ILC OF KUWAIT BOOSTS GROVE FLEET WITH A YEAR OF RECORD PURCHASES

One of Manitowoc’s most important customers in the Middle East is celebrating a record year of purchases. Integrated Logistics Company (ILC) received 20 GMK4100L-2 cranes in 2023 and is now the largest owner of this model in the Middle East. The company also added 10 of the GMK6300L-1 cranes plus its first GMK5250XL-1.

All the new cranes will be based at the company’s branches in Kuwait and Qatar. The 31-crane deal also makes ILC the single largest purchaser of Grove cranes in the Middle East for 2023 and it now has Grove cranes in its fleet.

“After all these years working together, we have built a strong and trusting relationship with Manitowoc, and Grove is our favorite brand because of the high build quality of its cranes,” said Saleh Al Huwaidi, CEO of ILC. “The tough Mercedes engines, superb Allison and Mercedes gearboxes, MEGATRAK suspension, and highly efficient hydraulic and electrical systems combine with a strong structure to provide the reliability and durability demanded by our customers.”

The GMK4100L-2’s unique abilities make it perfect for tasks at oil and gas refineries as well as major construction projects. Refinery work typically requires access to tight spaces, so the compact size of the GMK4100L-2 is a major asset. It has an overall length of just 13.21m and width of 2.55m, even when carrying up to 21.2t of counterweight. Combined with the standard 8x6x8 axle arrangement, this allows operators to work with ease while taking full advantage of its compact operating radius.

The 300t, six-axle GMK6300L-1 also offers load charts that are ideal for refinery work. It is just over 4m longer than the GMK4100L-1, at 17.6m and 3m wide. With its seven-section MEGAFORM boom extended to 80m, it can handle 14t at a radius of up to 28m. At its maximum, the crane can handle 1.7t at a 74m radius. For construction work, where loads must be elevated even higher, its hydraulically adjustable 37m fly jib boosts reach 120m..

LOYAL CUSTOMER ACT ORDERS 18

LIEBHERR CRANES IN SAUDI ARABIA

Arabian Consolidated Trading Est. (ACT) has made a significant order with Liebherr, with the Saudi crane and heavy haulage firm ordering 18 new cranes in December 2023.

The Liebherr subsidiary in Saudi Arabia, Saudi Liebherr Company Ltd, ensured a smooth partnership and reliable services.

ACT bought its first crane from Liebherr back in 1987 and now operates over 190 Liebherr cranes. Of great importance to the Saudi Arabian company is Liebherr’s fast and reliable customer service, which ensures that crane downtimes are minimised.

“With Liebherr cranes, we can be sure of generating a good return on our investment. That is, of course, important to us,” said Mohammed Hassan Al Naimi, CEO ACT Group.

The major order, which ACT has now placed with Liebherr, consists of three LRT 1100-2.1 rough-terrain cranes, and 15 all-terrain cranes, of which seven are LTM 1120-4.1 and eight are LTM 1150-5.3.

“The LRT rough terrain cranes convinced us with their simplicity. They are self-explanatory and at the same time very safe to use,” said Al Naimi.

ACT also chose the LTM 1120-4.1 crane: one of the more powerful 4-axle crane on the market. The boom of this 120-tonne crane is also the longest in this crane class and has high lifting capacities. In addition, ACT placed orders for a total of eight LTM 1150-5.3 machines.

One of the main application areas for the new cranes will be refineries, where high safety standards are required. ACT has about 1,000 employees and operates a fleet of around 250 cranes. Headquartered in Jubail, the company has offices in Dubai, Riyadh, Dammam and Yanbu. The company’s focus is on crane rental and operations in refinery maintenance and decommissioning..

HD HYUNDAI CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT WINS LARGE ORDER FROM SAUDI ARABIA

HD Hyundai Construction Equipment announced the signing of a supply contract for 100 large excavators with Al Rawaf Consulting Company, a leading construction firm in Saudi Arabia.

Under this agreement, HD Hyundai Construction Equipment will progressively deliver a total of 100 construction units - 70 22-ton excavators and 30 50-ton excavators. These machines will play a crucial role in the construction of a 400km-long underwater pipeline connecting Riyadh with Dammam, situated on the eastern side of Saudi Arabia.

As of this year, Hyundai Construction Equipment has secured a series of substantial contracts in the Saudi Arabian construction equipment market. Particularly noteworthy is the contract signed in August, where the company committed to supplying 50 large excavators and wheel loaders for the NEOM

TOP-TIER MACHINERY

City project. By the end of this year, the company expects to have successfully sold a total of 800 pieces of equipment in Saudi Arabia alone.

The company’s success in securing a series of orders this year can be attributed to the development of products tailored to the specific needs of local customers, thereby establishing differentiable product competitiveness. Additionally, the ability of the company to meet short delivery deadlines, facilitated by its global supply chain, has played a crucial role in its accomplishments.

The company has steadily expanded its services for local customers since entering the Saudi Arabian market in 1991, operating through six branch offices. The strong brand trust cultivated over the years is evident in the premium prices commanded by the company’s used equipment, underscoring the high regard for it in the market.

The sustained high growth rate in the demand for construction equipment in Saudi Arabia is expected to persist in the coming years. A report from the Korea Research Center for Overseas Construction forecasts that Saudi Arabia’s construction market will experience a 5% annual growth rate until 2027. Notably, the construction of NEOM - set to be completed in 2030 - saw the deployment of over 6,000 construction equipment units in 2022 alone. Such substantial investment is a clear indicator that Saudi Arabia will likely continue to make significant orders in the foreseeable future..

UD Trucks recently announced record-breaking sales of its products and service in the Middle East, East and North Africa (MEENA) region in 2023, as the brand also launched its Euro 5 range in Saudi Arabia. The introduction of these new models comes as the brand continues supporting the country’s fast-paced development, with sustainability being a key pillar of Saudi Arabia Vision 2030.

Across the region, UD Trucks has demonstrated strong performance across all segments, reinforcing its position as one of the industry leaders. Engaged in prestigious projects, including those at NEOM and the Red Sea, UD Trucks continues to set new standards for excellence.

“We have witnessed the continued growth and success of UD Trucks in the MEENA region during 2023, reconfirming our unwavering commitment to excellence and sustainability,” says Mourad Hedna, President of UD Trucks Middle East, East and North Africa. “The success of this approach was highlighted as UD Trucks earned various awards both internally and externally.”

Regional growth

In Saudi Arabia, UD Trucks saw a double-digit increase in retail sales compared to 2022. In line with the Kingdom’s

efforts to switch to more environmental-friendly fleets, UD Trucks has now launched its Euro 5 range, offering significant environmental advancements.

The new range will be assembled in Arabian Vehicles & Trucks Industry (AVI) facility in the King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC), a joint venture between Zahid Tractor & Heavy Machinery Co. Ltd and Volvo Truck Corporation.

In East Africa, and despite economic and political challenges, UD Trucks expanded its presence in the region, securing second place in market share in Uganda, while the brand has plans to set up local assembly in Kenya in 2024. Furthermore, in Egypt, UD Trucks appointed a new partner, with plans for an official announcement and launch by the end of the second quarter.

Customer satisfaction

In terms of after-sales performance, UD Trucks surpassed both 2021 and 2022 results, delivering an outstanding double-digit increase in retail sales and wholesale. New initiatives including UD Connected Services and My UD Fleet were introduced, providing data-driven insights for optimal fleet management.

Workshop refurbishments in Dubai further enhanced aftersales capabilities, and the relaunch in Kenya will see dedicated workshops established in Nairobi and Mombasa, providing superior service and support to customers. The brand also provides long-duration service agreements along with tailored service agreements – currently one in every two trucks is covered by a service agreement, which helps reduce total cost of ownership and increase the resale value.

Comprehensive training programs totaling 4,500 hours underscored UD Trucks’ dedication to competence

development, covering technical, soft skills and driver training. The Driver Guard initiative, initially held in Abu Dhabi and Kuwait in 2023, will be launched across all of the brand’s regional markets in 2024. The initiative prioritises driver health and safety, aligning with UD Trucks’ commitment to fostering a supportive and secure environment for drivers, essential for safe and efficient transportation.

Furthermore, UD Trucks implemented several impactful initiatives throughout the year, including the Plastic Pledge initiative aimed at reducing single-use plastics, in collaboration with the Arabian Ocean Rowing Team. The company organised a Customer Experience Day in partnership with Allison Transmission, showcasing the Croner Series’ performance in various segments. Moreover, the Bodybuilder’s Summit held in KSA gathered bodybuilders from across the country, providing on-the-job training.

“We are proud to support local businesses in their transition to greener transportation solutions, reaffirming our ‘Better Life’ commitment to fostering a sustainable environment for future generations,” adds Hedna..

KEEPING UP WITH THE TRENDS

The Middle East and Saudi Arabia are experiencing a boom in the construction business, which has seen significant advancements in the last three years. For over forty years, Saleh Abdulaziz Al Rashed & Sons (SAR) has been in the construction sector, offering the full range of services to the clientele. Plant & Equipment takes a closer look at SAR’s product manufacturing processes.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - COVER STORY 34

The Saudi government’s investments in the construction industry have surged in the last couple of years. Infrastructure projects where the country has spent most on are transportation, healthcare, and tourism all driven by the Vision 2030 initiative. Elsewhere, in the Middle East region, countries like the UAE, Qatar, and Iraq have also continued to invest in major construction projects such as stadiums, hotels, and commercial complexes. To adapt to these changes in demand and progress in the construction market, company operations at SAR have evolved to align with industry trends.

Over the last four decades, SAR has progressed from owning a single quarry on Al Kharj Road in Riyadh to today specializing in producing aggregates (a natural gravel material used in various applications), owning multiple manufacturing facilities, and having clients all over the Middle East region. The company operates in multiple sectors, including crushing and screening solutions, mining, graded aggregate production, asphalt paving, manufacturing, spare parts, and transportation.

SAR ranks among the top crushing and screening solutions provider and suppliers of aggregates for major projects

under the Saudi Vision 2030. It has offered aggregates for projects in the Eastern Region, Ras Al-Khair and Jafurah field port.

Products in demand

The most sought-after items produced by Saleh Abdulaziz Al Rashed & Sons include crushed stone, asphalt, crusher plants, and replacement parts. These are utilized in the building and infrastructure sectors and are crucial for the development of infrastructure across a range of industries, including the construction of buildings and roads.

Crushed stone is used for road base projects, while asphalt is crucial for paving roads and parking lots. Crusher plants play a key role in producing aggregates for construction projects, and spare parts are critical for maintaining the machinery and equipment used in these sectors.

With all the current and upcoming construction projects in Saudi Arabia, the market for aggregates is experiencing significant changes and growth. This presents opportunities for SAR to meet the escalating demand for aggregates and associated products in the construction market.

MIDDLE EAST NEWS - COVER STORY www.PlantAndEquipment.com 35

Manufacturing facility

SAR manufactures a variety of materials handling equipment and components in its Riyadh manufacturing facilities, including movable conveyor belts, conveyor systems, and steel structural products including flatbed trailers, dump trucks, water and diesel tanks, and silos for storage.

“Additionally, we supply crusher spare parts such as crusher liners, jaw plates, and impact bars that are used in the maintenance and repair of crushing equipment,” says Firas Najem, Marketing Manager at SAR. The demand for these spare parts and materials handling equipment is significant in the construction and mining industries. “Our manufacturing facilities are equipped to meet this demand and provide the necessary products to support the construction and mining industries in Saudi Arabia,” he says.

Asphalt mixers

“The asphalt plant operated by our company is primarily used for the construction industry, specifically in road construction and maintenance projects,” continues Najem. Asphalt plants are essential to the production of asphalt mix, which is a vital component of highway construction. The liquid asphalt binder and aggregates—such as sand and crushed stone—combine to form the asphalt mix, which is heated and mixed to produce the hot-mix asphalt used in road projects.

The operation of an asphalt plant involves several key steps:

1. Handling of Aggregates: At the plant, aggregates, such as sand and crushed stone, are kept in silos or special storage bins.

2. Drying and Heating: To eliminate moisture and attain the proper temperature for mixing with the asphalt binder, the aggregates are put into a revolving drum and dried and heated.

3. Asphalt Mixing: To produce an asphalt mix, heated aggregates and liquid asphalt binder are combined in a mixing chamber.

4. Storage and Loading: Until it is ready to be loaded into trucks and driven to a constructing site, hot-mix asphalt is kept in silos or storage tanks at the plant.

Logistics

“Our logistics system for the sales of aggregates and asphalt materials is designed to ensure efficient and timely delivery of products to our customers. We have a well-organized and streamlined process in place to manage the transportation and distribution of aggregates and asphalt materials to various construction sites and projects,” adds Najem.

SAR’s logistics system has several key components that ensure a seamless experience. These include fleet management, route planning, timely delivery, safety measures and communication. SAR maintains a fleet of more than 365 trucks and vehicles equipped to transport aggregates and asphalt materials safely and efficiently. The company’s logistics team plans the most cost-effective and efficient routes for delivery, taking into consideration factors such as traffic conditions, distance to the construction site, and customer requirements. SAR’s team works closely with customers to coordinate delivery schedules and provide updates on the status of their orders at all times. The company trains its drivers in proper handling and transportation procedures to prevent accidents and ensure product integrity. “Overall, our logistics system is designed to optimize the sales and distribution of aggregates and asphalt materials,” adds Najem..

PRECISION LIFTERS

New projects coming on-stream has resulted in strong demand for mobile cranes from top manufacturers, while the latest models and technological advancements are helping improve performance and safety on job sites across the Middle East.

38 MIDDLE EAST NEWS - MOBILE CRANES

With major national projects underway and planned across the Middle East in 2024, including infrastructure developments, urban expansions, and commercial ventures, Yasuaki Kishimoto, CEO & President of Tadano Middle East is anticipating robust demand for construction machinery and equipment.

“[We see] significant growth opportunities for Tadano and Tadano cranes in the Middle East market,” Kishimoto told Plant & Equipment. “As the region continues to prioritize economic diversification and infrastructure enhancements, we foresee sustained momentum in construction activities.”

Kishimoto’s bullish outlook may seem logical in light of Tadano’s 2023 sales performance in the Middle East, which saw net sales of 1,840 units (comprising 790 truck cranes, 680 rough terrain cranes and 460 all terrain cranes), compared

with 910 units in 2022. That meant sales growth above 100%. (Parent company Tadano Ltd is one of the few manufacturers to publish a granular breakdown of sales figures for the Middle East region.)

Key factors driving sales growth were commitment to delivering top-notch quality and prioritizing safety in Tadano products, which has garnered immense trust and loyalty from its customers, says Kishimoto. “The reliability and durability of our cranes have been acknowledged as paramount in meeting the rigorous demands of construction projects in the region.”

The robust service support and efficient parts supply system maintained by Tadano distributors has also helped ensure uninterrupted operations for customers. “[This] further enhances customer confidence in our brand,” he says.

www.PlantAndEquipment.com 39 MIDDLE EAST NEWS - MOBILE CRANES

Across the Tadano mobile crane range, its rough terrain (RT) cranes are a customer favourite, notes Kishimoto. “Renowned for their robust lifting capabilities, [our RT cranes] excel in tackling the demanding terrain conditions often encountered in construction projects across the region,” he says.

Safety features help ensure secure operations even in challenging environments. “The emphasis on high-quality construction translates to minimal downtime for our customers, a critical factor in meeting project deadlines and maintaining operational efficiency,” says Kishimoto.

In the all terrain crane range, Tadano’s new AC 5.250-2 boasts a lifting capacity up to 30% higher than previous best values in this class. “The new AC 5.250-2 is expected to greatly appeal to customers in the Middle East region due to its groundbreaking features tailored to meet the demands of the market,” says Kishimoto. “This model is designed with a primary focus on enhancing lifting capacity while ensuring ease of transportation, a critical aspect in the Middle East where construction projects often span vast areas with varying terrain challenges.” Likely applications include erecting tower cranes, lifting heavy machinery, or facilitating large-scale construction projects.

In-roads into KSA

Another manufacturer that delivered the goods in 2023 was Liebherr. A flurry of news stories on the German manufacturer’s website suggesting it has made strong in-roads into the market in Saudi Arabia.

“Demand for mobile cranes in the KSA market has increased significantly over the last three years and is expected to increase further,” observes Marius Kleck, Area Sales ManagerMiddle East & Central Africa.

Liebherr machines are designed to perform in global markets, he says. “In the Middle East region and also in KSA, there are

certain features that make the machine more attractive and suitable for the market like for example emergency operation of the crane hydraulics to only name one feature.”

Liebherr customers also expect the highest level of quality from its products as well as reliable and competent performance of the after-sales service, notes Kleck.

With the two main customer segments being rental companies and owner-operators, Kleck says that while there is some variation in operating requirements between these groups, ultimately every customer operates in their own way. “The configuration of the cranes is of course variable and can be customised to the customer’s needs. In addition, our customers are generally convinced and satisfied with our after-sales service which ensures minimum downtime. It can be said that all customers expect a high-quality, safe and reliable product from Liebherr.”

Kleck is looking forward to continued growth this year. “The demand for mobile cranes in the Middle East is currently at a very high level across almost all countries and will most likely continue to rise this year and beyond.” Particular bright spots are Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE, says Kleck.

Liebherr’s range of all terrain cranes is a particular strength. “In general, almost all of our all terrain cranes from 3-4 axles

upwards to 9-axles are very popular in the Middle Eastern markets,” notes Kleck.

One standout model is the LTM 1120-4.1. Highlights are a 66 metre telescopic boom combined with a four-axle chassis, which makes the LTM 1120-4.1 a compact crane with the longest boom in its class. “In addition to the longest boom, this crane also impresses with the highest lifting capacities in this class compared to the competition,” points out Kleck.

Safety is obviously the first consideration in any lifting operation, and topflight OEMs are able to offer highly sophisticated systems. In the case of the LTM 1120-4.1, safety features include VarioBase, emergency operation, remote control and monitoring of almost all movements.

Digital control systems are an increasingly important aspect of a crane. While at their most basic they should streamline jobs and help operators plan and carry out a safe lift, in the more advanced use cases they allow cranes to be used more effectively in certain situations.

For example, Liebherr’s VarioBase (variable base crane support) enables safe working in confined spaces when not all outriggers can be fully extended, as the LICCON crane control system monitors the entire 360-degree working area, explains Kleck. Additionally, especially when working directly in the direction of an outrigger, VarioBase offers higher lifting capacities. “For this reason, VarioBase is of global interest and great benefit to all crane users.”

Tadano offers a variety of control systems, including IC-1 Plus, AML-E and AML-F, which Kishimoto describes as “paramount in the mobile crane market for their precision, safety, and efficiency benefits.” Having access to real-time data empowers operators, enhancing productivity while mitigating risks. “Tadano’s integration of these technologies sets our cranes apart, ensuring optimal performance and safety,” says Kishimoto.

A Swing to Rentals?

Headquartered in Dubai, Johnson Arabia has operated as a lifting solutions provider in the UAE market for more than 20 years. Its fleet comprises roughly 250 cranes, in different capacities up to around 700 tonnes, with operations across the GCC, including a branch in Muscat, Oman.

“Our experienced engineering team has the ability to provide the best lifting and engineered solutions to the customers, and most importantly ensure the safety and the quality of these operations. We have a diversified fleet that can meet our customer requirements and fulfil their lifting needs very effectively,” says Mohammad Fareed Naser - Executive Manager and Regional Head of Crane Operations.

Reflecting on the market conditions, Naser says that the market has seen something of an uplift, while the longer term outlook is also positive, with the UAE construction market estimated to reach $50.4 billion by 2029, up from $41 billion in 2024. “We have witnessed an increasing demand on cranes from the last quarter of 2023 which has positively impacted the rental rates as well as liquidity.”

Whereas traditionally contractors prefer to own construction equipment, when it comes to heavy equipment such as cranes,

which require large capex investments and expertise to operate, rental options look more attractive.

Additionally, Naser says that since Covid, renting of lifting equipment has become the preferred option. “I have seen some major companies reducing their plant and equipment [fleets], and depending more on rental for their lifting needs. This helps them reduce their overhead costs and lessens the pressure on their cash flow, allowing them to utilise capex in other areas.”

Apart from the capital costs, the lifting industry also has a very high demand on safety, skills, planning and expertise – another reason why contractors prefer to partner with an experienced rental company like Johnson Arabia, says Nasser.

Commenting on his company’s approach, Nasser says it’s mandatory to perform site inspections before providing any cranes, “to ensure that we give the most safe and best economic solution to our clients.”

Their large fleet size also comes into play. “Our wide range of equipment gives us the edge over our competitors, to serve our customer in the best possible manner.”

Having skilled operators is a key aspect of any lifting operation, but also another reason why electing for a rental company can ensure good results. Nasser says that as part of the company’s continuous improvement plan, not only is Johnson Arabia renewing its crane fleet, it’s also enhancing its teams’ and cranes operators’ capabilities.

“We believe that the crane operators are very essential in the entire service process. They are key drivers in the safety of operation and hence we keep our operators up to date with the latest technology and we periodically provide them with all the required safety and technical trainings that arise,” concludes Naser..

INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY GHANA’S FIRST HITACHI EX2000-7 SETS THE STANDARD IN MINING

In a groundbreaking move for Ghana’s mining sector, SMT, a prominent heavy machinery dealer in Ghana, has delivered the country’s first Hitachi EX2000-7 excavator to client Engineers & Planners.

Currently deployed at the Cardinal Namdini mine in Bolgatanga, the EX2000-7 plays a pivotal role in loading a fleet of rigid trucks and ADTs. Engineers & Planners were satisfied by its performance that it acquired a second EX2000-7 several months later.

The decision to opt for the Hitachi EX2000-7 was rooted in Engineers & Planners’ positive experience with its existing Hitachi machinery fleet, particularly four EX1900-6 excavators.

“The digging power has been good, the excavator loads dump trucks in less than two minutes, and we have less than five loads of a bucket into the truck before it moves to dump, which has greatly improved our productivity,” said Andrew Ofori, Project Manager at Engineers & Planners.

The Hitachi EX2000-7 offers operator comfort, enhanced visibility with a 360-degree camera system, and substantial fuel savings. Ofori continues: “When you enter the cab, it is spacious and the air conditioning provides a comfortable working environment.”

The strong partnership between Engineers & Planners and SMT Ghana has been key to facilitating operations and prompt resolution of any issues. SMT's after-sales support, including dedicated on-site technicians and ongoing technical support has further solidified the trust and collaboration between them.

THE RACE TO EFFICIENCY

With forklifts a key link in the logistics chain for African economies, most manufacturers are picking steady growth in the sector, with electrification, increasing use of pallets and other efficiencies helping the warehouse sector grow.

AFRICA NEWS - FORKLIFTS 52

From her base in South Africa, Vuyokazi Bangazi, National Sales Manager at CFAO Equipment South Africa, distributor for Toyota Material Handling, has a clear view of the nuances of the market, and what that will likely mean for forklift sales. Key factors include inflation, volatile exchange rates, and loadshedding. Global geopolitical tensions are also disrupting international supply chains.

Despite the challenges, bright spots include a higher economic growth forecast for 2024, while innovative solutions from startups and growth-stage businesses are driving positive change and contributing to Africa’s resilience and growth, says Bangazi.

Loadshedding has forced many businesses to invest in alternative energy sources, which in turn can make utilizing electric equipment more attractive, not to mention aligning with carbon neutral strategic objectives, says Bangazi.

Electrification of the African forklift fleet has been widely noted, even if today the majority of the fleet remains diesel.

Christophe Burel, Managing Director of Manitou Group for North & Central Africa, estimates that one out of every three machines sold is electric. “The trend toward electrification makes us also forecast that soon, this ratio will turn into one out of two [machines sold] in the next three to five years.”

Bangazi estimates that in South Africa the split has been averaging 51% (electric) and 49% (internal combustion). The South African market has also embraced the global trend of shifting from lead acid to lithium batteries over the past three years, she notes.

Robert O’Donoghue, Vice President Marketing Solutions, for Hyster Europe, says that electric motive power is increasingly popular among high-intensity operations. He points out that while electrification can present advantages for many facilities, every operation is different and challenges can arise.

For example, operations located in areas with weak electrical grids are more prone to experience brownouts, which could

AFRICA NEWS - FORKLIFTS www.PlantAndEquipment.com 53

temporarily bring work to a grinding halt, particularly when charging lithium-ion powered equipment.

“Likewise, going electric may require your facility to dedicate extra space for battery storage or to upgrade its electrical and other infrastructure in order to support the necessary chargers or dispensers.”

Getting Ownership Costs Right

First and foremost, businesses want “durable lift truck solutions that are also uncomplicated,” says O’Donoghue. “Affordability is key, and it is important that businesses can select the right truck for both their needs, and their budget.”

And it’s essential to consider Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), not just the purchase or lease prices, he says.

In the case of Manitou Group, which Burel describes as “the leading brand for rough terrain forklifts in Africa for decades,” brand awareness and quality built machines ensure longer usage and higher resale value. “This drives heavily down the TCO for Manitou machines,” he says.

Support and service from the local dealers network, including spare parts availability and the quality of technical documentation, is a key determinant of long term usage and uptime, says Burel.

Bangazi says that businesses need to consider potential disruption costs when making decisions. “[CFAO] has always prided itself in offering total solution to the customers; including our premium products and services.”

Rising fuel prices are another ownership cost for operations to factor in, says O’Donoghue, when running diesel units. “Choosing a fleet of lift trucks that offers optimal fuel efficiency is increasingly important,” he says. “The Hyster H2.0-3.5A forklifts offer industry leading fuel economy. Compared to leading competitors, the H2.0-3.5A models have lower VDI fuel consumption and may achieve up to 27% more fuel efficiency, which helps to keep costs down.”

54
AFRICA NEWS - FORKLIFTS

The Race to Efficiency

The nature of logistics operations also impacts demand for equipment. At Manitou Group, Burel says they’re witnessing growth in the overall warehouse market. One reason is the increased use of pallets, and growing flows in the logistics centres drive this market up. “Comparing African emerging markets to more mature European, required lifting capacities are generally higher,” he says.

With businesses often looking to optimise budgets within the warehouse equipment fleet, that can include investing in agile and versatile equipment in order to optimise storage space, improve material flow, and increase throughput, says Hester’s O’Donoghue.

“Operations can enhance their warehousing capacity and meet the growing demand for their products and services. This can also lead to higher efficiency, productivity, and profitability in the long run,” he notes.

Some warehousing applications are also storing items outdoors to maximise use of their space, says O’Donoghue. “These businesses need flexible trucks that can be used both inside and outside to optimise their fleets, and costs.”

Bangazi highlights the benefits of Toyota Material Handling’s operator-assist system (SEnS+). Designed for forklifts to

enhance warehouse safety, it features pedestrian and object detection, and Truck Control, which limits truck movement to ensure safe operation if an obstacle is detected. It also has a wide detection range, able to detect obstacles up to 10 metres away, with a horizontal detection angle of 130°. It also has an auto steering guidance system (as standard) to assist the operators – especially important when driving in narrow warehouse aisles. “Our customers have been interested in this additional feature on our products as it was aligned with their health and safety strategic objectives,” says Bangazi.

Bobcat Range Hits Africa

In January 2024, the first Bobcat-branded material handling units began rolling off production lines at plants in South Korea, China and Germany. It represented the culmination of a two-year global initiative, with the full range of forklifts and warehouse equipment formerly produced by Doosan Industrial Vehicle (DIV) rebranded to Bobcat, and now available for the African markets, says Nicolas Dumont, District Sales Manager - Africa for Bobcat.

Aside from the rebrand, there’s also new machines on offer. Dumont says that they’ve witnessed the shift from IC to electric, with the portion of class 1 trucks (electric counter balance) having significantly increased over the past three years. ‘We believe that this trend is going to continue in the future.”

Consequently, Bobcat is bringing new electric trucks from 6 to 10 tonnes, to meet what Dumont says is growing demand for bigger electric trucks. “We showed the B80NS 8 tonne product at Logimat in Stuttgart in March 2024 and dealers and visitors from Africa immediately showed a lot of interest.”

“These new products from 6-10 tonne provide industrial users with a wide choice of zero-emission, low-noise level, environmentally friendly trucks capable of tackling heavy duty tasks,” says Dumont. “For example, the B80NS and B100NS heavy-lifting electric trucks with capacities of 8.0 and 10.0 tonne, respectively, offer improved capability, power and performance for businesses across a broad spectrum of industry – from manufacturing, engineering and foundries, to building supplies, transport and warehousing.” .

FIRST DEVELON DA45-7 ARTICULATED DUMP TRUCK SOLD IN ITALY

The first DA45-7 articulated dump truck (ADT) from Develon, formerly Doosan Construction Equipment, has been sold in Italy and is at work in the chalk basin of Roccastrada. The machine was purchased as it was seen as the best suited for the movement of rock in the region’s so-called ‘Chalk Valley’ quarries.

The DA45-7 ADT is working in the province of Grosseto, in the heartland of the Tuscan Maremma, home to one of Italy’s largest chalk deposits, renowned for the purity and the whiteness of its stone. The new machine is owned by Fibran

Group, a Greek multinational, with production sites in seven European countries and commercial activities in over 60 countries around the world, which purchased its first chalk quarry and processing plant in the area back in 2009.

The optimisation of quarry machinery plays an important role in the management of extractive operations. The movement of earth and chalk rock is a crucial part of the process and recently required the addition of a new dump truck to the Fibran fleet.

At the ‘Chalk Valley’ quarry, the DA45-7 transports both chalk rock and waste soil from surface excavations over an average in-out distance of four kilometres. This type of work demands a fast-moving, highly manoeuvrable vehicle and the DA45-7 has proved to be just the job.

Like all Develon ADTs, the permanent, six-wheel-drive DA45-7 model stands out for the front-mounted turning ring, which ensures equal load distribution even under tight steering. Working in conjunction with free-swinging rear tandem bogie, the machine’s configuration ensures even weight distribution on the tyres and guarantees permanent contact and traction at all six wheels..
