technicians monitoring machines and providing instant feedback to customers via the telematics platform if there are any issues.

“What we excel in is the quick response and the proactive approach with our existing customers,” says Shouman. JCB has also introduced a mobile app that operators can use to complete their daily checks and submit daily reports to supervisors and fleet managers. “The aim is to reduce the amount of administrative paperwork required and speed up the process in case there is a quick response required to prevent machine failures.”

In the coming months, JCB is looking to update the standard controls offered on its Middle East backhoe loaders, a measure that Shouman believes will improve operator productivity and efficiency on both the loader and the backhoe. While business was down sharply in March and April, and uncertainty and project delays mean customers are cautious about buying

new machines, there has been a slight recovery in demand for machines over the past two months, he adds.

Efficiency focus Caterpillar’s two most popular backhoe loaders in the GCC are the newly introduced 428 and 426F2 models, says Mamoun Mutair, Building Construction – Product Manager at Mohamed Abdulrahman Al-Bahar. The machines feature a new hydraulic quick coupler to make it easier to change work tools. “The new powered coupler engages tools hydraulically, so you can switch tools from the comfort and safety of the seat,” explains Mutair.

Drive Control allows the operator to switch between twowheel drive (2WD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) using the three-position drive selector. A third mode, 2WD with allwheel braking, activates AWD when braking and returns to 2WD when the brake pedal is released, ensuring positive braking effort in hazardous driving conditions and reducing tire wear. A lock-up torque converter provides a 16% increase in fuel efficiency and 11% higher average speed, making it an invaluable addition for those travelling between sites.

Other key product features include a dry-type axial air cleaner with an integral pre-cleaner and automatic integrated dust ejection system to extend the life of the air filter when working in dusty conditions, reducing service time and costs, and a large 160-litre fuel tank with a composite material that prevents rust from forming in the tank, protecting fuel injection components.

Additionally, the 428 is protected by an undercoat of electro-deposited (E-Coat) primer, sealing each metallic component from damage and corrosion, for optimum resale value.

ProductLink comes as standard on the Caterpillar backhoes, with features such as service hours and location to allow the owner to access machine data to increase productivity while reducing costs. “ProductLink, along with VisionLink, makes equipment management possible. Operators can view fleet information online with VisionLink and use it to make informed decisions that boost productivity, lower costs, simplify maintenance and improve safety on your jobsite,” says Mutair.

Customer driven Best known for its skid-steer and compact-track loaders, Bobcat launched a range of backhoe loaders four years ago after numerous customer requests, says Gaby Rhayem, Regional Director Middle East and Africa for Doosan Bobcat EMEA. The BHLs are all powered by a highly efficient diesel engine with 74.5kW (100HP) power output at 2,200RPM and maximum torque of 408Nm at 1,350RPM. “[The engine] provides more than enough muscle for the most demanding applications while delivering low operating costs due to low fuel and oil consumption,” notes Rhayem.

The firm is currently streamlining the range from four models to two and coming up with a new model in the near future, says Rhayem, “offering several machine options to meet all our customers’ needs”. It is also working hard to increase commonality between the BHLs and other products by ensuring they share the same Bobcat DNA, and developing a shared parts platform for Bobcat customers that will cover all products and enhance after-market support. “This will bring a number of new or significantly upgraded products in the future

that will help to strengthen our position not only in backhoe loaders, but across all markets.”

Overall, the Bobcat loaders are versatile and powerful; combined with a wide range of Bobcat optional equipment, they can be readily configured to carry out a wide range of applications with ease, such as digging, trenching, breaking and material handling, says Rhayem.

“Similarly for loader applications, they offer premium performance with powerful breakout forces, strong full lift capacities, and enhanced load over height and reach to meet the most demanding material handling jobs. There is a choice of general purpose or 6-in-1 buckets or other optional equipment to enhance both versatility and productivity.”.

A Canadian investment firm is moving ahead with plans for the establishment of a Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (LSFO) refinery in the Sultanate to cater to the growing needs of ships transitioning to low-emission fuels for maritime transportation. Ottawa-based Canada Business Holdings Inc (CBH), described as a specialist in the delivery of large projects based on the Private-Private-Partnership (PPP) model, announced earlier this week that it will proceed with the phased development of a 300,000 barrels per day (bpd)

capacity refinery with an investment of around $1.5bn. It did not specify the exact location of the project, but noted that the plant is proposed to come up within an industrial free zone in the Sultanate overlooking the Arabian Sea. SAVE MONEY AND TIME Mining and quarrying equipment specialist Astec Industries Inc, has completed a significant export order through the regional office in Johannesburg for a new aggregate crushing plant in Harare, Zimbabwe. With a load moment matching a 1,200t crawler crane or a large floating sheerleg, the crane enables loads up to 600t to be lifted from the quay to the non-geared cargo vessels.

This lifting capacity is ideal for loading and offloading heavy items such as columns, vessels, reels, engines and many other project cargoes.

The crane was installed at the Ladol quayside in May 2020 and is the biggest installed shore crane of its kind in the

AMMANN RECEIVES ORDER FOR CONCRETE MIXING PLANT IN KENYA Nairobi-based Jilk recently purchased an Ammann CBT 60 SL Elba concrete mixing plant. The CBT 60 plant is known to be compact allowing the plant to easily relocate between large projects. With a production output of 60 m3 per hour, the concrete mixing plant features a steel frame for the foundation, a 60-tonne cement silo with a transportable design and additive storage tank with a scale and controls that enable effortless supplementation.

“Normally in Kenya, 60 cubic metres is considered a larger capacity, and the most common hourly output is 30 to 45 cubic metres,” said Sammy Maina, Director of Jilk. “The design also reduces the amount of land needed to install the plant. BUILDING THE WORLD’S BIGGEST BIKE JUMPS

I

n South Africa, a Bobcat B730 backhoe loader and E55 mini-excavator have proved themselves to be the machines of choice for constructing some of the best mountain bike (MTB) trails ever seen in the country and anywhere around the globe. Not too long ago, cycling was a niche sport, and the industry comprised a handful of retailers selling a narrow range of bike brands and specialist gear. Today, it is the largest participation sport in South Africa.

Working on land forming part of the Vuurberg Wine Farm in Stellenbosch, the Bobcat B730 and E55 have been used under the direction of professional trail builders to construct trails with jumps of a magnitude that have never been seen before, providing an unequalled challenge to riders from all over the world.

Crucial for infrastructure and other construction projects, motor graders combine precision finishing and the ability to move and mix large amounts of material – when driven by the right operator, though machine control is also making advances.

The motor grader is one of the most versatile earth-moving machines in use today. Its weight, horsepower, wide range of attachments and manoeuvrability allow it to be used in a diverse set of applications,” says Yaroslav Chechik, Product Application Specialist at Caterpillar. Outside of construction, in a quarry-type environment, proper use of a motor grader for road maintenance affects the productivity of the whole site, he adds.

But getting the most from a grader requires top-notch operators. Across the entire range of earth-moving machines, motor graders are among the most difficult to drive, especially for the final cut. Proper frame articulation and wheel lean, correct setting of the linkbar (hole selection), and mouldboard positioning are some of the skills that allow a trained operator to achieve the best productivity.

The correct selection of tools – cutting edge, tyres and so forth – for job-site conditions is also critical. “The combination of both, a trained operator and the right selection of tools together with a proper machine maintenance programme, allows the machine to be kept in good condition, improving uptime and therefore productivity,” Chechik says.

That’s why skilled motor grader operators can command high incomes – in South Africa, a final-level operator who can grade down to 1cm accuracy can earn as much as 30,000 rand ($1,784) a month, notes Zane Barnard, a product specialist at Case Construction Equipment. The value they bring to a business means contractors want to hold on to their highly experienced operators.

However, the development of automation technologies is radically improving the effective abilities of less skilled operators. On John Deere graders, automated cross-slope comes as a standard, says Grant Van Tine, Solutions Marketing Manager, John Deere.

“Automated cross-slope simplifies holding a consistent slope by reducing operation to a single lever. Cross-slope not only helps new operators get up to speed quickly, but also helps veteran operators become more proficient.”

Other automation features on John Deere graders include auto-articulation, combining front steering and rear articulation; blade flip, which allows the operator to automatically rotate the blade to a set position without holding the control at the end of a pass; and machine presets, which allow the operator to activate multiple preset functions by pressing a single button.

When it comes to grade control the John Deere graders are designed with an open architecture, meaning the customer can choose their preferred system, says Van Tine. Case CE also has open architecture.

Generally speaking, machine control can allow a moderately skilled grader operator to operate a machine with the precision of a final-level operator, says Barnard, resulting in a dramatic jump in productivity.

Caterpillar offers various grade control solutions from the factory, from the basic Grade Control Ready option for Cat

K series motor graders up to 2D Grade Control Cross Slope and 3D Mastless GPS system for machines equipped with the joystick, says Chechik. In addition, Cat Cross Slope automates one side of the mouldboard to follow the other, which is controlled by the operator and automatically maintains the selected cross slope percentage level. “This system saves up to 40% in material for the same length of road, compared to manual control. This translates into savings in material, machine wear and fuel consumption,” he says.

At the most basic level, the main advantage of grade control is that fewer machine passes are needed to complete a job.

This means greater productivity and lower fuel and running costs. There are also safety advantages, such as fewer workers on-site, since it eliminates the need for grade checkers; and the resale value of a machine with integrated grade control is higher, says Chechik.

Nevertheless, sophisticated machine control technology is not widely used in sub-Saharan Africa, partly since the degree of accuracy required differs significantly between sites. For benchmark projects such as an airport runway, stadium surface or infrastructure such as rail, contractors look for the highest levels of accuracy and may want to use machine control, while for other projects the requirements are less stringent.

However, the technology pays for itself over time, says Van Tine. “Whether it’s using cross-slope or a 3D fully automated system, contractors will see a return on the investment as this technology improves productivity and efficiency by enabling operators to get to grade faster with greater accuracy.”

Motor graders are widely used for construction projects.

Caterpillar recently launched a 3D mastless system. “Operators were asking for improved visibility, and job-site managers for more safety features; and with no GPS mast, there is no damage risk. In addition, the integrated design is less conspicuous on job-sites,” says Chechik. Currently, mastless

All in the hand The motor grader control set-up is an important aspect of the operator experience. John Deere offers three types of control styles – traditional mechanical ‘antler rack’ controls, armrest mounted fingertip controls and dual joystick controls – while each style include a steering wheel. “In sub-Saharan Africa, there is still a strong preference for the traditional mechanical antler rack controls, due to their simplicity and operators’ familiarity with this style from experience on previous machines,” says Van Tine. “However, the beauty of fingertip controls is they are arranged in the industrystandard pattern on each side of the steering wheel, so adapting from traditional controls to fingertip controls is intuitive for operators.”

Case CE offers piano control levers on its three models – the 845B, 865B and 885B – the configuration which operators in Africa and the Middle East are most familiar with, notes Barnard. “The machine is quite nicely set up. We’ve got a large and comfortable cab that gives the operator great visibility on to the mouldboard and the wider site so he can get his accuracy right.”

Key features of the Case CE B-series graders include a heavyduty boxed frame design for the A-frame drawbar, supporting the circle with a wide stance, increasing the life of the circle and the drawbar components; externally driven circle teeth that are insensitive to shocks, are easier to clean and provide a larger contact area to avoid component wear and for greater leverage when turning the blade under load; and a multiradius blade to allow more efficient and continuous cutting, mixing and rolling. “We’ve given the machine quite a bit of horsepower that allows us now to get the Newton metres up and get the machine rolling nicely,” says Barnard.

Automation and machine control can result in improved productivity.

John Deere motor graders are high horsepower, and its 622, 672, 772 and 872 models feature six-wheel drive, enabling operators to return to the job sooner after inclement weather and to work through poor ground conditions where a traditional tandem drive grader may suffice, says Van Tine.

“Additionally, six-wheel drive is excellent for slope work and ditches, and in some cases can replace the need for a second machine like a crawler dozer because of the grader’s ability to handle the slopes. Automatic differential lock delivers additional tractive effort by engaging when travelling straight.”

Overall, the main utilisation factors in the African markets are ease of operation and repair, as well as high performance and the capability to move big loads of material, making the Cat 140K and Cat 140 GC popular machines within its range, says Chechik. “If the requirement is the highest productivity with a machine used daily and for long hours, Cat performance models that offer the highest performance in class are the best solution. On the other hand, if a customer’s prime consideration is lower owning costs, then our standard offering such as the 140 GC would meet that requirement.”.

The American company KE International has been awarded the contract to build this futuristic and ecological city, which will be located near Mbodième, a small coastal village in the west of Senegal. This locality will see the growth of a town whose development will revolve around a crypto-currency called Akoin that will be launched this year. The construction of the new Akon City will require an investment of $6bn. The city, which is intended to be environmentally friendly, will be built on an area of 2,000 hectares. Renault Trucks is stepping up its transition to a circular economy and is developing a network with Indra for recycling and reusing truck parts. The two partners are carrying out a one-year preliminary study, the conclusions of which will be delivered by autumn 2020.

Renault Trucks President Bruno Blin and LoĂŻc BeyRozet, the Executive Director of Indra Automobile Recycling, signed a letter of intent setting out the terms of collaboration between the truck manufacturer and the automotive recycling specialist for the creation of a network for the recycling, reuse and recovery of truck parts. The two partners are completing a one-year study, conducted with financial support from the ADEME and the assistance of CIDER Engineering, an Indra partner specialised in dismantling heavy equipment.

The study aims to identify the key success factors and criteria needed to establish this type of commerciallyoriented network. A detailed analysis of the market, distribution schemes and methods for dismantling trucks will enable the manufacturer and the vehicle recycling specialist to draw up positive conclusions, which will then be submitted to the ADEME in October 2020.

From July 2020, Renault Trucks and Indra Automobile Recycling will start recycling trucks on a larger scale.

After cleaning and referencing, the parts will be offered to customers through the Renault Trucks repairer and dealer network. The remaining material from dismantling will be recycled. Between now and the end of the year, around a hundred trucks will be dismantled at Indra Automobile Recycling centres and at Renault Trucks dealerships and branches, then recycled..

A fully automated truck is to be developed and tested in actual logistics operations at the DUSS Terminal in Ulm. The project partners are MAN Truck & Bus SE, Deutsche Bahn AG, Götting KG and the Hochschule Fresenius University of Applied Sciences.

The fully automated truck is to be used at the Ulm Dornstadt site. It will move automatically within the DB Intermodal Services container depot and the DUSS terminal. A MAN ‘safety driver’ will always be on board during tests.

FIRST GERMAN E-ROAD TRIAL NOW FULLY OPERATIONAL Since early July, the first German electric road test track near Frankfurt with catenary overhead lines is fully operational with five Scania R 450 hybrid trucks equipped with pantographs. The last of the five trucks was recently delivered to the German building materials supplier company Knauf.

“This pilot project fits well with our commitment to use all resources responsibly,” says Knauf Group Manager Christoph Dorn. “We hope that this will provide insights that can help us make our logistics processes even more sustainable, especially in metropolitan areas.”

The other four catenary trucks are being operated by Schanz, Meyer Logistics, Contargo and Merck. With all five trucks now in daily traffic along the five-kilometre electrified segment on the A5 motorway, data will be collected for several studies to examine the benefits of e-roads.

“If the feedback is positive, and if about one-third of the German motorway network is equipped with electrified catenary lines, in future approximately 80 percent of the heavy trucks registered in Germany will be able to operate in an electric mode using this technology. That will make a really significant contribution to reducing carbon emission,” explains Kerstgens.

“A five-kilometre test track in both directions on the motorway may seem very short but the aim is to test the technology,” says Heinrich Kerstgens, Co-Managing Director of Contargo, which in June received the third Scania hybrid truck for the pilot project.

The A5 motorway segment in Hessen is one of three tests with catenary lines being conducted in Germany. The second road segment was opened in Schleswig-Holstein (A1) at the end of 2019 and the final trial will start at the end of 2020 in BadenWürttemberg (B462)..

NEW RANGE

AUGER TORQUE LAUNCHES THE VM SERIES Auger Torque, the leading manufacturer and global provider of earthmoving attachments, has announced the addition of the VM1000 & VM1500 Variable Mulchers to their product portfolio. The variable mulcher (VM) range provides the user with the versatility of being mounted on both a skid steer loader and excavator, whilst also providing a drum drop change feature whilst onsite. The drum drop option gives the user the choice of changing swiftly between fixed tungsten tooth and swinging hammer drum, bringing with it the capability of undertaking numerous applications on site with the one piece of equipment.

Suitable for mounting on both excavators and skid steer loaders, the VM provides a working width of up to 1.5m. Both the VM1000 & VM1500 have the unique feature of being able to change the drum on-site, adapting quickly between parent machines for maximum versatility & flexibility on the job, without costly downtime. The ability to attach a skid steer frame and excavator hitch at the same time, along with a removable pressure gauge & push bar allows for easy adaptation between parent machines when out on site. The fixed tungsten teeth drum gives a robust blunt cutting edge for grinding through thick timber up to 250mm diameter, hedges and branches.

Unique to Auger Torque’s VM Mulcher series and an industry first, is the ability to drop and change the drum out on site allowing for quick change over when there are various types of vegetation to clear, or simply if the operator is not sure what they will be met with out on site. Furthermore, it is possible to have the mulcher set up for skid steer loaders and excavators simultaneously and clear dense low-level bushes with a skid steer, then mulch whole trees from top to ground level with an excavator..

‫من المقرر أن تبدأ أعمال البناء في سد كورو‪-‬سوين متعدد األغراض‬ ‫المقترح على نهر نياندو‪ ،‬في المنطقة الغربية من كينيا‪ ،‬في سبتمبر‬ ‫‪ .2020‬وقد منحت الهيئة الوطنية إلدارة البيئة (‪ )NEMA‬موافقة مؤقتة‬ ‫حاليا و ازرة الحصاد الوطني للمياه وهيئة التخزين‬ ‫على المشروع‪ ،‬وتعمل ً‬ ‫(‪ )NWHSA‬مع اللجنة الوطنية لألراضي لضمان تعويض األشخاص‬ ‫المتضررين من المشروع عن فقدان أراضيهم‪ .‬يغطي المشروع ما يقرب من‬ ‫‪ 2500‬فدان من األرض‪ ،‬أي ما يعادل إجمالي ‪ 360‬قطعة أرض منها‬ ‫‪ 230‬قطعة في مقاطعة كيسومو و‪ 130‬في مقاطعة كيريشو‪.‬‬

‫وهو أحد مشاريع رؤية المملكة ‪ 2030‬ويأتي ضمن مبادرة المدن اإلنسانية‬ ‫بهدف المساهمة في تحسين نوعية الحياة في محافظة جدة ورفع نصيب‬ ‫الفرد من المساحات الخضراء ومناطق الترفيه‪.‬‬

‫يتضمن المشروع إعادة بناء الطريق إوانشاء ساحات وممرات للمشاة‬ ‫والدراجات ومساحات خضراء وزراعة األشجار المختلفة إوانشاء مناطق‬ ‫اللعب والنوافير والمجسمات والخدمات المتنوعة حيث تتوفر عناصر ذكية‬ ‫وشاطئ رملي للسباحة ومناطق لالستثمار‪.‬‬

‫أعلنت أمانة محافظة جدة عن إطالق مشروع تطوير الواجهة البحرية‬ ‫بأبحر بتكلفة ‪ 229‬مليون لاير‪ .‬يهدف مشروع الواجهة البحرية المقترح‬ ‫بطول ‪ 2.8‬كم إلى تطوير ما يزيد عن ‪ 180‬ألف متر مربع في منطقة‬ ‫شهرا‪.‬‬ ‫المشروع ومن المقرر أن يتم االنتهاء من المشروع في غضون ‪ً 30‬‬
