MAMMOET LIFTS DUBAI TO GREATER HEIGHTS WITH AIN DUBAI Mammoet has successfully completed its role in the construction of Ain Dubai, the world’s tallest observation wheel. Developed by Meraas, Ain Dubai sits on Bluewaters in the heart of Dubai and once operational, it will provide residents and visitors extensive views of the iconic city of Dubai and its shoreline.

In 2014 Hyundai Engineering & Construction (HDEC), the main contractor on the project, awarded Mammoet the heavy lifting contract to install the key structural elements of the wheel. Being involved in the early phase of the project enabled Mammoet to present an installation method that delivered greater efficiency, safety and cost-effectiveness. They proposed installing the largest elements, the legs and spindle, directly from the barge they arrived on onto foundations with two of their super heavy lift cranes. This eliminated the need for temporary storage, multiple barge transports and working at extreme heights.

Lifting 125m long, 890 tons legs of Ain Dubai.

Each 890-ton leg measured 125m long and 6.5m in diameter.

They were rolled onto Mammoet’s barge using 40 axle lines of SPMT at the fabrication yard in Abu Dhabi. Once on the barge, the legs were securely floated to the site. For the installation, Mammoet paired the world’s biggest crane - PTC 200-DS - a 5000-ton ring crane, with a 3000-ton crawler crane. Together they ensured the stability and flexibility required to lift each leg and the spindle from the barge into position, whilst working 137m above the ground. Subsequently, Mammoet set a world record by lifting the 1,900-ton spindle to sit on top of the four legs: it was the heaviest and highest tandem lift ever undertaken worldwide..

ISUZU ESTABLISHES INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTION CENTER IN DUBAI Isuzu Motors International FZE (IIF) announced a start of vehicle export to African countries from the International Distribution Center (IDC), established at the Jebel Ali Free Zone, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The exports were scheduled after Isuzu Motor’s first export ceremony on January 26th, 2020.

“This new scheme can create a lot of benefits to customers by cutting a delivery lead time and adding more values.

With those additional values, not only Africa, but we can also export to the Middle East and any other country in the world. We have a bright future.” said Mr. Kenji Matsuoka, Deputy President, Isuzu Motors International FZE. This scheme of exporting vehicles from IDC is aimed to respond promptly to customers’ business needs from each African country by shortening the vehicle delivery lead-time from the current five months to two months.

Furthermore, as the regional distributor, IIF can offer the vehicles with additional values such as a rear body installation, a chassis modification, a telematics installation, trade finance and to customers in the world. IIF has implemented its enhancement program of aftersales service

through the authorized dealership network in 25 countries throughout Africa.

The first voyage will be for Liberia, and will include the flagship model NPR71H. IIF plans to expand the export capacity through IDC and optimize supply-chain-logistics from various perspectives..

HINO TRUCKS DOMINATE THE UAE’S FUEL DELIVERY SECTOR Al-Futtaim’s Commercial Vehicle Division, exclusive distributor of HINO trucks in the UAE, has announced that it has delivered over 220 HINO light-duty trucks to fuel delivery operators in the UAE in 2019.

HINO 300 series 714 NWB tons and 916 SWB 6 tons trucks constitute the fleet involved in the distribution of fuel to customers for CAFU, the Middle East's first on-demand fuel delivery service app, ENOC and ADNOC. MIDDLE EAST COMPACT TRACK LOADER MARKET SEES BIG GROWTH According to Bobcat, one of the key changes in the compact equipment sector in the Middle East is the significant growth in the compact track loader market in the region. Since 2017, Bobcat has increased its share of the market, with sales of compact track loaders more than quadrupling in the same period.

Ernesto Anton, District Manager Middle East for Doosan Bobcat EMEA, said: “This growth is due to the unique characteristics of compact track loaders as tool carriers and the wide array of attachments that they can work with. We sell an expanding array of attachments to Middle East customers for both skid-steer and compact track loaders depending on the particular application, including forestry cutters, planers, wheel saws and sand cleaners. Landscaping is a much more important application in the area and customers are also looking for the high lift capacity offered by our track loaders.”

Bobcat compact track loaders provide a stable platform for working with a wide range of attachments. Using the exclusive, quick change Bob-Tach mounting systems on the machines, attachments can be added or removed very quickly, ensuring the attachment fits securely and safely to the machine in seconds.

As tool carriers, compact track loaders offer many advantages over the comparable wheeled machines. They can provide increased productivity in many conditions with a lifting capacity approximately 25% more than the equivalently sized wheeled loaders. The increased ground contact area and the lower centre of gravity means compact track loaders are

generally more stable than wheeled machines, especially when shuttling backwards and forwards.

The widest range of compact track loaders is available from Bobcat, with four models offered in the Middle East, namely the T590, T650, T770 and T870, with rated operating capacities from 971 to 1726kg and tipping loads from 2774 up to 4931kg. Bobcat also sells the company’s MT55 mini-track loader in the Middle East, with a rated operating capacity and tipping load of 254 and 732kg, respectively.

One of the most popular Bobcat compact track loaders in the Middle East is the T590 vertical lift path model powered by the Bobcat D24 49.2 kW (66 HP) turbocharged diesel engine. Productivity results from the high pressure of the hydraulic system, 101 l/min in the high flow version, which provides increased attachment performance. The T590 can be matched with over 80 different attachments and there are rear hydraulic auxiliary and 7-pin ACD connector options available..

UME COMMENCES NEW RUNSHARE BOOM LIFT FOR THE UAE MARKET United Mechanical Equipment Trading Est. AGREEMENT

NCCCO SIGNS AGREEMENT WITH FNRCO FOR CERTIFICATION SERVICES IN SAUDI ARABIA The National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators (NCCCO) and the First National Company (FNRCO) have signed a contractual agreement for the certification of crane operators, riggers, and signalpersons in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The five-year agreement was signed at the U.S.Saudi Arabian Business Council (USSABC) corporate office in Vienna, Virginia.

M

asaha Heavy Equipment was founded in 2017, and took on the dealership for Sany that year. In 2018 it added Weichai, Skyboom and Heli forklift to its stable of brands, and in early 2020 it announced that it would be the dealer for Foton.

The firm also started a rental company in 2017, and now has around a thousand pieces of equipment in its fleet of mixed brands, including cranes, earth-moving equipment, generators, aerial lifts and a wide variety of trucks, buses and pick-ups.

“For any project we can provide all kinds of equipment, from A-Z,” says Mohamad Al Mulla, general manager of Masaha.

The rental fleet ensures contractors can receive machines as soon as they need them.

In late 2019, Eid Al-Owaid, President, Masaha Heavy Equipment, travelled to Oman to open a business unit there, operating as a rental company. Initially it will focus on cranes for refinery projects before further ramping up and expanding its rental fleet. They also plan to set up a rental business in Basrah, Iraq, near Kuwait.

Sany has long been one of the top Chinese construction equipment manufacturers, notable for its wide range of equipment and depth within individual product lines, including excavators, rough terrain cranes and port equipment.

It has also distinguished itself on the international stage with a handful of key acquisitions and partnerships, including Putzmeister in 2012, while more recently Sany signed a joint venture agreement with Deutz, with plans for the two companies to produce around 75,000 engines a year by 2022.

The agreement gives Deutz a 51% share in the JV, with the German engine manufacturer investing tens of millions of euros in a new factory in Changsha.

In Kuwait, the Sany excavator is its top-selling machine – so much so that Masaha was number one in market share in Kuwait in 2018 and 2019 with Sany excavators, says Al Mulla.

The most successful model is the 35-tonne SY335C crawler excavator. The medium-size excavator has a bucket capacity of 1.5m3 and engine power of 210kW at 1,900rpm.

Market recognition has come in part due to the use of Sany machines on the Al Mutlaa project, one of Kuwait’s mega projects, with Sany excavators, loaders and even graders used

extensively on the site, notable for its hard ground conditions, rocks and harsh weather. The Al Mutlaa site, a 100,000sqkm urban development, will eventually be home to around 400,000 residents, with a number of massive infrastructure contracts signed. Seeing that the Sany machines could withstand these conditions helped convinced local contractors that the machines are robust enough, says Al Mulla.

When it comes to service support, Masaha has a number of 24/7 mobile workshops and can maintain workshops on-site for larger projects. “For projects like a refinery, we will keep our team ready 24 hours to help the customer support the customer in the projects.” They also keep sufficient spare parts at the dealership. “We keep everything here ready for the customers, and this is something they are very happy about.”

“We cannot compare the product of today with how it was years ago,” says Al Mulla. “They are making very fast developments and big improvements in the product continuously.”

He points out that Sany’s corporate motto is ‘Quality changes the world’. “This is really true – everyone is looking for a cheaper price, but without good quality a cheaper price will be useless. Really they are doing a very good job and their product is very high quality now.”

Before taking on the dealership with Sany, Al Mulla says the firm tried equipment from many different brands, and knows the strengths and weakness of machines from various OEMs in the market. In a market like Kuwait where everyone knows what’s going on, Masaha needs to be up front with customers and give accurate expectations.

“That’s why I’ll be very honest with everyone when I talk about Sany,” he says.

Bringing auctions to Kuwait

Sany offers its excavators with either a Cummins or a Weichai engine. Masaha Heavy Equipment initially specced its machines with the Cummins engine, but then began using the Weichai engine, which reduces the overall machine cost by around 10%, even higher for cranes. “For us there is no difference. Weichai is a very good engine and we get good support from the Weichai team,” says Al Mulla. However, he adds that Sany machines will soon be equipped with a Sany engine.

Sany has an extensive range of cranes, including rough terrain cranes up to 90 tonnes, as well as all-terrain and truck cranes.

Its rough terrain cranes have been quickly accepted across the GCC on major work-sites, for projects such as refineries and infrastructure. A new 120 rough terrain crane is set to hit the market soon as well, says Al Mulla.

Other key pieces of equipment offered include concrete pumps and concrete mixers with a variety of different configurations, as well as a Sany dump truck. Foton Masaha also offers a large range of buses for worker transport.

Masaha has now embarked on a new business area – used equipment auctions, the first in Kuwait, says Al Mulla. “There are a lot of new projects coming in Kuwait in 2020 and 2021, especially for infrastructure and road projects, and even for oil & gas. A lot of companies here are looking for used equipment from other companies and that’s how we got the idea for the auction.”

As a rental company, it also has used equipment to sell to the market and will be able to acquire new equipment for its rental fleet through the auctions. Equipment will be available for inspection for five days ahead of the auction. The aim is to have around 300 pieces in the next auction, from cranes to bulldozers, excavators, forklifts and smaller pieces.

Al Mulla is also expecting bidders from other countries – Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Egypt, Oman and even further afield – with auctions twice a year. International visitors will be made to feel at home in Kuwait, including arrangements for transportation between their hotel and the auction site. “Overall it will be very good for the market here in Kuwait, I think it will change the market,” he says..

Continuous improvement Sany has been selling its products in the GCC for more than a decade, meaning it has been able to continuously improve and refine its offering with respect to the environmental requirements of the local markets.

THE SMART WORK-SITE

Technology is revolutionising the construction industry, but people are still the most important factor in delivering successful projects, says Saurabh Kapoor, Director Digital & Innovation at KPMG Lower Gulf.

P

lant & Equipment: What role do you see technology and digitisation playing in transforming the UAE construction sector?

Saurabh Kapoor: The construction industry is starting to realise some tangible benefits from its investment in advanced technologies, such as more energy-efficient design, tighter scheduling, improved quality control, higher productivity and safer workplaces, to name but a few. According to the KPMG Construction Survey, nearly all construction industry leaders surveyed in the UAE expect the use of data analytics and predictive modelling to play an important role in the next five years, and digital modular fabrication within the next ten years. Overall, integrated project management systems (63%) are expected to deliver the greatest return on investment.

P&E: What are some of the most important technologies in the construction space?

Kapoor: Some of the technologies impacting the construction space are building information modelling (BIM), drones, VR/ AR and smart sensors, while 3D printing is also starting to gain traction in the UAE. One way in which 3D printing will revolutionise the construction sector is by assembling grid blocks for buildings, which are now done on a small scale in the UAE but have a great potential for future expansion.

P&E: What are the main drivers – companies seeking efficiency, or government policies?

Kapoor: Disruption and innovation continue to make the headlines, as both contractors and owners face tough decisions on where to invest resources to achieve the greatest impact. Organisations are looking at the possibility of greater efficiency, precision and predictability, making project delivery delays and cost overruns a thing of the past. Two of the main drivers would be customer experience and offering customisable and time-efficient products. Government policies to encourage 3D printing are certainly stimulating wider adoption, but ultimately the time and cost efficiency that this technology brings with it is one of the biggest motivators.

P&E: What are the challenges of adopting new technologies, given cheap labour costs?

Kapoor: Some of the biggest challenges in the construction sector are in relation to trialling new technologies. Our advice is to try out the technology first, because in many instances it is quite new and has not been tested extensively.

What works in one application may not necessarily work in another, and since most people involved in bringing the technology are either senior leadership or developers, they may not comprehend the full scale of the technology before them. Therefore, changing mindsets and investing in the

right skill sets that understand the value of the technology are two crucial factors in foreseeing that technology can be trusted and leveraged to its highest potential.

P&E: In your 2019 construction survey, ‘people’ was selected as the most important factor for improving overall industry performance. Why is this?

Kapoor: Despite the acknowledged influence of robotics and automation, our survey showed that humans remain the heart and soul of projects. 46% of respondents said that people are the most important factor in delivering successful projects, against 28% for technology and 26% for process and governance.

Leaders may have continued concerns over the ability of the next generation to fully grasp the fundamentals of project delivery, but they don’t feel this challenge can be solved purely by technology.

Instead, there is a growing belief that the way forward is to redefine project culture, train the nextgeneration workforce on both technical and nontechnical (soft) controls, and increase investment in technological capabilities of newer recruits, with guidance from more experienced workers..

n efficient public transportation system is everything for a city or country. Moving goods and people easily and affordably is what brings in the revenue from all the relevant segments that make up a successful economy.

In the Middle East, over the last few decades, prominent countries have relied on partners like MAN Truck & Bus Middle East to take forward their ambitions of providing a seamless commuting experience. Jörg Mommertz, Senior Vice President, Head of Sales Area MEA&LA and Managing Director of MAN Truck & Bus Middle East FZE, was in Dubai recently and sat down with Munawar Shariff for a detailed chat on public transportation solutions and initiatives.

Plant & Equipment: How has the region’s mindset changed when it comes to public transportation in the last decade?

Jörg Mommertz: It’s a pattern – as the world gets more populated, as our environment gets more affected, governments focus more closely on public transportation.

These are key issues as they solve traffic problems, they make

living in an urban area more attractive, and also contribute to the environmental impact with a reduction in CO2 emissions and fuel efficiency.

Here in the UAE and in Saudi Arabia, there are strong investments in infrastructure which are ongoing and we want to contribute to that with our products and services.

P&E: What work has MAN done with these governments?

Mommertz: You know, one of our long-term, loyal partners is Dubai’s RTA. We also have projects in KSA and Oman and we have the upcoming Qatar 2022 in front of us, so we have established and continue to have stable relationships with the authorities in the region. Our products are also very prominent here.

P&E: Which country in the GCC has the most effective public transportation system, and why?

Mommertz: Honestly, the UAE started earlier than any of the others and it is the best so far.

P&E: Besides buses, what are your other solutions for public transportation?

Mommertz: Of course, we are not making metros. However, we offer the most flexible transport solution – the solo

articulated city buses, intercity buses, coaches, now we also have the TGE, which is a smaller bus application. So we fit into being a very important part of what is the integrated public transport system. In simple words, someone has to bring the passengers to the nearest Metro station, and this is done using a bus. Connecting people in remote areas is the intercity bus, so this is a part of a sophisticated integrated transport system.

P&E: How environmentally sound are your buses for now and for the future?

Mommertz: Our buses are state-of-the-art and are available in the Euro 6 D emission standard, which is not yet required here because of fuel quality. The UAE is compliant with the Euro 4 emission standard. Some neighbouring countries are still below this standard.

P&E: Which is your biggest market in the region?

Mommertz: By volume and revenue, it is KSA, as it’s the biggest in terms of population and industry, but we’ve also seen similar numbers in Africa..

We have buses that run on alternative fuels such as CNG, which is an extremely environmentally friendly gas and also highly efficient. And this is approved technology, as it has been in use for the last three decades. We have hybrid solutions, hybrid buses and of course fully electric buses.

So we have the complete product portfolio available. However, the fully electric buses are not yet available here due to climate-related challenges, as well as the business environment is a little bit different here. It requires some time, but we are on track to offer these solutions when the demand arises here.

D Trucks Middle East recently organised a media briefing hosted by Mourad Hedna, UD Trucks Middle East President. Despite 2019 being a challenging year for the Middle East truck market, with most countries experiencing decreases in total sales, UD Trucks recorded strong performances in major regional markets. UD Trucks sales increased in the UAE and Oman, and held stable in Kuwait and Qatar. A key factor in these positive results was the role played by fleet deals.

“Across the region, we entered into a significant number of major contracts throughout the year. We delivered 118 Questers and Croners to UAE-based waste management company Lavajet; we sold another 106 Quester and Croner models to Kuwait Municipality for waste management use; and Oriental Trading Co in Qatar took delivery of a further 25 Questers and Croners,” says Mourad Hedna, President, UD Trucks Middle East.

“Our principal new product activity of 2019 was the launch of the New Quester in Bahrain. This model was developed

with the Middle East in mind and is proving very popular with companies around the region, which is particularly evident from the number of businesses signing major fleet deals with UD Trucks where the primary driver has been the New Quester. Most notably, we have received extremely positive feedback in relation to the new automated transmission,” continues Hedna.

A further encouraging development for UD Trucks, since the launch of the New Quester and the 40 Tonne and 8x4, is that they have finally been able to enter new market segments which were predominantly European truck makers’ monopolies.

The year ahead The year seems promising for markets in the region, as well as other markets managed from the firm’s regional head office in Dubai. The main focus is Saudi Arabia, which had a transitional year in 2019, but a new partnership with Zahid Tractor in the Kingdom means its attention will be focused

transmission was launched. The New Quester is effectively still a new product, so a key focus for UD Trucks this year will be to continue promoting this model to businesses around the region.

UD Trucks also regularly organises major customer activities, and this year will be no different. While full details are yet to be confirmed, customers will get the chance to test drive, both on-road and off-road, the full UD Trucks range during an engaging, experiential event in Oman at the end of March.

And away from direct product activities, last month UD Trucks organised activities in Saudi Arabia, where it officially relaunched the full range with its new partner Zahid Tractor in three cities – Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam. Then later in the year, in Kenya, UD Trucks will inaugurate its new KD facility in partnership with CMC Motors.

Mourad Hedna, UD Trucks Middle East President. on building on this relationship in the months ahead. “We will naturally be looking to increase our presence in all other markets, working closely with our fantastic regional partners, both in terms of sales and also our customer service offering,” continues Hedna.

One area of particular significance to UD Trucks in 2020 is its work in East Africa. “Recently, we have reactivated our presence in several countries across this region, and we will continue to expand our activities here in 2020. Kenya will be a key focus – this is a market we reactivated last year with the launch of a new product range, and we have also announced a new KD facility that will start operations very shortly as a result of our partnership with CMC Motors, part of Al Futtaim group,” he says.

Another focus for UD is the complete solution it offers when it comes to servicing customers. The firm works actively with multiple finance offers to support customers and improve brand perception, and where initiatives have led to success, it wants to replicate these methods in other markets. The top markets for this during the year are Saudi Arabia and East Africa.

Product launches In 2016, UD Trucks launched the Quester and in 2017 the new Croner. In 2018 the additional Quester variants were introduced, such as the 40 Tonne and 8x4, and in 2019 an improved version of the New Quester with the ESCOT automated

One initiative is a collaboration with Volvo’s CSR programme which began in 2017. In partnership with SIDA (Swedish International Development Corporation), Volvo has built a driver training academy in Ethiopia. It was inaugurated in March this year, with UD Trucks donating three Questers.

The objective of this project is to develop professional skilled drivers, in order to reduce accidents and improve traffic safety. Ethiopia is notorious for its very serious accidents – 77 accidents out of 10,000 are fatal – hence the government is very focused on improving driving safety. And in the logistics industry, there is always a of skilled drivers. This initiative will supply 480 professional drivers to the country annually.

“We are happy to contribute to this project; with the supply of the Questers we want to contribute to Ethiopia’s economy and social development, which in turn contributes to our brand image of going the extra mile,” says Hiroshi Yokofujita, Sales Director New Market, UD Trucks MEENA. The firm is also working with UNESCO in Pakistan to launch a programme promoting the retention of primary school kids in two districts of the country..

FOR LESS DOWNTIME FAMCO, Volvo Trucks and Volvo Construction Equipment opened their first Uptime Centre at FAMCO’s DIP location.

A

n Uptime Centre is a major commitment by FAMCO to its customers in the UAE and the wider region.

Uptime is important for FAMCO’s customers and for Volvo. The Uptime Centre will improve the uptime of all connected vehicles through centralising tools and competence, having increased opening hours, providing a 24/7 road assistance team and increasing parts availability, as well as allowing FAMCO to align its activities with Volvo Group’s vision and strategy.

The Uptime Centre reads vital data such as diagnostic fault codes, wear on components (brake pads, air drier, clutch) and actual truck usage, in order to optimise maintenance. Volvo uses sophisticated machine learning algorithms to predict the failures and to analyse the age of components. This data is sent from the truck to the satellite and then processed at Volvo servers before it is finally shared with the dealer.

Through deep learning and machine repair history, patterns in error code, sensor data and operator behaviour that have led to different machine breakdowns in the past are searched for.

Once these patterns are found, AI (artificial intelligence) is set up to monitor the database for these patterns so that alarms are triggered, thus changing unscheduled downtime into a scheduled service.

The centre has to work closely with the entire registered dealer network; this ensures a close feedback loop to validate the service and, through iterations, continuously improve it.

The close collaboration between Volvo, its dealer network and customer contact is what makes Volvo ACTIVE CARE for Volvo Construction and its non-fleet truck monitoring service unique in the industry. It is the power of advanced analytics along with field experience that brings success to the service.

Superlative customer care

When reading vital data from a truck, Volvo aims to make user-friendly systems to make it easy for personnel to know when and how to act. Key competencies are analytical skills, vehicle technologies competence and local knowledge about customer usage.

All Volvo customers subscribed to the Blue, Silver and Gold service contracts have access to uptime services. For customers who have their own workshop, FAMCO provides a subscription to the Dynafleet or CareTrack fleet management system that then allows the FAMCO Uptime Centre team to communicate with them.

More than a thousand connected vehicles and machines are currently being tracked in the Uptime Centre. The technology being used to analyse data from all these vehicles and equipment is mainly divided into three areas – uptime, productivity and analytics.

Uptime: information on competencies in vehicle technologies, customer usage of the vehicle, road conditions, maintenance and repairs, and diagnostics. Being able to have an updated maintenance plan, and act on alerts and fault codes from connected vehicles.

Productivity: competencies in vehicle technologies, vehicle specification and customer usage of the vehicle, design and function, driver training. Being able to suggest improvements in driver performance.

Analytics: competencies in data management and in producing reports.

FAMCO and Volvo share all information gathered from these areas in order to have the best uptime and productivity. Since all vehicles have Dynafleet, they can be advised on ways to improve driver performance and productivity. For optimum uptime, reading connected data varies depending on a model’s year and market specifications. Reading fault codes varies in terms of time and severity.

All Volvo Group vehicles are supplied with built-in connected devices that provide comprehensive information on vehicles, drivers and operation performances, interfaced with planned services and preventive repairs, to combine strong fleet management tools to monitor uptime and profit.

There will be no need to set up any more Uptime Centres in the UAE, as this centre is capable of offering the highest levels of support to the FAMCO customer base throughout the emirate. Due to economies of scale, many GCC countries do not require an Uptime Centre like FAMCO’s.

However, by working closely with importers throughout the region and helping them to further enhance their capabilities in utilising the data produced by Volvo Truck products, Volvo will allow its partners to work closely with their customers to ensure their vehicles are monitored and maintained to the optimum standards required. The data produced by the Dynafleet system will also be used to maintain the highest levels of uptime and vehicle availability through proactive service planning.

By staying connected to a vehicle throughout its operational life, maximum return on investment in an asset can be achieved. This protection is gained through monitoring and improving driving habits, thus ensuring the most efficient

practices and public sector practices.

Sustainable driving practices include reducing time spent idling, optimising driving speed for the most efficient fuel consumption, and holding driver training sessions with incentives to promote sustainable driver behaviour.

Sustainable operations The American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) has outlined three areas where both long-haul and last-mile fleets can concentrate their efforts: driving practices, vehicle

Driver behaviour determines a great deal when it comes to fuel usage, but it can be hard to ensure compliance with sustainability guidelines – and even to know how drivers are currently performing in that regard – without some objective way of tracking it. Fortunately, there are telematics solutions that can help keep tabs on what’s going on with each driver, from idling time to speed control and beyond, which can help in putting together a training programme and checking for improvements.

Vehicle practices that contribute to fuel efficiency include enhancing vehicle aerodynamics, implementing truck technology, and using cargo management systems. New technology is also making it possible for fleet managers to optimise their vehicles’ fuel efficiency at an entirely new level.

Another solution is a result of the exploding sharing economy – load sharing allows fleet managers to ensure that their drivers are never running empty, by matching available loads to nearby empty trucks. By maximising every mile, less fuel is wasted and fewer emissions are produced..

REACHING FOR HEIGHTS New machines and technologies from manufacturers could help access equipment rental companies to provide an expanded and more efficient service offering to their customers.

usiness has been slow for aerial work platform (AWP) suppliers in the GCC. In the UAE, a number of new rental companies entered the market in 2016-2017, leading to oversupply and putting pressure on rates. Meanwhile, in other markets, notably Saudi Arabia, delays in projects have also slowed down sales.

“2019 was definitely a challenging year for everyone in construction equipment overall,” says Ian Hume, Sales Director, Middle East, India, Russia & Africa, at JLG Industries. “We saw the numbers of machines coming into the market being put under pressure.”

This was particularly felt in the UAE, typically one of the biggest regional markets for access equipment. “[Lower sales in the UAE in 2019 were] partly a result of two very strong years of growth in 2017-18. We saw some new rental players enter the market over the past three years, leading to slight pressure on rental rates.

We have seen some bright spots in Saudi Arabia, and we’re expecting that to continue in 2020, so much so that it could be that Saudi Arabia overtakes the UAE as the biggest buyer of access equipment in the GCC,” says Hume. Traditionally, around 75-85% of JLG’s sales in the region are to rental companies, he adds.

Major projects in other GCC countries, such as the BAPCO refinery project in Bahrain or the Duqm project in Oman, could lead to spikes in demand, he says.

“Whether you see a huge amount of investment in new equipment or transfers of fleet from the UAE – which may be more likely – these are welcome projects for the region.”

Cashflow and timely payments remain a perennial pain for contractors and and rental companies, Hume notes.

“Particularly over the past 12 months, it’s really been a challenge to collect your dues from the market.”

Sharbel Kordahi, Director – AWP MESART and Managing Director – Terex Equipment Middle East, says 2019 was acceptable for Genie overall, although it did not meet expectations, with delays on projects causing many customers to in turn delay their own capital expenditure.

“Nevertheless we still maintained our market share, which is always a good thing,” says Kordahi. The cyclical nature of sales also reflects shifts in the market structure. “In the past three years, the market has shifted from being predominantly an end user market to being predominantly a rental market. Last year was a reflection of that.”

Among established access rental equipment players, there are questions about the sustainability of the low rates offered by some of the newer players in terms of their overall business model. “We have seen several new entrants into the market,” says Andy Carter, GM of Hertz Dayim. “Despite offering

new equipment, the rental rates being offered will deliver substandard return on investment, which eventually makes it difficult for these companies to invest further in this product range.”

Wilfred Fernandes, Resale Business Manager at Access Rental Gulf, says it’s a tough market for rental houses, with pressure on rates and bottom lines. Customers are also becoming used to a higher standard of service. “It’s driving the market to be more creative,” he says, with rental companies offering better payment terms, improved operator training and work-site management services to make the offering more attractive.

Nevertheless, sales of used rental machines from ARG remain constant, with the main buying markets of ex-GCC machines including India and African countries, he says.

Safety-focused Despite difficult market conditions, rental company customers are also being more selective in their requirements, meaning that rental companies still need to invest in the latest equipment, operator training and other productivity features.

Some of the biggest clients are in the petrochemicals sector, where equipment requirements are especially stringent.

“Rental companies are now forced to maintain younger fleets, with machines between three and five years old,” says Kordahi.

Professional operator training, overload sensors and spark arresters on engines are among the key features required on a rental machine for demanding clients, he notes.

Rental companies need a very diverse fleet that can replace whatever a customer is currently using with existing solutions, whether it’s a step ladder, a folding scaffold or a compact crawler, says Hume. “The demand we’re seeing from the rental companies is not just your traditional electric scissors and diesel booms, but we’re also getting demand from other market segments that can give them potentially higher returns than traditional access.”

Hertz Dayim has one of the largest fleets in the region, says Carter. “Our recent investment has been into the Ultra Booms, which is in line with our financial strategic plan as the investment utilisation and dollar utilisation deliver better returns.” The company has always offered the latest safety features

Hertz Dayim has one of the largest MEWP fleets in the region. and telematics systems – “This is now a prerequisite from many of our clients,” says Carter.

In September 2019, Dubai Municipality released a Technical Guideline for Mobile Elevated Work Platforms (MEWP), providing detailed instructions around operating access machinery, including a requirement for trained operators that is more in line with European standards. This should boost demand for professional access solutions, if end users can no longer use ad-hoc solutions or machines powered by untrained operators.

“Items like that – improving the safety or regulations of working heights, similar to the European model – will encourage companies to use access, and it is a safer and more productive way for you to do the job anyway,” says Hume.

There’s hope that enhanced guidelines will be adopted more widely around the region. “The Dubai Municipality guidelines are excellent, they put some guidance towards the condition of equipment, the operator qualification – they mandate IPAF, which is all fantastic,” says Kordahi. “But I think now the next step will be to improve the training for the inspectors that come and inspect the machines, so they know what they’re doing.”

The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) is a key player when it comes to operator training and safety standards, and many of the OEMs and rental companies in the industry are members. Hertz Dayim is an accredited IPAF training provider in KSA and will soon roll out the service offering across Kuwait and Qatar, says Carter.

“We believe this demonstrates the strength of our brand, providing our clients with peace of mind that we can provide intense training to their operators to ensure they are working safely and efficiently.”

Indoor use is one key application for electric or hybrid MEWPs.

Will access go electric?

While electric access machines are widely used in highly regulated markets, this is not so much the case in the GCC. “I don’t think that the level of penetration of electric and hybrid products are at the level we would want them to be, because this is a big focus area from all the major manufacturers. In the GCC countries it is very selective and depends on the customers themselves, but there are no rules or regulations driving the use of electric products,” says Kordahi.

That contrasts with markets such as the EU, where use of electric machines is more regularly required, such as in builtup areas. Kordahi suggests that in the GCC, electric machines could be required to be used in certain key areas, such as Downtown Dubai or the King Abdullah Financial District in Riyadh, instead of diesel machines that are noisy and produce fumes. Requirements for use of electric machines indoors could also be more stringently implemented, he suggests.

There may soon be more use of electric access machines, with a wider range of options for buyers. JLG offers lithium-powered electric booms which can match diesel for performance, as well as being suited for work on construction sites, says Hume. But one reason electric machines are not widely used is convenience around fuel supply; diesel is readily available on all construction sites, while a consistent power supply to charge the battery has to be available on-site, rather than a fluctuating power source or generator.

“These things will come as the infrastructure is built around it, but at this point it’s still a challenge, especially in construction,” says Hume. Facilities management is one area where electric machines are more quickly being adopted, he notes.

Telematics systems are also a focus area for manufacturers, increasingly used by rental companies as a fleet management tool to monitor machines, says Kordahi.

“Telematics can see where the machine is working, but also how it is operated, what condition it is, whether there are any faults, and – when there is a fault – whether this can be rectified simply with a phone call rather than having to drive to site for something simple. It’s more of a demand for rental companies than end users,” he says.

A number of customers are currently doing trials with JLG’s ClearSky telematics product, and Hume believes rental companies stand to benefit the most from increased visibility into a machine’s health. Being able to accurately diagnose a fault on a machine remotely allows a firm to send out a technician with the right tools and spare parts to fix it, rather than having to travel to the site to diagnose the problem and then potentially return to collect what is needed to make the repair – especially when it comes to remote sites that take hours to reach, such as a petrochemical plant in Al Ruwais.

Using telematics also allows rental companies to offer additional features to customers, such as access control – a lock on the machine that only the trained operator can unlock, visibility over where a particular machine is working on a construction site, and geofencing machines to the zones a contractor is responsible for.

Rental companies will also benefit from JLG proactively monitoring machines and the OEM’s expertise, says Hume.

“As rental companies start putting a dollar value against that high spend and the loss of efficiency, then it becomes a very easy calculation for them to have ClearSky fitted onto their JLG fleet.”.

CRITICAL SUPPLY Genset manufacturers and rental providers are focused on providing cost-effective, reliable and innovative solutions for end users.

ithin power there is a large spectrum of machines and offerings, from the simplest low-cost generators to large, sophisticated gensets used for specialised and critical applications.

When it comes to complex jobs, many customers rely on rental companies for their expertise. In December, Aggreko signed a five-year contract to deliver a 24MW gas-battery hybrid power solution to United Steel Industries Fujairah steel mill. The mill is the largest of its type in the UAE, supplying 1.1m tonnes of steel components to the construction and manufacturing sectors.

Aggreko’s deployment includes 13 highly efficient gas generators delivering 19MW of primary power, and a 5MW battery system comprising five battery packs providing frequency regulation and back-up power. The battery system will remove the need for a spinning reserve and balance out sudden jumps in the mill’s load. Traditionally, this is managed by diesel generators that run constantly at part load, consuming excessive amounts of fuel and increasing overall carbon emissions.

“By using our proprietary monitoring software to inform our data-driven decision-making, we have also been able to deliver a 49% cost saving on fuel costs,” says Phil Burns, Managing Director for Aggreko Asia and Middle East. “We are delighted that we have been able to deliver a reduction in carbon emissions for United Steel Industries while still improving the overall fuel efficiency of the mill.”

Rental companies encounter a wide variety of projects, each varying in terms of scope and location, says Andy Carter, GM of Hertz Dayim. “Our smaller projects could be a stand-alone generator rental, short-term specifically for events, or for long-terms such as powering up a construction site. Larger projects could be dispatching 10MW power for seasonal events like the Holy Hajj pilgrimage, to uninterrupted power supply for shutdowns or medical facilities,” he explains, noting the ability to support different market sectors with varying scales of power requirement.

For the Holy Hajj pilgrimage, Hertz Dayim provided temporary power of 10MW. “Preparation and coordination activities were initiated weeks in advance, with mobilisation of over 40 units across an area where mobility is the major challenge,” said Carter. “The team completed the ground preparation well ahead of time, with power services functional before the first pilgrim entered the holy site. We had a service team in place 24/7 to cater to any unforeseen downturn. The overall project was a

success, with zero downturn and uninterrupted power supply for the entire duration.”

One constant is that all rental clients require their supply partners to provide complete power generation solutions, says Carter. “This includes site survey, technical recommendations, supplying all ancillary accessories. This also includes back-up supply, which means uninterrupted power supply, always.”

Hertz Dayim’s footprint extends across Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, with KSA its main area of operations, bringing into play the large distances and isolated work-sites found in the kingdom. “The majority of our equipment is used in remote locations that at times become difficult to monitor both in terms of usage and breakdowns,” says Carter. For this reason, the firm’s power units are all fitted with telematics to provide real-time machine performance updates such as fuel usage and engine performance.

The rental company’s unique selling point is the low average age of its fleet, which enables it to provide the latest technology to customers. “Our association with leading blue-chip manufacturers ensures that our equipment delivers optimal productivity,” says Carter.

All about engines There’s no doubt that the engine is the most significant component of a generator, both in terms of its function and in dictating the end price. To generalise, the market has a choice between simpler mechanical fuel injection engines – often coming from markets in Asia where there is less of a focus on emission standards – and direct fuel injection engines from regulated markets, where there is a laser-sharp focus on enhancing productivity and reducing emissions driven by regulations in the EU, the US, Japan and elsewhere.

Fabio Rigon, Vice President of EMEA at FPT Industrial, says the Middle East is an important market for the company, although this is mainly indirect; the Turin-headquartered company supplies power generation engines to many large genset manufacturers which sell into the Gulf, including Himoinsa, Generac and Pramac, and has a structure in the region to support distributors and dealers (though product support is also often carried out directly by OEMs).

Features of the FPT engines include low fuel consumption, an outcome of dedicated engineering focus. “We use a specific combustion chamber design, which helps us reduce fuel consumption relative to our main competitors,” says Rigon.

The service interval on the engines provided to genset OEMs is also longer – competitors normally offer around 500 hours for the basic oil change service interval, while for FPT the service interval is 600 hours, he says, noting that this not only saves money for end users, but is also better for the environment.

With the focus on emission reduction standards, technology is a key differentiator between engine manufacturers. Even in countries with lower emission standards, such as in the Middle East, buyers still benefit from the investment in technology and engineering, given the improved efficiency of engines

when buying a product with an FPT engine, notes Rigon. This is becoming increasingly important, as fuel costs have risen

across the GCC and may continue to do so as governments pare back subsidies. For low-emission or non-regulated markets, apart from engine price, service support is essential to the overall package, says Rigon.

Network requirements Within the genset market, there is also a wide variety when it comes to low-cost gensets. These are basically commodity items, compared to more expensive units for more advanced applications.

Daniel Crossan, GM at Himoinsa Middle East, says the firm has a strong brand in the market, with good results around the 200-700kVa range. “In that range, quality is an important factor, and as a European manufacturer and a premium brand we do well.” They see consistent sales in the lighting towers sector as well, says Crossan. “It’s a bit of a commodity item, but because we’re a manufacturer we can adjust a little bit on price depending on volume.”

Hertz Dayim says the low average age of its genset fleet is a unique selling point for the rental company.

Himoinsa is also competitive on the project side, such as 1MW and above. However the sector is hotly contested, with major international manufacturers increasingly producing out of

99% uptime, and if these are not met, there may be quite harsh penalties for the rental company.”

Standby projects are another area where premium products are sought out. “For example, if you’re installing a standby sytem in a hotel or shopping mall or other site, it’s really important that if the power from the utility does go out, that the genset can start and will provide the power that is required for emergency services, HVAC, fire pumps or whatever else is required. It’s very critical that the genset works when called upon,” Crossan notes.

Crossan says Himoinsa is seeing a lot of competition in the standby sector, and its job is to convince customers of the need to buy a quality product that will perform as required when called upon. “Buying a cheap genset for a standby application which doesn’t run when required is kind of like having an insurance policy that is void from the day you buy it,” he says. “Hopefully they’re not needed often, but when they are, we have confidence that our product can stand up to what it is we have sold.”

sub-continental Asia, Turkey and Lebanon to reduce overall product costs, says Crossan. With a total of 13 production facilities in Europe, North America and South America, Himoinsa also has a factory in China, allowing it to leverage lower production costs there.

Himoinsa also offers hybrid gensets – currently a buzzword in the market – with telecommunications a key sector for this. Himoinsa offers a hybrid unit with solar panel and a battery, which can result in significant fuel savings. “Hybrid is not a new solution, but it’s becoming more feasible, and the drop in prices on solar panels over the last five years or so has made a big difference to the overall TCO model.” It recently executed a project supplying 11 all-in-one-box units to a local rental company for use in the telecoms sector, which is currently undergoing trials. “The main constriction factor is the price of fuel – the less you run the generator the less fuel you burn, and so the less money you spend.” This is balanced against the cost of the solar panel, but for the boxes the firm engineered a solution whereby the batteries could withstand a much quicker charging time. Apart from the financial savings, this also reduces carbon footprint.

Longer term, Crossan sees regulation and the price of fuel as key drivers of uptake of hybrid solutions and the push towards green energy..

When it comes to the smaller range – 5-100 kVa – the market is saturated by low-cost manufacturers. Most buyers at this end of the market are looking for a product that may only be used for a short time, versus larger gensets where there is more of a total-cost-of-ownership mindset among buyers, says Crossan.

Buyers of larger gensets also typically have more rigid requirements around the security of the power supply, he says. “Security of power is very important, depending on the market sector. In the telecom sector, in locations where their infrastructure can’t be connected to the utilities network, generators are needed to run consistently to meet network requirements.

“It has been an incredible journey with UD Trucks, and it is truly the people and the relationships with customers and dealers that have made it worthwhile,” said Swanepoel. “It has been a privilege to be a part of the brand’s growth and development throughout the years, and I am excited about the future of UD Trucks in the region.”

Van den Heede has been involved in the trucking industry and the Volvo Group for the past 22 years and was previously Vice President of Vehicle Sales and Marketing for UD Trucks International Sales, which included responsibility for the southern African market. He has extensive experience in all aspects of the business, including aftermarket, business development, new product introductions and sales.

“Last year was an extraordinary year for UD Trucks Southern Africa, as we launched three new model ranges in the region,” said Van den Heede. “Our customers now have access to an extensive model line-up, from medium to extra heavy commercial vehicles, backed by the company’s 58 years of experience in the local industry.”

He said customers remain the company’s core focus, and the reason behind the continued investment in new products and services.

At its annual press conference, marketing director, Rory Schulz said that the performance of the commercial vehicle market was certainly erratic during 2019, as local economic conditions continued to be less than favourable.

“Despite all the odds, the total commercial vehicle market remained resilient and logged year-on-year growth of 2.1% at the end of 2019,” said Schulz. “However, transport operators continue to face severe cost pressures, with fluctuating diesel prices, overall safety of drivers and trucks, as well as instances of civil unrest, hitting many operations hard in the past year.”

Schulz further emphasized that the Southern Africa truck market is quite unique as on the one hand there are customers who want their fleets to have highly developed technologies and systems, while others are happy to stick to the very basics.

Globally, UD Trucks has already developed and implemented technology to addresses vehicle automation, electromobility and connectivity.

“Aspects such as connectivity through telematics, which was deemed unnecessary a few years ago, has become a very essential part of the modern fleet owner’s operations. Not only does it provide customers with real time tracking of their vehicles, it allows UD Trucks to provide owners with proactive support through vehicle health monitoring and remote customer assistance,” explained Schulz. “In the process, it makes our customers’ fleets safer, more efficient and more productive.”.

EGYPTIAN LEADERS PREPARE TO USE RAP Key decision-makers in Egypt recently attended a seminar on how to utilize recycled asphalt (RAP) in the production process. Several Ammann and EAST (Ammann dealer in Egypt) officials spoke at the event, focusing on recycling in general as well as the capabilities of Ammann asphalt-mixing plants. In addition, university professors explained the benefits of the new technology, while delegates from Arab Contractors Company discussed their experience regarding implementation of recycling.

The gathering was held in Cairo and was attended by senior leadership from the Engineering Authority of the Egyptian Army, leaders of Arab Contractors Company, and all heads of the Roads & Bridges Authority in Egypt.

For Ammann, the seminar was the culmination of multiple efforts to help Egyptian leaders bring asphalt recycling to their country. The activities included previous visits to various plant locations in Europe and Ammann headquarters in Switzerland as well as a demo at an Arab contractor’s facility.

McCloskey 628RE trommel screeners, with a screening area of 34.5m² and drum size of 1.83m x 8.53m, are fitted with a 130kW engine and a 1,210 litre diesel tank. The remotecontrolled radial fines conveyor has a 160° swing and a variable discharge height for maximum oversize stockpiling flexibility. The maximum radial stockpile height is 5.13m.

The heavy-duty oversize conveyor at the end of the trommel offers adjustable speed and a maximum stockpile height of 3.08m. Other features include a 5m³ hopper, user-friendly ground-level adjustable brushes for minimal downtime and an intuitive, icon-based user interface, which allows all functions to be easily controlled and closely monitored.

VOLVO TRUCKS STARTS 2020 ON A HIGH NOTE Volvo Trucks Southern Africa ended 2019 as the top-selling heavy-duty truck manufacturer in South Africa. According to Naamsa, the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA), Volvo Trucks company sold 3,206 units in South Africa and other African countries during last year, giving them a 23.2% market share of the segment.

The first place for Volvo Trucks is an improvement of its position in 2018, when the company finished in third position - a 4.8% growth in market share.

Volvo Trucks Southern Africa has assembly facilities in Durban and currently has four ranges available: the FH16, FH, FM and FMX. The company is also responsible for export to countries like Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Remote job-sites and high productivity requirements mean customers are looking for maximum uptime at low ownership costs from their large wheel loaders.

heel loaders do more than just pull their weight on a job-site. Whether it’s loading trucks, moving mountains of aggregate or backfill, handling material such as marble or tree logs, or working in the pit, wheel loaders can be responsible for moving more material on-site than any other single machine.

In Africa, demand for loaders has risen as new projects come online. “The quarry and aggregates industry supports the infrastructure development in the region, where many large-scale projects have started over the past few years,” says Bjorn Westlund, Global Application Specialist, Load & Haul at Caterpillar, explaining that those projects have driven up demand for both new and used equipment.

“Some of those projects are located in remote locations and this can bring its own challenges; however, thanks to telematics and digital technology, solutions and support are more readily available than ever.”

Nevertheless, market conditions in some countries or sectors are currently challenging.

In North Africa, political uncertainty – elections and forming new governments – has led to delayed investment in infrastructure projects, says Ilkay Fidan, Business Director for Africa, Turkey and the Middle East at Volvo Construction Equipment. “The outlook for 2020 is lightly positive in North Africa compared to 2019 in general,” he says.

Volvo’s large wheel loaders are used in heavy infrastructure projects, as well as for mining and in the quarry and aggregates business in general, says Fidan. “As a base of demand decreased, 2019 was a difficult year for some customers in these segments. However, we have seen lately that mining is on the up and demand is increasing.”

The right-size loader When choosing a wheel loader, work-sites need to balance the productivity of a larger machine against greater capex cost and higher running costs, especially fuel. Correspondingly, a loader that doesn’t have a large enough capacity can lead to productivity problems such as increased waiting time for trucks.

Making sure you have the right machine for the job is also an important factor for machine durability, notes Westlund.

“The Cat large wheel loaders (986K to 993K) are designed to be primary pit loaders working directly at the face, performing consistently and reliably over multiple machine lives and in some of the toughest conditions. Pairing a robust design with a solid preventative maintenance (PM) programme, Cat pit loaders deliver some of the highest machine uptime and availability in the market.”

Tendayi Kudumba, GM of Liebherr’s Earthmoving Technology Division, says its large wheel loaders are used across Africa for handling heavy materials such as coal, iron ore and chrome, tough applications that require a high level of robustness and reliability. The German

availability. This is a key decision factor, not only in erratic phases of the market,” says Kudumba, explaining that Liebherr is in a strong position because it has a dense service network across the continent with several partners all over Africa.

Fuel is typically the highest single operating cost, and in remote operations the distance from refineries and fuel depots has a further impact on cost, notes Westlund. “The current generation of Cat wheel loaders enjoy some of the highest efficiencies of tonne per litre, driving down the total cost per tonne of material moved.”

Mid-sized and larger wheel loaders are used for a wide variety of applications.

Preparing for and scheduling preventative maintenance services for a fleet can also be a challenge in a remote location, says Westlund. By using data collection via Cat’s telematic tool Product Link, available with cellular or satellite reporting (or both), the service team can be prepared before coming on-site for maintenance and service.

Lifetime costs add up The overall total cost of ownership is an especially important calculation for customers buying a new loader, says Volvo CE’s Fidan. “Fuel efficiency, together with repair and maintenance costs, are important factors for the customers. In general, country-specific legislation or logistic capabilities create difficulties for customers and dealers. Parts availability is crucial for customers’ operations. That’s why a strong brand and dealer footprint are key to success.”

When buying a Liebherr machine, African customers benefit from low operating costs over the entire life of the machine, says Kudumba, in particular due to low fuel consumption.

“Compared to conventional wheel loaders of the same size, the Liebherr hydrostatic driveline achieves a reduction in fuel consumption of up to 25%.”

Serviceability and robustness are even more important for machines on remote job-sites. manufacturer has a specialised range of wheel loaders for the African markets, ranging from the L 524, with an operating weight of 10,400kg and a tipping load of 7,500kg, up to the L 580, with an operating weight of 24,720kg and a tip load of 18,000kg.

The range is a result of Liebherr’s decades of experience in producing and developing wheel loaders, says Kudumba: “Despite the competition from Eastern Asian and from other international manufacturers, Liebherr wheel loaders have been gaining popularity in Africa.” The mid-range L 550, with an operating weight of 17,350kg, is its top-selling wheel loader, but sales of the L 566 and L 580 in the African market have been growing steadily as well, he says.

With job-sites often found in remote locations, that creates additional pressures. “We perceive that African customers look for the best possible service network and spare parts

Cabin comforts Operator comfort is an important consideration for manufacturers – after all, the operator spends almost the entire working day in the cabin, notes Kudumba, who says the Liebherr wheel loader cabin is designed with the machine operator in mind. “The displays, controls and operator’s seat are carefully coordinated to form an ergonomic unit. The optional air-suspended operator’s seat offers high seating comfort and relaxed working.”

The Liebherr control lever allows all working and manoeuvring operations to be performed with a high degree of precision and sensitivity, he says. “This means accurate and safe handling, and the left hand always remains on the steering wheel, increasing safety at the job-site.”

Other safety considerations include all-round visibility and an engine hood design optimised for viewing, while the cabin

offers roll over protective structures (ROPS) and falling object protective structures (FOPS), especially important in tough mining applications, says Kudumba. “In case of an emergency, the optional electro-hydraulic emergency steering system serves as a contingency system.”

The functionality and user-friendliness of Volvo wheel loaders make it easier for the operator to be more productive, so much so that operators who operate a Volvo wheel loader often do not want to change to another brand because of the comfort and productivity of Volvo machines, says Fidan.

Customers in Africa and Europe enjoy the same high-quality cab, he notes. The Boom Suspension System available on Volvo machines also ensures safe and comfortable operations in bucket applications, leading to increased productivity.

Westlund points out that the controls are placed within easy reach of the operator in the Cat cabins, while the Cat wheel loaders come standard with seat-mounted STIC steering and EH implement controls that reduce the force needed to operate the linkage, reducing stress and fatigue.

“Those same controls are now paired with our next generation of seats with enhanced adjustability, heated and ventilated cushions, and air suspension. Combining our electro hydraulics controls with impeller clutch pedal for rimpull control and throttle lock operation, operators have a single pedal operation and precise fingertip control, reducing complexity and increasing productivity,” says Westlund.

The right tool Key considerations when selecting a bucket for a wheel loader include material density, abrasiveness, fragmentation of shot, bucket fill factor and pass match target, says Westlund.

“We offer a broad range of bucket sizes to accommodate for densities, allowing our customers to hit target payload. We also provide additional wear packages to handle abrasive materials. The key is selecting a bucket that will meet production requirements while still providing adequate life. It is a balance.”

The use of other attachments can equip a wheel loader with efficient tools for specific tasks. In order for customers to be able to work with a variety of attachments, Liebherr offers two different types of lift arm variants for its loaders - the Z-bar linkage and then the parallel linkage (on the L 524 and L 538), or the industrial lift arm (on the L 550 and L 580).

“The standard Z-bar linkage provides a large torque in the lower region of the lift arm. This is the ideal prerequisite for conventional wheel loader applications, for example for breaking out material from a pile and transporting it to a crusher,” says Kudumba.

Meanwhile, the parallel linkage or industrial lift arm has a parallel guide arrangement and especially high torque in the upper lifting range, he says. “This is the best solution for industrial use as it allows large attachments, such as highdump buckets or log grapples, to be fitted. Moreover, parallel linkage and the industrial lift arm are well suited to working with a fork,” he explains.

Although by far the highest demand is for single-bucket specifications, says Fidan, customers understand the versatility advantage of a wheel loader where there are changing environments on job-sites. “Volvo is a pioneer in attachment bracket applications and enjoys a high market share where they are necessary, such as in the marble industry,” he says..

SUCCESSFUL COOPERATION

DOOSAN EXTENDS ENGINE COLLABORATION WITH SCANIA Scania has signed an agreement with South Korean construction equipment manufacturer Doosan Infracore on continued engine deliveries.

Since cooperation between the two companies was first initiated in 2010, Scania has been a supplier of engines for several of Doosan’s heavy construction equipment segments. Scania’s engines were fitted to Norwegian Moxy’s articulated dump trucks already in the 1970s.

This company was later acquired by Doosan Infracore, which then incorporated the use of Scania engines in the wide machinery portfolio offered by the company, including wheel loaders, excavators and articulated dump trucks.

JOINT VENTURE

DEUTZ AND SANY ANNOUNCE THE JOINT VENTURE AGREEMENT FOR SHARED ENGINE PRODUCTION DEUTZ and its joint venture partner Sany announce that their agreement to establish shared engine production in China came into effect at the end of 2019. The agreement was signed back in September 2019 but was subject to the necessary approvals being granted by the relevant competition authorities.

As well as various off-highway applications, DEUTZ is also taking over the manufacture of heavy-truck engines for Sany as part of the joint venture. In the initial stage, the plan is to build around 75,000 new engines in 2022 at a new factory in Changsha, capital of the province of Hunan. Production is scheduled to start in 2021.

The province of Hunan supports the setting up of the joint venture and is contributing several tens of millions of US dollars in further funding to the project. “Establishment of the joint venture as part of our new China strategy is proceeding

SKYJACK EXPANDS PRESENCE IN SOUTH KOREA Linamar Corporation’s Skyjack division has expanded its presence in Eastern Asia by opening a 21,527ft2 (2,000m2) facility just outside of Seoul, South Korea. The industry leader has gradually gained a foothold in the region, with sales starting in 1994 and enhancing its service offerings by providing dedicated service support since 2013.

“Asia is a growing market that can’t be ignored, and this facility is a testament to our commitment to help grow the access market abroad,” explained Simon Cracknell, sales, operations, and market development director for Skyjack Asia.

“As we did with the Chinese market, we started slowly with sales and service and now have a full team operating from our Gyeonggi-do, South Korea office led by General Manager JC Chun. NEW GENIE S-60 J BOOM OFFERS ESSENTIAL WORK AT HEIGHT PERFORMANCE A new generation of the popular Genie S telescopic boom lifts is now available globally and available for delivery to the Europe, Middle East, Africa and Russia region (EMEAR) starting June 2020. According to Larin, the Genie S-60 J man lifts are ideal for completing work-at-height jobs, such as general construction, maintenance, inspections and painting. The new Genie S-60 J boom is equipped with everything operators need, including a standard 1.8 m (6ft) jib and unrestricted platform capacity of 300kg (660lb), allowing for two occupants plus tools. The Genie S-60 J model offers a platform height of 18.5m (60ft 10in) and a horizontal reach of 12.3m (40ft 6in), providing access where it’s needed - at the top of the boom’s working envelope.

The new MAN Truck Generation will follow in the footsteps of the legendary series. The MAN TGA, which was presented in 2000, was formative for truck construction.

The new MAN Truck Generation sets standards in driver orientation, assistance systems and digital networking. With fuel consumption reduced by up to eight percent, the new MAN Truck Generation accomplishes significantly lower CO2 emissions. To avert severe traffic accidents, the new Truck Generation will feature innovative assistance systems including newly developed turn assist, the traffic jam assistant as well as lane change assist.

MAN is introducing a new consultation and offer system which is entirely oriented towards the needs of the customer. It follows a product logic which is consistently oriented towards the application profile. The new MAN TGS is targeted as before on the heavy-duty construction vehicle, distribution and municipal services sectors. This model series is characterised by narrow cabs, because in typical applications both low unladen weight and good visibility are key. In terms of power units, MAN offers the TGS with the D26 or D15 engine, covering a broad power range from 330 to 510hp. The wide range of variants also makes the MAN TGS the king among the lions when it comes to drive configurations. Whether the 4x2 and 6x2 as semitrailer tractors or chassis units, the classic 6x4, 8x2 and 8x4 for a wide variety of sectors, or the specialist all-wheel drive rigs for rough terrain configured as 4x4, 6x6, 8x6 or 8x8.

If the vehicle is mainly driven on paved roads, and additional traction is only occasionally required, MAN HydroDrive can be combined with a 2, 3- or 4-axle MAN TGS. Featuring such a variety of set-ups, the gross vehicle weight of the new MAN TGS ranges from 18 to 41 tonnes.

The light and medium tonnage ranges in the new truck generation are again covered by the MAN TGL and MAN TGM. There is a choice of four new narrow cabs: short, long, high with a bed, and the crew cab. The crew cab is used in the construction industry, by municipal service providers, as well as by emergency services. With its 4-cylinder version of the D08 engine, the new TGL covers a range from 7.5 to 12 tonnes. If that unit's 160 to 220hp power range is not sufficient, the TGL can also be equipped with the 6-cylinder 250hp D08 engine. That is also the basic power unit for the MAN TGM range, which extends up to a 320hp 6-cylinder D08. The tonnage range of the new MAN TGM takes up where the new MAN TGL stops, extending from 12, 15 and 18 tonnes to 26 tonnes gross vehicle weight. While the MAN TGL is available exclusively in 4x2 versions, the MAN TGM also offers 6x2, 6x4 and 4x4 wheel configurations, which makes it attractive not only for medium-heavy overland distribution transport and urban logistics but also for many applications in construction, municipal services and fire-fighting..

SDLG ENTERS HEAVY-DUTY MOTOR GRADER MARKET WITH NEW G9290 MODEL Leading Chinese construction equipment manufacturer SDLG announced the latest addition to its range of motor graders, the G9290. The new motor grader has a a base operating weight of 22.9 tonnes and a 14ft wide blade as standard.

The G9290 is the first motor grader from SDLG in the heavy-duty size class that provides strength and capacity making it ideal for mining haul road maintenance, infrastructure projects, road construction, highways and airports. The robust design builds on the proven reputation of its smaller brothers - the G9138, G9190 (VHP) and G9220 (VHP) - when it comes to the moldboard, circle turn, drawbar, front axle and rear tandems.

The circle turn, exclusive to SDLG, uses twin-gear hydraulic cylinders to provide instant, high-output torque, enabling moldboard rotation under heavy loads. The unique SDLG circle drive system comes with five support shoes on the G9290 and non-greasing slide bushings for better grading, an extended service life and easier maintenance.

SDLG graders also feature an asymmetric drawbar ball stud that can be rotated 180° in order to keep the drawbar in horizontal level position - vital when performing fine grading.

The hydraulic system consists of one variable displacement axial piston pump supplying oil to the proportional closed centre load-sensing main control valve. This ensures that sufficient flow is always available.

The G9290 adds a new level of quality with its Volvo-supplied engine and Volvo-designed transmission. A member of the Volvo Group since 2007, SDLG draws on the strength of the group to incorporate high-performance designs and technologies into its products where appropriate.

Supplied by Volvo, the SD130B Stage III diesel engine with electronically controlled fuel injection system offers high torque at low revs from a 211 kW output with Variable Horse Power (VHP) technology as standard. Meanwhile, the HTE840S transmission, designed specifically for motor graders

A ROPS/FOPS certified cab ensures the safety of the operator.

It is fitted on the front frame of the G9290 in order to reduce vibrations and heat from engine and transmission. Entry and exit can safely be made with three-point contact all the way.

The cab is fitted with LED work lights to ensure safe operation even in the absence of daylight.

The design of the G9290 provides visibility for the operator to the front and the sides of the machine, with large windows to enhance all-round visibility. Inside the cab, the low efforts control levers are ergonomically laid out with ample adjustment possibilities to fit every operator’s needs. ‫تم اختيار مشروع طريق الممر الشرقي في غانا لربط العاصمة أك ار‬ ‫بالمناطق الشمالية وعبر الحدود إلى منطقة الساحل‪ ،‬المشروع الذي تقدر‬ ‫تكلفته ‪ 113.27‬مليون دوالر أمريكي يغطي طرقًا بطول ‪ 60‬كم وتقاطعي‬ ‫طرق باإلضافة إلى األشغال المدنية المرتبطة‪ ،‬كما يتضمن مبادرات دعم‬ ‫مجتمعي للمساعدة في تحسين سبل المعيشة في منطقة مستجمعات المياه‪،‬‬ ‫تغطي المرحلة األولى من المشروع بناء الطرق وتنمية المجتمع على طول‬ ‫وصلة دوفور اديدوم – اسيكوما (‪ 39.2‬كم) و اسوتور ‪-‬افيام (‪ 23.9‬كم)‬ ‫مع بناء تقاطعين في دوفور اديدوم واسيكوما‪.‬‬

‫يقع المشروع بالقرب من حلبة البحرين الدولية في صخير‪ ،‬وسيتم بناء‬ ‫مركز المعارض والمؤتمرات الجديد والذي تبلغ مساحته ‪ 308،000‬متر‬ ‫مربع على قطعة أرض مساحتها ‪ 1.3‬مليون متر مربع‪ ،‬سيكون المركز‬ ‫الجديد أكبر خمس مرات من مركز المعارض الحالي في سنابس وسيكون‬ ‫المشروع األكبر من نوعه في المنطقة‪ ،‬كما سيعزز المركز مكانة المملكة‬ ‫كوجهة سياحية وتجارية رائدة‪ .‬سيشتمل المركز الجديد على ‪ 10‬قاعات‬ ‫عرض تبلغ مساحتها اإلجمالية ‪ 95000‬متر مربع باإلضافة إلى جميع‬ ‫الخدمات الالزمة المصاحبة لها‪ ،‬باإلضافة إلى المناطق المخصصة‬ ‫أيضا على قاعة مؤتمرات‬ ‫لتجارة التجزئة والفعاليات‪ ،‬كما سيشتمل المرفق ً‬ ‫مساحتها ‪ 4500‬متر مربع مقسمة إلى ثالث غرف منفصلة عالية التقنية‬ ‫و عدد ‪ 27‬غرفة اجتماعات صغيرة ومتوسطة للمؤتمرات واالجتماعات‬ ‫بمساحة إجمالية تبلغ حوالي ‪ 1700‬متر مربع‪ ،‬باإلضافة إلى غرفتين‬ ‫مجالس لكبار الشخصيات‪.‬‬

‫بدأت شركة استيراد أمواج ‪ -‬الشركة وراء بوابة أمواج ‪ -‬في استكمال‬ ‫أعمال التطوير لهذا المشروع والذي يعد أحد أكبر المشاريع العقارية في‬ ‫البحرين‪ ،‬تمتد بوابة أمواج على مساحة ‪ 33‬ألف متر مربع وتقع عند‬ ‫مدخل المجمع المبتكر المطل على الماء والمسمى جزر أمواج‪ ،‬وهي‬ ‫سلسلة من الجزر االصطناعية تقع على بعد ‪ 10.5‬كيلومتر شمال شرق‬ ‫الجزيرة الرئيسية في البحرين قبالة ساحل المحرق‪ ،‬من المقرر أن يتم تنفيذ‬ ‫مشروع بوابة أمواج على ثالث مراحل‪ ،‬مع االنتهاء من جميع أعمال‬ ‫التطوير في غضون خمس سنوات‪.‬‬

‫سيتم بناء سد كونزفي والمتوقع أن ينهي مشاكل المياه عند التقاء نهري نو ار‬ ‫ونياغوي في منطقة غورومونزي ويقع في منطقة مستجمعات مختلفة من‬ ‫سدود تشيفيرو ومانيام وسيكي وهارافا والتي تستمد مياهها من نهر مانيام‪.‬‬ ‫سيتم بناء المشروع من قبل شركة هيدرو الصينية بموجب ترتيبات بناء‬ ‫وتشغيل ونقل وسيقع السد على بعد حوالي ‪ 70‬كم شمال شرق المدينة‪،‬‬ ‫عالوة على ذلك‪ ،‬فإنه من المتوقع أن ينتج سد كونزفي ‪ 250000‬متر‬ ‫يوميا‪ ،‬سيشتمل المشروع على بناء السد ووضع‬ ‫مكعب من المياه للمدينة ً‬ ‫خط أنابيب وبناء محطات مائية جديدة‪.‬‬
