It will primarily supply 225,000 barrels a day of low-sulphur fuel oil (LSFO) to local power plants besides producing jet fuel, kerosene and naphtha feedstock for petrochemical plants. The cost of the new 615,000 barrels-per-day Al Zour refinery is estimated to be around $15 billion. The Kuwait Integrated Petroleum Industries Company (KIPIC), a subsidiary of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation, will operate the refinery, petrochemicals and LNG import operations at the Al-Zour refinery project. The new refinery is designed to process 615,000 barrels a day (bpd) of light Kuwait export crude (KEC), or 535,000 barrels a day of mixed heavy crudes. Fluor’s joint venture (JV) COOEC-Fluor Heavy Industries (COOEC-Fluor) fabrication yard in China has completed the pipe spool fabrication for the Al-Zour project in Kuwait. Elevators manufacturer Otis, a subsidiary of United Technologies Corporation, has secured a contract to supply 190 elevators for the $4.3 billion second passenger terminal at Kuwait International Airport (KWI). UK architecture firm Foster + Partners designed the terminal, which is being built across 70.8ha by Turkish-based Limak Insaat and local construction company Kharafi National. Under the contract, which was awarded by Limak Insaat Kuwait, Otis will deliver 171 Gen 2 and 19 heavy-duty elevators with capacities to move up to 5,000kg and up to 10 tonnes respectively. The units feature Otis technology such as Regen Drive, Gen 2 flat-coated steel belts and Pulse monitoring systems. Upon completion, the terminal will serve a new regional air hub in the Persian Gulf. It will initially accommodate 13 million passengers per year, with the flexibility to increase to 50 million passengers under future development.

A group led by Austrian builder Strabag SE has won a EUR-340-million (USD 373 million) contract to construct the 250-MW Hatta pumped storage power plant in the emirate of Dubai. The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has contracted Strabag to design, build and commission the facility in the Hajar Mountains. The Austrian firm will make a turbine shaft with a diameter of about 36 metres and a depth of nearly 70 metres to house two 125-MW Francis-type pump turbines. Strabag’s share of the total award is 35%, equal to EUR 118 million. The other members of the consortium are compatriot plant engineer Andritz AG, which will supply the entire electro- and hydro-mechanical equipment for the two turbines, and Turkish construction company Ozkar Insaat. Andritz’s share of the contract amounts to EUR 100 million. The startup of the plant is scheduled for the first quarter of 2024. This will be the first such project on the Arabian Peninsula.

Sharjah-based real estate developer Arada is planning to launch an urban $6.4 billion mega-project in Riyadh, similar to its Aljada development in Sharjah, UAE, in the first quarter of 2020. The mega project will combine entertainment, residential, commercial and sports components. Further details about the project will be revealed in the first quarter of 2020. Currently, 12 percent of Arada property buyers in its Sharjah projects are from Saudi Arabia. The developer expects the number of Saudi buyers to increase after it opens its first sales office in Riyadh in December 2019.

Oman’s health ministry has announced plans to build the sultanate’s first medical city over a sprawling 5-million-sq-m area in the Barka region. The project, being developed at a cost of RO479 million ($1.24 billion), is yet another initiative under the country’s Tanfeedh programme for economic expansion, which aims to wean the country away from primarily oil-and-gas-based sources of income. The country’s ambitious healthcare project, the Medical City is being built in four phases. The first two phases will focus on commercial operations, private medical facilities, and residential projects, while the other phases will be allocated for government use.

Saudi Aramco is planning to construct an underground sales gas storage facility with a storage capacity of 1,500 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) expandable up to 2,000 MMSCFD. More than 65 percent of the factory’s production will be exported to the regional markets as the plant will produce various steel products that are used in the manufacture of refrigerators, generators, panels, steel roofs, and heavy structures for large commercial and residential buildings.

Dubai Government investments in roads and transport infrastructure saved AED169 billion between 2006-2018 • 9 success factors of infrastructure projects management • 9 elements for building a successful project management system Roads and Transport Authority - Mohammed Al Munji: HE Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) revealed that investments of Dubai Government in roads and transport infrastructure, estimated at AED100 billion, had generated economic benefits in terms of saved time and fuel wastes in the order of AED169 billion between 2006 and 2018. The benefit-cost ratio of Dubai Metro is expected to reach 2.5 by the end of 2020, and rise to as much as 4.3 by the end of 2030, according to a technical study conducted by a British University. Al Tayer made these remarks during the key session of the World Road Congress 2019 in Abu Dhabi in the presence of top officials of several entities from the UAE and abroad. 16 PlantAndEquipment.com | November 2019

And no wonder it kept its ranking of being first in the world in the quality of roads throughout 2013-2017. Such investments had also benefited the competitiveness of the UAE in hosting global events, such as Expo 2020,” commented Al Tayer. “The improved mass transit systems of Dubai contributed to increasing the share of public transport in the total mobility journeys from 6% in 2006 to 17.5% in 2018. Moreover, the improved road projects together with the awareness programmes in place, contributed to reducing road accident fatalities from 21.9 cases per 100 thousand of the population in 2006 to 2.4 cases per 100 thousand of the population in 2018, thus dipping by as much as 89%,” he explained.

Shrewd Leadership “Effective leadership warrants a clear vision and close follow-up, be it through meetings or periodic field visits. It also requires timely and well-rehearsed decisions, technical expertise built on different information sources, and playing an effective role in achieving results through the power of persuasion,” said Al Tayer. He recapped RTA’s experience in the construction of Dubai Metro project and the instrumental leadership of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, VicePresident and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, in delivering the project on time. He sighted the recurrent visits of HH during various phases of the project, noting that such an approach was also applied to other mega projects such as Dubai Tram, Dubai Water Canal, and the ongoing Route 2020 project for extending the Red Line of Dubai Metro to the site of Expo. “All projects undertaken by RTA in Dubai are guided by a clear vision for the infrastructure sector in line with Dubai Plan 2021 as well as the close follow-up to inspect the project progress at site,” commented Al Tayer.
“RTA has access to a variety of finance sources including the private sector. It applies the principles of transparency, future foresight and the use of sophisticated technologies. For instance, in 2017, RTA constructed the Enterprise Command and Control Centre (EC3), the biggest transportation and traffic control centre in the world, which was inaugurated by HH Sheikh Mohammed. It enabled increasing the coverage of intelligent traffic systems in the Emirate from 11% to 60%. Core Constituents Al Tayer reviewed the core elements of successful projects management highlighted by establishing a project management office, projects priorities, project programmes management, risk and challenges management, electronic project management, stakeholder relations management, asset lifecycle management, value engineering, and knowledge-sharing platforms. Reflecting on projects priority setting, Al Tayer said, “The system has a key role in delivering RTA’s strategic plan. It enables the selection of the best project portfolio to realise RTA’s strategic objectives within budgets in hand. It is based on a whole host of standards such as value engineering and an integrated enterprise system. The implementation of such parameters contributed to saving billions of dirhams over the past three years. For instance, the implementation of such principles to Shindagha Bridge brought back savings of about AED316 million, thus reducing the cost by 50%, thanks to a revision of the arch design turning it into just an architectural shape.”

latest NEWS // WORLD ROAD CONGRESS As for knowledge-sharing platforms, Al Tayer referred to Dubai International Project Management Forum; Dubai World Congress for Self-Driving Transport (first in MENA region), and Dubai World Challenge for Self-Driving Transport with prizes amounting to AED19 million. Lessons Learned Al Tayer reviewed lessons learnt from two mega projects recently accomplished by RTA: Dubai Metro and Dubai Water Canal. He listed five points learned from Dubai Metro: clear responsibilities of respective parties, competent internal technical team, engaging the operator right from the design stage, appointing safety auditor from the start of the project construction, and preparing a complete time-chart for all project works. He identified three lessons learnt particularly from Dubai Water Canal project: the first is the implementation of value engineering, which saved about AED one billion from the project cost. The second is the partnership with the
private sector, which eased the pressure on the government budget. The third is the attention to environmental aspects; which resulted in improving the quality of the Creek Water by 33%. Al Tayer concluded by stressing the importance of investing in infrastructure. He stated that Dubai Government infrastructure investments amounted to AED100 billion, which generated savings amounting to AED169 billion between 2006 and 2018. These savings were in the form of economic benefits such as the reduced time and fuel waste associated with traffic congestions. “However, investments should not be restricted to infrastructure, and should rather extend to include continuously empowering Emirati human resources. The success of projects is primarily based on the leader, clear vision, direct impact, and close field follow-up. It all goes down to the quote of HH Sheikh Mohammed: “Zayed had initiated the fieldwork…. And we will continue the march.”

he Southeast Asian trade show for construction and infrastructure; and the International exhibition for the Asian concrete sector - were successfully held from 5 to 7 September 2019, at IMPACT Exhibition and Convention Centre, Bangkok, Thailand. The market for off-road engines in the Middle East remains stable but a number of political and economic uncertainties could easily upset the balance. At the same time, demand for gensets is in constant flux. Goldhofer Consolidating its Position on the Indian Market

oldhofer AG (Memmingen/Germany) and Francis Klein Machine Tools (FKMT) Technologies LLP (Bangalore/India) have signed a Joint venture agreement for the production of ground handling equipment. The subject of the agreement is the production and sales of the Goldhofer range of cargo and aircraft tow tractors for the Indian market and the establishment of a service hub and training center there. According to the plan, the first phase of operation in Bangalore will involve the manufacture of conventional »BISON« aircraft tow tractors and »SHERPA« baggage and cargo tow tractors. The agreement with FKMT Technologies will enable Goldhofer to intensify its activities in the Airport Technology division in one of the world’s fastest growing ground handling markets. “The joint venture agreement signed today is a first important step for us to respond to the growing demand for our airport vehicles on the Indian subcontinent. The predicted doubling of air traffic volumes in India by 2027 will only be possible with the help of more aircraft and thus more tractors. Electric Material Handler in Finnish Pulp Factory Exceeds 50,000 Operating Hours
T
he Liebherr material handler has been working practically non-stop for a good 6 years, on average 21 hours 45 minutes a day. The material handler has already processed a total of approx. 20 million cubic metres of wood, which is equivalent to roughly 4 million work cycles. The operating weight of the ER 954 C High Rise is 97,000 kg. The electric material handler is equipped with a 250 kW electric motor for the regular continuous work. With the electric drive Liebherr offers an economically interesting alternative to the conventional drive machines and also an environmentally friendly solution. The material handler is also always available as no refuelling is required. Service-oriented machine assembly There are weekly and annual inspection works in the factory’s wood processing. These production interruptions are used for maintenance work on the various machines.

Mammoet Method Allows for Swift Converter Exchange
M
ammoet was recently called on by a Gulf Coast spent acid regeneration facility to replace an aging acid converter vessel. Built several decades ago, the exchange of this 750-ton converter vessel was a critical part of an upgrade to the plant. Tailor-made solution completes exchange never attempted before at plant. The project needed to be executed within restricted available space and with as little disturbance as possible to nearby components and units that had been upgraded in a previous shutdown. The limited space, as well as strict ground bearing pressure requirements, made the use of heavy equipment challenging. So Mammoet devised a tailor-made cradling solution that could overcome these challenges and provide the precision and control to move the delicate vessel - a feat never attempted at this particular plant. Historically, the exchange of converters is a time consuming and space intensive process, involving stick building and demolition that extends turnarounds and increases risks. In recent years, advances in technology have changed tank designs in such a way that new vessels can be moved in one piece. However, while the vessels now have this potential, they have very specific support conditions around their foundations that must be upheld to prevent damage to the sensitive internal linings of the converter. 42 PlantAndEquipment.com | November 2019
In response to these requirements, Mammoet designed a jack and slide system that could cradle both vessels by their foundations in order to elevate and slide them into place with the utmost control. In order to lift the vessels, Mammoet’s crew installed custom beams that were narrow enough to slide between the foundation and still have the capacity to cradle the entire 750-ton piece. These beams were then attached to jacking components set up on each side of the vessel and rested on a pair of 500 Te climbing jacks positioned at each end. First, to remove the old vessel, this complete arrangement was jacked up, lifting the converter in the process. It was then skidded out of the unit directly onto waiting SPMTs which had been placed under a total of 332 meters (1,090 feet) of skid track. The SPMTs then transported the vessel out of the facility. Mammoet was then tasked with placing the new converter in the center of its foundation so the piping would align for proper installation. By reversing the operation method mentioned above, the team ensured that the new converter could be properly installed. This installation included aligning the skid track on SPMTs at precisely the right angle to ensure that the vessel would clear the steel of the existing unit by the allotted 2 ½ inches. Once cleared, the team positioned the trailers to ensure the skid tracks lined up with markers inside the unit and the converter’s rotation was correct before skidding the converter into its final position.

Deployed in the High Mountains 40 ton SENNEBOGEN Duty Cycle Crane Supports Construction Work 2,200 m above Sea level
I
n the Fragant group of power plants in the Möll Valley, Austria, Kelag is currently carrying out extensive repair work on the Feldsee and Wurten dams. Work on the foundations of the Feldsee dam is particularly challenging - Porr Bau GmbH is using two large drilling machines to repair the underground seal with an interlocking bored pile wall. A 640 E Sennebogen duty cycle crane is being used to speed up the construction process. The Fragant group of power plants in the Möll Valley is a mainstay of safe and reliable power supply in Carinthia. It consists of storage and pumped-storage power plants, and run-ofriver power plants. Kelag began with the construction of the Fragant group of power plants in the 1960s. Kelag is the leading energy service provider in Austria and through Fragant has an annual production of around 790 million kilowatt hours, the equivalent of the annual requirement for around 225,000 households. “Investing in existing power plants and storage systems is one of our most important roles as a

producer of electricity. We need to keep them in good condition so that we are always in a position to meet our customers’ demands,” explains Manfred Freitag, Director at Kelag. “The Fragant group of power plants is the centerpiece of our electricity production, parts of the systems are more than 50 years old. This is why we are currently working on two big storage repair projects high in the mountains, we are investing a total of €13 million here.” Whilst Feldsee is used as an upstream storage reservoir, Wurten is mostly used as a downstream storage reservoir for the Feldsee pumped-storage power plant. The asphalt surface sealing on the almost 50 year old Wurten dam has been replaced. This work was completed in September. Challenging work site: 2,200 m above sea level, 30 m thick glacial moraine, snow drifts and 314 bored piles The Feldsee dam, 2,200 m above sea level, is built on a 30 m thick glacial moraine. Due to continuous leaks from the Feldsee dam, the

In order to be able to raise the water level again, an interlocking bored pile wall has been produced the whole of which will be embedded into the rock. Kelag Project Manager Mario Körbler, “The bored pile wall is being created with a continuous row of 314 interlocking bored piles which will have a total length of around 6,000 m.” Around 15 specialists are needed each day on the construction site high in the mountains to keep the progress of the project on track. Project manager Körbler, “For one 30 m long bored pile we need five mixer loads of concrete. This requires careful organization by the team, especially when there are snow drifts on the mountain roads which is possible even in May.” 40 ton SENNEBOGEN duty cycle crane an important service provider and “joker” In addition to the large drilling machines, the 640 E Sennebogen duty cycle crane with its 40 ton load capacity is an important service provider on the building site. Designed for particularly challenging, dynamic applications with numerous attachment options, the machine can be used in a wide variety of ways. Precisely because of this multitude of potential applications, the crane was delivered early on in the project and was used to help install site equipment. As Joseph Warum, machine specialist at IBS GmbH in Ardagger Stift, points out, “The Sennebogen 640 E duty cycle crane can make full use of all its strengths on this project. Its telescoping undercarriage means it is easy to transport, it is flexible and easy to operate. It has already demonstrated this when setting up the site. The fact that it can operate as a crane, excavator and grabber means that it offers powerful support to the rotary drill machines, from moving heavy components via the threads of the reinforcement cages to surveying and loading operations. Not least, it also acts as a kind of joker when a pile gets stuck. This can easily happen as we are dealing with drill depths of up to 30 m.” The 40 ton duty cycle crane is particularly suited to underground engineering with its robust construction, powerful multi-circuit hydraulic system and strong rotary drive. Two 12 t freefall winches provide optimum traction. These are also available in the heavier 16 t version as an optional extra. With a maximum boom length of
up to 41.1 m, an optional auxiliary boom and fly boom, and its 186 kW engine, the duty cycle crane is also ideally equipped to operate as a crane with a load capacity of up to 40 ton. High quality teams and machines Martin Rapp, Project Manager, Porr Bau GmbH, explained the procedure to Austrian industry magazine, Baublatt.Österreich, “The excavation needs to be supported to protect the piles. The loosened material is supported by either the drill auger or bucket and the boring tube is driven into the ground in advance. Once the drilling process is completed, the drilled pile is surveyed. This is where the Sennebogen 640 E is put into operation with our surveying system. Any discrepancy between the bored pile and the planned position is ascertained and the data is assessed immediately. It says a lot about the quality of the teams and the equipment that we haven’t had any discrepancy problems with the bored piles.” The project is completely on track, despite adverse weather conditions from March to May which often meant it was only possible to work two or three day weeks. Work on the Feldsee reservoir will be finished by the end of October.

Two Raimondi Topless Tower Cranes at Work in Historic District of Florence, Italy

he two cranes, a Raimondi MRT159 fitted with the Deluxe R16 Crane Cabin and a Raimondi MRT84, were installed on the Via San Paolino, situated in front of the Santa Maria Novella church, one of Florence’s best known historic sites. “We were pleased to take part in this important project in such a revered district in Florence. It required intense jobsite preparation as both cranes - positioned on embedded elements - had to meet strict provisions set by the archaeological superintendents that are put in place to protect the country’s historic structures and sites,” said Luciano Friso, Managing Director, Assistedile. The cranes, on rent to Milan-based Ediltecno Restauri Srl., are estimated to be required onsite for approximately 16 months. “Assistedile and Ediltecno Restauri have a long relationship, and we are proud to continue to collaborate closely with a respected company that is certified to work on structures of immense historic, cultural and architectural value,” said Friso, adding that Raimondi’s

Technical Department in Legnano also supported the jobsite planning. The cranes, chosen for the flexibility of the machines’ structural configurations and sourced from the existing Assistedile fleet, are participating in the build of a new luxury hospitality property, as well as the renovation and recovery of the San Paolo Apostolo church and convent, more commonly known as San Paolino. Crane configuration flexibility was required to continue to allow the entrance of vehicles into the jobsite, and to accommodate the extremely complicated logistics and viability of the project in the center of Florence. In addition to the install procedures, Assistedile will also handle the dismantle once the jobsite requirements are met. Manitowoc MLC300
Helps Accelerate Bridge Replacement in Washington
C
eccanti, a Tacoma, Washington-based construction company, needed a crane with superior maneuverability that could handle heavy loads at great heights to assist with the replacement of an old wooden bridge in Ridgefield, Washington. The contractor found the MLC300 crawler crane had the right features to get the job done in the shortest time possible. “We chose the MLC300 because of its superior capacity at radius and its maneuverability when compared to similar cranes in its range, and even larger cranes,” said Jake Brockmoller, project manager at Ceccanti. “This crawler crane’s radius allowed service of 75% of the job with help from the derrick barge. We would have certainly lost time and money if we had deployed other equipment.” The work in Ridgefield started last February. Initially, the contractor had the job scheduled to take 14 months to complete, but now it is going to wrap up approximately five months ahead of schedule, in November. By then, the single-lane wooden bridge will be replaced by a two-lane concrete bridge that will pass over railroad tracks on the opposite riverbank. of the river. From there, the crane enabled Ceccanti to set shaft cages, position casings, place girders and all other construction support to take place without moving. The MLC300 lifted girders as heavy as 66.5 USt to heights of 65 ft and rebar cages as heavy as 61 USt to as high as 125 ft. Western Pacific Crane & Equipment (Western Pacific) was instrumental in helping Ceccanti find the best crane to efficiently complete the job in Ridgefield. Working from its Arlington, Washington regional facility, Western Pacific consulted with Ceccanti on the nature of the project and helped the company conclude that the MLC300’s strong load chart at long radii would be needed for the lifts from one side of the river. Western Pacific helped Ceccanti determine that the company could save money by deploying the MLC300 over alternative lifting strategies. The MLC300 features a 386 USt capacity and 334.6 ft boom, which can also be fitted with a 315 ft luffing jib. It comes standard with Manitowoc’s CCS (Crane Control System) that offers a user-friendly interface, two full-graphic displays mounted horizontally for better visibility, a jog dial for easier data input and ergonomic joysticks.

5 Common Operating Errors and How to Avoid Them
O
perator behaviour not only affects machine health but also the productivity and profitability of the entire site operations. Here are five of the most common operating errors to watch out for. 1. Not leaving a machine to idle for a few minutes before shutting it down If an operator consistently shuts down their machine without letting the engine idle for a few minutes first, eventually it will lead to damage or even failure of the turbo charger, which can be very expensive to repair. Volvo CE recommends operators always leave the machine to idle for two to three minutes before completely switching off the engine. 2. Going From Forwards To Reverse (Or Vice Versa) At High Speed Over a long period of time, regularly shifting the travel direction of a wheel loader at high speed can lead to driveline failure. Considering transmission replacements can cost huge sums, this is one operating error every machine owner should avoid. Volvo CE recommends operators always bring the machine to a complete standstill before going from forwards to reverse or vice versa. 3. Using The Wrong Excavator Work Mode Some excavator operators may think that using the highest work mode - Heavy (H) - will help them achieve the highest productivity. 4. Applying The Brakes Too Often And Not Using The Retarder Some articulated hauler operators may have a habit of ‘riding the brakes’. Resting a foot on the brake pedal, however lightly, means the hauler has to work harder to maintain speed and the brakes wear faster. Using the brakes to maintain a steady speed while travelling downhill, instead of the retarder, has a similar effect. Unnecessary wear to the brakes leads to unnecessary brake replacement costs. 5. Overusing The 6X6-Wheel Drive Combination On An Articulated Hauler Volvo articulated haulers feature differential locks that allow the operator to choose between 4x6 and 6x6-wheel drive combinations, depending on how much traction they need. The 6x6 combination delivers excellent control and stability on difficult terrain but if operators use it when they don’t need to, they can waste a lot of fuel and cause unnecessary wear to the tyres. Gentle Treatment of RAP Pays Big Dividends Preserving Bitumen Reduces Operating Costs
A
n innovative RAP-processing machine is preserving unprecedented levels of bitumen, helping Asphalt producers drastically reduce operating costs. The Ammann RSS 120-M with Primary Shredder, Screen and Secondary Shredder handles recycled material more gently than a traditional crusher. That special treatment has a substantial benefit. “The advantage of this machine is that we can reuse the recycling material without damaging the bitumen coating on the stone surface,” said Gerrit Lennips, Territory Manager Plants Benelux. “We have a residue of approximately 5%, while the competition has residue of 20%.”. What makes the RSS 120-M different from traditional crushers? The Ammann machine disaggregate the bitumen-coated stones instead of crushing it, minimising the need for reapplication of the petroleum-based material. Netherlands, has been quick to take advantage of the RSS 120-M. The contractor has utilised the machine on a variety of jobsites as it incorporates high percentages of RAP into its mix. Using less bitumen reduces costs, as does using RAP instead of new aggregate. Additional Benefits The RSS 120-M also greatly reduces fines, leading to a host of advantages. “With fewer fines, you have better control of your RAP quality and obviously you have better control of your emission quality,” said Jian Qiu, Research and Development Adviser at BAM. Fines tend to be sticky – especially in the RAH dryer – which hinders efficiency and leads to increased maintenance costs. “The amount of material you put into the machine and the waste you get from this machine is a lot less than if you compare it to other machines on the market,” Lennips said.

This is very beneficial to the performance of the mixture during service. Using the Ammann shredder reduces another operating cost: fuel consumption. “The fuel consumption of the RSS 120-M is very low compared to other crushers,” said Arie Van Dodewaard, Service Partner at Ammann Benelux. “Our average fuel consumption is 15 litres per hour.” Utilising the RSS 120-M is extremely straightforward, Heijmans said. “This machine is very suitable for asphalt granulates because all handling is completed in a single operation,” he said. “Simply put in the raw material and it’s reduced and screened to the requested fractions.” Production is notable, with the machine processing an average between 80 tonnes (slabs) and 120 tonnes (milled) of material per hour. The shredder is ready to work soon after arriving on the jobsite. “Setting up this machine takes between 15 minutes and half an hour,” said Van Dodewaard. Mobility is an additional key feature. Operators use a remote control to relocate the machine around the jobsite. “The machine is completely mobile due to its tracks, remote control and easy transport operation,” said Arjan Heijmans, Plant Manager of BAM Helmond. “It’s actually quite simple.”

Longer travel distances between jobsites require haul trucks. The mobility makes the loading process extremely easy. “The machine is able to drive itself onto the low-load trailer,” Van Dodewaard said. No special transport permissions are needed. Steps to minimise maintenance time and costs were taken during the design of the RSS 120-M. “Replacing the screen inserts is a very simple process,” Van Dodewaard said. “This was a priority during development of the machine. The replacements can be made in a very short time. Maintenance of the machine is very easy.” All service points and fluid ports are easy to access. “In addition, there are long service intervals for wearing parts,” Van Dodewaard said.

The belts’ specifications mean these are absolutely ideal for the Indian market. “Both have been designed for demanding drives and are proving very suitable in Mahindra’s machines in light of the challenging requirements posed by Indian agriculture,” says Thorsten Schwefe, who is responsible at Continental for technical sales of power transmission belts for the agricultural industry. “One of the measures of good performance is sustained, high power transmission.” The belts also feature excellent temperature resistance - and are therefore designed to cope with operation in tropical zones. Both heavy-duty V-belts are dust-resistant and conditionally oil-resistant. For technical components such as heavy-duty V-belts, the region-specific weather conditions prevailing in India, which rigorously test both the material and the design, are especially challenging. Muddy fields, oppressive heat and a harsh environment mean in particular that maintenance of the belts is not always easy,” declares Schwefe. Local production enables proximity to the customer and the market Continental ships around 500,000 belts annually to Mahindra. They are mainly used in tractors and combine harvesters on the Indian market, but also in many other Asian countries, such as China, Indonesia or Thailand. Local manufacturing in Sonepat means not only that Continental can deliver the belts very promptly, but also that in-house experts can provide advice and assistance on the ground: “For our customers, high quality, on-time-to-requirement delivery and a good price/performance ratio are crucial factors. Our ability to manufacture and provide advice locally is the icing on the cake,” emphasizes Schwefe. Another reason for the high demand for components and solutions for the Indian agricultural industry is that fast-growing rice and cereal varieties, often leading to two and three harvests annually, are now commonly planted - calling for an even higher level of technical support. “The Indian market is very dynamic. The agricultural industry there is still in its infancy in terms of technologization and automation. The market has great potential for the future and therefore remains a really exciting prospect for us as a technology company - and not only for belts,” says Schwefe. This potential relates not just to original equipment. Continental also supplies the Indian agricultural machinery manufacturer with belts for its aftermarket business. “Our partnership with Mahindra is an example of how well their OEM and their aftermarket business can go hand in hand - and how much confidence there is in our products and our local production in India. Because we can operate so flexibly locally, we can guarantee reliable delivery of the belts,” says Schwefe.
Tough climatic conditions make great demands on technical systems According to the Statista statistics portal, India is the seventh-largest country in the world with an area of 3.3 Thorsten Schwefe million square kilometers and has a population of approximately 1.33 billion. Only China, with about 1.4 billion, has an even larger population. Even though the Indian subcontinent is becoming more and more industrialized, agriculture is still a very marked feature of the country. Around half the population work in the sector or are subsistence farmers. India’s agricultural industry is greatly dependent on the weather conditions, not least on the monsoon that affects the climate in a large part of the country in the period from July to October. The south has a tropical climate, while the rest of the country experiences subtropical weather. Humid heat, boggy ground and ankle-deep water in which both people and machines are immersed are therefore also defining features of the planting and harvesting of rice, which is the staple food in India and throughout Asia. At the same time, it is just one example of the demanding requirements made of technical systems and workers in the field by Indian agriculture. Because even though India is the second-largest producer of rice in the world, in its more arid regions in particular it mainly grows other crops, such as millet, wheat, pulses, potatoes and fruit. The commonest agricultural machines seen at harvest time are from Mahindra. They are the dominant feature of Indian fields. Continental belts are making a major contribution to increasing harvest efficiency in India’s agricultural sector, a market that will require further technical solutions in the future.

When It Comes to Asphalt Recycling, It’s All about the Perfect Process Chain
I
n order to turn aggregates and bitumen into asphalt for road construction, a thermal mixing process is needed - this is what an asphalt mixing plant is used for. When it comes to the production of this “black gold,” an increasing number of companies around the world are discovering that reclaimed asphalt pavement, or RAP for short, is a valuable resource. This also means that millions of tons of asphalt are being removed - a job primarily performed by cold milling machines. They are the first link in the process chain, which continues with crushing and screening plants as well as asphalt mixing plants in the next step and ends with the reclaimed asphalt being repaved by pavers as part of the new mix. Machines designed to work together, innovative processes, and state-of-the-art technologies all have a major impact on the efficiency of this process chain. Smooth processes make it possible to increase the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of asphalt recycling.

The Challenge: Increasing the Feed Volume of RAP In many countries, virtually every truck that transports asphalt mix on a site has at least some recycled asphalt on it. In Germany alone, for example, a quarter of the total asphalt produced in 2018 (41 million tons) contained RAP (10.5 million tons). With a total of around 12 million tons of asphalt pavement removed last year, this represented a recycling rate of 87%. Recycling old asphalt is an economic imperative in order to conserve natural resources. As a result, the industry is constantly looking for solutions to optimize the processes within the asphalt mixing plant. One of the main approaches is to increase the volume of reclaimed asphalt pavement used in all of the different recipes produced using “hot and cold” processing technologies. Using the maximum amount of old asphalt not only protects the environment, it also positively affects asphalt mix prices.
latest NEWS // WIRTGEN In the traditional parallel flow recycling method, the temperature is limited to 130 °C due to the exhaust gas emissions, but the exhaust gas temperatures are physically higher, which leads to increased energy consumption and the need for additional dedusting. In order to achieve a mix temperature of 160 °C, white mineral must be overheated in this case. The Solution: The Counterflow Method Recycling Rate of 90 + X% Unlike conventional parallel recycling drums, in a recycling drum with hot gas generator the recycled material is heated indirectly using the counterflow method, meaning that the material in the drum flows towards the heat source. This makes it possible to achieve higher material temperatures while simultaneously reducing the exhaust gas temperature. The outflow temperature of 160 °C corresponds to the temperature of subsequent processing, while the exhaust gas temperature lies above the dew point at approx. 100 °C. The entire process is only possible by using a hot gas generator, because direct firing would burn the recycled material and make it unusable. The burner, hot gas generator, recycling drum, extraction hood, and the recirculation and exhaust air system are all designed to work in perfect harmony. One positive effect is that the white mineral no longer has to be overheated, which results in a significant reduction in energy consumption. Recycling using the counterflow method massively reduces
emissions (as required by Germany’s Technical Instructions on Air Quality Control regulation) and - depending on the quality of the recycled material - achieves recycling rates of 90 + X%. This makes an investment in the equally green and efficient technology particularly attractive. And the technology becomes even greener when the upstream process steps - processing the particle-size distribution curve (PSD curve) and milling the asphalt - are implemented using state-of-the-art processes and technologies. Screening Plants: Ideal Particle-Size Distribution Curve Increases Amount of RAP Added The maximum theoretical amount of RAP that can be added to the mix depends largely on its PSD - or, to put it another way, on the quantity, size, and composition of its constituents. As a result, one goal must be to align the PSD curve of the crushed RAP as closely as possible to the desired PSD curve of the final asphalt product. This is where mobile screening plants come into play. They ensure that the mixing plants are able to directly process up to 80% of the reclaimed asphalt (milled material). This significantly reduces process costs compared to post-processing all of the milled material. In the case of complete post-processing, i.e. also of the remaining oversize grain, impact crushers equipped with a secondary screening unit would also be used.

latest NEWS // WIRTGEN Intelligent Milling for Cost-Effective and Sustainable Recycling First, however, the RAP must be recovered by removing individual layers of the road structure. By removing the asphalt in layers using cold milling machines, the milled material can be fed into the material cycle for reuse separately for each type of mix, depending on its structural suitability and its qualitative properties. The selective recovery of the surface course, binder course, and base course alone offers significant environmental and financial advantages. If intelligent milling technology is also taken into account, it increases the cost-effective reuse of the milled material in the asphalt mixing plant even further. This is largely due to the cold milling machines’ load-dependent water sprinkling system. In this context, the water used to cool the picks varies depending on the engine load and milling speed. Water consumption can be significantly reduced by automatically activating the water system when
the milling drum is in use or by switching it off when the milling operation stops. Specifically, this can cut water consumption by up to 20%. As a result, the service life of the picks is extended, the cold milling machine’s water tanks have to be filled less frequently, and downtimes are shorter. This not only pleases the milling machine operator, but also the master mixer in charge of the asphalt mixing plant. They benefit from the low water consumption because it means the milled material has a 3-4% lower residual moisture content per ton of asphalt. Without the use of state-of-the-art milling technologies, the residual moisture level would be higher. The formula applicable to the drying process required to produce the new asphalt in the asphalt mixing plant is simple: Material that is 1% drier saves 1 liter of heating oil per ton of finished asphalt during subsequent processing into recycled mix - as well reduced CO2 emissions due to the process requiring less energy.

ining and rock excavation underground face the challenge of improving both productivity and safety. Artificial Intelligence can be part of the solution. Today the mining industry is under increasing pressure to supply more minerals to meet the needs and expectations of a rapidly rising world population. This often requires extracting from greater depths, which in turn can create challenges when equipment needs servicing or repair.
The principle is that OptiMine® Analytics transforms data into process improvements using the analytics functions of IBM Watson IoT. This information management system allows mining companies to combine equipment and application data from disparate sources in real time, analyzing patterns in the data. Everything is focused on improving availability, utilization and performance. Jan Ekstrøm at IBM also highlights preventive maintenance as a key to more cost-efficient mining.
“Identifying maintenance requirements before something breaks down enables us to make major direct savings in costs and time,” says Patrick Murphy, President of the Rock Drills & Technologies division at Sandvik. That is why Sandvik is working with IBM to introduce advanced analytical cognitive data processing and modeling based on data generated by sensors on loaders and trucks.
“If you organize maintenance into a specific plan, you will always know if you have done too little [because] you get problems with your equipment,” he explains. “But you won’t know if you’ve brought in too much maintenance, which, of course, isn’t cost-efficient either, because all maintenance costs both time and money. That’s why data driven maintenance is by far the best method.”

It’s even more of a challenge now that mining is taking place at lower and lower levels.” To meet this challenge Sandvik has acquired Newtrax, a digital mining technology provider. The acquisition will help Sandvik create conditions for establishing an IoT network in a
range of mining environments and for obtaining real-time information from the devices and equipment used in mines. Sandvik and IBM clients such as Petra Diamonds and Barminco are using IoT to reduce miner exposure to hostile work environments and to increase safety. OptiMine® Analytics is scheduled to be used by Vedanta Zinc International’s Black Mountain Mining (BMM) operations in South Africa’s Northern Cape Province, to accelerate datadriven operations for safety, efficiency and productivity for trucks, loaders and drills. Additionally, Hindustan Zinc, one of the world’s largest producers of zinc, lead and silver, has tapped Sandvik to implement a major digital transformation at its Sindesar Khurd Mine in India. The aim is to ensure that all required infrastructure and platforms can achieve worldclass mining safety, efficiency and productivity.

he 1165 is a mid-sized harvester well suited for thinning, selective cut and final fell applications. Redesigned with performance, uptime protection and operator comfort in mind, the E26 offers the same bold, distinct design excavator operators have come to expect from R-Series models. Minimal tail overhang allows the E26 to work in limited-space environments, including construction, landscaping and utility jobsites and agriculture applications. The excavator’s boom swing frame stays within the width of the machine’s tracks as it swings, making it easier to perform in confined jobsite conditions and next to buildings or other obstructions where larger earthmoving equipment, such as a tractor loader backhoe, can’t fit. aterpillar Inc. announces the availability of the RM400 Rotary Mixer. The new RM400 replaces the RM300 Rotary Mixer and offers many new features and enhancements including 19% more power, an enhanced operating environment, and better maneuverability. These features help contractors achieve the demanding job specifications in both full-depth reclamation and soil stabilization applications. The machine delivers a 2.4 m (8 ft.) cutting width and weighs in at 23 500 kg (51,809 lb.). Efficient Power, Increased Mobility The CatÂŽ C9.3 engine provides 311 kW (417 hp) of power and meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V emission standards. Standard all-wheel drive utilizes four independent drive pumps for maximum torque while providing excellent traction and greater speed for moving around the job site. An operating length of 9.56 m (31.4 ft.) is 44 cm (17.3 in.) shorter than its predecessor, the RM300. Four rotor options are available for a variety of applications. A universal rotor can be used for either full depth reclamation or soil stabilization and is equipped with 200 pointattack carbide-tipped tools. A soil rotor is used for a variety of mixing and stabilization applications and blends additives with semicohesive or granular materials and is equipped with 238 point-attack, carbide-tipped tools. The combination rotor is designed primarily for use in soil stabilization applications in cohesive materials, but also works well for light asphalt
reclamation. The combination rotor is equipped with 114 point-attack, carbide-tipped tools. A spade rotor is also available. The highly productive spade rotor is utilized solely for mixing soils and is fitted with 58 bolt-on spade tools. Simplified Service Daily service points are grouped and easily accessible. The engine hood easily tilts forward with the flip of a switch for easy access to the cooling system and engine. The cooling system utilizes a variable speed fan that can be set to periodically reverse direction for short intervals during operation. This unique design helps the system shed accumulated dust and keep the system cleaner for maximum efficiency and extended service intervals. An optional onboard air compressor combined with the tilting rotor hood and large, rear discharge door makes changing rotor bits quick and easy.

احدث االخبار //مؤتمر الطرق الدولي السادس والعشرون منصات تبادل املعرفة ،أشار الطاير إلى أما بخصوص ّ منتدى دبي العاملي إلدارة املشاريع ،ومؤتمر دبي العاملي للتنقل ذاتي القيادة ،الذي يعد األول من نوعه على مستوى الشرق األوسط واملنطقة ،وتحدي دبي العاملي للتنقل ذاتي القيادة ،ويبلغ مجموع جوائزه قرابة 19مليون درهم. الدروس املستفادة وناقش الطاير أهم الدروس املستفادة من مشروعني كبيرين نفذتهما الهيئة في الفترة املاضية ،وهما مترو دبي ،وقناة دبي املائية ،ولخص الدروس في مشروع مترو دبي في خمس نقاط هي :توضيح مسؤوليات األطراف العاملة كافة في املشروع ،ووجود فريق فني داخلي مؤهل ،وإشراك املشغل من بداية مرحلة التصميم ،وتعيني مدقق السالمة مع بداية تنفيذ املشروع ،وإعداد برنامج زمني متكامل لكافة أعمال املشروع ،فيما لخص الدروس املستفادة من مشروع قناة دبي املائية في ثالث عناصر هي :تطبيق الهندسة القيمية ،حيث ساهم تطبيقها في توفير ما يقارب مليار درهم من تكلفة املشروع ،والشراكة مع القطاع الخاص لتخفيف العبء على موازنة الحكومة ،ومراعاة الجوانب البيئية في املشاريع حيث تم رفع جودة املياه في الخور بنسبة %33
نتيجة مشروع قناة دبي املائية. واختتم الطاير كلمته بتأكيد أهمية االستثمار في البنية التحتية موضحا أن استثمارات حكومة دبي في البنية التحتية للطرق واملواصالت والتي تقارب 100مليار درهم، أدت إلى توفير 169مليار درهم بني عامي 2006و2018 كعائد اقتصادي مثل تقليل الوقت والوقود املهدرين في االزدحامات املرورية كما أكد أن االستثمار ال يجب أن يقتصر على البنية التحتية ،بل يجب أن يشمل االستثمار في الكوادر البشرية املواطنة وتمكينها وتطويرها بشكل مستمر وأكد الطاير أن نجاح املشاريع وتميزها يعتمد بشكل رئيسي على دور القائد من خالل الرؤية الواضحة ،والتأثير املباشر على كافة املستويات ،واملتابعة املستمرة في امليدان، كما قال صاحب السمو الشيخ محمد بن راشد آل مكتوم، نائب رئيس الدولة رئيس مجلس الوزراء حاكم دبي (رعاه اهلل) "بناها زايد في امليدان..........وفي امليدان سنكمل املسيرة".

استثمارات حكومة دبي في البنية التحتية للطرق واملواصالت وفرت 169 مليار درهم بني عامي 2006و2018 • 9عوامل للتميز في إدارة مشاريع البنية التحتية و9 عناصر لبناء منظومة ناجحة إلدارة املشاريع هيئة الطرق واملواصالت ـ محمد املنجي: كشف سعادة مطر الطاير ،املدير العام ورئيس مجلس املديرين في هيئة الطرق واملواصالت ،أن استثمارات حكومة دبي في البنية التحتية للطرق واملواصالت التي تقدر بنحو 100مليار درهم ،ساهمت في توفير 169مليار درهم بني عامي 2006و 2018عائد ًا اقتصادي ًا ،مثل تقليل الوقت والوقود املهدرين في االزدحامات املرورية ،فيما يتوقع أن تصل نسبة املنافع إلى التكاليف بالنسبة ملترو دبي ،قرابة 2.5بنهاية عام ،2020و 4.3بنهاية عام ،2030وذلك وفق ًا لدراسة فنية أجرتها احدى الجامعات البريطانية، جاء ذلك خالل مشاركة سعادته في الجلسة الرئيسة للمؤتمر الدولي للطرق 2019في أبو ظبي ،بحضور عدد من املسؤولني من الهيئات واملؤسسات من داخل الدولة وخارجيها.

عقدا أبرمت شركة أوتيس Otisالشركة تابعة لشرك التكنولوجيا المتحدة ً ، United Technologies Corporation مصعدا بمبنى الركاب الثاني في مطار الكويت الدولي ( )KWIبقيمة 4.3مليار دوالر ،قامت شركة الهندسة لتزويد 190 ً المعمارية البريطانية فوستر +بارتنرز( )Foster + Partnersبتصميم المبنى الذي يتم بناؤه على مساحة 70.8هكتار بواسطة شركة ليماك إنسات ( )Limak Insaatالتركية ومقرها خرافي ناشيونال. مصعدا مصعدا من النوع 2 Genو 19 وبموجب العقد ،الذي منحته شركة ليماك إنسات الكويت ،ستسلم أوتيس 171 ً ً للخدمة الشاقة مع قدرات لنقل ما يصل إلى 5000كجم وما يصل إلى 10أطنان على التوالي ،تتميز الوحدات بتكنولوجيا أوتيس مثل دافع ريجن Regen Driveواألحزمة الفوالذية المسطحة 2 Genوأنظمة مراقبة نبضية ،وعند االنتهاء سيعمل مستوعبا في البداية 13مليون مسافر في السنة ،مع توافر المرونة جديدا في الخليج العربي، إقليميا جويا ًا المبنى ً ً ً كمركز ً الالزمة لزيادة عددهم إلى 50مليون مسافر قيد التطوير في المستقبل.

ستزود في المقام األول 225000برميل من زيت يوميا لمحطات الوقود منخفض الكبريت (ً )LSFO الطاقة المحلية إلى جانب إنتاج وقود الطائرات والكيروسين والنافتا كمادة وسيطة لمصانع البتروكيماويات ،تقدر تكلفة يوميا بحوالي 15مليار دوالر ،ستقوم الشركة الكويتية المتكاملة للصناعات مصفاة الزور الجديدة البالغة 615ألف برميل ً البترولية ( - )KIPICوهي شركة تابعة لمؤسسة البترول الكويتية -بإدارة عمليات التكرير والبتروكيماويات وعمليات يوميا من استيراد الغاز الطبيعي المسال في مشروع مصفاة الزور ،تم تصميم المصفاة الجديدة لمعالجة 615،000برميل ً يوميا من الخام الثقيل المختلط. خام الكويت الخفيف للتصدير أو 535،000برميل ً قام المشروع المشترك ( )JVفلورللصناعات الثقيلة COOEC-Fluorمع ( )COOEC-Fluorفي الصين باالنتهاء من تصنيع بكر األنابيب لمشروع الزور في الكويت ،و لتحقيق إنجاز أعمال التصنيع قامت COOEC-Fluorبتسليم أكثر من 95000بكرة أنابيب من خالل تصنيع 337000متر خطي من أنابيب الكربون والسبائك والفوالذ المقاوم للصدأ.
