FLEET EXPANSION

TAMIMI RENTALS ACQUIRES 50 GROVE ROUGHTERRAIN CRANES Saudi Arabia crane and heavy equipment rental company Fahad S Al Tamimi & Partners Co. (Tamimi Rentals) is purchasing 50 new Grove rough-terrain cranes to support growth into the oil and gas sector. The GRT8100 cranes will join the company’s rental fleet that already includes over 40 Grove all-terrain cranes.

Grove rough-terrain cranes have long been the most popular choice for oil and gas work, with their reliability, strength and versatility ensuring the widest possible job scope on oilfields.

Mohammed Fahad S Al-Tamimi, CEO of Tamimi Rentals, said: “We chose Grove GRT8100 rough-terrain cranes because they have a very good load chart which is about 25 percent stronger than competitive machines,” he said “We also liked the precise and customizable movements that the Crane Control System (CCS) offers. Having close control is very important when lifting complex and expensive equipment around oil rigs.

In addition, we know that Grove cranes are reliable, having operated many all-terrain and rough-terrain cranes from the company down the years and we have a strong relationship with our local dealer, Kanoo Machinery.”

The first GRT8100 cranes have already been delivered, with others to follow over the coming months. They will be dispatched to a range of jobsites where typical lifts will include placing heavy machinery at shorter radii, for example when moving rigs, or lighter picks, working with fully extended booms for longer periods.

Given the variety of projects lined up for the GRT8100 cranes, Tamimi Rentals will be able to take full advantage of the

crane’s 100t maximum capacity combined with a five-section, full power boom that extends up to 47m, and which can increase its length to 64m with the use of a jib. Power comes from a Cummins QSB6.7L engine and the model offers an overall GVW of nearly 55t.

Tamimi Rentals currently runs a range of Grove all-terrain cranes from the manufacturer’s 4, 5, 6 and 7-axle categories, as well as a number of rough-terrain cranes, some of which were purchased several decades ago. All of these were supplied via Kanoo Machinery, and the close partnership between the two companies was another reason for this latest large purchase, as Manoj Tripathy, CEO of Kanoo, explained. “Tamimi Rentals has been our customer for a long time and we appreciate their continued confidence in Kanoo and Manitowoc with this latest investment,” he said. “We hope to strengthen our partnership and continue to provide exceptional service in the years to come.”.

AGILITY ABU DHABI INVESTS IN DOUBLETRAILER TRUCKS Agility, a leading global logistics provider, operates an extensive fleet of trailers in Abu Dhabi. About 50 of those are now double-trailer trucks. Double trailers significantly reduce the number of trips required to haul cargo, decreasing overall wear and tear on tires and vehicles. In the first six months of operation, Agility’s fleet management data demonstrates that double trailers reduce fuel use by 26 percent per container, eliminating about 2,500 metric tons of CO2 emissions per year.

Houssam Mahmoud, Chief Executive Officer for Agility Abu Dhabi, said: “In addition to being environmentally friendly, the double trailers will positively impact productivity - and that’s good for both Agility and our customers. We are able to pass a lot of this benefits to our customer by providing greater flexibility and a significant reduction in the number of required trips.”

Acquiring the permit to operate double-trailer trucks took six months of proposals, trials, accident simulations and safety demonstrations. Agility worked together with a local automotive distributor to develop the safest possible solution for the

market, including Active Brake Assist 4, proximity control, and lane assist. Agility conducted a transport route survey to identify any routes that might be risky or challenging for drivers. Agility insisted on lane assist capability for the vehicles and proposed it to the supplier after determining that drivers would need help to navigate sharp round-a-bouts. In the United Arab Emirates, Agility has an industry-leading safety record, linking driver incentive pay to safety, rather than speed of operations and has voluntarily provided extensive third-party training on double trailers to ensure it maintains its excellent record..

Tristar Group, announced that it has won a five-year contract, valued at $8 million, with Linde Global Helium.

Playing a key role in Linde Global Helium’s supply chain, Tristar will provide transport for Linde’s helium cargo across the GCC. Tristar will utilise its specially designed fleet which has advanced built-in safety features, to ensure the safe transport and delivery of Linde’s cryogenic containers. Furthermore, the cargo will be transported by Tristar’s professional drivers, who are all accredited and qualified in the handling of hazardous products including cryogenic gases at extremely low temperatures.

Al Masaood Tyres, Batteries and Accessories (TBA) Division, has revealed the signing of a strategic new distributorship agreement with Total Marketing Middle East (TMME), a leading lubricant company in the GCC region and an affiliate of Total, a global energy major.

FUSO CANTER EURO 5 LAUNCHED IN THE UAE Al Habtoor Motors and Daimler Commercial Vehicles MENA recently launched the new Fuso Canter Euro 5 in Dubai. The Canter is highly popular in the Middle East region and has remained prominent in the market for more than 57 years and across 8 different model generations.

There are two different cab widths available: the streamlined standard cabin, which is just 1,695mm wide and suitable for use in restricted spaces; and the comfortable wide cabin, measuring 1,995mm in width. In addition, the wide cabin is also available with a crew cabin option - fitting up to seven persons.

The new Fuso Canter range covers all the key segments for light-duty trucks. This includes two different axle configurations in 4x2 and 4x4 variants with a wide range of permissible gross vehicle weight spectrum from 5.7 tons to 8.55 tons Currently the range is available with 5-speed manual transmission. A 6-speed automated manual transmission (AMT) will soon be launched for the new Canter range in the 6.5 tons weight variant.

Several measures have been implemented into the newly designed common-rail 4P10 engine with 2,998ccm 2,998cc which is available in two engine outputs with 96kW (130ps) and 110kW (150ps). Both engines offer a flat torque curve with 300Nm and 370Nm at 1,300rpm & 1,320rpm respectively.

Using a higher torque engine with lower RPM ensures lesser strain on the engine and an overall longer engine life. With the newly available Euro 5 emission, less CO2 and NOx are emitted resulting in a reduced carbon footprint. The new Canter overfulfils the local emission norm required in the UAE. The other special features of the new Fuso Canter Euro 5 range include the variant with manually selectable all-wheel drive with a permissible gross vehicle weight of up to 6.0 tons, a 1,995mm comfortable wide cabin and an engine

output of 110kW (150ps). The all-wheel drive can be engaged whenever required; the Canter 4x4 includes the standard-fit engageable reduction gear. This reduces the maximum speed in the respective gears by a factor of 1.987 and also increases traction by this amount. The crew cabin option will also be available on the 4x4 model.

The new Fuso Canter Euro 5 range offers a number of new safety systems which includes ABS (Antilock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution), BOS (Brake Override System), driver and co-driver airbags, tubeless tyres and more.

The standard braking system is equipped with disc brakes on both axles, which guarantees superior braking performance & heat dissipation under continuous heavy braking.

The Canter with the highest GVW & 4x4 configurations are equipped with drum brakes at the rear axle on both axles. The standard Exhaust Brake System (EBS) valve is fitted on the turbo charger outlet. This system uses the vehicle exhaust gas to create a backpressure to slow down the engine, enabling vehicle stability. l Qahtani Vehicle and Machinery Company has a strong presence in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since its inception in 2006. The company’s CEO, Eng. Additionally, the equipment dealer has also paid greater attention to many services and maintenance projects. These projects have played a major role in keeping the demand for construction equipment at a relatively healthy level.

Hope for a better year is the only way forward and Al Qahtani Vehicle and Machinery Company is prepared to move ahead.

“Increasing our market share, adding new partners to our existing portfolio of top global suppliers and sourcing new products is what we have on our agenda for the year,” says Al-Qahtani about 2021. Quarry Mining manufactures and installs a wide range of plants for the quarry and minerals sector from its base in Ras Al Khaimah. Despite pandemic disruptions, 2020 was the busiest year in the company’s history, says Managing Director Moritz Kerler.

A

s the construction industry in Dubai boomed in the mid-2000s, demand for aggregates was at an all-time high, supplied mainly from quarries in Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah. Since then, as demand has dropped off, many quarries have closed down - according to one estimate, only 80 quarries are operating compared with 200 at the peak.

There’s also been rising demand for high specification materials for industrial plants - such as steel factories in India - and other applications, demand that only sophisticated operators can meet.

Many quarries have also been shut down for environmental reasons, especially if they didn’t invest in functioning dedusting plants or stockpile encapsulation.

For Moritz Kerler, Managing Director of Quarry Mining LLC, it illustrates a key fact for quarries, mines and businesses more generally: that to stay ahead they need to be constantly investing in new plant and equipment, improve products and processes, and be ready to meet any changes in the market.

“We can see the same thing here that we have seen in Europe and in other markets. The big grow much bigger, and many small ones disappear. This is how it is, especially in the minerals business: if you don’t go big, you have no chance,” he says.

Kerler has been selling plant to mines and quarries in the region since 1975. Quarry Mining, which is based in Ras Al Khaimah specialises in manufacturing of plant including conveyors, feeders, steel support structures, and the installation of plants for quarries and mines.

The company works with partners including Kleemann (mobile crushers), Thyssen Krupp, and other European OEMs (primarily German), and has a joint venture with Stiebel for gear motors. In addition to manufacturing a large range of steel products at their factory, they also assemble some products on site, including the Stiebel gear motors, which saves the import tax for GCC companies.

Outside of the UAE, the company has an office in Ras Al-Khair, the Minerals Industrial City north of Jubail in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia, while it has provided plant to major projects across the Middle East and Africa – recently that includes Jordan and Tanzania.

When it comes to winning projects, the focus on quality is what gets them across the line. Kerler says they are focused on what the customer wants and will use the equipment best suited to their requirements, whichever brand it is, rather than always looking to sell one particular brand. “We only offer that product with which our client can make best product and by that best profit.”

“Quality is always on top,” says Kerler. “If we design and sell a plant, we want that plant to work for 30-50 years ago, not only 14 or 15 years, like some of our competitors do. We are focused on quality.”

They offer both ‘standard’ and custom plants for quarries, but as Kerler notes, in the UAE today there is almost no thing as a standard solution anymore, since most sites want very specific plants as quarries must be able to meet a wide variety of demands.

He sees big demand for grades such as 30-60, 40-80, 50100, mainly required for Indian steel plants. Because they calcine the rock in the kiln it has to be a very specific quality – suppliers will be penalized if the rocks don’t meet the standards, as this will increase energy costs for the factories.

“In the good old days the demand was for the sand, 5-10 10-20, that time is over because the market became more demanding and more competitive. Now to produce your product at a reasonable cost, you need to have different aggregate sizes to compete. Those quarries who did their homework and introduced new products, they do the business now,” says Kerler.

Apart from industrial applications, producing special designed sand is another growing business area. “If you want to produce that high quality sand you need very specific machinery and screens to produce it. This is a kind of niche business, and there we are quite successful,” he says.

Beyond the UAE, Kerler sees KSA as a big opportunity, as the Kingdom makes major investments into its mineral and mining industry as part of its drive to diversify its economy away from oil – not to mention that the country has rich mineral deposits, unlike the UAE. Their office in Ras Al-Khair, with workers incountry on Saudi work visas, and Kerler’s connections in the country, means they are set up to do business there and have already won a number of projects.

“Mining is next huge big opportunity for [Saudi Arabia] because they are not only blessed with oil and gas, they’re also blessed with minerals,” he says.

Quarry Mining has extensive experience fabricating and installing plants for quarries and mines.

The company is also increasingly focused on meeting demand in Africa, where the buyers are looking for standard plants, says Kerler. “We have products that can meet every price segment,” he notes. With a sufficient work-force – in total, ranging between 130-170 people, with more than 30 staff

At Stevin Rock, the largest quarry in the Middle East, the company has installed a series of conveyors that can take material down the hill at the rate of 3,000, 3500 and 4500 tonnes an hour, including capturing the braking energy and feeding it into the natural grid. Currently Quarry Mining is getting set to install an additional 1.4km of conveyors there.

working just on installation and commissioning, the company can also operate at a much lower cost than a European company. With technicians sometimes on site for up to a year, the company is “very flexible in the scope of work,” he says.

They recently completed the installation of a plant to manufacture gypsum board in Tanzania, which included crusher, conveyors, steel and duct work and silos. In addition to the installation of their plant, they also carried out additional work on-site, since the workers from other companies could not reach the site due to travel restrictions. “Africa is definitely a major market for us for the future,” says Kerler.

For all the business disruptions of 2020, this year was the busiest they’ve ever been, says Kerler. To minimize the impact of COVID-19, he took all their staff out of shared accommodation, and moved them into temporary accommodation on their site, while they built a new threestory dormitory to house 72 staff, since completed. So far they haven’t had a single case of Corona among the workers, something that has helped them meet all their project delivery deadlines, and even helped win them new work, with some government procurement processes particularly focused on HSE this year.

Saving costs on-site Quarry Mining has a long association with Stevin Rock and sister company RAK Rock, having carried out major works at the two sites, which together are one of the largest quarrying

With site dumpers making up a major cost for a quarry or mine, especially tyres and the diesel, using conveyors can produce major savings for a site, though the initial investment means it will take several years for the savings to be realized.

In the case of Stevin Rock, the site has been able to gradually reduce its total dumper fleet each year, even as it has scaled up production, says Kerler. The use of conveyors rather than trucks also has a positive environmental impact.

The company is also set to work on the upgrade of infrastructure at sea ports in Ras Al Khaimah.

Speaking at the end of 2020, Kerler says they’re gearing up for an even bigger year in 2021. The company is making a series of major investments in their manufacturing capabilities, adding three new large CNC control machines to automate some of the production and improve quality, and a new sandblast plant and paint shop, which will improve quality, provide a better, safer working conditions for factory staff, and be more environmentally friendly.

Currently they are waiting for an assessor to grant them the EN 1090 Factory Production Control (FPC) standard, which would allow them to stamp the EC designation on their products – the process has been delayed by the pandemic, but Kerler is optimistic they will soon receive this prestigious designation from TÜV Rheinland.

Of the factory upgrades, these will result in a better end product with higher quality, says Kerler. “If you don’t do your homework in this field, you will be left on the side, I see it with my major customers - they invest every year. So it’s clear: if you want to sustain your business your quality must get better and your working processes must become more modern.”.

hen it comes to moving material and working at height, telehandlers are uniquely versatile and hence found on almost every construction site, from a single villa plot up to a mega project. With multiple attachments and sophisticated onboard electronics and controls, telehandlers can play many roles.

JCB launched its first loadall in 1977, the JCB 520, and since then has sold more than 270,000 telehandlers. It currently offers at least 15 telehandler variants, from the 516-40, the world’s smallest telehander, to the new 5.5-21, a rotating telehandler with a maximum reach of 20.5m and lifting capacity of 5,500kg.

“Our market share of over 50% in 2019 across the MENA region is testament to our leadership in the telehandler segment. As with any material handling machinery, safety is paramount.

An important factor to ensure safe operation of a telehandler is for the operator to level the machine based on the underfoot conditions on-site, with the help of stabilisers and onboard aids.

Apart from various material handling applications on construction sites, JCB telehandlers are also widely used in facility maintenance work with the use of man platform attachments, Sheriff says. They are also used in dairy farms across the region to handle fodder, and in oil & gas pipe-laying applications, equipped with forks, jibs and special purpose buckets. The sweeper collector attachment is also widely used by facility management companies and municipalities.

New roto range Bobcat’s top-selling telehandler is the 18m T40.180SLP. Bobcat has been number two in this segment in the GCC for several years, and number one in some countries in the region, says Gaby Rhayem, Regional Director Middle East and Africa for Doosan Bobcat. Telehandlers in the GCC are primarily used for handling and lifting jobs in construction.

“Customers really appreciate the unbeatable stability of the T40.180SLP, which can lift 4 tonnes up to 14m when on stabilisers, or can lift a heavy load up at 17m when on tyres, allowing great mobility,” Rhayem notes. “We also have a unique and patented feature, the Boom Positioning System, which allows the operator to move the load right and left at height without moving the machine, even on stabilisers.”

The man platform is the most used attachment in the GCC after traditional forks and buckets. “We are having great success, as our system is quite competitive and the remote control can also be used to move the boom to a location where the operator has better visibility,” says Rhayem. “On top of that, if you combine the rotation and extension of the platform with our Boom Positioning System, this is a perfect combo for precise placement of workers at height and more mobility without having to move the machine.”

Late last year, Bobcat launched a new range of rotating telehandlers, including the five-tonne, 21m TR50.210, which Rhayem believes will be a good fit for the region, along with the larger 25m machine. Rotating telehandlers are not widely used in the region, with many contractors using mobile cranes instead. “At the moment, there is a price advantage and it is easy to find and rent these products instead of buying.”

Due to productivity and durability, Merlo telehandlers have strong resale value, says Bodino. “We still have more room to grow in the Middle East, but the market is more and more coming to see the value of the Merlo machines.”.

Key features of Merlo telehandlers include excellent all-round visibility; hydrostatic transmission, which means the machine is easy to use; and the boom is responsive to controls and makes very precise movements. “You can give this machine to anybody and after two minutes they can use it,” says Bodino.

VOLVO TRUCKS SOUTHERN AFRICA STARTS LOCAL LNG TESTING Through fuel-efficient drivelines and chassis configurations, Volvo Trucks’ LNG range makes significant fuel and CO² savings possible. Natural gas is obviously a fossil fuel, but it can produce 20 percent lower CO² emissions than diesel.

Volvo Trucks Southern Africa has brought in two Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) trucks to be used for local testing. These gas-powered trucks have specifically been developed for heavy regional and long-haul operations.

“Many of our customers already work hard to reduce their environmental footprint. We therefore see a clear potential for LNG units as a vital part of the solution,” said Marcus Hörberg, Vice President of Volvo Group Southern Africa. “Our vision is that trucks from Volvo will eventually have zero emissions, although the way of achieving that is not by one single solution but rather through several solutions in parallel.”

Natural gas has promising potential as a substitute for diesel in trucks, with a good supply globally, and increasing availability locally. When cooled down to low temperatures, the gas liquefies (LNG) and reduces in volume, which means increased capacity to carry more fuel.

“The new gas-powered Volvo FH LNG drives and performs just like the Volvo FH you know,” said Eric Parry, Product Manager of Volvo Trucks Southern Africa. “The powertrain in the new gas-powered trucks is based on our renowned diesel engine technology. Also, by using LNG rather than Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), it is possible to carry larger quantities of fuel and thus ensure the necessary operating range for longhaul assignments.”

Volvo’s new gas-powered trucks offers the same fuel efficiency as diesel-powered equivalents and can operate at the same speed. However, since LNG is often cheaper, this offers a good opportunity to reduce fuel costs. With the 205kg LNG tank, European operators are seeing usable range of up to 1000km, this is dependent on the terrain and payload carried.

When it comes to the provision of LNG to fleets, new local developments and partnerships in the segment have resulted in the establishment of a limited infrastructure, specifically on the N3 highway between Durban and Johannesburg.

Filling LNG involves a different procedure and some safety precautions due to the low temperatures of the liquid fuel, but its neither complicated nor time consuming by comparison, when done at a commercial filling station..

MAKING HEADWAY IN MOROCCO Boubker Moukafih, Site Manager at Gravettes et Bâtiments said: “The PowerROC T35 was recommended to us by the blasting contractor we collaborate with at the quarry who also offers drilling services and owns the explosives subsupplier CADEX. Our daily production target is 2000m3 which we can now achieve in a ten-hour shift with minimal disruption.”

“Upgrading to the PowerROC T35 has also improved the working environment for our operators. The cabin is more comfortable and the joystick controls are far easier to use than the levers on our previous equipment,” added Moukafih.

In the quest to extract the quartzite at Had Soualem quarry in Morocco, the drilling team produced 12m deep, 76mm diameter blastholes in a pattern of 2.6m x 3m. By introducing the Epiroc PowerROC T35 drill rig at the site to replace old equipment, Gravettes et Bâtiments achieved major improvements on all fronts.

With high wear and tear on machines and tools, increased durability creates massive cost savings for customers, while higher productivity speeds up a job while reducing the fuel bill and machine hours.

“Total operating and ownership costs are key when developing new work tools. Cat work tools have been brought to the marketplace following the feedback gathered from demolition customers on their needs,” says Gilles Ronnet, Demolition Product Application Specialist, Caterpillar. “One of our aims during the development process is to innovate through the use of technology.”

Caterpillar’s multi-processors and pulverisers/crushers feature patented speedbooster cylinder technology, combining the benefits of the speed valve and the booster valve.

The technology reduces cycle time by up to 51% and enables the use of tools that are lighter and therefore consume less fuel, while at the same time improving crushing capability, says Ronnet.

“This can be achieved because Caterpillar designs both the machines and the work tools to deliver best-in-class products that are tailor-made for the applications. Other examples include the blank firing protection on hammers, rotating work tools that require no drain line on excavators, the auto-lube grease pump mounted on the hammers and the removable main pivot on scrap shears.”

Parts commonality between work tools is also a key feature, as it increases parts availability globally and helps provide optimum productivity to end users, says Ronnet. Meanwhile, all Cat hydraulic work tools are tested and decontaminated on a test bench prior to delivery, to ensure the product is ready to work when it arrives, and safe. “We want to make sure our customers get the right products at the right cost, on the right machines, while delivering optimum performance.”

At the moment, many contractors are throwing away money when they send material off-site. The moment that they stop throwing this material away, they start saving time and money.”

The Malagarasi Hydropower project consists of several components. It features a run-of-river hydropower plant facility plus a 54km 132kV transmission line that will connect the plant to Tanzania’s national grid. The Evander Mines solar photovoltaic plant will utilise bi-facial module technology to maximise its yield and it will be constructed on previously disturbed land owned by Evander Mines.

The proposed Salam Electric Train Project will span 90km, serve 16 stations, and connect the New Administrative Capital to al-Salam City. The Minister of Transportation has also announced plans to extend the electric train (southward) to Sports City. The extension will span 14km and serve three stations. Plans have also been announced to extend the train (northward) to El Tenth. The extension will span 5.3km and serve two stations. The project will be partly funded by a $67m loan from the Exim Bank of China.

The Evander Mines solar photovoltaic plant will provide an estimated 30% of Elikhulu’s power requirement during daylight hours and is expected to materially reduce electricity costs at this operation. Furthermore, the Evander solar photovoltaic plant is expected to enhance the reliability of the power supply during daylight hours and result in an expected CO2 saving of more than 26,000 tons in its first year of its operation.

VOLVO GROUP BEGIN CUSTOMER DELIVERIES OF ALL-ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Launching a new generation of zero exhaust emissions products, leading French contractor Eiffage has taken delivery of an all-electric Volvo FE Electric truck and a Volvo ECR25 Electric compact excavator - becoming the first recipient of the products in France.

The machines support Eiffage’s low carbon strategy and are to work on the ambitious Grand Paris Express transport project in the French capital. This is a rapid transit initiative being built in the French capital that will add 200 kilometres of new track and 68 new stations, ultimately serving two million passengers a day.

“By 2030, we want over a third of the machines the Volvo Group sells to be electric. We can’t do this alone, we want to do this together with our customers, partners like Eiffage and the wider society,” said Volvo Group CEO, Martin Lundstedt.

“Today’s deliveries of this electric truck and construction machine is the start of a revolution in transport and infrastructure solutions,” agreed Melker Jernberg, President of Volvo CE. “Make no mistake, electric machines are not going to remain a niche product area. The Volvo FE Electric 6X2 truck was built at the Volvo plant of Blainville sur Orne in France. It will be used to deliver and collect tools and spare parts for demolition works of Part 1 - line 16 and Part T2B of line 15 of the Grand Paris Express project. It will do around 150km per day - all of them with zero exhaust emissions.

The Volvo ECR25 Electric compact excavator, will be used by Eiffage in support of demolition and dismantling activities, again with zero CO2 emissions and far lower noise and vibration levels than traditional diesel engine machines.

The 2.5-ton machine has the same performance as its diesel counterpart, and its battery pack offers four hours work time, depending on application. The Volvo ECR25 Electric was developed and built at Volvo CE’s Belley factory in France..

HAREKET HANDLES HEAVY LOAD USING GOLDHOFER MODULES BORN TO

SAVE MONEY AND TIME Hareket Heavy Lifting & Project Transportation won the contract to move two 6,200t passenger ships over a distance of 250m to a floating dock at the Tersan Shipyard.

The two vessels, Havila Capella and Havila Castor, have been ordered for the Norwegian Havila Kystruten fleet and will go into service on the coastal route between Bergen and Kirkenes. About 124m long, 22m wide and 35m high, the ships are state of the art in terms of eco-friendly design and engineering. They are powered by LNG and batteries but are also designed for retrofitting with hydrogen fuel cells.

To transport the ships to the floating dock, Hareket employed a total of 200 heavy-duty axle lines with 1,600 wheels. The equipment included 56 Goldhofer PST/SL-E heavy-duty modules with hydrostatic drive and electronic multiway steering plus 36 Goldhofer conventional THP/ SL heavy-duty modules. “Although the distance to be covered with the two ships was not very long, the weight of the vessels and the handling were a major challenge for Hareket, and we are proud to have managed it in such a short time,� says Abdullah Altunkum, Member of the Hareket Board.

The operation also included moving the ships sideways by more than 2m over the short distance of the route for correct alignment with the floating dock. While the self-propelled modules with their electronic steering system could be steered using a single remote, a separate Hareket operator was needed to keep the steering of the conventional heavy-duty modules in sync. It nevertheless took the Hareket specialists only 4 days to relocate the two ships in the floating dock with a space of just 1.5m between them..

CONTINENTAL LAUNCHES CONTICONNECT LIVE Fleets with high tire costs and a high need for machine availability require constant monitoring of the tire condition.

Vehicles sometimes cover long distances, especially on large construction sites, in intralogistics or in ports, which makes monitoring tire pressure and temperature a challenge for fleet managers. Continental is addressing this issue with ContiConnect Live. In contrast to ContiConnect Yard, the live version does not require any location-specific yard station on the application site with access to the cellular network.

Instead, the data is transferred directly to a cloud and can be accessed there.

Continental is launching ContiConnect Live, the next generation of the digital solution for tire monitoring to complement ContiPressureCheck and ContiConnect Yard. With ContiConnect Live, the collected data on tire pressure and temperature are sent in real time to a cloud using a central telematics unit. In addition, the unit transmits the vehicle's location using GPS and records the operating hours of the tires. Fleet managers have a quicker and more comfortable overview of the condition of the vehicles regardless of their location. By evaluating the information, the fleet benefits from reduced downtimes, lower maintenance costs and an extended operating time. ContiConnect Live is available for all special tires from Continental equipped with sensor technology.

The fully integrated control solution for the tire condition consists of various components: The intelligent tire from Continental measures inflation pressure and temperature with the factory-fitted sensor inside the tire. The sensor data are sent in real time to the integrated central telematics unit.

From there, the data is transferred to the cloud, where it can be accessed via the web portal. In the web portal, a detailed view of the vehicle including alarm, pressure and temperature history as well as GPS data and operating hours is made available. If the data is not ideal, fleet managers are proactively informed via SMS or email, which minimizes flat tires and increases the safety of drivers and vehicles. This enables fleet managers to monitor tires flexibly, regardless of where the vehicles are located..

bauma CHINA GIVES CONFIDENCE AND HOPE TO THE ENTIRE INDUSTRY After four show days, bauma China 2020 ended on November 27. Despite the COVID-19 crisis and the latest travel restrictions, this year’s exhibition attracted 2,867 exhibitors and around 80,000 high-quality trade visitors. In these difficult times, bauma China 2020 gave the entire industry a reason to enter the coming fiscal year with confidence and hope.

Stefan Rummel, Managing Director of Messe München GmbH, was satisfied with the result: “The year 2020 was marked by special challenges. But the construction machinery industry and its economy continue to grow while the effects of the epidemic are being warded off. There is far-reaching demand for innovative technologies, intelligent and lowemission machines, and vehicles with integrated digital solutions. Hand in hand with our partners we therefore made everything possible and provided the industry with a platform even in times of crisis.”

In spite of the circumstances, bauma China was able to retain 300,000 square meters of exhibition space. 2,867 exhibitors presented their products and innovations to 80,000 trade visitors. The huge area occupied by international exhibitors such as Caterpillar, Volvo, Bauer, Terex as well as pavilions by Germany, Italy and Spain show the continued international confidence in China's growth and development.

Exhibitors and visitors had the opportunity to communicate via live chats or video conferencing. Thus, participants were able to generate greater reach and build their social networks in the construction equipment industry.

W

ith electric vehicles becoming mainstream in the passenger vehicle market, and a number of manufacturers offering and developing electric commercial vehicles, how fast will the same trend develop in the construction equipment industry? Many OEMs have been selling electric machines for years across sectors including MEWPs, mini-excavators and a wide range of mining equipment.

But the last two years have also seen an acceleration of electric CE in new segments, such as Liebherr’s LB 16 drilling rig, JCB’s one-tonne site dumper and Case Construction Equipment’s backhoe loader.

When it comes to electrification, while electric motors are simpler than diesel ones and provide excellent torque, the biggest headache for machine developers is the battery pack.

The challenge for OEMs is electrification of mid-size to large machines, which need serious power, and where fitting large battery packs is a challenge for machine designers.

Other challenges for the industry include economies of scale and standardisation. While automotive manufacturers electrifying vehicles can get discounts on battery purchases for bulk orders, construction equipment manufacturers order far fewer batteries, increasing the average cost for end users.

In the GCC, some contractors are already using electric machines for certain jobs, especially for indoor work such as in warehousing, facilities management or industrial sites with other workers nearby. Broader adoption is likely to hinge on a number of factors – the value proposition of the machines themselves, such as reliability and cost of ownership; perception of electric machines; and whether there is a drive from municipalities and other authorities, such as a preference for electric machines on jobs in residential areas. As is often the case, GCC contractors can be expected to follow trends in overseas markets like the US, Europe and Japan, rather than take lead.

But the biggest factors will be the machines that OEMs bring to market, and whether contractors can see a clear cost benefit to electric machines.

Case Construction Equipment In 2020, Case revealed Project Zeus, the construction industry’s first fully electric backhoe loader. The concept machine, the 580 EV, has the same power and performance as the equivalent diesel-powered Case backhoe loader, and is planned to remain exclusive to the North American market. Two machines have already been sold to US utilities companies.

The 580 EV is powered by a 480-volt, 90-kilowatt hour lithium-ion battery pack, enough for around eight hours of runtime depending on the application. As the battery powers the drivetrain and hydraulic motors separately, breakout force is the same as a diesel-powered machine and overall performance is improved during simultaneous loader and drivetrain operation. Apart from cutting carbon footprint, it is estimated that that the 580 EV could save fleets up to 90% in annual vehicle operating costs, through reduced spend on diesel, engine oil, diesel exhaust fluid and long-term engine maintenance.

Volvo Construction Equipment Volvo CE has been one of the most active manufacturers in the race to electrify, and sister company Volvo Trucks also plans to launch a commercially available electric semi truck.

The Volvo ECR25 Electric is a highly practical miniexcavator, the first in a new range of electric compact excavators. Its zero-tail swing radius design means it can work in confined spaces, and with zero emissions the need for costly fume extraction systems is eliminated in indoor jobs, such as basement groundworks and building demolition.

It’s also seriously comfortable for the driver due to extreme responsiveness, low noise, lack of vibration and emissions, and less dust blow. Its run time is up to four hours, and its off-board fast-charging can do an 80% recharge in one hour.

Volvo CE has also launched its Volvo L25 electric wheel loader, a 5t payload loader with an eight-hour operating charge and standard and fast-charging options. It offers a similar performance to a diesel machine, but is far quieter.

Liebherr

British manufacturer JCB has had a busy year, releasing a number of new electric machines, including a telehandler and a site dumper, as well as new power charging stations. These are by no means the first electric machines for JCB, but they are a big step forward.

German manufacturer Liebherr has a number of electric machines, including a range of large mining equipment. Notably, its LB 16 is the first battery-powered drilling rig in the world. The 55t foundation machine can be operated via mains power or battery, and faces no restrictions in performance and application compared to the conventional version, with maximum drilling diameter of 1,500mm and drilling depth of 34.5m. With no diesel engine, the machine is significantly quieter and produces no emissions, at a time when cities are introducing strict work-site regulations.

The 525-60E is a fully electric version of the popular Loadall, with the same performance as the standard diesel machine. It offers a zero-emissions load handling solution to construction, industrial and agricultural customers. Key features include dual electric motors for drive and lift, delivering increased efficiency; brake regeneration to boost battery charge; regenerative hydraulics to increase efficiency; and full shift operation capability.

The company also released its first electric site dumper, a 1t high-tip model. It replaces the individual wheel motors of the hydrostatic 1T-2 with conventional drive axles and a drop box to provide full-time all-wheel drive, with a 7kW hydraulic motor delivering drive to the drop box, while a second hydraulic pump is used to power the machine’s standard hydraulic circuit, for steering and skip lift.

The company also has a new range of JCB power stations, used by contractors or rental companies to recharge machines on-site. That includes positioning the charger in emissions-sensitive areas, such as indoors or on tunnelling projects, to provide a zero-emission recharge.

Wacker Neuson

The battery is designed to last a full 10-hour working day and can be recharged using conventional electric supply; with a 125A supply, the battery can be fast-charged in seven hours, allowing the machine to be used for a full day then charged overnight. The integrated battery blocks are mounted on the uppercarriage.

Best known for its work tools, Wacker Neuson’s electric series includes a wheel loader, track and wheel dumper, miniexcavator and batterypowered rammer, batterypowered plates, and an internal vibrator system for concrete consolidation.

Key machines include the DW15e, an articulated electric wheel dumper with four-wheel drive and a payload of up to 1.5t, while the EZ17e is an electric mini-excavator with zero tail swing.

For tools, a single battery is compatible with seven different hand tools, including three battery-powered rammers, three vibratory plates and an internal vibrator system.

Hitachi Japanese manufacturer Hitachi has a large range of specialised electric machines, most notably large mining trucks and mining excavators.

Electric engines massively reduce wear costs, including engine maintenance and of course diesel. Machines of huge size require large electrical sources, with excavators often fed by cables, while the large dumpers often run on trolley systems. Hitachi also has a range of electrical material handling machines, for use in sites such as salvage yards and dumps.

‘ELECTRIC DRIVE IS A MATURE TECHNOLOGY’ Liebherr’s mining equipment division produces a number of electric machines, including the R 9200 E, a 205 tonne excavator, and the T 236, a 100 tonne class mining truck.

When it comes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions for the mining sector, electric drive machines have a key role to play says the company.

Plant & Equipment: What are the potential cost savings for end users of adopting electric machines in the mining industry?

Liebherr: The potential direct cost savings come from the replacement of the diesel engine by the electric drive. Aside from the fuel itself, the other main cost reduction drivers are: engine fluids, e.g. engine oil, coolant; filters, e.g. fuel filters, oil filters, air filters and coolant filters (sometimes also air compressor filters); engine mid-life – replacement of injectors or the turbo charger, and complete engine replacement for the

overhaul, as an electric drive lasts two to three times longer than a diesel engine. Indirect savings can be highlighted on the main/hydraulic components due to the smoother running of the electric drive compared to the diesel engine. Less vibration and less acceleration result in extended component lifetimes.

P&E: Looking at your range of electric excavators such as the R 9200 E, are there any environmental factors that will affect its performance, or where it will have a better performance over a similar machine with a conventional diesel engine?

Liebherr: From a pure performance perspective, the electric drive is better compared to the diesel powertrain. However, there are constraints inherent to the use of the electric excavators which have to be taken into account. This includes the power network and power distribution inside the mine site – the electric excavator can only work if the right and constant power is supplied. Any network disturbance will directly affect the machines performance which could be compared to the use of poor diesel fuel quality in diesel machines.

Also, the mine layout – due to the power cable attached to the machine, an electric excavator has less mobility compared to the very high versatility of the diesel powertrain. This requires a real mind-set change for the mine organisation if they want to change over to electric excavators. The cable management can also become a tricky point, especially for the backhoe configurations as the cable will lay on an uneven floor which could damage the cable. In the last decades, 99% of the excavators have been delivered in face shovel configuration to replace or assist electric rope shovels. This experience with the cable management has made the transition to electric excavators in face shovel configuration much easier. Now, we start to operate backhoe electric machines and for that the experience with the cable management has to be gained.

P&E: Speaking generally, when it comes to electrification, are there advantages (e.g. technical or economic) for electrification in mining machines versus smaller machines such as in the construction equipment segment?

Liebherr: If the machine electrification is taken as a global mine objective with everybody supporting the project the answer is ‘Yes’. We know by experience that the cost savings are around 25% compared to diesel machines. The E-machines’ performance is better compared to diesel engines but I want to say it again, the win-win can only be achieved if everybody supports the project. Even though the constraints to implement electric machines are higher compared to diesel machines, the trend of opting for electrification is on the rise as they are directly linked to overall greenhouse gas emissions reduction strategies.

P&E: Apart from cost and productivity, what are some of the reasons that operators want electric machines? One trend we see globally is ESG investing, and examination of listed companies’ activities and emissions by investors. Is this a factor in mine operators sourcing electric machines?

Liebherr: Since the signatory of the Paris agreement, 188 countries are currently committed to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The mining industry is also an actor in this transition and has started to take environmental engagements with dedicated investments and defined calendars. The mining industry alone cannot cover the full picture; they need all the stakeholders on board to achieve their goals.

Beside all the existing solutions such as Hydrogen, Ammoniac, and Fuel Cell where there are many unknowns and a lot of challenges (e.g. storage, distribution, Health & Safety, maintenance, etc.), the electric drive is positioned as a mature technology. The electric drive has been used for more than 50 years worldwide. The technology is well mastered, including the additional CAPEX/OPEX compared to diesel machines, the difference in machine maintenance, and the skills you need to maintain it. In comparison to fuel cell or hydrogen where workforces do not exist at this stage or only for very specific cases, workforces for high voltage skills are readily available..

TADANO DEMAG INTRODUCES THE AC 450-7 ALL TERRAIN CRANE

T

he crane manufacturer from Zweibrücken, Tadano Demag, said the basic idea when developing the new AC 450-7 was to “give wheels” a more powerful alternative to its existing six-axle cranes, with the objective to keep it as compact as its counterparts despite the additional axle, all while combining that with significantly better performance.

In terms of its dimensions, the AC 450-7 meets this criterion, having a carrier length of only 15.99m, an 8.45m outrigger base, and a total length of 17.62m.

“In other words, it doesn’t need more space than a six-axle

crane at a work site, and yet it offers significantly better lifting capacities,” said Michael Klein, Product Marketing Manager at Tadano Demag.

The new AC 450-7 features an 80m main boom with a maximum lifting capacity of up to 195.5 tonnes. If the main boom’s length is not sufficient, it can, for example, be extended with a luffing jib with a maximum length of 81m.

The crane’s maximum system length is 132m. The luffing jib can be “divided up” in three-meter segments from 24 to 81 meters.

New SSL Superlift design The SSL Sideways Superlift system not only makes the new AC 450-7 part of the large crane category at Tadano Demag, but also means that the latter will represent more than one debut: Tadano Demag is using its new engineering design for the Sideways Superlift system for the first time ever on the AC 450-7.

The AC 450-7 can lift 73.5 tonnes at a radius of 9m when equipped with a 60-meter main boom with an SSL

configuration. 37.9 tonnes at a 13m radius when the boom is telescoped out completely to a length of 80m and an outstanding 12.8 tonnes at a radius of 50m with this configuration.

Improved counterweight design The maximum counterweight for the AC 450-7 is 150 tonnes. It consists of a 20-tonne base plate and redesigned counterweight plates that have been optimized in terms of swing radius, which is now only 5.60m. The counterweight

plates are available as 10-tonne plates, 5-tonne plates, or a combination of the two, with the goal being to enable customers to optimize their transportation logistics.

The base plate can be set up from the front - an advantage that is particularly beneficial at work sites where space is tight, and the corresponding transportation truck can only be positioned in front of the crane. There is an optional counterweight frame available for the AC 450-7 that can be used to increase the swing radius in order to further increase the lifting capacity especially when using an SSL configuration.

Demag Surround View The new optional “Demag Surround View” makes it easier for the crane operator to position the AC 450-7 at the job site.

This patented system uses the six crane cameras to display the possible outreach of the outriggers as well as the tail swing radius at the current position of the crane in a computer-aided display. Demag Surround View also supports the driver on the way to the construction site. The cameras can deliver images of the crane side areas when turning, facilitating the crane driver to detect cyclists, pedestrians, or any obstacles.

Flexible traveling capabilities The AC 450-7 is available with two different carrier variants to meet axle load requirements all over the world. In the standard version the AC 450-7 can be configured to travel under a 12-tonne or 16.5-tonne axle load limit, in both cases with the main boom in place. Moreover, if the main boom is removed, the maximum axle load is reduced to just a bit over nine tonnes with a gross vehicle weight below 48 tonnes.

“With this solution we provide our customers another possibility to reduce gross vehicle weight,” Klein explained.

“The quick connections allow our customers to remove the outrigger box very quickly.”

Powerful start-up and safe braking The AC 450-7 convinces in driving mode on the road as well as on the construction site. It is equipped with a MercedesBenz transmission with turbo retarder clutch for wear-less and powerful start-up paired with an integrated high-performance primary retarder. Drivers benefit from sensitive starting and shunting and don’t have to worry about temperature problems.

Looking deeper into the drivetrain design, Demag leaves nothing to be desired: all seven axles on the AC 450-7 are steered, while four of them are driven. This makes the AC 4507 so maneuverable that it can navigate tight work sites at least as well as a six-axle unit.
