CLEAN ENERGY

IMDAAD SETS UP REFUSE-DERIVED FUEL PLANT IN THE UAE Reiterating its commitment to sustainability and innovation, Imdaad, one of the largest integrated facilities management companies in the Middle East, has set up an innovative refusederived fuel (RDF) plant in the United Arab Emirates. The newly built waste-to-fuel treatment plant has been established at the company’s state-of-the-art material recovery facility, FARZ, in the National Industries Park. The advanced RDF plant possesses the capacity to treat 300 tonnes of incombustible and unrecyclable waste and convert it into clean energy suitable for industrial use and manufacturing processes. This will empower Imdaad and FARZ to divert a significant amount of municipal solid waste from landfills, aligning with the UAE’s larger environmental mission. Established in 2020, FARZ can treat 1,200 tonnes of waste per day, of which 50 percent are reclaimed as recyclable valuables. However, the remaining waste refuse is directed to the landfill. With the establishment of the advanced RDF facility at FARZ, the remnants of the recycled waste can now be converted into clean energy to power various industries.

8

The clean energy generated can either be used to power the plant or easily be stored, transported, and supplied to power other industries, such as cement factories as an alternative to coal and other fossil fuels. Through these efforts, Imdaad continues to solidify its position as technology-driven leader within the waste management sector, contributing to environmental protection and sustainable economic growth..

LONG-LASTING QUALITY

RISAL BUYS A LIEBHERR LTM 1120-4.1 IN SAUDI ARABIA with a low number of hours of use. And that’s exactly what we found at Liebherr.”

RISAL, a Saudi Arabian corporation, has received a used Liebherr mobile crane: the LTM 1120-4.1, manufactured in 2022. The 120-tonne crane is the most powerful 4-axle mobile crane on the market and also has the longest telescopic boom in its class. At RISAL, the Liebherr LTM 1120-4.1 will be used for loading work.

The LTM 1120-4.2 is from 2022 and was previously used in Germany. Together with Saudi Liebherr Company Ltd. and in consultation with the used crane experts based at the manufacturer’s plant in Ehingen, RISAL decided to have some minor maintenance and servicing work carried out on the crane. Following its adaptation to the country-specific requirements and thanks to the renowned long-lasting quality of Liebherr mobile cranes, the used crane was nearly a brandnew crane.

The young LTM 1120-4.1 is a used crane and the first mobile crane to join the fleet at Rawabi Industrial Services (RISAL). The modern crane is optimally equipped with Liebherr’s innovative technologies such as VarioBase and VarioBallast.

The company RISAL, which employs around 1,500 people, offers a full range of industrial and environmental services. These include, for example, a wide range of cleaning and waste disposal services. Mansy added: “We will use the LTM 1120-4.1 for loading and offloading operations in Saudi Arabia at one of the largest energy and chemical companies in the world. For this, we need reliable equipment. Liebherr mobile cranes have convinced us due to the high quality of their products and their reliable after sales service. We are looking forward to a long-term partnership with Liebherr.”

Mahmoud Mansy, Supply Chain Manager at RISAL explained: “We chose this crane because it matches our requirements perfectly in terms of lifting capacity and boom length. It is exceptionally powerful, has a long telescopic boom and can be used flexibly. We were also looking for a young used vehicle

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE

CDE PLANT OPTIMISES CONCRETE MIX FOR ONE OF THE LARGEST URBAN DEVELOPMENTS IN KSA Founded in 1980, the Al-Jazera Concrete Company (JCC), which has operations in Taif, Saudi Arabia, has commissioned a new sand wash plant engineered by wet processing experts CDE as it continues to support the development of the City of Roses project. Madinat Al Wurood, also known as the City of Roses, is a new suburb located in the north of the Taif governorate. Under the supervision of the Ministry of Housing, the project, part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030, will see the development of over nine million square metres of land, including 112km of road networks and 5,400 residential villas in its first phase alone. JCC, a key supplier in the realisation of the ambitious project, produces and supplies readymix concrete of varying strengths to largescale public works and infrastructure projects throughout the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. With a view to further improving the efficiency of its operation, the compressive strength of its concrete, and to reduce the environmental footprint associated with concrete production, JCC partnered with CDE to design and engineer a wash plant to efficiently process and enhance the sand equivalent (SE) value of its crusher fines. “The use of unwashed crusher fines in concrete production can impact upon the end use of the final concrete product, rendering it unsuitable for higher value construction applications,” said CDE’s Regional Manager for the Middle East & Africa, Ruchin Garg. “It can also increase the requirement for cement in the concrete mix in order to achieve the desired compressive strength, a costly process both commercially and environmentally.” “Concrete is, by its very nature, a highly taxing industry on the environment. From cement manufacturing to water consumption, the process leaves a considerable environmental footprint which we’re committed addressing,” said JCC’s Taif Area Manager, Abdelmajeed Al Kurdi. CDE’s significant presence in Saudi Arabia was major factor in the decision to partner with the washing experts, Al Kurdi added. “Washing materials is an entirely new direction for our company and so we sought more than technology, more than a supplier. We sought a partner, and given CDE’s presence and solid reputation in the local market, we trusted the quality of its equipment and the expertise of its team.” With a view to increasing the SE value of JCC’s feed material, CDE proposed a wash plant set up comprising two of its patented EvoWashTM sand classification and

14

dewatering plants coupled with its AquaCycleTM thickener for water management. A compact, modular sand washing system, CDE’s EvoWash washes and deslimes the crusher fines by ensuring low moisture product with the help of its high frequency dewatering screen. The hydrocyclone technology provides unrivalled control of silt cut points and eliminates the loss of quality fines. Working in tandem, CDE’s AquaCycle offers an alternative to water extraction from natural sources and the costly process of pumping water to the plant, especially in arid regions where water resources are not readily available. It significantly reduces water consumption by ensuring up to 90% of process water is recycled for immediate recirculation around the plant. Processing up to 300 tonnes per hour (tph) of material, the CDE solution is producing 200tph of 0-5mm sand with a final SE value of 88%, up from around 50% prior to commissioning and significantly exceeding acceptance criteria of 70%. “Already, the integration of our first CDE wash plant into the operation has transformed our business and given us a competitive advantage in the local market. We’re able to exceed expectations and that will position us well for future success as we tender for high value projects of major public interest,” added Al Kurdi..

IVECO DRIVES THE WAY

Trucking innovator, IVECO, fresh from launching its new image, logo and trucks in Barcelona last year, remains focussed on a sustainable transformation into the future respecting people and the environment.

T

adds Falati. In Iraq from 2021, IVECO has made considerable in-roads with its heavy-duty range - the IVECO S-Way and IVECO T-Way trucks, for both on-road and off-road missions.

The last three years have seen major events and projects happening here - the Dubai Expo 2020, large-scale construction projects such as the Kuwait Bridge and the Metro in Riyadh. All these have needed massive government investments leading to heightened demand. “It’s a clear opportunity, our expansive product line-up from logistics and transport to construction, oil and gas tick all the boxes. Saudi Arabia, UAE and Oman are our biggest markets, Iraq as well,”

The launch in Barcelona - November 2023

he Middle Eastern market is rapidly evolving. With governments investing heavily in a multitude of sectors to diversify their economies, there is an increasing demand for materials handling equipment, transportation equipment as well as commercial trucks. “The Middle East region is a crucial geographic area, not only for its position but also for the abundant presence of raw materials,” says Shahram Falati, Business Director of IVECO Africa & Middle East. Commercial trucks are gaining in popularity in the MENA (Middle East and Northern Africa) region for their use in specific sectors such as mining, oil & gas, and construction.

IVECO is focussed on getting to know its customers and is introducing, following the actual regulation, the Heavy Range “DRIVE THE NEW WAY’ in the regional market with events organized in collaboration with its dealers. “Our trucks have seen a positive response from our clients for not only these heavy-duty trucks but also our light range,” continues Falati. He places a lot of importance on their dealer network: “A sound dealer network ensures a quick aftersales service and easy availability of spare parts. That is one of our substantial strengths as our dealers are spread out all over the Middle Eastern countries,” he continues.

Last year in Barcelona, IVECO presented its renewed product and service range for Euro VI countries. “This event was organised to draw attention to the company’s intent, which

is to move into the future with our MY24 range, a state of-the-art product that comes complete with a full set of aftersales solutions,” adds Falati. With this event, IVECO also displayed its new brand identity which is a new logo that comes with a flash of blue that represents the entire concept of this transformation. IVECO invested a billion Euros (the biggest investment the company has made till date) to renew its entire range. This revamp is based on the company’s four main pillars - business productivity, driver experience, sustainability, and connectivity. The innovations in the MY24 range are built around customers and to make drivers’ lives easier while carrying out their

jobs. The main improvements of the MY24 range relate to propulsion, hence the introduction of a new engine in the heavy vehicle segment as well as ergonomics to make the experience driver-centric with a car-like functionality. It comes with a bigger goal - that of sustainable transformation. IVECO intends to develop electric versions of its light and heavy ranges with responsive and improved internal combustion engine vehicles. “Our products for the Middle East have to fulfil the regional regulations,” says Falati. The MY24 range is only available in the Euro VI markets. IVECO intends to offer its new product line-up as soon as the region introduces this European Emission Standard.

Middle Eastern customers have access to IVECO’s Heavy Rang which includes the IVECO S-Way and the IVECO T-Way. Both trucks come with recently renewed driver optics, and offer a complete portfolio suited for every heavy-duty mission. The IVECO T-Way achieves performance, reliability, and versatility for its owner. The IVECO S-Way can be purchased in three different specifications: ON, ON+ and OFF. The ON specification is suited for long haulage on highways where fuel economy is key; the ON+ set-up is best for regional and light off-road missions and It is an ideal trade-off between performance and reliability. The IVECO S-Way OFF comes as a solution between the IVECO S-Way and the IVECO T-Way.

Technology IVECO knows that technological transformation is the key to enter the future of truck manufacturing. Reducing the carbon footprint and becoming carbon neutral is important to provide a concrete solution that respects people and the environment. The company is using innovation to pursue decarbonisation of transport. It is already using a multi-energy approach that includes biomethane, electric battery for light and medium range missions, and cell electric fuels for complete decarbonization of long-distance transport as well as the heaviest duty jobs.

Driver at the centre

In the IVECO T-Way, the entire driver area is created to provide a practical and easy-to-live-in environment. The cab, available in two versions, AD short cab and AT long cab, has the driver friendly design of the IVECO Way range. The ergonomic driver’s seat as well as the multi-function steering wheel, ensures excellent driver comfort. Since driver safety is predominant in the severe conditions typically faced by the IVECO T-Way, the vehicle is designed to provide maximum protection, also thanks to the new EBS (electronic brake system). IVECO has invested in its new brand image at the right time when the global and regional market need a sustainable solution, paving its way to a bright future..

Drivers, as well as fleet owners, are at the heart of the company’s every development process. “We can easily say that vehicles may be considered to be a second home for drivers, especially for long distance drivers. Therefore, diver ease and safety are mandatory for us,” says Falati. IVECO trucks come with the necessary comforts that offset driving hours. The IVECO S-Way which is currently offered in the Middle East, for example, has an ergonomic layout of the controls ensuring an easy reach to all key functions on the dashboard. Additionally, the multi-functional steering wheel has all the driver needs at his/her fingertips, eliminating distractions. The new design also has direct visibility with one-piece side windows and rearview mirrors.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - WHEEL LOADERS

STRENGTH AND VERSATILITY Equipment experts from Al-Bahar and Powerplus discuss current requirements for wheel loaders in the Middle East and how they expect regional demand to evolve during 2024.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - WHEEL LOADERS

job site wouldn’t be complete without a wheel loader or two. For decades, these powerful machines have played an instrumental role in the delivery of large-scale projects across the world, carrying essential materials from A to B safely, quickly and efficiently. Despite a range of supply chain-related challenges during recent years, this segment has continued to demonstrate impressive resilience and growth. According to Future Market Insights, the value of the global wheel loader market is expected to pass $19 billion within the next four years, with an anticipated compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.1 percent during the period 2022-28. The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) looks set to drive a sizeable portion of this growth thanks to a slew of ongoing construction and infrastructure developments. More than $100 billion worth of projects were awarded in the region during the first six months of last year, according to data from JLL, contributing to a pipeline whose estimated value stands in excess of $3 trillion. As nations such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt push ahead with ambitious gigaprojects over the coming years, it seems safe to say that wheel loaders will continue to be in high demand among regional contractors.

Samer Ismail is Product Manager – Earthmoving and Excavation at Mohamed Abdulrahman Al-Bahar. As Caterpillar’s official dealer in the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar, Mohamed Abdulrahman Al-Bahar (AlBahar) is well-versed in supplying wheel loaders that meet the exacting requirements of end users across the Gulf. Samer Ismail, the company’s Product Manager – Earthmoving and Excavation, says that regional demand for these units remains very healthy.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - COVER WHEEL STORY LOADERS

“Al-Bahar’s overall performance was great throughout 2023 as we continued to support our customers in acquiring the right machines at the right time,” he tells Plant & Equipment. “This resulted in massive growth in sales. Thanks to the strong pipeline of projects across the segments of construction and oil and gas, we have continued to dominate the markets in which we operate. For this reason, we are forecasting further increases in sales to customers during 2024.” Marcus Ong, Chief Executive Officer of Singaporeheadquartered equipment manufacturer Powerplus, has also enjoyed a productive 12 months. “Our organisation performed relatively well in MENA territories in 2023,” he explains. “This region has been one of our main markets since Powerplus’ inception. Our appointment of Gargash Motor & General Trading as our exclusive distributor for the UAE and the supply of equipment to Saudi Arabia through Al-Futtaim Auto & Machinery Company (FAMCO), coupled with an ongoing boom in construction projects, has resulted in an overall improvement during the post-Covid period. “We also appointed a new distributor in Libya, Almassar Alhadeeth for Heavy Machinery and Equipment, and our existing dealer in Algeria – with whom we have worked for the past decade – succeeded in re-obtaining its import licence after changes in government policy some two years ago,” Ong adds. “Consequently, Powerplus is now registered as two of the 24 permitted resellers of construction equipment in Algeria.”

30

Commenting on current requirements for wheel loaders in the Middle East, Al-Bahar’s Ismail says: “Cat wheel loaders have proven to be a huge success. They are in demand among all types of customers, including owners, fleet managers and operators. The incorporation of advanced technology, best-inclass quality and unbeatable fuel savings are helping us stay ahead of the competition. Caterpillar has developed a range of innovations for the specific purpose of saving end users time and money.” Ong and his colleagues are witnessing significant demand for Powerplus wheel loaders as well, especially in the markets of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, Lebanon and Libya. The manufacturer’s units are also active across a range of high-profile projects in the UAE, including Emaar Properties’ premium lifestyle development, Arabian Ranches III. However, he notes that the availability of Chinese machinery has led to a degree of price competitiveness within this segment. “In order to overcome this price war with the Chinese brands, we are adding new features,” Ong explains. “These include AI capabilities, imported components such as ZF transmissions from Germany, and premium hydraulic parts from Danfoss and Permco. We also offer the option of piston pumps for our wheel loaders, differentiating us from most units produced in China, which typically feature gear pumps as their only option. “Such improvements to our core products, including bulldozers, excavators, off-road dump trucks (rigid & articulated dump trucks) and wheel loaders, help us to stay ahead of our competitors,” he says. “We are mainly focusing on capacities

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - WHEEL LOADERS

Marcus Ong is Chief Executive Officer of Singaporeheadquartered equipment manufacturer, Powerplus. which we share and agree with, the factors that influence purchasing decisions are product branding, quality, aftersales support, payment plans and resale value,” he explains. “This is why Powerplus is so stringent when selecting distributors. We only work with established companies capable of delivering customer experiences that exceed end users’ expectations.” Commenting on the most sought-after wheel loaders in AlBahar’s portfolio, Ismail says: “The Cat 966 is currently our most popular model as it is ideally suited to the construction activities undertaken by our customers. This machine is efficient in meeting users’ expectations in terms of durability, reliability, productivity and fuel efficiency.” suited to agricultural and construction-related applications, as the larger categories used in the mining sector are still dominated by market leaders like Komatsu,” Ong continues. “Demand for wheel loaders in the Middle East is still rather stable, but we see a trend towards larger capacities. While we offer traditional diesel-powered wheel loaders with rated capacities of up to 7.5 tons, we are also in the research and development stage of producing hybrid-powered and fully electric models. We expect our first prototypes to be ready by the midpoint of this year.” Of course, wheel loaders are not the only option available to contractors, so what factors influence customers when it comes to their purchasing decisions? “Cat wheel loaders are known for their versatility,” says Ismail. “You will literally find them working on every type of worksite across the Middle East, from small residential developments to large-scale projects such as airports, highways, quarries and aggregates sites. They stand out from the crowd due to their long-term durability and their capacity to perform a wide range of applications within budget. From material handling and truck loading to general construction and tough applications, these units can perform a variety of jobs at the worksite. Fuel efficiency, high levels of productivity and easy serviceability are also key factors that appeal to end users.” Ong says there are various elements that influence the buying behaviour of Powerplus customers, not all of which are specific to wheel loaders. “From the perspective of our distributors,

“The Powerplus PP938T-VI, PP968T-VI and PP980T-VI wheel loaders are in highest demand among our regional customers at present,” Ong points out. “These models are well suited to the Middle East as they feature commonly used bucket capacities of between two and four cubic metres. The Powerplus PP980T-VI, for instance, features a Cummins engine, an imported German ZF 4WG210 Ergopower transmission and Meritor axles. “Furthermore, over the last two decades, we have periodically refined our wheel loaders to cope with the harsh climate and working environment of the Middle East, integrating features such as enlarged radiators, reverse fans, desert air filters and more,” he adds. So, how is regional demand for these units likely to develop over the coming 12 months? “With the staggering growth of infrastructure projects and construction activities throughout the Middle East, demand for wheel loaders looks set to grow aggressively in 2024,” says Ismail. “These powerful machines deliver high levels of productivity and low costs while maximising safety on worksites. As the region’s construction industry continues to thrive, Al-Bahar expects the requirement for Cat wheel loaders to remain high.” Commenting on Powerplus’ projections, Ong concludes: “We expect to see growth of 10 to 15 percent in the wheel loader market in 2024, thanks to the increasing number of large-scale projects taking place across the Middle East.”.

G

eneral Motors and Komatsu will co-develop a hydrogen fuel cell power module for Komatsu’s 930E electric drive mining truck, the world’s best-selling ultra-class haul truck. GM, a leader in hydrogen fuel cell technology, and Komatsu, a global manufacturer of mining and construction equipment, will jointly design and validate the technology. Lightweight and quick to refuel, hydrogen fuel cells are ideal for electrifying applications traditionally powered by diesel engines. Hydrogen provides an effective method to package large quantities of energy onboard the vehicle, without compromising payload carrying capacity. Additionally, fuel cells provide an excellent zero tailpipe emissions solution for vehicles with extreme hauling requirements, like the Komatsu 930E mining truck, with its nominal payload of 320 tons. These vehicles typically operate at a single mine throughout their life, which simplifies the challenges of sizing and deploying an effective hydrogen refueling infrastructure to service the vehicle fleet. “At GM, we believe fuel cells can play an integral role in a zero-emissions future, helping to electrify heavier-duty applications, beyond passenger vehicles,” says Charlie Freese, executive director of GM’s Global HYDROTEC business. “Mining trucks are among the largest, most capable vehicles used in any industry, and we believe hydrogen fuel cells are best suited to deliver zero emissions propulsion to these demanding applications.” Komatsu’s fuel cell-powered mining trucks will provide an additional pathway for decarbonization beyond battery-trolley or battery-static charging solutions, without the need for additional charging infrastructure within mines.

52

Komatsu has set a target of reducing its global emissions by 50% by 2030 and a challenge target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The plans for achieving these goals include reducing and eliminating emissions within the company’s product offerings, as well as in the company’s facilities and production of its products. Komatsu also works closely with its customers on reducing and eliminating emissions during product use through optimization programs supported by Komatsu technology and service solutions. GM’s target is to be fully carbon neutral in both products and operations by 2040. “Finding new ways to power the equipment our customers need to do the vital work of mining and construction is a critical part of our commitment to supporting a more sustainable future,” says Dan Funcannon, Vice President of North America Engineering and Development for Komatsu. “This is essential work that requires cross-industry collaboration, and we are excited to be working with GM on this important solution for a haulage offering without tailpipe emissions.” GM and Komatsu intend to test the first prototype HYDROTECpowered mining vehicle in the mid-2020s at Komatsu’s Arizona Proving Grounds (AZPG) research and development facility. This vehicle will be powered by over 2 megawatts of HYDROTEC power cubes. GM has been conducting fuel cell research and product development for more than 50 years and is one of the only companies with advanced, homegrown technology platforms for both lithium-ion batteries and hydrogen fuel cells. GM and Komatsu believe these complimentary technologies can help spur the adoption of lower-emission mobility solutions and help other industries beyond passenger vehicles meet their sustainability goals..
