NRC ADDS THREE TADANO CRANES TO ITS FLEET IN IRAQ

North Refineries Company (NRC), an Iraqi Ministry of Oil company that refines crude oil to produce various oil products and lubricants, has recently added to their existing Tadano fleet with three new Tadano GR-300EX-3 model cranes.

They were purchased from Tadano through Sardar Automobile and Machinery Trading Co. Ltd (SAM), with delivery taken in September.

“They arrived just in the time we needed them,” said Sudad Ibrahim Majeed, Senior Chief Engineer of NRC. “SAM was very helpful during all processes of delivery. The process was clearly communicated, and the advance and handover training were excellent.”

The new GR-300EX models handle a variety of general maintenance activities involving welding, lifting pipes, lifting damaged equipment, and handling and lifting tanks, heat exchangers, and valves inside the refinery.

“We are using the cranes on a daily basis as we have heavy loads to lift, fix, and lower back,” added Majeed, noting that while the cranes have lift capacity limits beyond all refinery requirements, they follow the lifting tables closely, and use safety factors to minimize risks and allow for efficient operation.

Other Tadano cranes in NRC’s current fleet include four GT600EL units, two GT-300EL units, and one GT-750EL unit - all accessible within 10 minutes from any site location at NRC. Despite temperatures that often exceed 40-45°C, the cranes operate in all weather conditions except for high winds or heavy rains.

Located in Saladin Governorate in northern Iraq, roughly 210 kilometers from Baghdad, NRC was established there in 1978. Thanks to improved stability in Iraq, which enables NRC to process 310,000 barrels of oil every day, Iraq is destined for growth. .

Since the project began, eight units of SANY equipment assisted in constructing the Iraqi airport. The SANY equipment used included truck mixers, batching plants, wheel loaders and telehandlers.

The new airport, which has a capacity of 750,000 people annually, is anticipated to replace the current aviation center in south Iraq and help the region’s economy, investment climate, and traffic growth.

A terminal building, an air traffic control building, a cargo facility, a 25-kilometer airport highway, ancillary facilities, and the reconstruction of the runway and parking apron are all included in the $367 million contract for the project.

RAIMONDI MIDDLE EAST DEPLOYS TWO LUFFERS IN DUBAI

Two new Raimondi LR213s were installed in one of Dubai’s largest communities, Jumeirah Lake Towers, for the construction of a 163m height mixed-use tower. Upon completion, the new 40-storey tower will feature 330 residential units alongside commercial spaces.

“We rented these two luffers to the project contractor, M/S Bu Haleeba Contracting, after carefully evaluating the jobsite specifications and the client’s requirements,” said Wael Hasan, Middle East Commercial Director, Raimondi Cranes. “Rising in one of the most densely populated and congested neighborhoods of Dubai, the site’s surrounding towers were the key aspects considered during site planning phase and choosing the suitable crane model.”

Luffing jib cranes were chosen to avoid collision and overfly of surrounding properties, paired with the LR213’s good lifting capacity. “The two LR213s, having maximum lifting capacity of 14tn, are currently at work onsite with a tower mast of 36m and a jib length of 50m,” said Hasan. “Equipped with a 55kW hoisting winch with a drum capacity of 880m, the cranes lift at a maximum speed up to 104 meters per minute.”

In the early site mapping stages, climbing plans were drawn up, as the luffers need to reach a final height of 163m. The tightly built-up surroundings of the Dubai jobsite meant that no external climbing would be possible, thereby necessitating an internal climbing plan.

The cranes were erected by the Raimondi Middle East Operations team and will remain onsite for approximately 24 months. Raimondi Middle East is currently working across several different UAE jobsites, with more than 50 cranes deployed. .

“The requirements in the Saudi market are growing and we are seeing a growing demand for mobile cranes, especially in the class between 100 and 300 tonnes,” said Hussein Ali Al Anazy, Chairman of GHHL. The order placed with Liebherr comprises six LRT 1100-2.1 rough-terrain cranes, six LTM 1120-4.1 all-terrain cranes, four LTM 1150-5.3 models and two LTM 1300-6.2 cranes.

CDE SAND WASHING SOLUTIONS TO SUPPORT MAJOR LAND REMEDIATION EFFORT IN KUWAIT

Working alongside industrial and engineering services firm Gulf Center United Industrial Equipment Co., CDE’s longstanding partner in Kuwait, and KAK-LAMOR JV/C, a joint venture between Kuwaiti EPC contractors Khaled Ali Al-Kharafi & Brothers Co. and Finnish remediation specialists Lamor, CDE wet processing technology will be utilised for the treatment of up to 800,000 tons of contaminated soil per year.

Wet processing experts CDE, in partnership with Gulf Center United Industrial Equipment Co. and KAK-LAMOR JV/C announced plans to supply two contaminated soils wash plants to support the clean-up effort of an estimated 114km2 of polluted land in Kuwait as part of one of the largest environmental projects of its kind.

The plans were announced to coincide with World Soils Day (December 5), an international day to focus attention on the importance of healthy soil and to advocate for the sustainable management of soil resources.

Following the destruction of some 700 oil wells in the early 1990s, approximately 26,000,000m3 of soil was contaminated with crude oil, signalling the launch of one of the most extensive remediation programmes involving the cooperation and expertise of a consortium of international partners.

KAK-LAMOR JV/C have appointed CDE to design and engineer a turnkey wash plant for each of the North Kuwait Excavation, Transportation and Remediation (NKETR Zone 1) and South Kuwait Excavation, Transportation and Remediation (SKETR Zone 1) projects.

The two 100t/h and 140t/h solutions will process and remediate the coarse soil fraction to eliminate contaminants and recover high-quality washed construction sand and aggregates suitable for reuse. Further still, CDE’s expertise in the development of sustainable washing solutions will help to reduce the carbon footprint associated with the overall operation through significant efficiency gains.

“The scale and ambition of this remediation programme cannot be understated,” said Ruchin Garg, CDE’s Regional Manager for the Middle East and Africa. “It is a true test of our engineering excellence and a demonstration of how robust and effective CDE technology is at processing contaminated soils.”

It is anticipated the two plants will be commissioned in early 2023. .

Saudi sustainable tourism development company Red Sea Global has signed a deal with Electromin and Energy International Corporation to deliver a carbon-neutral, electric mobility network to its Red Sea development.

Electromin will assist in the supply of an electric bus fleet in collaboration with the Chinese company Yutong and the European manufacturer and supplier of electric vehicles, EURABUS. The fleet of zero-emission electric buses, which will be used initially to transport employees around the site, marks the company’s first smart sustainable integrated transport network.

To conveniently service regular routes for employees, the fleet will consist of two types of vehicles: a smaller vehicle with a range of around 250km and a larger bus with a range of roughly 350km when fully charged. Emission-free transport at RSG corresponds with its larger ambition to power the entire destination with solar energy, thus reducing carbon emissions by about 500K tons per year.

BIN QURAYA ADDS AN LTM 1750-9.1 TO ITS CRANE FLEET

Bin Quraya. “With its 800-tonne upgrade, the LTM 1750-9.1 can meet this demand very well. It is the most powerful crane in our fleet.”

The Saudi fleet company plans to use the new LTM 17509.1 above all for maintenance work in the petrochemical industry. “For many years we hardly had any problems with the cranes and Liebherr has always provided rapid support as needed. This is of course is very important for us, as we work directly with the oil company Saudi Aramco, for example,” said Bin Quraya.

Bin Quraya has strengthened its crane fleet with an LTM 17509.1 mobile crane. Liebherr handed over the symbolic key to the Saudi Arabian company at bauma Munich. In addition to the impressive performance of the LTM 1750-9.1, Liebherr’s high quality standards and reliable service were key criteria for Bin Quraya.

“We are seeing a growing demand in our market for cranes in this high load-capacity class,” said Awad Bin Quraya, owner of

Two years ago Liebherr improved the LTM 1750-9.1’s performance across almost its entire working range. The use of refined static calculation methods made it possible to increase the crane’s lifting capacity. Due to its high load capacity and variable boom system, it can cover a wide range of jobs in industry, infrastructure and the energy sector. The all-terrain crane is designed to ensure particularly short set-up times and maximum mobility..

A total of 35 trailers drove the crane across 1,400 kilometres of road, a five-day journey that required special permits from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Six crew members then assembled (and later disassembled) the crane, which remained on site for six weeks.

With the construction of the new Four Seasons hotel in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the Al-Hashemiah Contracting Company called upon Sarens to perform a lifting operation for its ballroom trusses.

Manoeuvring the 750-tonne LR1750 crawler crane around the congested project site, Sarens successfully installed trusses weighing up to 63.5 tonnes at heights ranging from

The location of this soon-to-be luxury property is positioned near the sea, but that presents its own challenges as high wind speeds were a concern during crane operation. The two-person Sarens team also had to contend with a worksite located in a busy residential area, and traffic management was a major concern. To perform each lift, the crane had to park in the middle of the road, which required road closure permits from assembly through full disassembly..

LIFTING THE MARKET

Industry specialists from Hyster, Manitou and Maximal speak to Plant & Equipment about forklift demand in the Middle East, and how it is likely to develop in 2023.

28 MIDDLE EAST NEWS - FORKLIFTS

Small, agile and powerful. When you need to move large volumes of materials quickly, there’s no trustier companion than the humble forklift truck. With roots stretching back to the 19th century and units toiling away in every corner of the globe, it’s easy to take these machines for granted. But make no mistake, these ever-dependable lifters have never been so important.

Nowhere is this truer than in the Gulf, where the rise of e-commerce is driving demand for materials handling equipment of all types. According to figures released by Data Bridge Market Research, the value of the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region’s forklift market reached more than $2 billion in 2021 and looks set to reach nearly $3 billion before the end of the decade, representing a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.6% during the period 2022-29.

It’s hardly surprising, therefore, that manufacturers supplying materials handling equipment to the Gulf seem pleased with

the current landscape. James Newman, Middle East Business Director at Hyster, tells Cameron Hubbard: “Although the market peak of 2021 and early 2022 has eased, we have continued to see strong demand from businesses across the region. We now have an even wider range of products to meet

James Newman, Middle East Business Director at Hyster.

the needs of different types of applications. This has allowed us to cement our position and drive growth.”

“In Saudi Arabia, demand for Hyster warehouse equipment is up significantly compared to [2021],” Newman continues. “This is likely driven by the aim to transform the Kingdom into a leading industrial powerhouse and global logistics hub.”

Encouragingly, regional demand is by no means limited to the forklift segment alone. Manufacturers and their dealer networks appear to be presiding over healthy order books across the spectrum of materials handling. Jeremie Calteau, Middle East Commercial Sales Manager at Manitou Group, says: “2022 was a great year; we were not expecting the market to grow as much as it did. It grew by approximately 40% in the Middle East, which has benefitted us greatly. Manitou Group saw an increase in sales of telehandler and

rough-terrain machines along with backhoe and skid-steer loaders. We can also see quite a big increase in the market regarding part and attachment sales.

“One of our main businesses here in the region is telehandlers,” adds Calteau. “With its lift height of 18m and 4-tonne capacity, the Manitou MT-X 1840 is especially popular.

“Construction is the key business for Manitou here in the Middle East, as well as oil and gas,” he continues. “Saudi Arabia is the leading market for forklifts in the region ahead of the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain. Agriculture is another massive industry for us in Israel, with our rough-terrain forklifts performing particularly well in that market.”

While today’s forklift trucks may still resemble their 20th and even 19th-century forebears in certain respects, that’s not to say this segment is lacking in innovation. On the contrary, the segment’s ongoing shift from internal combustion to electric battery-powered units is facilitating greener lifting, not to mention a host of peripheral benefits such as reduced noise levels and cost-effective operations. In fact, electric models are estimated to offer up to 20% lower operating costs than conventional diesel-powered units, according to Transparency Market Research.

According to Julia Ye, Sales Director at Maximal, research and development is an important component for manufacturers looking to gain a competitive edge in the Middle East’s forklift market. Headquartered in China’s Zhejiang Province, Maximal has invested heavily in the development of electric models, and these efforts appear to be paying dividends.

30
MIDDLE EAST NEWS - FORKLIFTS
Jeremie Calteau, Middle East Commercial Sales Manager at Manitou Group.

“Technological innovations in forklift trucks, such as electric and lithium-ion battery units, are a huge innovation,” Ye explains. “The fast-charging capabilities of lithium-ion batteries are significantly reducing the downtime of forklift trucks and improving the overall operational efficiencies of material-handling and warehouse operations. These battery-powered models are also relatively eco-friendly when compared to their diesel counterparts. Non-toxic, non-hazardous and completely sealed units mean no spills or emissions as well as easy maintenance.

“In April 2022, in response to environmental protection and high-efficiency requirements, Maximal launched its FBAX4.5x5T electrification technology,” Ye continues. “This model will better meet our customers’ needs in different markets while helping to realise the concepts of low-carbon and environmental protection.”

So, what’s next for the Middle East’s forklift sector? Current indicators suggest another strong year for this market in 2023, thanks in no small part to ongoing mega and gigadevelopments such as the Red Sea Project and NEOM in Saudi Arabia.

“We are excited to see 2023 brings as the Middle East market continues to develop,” says Newman. “Hyster continually evolves its product range, introducing new lift trucks and solutions to the market as well as updates to existing models. Our team is also developing innovative solutions. For instance, we recently announced the testing of a laden container

handler powered by hydrogen fuel cells (HFCs), technology which is particularly interesting for ports and terminals in the Middle East.”

Calteau seems equally optimistic about Mantiou Group’s prospects in the region. “We have already received a significant number of orders for 2023,” he tells Plant & Equipment. “We will be delivering a lot of new machines here in the Middle East, so we hope to increase our turnover and sales across the region thanks to the many projects that are ongoing.”

Ye concurs, citing the region’s ongoing economic recovery in the wake of the global pandemic as a catalyst for growth within the Gulf’s forklift segment over the coming year. “Maximal is optimistic about business in the Middle East in 2023,” she concludes..

TADANO DELIVERS GR-900EX-4 ROUGH TERRAIN CRANE IN ALGERIA

APPOINTMENT PERKINS APPOINTS DELTA INDUSTRIAL EQUIPMENT LIMITED AS A DISTRIBUTOR IN NIGERIA

Perkins Engines Company Limited has entered into an agreement appointing Delta Industrial Equipment Limited as an authorised Perkins distributor in Nigeria.

Drawing on its extensive experience across the region, Delta is already an established Perkins distributor supporting 11 territories through Africa and the Middle East. Delta Industrial Equipment Limited is headquartered in Lagos, with a further three branches in Victoria Island, Port Harcourt and Abuja.

Tadano’s presence in Algeria continues to grow, as longtime customer Sarl Meliah Makoudi Services recently took delivery of a GR-900EX-4 rough terrain crane. The company works with customers for a variety of handling and lifting jobs, currently managing a fleet of 11 cranes – six of which are from Tadano.

The company already counts Tadano models GR-550EX, GR600EX, GT-600EX, and two GR-800EX among their fleet; this is the company’s first delivery of a GR-900EX-4, and the first delivery of this model in Algeria.

The GR-900EX-4 offers 90t of capacity and a main boom length of 12m - 47m; the bi-fold lattice-type jib can expand reach up to an additional 17.7m. In addition, the high-performance AML-E ensures operational safety. It is ideal for the rig work for which Sarl Meliah Makoudi acquired the GR-900EX-4.

Major developments with the oil industry in Algeria are creating significant demand for cranes and other construction equipment. At the same time, the Algerian government currently prohibits the import of used cranes, boosting demand for newly produced units. The country is now one of the hottest crane markets on the African continent; all 11 cranes in Sarl Meliah Makoudi Services’ fleet are currently mobilized.

While the GR-900EX-4’s power and capacity were major factors in their purchasing decision, the need to be safe and reliable in an oil field, working on oil rigs, were even larger considerations.

Delivered on time, the GR-900EX-4 was immediately deployed to a rig in southern Algeria. Transport of the crane took place on a lowboy truck; the 1,000km journey and transfer took two days across the heat of the Algerian desert. A 4-person crew set up the crane after training from the distributor, Sarl Manyl Machinery..

The company has an existing business footprint in Nigeria, which it is utilising to quickly provide the required service and support to Perkins’ customer base across the country. Delta Industrial Equipment Limited will be led by the highly experienced Sherif Aly, who has a wealth of knowledge on both the country and customer requirements, having previously managed and grown key business units within Nigeria for the wider Delta group.

“Nigeria is an important territory for our business due to the number of Perkins-powered machines operating in the territory and therefore the parts and service support we can offer to our customer base,” said Jaz Gill, Vice President of Global Sales, Marketing, Service and Parts at Perkins.

Ayman Ezz El Din, Group Power Systems Director at Delta said: “As an established dealer of leading equipment brands and genuine parts in Nigeria for over 20 years, we are proud to add the Perkins brand to our portfolio.” .

IDP ASSEMBLES EGYPT’S FIRST POTAIN MCR 295 CRANES

The 75-acre area by the River Nile is already home to many important buildings, including the Radio and Television Union Maspero building, the Foreign Ministry building, the Dar al-Maarif building, the Italian Consulate, and the Ramses Hilton Hotel.

As such, given the limited space, Orascom Construction needed cranes that were not only reliable, consistent, and high performing, but which could also work efficiently on a confined jobsite, helping to meet delivery deadlines.

Egyptian Potain dealer IDP successfully assembled the country’s first two Potain MCR 295 luffing jib tower cranes to help contactor Orascom Construction develop the Maspero Triangle district in downtown Cairo.

“The Potain brand’s reputation for quality and innovative technology gave us the trust and confidence to expand our fleet with the new MCR 295 cranes. We are proud to have the first units in Egypt working on this prestigious project,” said Hossam Mounir, Equipment Deputy Director at Orascom Construction.

With a 60m jib length and load capacity of up to 16t, the two Potain MCR 295 luffing jib cranes were ideal for the job. The compact and versatile design with near-vertical luffing capability enables multiple cranes to be positioned on site and avoids oversailing existing buildings.

IDP and Potain erected the cranes with an initial 37m height under hook and they will reach a final height under hook of 150m. The cranes will remain on-site for approximately three years. .

OFF-HIGHWAY HEROES

Per Lorentzon, Commercial Manager for Market Area Africa at Volvo Construction Equipment, speaks to Plant & Equipment about regional demand for the manufacturer’s heavy-duty haulers.
AFRICA NEWS - PROFILE 40

Heavy-duty haulage represents big business. According to data published by Transparency Market Research, the global off-highway truck market registered a value of more than $783 billion in 2021 and is expected to reach an eye-watering $1.3 trillion within the coming eight years. With an impressive compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.1% forecast for the period 2022-31, off-highway trucks look set to remain in high demand for the foreseeable future.

These super-strength behemoths are particularly important to markets in Africa, especially those built around the continent’s wealth of natural resources. In South Africa, for instance, the mining industry contributed approximately $12.8 billion to the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP) in 2021, while mergers and acquisitions in the country related to this industry surpassed $9 billion in 2022, according to figures released by Statista. With similar economic focuses in markets such as Angola, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Ghana and others, it’s no wonder offhighway trucks are in perennial demand.

With an enviable track record in Africa stretching back decades, Volvo Construction Equipment supplies high volumes of off-highway trucks to markets across the length and breadth of the continent. Per Lorentzon, Commercial Manager for Market Area Africa at Volvo CE, certainly seems satisfied with his team’s regional performance during the past year.

“2022 has been great for Volvo CE in Africa,” he tells Plant & Equipment. “It has been a record year in terms of the total market, and our performance has been strong – especially for articulated haulers. We are the leader in this segment, with more than 50% of the market share. In the mining segment especially, production is high, driven by high commodity prices and demand for rare earth materials used in electromobility and renewable energy technologies. We have helped many mining companies both to renew their fleets and expand them to increase output.

“So, we have sold many Volvo A40G, A45G and A60H articulated haulers for mining,” Lorentzon continues. “These larger models are always popular, but we have seen increased demand for the A60H in particular. With a 55-tonne payload capacity, the Volvo A60H is the largest articulated hauler on the market and can help increase both productivity and flexibility within a fleet. We have even seen some customers looking to replace their rigid haulers with A60H articulated haulers, as they add flexibility to a fleet and have greater off-road capabilities. The articulated hauler concept offers excellent traction on steep gradients and in slippery conditions, which can help customers to continue operating safely and productively throughout the rainy seasons.”

AFRICA NEWS - PROFILE www.PlantAndEquipment.com 41

In terms of the markets driving demand for Volvo CE’s articulated haulers, Lorentzon says that mining is playing the greatest role at present, citing South Africa, Angola, DRC and Ghana as particular highlights. “Naturally, we have also sold smaller-sized articulated haulers – mainly the A30G –into the municipality, waste and recycling, and construction segments,” he adds.

So, what are Lorentzon’s expectations for the coming 12 months? While he concedes the segment cannot continue to grow at such a steep trajectory indefinitely, he remains buoyant about Volvo CE’s prospects in Africa. “We renewed many fleets in 2022,” he says. “The outlook for the global economy in 2023 is a bit hard to predict, so demand might be slightly down. However, overall, we feel very optimistic.

“Volvo CE is well known in Africa as the originator of the articulated hauler concept, and we are still the market leader many years later,” Lorentzon concludes. “To maintain that position, we focus a lot of effort on the future development of the product itself, along with the footprint and capabilities of our dealer network and logistics set-up. Customers appreciate that we are continually investing and adding services to be their number-one choice for uptime, productivity and profitability, so that will stand us in good stead for 2023 and beyond.”

Spotlight on innovation

The Volvo brand has been synonymous with innovation for nearly a century, especially when it comes to safety. From the three-point seat belt to the roll-over protection system (ROPS), the manufacturer has been responsible for countless life-saving inventions within the automotive sector, and Volvo CE is no different.

“We have been rolling out more advanced services in the shape of Volvo Co-Pilot with Haul Assist to help customers increase their safety, uptime and productivity,” explains Lorentzon. “The key features are On-Board Weighing, our Tire Pressure Monitoring System and Connected Map.

“As well as the desired route, the map function informs the operator of the location of other machines and personnel on site, reducing congestion and improving safety,” he continues. “It also issues speed limit notifications when necessary to remind operators to keep to the recommended speed for safer operations.”

On-Board Weighing, meanwhile, is designed to eliminate dangerous overloading, improving safety and decreasing unnecessary fuel consumption and wear. “This system provides real-time payload information to the screen in the cab and uses external lights as a visual guide for the operator to indicate when the nominal load has been reached,” says Lorentzon. “It also enables remote monitoring of productivity.”

Volvo CE’s Tire Pressure Monitoring System provides real-time data relating to pressure and temperature.

As for Volvo CE’s new Tire Pressure Monitoring System, Lorentzon adds: “It gives operators an instant and safe indication that tires are functioning within the correct parameters. Via the 10-inch Volvo Co-Pilot touchscreen display in the cab, operators can see realtime information on tire pressure and temperatures, both as nominal values and percentages. They also receive visual alerts if there are inconsistencies in pressure or temperature, indicating which tyres to keep under observation and when to take action.”

Schmitz Cargobull’s used trailer business has a robust operation in Europe with multiple sales locations across the continent. With the demand for trailers growing globally, the company has developed its Value Added Services (VAS) tremendously. Schmitz Cargobull has enhanced its service offering by developing other aspects of the customer journey such as trailer telematics, financing and full-service contracts.

52 GLOBAL NEWS - PROFILE

Headquartered in Horstmar, Germany, Schmitz Cargobull celebrated 130 years of business in 2022. It all began when Franz Heinrich Schmitz bought a small smithy from his father in Altenberge in 1892 and built the first trailer in 1935. From then Schmitz’s business has been handed down from generations of the family and with the need for trailers growing, the company has also grown and branched out operations to many countries in Europe from the early 1980s.

The main countries of business for used trailer sales are in Europe, the Caucasus and the -stan areas (Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan). “Currently we see a high demand from the Baltic nations. In the last two years, demand from Middle East and Africa is lower, due to high shipping prices, plus the generally higher price point for used trailers in Europe,” says Luc Kessels, Deputy Head of Used Trailers at Schmitz Cargobull. “We are also seeing an increase in demand for newer used trailers in our home markets of Western, Central

and Southwest Europe.” The company continues to establish new used trailer locations, with the main European countries all having subsidiaries and ample trailer stocks.

Most of Schmitz Cargobull’s stock of used trailers comes from trade-in, buyback obligations or end of lease and default leasing cases. “Nowadays, 50% of our stock is free purchase. We buy from dealers, traders, transport companies, banks, and auctions,” continues Kessels.

The company’s sales representatives have the authority to buy and sell the used trailers. With a robust centralised computer network, all purchases and sales details are inserted in the system for management approval which is usually a quick and easy click of a mouse.

The company uses a front-end sales and purchase system which is central and accessible to their entire network of 32 used trailer stores throughout Europe. Each access point can view the entire European stock (including pictures, prices,

quality checks, available options on each trailer etc). All incoming and expected stock of equipment that is bought or returning soon from financing or buyback obligations is visible to all users. The network also shows each trailer’s historical buying and selling price simplifying the decision-making process for the management.

“We are flexible, fast, and structured in this way. We keep track of thousands of purchase prices, because our centralised and efficient system is up to date and tracks the changing market prices,” says Kessels.

Standing behind their product

Ninety-nine percent of Shmitz Cargobull’s products are standard trailers, curtainsiders, refrigerated, container chassis and tippers. “Our annual sales are usually 10,000 units per year, however, in the last two pandemic years the demand was very high and due to not enough supply we were only able to sell around 6,500 units, and as you can do the math, there wasn’t a change in our turnover numbers,” says Kessels.

Schmitz Cargobull deals in their own products but does buy and resell other brands. “We prefer our own brand of used trailers,” continues Kessels. “We buy trailers between one to seven years old, and most of our stock is this quality as it is our strength, and it is what makes us a market leader in the sector. Our expertise is also for this range of trailers.”

Most countries which have the company’s presence, buyers have the facility of being able to refinance the used trailers as well as receive full-service contracts and telematic contracts via the company’s own subsidiaries - Cargobull Finance, Cargobull Telematics and Cargobull Parts & Services.

Schmitz Cargobull has more than 3,600 service partners globally that take care of service and warranty for buyers wherever they may need it. Used trailers do not get full guarantee, but the company supports their customers should any problems arise. “We have a sound reputation; we stand behind our products. I’ve been with the brand for almost 18 years and have never heard of any serious problems with the used trailers that we have sold. We work with our buyers, find solutions, supply parts, or take the unit back in case of an unsolvable or unforeseen problem,” says Kessels. Reputation and long-term cooperation is key.

Full-service contracts are provided for used trailers, especially for the reefer trailers that have the Schmitz Cargobull Cooling engine. The cooling engine was first introduced in 2014, now almost 20% of all Schmitz Refrigerated trailers leave the factory with their own engine..

HAMM ANNOUNCES THE HC 119 AND HC 129 FOR EARTHWORKS

at 11t operating weight. In this regard, the manufacturer is merging the compactors of the existing 3000 series and H series. The drum width on all models is 2140mm.

The powerful Cummins engine ensures that maximum compaction force is always available, and the vibration works immediately once the nominal frequency is activated. HAMM fits all models with drum drive.

HAMM recently launched the new models for the HC series including the HC 119 and HC 129. The latest models are designed specifically for Southeast Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. They bring ample power to the construction site, but thanks to the ECO mode, they are significantly more economical than their predecessors.

HAMM has developed the new HC series on the basis of a standardised platform and supplies models worldwide starting

HAMM is initially supplying the compactor with an open platform. All models include a protective roof as standard to shield operators from sun and rain, and also feature ROPS/ FOPS as standard. The operation is self-explanatory and does not require any special language skills. Thanks to the design of the engine hood and the front vehicle, the driver can always keep the drum and the construction site in view.

The HC 119 and HC 129 models are driven by a robust and powerful water-cooled 82kW 4-cylinder engine in accordance with regional requirements. The engine can be operated with pure diesel or with B20 fuel, up to 20% of which is derived from biological sources..

facing configuration, and superior accessibility to the cab. The left-hand cab console redesign also places the wiper tank beneath one of the new open tray storage units, enabling convenient refills via the left-hand door.

The new Backhoe Loader SV Series has improvements to operators’ comfort, which result in big productivity gains. A relocated parking brake, new speedometer option, regrouped switches on the right-hand console, new integrated F-N-R switch in the loader control lever on the Power Shift model, new joystick roller switch for extending dipper operation and relocated stabiliser levers all add up to time savings.

CASE Construction Equipment recently launched the new Backhoe Loader SV Series. A pioneer market leader since 1957, the SV Series features a new expanded cab with enhanced controls retaining the best in class features ad performance. These features deliver benefits including greater operator comfort and increased productivity.

The redesigned and restyled interior and exterior cab is wider, providing greater clearance for the operator’s legs when rotating the seat between forward facing and rear

The FPT engine design optimises the fuel consumption during both production and travel and especially in backhoe digging applications. It continues to deliver a strong performance with best-in-class power and torque density.

Operating costs are kept at a minimum thanks to the variable volume pump that only delivers oil when needed. The familiar and effective one-side serviceability layout is retained for swift and convenient maintenance operations. .

SUSTAINABLE TESTING CATERPILLAR DEMONSTRATES FIRST BATTERY ELECTRIC LARGE MINING TRUCK

Caterpillar Inc. announced a successful demonstration of its first battery electric 793 large mining truck and a significant investment to transform its Arizona-based proving ground into a sustainable testing and validation hub of the future.

Caterpillar completed development of its first battery electric 793 prototype with support from key mining customers participating in Caterpillar’s Early Learner program. Participants of the program with definitive electrification agreements include BHP, Freeport-McMoRan, Newmont Corporation, Rio Tinto and Teck Resources Limited.

The Early Learner program launched in 2021 and focuses on accelerating the development and validation of Caterpillar’s battery electric trucks at participating customers’ sites. This approach supports the individual commitments each Early Learner participant has made to reduce and eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from their operations.

Early Learner customers came together to witness a live demonstration of Caterpillar’s prototype battery truck on a seven-kilometer course. During the event, Caterpillar monitored over 1,100 data channels, gathering 110,000 data points per second, to validate simulation and engineering modeling capabilities. Fully loaded to its rated capacity, the truck achieved a top speed of 60km/h. The loaded truck traveled one kilometer up a 10% grade at 12km/h. The truck also performed a one kilometer run on a 10% downhill grade, capturing the energy that would normally be lost to heat and regenerating that energy to the battery. Upon completing the entire run, the truck maintained enough battery energy to perform additional complete cycles..
