JOHNSON ARABIA PURCHASES NEW EQUIPMENT TO ITS FLEET

The equipment are in line with the current needs of having environmentally conscious machinery for projects that are trying to get LEED accreditation.

“As Dubai moved towards a more sustainable approach a lot of our clients were becoming conscious of emissions generated and we found out electrical AWPS were being sent out a lot more, so we had to ensure we improved our existing fleet to meet the market needs,” said Joe Keely, AWP Executive Manager.

Johnson Arabia recently purchased new equipment for their already large rental fleet in the UAE. The investments included a Liebherr – LTM 1450-8.1, two MAN tractors, JLG electric scissor lifts (R1932, R2632, R3246, R4045), JLG articulating boom lifts (450AJ, 660SJ, 860SJ, 1200SJP) and JLG electric boom lifts (EC600, EC450, EC520).

“As market leaders we constantly evaluate what our clients are hiring on a larger scale from us and what will have long term benefit to our fleet and that is why we have decided to invest in so many new machines,” said Managing Director Martin Kirby.

“This is the Same with our 450 tone Liebherr which has ECOmode so that the mobile crane’s fuel consumption is reduced by up to 10% in addition to its massive lifting capabilities,” added Mohammad Fareed, Crane Executive Manager.

In addition, the two MAN tractors that were added to the fleet of existing trucks will also allow for Johnson Arabia to have more control over the logistics and transportation of their equipment whereby they will have full control over equipment delivery times and help service clients better with no external delay..

Ritchie Bros. Middle East recently hosted another online Timed Auction event in November with aims to complete five online auctions for the year of 2022. This choice was made considering the company’s successful June auction, which saw over 1,800 products go to online purchasers all around the world and had the biggest turnout of buyers and sellers in the May/June auctions during the previous five years.

NOVEMBER AUCTION

Companies with an excess of equipment assets require regular market access and various asset disposition methods. Yet, timing is everything. The selling price will be affected by where, how, and when asset owners can sell. Thus, companies do not have to wait long for results now that Ritchie Bros. has added a fifth unreserved online auction in Dubai in November.

Following the switch to purely online auctions and markets, Ritchie Bros.’ cutting-edge digital equipment disposal infrastructure enables the business to enhance the number of online auctions staged yearly. The decision to increase the number of online auctions from four to five each year demonstrates the effectiveness of this digital transformation approach in practice.

For 2022, Ritchie Bros. hosted online auctions in March, June, September, and November with plans to conclude the year with a December auction..

KIZAD TO WELCOME ABU DHABI’S FIRST ELECTRIC VEHICLES ASSEMBLY FACILITY

GENERAL MOTORS SIGNS MOU WITH AL WEGDANIYAH TRANSPORT SOLUTIONS

General Motors Middle East announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Al Wegdaniya Transport to explore electric vehicle (EV) leasing opportunities. The MoU reinforces the mutual commitment to bring electrification to all modes of transport.

KIZAD, part of AD Ports Group’s Economic Cities & Free Zones, announced the signing of a lease agreement with NWTN to establish an Electric Vehicle (EV) assembly facility in Abu Dhabi to serve growing demand for sustainable transport options.

Founded in 2016, green mobility technology company NWTN has its headquarters in the UAE and aims to produce Smart Passenger Vehicles (SPV) that deploy AI technologies and personalised passenger experiences.

Under the agreement, NWTN plans to initially operate a 25,000 m2 manufacturing, research and development, vehicle testing and logistics facility constructed by KIZAD with an annual capacity of 5,000-10,000 units for the assembly of semi-knocked-down (SKD) Electric Vehicles. In phase two, NWTN plans to introduce several new Electric Vehicle models and expand capacity to 50,000 units annually.

Set to be the first assembly facility for Electric Vehicles in Abu Dhabi, the announcement follows recent regulatory updates by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) that seek to accelerate the development of Electric Vehicle infrastructure as part of Abu Dhabi’s Low Emission Vehicle Strategy. The new production facility is also well aligned with UAE Net-Zero by 2050 agenda as it will strengthen industry expertise and increase the availability of lowemission vehicles in the UAE.

With its new facility in KIZAD, NWTN will benefit from proximity to AD Ports Group’s expansive automobile business ecosystem, which includes existing and upcoming projects tailored to the Automotive sector such as the region’s first lithium production facility by Lepidico Ltd, the Regional Auto Hub – Abu Dhabi and the Khalifa Port Auto Terminal..

Among the leading UAE based SMEs in the mobility space, Al Wegdaniyah Transport Solutions is specialized in providing transport solutions to corporate clients. The agreement serves the demand for EV leasing from across Al Wegdaniya Transport’s clientele spanning government and corporate entities and will guide how the growing demand for electrification is addressed, while opening doors for wider collaboration. Through this partnership, Al Wegdaniya Transport, a winner of the Best Transportation & Logistics Business at the MBR Awards for Young Businesses, is the latest to join a diverse cohort of GM partners, ultimately reaffirming the automaker’s commitment to driving the future of mobility and mass adoption of EVs.

The MoU allows for GM’s highly anticipated upcoming EVs to be incorporated within the leasing conversation as these go live, spanning the likes of the Chevrolet Bolt EUV, Cadillac LYRIQ, GMC HUMMER EV and Chevrolet Blazer EV, within the GM umbrella. The collaboration will also capitalize on General Motors pioneering connected car solution, OnStar. Through early exploration of leasing with local entities, GM will be able to identify new avenues of engagement with a wider audience..

GENIE S-80 J TELESCOPIC BOOM LIFT ON DISPLAY DURING MIDDLE EAST DEMO TOUR

In May 2022, eight Middle East access hire companies had a chance to see the S-80 J first-hand, and in-person during Genie’s UAE S-80 J Demo Tour. During the event, Genie team members provided demos that highlighted the quality and capabilities of the S-80 J boom lift, shared information about how the boom could help rental companies maximize their profitability, and answered questions about the boom’s features.

“There’s nothing like getting a chance to see and operate a piece of machinery up close and in-person, which is why the Genie team was so excited to get a chance to meet with our customers in this type of format,” said Sharbel Kordahi, Genie Managing Director & Sales Director for the Middle East region. “We received such positive feedback from participants that we are looking into the possibility of expanding it to other markets in the Middle East region.”

Following the event participants shared their appreciation for both the demo tour format, and excitement about the benefits the S-80 J boom could deliver for their fleets.

“The demo was well organized and well balanced between an in-class presentation of the machine and a hands-on demo and technical explanation of the S-80 J,” said Robert Cavaleri, Regional Training, Safety and Compliance Manager at Manlift Middle East LLC. “Our team enjoyed the possibility of giving feedback to the Genie team on the machine, and that they took it seriously.”

“The reduced TCO is definitely a game changer, especially in the mid-sized booms that are challenged on rental rates. I will be able to improve my ROI and also differentiate the XC range with a better rental rate,” said Mark Pilford, Regional Operations Manager at Access Rental Gulf.

The Genie S-80 J boom lift features a leading unrestricted platform capacity of 300kb, 16.8m of horizontal reach for access at the top of the envelope, and a 1.8m jib, making it well suited for nearly all work-at-height tasks in the 80ft range, including general construction, maintenance, inspection and painting. A single-envelope, optimized design reduces overall inspection points and wearable components, speeding up inspections and reducing the time and expense of maintenance and repairs, resulting in a lower total cost of ownership. .

EYES ON THE PRIZE

Mahmoud Ayoub, Sales Manager at Masaha Equipment Co., tells James Morgan how he plans to lead his team to market dominance within Kuwait’s machinery sector during the next five years.
MIDDLE EAST NEWS - COVER STORY 20

The post-pandemic recovery of Kuwait’s heavy machinery market appears to be in full swing. According to a 2022 report from Arizton Advisory and Intelligence, the country’s construction equipment sector is expected to achieve a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 5.5% during the period 202228, reaching a market value of $450 million by the end of the period.

Such figures indicate this could be a propitious juncture for dealers looking to grow their market share. Mahmoud Ayoub certainly thinks so. With more than two decades of industry experience, having worked for a variety of international construction machinery brands, he joined Masaha Equipment Co. as Sales Manager in March 2022 and has already witnessed an uptick in orders.

“When I joined Masaha earlier this year, the market was still down following the pandemic,” Ayoub tells Plant & Equipment. “Traditionally, Masaha has specialised in the rental space and this segment never dies. However, this is not true of heavy equipment sales, which almost halted in Kuwait during the global pandemic.”

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - COVER STORY www.PlantAndEquipment.com 21

As an authorized dealer for China-headquartered manufacturing giant, SANY, Masaha’s status as Kuwait’s leading supplier of rental equipment has enabled it to weather the postpandemic storm better than most. Encouragingly, Ayoub is now seeing the company’s sales head in the same direction.

“We are now performing well, especially within segments such as heavy-lift cranes, excavators and wheel loaders,” he says. “We have also witnessed solid demand from the oil and gas sector for SANY motor graders, thanks to the ongoing soil remediation efforts in Kuwait. Since June, sales have been much better than they were previously.”

But what elements of Masaha’s operations have facilitated this improvement? According to Ayoub, a combination of strong infrastructure, a high-quality manufacturing partner and visionary leadership has enabled the company to grow its sales business faster than the competition.

“Masaha has all the foundations necessary to succeed,” Ayoub says. “But it’s not only about succeeding; our team’s goal is to lead the market, and the company’s owners are fully supportive of this ambition. Our product offering and facilities are second to none. We have superior equipment in the form of SANY, we are establishing a talented team of experienced sales and service engineers, and we are building a brand-new workshop.

SANY has developed an enviable reputation for quality and value during the past decade, competing on an equal footing with the most established global names in the industry. Given Ayoub’s experience with other industry-leading brands, does he think the manufacturer has achieved parity with its international rivals?

Some manufacturers sell their equipment on price only,” he explains. “They offer lower-quality products to keep costs low. SANY, on the other hand, already possessed extensive production capabilities and experience in China, having built a reputation for extremely high-quality products at competitive prices. In other words, genuine value. When it comes to quality, we are competing on the global stage.”

Mahmoud Ayoub joined Masaha Equipment Co. as Sales Manager earlier this year.
MIDDLE EAST NEWS - COVER STORY

Indeed, as Ayoub highlights, the manufacturer is already outperforming international brands within certain segments, both in terms of quality and sales. “SANY is number one in the world when it comes to excavators,” he says. “In this space, the quality of its models has surpassed that of other brands by some distance. At Masaha, we can see that all SANY models are following the same trajectory. That’s why we know we have the right products to become Kuwait’s market leader for equipment sales, just as we are for rental.”

Ayoub and his team have developed a five-year strategy to achieve this ambitious goal. They plan to take the number-one

spot within the coming two years before growing their market share over the subsequent three-year period. So, what are the cornerstones of this strategy?

“Firstly, we need to identify the equipment that will be needed in Kuwait based on our customers’ project requirements,” he explains. “It’s vital that we fully understand the specifications of the machinery that will be in demand. Secondly, we will focus on maximizing our market coverage. This is important as we need to be in a position to reach all prospective customers operating in Kuwait. Finally, we will continue to develop an experienced sales force. If we achieve all three, I am confident that we will establish Masaha as Kuwait’s leading equipment seller.”

Ayoub is understandably pleased with Masaha’s sales performance in H2 2022, but what about next year? Does he expect this upwards sales trajectory to continue?

“Yes, because we are visiting our customers on a daily basis and our prospects are looking promising,” he concludes. “Sales is about information; the more information you have, the more units you will sell. We expect new projects to be announced in Q1 2023, with mobilization commencing during the following quarter. So, from Q2 2023 through to the end of the year, I think there is significant potential. We are preparing now by placing orders for stock and strengthening our sales team. In collaboration with SANY, we are getting ready to meet increased demand.”.

IN FOR THE LONG RUN

A stalwart in the construction machinery supply industry in Dubai, UAE, and the Middle East region, Construction Machinery Center has made a name for itself based purely on its after-sales service. When customers stay on for decades, it’s only due to the quality of products and service.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - PROFILE 24

Construction Machinery Center (CMC) was founded in 1973 and today it is a part of the RTS Investments Group. At the time, the construction machinery market in the UAE did not have any real supply, service and aftermarket support solutions. CMC started off with a few branded machines but with a dedicated team for its after-sales and parts division. From the start, the intention was to provide solutions and as their stellar service programme became evident, the machinery brands started coming in along with the customers.

Ziad Hamade, General Manager at Construction Machinery Center, says: “The company started with a total headcount of 30 employees working in the Sales, Marketing, After Sales and Parts departments. There was a lot to learn in those days, the market was also small and hence the focus was more on training and teaching the staff.” At the time, CMC was the first to introduce the mobile stationery equipment machines for pumping concrete. This gave the company an edge over others in the market and proved to be a boost for its future from there.

Today, CMC has all the established construction machinery brands in its portfolio - Ammann, Lissmac, Sunward, Silla, Rockwheel, Terex trucks, Chicago Pneumatic, Pramac, Doosan and Komptech to name a few. “For us at CMC, it’s always about supporting the customer after the purchase. After-sales is our niche,” shares Hamade. Once the deal is done by the sales team, CMC’s after-sales (both the parts and the service team) is what essentially brings in the repeat orders. “A good brand is identified only after the sale is conducted. The brand’s professional approach, troubleshooting, and parts availability are the main factors for a success story,” he adds.

CMC provides essential equipment for the construction industry in the UAE (their biggest market in the region) and the Middle East. They have construction machinery, concrete equipment, crushing plants, concrete batching plants, material handling equipment, oil field equipment, industrial air compressors, agriculture equipment, airport equipment and power generators. The company works on long term growth agreements with their partners/suppliers and not on short term/high profit goals. Most of the companies they are working with have been with CMC for 40 years or more.

Currently the construction market has gained ground after a rather discouraging two years. “There was a lot of static in the market during the pandemic. It proved to be a good thing for demand, though. Because even though fuel prices were higher, in the local market there were many announcements and initiation of new projects,” says Hamade. Prices from suppliers within Europe, USA, and China were higher which meant a more expensive product for the end user. “The demand prevailed eventually. It was higher than the previous years although the cost for the consumers had increased.”

The pandemic wasn’t good for business, but CMC saw an opportunity to diversify and acquired the marketing and sales distribution rights for a leading material handling manufacturer. This new partnership covered up for the low sales from the construction market. “Since then, we are diversifying our offering to target more sectors connected with construction,” continues Hamade.

ACE systems with various capacities are available. All provide cost-saving efficiencies. Service and maintenance points are easy to reach, as are fluid ports. The service team will be able to make quicker, more efficient work of preventive

maintenance. Plus on many models the operator’s station extends beyond the frame for improved views of the drum, surface and spray system. All models utilise a rotating seat that helps the operator see out the front and back. Tandem rollers are designed and engineered for easy operation. That includes the location of controls, an easy-to-see operator display, drive levers, visibility and easy adjustment of amplitude and frequency.

• LISSMAC: Floor Saws, Masonry Saws and Band Saws. The Lissmac Floor Saw is useful in robust and compact construction. Comes in a closed, solid frame. The smooth raising and lowering of the saw blade with a closed threaded spindle prevent damaging the saw blade. It comes with an adjustable cutting depth indicator for all saw blade diameters. It has a large 33 litre capacity water tank which reduces work interruptions. The watercooling system provides optimum saw blade cooling, this guarantees a longer saw blade life. It has an easily detachable saw blade cover.

levels including durability and reliability. The robust build has been retained, and operator comfort levels have been maintained as high design priorities. These hard-working engine powered forklifts will meet the toughest challenges that customers throw at them including ramps, grades and rough underfoot conditions. Whether loading stacks, packing racks or stuffing trucks, they are guaranteed to impress both operators and operation’s personnel with its power, performance and productivity.

Power & Air Solutions:

• Chicago Pneumatic: Compressors 175 – 850 CFM. These units are an excellent partner for pneumatic tools such as rock drills, breakers, air guns, wrenches, dewatering pumps, and abrasive blasting equipment. They can also provide backup power on the jobsite during power cuts and electrical failures. Canopy doors open and out of the way for convenient routine maintenance. Asymmetric rotors allow for increased efficiency. In addition, a low rotor speed and few moving parts minimise wear and tear for reliable performance and long service life. A high performance two-stage air intake filter prevents dust and dirt particles from entering the compressor and engine. A service indicator on the filter tells you when it needs replacement.

Having the number of machines CMC has in store and with its customers requires a large in-house service and maintenance team. Their large inventory is stored in a 200,000 sq foot, covered, temperature controlled, state-of-the-art warehouse. The service division is equipped with all the latest maintenance and care technology. “The extreme weather and high temperatures are the worst enemies of our inventory,” adds Hamade.

CMC doesn’t have a seller/buyer mentality. “Our clients are our long-term partners; our duty is to give the correct advice and provide the right solutions. It makes us happy when our partners have a fleet of operational machines supplied by us for years and they come back to try the new modified versions,” adds Hamade.

CMC has several service plans which are all tailored as per the client’s needs. “Large organisations usually have their own service teams and hence do not require our maintenance programs. Smaller organisations usually like our support, so we make it a part of the total package,” concludes Hamade..

ACT aims to lead the crane business in Saudi Arabia with the new LTM 1650-8.1. FIRST LIEBHERR LTM 1650-8.1 IN SAUDI ARABIA GOES TO ACT MIDDLE EAST NEWS 32

Crane and heavy lifting company, Arabian Consolidated Trading Est. (ACT), has become the first company in Saudi Arabia to take delivery of a Liebherr LTM 1650-8.1 mobile crane. The company previously reported positive experiences with its predecessor model, the Liebherr LTM 1500-8.1.

The LTM 1650-8.1 is expected to set new standards in the Saudi Arabian crane market. ACT opted for the full equipment package including both telescopic boom lengths, 54 and 80 metres, at the time of purchase. Having enjoyed a good business relationship with Liebherr since 1987, ACT has full confidence in Liebherr’s service organisation and crane technology.

“The LTM 1500-8.1 is a proven crane within the ACT Group that has also impressed our customers,” says Hassan

Mohammed Rashid Al-Naimi, Founder and President of ACT. The new LTM 1650-8.1 outperforms its predecessor by 15 to 50 percent in terms of load capacity – depending on the equipment. “We wanted to have Saudi Arabia’s first LTM 1650-8.1. ACT has always been a pioneer and has set standards in the crane business in Saudi Arabia. And we have now done this once again with the new 700-tonne crane,” explains Al-Naimi.

Full package with two boom variants

At ACT it is standard practice to buy fully equipped cranes – the Saudi Arabian company therefore did likewise when purchasing the LTM 1650-8.1, acquiring both telescopic boom lengths in the process. The new crane can be equipped with a 54 or 80-metre boom. To switch between them, only the

MIDDLE EAST NEWS www.PlantAndEquipment.com 33

corresponding telescopic sections must be changed, rather than the entire boom. This option allows the advantages of both boom variants to be exploited. The 80-metre boom offers large hoist heights and radii, making ACT’s new 700-tonne crane suitable for jobs that fall between the capabilities of the LTM 1500-8.1 and the LTM 11200-9.1.

The 54-metre telescopic boom offers advantages in terms of mobility, allowing the crane to travel on the road with the front supports and a twelve-tonne axle load. To minimise the set-up time, however, the rear supports are installed as complete support boxes in a single hoist and connected using quick couplings. “We need a fast crane, a so-called taxi crane. The LTM 1650-8.1 is easy to mobilise. This is important for emergency maintenance work in the refineries, where we only have four hours to set up for shutdown work. The new 700-tonne crane is the best choice here,” explains Al-Naimi.

High level of satisfaction

The technical aspects of Liebherr cranes are highly valued by ACT. “Generally speaking, everyone here at ACT is convinced by the standards Liebherr sets each time they launch a new product,” says Al-Naimi. This satisfaction with Liebherr cranes also extends to ACT’s customers. “Our customer Aramco is very satisfied with Liebherr in the field of refinery maintenance and shutdown work in particular,” explains Al-Naimi. This is also where the main application areas for ACT’s new LTM 1650-8.1 lie. Liebherr’s fast and reliable service is crucial for ACT, since it keeps crane downtime to a minimum.

Close business relations

ACT purchased its first Liebherr crane in 1987. “Willi Liebherr’s visit to our site in 1992 strengthened our business relationship even further,” says Al-Naimi. “Apart from our partnership, we are very satisfied with Liebherr’s service and local presence in Saudi Arabia. This is also the reason why our customers prefer Liebherr for these types of large orders.”

The crane and heavy-duty company Arabian Consolidated Trading Est was founded in Saudi Arabia in 1986 and has grown steadily ever since. Besides its many years of experience in the area of crane and heavy-duty equipment rental, the company also focuses on modernisation measures. In total, Arabian Consolidated Trading Est operates 238 cranes, 180 of which were manufactured by Liebherr.

Headquartered in Jubail, the company has offices in Dubai, Riyadh, Dammam and Yanbu and employs a total of 1,000 people. The company’s focus is on crane rental and operations in refinery maintenance and decommissioning..

THE BIGGER THE BETTER

Machinery experts from Komatsu and LiuGong speak to Plant & Equipment about existing and predicted levels of demand for bulldozers in the Middle East.
MIDDLE EAST NEWS - BULLDOZERS 36

The global bulldozer market reached $4.4 billion in 2021, according to research published by IMARC Group, and is expected to hit $6.5 billion by 2027. If achieved, this trajectory will entail an impressive compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.4% during the period.

As a region renowned for its ambitious, large-scale developments, there has always been a need for effective and dependable bulldozers in the Middle East. Indeed, GCC-based construction professionals have been known to remark that Dubai was built with a Caterpillar D9 and a Toyota Land Cruiser. While such comments are obviously intended to be tongue-in-cheek, they contain at least a kernel of truth. While the Gulf’s modern metropolises may

be known for their high-tech construction methodologies, the megastructures that populate the cities of today simply wouldn’t have been possible without assistance from the humble bulldozer.

But while the bulldozers of old may have been seen as blunt instruments, to tar today’s models with the same brush would be both inaccurate and unfair. As Yuki Sugiya, Manager of Product Marketing at Komatsu Middle East, tells James Morgan, there has been significant innovation within this segment since people began building futuristic cityscapes in the desert.

“Komatsu has been doing business in the Middle East since the 1960s, and we believe that our customers appreciate

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - BULLDOZERS www.PlantAndEquipment.com 37

our accumulated experience and continuous quality improvements,” Sugiya explains. “Demand for Komatsu bulldozers has continued to grow over the past few years, and we expect this trend to persist into the future. Large-scale dozers such as the Komatsu D155, D275, D375 and D475 are very popular across the region, and high levels of demand have helped our team to steadily increase its sales volume.”

Li Yi, General Manager of LiuGong Africa Middle East, is also keen to emphasise the importance of iterative improvements

within the segment of earthmoving machinery, noting that the Japan-headquartered manufacturer’s competitiveness stems from continuous innovation. “In the coming year, LiuGong will launch new bulldozer models in the Middle East, as well as loaders and excavators, further enhancing its customer experience, helping users to complete their work more efficiently, and creating more value together,” he says.

“LiuGong also plans to further strengthen its service capabilities in the region, expanding the parts warehouse networks of its subsidiaries and improving component reserves,” Yi adds. “As part of this strategy, our company will also establish its own parts warehouses and service teams in certain markets, bringing us closer to our customers and enabling us to deliver the support they require.”

The Middle East’s bulldozer segment certainly seems to be in rude health, but which markets and industries feature most commonly in manufacturers’ order books at present?

“We believe the market is being driven by growing demand in the UAE and Saudi Arabia,” Sugiya says. “The Komatsu D155, for instance, is used by many customers in the Emirates as a ‘standard’ for earthmoving machinery, regardless of the worksite –from rocky terrain to desert landscaping.”

38
Li Yi, General Manager of LiuGong Africa Middle East.
MIDDLE EAST NEWS - BULLDOZERS

Commenting on the sectors that are currently driving demand, Yi says: “Infrastructure, construction and oilfield service projects in the Middle East represent the main customers for LiuGong bulldozers. Our machines are ideally suited to these types of projects. We have seen a solid increase in sales in the Middle East market over the past year, especially in Saudi Arabia.

“With 330 HP, the LiuGong CLGB320 is our most popular bulldozer in the Middle East at present,” he continues. “We launched this model more than a decade ago and, thanks to continuous improvement and adaptability, it is well placed to meet the needs of end users working in the region’s harsh operating environment. More than 200 of these bulldozers are currently in the hands of our customers across the Middle East.”

Sugiya reports a similarly positive trajectory for Komatsu. “Our past results have been very good,” he explains. “Like others, we are benefiting from increased demand in various GCC countries thanks to the prevalence of large-scale projects. The Middle East has among the highest levels of bulldozer demand in the world, which is why Komatsu is continuing to receive enquiries from customers across the region.”

So, what should bulldozer manufacturers and dealers expect from the region during the coming years?

Will Gulf-based customers continue to fill the order books of earthmover manufacturers over the longer term?

“In the future, with the rise of large-scale infrastructure in the Middle East market, LiuGong expects demand for earthmoving machinery – including bulldozers – to increase significantly,” Yi concludes. “However, competition within this segment will also become more intense. Only brands capable of delivering performance, efficiency, high-quality aftersales support and value will stand out in the market.”.

STIHL OPENS NEW SUBSIDIARY IN KENYA

STIHL laid the foundations for further growth and clearly demonstrating its commitment to the important African market. The company has opened its second subsidiary on the African continent in Kenya and celebrated the 25th anniversary of its subsidiary in South Africa.

“Africa is an important market for STIHL, and we look forward to growing with both our business and our dealer network on this continent,” said Norbert Pick, STIHL’s Executive Board Member for Marketing and Sales.

An office was set up in Kenya in 2017 with the aim of offering training and product demonstrations, especially for agricultural cooperatives. A roughly 1,000 square-metre office between the airport and the centre of Nairobi was rented and extensively renovated, and has now been officially opened. Sebastian Groth, the German ambassador to Kenya, joined the ceremony in person. The new subsidiary currently employs 16 people and supplies STIHL products to the dealer network in Kenya, as well as in Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, South Sudan and Ethiopia. An additional warehouse in Nairobi is operated by Fargo Courier, an external logistics provider.

The South African subsidiary ANDREAS STIHL Ltd. in Pietermaritzburg has celebrated its 25th anniversary following

a one-year delay due to the pandemic and other causes. In June 2021, the company’s warehouse was completely destroyed and the administrative building suffered significant damage during the riots and looting in the area around the port city of Durban. STIHL immediately put together a crisis team and set up a temporary warehouse in Johannesburg, while a building in Pietermaritzburg was rented to house the offices.

STIHL established an office in Pietermaritzburg in 1996 and began expanding the company’s market presence in Africa. STIHL South Africa currently has 39 employees..

SARENS TILTS AND INSTALLS STEEL METRO COLUMNS IN EGYPT

Since May, Sarens has been on site at the Remaya metro station in Giza, Egypt, where the CC2600H and CC600 have been lifting and installing 70-tonne steel columns for the station. Sarens conducted the work on behalf of their client Hassan Allam.

To prepare for the lifting and installation work, Sarens considered the number of steel columns and their locations within a relatively tight worksite. Exact planning was paramount to safely assembling the equipment as well as for tilting, crawling, and slewing operations during execution.

To lift the columns, Sarens used the CC2600H crawler crane with 54-metre main boom, as well as the CC600 crawler crane with 36-metre main boom. The CC2600 was brought in from another completed project, while the CC600 arrived directly from the Sarens yard. It then took two days to set up the equipment.

The two cranes have been working to lift several steel columns for the metro station, performing 14 picks in three months at a height of two metres. The six-member crew has been performing the project work steadily and with no interruptions or breakdowns, pausing only for regular maintenance work on the cranes. .

VOLVO TRUCKS SOUTH AFRICA PLANT STARTS EURO

ASSEMBLY

Volvo Trucks South Africa has started assembly of Euro 5 specification trucks at its plant in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. Euro 5 variants have been available in South Africa since 2012, but for the first time, they will now be assembled locally.

Euro 5 assembly at the plant does not come at the expense of the production of the company’s current range, it is complimentary. Volvo Trucks initially started with the assembly of Euro 5 level FH truck-tractors, the company’s long-haul icon, as this is the model that customers are asking for. More models and configurations will be added over time as fleet owners require them.

Certain layout changes were made to the facility to accommodate AdBlue filling in trucks, as well as for storage. Additional floor layout adjustments were also done to allow for new procedures like the assembly of AdBlue tanks and special exhaust systems.

The Volvo Trucks plant has also recently installed a new solar power system to generate renewable energy for the facility. A total of 440 solar panels and two solar inverters will generate 243kW of power - approximately 60% of the energy needed for the plant.

Enhanced safety features

FUSO Trucks, made no compromises when it comes to standard safety features in the new FUSO TV33-400S 6x4 truck tractor. The truck is fully equipped with an ABS air brake system and auxiliary exhaust brake, providing excellent support for safe driving.

Additionally, the new vehicle has further enhanced safety through the design of the cab as it proudly complies with the most stringent ECE R29 version cab strength regulations that involve two cab tests – front impact, static roof strength and an optional impact test on the cab’s rear wall.

Aerodynamic cab

The new model offers outstanding fuel consumption through its finely crafted aerodynamic cab design with the aim of minimising air drag. Visibility on the new truck has also been enhanced, owing to the distinctively looking dual chamber headlamp with LED daytime running light. The LED daytime running lights increases road presence and improves safety.

Further improvement on the truck is the electrical cab tilt which provides effortless operation – easy to lift and wide access to the engine bay for easy maintenance.

All inspection and maintenance points are easy to find and access, thanks to the front service flap which ensures the vehicle is in optimal operating condition and on the road where it belongs.

Cab interior design has always been one of FUSO Trucks’ key focus areas to meet the driver’s increasing needs. Its

ergonomically designed interiors and features enhance driving pleasure and considerably reduce fatigue.

A prime example is the intelligent instrument cluster a multiinformation display. This exceptional feature provides useful information like coolant temperature, ambient temperature, engine run hours, average speed, fuel efficiency DTE, and gear indicator.

Furthermore, a lot of attention to detail in the new vehicle also went into the sleeper cab, which has been designed to make drivers feel at home while on the road, reduce driver fatigue and maximise productivity.

SMALL MACHINES, MASSIVE POTENTIAL

Bobcat and Sunward speak to James Morgan about growing demand for mini excavators in African markets.
AFRICA NEWS - MINI EXCAVATORS 52

The equipment may be small but don’t let that fool you. Compact diggers represent big business on the international stage. The global market value for mini excavators was estimated to be in the region of $6.5 billion in 2020, according to ResearchAndMarkets.com. This figure is expected to grow to more than $10 billion by 2030, representing a healthy compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.4% during the period.

Countries in Africa have not traditionally been known as highdemand markets for mini excavators, instead favouring larger construction equipment. Historically, compact machinery has proved more popular in regions that feature a higher prevalence of confined job sites.

While Bob Xie, Middle East Country Manager for Sunward, says that Europe remains the primary market for his employer’s compact machinery, and demand for largescale equipment is also growing, he notes that the Chinaheadquartered manufacturer is witnessing orders from mini excavator converts in Algeria and Morocco.

“In African markets, Sunward mini excavators are mainly used in sectors such as telecommunications, infrastructure

and small-scale projects,” he tells Plant & Equipment. “We see the same industries driving demand for these units in other regions too. Elsewhere in Africa, Sunward’s larger equipment tends to be in highest demand. We mainly export lines such as cranes, excavators and drilling rigs to this region.”

Nicolas Dumont, District Sales Manager – Africa at USheadquartered Bobcat, says that while the global pandemic had an adverse impact on mini excavator orders in Africa – as was the case for most segments and regions – things appear to be back on track.

“Demand for mini excavators in Africa has fully recovered from pre-Covid times, and the industry is now at the same level as it was in 2018,” he explains. “Half of the mini excavator demand in the region is being generated by South Africa, where overall demand for these machines doubled from January to August of this year compared to the corresponding period of 2021.

“From a volume perspective, Bobcat’s top sellers are in the 4-5-tonne and 5-6-tonne segments, with high demand for the E50z and E55z models, respectively,” says Dumont. “The new R2-Series generations of these models were launched in 2021 and have been very well received by the market.”

AFRICA NEWS - MINI EXCAVATORS www.PlantAndEquipment.com 53

When it comes to keeping pace with demand among customers in Africa, Xie points out that high-quality products and aftersales support are key considerations for Sunward. “Our machines’ components come from globally reputable suppliers,” he explains. “This is also the case with our engines, which are mostly Yanmar units at present. At the same time, our pricing is far more competitive than many of our European counterparts. So, both the quality and cost-effectiveness of Sunward machinery are appealing to customers.

“Then there is the matter of aftersales support,” Xie continues. “Sunward has dealers in more than 20 African countries,

including Algeria, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa, which have responsibility for the servicing of our machinery and the supply of spare parts. We work closely with our local dealers to ensure our customers’ expectations are met.”

Dumont and his team continue to work diligently to strengthen Bobcat’s already impressive footprint in the region. “Most of our dealers in Africa are multi-brand, so we are working hard to keep them focused on Bobcat and its products,” he says. “Full-time support, flexibility and reactivity are key when it comes to keeping our partners motivated to fight for the brand.

“We have also joined forces with a number of new dealers in the region,” Dumont adds. “At the end of 2019, Bobcat appointed Rock Plant as its authorised dealer for Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Then, at the end of 2020, we appointed Sodim TP in Gabon. In late 2021 and early 2022, we added two more dealers: Machinery Exchange in Zimbabwe and Albadri Power in Sudan.

“The combination of our increased focus on existing dealers and the addition of new partners in African markets has led to Bobcat’s performance continuing to improve in 2022,” says Dumont. “We expect this trend to continue into next year as we already have expansion plans for West and Central Africa.”

In terms of new mini excavator models, Sunward is constantly looking at ways to strengthen its mini excavator range for

customers in Africa and beyond. “We continue to update our mini excavator offering annually,” says Xie, adding that his team showcased a range of the manufacturer’s latest additions during bauma 2022 in Munich, Germany.

Innovation has represented an equally important focus for Bobcat of late, as Dumont explains. “In 2021, we introduced the E50z and E55z R2-Series, which feature dedicated engines with mechanical injection for African markets,” Dumont explains. “Mechanical engines really are a must in this region as they are capable of dealing with poor-quality fuel with high levels of sulphur, water and dust. The fact that Bobcat offers machinery with dedicated mechanical engines, which can be easily maintained and repaired by local mechanics, really gives us a competitive advantage in African markets.”

So, how do Sunward and Bobcat expect demand to evolve over the coming year?

“In Africa, I think we can expect significant development in a number of markets, including but not limited to countries such as Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria and South Africa,” says Xie.

Dumont also predicts that the region’s upward trajectory to continue. “Year after year, we are seeing the mini excavator demand evolving in Africa,” he says. “This is still a low-volume product in the region but customers are not willing to wait months for their machines to arrive. The dealers of both Bobcat and its competitors understand this, which is why more and

more of them are holding mini excavator stock. This is a sign of increased interest and the long-term potential of this product.

“At the moment, the backhoe loader is still very much preferred by African customers but we are starting to see some countries shift towards mini excavators, as happened many years ago in Europe. It will take many more years for this shift to complete in Africa but the long-term potential for mini excavators in this region is clearly huge. Bobcat is working to ensure that its employees and dealers are ready for this change,” Dumont concludes..

NEW ADDITIONS

NORDIC CRANE BUYS FIVE GROVE FIVEAXLE CRANES

Scandinavian rental company Nordic Crane has taken delivery of five new Grove all-terrain cranes – all fiveaxle units – to supplement its regional fleet. Four are based at the company’s Norwegian operations, while one is at the company’s Swedish facility. There are two 150t capacity GMK5150L-1 cranes and three 250t capacity GMK5250XL-1 cranes. The crane in Sweden is a GMK5250XL-1.

At 78.5m, the GMK5250XL-1 has the longest main boom in its class. For extra reach, Nordic Crane selected the 17.8m bi-fold swingaway jib (with integrated heavy-duty jib) for its cranes. The company also added the auxiliary hoist to the cranes, allowing them to use two hooks for tasks such as rotating precast elements during construction. With up to 80t of counterweight and a load chart that includes the ability to lift 9.9t out to 22m, the GMK5250XL-1 offers excellent lifting capabilities.

Hiab has received a significant order for EUR 7.5 million for HIAB iX.2758 RAIL super heavy loader cranes including installation and five years ProCare service agreements with warranty extension by Tecnove. The order was booked in Cargotec’s Q3 order intake with deliveries scheduled to start in the second half of 2023.

The super heavy cranes are the biggest HIAB cranes ever and will be installed on Tecnove designed trucks, a leader in the manufacture, transformation and maintenance of bodywork and special vehicles, and will be used by a Spanish rail organisation.

The HIAB iX.2758 RAIL has been specifically designed to meet railway infrastructure standards and as the biggest in the recently launched RAIL series, it has a lifting performance of 20,000kg with an outreach of ten meters. It is an ideal solution for rapid response in recovery and emergency situations for both rail and metro networks as it can operate below the power lines, so the overhead lines do not have to be dismantled, and in confined spaces due its compact size. The stabilisers allow the vehicle with the crane installed to move sideways from one parallel track to another.

The eight HIAB iX.2758 RAIL loader crane models are equipped with the SPACEevo control system with additional railway safety features to comply with the industry standards, as well as connectivity to access Hiab’s HiConnect service. .

With its 60m MEGAFORM boom with TWIN-LOCK pinning system, the 150t Grove GMK5150L-1 is ideal for erecting tower cranes, as well as lifting prefabricated elements, installing air conditioning units, or mounting billboards. It completes these tasks with ease thanks to its high capacity, compact footprint, and simple maneuverability.

Nordic Cranes will use all the new cranes on a variety of projects, including construction and infrastructure jobs, tower crane erection, maintenance work at power stations, and more. The cranes were all delivered to Nordic Crane earlier this year, with local Grove dealer ANK Cranes providing full training and commissioning, as well as handling local registration with relevant authorities. .

SCANIA AND HAVI IN FIRST EUROPEAN PILOT OF FULLY AUTONOMOUS VEHICLES

Scania is partnering with HAVI Supply Chain for a groundbreaking new trial that sees an autonomous truck being used in the transport of commercial goods. The pilot, carried out under regular traffic conditions, aims to learn about the effectiveness of autonomous truck transport as part of hub-to-hub operations.

In what is a first for Europe, Scania and HAVI Supply Chain are piloting the use of a fully autonomous vehicle to transport commercial goods in regular traffic conditions between logistics hubs. The pilot will see the autonomous truck drive between Södertälje and Jönköping, a three-hour journey of around 300km, and the route forms part of a longer logistics flow for HAVI, with the first and last mile being handled by manually driven vehicles.

“We know the transport system will change in the coming years and that the industry faces challenges of driver shortages and diminishing margins, so the transformation process towards autonomous technology needs to start happening right away,” said Robert Melin Mori, Scania’s Project Manager in charge of this initiative.

The pilot is a first step in showing how autonomous trucks can form part of a viable hub-to-hub logistics flow and allows Scania and HAVI to evaluate the effectiveness of the technology in their operations.

“We need to learn about autonomous operations now so that we are ready as soon as the technology is ready. We

believe this pilot will be a hugely important steppingstone,” said Melin.

The two companies have already established a strong track record of cooperation in several forward-thinking initiatives around electrified transport, in keeping with their shared commitment to decarbonising the transport system and exploring innovations to improve the efficiency and sustainability of commercial transport operations.

“We have built up a strong understanding through the initiatives we’ve already undertaken together, and we are very happy to be in partnership on this latest pilot, which we believe holds enormous promise for our future relationship and for the future of the supply chain industry as a whole,” said Massimo D’Alessandro, Director of Sustainability & Innovation at HAVI. .

CITIC CONSTRUCTION ORDERS FIVE LINTEC ASPHALT MIXING PLANTS

The 943.4km ‘Bright Path’ project in southeastern Kazakhstan supports the Belt and Road Initiative and will contribute to making the country the preferred cross-continental transit hub in Central Asia.

The unique containerised design of Lintec’s CSM asphalt plants has provided one of China’s largest contractors, CITIC Construction with several important benefits over the course of its major road rehabilitation projects in southeastern Kazakhstan.

With five Lintec CSM4000 plants now operating in the region, transporting these large asphalt plants to the job sites was the first hurdle to overcome. It was however made much easier thanks to their main modules being conveniently built within ISO certified shipping containers. The plant’s components do not just fit in the container, they are in-built within the container which is 100% ISO certified.

As a result, when the first two plants were shipped out to the Taldykorgan~ Ust-Kamenogorsk and Usharal-Dostyk (TKU~UD) road improvement project in 2018, Lintec could send the plants by rail for the very first time. With its trademark yellow containers, the train left the Lintec factory near Shanghai, China, heading towards the customer in the landlocked Central Asian nation, a great

improvement from the traditional road freight or sea transit methods.

The Lintec team also customised the containers with a variety of protective measures for the journey, such as secure packaging, ensuring the equipment’s safety and eliminating the risk of theft or vandalism.

Once the containers were unloaded, their modular construction made installation faster, cheaper and far more convenient than other conventional plants.

“Among the large-capacity asphalt plants, the Lintec CSM4000 offers the fastest erection and relocation times,” says Tony Liu, CEO, Lintec & Linnhoff China. “There’s no need for concrete foundations because their flat, rigid surface area ensures high stability on suitably compacted soil. All you need to do is to plug-and-play thanks to the pre-assembly and testing works that is done at the factory.”

Against the wind

In addition to a neat industrial appearance, the containerised design concept also provided each

GLOBAL NEWS 68

plant with much-needed protection from the harsh elements of the windswept Kazakh terrain.

“Whether they were faced with rain, snow or sandstorms, bad weather conditions have had no impact on the equipment encased inside ‘Big Yellow’ (the nickname given to the plants),” explains Liu. “This has greatly extended their life and performance, while also reducing the need for maintenance.”

The same protective structure also provides security advantages, with just a single, lockable, access point in the design. Once access is granted, the walkways and staircases provide fast and convenient maintenance access to all levels.

As the second largest capacity model of the range, the CSM4000 boasts an impressive output of 320 tonnes of hot mix asphalt per hour, in batch sizes of 4,000kg. This met the contractor’s need for plants that could produce high quantities of hot-mix asphalt consistently.

“In addition to the high productivity, a key factor in CITIC’s decision to purchase the Lintec CSM4000 asphalt plant was the reliable German design and our Miprotek M4 operating system which allows for partial or full automation of production. The recipe can be specified and changed at any time, or remain perfectly consistent – with the customer always in full control,” adds Liu.

Crossing continents

As a crucial part of Kazakhstan’s ‘Bright Path’ project, the TKU~UD improvement scheme covers the 180km UsharalDostyk (A7 Highway) port road in the Almaty region. This is in addition to the 763.4km Taldykorgan~Ust-Kamenogorsk (A3 Highway) section in the nearby, newly created Zhetysu region. The A7 Highway will be constructed to Kazakhstan II road standards, with a roadbed width of 15m providing two lanes for two-way traffic, while 53.445km of the A3 Highway is expected to adopt the Kazakhstan I-b road standard, with a 25.5m roadbed width catering for four lanes of two-way travel.

With a total length of 943.4km including alterations and new sections, the new highways will allow for designated speeds of up to 120km/h. This would provide an important gateway for connectivity between China, Kazakhstan and surrounding countries when the job is completed in 2023.

Embracing China’s Belt and Road Initiative in support of its goal of becoming Central Asia’s largest business and transit hub, Kazakhstan invested about $30 billion in infrastructure development, transport and logistics assets and competence by April 2019. By spanning almost 3,000km east to west, and reducing the number of national border controls, the country offers easier access to Europe and the Caspian nations. It is thus set to recoup this investment quickly, potentially receiving $5 billion annually in commercial transit fees..

In addition, our engineering team worked hard to integrate electronics technology such as ISOBUS and GPS guidance along with refining the driving comfort that the Fastrac offers,” says Shane Coates, Vice President of Agricultural Sales for JCB. “At the same time, we wanted operators to have a familiar experience in terms of the controls and information displays to ensure existing users can quickly adapt to the new system.”

The iCON armrest console

At the heart of the new Fastrac iCON models is a new electronics infrastructure that enables a host of modern technology features to be fully integrated as standard or optional equipment. The most obvious improvement of this development is the new iCON seat-mounted armrest console and a 12in color touch-screen display that can be positioned ahead of the controls for easy viewing or moved to one side to maximize visibility through the Fastrac’s large windshield.

The console houses a new main joystick; assignable RGB LED color-coded switches giving proportional control of electrically operated spool valves; pto and hitch controls; an auxiliary joystick; and hard keys plus a display navigation dial for an alternative to using the touch screen.

Hydraulic functions can be allocated freely to the five main joystick buttons, and to a fourway auxiliary joystick with its four buttons and rocker switch, with LED color backlights identifying which spool valve is allocated to which control.

JCB’s new high definition 12in touch screen display presents key information on five screens using clear, crisp graphics, with the basic drive screen layout designed to look familiar to current Fastrac users.

At the steering control column, a new 7in fully digital dashboard display provides speed and engine rpm read-outs, along with essential machine status information.

Transmission control choice

Smart Transmission Control is a new speedbased system that allows operators to set the required forward speed and leave the tractor to do the hard work of balancing engine speed and gear ratio to achieve that speed under changing load.

For added convenience, the joystick and pedal driving modes no longer have to be pre-selected – they are automatically selected when either control is used. And a unique feature allows operators to choose one of two input configurations when controlling the transmission using the joystick.

Current Fastrac operators may wish to use the JCB Classic setting, changing ground speed by moving the joystick left and right, and select direction by moving it forwards and backwards.

Operators new to the Fastrac may prefer the new JCB Pro format where operators push forward and pull back to alter ground speed, move left to operate the forward/reverse shuttle and move right to engage the new roller thumb switch that provides very fine speed adjustments.

Operator comfort and convenience

Storage is enhanced by the addition of a utility tray and cup holder on the right side of the operator, a storage box on the armrest, cargo nets at the back of the spacious Command Plus cab, and an under-seat drawer or cool box.

The radio is controlled using the touch screen display or hard keys and has a USB port in the radio deck for media. The tractor is also equipped with two high current charging USB ports in the utility tray, and a data transfer USB port in the armrest cubby.

For ultimate comfort, a top-of-the-line air suspension seat has been introduced with both heating and air conditioning, which is available as part of the Field Pro and new Pro Line option packs. .
