The project will change the face of one of the least developed districts in Zimbabwe - Mbire. Once completed, it will also enhance trade between Zimbabwe and its two neighbours Zambia and Mozambique - as well as countries in the Central African region. The logistic hub will also provide a shorter alternative route to Chirundu Border Post as it has the capacity to handle more traffic. When it commences, the project will have two phases, with US$10 million being injected in the first phase. The first phase, with a time frame of 18 months, will see the installation of a ferry, as well as the improvement of the landing bay which is being constructed by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development. A solar plant will be erected to power the border area, while a fuel depot will be constructed to ensure constant supplies of fuel to the ferry. The ferry, which is called RORO (Roll On, Roll Off), will be the first of its kind in Africa as it has the capacity to ferry both bulk goods and people simultaneously across the Zambezi River. It can carry up to 30Ă—30-tonne trucks at once. The second phase, which has a budget of $150 million, will see the installation of additional ferries, expansion of the fuel depot, designation of special economic zones, construction of a polytechnic and provision of information technology facilities. The development is a joint venture between the Kano State government and Brains and Hammers Company, under Public Private Partnership (PPP). The Economic City of Kano has been designed to have 10,000 shops in phase one, 38 world class warehouses, 280 Trailer Parks spaces, Inland Container Land (ICL) with 200 Trucks capacity spaces and 202 Trucks Parking Spaces. That is in addition to creating thousands of direct and indirect jobs, while and after executing the project, which is scheduled to come into force by June 2022. The construction of the first wind farm operating in the BOO (build, own, operate) system will start in October as a partnership between the private sector and the National Renewable Energy Authority (NERA). The investor is Lekela Power, a renewable power generation company that delivers utility-scale projects across Africa.

Construction of the park, located in Adama city, 99 km southeast of Addis Ababa, could start before the end of 2019. Chinese government concessional loans will fund 85 percent needed to build the industrial park while the rest will come from the Ethiopian government. The planned industrial park will focus on attracting firms engaged in equipment manufacturing. Work is being done to conclude land acquisition and financing-related procedures. The work is being carried out by the French company Suez International and the Egyptian company Arab Contractors Company and Engineer (ArabCo). The latter will enhance the capacity of the wastewater treatment plant by building four new tanks 36 m in diameter and 23 m high. They will allow the collection of sludge from wastewater treatment. Suez and ArabCo will also build a boiler building, a gas tank and a gas treatment unit. According to ArabCo, the work should be completed in two phases. Initially, the focus will be on improving the performance and increasing the efficiency of the plant, as well as treating the sludge produced by the plant with biogas, while the second phase will aim to reduce the environmental impact of wastewater treatment products. Completion of this work is expected by 2020. At that time, the Eastern Purification Treatment Plant should be able to treat 800,000 m3 of water per day. Waste from wastewater treatment will be used to produce biogas for electricity generation.

Uganda will invest $40 million in the first phase of a $263-million vehicle-assembly plant with the view of starting production by mid-2021 to tap rising demand in the East African community region. The plant is expected to produce 5,000 cars a year in Phase one and this capacity will be extended to 150,000 cars (buses, trucks, pick-ups and sports utility vehicles) when the project is fully completed. The market is mainly supplied with used cars displaying that there is a need for new cars in the region. The combined market for passenger and commercial vehicles in the EAC States (Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Burundi) could double in the next 13 years to almost 630,000 a year.

According to Liberia’s Minister of Public Works, phase one of the project will begin in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County to Grand Kru County. The Deputy Finance Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment towards road development and reiterated that its first priority is infrastructural development and the key is road construction. The southeastern road corridor, which stretches from Buchanan, Grand Bassa County to Grand Kru County, is being considered as a signature road project. The project will provide apprenticeships to vulnerable youth in urban areas and support transformation of roads and value chain addition using productive public works and community-driven development approaches particularly for youth in rural areas. The project will also improve efficiency in the delivery of cash transfers to target households, including youth.

AP 240 Makes Fast Work of Thick Layer
A
n Ammann AP 240 Pneumatic Tyred Roller helped a Kenyan company compact a thick asphalt layer while also meeting targets for density and timeliness at Kisumu International Airport in Kisumu, Kenya. “The AP 240 can be used to compact asphalt layers up to 150 mm layer thick when ballasted to the proper weight,” said Nayim Shah, director of Pride Enterprises. “With that weight, we can achieve the required strength.” Adding the ballast was effortless, Shah said. “We ballasted it ourselves,” he said. “It was a very simple process.” The 150-mm surface lift at the airport was tested, and results confirmed the AP 240 achieved its compaction density targets. Density wasn’t the only goal. As with all airport projects, time was at a premium, and the compaction work needed to be done during the facility’s least busy times. “We were working overnight, and with the new AP 240, we were not worried about any breakdowns,” Shah said. 18 PlantAndEquipment.com | September 2019
He noted that operators found the machine easy to control. “It is very user friendly – a simple machine to operate,” Shah said. Operators also appreciated the consistency of the braking system and the quiet, spacious cab. Shah likes the low cost of ownership and the ease of maintenance. “The machine currently has 332 hours and we have only done one servicing,” Shah said. “There have been no other expenses associated with it.” Pride Enterprises, founded in 1984, is a wellestablished Kenyan business. Hitachi ZW310-6 Wheel Loader Proves Productive at Portuguese Quarry
A
Portuguese limestone supplier has added a Hitachi ZW310-6 wheel loader to its fleet to help it maintain the highest levels of productivity at its quarry near the town of Fátima. Filstone Natural SA (Filstone) (video) was established in 2002 by CEO Ricardo Jorge and produces 900,000 tonnes of material per year at the 30-hectare site. The Hitachi wheel loader is working on the second level of the quarry to load trucks, move limestone between different stockpiles, and feed the crushing and screening equipment. The material being handled by the ZW310-6 is a secondary commodity created by activities on the quarry floor, in which 13-14 tonne limestone blocks are cut. At the current time, reserves are anticipated to last for the next 100 years. Stable and compact “I first learned about Hitachi on a visit to Japan in 1997 and I know that the company is associated with quality,” confirms Ricardo. “Many of my friends in the industry own Hitachi machines and I have always heard positive statements about the servicing and maintenance. In time, we began discussions with Moviter [Hitachi’s authorised local dealer] to gauge what they could offer and agreed to invest in the ZW310-6.” 22 PlantAndEquipment.com | September 2019
For Ricardo, the Hitachi wheel loader is essential to Filstone’s output, especially in a market in which limestone can sometimes be more lucrative than marble. “Japanese companies such as Hitachi are forwardthinking and the ZW310-6 has undoubted quality. We had high expectations for the wheel loader, but were surprised by its low fuel consumption. In addition, the machine is stable and compact, and still performs as effectively as a larger machine.” A pleasure to operate At the family-owned company, Ricardo’s cousin, Humberto Miguel de Jesus Santos, is operating the ZW310-6. He agrees with Ricardo about the merits of the Hitachi machine: “This wheel loader is like a Porsche! Rapid, agile and smooth. Inside the cab there is near 100% visibility and it is very quiet. In terms of maintenance, it has well-positioned access points and is easy to clean. I really enjoy using Hitachi machines.”

Manitowoc’s Niella Tanaro Plant Adds New Grove GRT655/655L Rough-Terrain Cranes to Production Line-up • The first Grove GRT655 and GRT655L rough terrain cranes have been produced at Manitowoc’s Niella Tanaro production facility in Italy. • The plant began manufacturing Grove GRT880 and GRT8100 rough-terrain cranes in 2018.

he first Grove GRT655L and GRT655 rough terrain cranes have been assembled at Manitowoc’s Niella Tanaro plant. The news comes almost exactly one year after it was announced that GRT880 and GRT8100 rough terrain cranes would begin production from the Italian factory – the first to be produced outside of Shady Grove, Pennsylvania, USA. What’s more, given the success of the production of GRT8100 and GRT880 models from Niella Tanaro, Manitowoc has decided to expand the product portfolio of its European production. Since 2005, the Niella Tanaro factory has manufactured and shipped more than a thousand rough terrain and small all terrain cranes around the globe, including the RT530E-2, RT540E, RT550E and, most recently, the GRT880 and GRT8100 models. “This is a logical decision based on the success that we achieved over the last year with the production of the GRT880 and GRT8100,” Giorgio Angelino, senior vice president for mobile cranes in Europe and Africa, explained. “We received a very good response from our customers in Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia Pacific in regards to models that were localized in Niella Tanaro. We are also getting enthusiastic feedback from the field, so we are confident that the customers will benefit greatly from this latest decision also.” The benchmark in their class The GRT655 and GRT655L have nominal ratings of 51 t/60 t and their only difference is

the telescopic full-power boom, being a foursection 34.8m on the GRT655 and five-section 43 m on the GRT655L. Volvo Construction Equipment continues to maximise site efficiency for its customers with the launch of Productivity Report, a new fleet analysis service designed to monitor production and make it easy to lower cost per ton.

By collecting detailed data and presenting it in an easy-to-understand format, customers spend less time sifting through complex machine information and more time focused on their operations. Utilising the insights and machine data gives customers the possibility to better understand how their machines are being used in order to make informed decisions that improve overall profitability.
Telematics data can be a powerful way to improve the efficiency and uptime of fleets, but ‘data overload’ can stand in the way of getting to the information that really matters. Joining the Fuel Efficiency Report, launched in 2016, Volvo ACTIVE CARE Report and Summary Report, launched in 2018, the latest report reinforces the company’s commitment to helping customers more efficiently manage their operating costs. With the addition of a new Productivity Report, Volvo CE has grouped all four tools into an umbrella package – called Insight Reports. With a range of analyses to choose from, customers can adapt each report to suit individual business structures for increased profitability.
The newly introduced Productivity Report highlights how many tons of material has been handled or moved, helping customers to gain control over operating costs, and be better informed when tendering for contracts. Available on Volvo articulated haulers and wheel loaders equipped with On-Board Weighing, the report makes it easy to measure production and take the necessary steps to lower cost per ton. By combining both productivity and fuel consumption data, the report makes it easy to measure efficiency, thanks to data such as total tons handled per liter, fuel cost per ton or payload utilisation.

W 150 CF Scores in Mexico with Higher Productivity and Area Output A Wirtgen W 150 CF compact milling machine, equipped with new 1,800-mm milling drum assembly, mills the entire road pavement along the main city corridor in Torreón, Coahuila, Mexico, for the implementation of a brand new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
Milling prepares the ground for more mobility The project in one of Mexico’s most important economic and industrial centres includes a new, exclusive hydraulic concrete BRT lane plus the rehabilitation of two adjacent asphalt lanes. The project will result in better, faster mobility with improved transportation security for city residents. However, before being able to build the new lanes, milling contractor TATSA (Triturados Asfalticos de Torreón S.A de C.V.) faced the challenge of removing the complete pavement at a maximum milling depth of 25 cm to 30 cm. With the W 150 CF it was possible to fulfil this task in one single pass but depending on the stretch requirement, TATSA was also performing milling of the layers in two or 30 PlantAndEquipment.com | September 2019
three passes. “These roads are old and have been paved over many times during several years without any milling work. In some parts the pavement is even above the sidewalk,” explained Eng. Gisela Gutiérrez, production coordinator at TATSA. W 150 CF meets project requirements The entire project covers a length of 24.3 km and includes the integration of 9.3 km central confined lanes in Torreón and 15 km of highway between Torreón and Matamoros. The tender stipulated a single milling machine that could work at several locations in the city within the same day. Due to this requirement and the large-scale project in confined spaces the contractor chose Wirtgen’s 150 CF with a 1,800 mm milling drum assembly. With the extended drum, the most powerful cold milling

Furthermore, W 150 CF’s optimized machine transport weight – despite its tremendous engine power – spoke for itself. To maximize the cost-effectiveness of milling operations, cold milling machines need to be transported quickly from one site to the next. “Before participating in this tender we talked to the application experts from the Wirtgen Group dealer Construmac. And soon we were sure the W 150 CF would be the best solution for this job. And so was the ordering authority. After its arrival the machine immediately convinced us. In the meantime we ordered a new unit for further projects in Mexico,” says Eng. Ruben Tinoco, owner of TATSA. Cost-efficient rehabilitation Today, urban jobsites are required to be much more dynamic and fast, causing minimal impact to the traffic, routines of residents, workers and people passing the area. So in Torreón minimizing the traffic interruptions were an essential goal. According to Tinoco, the plan is similar to what he could experience on jobsites in Europe. “I was in Finland for holidays. At 6 p.m. a paving train with Wirtgen Group machines arrived in front of my hotel in Helsinki. The next morning when I got up, all the equipment was gone and the road was perfectly paved. We want our jobs in Mexico to be done just as fast and efficient, with minimal impact on regular transit and in high quality.”
Cutting-edge levelling system LEVEL PRO PLUS To achieve optimum milling results, the W 150 CF offers state-of the art features. These include one of Wirtgen‘s core technologies – levelling. When the surface course is removed, the LEVEL PRO levelling system continually compares the actual milling depth with the present target milling depth. LEVEL PRO can work with different sensors – cable, hydraulic cylinder, ultrasonic and slope sensors or laser and sonic ski sensors as well as multiplex systems – and can be extended as required. 3D levelling is also possible with installed interfaces that are compatible with 3D systems from common manufacturers. In Torreón, TATSA used the multiplex system. In this system, three sensors on each side of the machine scan the height. The automatic levelling system factors all three measurements into its analysis so that the pre-set target milling depth is met exactly, while ensuring that any unevenness in the road surface is not copied. “The work with Wirtgen’s levelling system the Level Pro Plus and Multiplex systems is intuitive and comfortable, the milling results showed an evenly milled surface, true to line and level. This is a crucial factor when it comes to paving the new surface courses and avoiding costly correction measures in the form of asphalt levelling courses” says Eng. Liborio Frias Estrada, milling jobsite coordinator for the BRT project in Torreón. And Ruben Tinoco adds: “Cold milling has a key impact on the quality of road rehabilitation. That’s the reason why we rely on Wirtgen cold milling machines.”

The Mercedes-Benz Unimog An off-road institution While the G-Class also cuts a striking figure as a lifestyle vehicle, the Mercedes-Benz Unimog is a real workhorse. It does duty as a forest fire-fighting vehicle in France, climbs Mount Etna in Sicily as a tourist shuttle and supports the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service as a sea rescue vehicle. In concert with more than 650 Unimog service outlets in over 130 countries, its off-road capabilities and reliability make it a loyal companion around the world. Readers of “Off Road” magazine voted it off-roader of the year in the category “SpecialPurpose Vehicles” for what was already the 15th time in a row. Hard times, unusual solutions – the zero hour of the Unimog Daimler-Benz engineer Albert Friedrich designed the Unimog in 1946 together with Erhard & Söhne Company from Schwäbisch Gmünd, which originally supplied ashtrays for the Mercedes-Benz saloon cars. The new vehicle was conceived as a “motorized multipurpose machine” for agriculture. Compared with the farm tractor technology at the time, it had numerous innovations on board. With a top speed of 50 km/h, it was twice as fast as a common agricultural vehicle. In addition, it was fitted with:

That is also when the vehicle got its name: Unimog, an abbreviation for the German Universal-Motorgerät or Universal Motor Machine. The home of the Unimog: Gaggenau in Baden The demand for the universal genius soon outstripped the production capacities in Göppingen. Starting in June 1951, the DaimlerBenz truck plant in Gaggenau, Baden, became
the new home of the Unimog. A fitting place: the first off-roader made in Gaggenau dated way back to 1907. The first Unimog, the U 25, got along with just 25 hp: Under the bonnet of the vehicle that measures 3.57 metres in length was a four-cylinder engine with a displacement of 1.7 litres. 5846 units of the U 25 were built. The Unimog S marked the first major evolution in 1955. It is still the best-seller among the Unimog models until today. It was powered by a 2.2-litre petrol engine with six cylinders and 80 hp. This engine was also installed in the 220 S luxury saloon at the time. However, its petrol consumption was luxurious as well, which is why the subsequent model series 416 from the year 1965 was produced exclusively with diesel engines. The Unimog models became a sales hit during the years of the economic miracle. In its 24 years of production, 45,336 units of the U 416 were sold – the Unimog model series with the second-highest sales after the Unimog S. It was used for an accordingly diverse range of applications: as an aid convoy vehicle, on the rails in road-rail specification or even as a patient transport ambulance. In addition, there were variants as a tractor unit or conversions to three-axle vehicles and tracked vehicles. The 250,000th Unimog came off the assembly line already in 1984. By 2002, Gaggenau produced 320,748 units, with that number standing at over 350,000 units today. An exceptional number for a highly specialized

vehicle such as the Unimog. Since 2002, the Unimog production is located at the world’s largest truck assembly plant in Wörth. Since 2006, a dedicated museum in Gaggenau has been exhibiting the fascination that is the Unimog, which can also be experienced there on an in-house test track with a gradient of 100 percent. Nothing outperforms them in terrain: U 4023 and U 5023 In addition to the Unimog implement carrier, which is a familiar sight as an orange municipal vehicle, there are two variants of the Unimog with extreme off-road capabilities: the U 4023 with a gross vehicle weight rating of 10.3 t and the U 5023 with a gross vehicle weight rating of 14.3 t. In each case, the last two digits stand for the output of 231 hp (170 kW), which is produced by a 5.1-litre four-cylinder engine. Low in comparison to the G-Class at first glance. However, for commercial vehicles it is torque that is crucial. And that is where the Unimog delivers an impressive 900 Nm, which are on tap constantly across the entire main operating range of 1200 to 1600 rpm. This power pack, the selectable all-wheel drive, the on-demand inter-axle and inter-wheel locks as well as eight forward and six reverse speeds with off-road reduction gear make the Unimog the “ master off the road”. It conquers gradients of up to 45 degrees or 100 percent. It can tilt by up to 38 degrees, which corresponds to a maximum tilt angle of 76 percent and it has a fording depth of up to 1.20 metres. 36 PlantAndEquipment.com | September 2019
Such extreme operations are made possible by, amongst other things, the standard-fit portal axles, which result in an impressive ground clearance of 41 cm. Coil springs with their large spring travel allow an axle articulation of up to 30 degrees. That is why a Unimog can have the left front wheel on top of a rock and the right front wheel in a depression – and still maintain ground contact with all four wheels. Liebherr Delivers One Hundredth LTM 1450-8.1 Mobile Crane to French Crane Hire Contractor Bezombes
J
ust 21 months after the start of series deliveries, Liebherr handed over the one hundredth LTM 1450-8.1 in July. It went to Niort in western France, not far from the Atlantic coast, to crane contractor Bezombes, which has upgraded its fleet with the 450-tonne machine. Liebherr unveiled the LTM 1450-8.1 with a completely new concept for 8-axle mobile cranes at the Bauma in 2016, with great economy and simple set-up on site being the main priorities. This means that the new 8-axle crane is capable of travelling on public roads with a 12-tonne axle load including its complete 85-metre telescopic boom and all supports. This enables it to be prepared for use quickly once it reaches the site. “We had to replace our LTM 1250-6.1 after 13 years of good, reliable service because our customers are now demanding greater lifting capacity, more hoisting height and larger radii. That is why we invested in a crane in a higher performance class,” explains Benoît Bezombes, Managing Director of Bezombes Niort. “The LTM 1450-8.1 is a member of the latest generation of cranes. It is safe, easy to use, quickly ready to start work and also energy-efficient as it is a single-engine crane.”

The 85 metre telescopic boom was an important factor in the purchasing decision for Bezombes. “It enables us to erect tower cranes in record time. What is more, with its luffing fly jib, the crane delivers extraordinary lifting capacity values. VarioBase® and VarioBallast® makes us extremely flexible on constricted sites,” adds Bezombes. The company boss tested the crane personally at the Liebherr acceptance site and was delighted with the sensitivity and precision of the crane movements on the LTM 1450-8.1. He says, “The LTM 1250-6.1 was a very good crane, but the new 450-tonne crane is an enormous improvement on it.” The LTM 1450-8.1 is now the largest crane in the company’s fleet and will be used for jobs in industry, construction and civil engineering, wind energy and for hoisting boats in and out of the water in Atlantic ports near the company’s headquarters. Bezombes is a crane and heavy haulage contractor with a workforce of 14 and 8 mobile cranes. Almost all of them were supplied by Liebherr. “When I bought my first 250-tonne crane at the age of just 25, Liebherr trusted and supported me. We have a very close partnership with Liebherr. We have been working with the same people for over 15 years,” says Bezombes.

These include optimized hydraulics and improved hydraulic service intervals. The hydraulic fluid change intervals have now been extended from 2000 to 4000 hours thereby providing a 50%+ cost saving, as well as delivering environmental benefits.

KCM Reaches Production of 10,000 Hydraulic Excavators In India

obelco Construction Equipment India Pvt. Ltd. (or KCEI) held a ceremony in Andhra Pradesh, India, to celebrate its production of 10,000 hydraulic excavators at our factory in Sri City. KCEI’s executives and about 300 employees attended the ceremony. In anticipation of growth in demand in India, Kobelco Construction Machinery commenced operation of the local factory in Sri City Industrial Park in Andhra Pradesh from January 2011. The initial production capacity was two units per day, and now it has expanded to 10 units per day. While we are currently working on improving the capacity to 12 units per day, the accumulated number of excavators manufactured at the factory in India has reached 10,000 on August 2. At the ceremony, KCEI president Nakagawa said, “We are very proud that we succeeded in manufacturing 10,000 hydraulic excavators in less than 10 years in India. Our goal for the next 10 years is to be a top-class factory

among all Kobelco factories in terms of safety, quality, and productivity.” The demand for hydraulic excavators in India has continued to increase with economic growth and infrastructure progress. Cat® Propel Drive System Upgrade for 7495 and 7495 HF Shovels Eases Maintenance, Reduces Downtime and Cuts Costs
C
aterpillar has developed a propel drive system upgrade for Cat® 7495 and 7495 HF Electric Rope Shovels. The upgrade reconfigures the crawler undercarriage to allow drive shaft and tumbler replacement from the outboard side, which improves access and decreases downtime by days. Improved component design extends durability and increases component life to reduce costs even further. The new design slashes maintenance time and enhances safety by enabling access to drive components without removing the propel transmission. Additionally, Caterpillar engineered the upgrade to be a direct
replacement. No machining of the crawler frame is required for installation. The new design also is robust. Thrust loads are evenly distributed on large tapered roller bearings as opposed to bronze thrust plates, and the bearings are sealed and continuously purged with fresh grease to keep them free of contaminants. The result is increased durability in harsh environments and alignment with 25,000-hour planned rebuilds.
