THIRD EDITION OF AUTOMECHANIKA RIYADH TO RETURN IN 2022 Automechanika Riyadh, Saudi’s only trade fair for the automotive aftermarket and services industry, will run from 13-15 June 2022 at the Riyadh International Conference and Exhibition Centre (RICEC), the show’s organiser announced.

Automechanika Riyadh is organised by Saudi-based AlHarithy Company for Exhibitions (ACE) Group under licence from UAE-headquartered Messe Frankfurt Middle East, which organises Automechanika Dubai, the Middle East and Africa’s largest international trade show for the automotive aftermarket and services industry.

Long-term prospects for Saudi’s auto aftermarket look good after a pandemic-affected 2020. According to Glasgow Consulting Group, a market intelligence firm, Saudi’s passenger vehicle components market will be worth nearly $5bn 2022, compared to an estimated $4.5bn in 2021.

Car owners also spent on average $314 per vehicle on parts in 2020 according to Frost & Sullivan, another consultancy.

KALMAR SECURES ORDER OF 81 TERMINAL TRACTORS

ABB TO CHARGE QATAR’S LARGEST ELECTRIC BUS INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT ABB has won a contract to design, supply, test and commission a new high-power charging infrastructure for one of the world’s largest fleet of electric buses.

The project will see ABB provide high power charging infrastructure for the fleet, which is expected to have 1,000 electric buses operating across the country and with a capacity to transport 50,000 passengers a day.

Kalmar has secured an order from DP World to supply 81 Kalmar Ottawa T2 terminal tractors for its South Container Terminal (SCT) in Jeddah Islamic Port, Saudi Arabia. The order was booked in Cargotec’s 2021 Q2 quarter order intake with delivery scheduled for Q2 of 2022.

Jeddah Islamic Port is the largest port in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and a major trade hub, connecting the east-west trade routes. Global trade enabler DP World was awarded a 30-year Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) concession in 2019 by the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani), for the management and development of the Jeddah South Container Terminal at the multi-purpose Jeddah Islamic Port. As the leading enabler of smarter trade around the world, DP World is committed to making a better future that supports economic growth and business development, and raises the standard of living for communities. DP World Jeddah’s operations are aligned with the Saudi Vision 2030 of transformation, and will further assist the ease of doing business in the ports and logistics sector by introducing advanced technologies. In addition to Kalmar terminal tractors, the current equipment fleet at SCT includes Kalmar reachstackers and empty container handlers.

Mohammad Alshaikh, CEO DP World Jeddah and Country Head KSA, said: “The new equipment procured from Kalmar and added to our equipment portfolio will further accelerate DP World Jeddah’s SCT development plans, which aim to further enhance its infrastructure capabilities and technology driven services to continue providing our customers with seamless quality services.”

Qatar aims to have 25 percent of its public bus network operating on electric by 2022, rising to 100 percent by 2030. As part of this plan, the state will create one of the largest e-bus networks in the world, in a single installation.

Partnering with Mannai Trading Company, Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ and fleet operator, Mowasalat, ABB will design and deploy Heavy Vehicle Charging equipment across multiple locations in Qatar, including four bus depots, eight bus stations and 12 metro stations. The project scope also includes a three-year service level agreement.

For the project, ABB will supply over 125MW of charging capacity, 1,300 connectors for destination charging and 89 opportunity chargers, four of which will be mobile.

With this charging solution, the complete Mowasalat electric bus fleet can be charged overnight at the depots and while in use without impacting regular operations, ensuring a fast and convenient charging experience for operators and passengers.

ABB will also provide the data connection and interfaces to connect and integrate the charging infrastructure operation into the Mowasalat Fleet Management System for 24/7 fleet optimization. Besides integration with the Fleet Management System, chargers will also be connected to the ABB Ability cloud to remotely monitor and diagnose the infrastructure by using more than 400 parameters.

This complete solution maximizes uptime and efficiency and ensures reliable infrastructure for the public..

The Kalmar Ottawa T2 combines power, functionality and performance with excellent ergonomics and easy maintenance access. T

he used equipment market is often a barometer for the health of the construction sector, or even the global economy. Looking back to the global financial crisis in 2008, the market weakened as contractors and fleet managers looked to dispose of excess units or even entire fleets, creating smart buying opportunities for those with cash on hand.

But fast forward to the current situation and the outlook is very different, with shortages of raw materials and components such as semiconductors, logistics slowdowns and lockdowns affecting manufacturers of new equipment and extending lead times in many segments. This is pushing customers who need to mobilise fleets quickly to consider used machines.

“In common with Europe, a growing number of equipment buyers in the Middle East are experiencing long lead times on the delivery of new equipment, largely due to delays resulting from Covid-19 lockdowns and a range of ongoing supply chain issues,” says Nicola Nicelli, Ritchie Bros. Vice President of Sales for Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). “This is exactly where online auctions such as those organised by Ritchie Bros. can help equipment buyers, since machinery and heavy equipment inventory listed in online auctions are immediately available and shipped without delay.”

In the first quarter of 2021, Ritchie Bros.’s global website traffic was up 47% year on year, with bidder registrations up 49%. “Increased buyer activity can be attributed to the fact that auctions provide quick access to work-ready equipment,” says Nicelli, adding that the firm’s in-house shipping services give overseas buyers more confidence and ensures the smooth transportation of assets to buyer locations anywhere in the world.

Through its Dubai yard, Ritchie Bros. is currently witnessing good demand for used machinery and equipment, as well as strong pricing, he says.

That’s also a sign of confidence in the outlook for the construction sector in the GCC and wider Middle East.

Among the region’s largest markets, Saudi Arabia is forecast to recover in the second half of 2021, growing by 2.9%, after contracting by an estimated 0.5% in 2020, according to data from Globe Newswire.

“Sector players are confident there are many potential growth areas, and any expansion in the construction sector will result in an increased need for construction equipment and machinery,” says Nicelli.

Looking back at the past 15 months, he notes that the auctioneer came into the pandemic in a good position, with its digital transition well underway. In March 2020, it pivoted fully from live, in-person auctions to an entirely online auction format, a shift that was accelerated by pandemic lockdowns.

Activity at the quarterly online Timed Auction in July 2021 set three new company records for May-June auctions in the region: highest number of new bidders, highest number of new buyers, and highest number of registered bidders – 26% up on the same auction last year.

“Our recent record online auction results are proof of widespread customer acceptance of online auctions and evidence they can be an effective solution to mitigate the effects of pandemic lockdowns. [Online auctions] are here to stay.”

Equipment sellers now have two primary options when disposing of machinery: the online Timed Auctions, held quarterly, or the everyday online marketplace, Marketplace-E.

at staggered times on September 28 and 29. “Don’t delay in consigning your equipment, as the longer [it is listed] on our auction site means more eyes on it and the greater likelihood of stronger bidding,” says Nicelli.

Priced lower than new, it expands your options without increasing the budget. Still, not all used machines on the market are equal – and buying one with a warranty provides peace of mind, explains Anas Ashour, Used Equipment Manager at Mohamed Abdulrahman Al-Bahar.

s contractors look to mobilise fleets and scale up operations, used machines are a popular option, given that the business outlook remains somewhat uncertain.

With lower acquisition costs, less capex is tied up in the fleet, but managers can still get highly productive machines – if they know how to select the right one.

Anas Ashour, Used Equipment Manager at Mohamed Abdulrahman Al-Bahar, notes that while used equipment can offer some great benefits for customers, including high resale value and cost-effective productivity, there can be downsides if a contractor buys a machine that has undisclosed faults which affect productivity or require significant unplanned expenditure on repairs.

Al-Bahar, the Caterpillar dealer for five GCC countries since 1959 (the UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain and Qatar), offers a wide range of used machines, with stock from its rental fleet, leasing and trade-ins. Significantly, the machines have been serviced by the dealer’s well-trained technicians and service staff, using authentic Cat spare parts, and is offered with a limited warranty.

“We do everything possible to ensure the machine is thoroughly inspected and serviced – the engine, transmission, hydraulic system, checking for leaks, the body – we make sure to rectify and repair every single issue to the highest standard,” says Ashour.

With all the things that can be wrong with a used machine – some easy to spot, some harder to discover – it’s no surprise that customers feel more secure and confident when they buy a used machine with a warranty, says Ashour. “There will be no headache, as they know it’s covered by Al-Bahar.”

Top-selling models include mid-weight excavators such as the 320, wheel loaders like the 966 and bulldozers including the D8, though the full range of used machinery can include motor graders, pavers, telehandlers, skid steers, backhoe loaders, articulated trucks and other machines, depending on available stock, says Ashour.

Currently, for its entire range of certified used machines, Al-Bahar is offering a full year warranty and a 2,000 hours Preventive Maintenance (PM) Kit, at no additional cost. What to consider when buying a used machine Depreciation is one major factor to consider. A common misconception is that used construction equipment depreciates faster than brand-new heavy machinery. Heavy machinery, whether new or old, can offer lasting durability depending on the manufacturer and the maintenance it receives over the years, and this is reflected in its resale value.

Obviously, the most important focus for buyers is machine condition. By taking a methodical approach, they can assess a machine’s condition, its likely performance on a job-site and whether it is likely to require any significant repairs in the near term. Apart from higher costs and lower performance, poorly maintained machines can also be a safety hazard on-site.

The first place to check is the machine’s service record. Has it been regularly serviced at all the key intervals, using the manufacturer’s recommended spare parts? If not, or if the service record is not available, that is a red flag or indication of possible high repair costs. Checking how many hours a machine has on its clock against the recommended major service intervals provides an estimate for when its next major overhaul is needed.

allow dust, sand and other abrasive contaminants to enter the fluid system, potentially causing major damage. There may also be internal fluid leaks, which are harder to spot.

Evaluation of used construction equipment should also include an extensive analysis of the machinery in motion, and buyers with less experience of a particular machine will need expert advice. Nevertheless, when inspecting a machine for purchase, even the most experienced buyers may fail to locate some problems.

The extensive work done by Al-Bahar’s technicians to ready a used machine for sale is far more likely to correctly assess a machine’s health and make the necessary repairs. For AlBahar, the value is to sell machines that clients can rely on, but also to carry out any required servicing ahead of the sale, as making additional repairs under the warranty only creates additional costs for the dealer. Overall, that points to the value of a warranty for a used machine, says Ashour.

“The main differentiator for us over other used equipment suppliers in the region is our Certified Used brand and the peace of mind it gives customers,” he concludes..

Damage to the exterior and attachments of the equipment, or error codes showing on the front panel, are other things to look for. Buyers should also check that the equipment display and gauges function properly while the machine is in motion, and that moving parts such as shafts, belts and gears are properly guarded.

Starting the engine is the quickest way to check a machine’s health. Problems starting, or thick black smoke, are warning signs. Next, check for fluid leaks. Leaks from the hydraulic system increase operational costs if the fluid needs to be regularly topped up, affect machine performance and wear out components. If the fluid is leaking, a non-pressurised line may

aving been in the UAE for more than 30 years, GORICA Group is a recognised force in the Gulf and wider Middle East. The company is ready to work with any customer, and there is no typical client, explains Domen Bockor, GM for Sales and Marketing. “We deal equally with massive companies that can buy up to 500 units, and on the other end of the spectrum a sole operator buying a single trailer.”

GORICA has factories and workshops throughout the Middle East. In Saudi Arabia, the company is building a factory that is expected to be operational in the coming months, its completion delayed somewhat by Covid restrictions. It will improve after-sales support for customers and speed up lead times, while the factory will also carry out body-mounting of superstructures on rigid trucks.

Local manufacturing gives GORICA a big advantage, he says.

“We are by far the number one body builder in the Middle East and Africa and West Asia, in terms of output and product depth. And we are recognized as number 15 in the ‘World TOP 30 body builders’ by Global Trailer [publication].”

For the near-term market prospects, Bockor says the outlook for GORICA is linked with the sales of major European and Japanese truck-makers, since its buyers of a new premium truck typically buy a trailer from GORICA once they have ordered a new vehicle. More broadly, economic development is changing the Gulf from a construction-based economy to a more service-based economy.

One of GORICA’s main advantages is its strong after-sales support, with service staff in all the major locations, meaning they can quickly attend to a customer and communicate well with a company’s drivers and staff. That also translates to strong resale values on the used equipment market, he notes.

Products with more electronics naturally need greater aftersales support. “For a tipper trailer, unless there is an overturn, there is typically only really minor support required.”

“If I look from now 10 years down the road, there will be less of these type of products and many more serviceoriented products, meaning waste management products like garbage, compactors, refrigerated trailers, milk tankers for transportation of fresh milk, fuel tanks, animal feed bulkers and so on.”

From that perspective, GORICA is directing its product development towards high-tech solutions, whether waste management solutions for municipalities or refrigerated trailers, a process that began eight or so years back, he says.

“We ‘smelt’ this transformation of the economy and the market, and we are working closely with European truck-makers and we see changes being implemented on their trucks. We have

prepared ourselves and are now really only widening our product base, because we already built the manufacturing capabilities, the design capabilities and the rest.”

The company is also aligning its R&D and production innovation focus in the direction of Expo 2020 and the UAE government, namely zero-emission and electrified products.

“We are working on sustainability of transportation, which for now can only be achieved in certain industries and certain productions, though as the technology develops we will be able to go further.”

The company has a broad supply chain in Europe and South Korea, including steel suppliers like SSAB in Sweden, Thyssenkrupp in Germany and Hyundai in South Korea.

When working with major international companies, such as Wabco for braking systems, they have vast supply chains with manufacturing locations across the world. “Our supply chain is mainly based with European suppliers, that’s how we ensure high quality levels.”

The company has also invested in high-quality manufacturing techniques, including automatic welding and submerged arc welding for cross-sections of tankers. All the CNC rolling is fully automatic, and the plasma cutting and steel bending are automated. “The level of automation [in our manufacturing facilities] is so high, it’s comparable to any European body builder.”

BAUER INVOLVED IN THE EXPANSION OF EGYPT’S LARGEST PORT The Egyptian government has been planning to develop six main ports to accommodate the growing demand on the seaborne trade. Bauer Spezialtiefbau GmbH, through its local subsidiary Bauer Egypt S.A.E., is involved in four of them.

Bauer Egypt S.A.E. was awarded by the main contractors Edecs and Gieco for the deep foundation works of a semirectangular quay wall with a volume of 225,897m3, consisting of a front diaphragm wall, two rows of middle piles and a rear row of barrettes.

In addition to four trench cutters, two Bauer drilling rigs of the type BG 28 are in use. The vertical elements are planned to be executed parallelly by the means of two mega mixing

plants located initially on the north and south sides of the wall covering a 200m radius around each of them. The mixing plants will be shifted along the quay wall as the work progresses..

EPIROC PARTNERS WITH IVANHOE MINES IN SOUTH AFRICA Epiroc has won a significant order for battery-electric mining equipment from Ivanplats that will be used to develop its greenfield mine in South Africa in the most sustainable and productive manner possible.

Ivanplats, a subsidiary of Canadian mining company Ivanhoe Mines, has ordered several Boomer M2 Battery face drill rigs and Scooptram ST14 Battery loaders. The new Platreef underground mine, which will trial the emissions-free machines during its initial development phase, will produce palladium, rhodium, platinum, nickel, copper and gold.

“It is encouraging that Ivanplats is considering going all battery-electric at Platreef, and we are proud to support them on this journey,” said Helena Hedblom, Epiroc’s President and CEO. “Battery-electric equipment is increasingly embraced by mining companies as it provides a healthier work environment, lower total operating costs, and higher productivity.”

“We want to be at the fore-front of utilizing battery electric, zero-emission equipment at all of our mining operations,” said Marna Cloete, Ivanhoe Mines’ President and CFO. “This partnership with Epiroc for emissions-free mining equipment

at the Platreef Mine is an important first step towards achieving our net-zero carbon emissions goals while mining metals required for a cleaner environment.”

Boomer M2 Battery face drill rigs and Scooptram ST14 Battery loaders are built in Sweden, and are automation ready and equipped with Epiroc’s telematics solution Certiq. The equipment will be delivered early in 2022. Epiroc will also provide on-site operator and maintenance training to Ivanplats.

Epiroc will offer its complete fleet of underground mining equipment as battery-electric versions by 2025, and its full fleet for surface operations as battery-powered versions by 2030..

FARMERS TEST OUT THE AXIAL-FLOW IN MOROCCO Around 75 farmers have taken part in a demonstration of the new Axial-Flow 4088 in Morocco, as part of the product’s official launch.

Compact dimensions, operator comfort and advanced features are combined with high harvesting capacity, thorough crop threshing, low grain losses, gentle grain handling and unsurpassed sample quality. Designed in the USA and built in Case IH’s state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Harbin, China, the Class 4 Axial-Flow 4088 combine harvesters incorporate a high level of Americanmade components for maximum reliability.

According to Case IH Business Manager for West Africa Region, Hassib Thabet, farmers in Morocco are contending with larger fields and longer workdays and require powerful machinery to get through their harvests efficiently. “Moroccan farmers need a reliable, fast, and productive machine to get every grain in the tank as fast as possible,” said Thabet. “In this respect, the Axial-Flow 4088 is way ahead of any other combine present in Morocco today.”

With its rotary threshing system, maintenance on the AxialFlow is quick and easy. Daily maintenance can be conducted in considerably less time than it would take for a conventional harvester, so the Axial-Flow 4088 can be in the field and ready to go earlier each day.

The demonstration was conducted in demanding conditions, with the wheat crop yielding between nine and 10 tonnes per hectare. The Axial-Flow 4088 was able to make the most of this high-yielding crop with a fast, efficient harvest which protected grain quality. This demonstrates the swift return on investment farmers can achieve with Case IH’s latest combine harvester offering in Morocco.

Also, part of the demonstration day was the SB531 small square baler, which produces 36cm x 46cm bales. The Case IH SB531 small square baler has a reputation for reliability, standing up to season after season of heavy-duty baling.

FUSO DELIVERS 50 UNITS OF THE CANTER Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation announced that 50 units of the Canter have been delivered to Nigerian Breweries Plc., the largest brewing company in Nigeria.

The Canters, which were delivered in mid June 2021, are of the FE84 model of the light-duty truck. The FE84 is a 4×2 with a GVW of 6.5 tons, and has a wheelbase of 3350mm. The size of the trucks and their toughness makes them perfect for the distribution of Nigerian Breweries’ products through most urban and rural roads. The Canters are expected to travel between the Nigerian Breweries plant in Lagos and beverage wholesalers throughout the country. The Nigerian brewing industry has seen stable growth during the past decade, supported by a large and young population, and companies such as Nigerian Breweries have seen a need to boost their distribution capacities.

Most trucks sold in Nigeria, including the FE84, are assembled at a KD facility operated by CFAO Motors Nigeria Ltd. Local assembly of the FUSO Canter began in 2017 with the FE84 and since then, the FE71 has also been added to the production portfolio. The KD Kits for these trucks are exported from MFTBC’s Kawasaki Plant in Japan. The KD production is one of the cornerstones of the strategy for FUSO trucks in this growth region, with MFTBC partners having invested in local assembly facilities in other African countries such as Kenya and South Africa. Crushing equipment specialist Pilot Crushtec is seeing growing demand in South Africa from the mining sector as rising commodity prices breathe new life into this industry.

This contrasts with the construction sector, which remains challenged, according to Francois Marais, Director of Sales and Marketing at Pilot Crushtec. Sluggish demand for construction materials has meant that aggregate crushers capital expenditure remain under pressure.

“The upturn in mining is spurring local demand for our mobile crushing equipment as contractors – who are our traditional

“We not only design and build crushing and screening plants but also bulk handling equipment, from conveyor systems including down-hill conveyors with power generation and seaport equipment such as ship loaders, barge loaders and port hoppers. Another field where we are active is truck- and train-loading systems for bulk solids, not to forget dedust filters and environmental solutions.”

In a bid to address an absence of high-quality manufacturing within the industry in the Middle East and Africa region, the firm has also introduced a new line of business, contract manufacturing.

“Through contract manufacturing, we aim to deliver quality and niche steel products at a substantially lower price than that offered by our German and other European competitors,” explains Kerler. “Our strategic location in the UAE also poses advantage for the customer in terms of lower freight costs and deletion of import tax, thereby substantially reducing the overall investment with no compromise on the quality.”

Since inception, the strategy has been to target projects in the UAE, Quarry Mining’s home territory, as well as regional projects and international markets, with the focus increasingly further afield, especially Africa.

“We have built our credibility in the Middle East market through numerous project executions for clients, to name a few such as Stevin Rock, Rak Rock, Ma’aden and Emirates Global Aluminum,” explains Kerler. “This has helped us secure orders from European companies such as Haver Niagara, IBAU Hamburg, Knauf, Grenzebach when working to set up their plants in the African region.”

That includes designing, building and installing a feeder system and crusher system for gypsum plants in Egypt and Tanzania, which gave the firm experience in these markets. “We were involved in these projects right from the conceptualisation of the layout, detailed engineering, fabrication at our in-house facility in the UAE and installation at site by our team in both Egypt and Tanzania.”

In terms of Africa, Kerler says the top requirement is reliable machinery of the highest quality, with high productivity. The plants also need to be simple and easy to maintain.

Looking specifically at the range of crusher plants, Kerler says that with 40 years of experience the firm has a good understanding of AME market demands. “The important thing is availability of our plants. With proper maintenance, our clients can operate with availability of up to 96% even while operating at two-shift, 24/7. A low-cost operation is only possible with a reliable equipment supply.”

Kerler says the focus is on integrating the equipment on a site and making the flow of material seamless with the conveyors, from receiving the feed to delivery of final products. “We work hand in hand with the client to understand their requirements and offer solutions that are technically and commercially feasible.”

Moving to production, the company designs and plans crushing and screening plants with its in-house engineering team and does all steel work in its own factory, sourcing core equipment from notable European manufacturers, such as gear motors from Stiebel. Feeders, rollers and other moveable items are purchased from renowned European – mainly German – manufacturers.

“This makes our plants top-ranking in quality while we can offer them for very competitive price, as much value is added in the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah at quite competitive cost.”

A common industry headache when it comes to project execution is interface bottlenecks between contractors such as electrical and mechanical. These issues often prove to be difficult to resolve and can cause budget overruns, notes Kerler. By covering all the mechanical and electrical aspects of projects itself, such problems can be avoided.

“We like to refer ourselves as international plant manufacturers, as each plant is unique in its design and poses its own challenges. Only a team that has executed diverse projects in the bulk material handling field can take them on comfortably and deliver a successful plant.”

After-market support is naturally an important consideration.

Quarry Mining is based in Ras Al Khaimah with over 140 staff, near Dubai, a logistics hub for Africa. Its installation team consists of over 30 experienced mechanics, electricians, welders and fitters.

It also has its own purchase company in Germany to guarantee fast and competitive supply of spare and wear parts. “Most of our clients have come back for repeat orders, which is a testimony of our reliable after-market support and services,” Kerler concludes.

Washer plants, recycling solutions from CDE Specialists in wet processing equipment, CDE Group is headquartered in Cookstown, Northern Ireland. The company has supplied plant to projects across Africa and the Middle East, both in the construction industry and mining, says Ruchin Garg, Regional Manager - Middle East & Africa at CDE Group. Major applications including equipment for sand, silica, and gold and diamond processing.

CDE’s first major project in the MEA region were two sand washing plants in Qatar in 2009, used to wash sand from old riverbeds (wadi), helping reduce the country’s reliance on imported materials. Each plant can process around 1000 tonnes per hour, and at the time they were installed they were among the largest in the world.

The company has been active in Africa since 2011, while in 2014 it opened an office in Dubai covering markets in the Middle East and Africa. “We see MEA as emerging markets that have a massive potential. We have a team on the ground to support sales and aftersales work and respond to our customers in real time,” says Garg.

Recycling of construction and demolition waste is a major focus for the company. CDE plants have diverted more than 90 million tonnes of waste from landfills and provide reuse materials for construction projects worldwide.

CDE’s machines have been deployed in markets in Europe, North America and Australia, notes Garg, where resources can be scarcer, and recycling is more advanced because it has been underway for longer. Using on-site recycling also reduces logistics costs, with fewer trucks needed to transport materials to the site, or to carry waste to a landfill.

Quarry Mining can provide a full solution to clients, including plant design, manufacturing and installation.

Recycling processes are set to be adopted in the MEA region too. “With the quantities of sand we are being depleted for construction purposes, recycling of construction waste will

eventually be adopted by all countries in the Middle East and Africa, but some specific countries will definitely be quicker,” says Garg. “Looking at MEA, I see Qatar, Kuwait, UAE as the most promising markets, because of their market conditions and commitment to the environment.”

Garg notes that some contractors are already recycling waste on site using mobile crushers and screens, but the possible applications are quite limited, such as road sub-base or general fill. Recycling with just a crusher and screener produces what is effectively a low value aggregate, says Garg. “If you want to utilise it in any different applications in construction, especially for non-structural concrete, it has to go through a process of washing.”

The addition of a washing plant allows the contractor to use the material more widely on site, but also to sell it on to other contractors, helping to pay down the capital costs of investing in plant more quickly.

Using recycled aggregates for applications such as nonstructural concrete would require changes in local regulation.

Garg notes that they have gained approval for recycled aggregates to be used in non-structural concrete in a wide variety of markets, including the UK, Norway, and France, demonstrating its potential.

Meanwhile, CDE’s sand washing applications, including products such as the EvoWash, are widely used through-out Africa, with around 40 plants, and another 100 in the Middle East. Washing sand is essential for use in concrete by removing contaminants whether chemicals or clay, while removing clay reduces the amount of cement needed for a batch of concrete. Overall, correct washing of sand can reduce the cost of cement on a project by around 2-3%, depending on the initial clay content. “It really gives you an impressive return on investment as a contractor for any structure you are building,” says Garg.

CDE washer plants are commonly equipped with the AquaCycle, which recycles around 90% of the water back into the circuit. “Within the MEA regions, recycling the water is extremely important, due to the difficulties of accessing fresh water, considering the climate within the region. The AquaCycle allows immediate reuse within the system, which minimizes environmental impact as well as health and safety risks on site.”

Another area of focus is silica. CDE have a major plant in Tunisia and another in South Africa, while there is also focus on Saudi Arabia. Overall, demand for silica is set to rise because of the large investments being made in industrial segments such as solar panels, glass, and semiconductors, says Garg. “They all need silica, and once the requirement for silica goes up, companies involved in its production will be looking to increase output. Our customer in Tunisia has seen how our advanced technology has allowed them to make such a huge impact on the glass sand industry in the North African market and has enabled them to become extremely competitive amongst an industry with very high standards.”.

XCMG SHIPS 972 UNITS OF CONSTRUCTION MACHINERY EQUIPMENT TO SOUTH AMERICA “The delivery event in partnership with COSCO Shipping is of great significance for XCMG and our partners. We overcame the huge difficulty of supply chain maintenance during the COVID-19 pandemic situation, and enhanced global customer confidence,” said Lu Chuan, President of XCMG.

Leading construction machinery manufacturer XCMG sent 972 units of construction machinery products to customers in South America via COSCO Shipping on July 20 from Lianyungang, China. XCMG’s batch delivery, including excavators, loaders, graders, among others, were loaded in 935 containers, marking the single largest overseas shipment in five years and the second largest since the V58 Project in 2011.

XCMG and COSCO Shipping have formed a powerful alliance since XCMG won the bid for a major project in South America in early 2021 but then faced the enormous challenge of delivering all products within a short period of time during the pandemic as the global supply chain and sea freight logistics capacity was massively restricted. COSCO Shipping acted quickly to allocate resources and customized a solution plan for XCMG to solve the container transportation issues to ensure timely and orderly shipping.

THYSSENKRUPP SELLS MINING BUSINESS TO FLSMIDTH thyssenkrupp announced the sale of its Mining Technologies business unit to FLSmidth, thus reaching a further important milestone in the initiated realignment of the group. UK-based Synergy Plant Hire has taken delivery of five Hitachi Zaxis-7 excavators with clamshell telescopic arms to maximise productivity and efficiency on a variety of below-ground excavation projects. The four ZX350-7 special application models, constructed in and shipped directly from Japan, will be ideal for working on the HS2 high-speed railway network linking up London, the Midlands, the North and Scotland.

Four of the new models are capable of removing soil from a 30m digging depth and are equipped with 1.55m³ buckets. The fifth has a 25m digging depth and 1.30m³ bucket. Leyland Trucks is to participate in a project designed to help UK operators make the transition to battery electric trucks. A total of 20 DAF LF Electric 19-tonne rigids, together with the required charging infrastructure, will be fitted with data logging equipment and used to support the UK Government’s Department for Transport (DfT) efforts to encourage the use of battery electric vehicles in commercial transport. An interactive website will inform future fleet operator buying decisions and help stimulate the sale of battery electric trucks.

To support operators in understanding the costs and considerations around the deployment of zero emission trucks, the DfT is adopting a proactive campaign to assist the road transport sector in its transition. The project is part of the Government’s £20 million zero emission road freight trials.

The project is delivered using the SBRI (Small Business Research Initiative), which is a process that brings together government challenges and ideas from business to create innovative solutions. Leyland Trucks will work with CENEX, the low carbon research consultancy, to create an interactive report and website using real-world data to assist public and private fleet operators to better understand the strengths, challenges and deployment options around zero emissions trucks.

Leyland Trucks manufactures the successful DAF LF series of distribution vehicles, including the LF Electric. GLS UPDATES ITS FLEET WITH 120 IVECO S-WAY LNG AND BIO-LNG POWERED VEHICLES GLS, one of the main express couriers in Italy, updates its fleet with a greater focus on environmental sustainability. Thanks to its partnership with IVECO, 120 new IVECO S-WAY LNG and Bio-LNG powered vehicles will join its fleet.

The new IVECO S-WAY vehicles, which will replace a diesel vehicle fleet made up of 70% Euro VI vehicles and 30% Euro V vehicles, will have a significantly positive impact on the environment. Using fossil methane will result in a reduction of CO2 amounting to -7300 tons, which would be equivalent to replacing 745 diesel vehicles with electric ones powered by 100% renewable energy, or planting 146,000 trees covering an area comparable to 487 football fields. With biomethane, this value increases exponentially, achieving a CO2 reduction of -78,000 tons, which is the equivalent of 8000 fewer cars or 1.5 million trees planted occupying an area equivalent to more than 5000 football fields.

This initiative is part of GLS’s broader Climate Protect Project, which aims to offset 100% of the emissions it produces by 2022 through certified offset programs and significantly reduce emissions by 2025 by using eco-friendly transportation systems, with electric/hybrid tractions for last-mile transport and tractions for long distance missions.

MECALAC UNVEILS MAJOR EVOLUTIONS TO ITS MDX SITE DUMPER RANGE Mecalac has announced a series of major upgrades to its site dumper portfolio including the all new six-tonne 6MDX and nine-tonne 9MDX models, fitted with optional state-of-the-art hydrostatic transmission and the availability of the Roll-Over Protective Structure (ROPS) foldable roll bar, making the cabin optional on these new models.

Widely used across the construction equipment industry, the adoption of hydrostatic transmission replaces mechanical transmission with fixed gear ratios. This ensures easier operations without gear shifting and provides the added benefit of responsive dynamic braking.

The addition of hydrostatic transmission improves operator comfort, thanks to smooth and controllable acceleration.

VOLVO CE INTRODUCES TWO NEW EXCAVATORS IN 50-TON CLASS SIZE giving it extra stability when working with heavier loads. The undercarriage on the EC530E, meanwhile, shares the same transportation dimensions as Volvo’s 48-ton EC480E. Both machines’ boom and arm boast a larger pin size for added strength. Also, like all Volvo excavators, both models are backed by the Volvo Lifetime Frame and Structure Warranty, which covers the frame, boom and arm for the entirety of the initial ownership period.

BRON - heavy equipment manufacturer - is in focus as their machines facilitate the installation of fibre optic cables and other underground products.

anadian heavy equipment manufacturer, RWF BRON, has been in business since 1974. In these 47 years, BRON has field tested their range of 21 products in numerous installations all dealing in different working conditions. The manufacturer, besides creating machines, also provides parts, reconditions used machines, has a range of pre-owned assets to choose from (for all budgets) and a sound after sales service programme that provides parts and service expertise to their dealers.

“We manufacture heavy equipment that specializes in the installation of underground products such as fibre optic cables, gas lines, water lines and conduit along with farm drainage tiles,” says Bill Burnet, Sales Manager at the company. Most of their equipment is sold through dealers worldwide. “The products we manufacture are of high quality enabling them to work in the most tough and challenging applications worldwide,” he continues.

The speed at which fibre optic cables are taking over from copper transmission cables has been gaining momentum for a while now. The Middle East remains the region with the highest fibre penetration (more than 90 percent) in the world led by Qatar and the UAE. All pointing to the need for BRON’s machines. “All of our utility products are sold through Vermeer Dealers worldwide,” says Burnet. Fibre optic cable installations are in high demand due to the 5G phone networks. “Our utility plows are designed for this application,” adds Burnet.

The BRON V-100 One of their popular products is the Utility Plow. The BRON V-100 is an Offsetting Add-on Vibratory Utility Plow that is designed for the installation of fibre optics, copper cables, conduits and pipes at depths of up to 72” underground. It is suited for a variety of ground conditions even in situations where tractor power is limited. The V-100 comes with custom backplates or mounting plates depending on the machine the plow will be mounted on.

It has an adjustable hydraulic blade which allows the operator to raise or lower the blade according to the depth of the operation. The blade also comes with two options of different sizes that are appropriate for the plow being used. One is the BRON Slant which has a limited slant and leaves a smaller window, the other option is the K-Line which has a more aggressive slant. The choice of blade is left to the contractor on the job.

The BRON TR450 The TR450 Wheel Trencher is apt for gas line and utility installations. The speed and maneuverability of this powerful machine leaves 40” to 50” smooth trenches in its wake. The design allows the machine to self-level itself. The hydraulic mainframe tilts the TR450 for perfect grading on slopes or unlevel ground. It has independently oscillating axles

that make ideal ground contact and give a smooth ride on rough terrains.

The BRON 585 Drainage Plow Providing all round visibility, plowing accuracy and operator comfort, the drainage plow balances power and agility. It comes with either a Cat C13B or a Cummins QSX15 diesel engine. It has a hydraulic blade lock - a combination of an internal and external hydraulic cylinder that fixes the blade in place at the required plowing depth. The operator can also remove the blade from its holder without any additional equipment.

Market demand “Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, most countries worldwide were either planning or in the process of fibre optic cable installations. The pandemic slowed most of the installations at the start but as of today are at full capacity on their projects,” says Burnet. However, parts supplier delays have led to a slowdown in BRON’s ability to produce their products.

“Right now, the demand for our products is very good and we anticipate this demand remaining high for the next three to five years,” he adds.

Product design and development

The machine comes with a power feeder that positions the drainage tile between a hydraulically adjustable drive and weight wheel and the feeder then guides the tile into the installation chute preventing stretching.

“Most of the design work we do today is complementary to our current product lines. By that I mean we design and manufacture installation chutes for single or multi product installations,” says Burnet.

The BRON VR4000 The BRON VR4000 Vibratory Ripper is built for dozers up to 1,200hp. It is designed to work on installations with compacted soil, shale, limestone rock and coal. It serves multiple industries such as mining, road construction and utility.

Each region has unique installation requirements for their products. “We gather information from the contractor through our dealers and design these attachments based on the information we receive. We then send the concept to the dealer to review with their customer and once they sign off on the concept, we begin the manufacturing process,” he says.

It weighs approximately 9,762 kilograms and has a maximum working depth of 48”. Its raised tooth ground clearance is 20” and the height of the mounted ripper from the top of the shank to the ground with both cylinders fully retracted is 151”.

Research and development are a large part of BRON’s growth strategy. Based on dealer and customer communication, they are always working on new products to deliver to market. As a result of their manufacturing competence, they have been

BRON’s drainage plows are considerably heavier and more robust and are customized based on the purchasers’ requirements.

At present though, BRON’s focus is on manufacturing their current models for the agricultural and utility markets. Given the fact that water, sewerage, electricity, dams, and natural gas all require machines for underground work, the company is busy fulfilling ongoing orders and has little time and resources to work on new models.

Communicating constantly with their dealers who provide feedback on the products, which are in use in different industries on a variety of terrains, gives BRON the understanding to make their machines more productive, easier to operate and to increase their reliability and longevity. “We keep up with the current offerings of main line construction equipment to see if there is a technological fit with our machines. I would not call it a focus, but we are always looking to improve,” he adds.

The global fibre optics market is expected to be worth $8.6 billion by the year 2027. With the current pandemic, the market was valued at $6.7 billion until 2020. Essential industries such as healthcare, telecommunication, defense, vehicle navigation, environmental sensing and monitoring are all increasingly demanding the use of high bandwidth communication and data transmission services. Consequently, Burnet is confident about the future. He says: “Our machines and attachments are currently in demand. Globally existing cellular networks are converting to 5G, and new cellular networks are currently being installed underground. Power lines are being moved underground. On the agricultural front, it has been proven that crop yields are significantly better when fields have had drainage tile systematically installed.

The world is moving forward at a very fast pace and heavy equipment is required to make that happen.”.

Service and support The manufacturer provides support for their utility products through their dealer network. Almost all their current products have telematics allowing BRON and their dealers the ability to diagnose product issues remotely. For their Self-Propelled Drainage plows, which are sold directly and primarily in North America, BRON has parts and service available to these

As a manufacturer of construction machinery, attachments, wear plates and components, the Turkish manufacturer has a stable client base of 285 companies from 37 countries around the world. The group’s clients are mostly around the European region but are also located in North and South America, Africa, and Asia. In the Middle East region, except for a couple of sales, they don’t have any other business so far.

Galen Group is keen on tapping into the immense potential this region has to offer and have signed on contracts with shippers that will facilitate sending their manufactured goods to companies located located in the Middle East. “Until the second half of 2021, we were focused more on the European market. We now have the right shipping partners to transport our machines and attachments to the Middle East region at very affordable prices. Frankly, we are looking for reliable long-term partners for the Middle East,” says Orkun Batuhan Yildiz, Export Manager at Galen Group.

Galen Group manufactures more than 200 different types of attachments and machines. The attachments are for demolition, construction machinery, snow removal, recycling, among others. Available in different sizes, buckets are another item they produce, which are suitable for recycling, loading and excavation. The group also manufactures boom arms that come in varying sizes and types including long reach, demolition and dredging.

The boom arm The boom arm is a special attachment with multiple uses such as for deep and long distance digging and dredging, slope shaping, settlement banks, cleaning pools or waterways. With the long reach attachment, the inner baffle plate gives the torsion arm extra force to withstand torsional strains.

The boom arm can be attached on a wide range of excavator models that have up to 10-200 metric tonnes (22,000 – 488,400 lbs) of operating weight. The long reach boom arm saves cost and time and maximises profits as it achieves 50 percent more digging depth and advanced reach than a standard boom.

The boom and arm are critical components of an excavator and require tight tolerance and precision. They are machined on state-of-the-art equipment to ensure sturdiness. The long reach boom arm is ideal for river and sea dredging on land or barge; for basement and deep foundation excavations; also, for marine wall construction among a host of other uses.

The design of this machine is comprehensively simulated, ensures integrity, and identifies potential stress and fatigue points. All surfaces are sandblasted, and it comes with marine grade epoxy paint as a primer.

The excavator bucket Galen Group’s excavator bucket is manufactured for different industries and hence the design varies depending on its usage. Having said that, all excavator bucket types share some common design features: buckets are made of Hardox 450 steel; they have diamond folded tops for higher structural strength; their double radius shape increases heel cavity and clearance and reduces friction and wear and tear; buckets come with overlapping plates which reduce stress in critical areas. Also, machines in the 20-70 tonnes range come equipped with rock buckets.

The heavy-duty bucket’s torque pipe provides maximum power and eliminates corner cracks and upper beam faults. Side cutting blades are preferred in rock and stone applications as the Hardox 450 grade steel with optimal thickness provides maximum wear resistance. It has three wear protection levels for more demanding applications, including inner wear belts, additional wear blocks (700 BHN) and side and blade covers.

Four reinforcing angles are used to strengthen machine connections and two mesh plates provide additional strength and evenly distribute stresses throughout the bucket.

The hydraulic crusher The hydraulic crusher, manufactured by the Galen Group, is designed to work in harmony with the company’s compact excavator. Hydraulic crushers give impressive results in a variety of crushing applications. Together with the Galen excavator and a variety of work tools and configurations, the hydraulic crusher provides consistent power and performance.

Medium and heavy-duty hydraulic crushers combine superior efficiency and performance with high durability and a low environmental impact. They are suitable for a wide range of carriers, such as wheeled and tracked excavators, backhoe and skid steer loaders and demolition robots.

The manufacturing plant Galen Group’s factory is built on an area of 16,000 sq. meters.

“We have an additional 4,000 sq. metres casting factory,” says Yildiz. “We have oxygen, plasma and laser cutting, borverk, lathe, bending, gas metal arc welding, radial and milling in our production unit. We do most of the processes in-house.”

Additionally, high quality scraps are sent to the casting factory that manufactures ground engaging tools. Excavator buckets and attachments are produced mostly in the main factory.

“Our customers are usually end-users like contractors, mining companies, infrastructure companies and traders. However, we have recently started working with distributors as well,” continues Yildiz.

Since most products are custom made, the first step of the production process is always determining the customer’s needs and the possibilities at hand. Solutions are then developed and put into production by the group’s R&D team, consisting of eight experienced mechanical engineers. Every stage of the production process is inspected by quality control engineers.

Getting the products to the customer’s warehouse is also a straightforward process. “In Turkey, shipping prices are really affordable, and we are constantly in talks with the shipping companies we work with for better prices,” concludes Yildiz.

In the face of the ongoing pandemic, there was a pause in the construction industry in 2020 due to restrictions which led to a 2.4 percent drop in earnings worldwide. This, however, led to a demand explosion once vaccines were rolled out and restrictions were not so strict on work sites. Hence, global growth in the construction industry output is projected to be 5.7 percent this year. From 2022 to 2025, global output growth is projected to average 3.7 percent per year.* Galen Group is well prepared for this process and has already increased production capacity. Research and development are also what sets Galen Group apart from other traditional manufacturers. “We have continuous product development, which allows us to produce more than 250 attachments. Currently the only challenge the company faces is providing the right kind of after-sales service. Yildiz says: “Although we have a team in some countries, it can be difficult to provide direct service. Based on the product, we sometimes manage to
