The company intends to build five glass factories, starting with two, to serve various sectors, including the solar power industry. The plan is to power those facilities with the electricity generated by the proposed PV park, while the surplus will be fed into the national electricity transmission network. The dam will be built on the Shire River in Blantyre District, downstream of the Nkhula A HPP & Nkhula B hydroelectric dam (100 MW), the Tedzani hydroelectric dam (110.7 MW) and upstream of the Kapichira hydroelectric dam (128 MW). The water reservoir will have a large reservoir. Electricity Generation Company Malawi (Egenco), the parastatal company that transports and distributes electricity, is considering taking part of the water from the reservoir to boost the capacity of the Kapichira hydroelectric plant. The new port will be developed at Kisian, 16km from the city centre, with cement, coal and petroleum products destined for the region being used as justification for its construction. Two years ago, the government signed an agreement with China Exim Bank to finance its construction. Transport and Infrastructure Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said the Kisian site was chosen for its potential for expansion, complete with a logistics and an industrial park. The port will be linked by rail, with other auxiliary connections access roads, electricity connections and satellite buildings. Once complete, it will be leased out to sub-operators under an agreement with KPA. The new port will have two multipurpose berths of 3,000 tonnes and one work boat berth.

The project will be led by Malindi Solar Group, a company created ad hoc by Globeleq. The latter, 70% owned by Commonwealth Development Corporation and 30% by Nordfund, will build a 52MW solar park in Malindi, a coastal town in southeastern Kenya. British Prime Minister of Foreign Affairs announced a series of investments and said that the British government’s development finance agency will contribute US $50m while its partner, Globeleq, an independent power producer (IPP) the remaining US $16m. The funds will be a loan refundable over 16 years. The energy produced will be consumed by locals as the region is still facing load shedding. The sale of electricity from the solar park will be made by the Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC), which provides public electricity service in Kenya. The lighting company has signed a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Globeleq.

Corobrik would commission Africa’s largest and most environmentally friendly brick factory by September 2020. The solar factory is sited in Ashaiman in the Greater Accra region. Appiah and his company have been given a 3.4-acre land in Ashaiman by the Municipal Assembly for the construction of the factory. The solar factory aims at manufacturing solar panels for industrial and domestic uses. supported by JVG Thoma and Palmer Group Company, based in Germany and the United States, respectively. The factory is going to be a sub-company under his Appiah-Karim company. The Kwesi Appiah solar project is enjoying some sponsorship from the German government. The solar equipment manufacturing factory is said to provide over 500 direct jobs for the youth in the Ashaiman area. The solar factory will have a training facility on the side, which will be set up by Appiah’s partners Palmer Group and JVG Thoma. This centre is going to train the youth in solar panel fabrication. As part of the initiative, a marketing and service centre will be set up to provide a 24-hour service.

African Construction Expo 2019 Readies for a Breakthrough

ince the highs last experienced just before the 2010 Soccer World Cup, the construction sector in South Africa and on the African continent has yet to see an industry boom. South Africa experienced a technical recession in the first and second quarters of this year. Coupled with 2018’s economic instability, woeful performances by stateowned enterprises and its negative effect on civil construction, as well as institutional uncertainly and policy paralysis that are typical of an election year, it certainly presents a less than favourable outlook for the South African construction industry. However, there is cause for optimism with the South African government’s economic stimulus plan to inject billions into infrastructure development. Add Statistics SA Q2 figures, which suggest a 2.3% uptick in construction activity and the construction tide may rise sooner rather than later. 14 PlantAndEquipment.com | June 2019
Research giant Fitch Solutions also expects 2019 to be the year the sector finally emerges from recession. The 2019 sub-Saharan Africa construction growth report expects year-onyear growth of 6.8%, considering the total infrastructure spend is expected to total R855 billion over the next 3 years, an increase of 2.5% from last year. Fitch says Ethiopia, the continent’s top construction performer, is expected to increase its construction industry value to 12.3%. But industry growth in Zambia and Namibia is slowing down as Zambia faces fiscal challenges and rising debt while Namibia is seeing major projects coming to an end. Against this background, construction professionals across Africa can mark their calendar for the year’s biggest industry event the 7th Annual African Construction and Totally Concrete Expo taking place at Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg from 11 to 13 June 2019.

Middle East and African automotive aftermarket valued at US$61 billion in 2018, with more growth anticipated – industry report Whitepaper ahead of Automechanika Dubai 2019 exhibition points to upward trend in emerging markets The Middle East and Africa’s auto aftermarket was worth a combined US$61 billion in 2018, while a projected rise in car sales, and more manufacturing bases will steer the wider region toward six percent annual growth over the next six years, a newly published report said. Saudi’s decision to allow women to drive in 2018 and increasing online spare parts sales coupled with growing demand for vehicle modifications are other factors that will accelerate growth in the Middle East’s aftermarket, which was valued at US$28.14 billion in 2018, according to a May 2019 whitepaper by global analysts TechSci Research. This is estimated to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 5.8 percent over the next six years, valuing US$39.6 billion in 2024, while in Africa, demand for aftermarket spare parts and services, valued at US$33.17 billion in 2018, is tipped to increase at a CAGR of 6.25 percent over the same period, valuing US$47.73 billion. TechSci’s Middle East and Africa Automotive Aftermarket report was prepared exclusively ahead of Automechanika Dubai 2019, the wider region’s largest international trade fair for the auto services industry, which takes 16 PlantAndEquipment.com | June 2019
place next month from 10-12 June at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre. The report details engine parts such as electric components, radiators, and exhausts comprising a 51 percent share of the Middle East’s aftermarket in 2018, followed by tyres (26 percent) and lubricants (11 percent). Axles and transmission components comprise four percent of the market, while air and oil filters, suspension systems, batteries, and brakes each make up two percent of the market. Those shares will remain much the same by 2024, though at a far higher value, fuelled by in new vehicle sales across the region. According to TechSci, 2.3 million Passenger Vehicles (PVs), and 430,000 Commercial Vehicles (CVs) were sold in the Middle East in 2018, with this figure estimated to reach 3.68 million (3.07 million PCs, 610,000 CVs) in 2024. Total vehicle parc (CVs and PVs on the roads) in the Middle East currently stands at 41.6 million, already presenting huge demand for aftermarket spare parts and services, all of which will be on show by more than 1,800 exhibitors from 60-plus countries at the 17th edition of Automechanika Dubai next month. “In the coming years, demand for both

With the biggest names in the business present this year, the exhibition is a great place for buyers, industry professionals, distributors and government representatives to get a feel of market trends, developments and the way ahead.” Country-wide, Saudi Arabia and the UAE are among the biggest Middle East markets for vehicle parc according to Techsci’s report, with Saudi contributing 7.49 million (5.11 million PVs, and 2.38 million CVs) to the region’s fleet, and the UAE 2.57 million (1.96 million PVs, 610,000 CVs). Meanwhile in Africa, vehicle parc currently stands at 43 million, including 32.7 million PVs and 10.3 million CVs. With more assembly plants, government initiatives to improve domestic manufacturing, and growing construction and infrastructure projects, vehicle sales volume in the world’s second largest continent is projected to reach 1.56 million units by 2024, growing at a CAGR of 4.68 percent during 2018-2024. The make-up of the African auto aftermarket in terms of component shares by value is very similar to the Middle East, however the two regions differ significantly in how passenger vehicles are serviced. TechSci’s report says 58 percent of PV services are carried out at authorised service centres in the Middle East, 36 percent at independent multi-brand service centres, and six percent at gas stations. In Africa, 50 percent of services are carried out in multi-brand centres, followed by authorised service centres (30 percent) and gas stations (20 percent). Car owners in both regions are fairly diligent in ensuring their vehicles are in top shape, with 80 percent of owners in the Middle East and 78 percent in Africa servicing their cars as per the service schedule. However, eight percent of
cars are serviced in African only once they’ve broken down, compared to one percent in the Middle East. Looking forward, key growth factors for the regional auto aftermarket include a growing demand for spare parts for vehicle modifications; increasing investments in new channels of customer engagement such as quick delivery modes and online spare parts sales. The second hand auto spare parts market in the Middle East has also developed into a fullfledged multi-million dollar industry, boasting more than 100 small and medium-sized enterprises spread across the region. The UAE is the major supplier of automotive spare parts within the Gulf region as well as for Iran, the CIS, Indian sub-continent and Africa. Organised by Messe Frankfurt Middle East, Automechanika Dubai covers the six product sections of Parts & Components; Electronics & Systems; Accessories & Customizing; Repair & Maintenance; Car Wash, Care & Reconditioning; and Tyres & Batteries. nternational tyre manufacturer Continental today announced that its Tyre Division is to be Official Sponsor of the 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) which will be staged in Egypt from 21 June to 19 July 2019. As part of a five-year agreement between Continental and the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF), the extensive rights package also includes the next two editions of the tournament for 2021 and 2023 that will be held in Cameroon and Ivory Coast respectively. “The Africa Cup of Nations is the biggest and most important sports competition in the African continent, a region where we are targeting further growth over the next few years,” said Jon Ander Garcia, Regional Manager - Africa & Middle East, Continental. “Africa is a key emerging market for Continental and football is undoubtedly the continent’s most popular sport. io Tinto recently signed an agreement with Caterpillar to supply and support mining machines, automation and enterprise technology systems for the new Koodaideri iron ore mine in Western Australia. Under the agreement, Rio Tinto and Caterpillar will work together in creating an automated mine operation that makes best use of data analytics and integration to enhance safety, optimize production, boost mining machine utilization and lower costs. Manitowoc showcases new Potain MRH 125 at Vertikal Days Vertikal Days is the largest lifting equipment event for the UK and Ireland and is centered firmly around lifting and access. The tower crane star of the Manitowoc booth is undoubtedly the new Potain MRH 125, which was recently debuted at bauma 2019. The innovative crane is the first in the European range to combine luffing jib and topless capabilities. It also uses hydraulic power for the luffing movement, for greater efficiency. Maximum capacity for the crane is 8 t while the maximum jib is 50 m, with a lift capacity of 2 t at the jib end. Users can configure the crane in freestanding heights of up to 57.9 m, while line speeds of up to 118 m/min are available with the 50LVF20 hoist winch. Optimized for transport, both on and off site The MRH 125 on display is owned by UK rental company Skyline Arcomet (part of UPERIO), which purchased the crane, and four more, at bauma 2019. Darren Whitford, managing director of Skyline Arcomet, commented on the recent investment. “We chose the new MRH 125 because it provides a strong return on investment for owners,” he said. “The crane’s adaptable design makes it suitable for all kinds of congested urban job sites, while transport and assembly times have also been optimized. The unique VVH hydraulic luffing mechanism and cylinders are pre-connected at the factory, meaning no assembly is required on site. “The MRH 125 has an optimized transport cost for a luffing jib crane in its capacity class,” Thibaut Le Besnerais, Manitowoc’s global product director for tower cranes, said. “It can also be mounted on our standard 1.6 m or 2 m K-masts for better optimization for fleet owners, and it offers lower power consumption than traditional luffing jib crane alternatives.” Outstanding operating performance A further advantage over traditional luffing jib cranes is that the hydraulic power of the VVH mechanism means there is no requirement to install luffing rope during installation. The hoisting winch, maintenance derrick and jib wind side plate are also pre-installed. Plus, there is no need to adapt the wind-sail plate on site, no matter what length of jib the crane is erected with. On-site, the crane delivers outstanding operating performance, no matter how constrained the job site. The jib can be raised from the horizontal to near vertical (88°) in just two minutes, while the counterjib measures just 7 m and is simple to connect during assembly. The out-of-service weathervaning radius of just 10 m, whatever the jib length, adds to its impressive features for tight job sites, while the cab has the option to attach to either side of the mast to suit project conditions.

Skyjack Breaks into North Western China Guelph, Ontario – Linamar Corporation’s (TSX:LNR) Skyjack division made its first delivery into North Western China earlier this month. Shaanxi Shuntong Equipment Rental is one of North Western China’s largest supplier of road machinery and aerial work equipment. Their rental products have worked on high profile projects throughout the region and they are adding Skyjack’s simply reliable machines to their equipment lineup. “Skyjack’s reputation for reliable machines was brought forward to us from some of our partners and we’re excited to place our first order with them,” said Mr. Yang, owner at Shaanxi Shuntong Equipment Rental. “A lot of the projects our customers work on are in tight spaces where having equipment that’s easily maneuverable is critical to completing the job at hand.” The rental company added Skyjack’s SJIII 4632 DC scissor lift, which is driveable at full height and boasts a maximum working height of 38’ (11.58 m), 450 lbs (204 kg) capacity, and lifts and lowers in under 60 seconds. When used in conjunction with other Checkmate equipment, the TR3 can be used as an anchorage for suspended work and winch operations and as a secure fall arrest point. The tripod’s maximum single-user weight for fall arrest, with one operator, is 310lbs/141kg. When used in assisted rescue, the maximum combined capacity load for workers is 620lbs/281kg and, for carrying goods, is 550lbs/250kg. New Predictive Powertrain Control: save fuel automatically – now also off the motorway in intercity service
Better protection for pedestrians and cyclists: optimised Sideguard Assist utilises the displays of the MirrorCam
The fuel consumption of the new Actros has been further reduced compared with its predecessor. Essentially contributing to this reduction is the expanded cruise control and transmission control system, Predictive Powertrain Control (PPC). New, among other things, is that PPC can now also be used in intercity service. Fuel economy in the new Actros is also supported by aerodynamic improvements with the MirrorCam and new side deflectors. In addition, some models also include new fuel-saving rear axle ratios.
Sideguard Assist has been available since 2016 and is currently the only system of its kind fully integrated in the vehicle architecture. Sideguard Assist can minimise the probability of dangerous accidents on the co-driver side during cornering or when changing lanes to the right. The warning system has now been further improved: the MirrorCam and Sideguard Assist work hand in hand in the new Actros – all relevant information is consolidated at one place on the MirrorCam displays. Active Brake Assist 5: the new generation of the emergency braking assist system The more sophisticated system can now better react to people, thanks to the combination of radar and camera system. The proven abilities of the predecessor remain: regardless of whether a stationary or preceding vehicle or person is in question – Active Brake Assist 5 supports the driver in case a collision may threaten. If needed, with automatic maximum full-stop braking as well. Important to note: Active Brake Assist 5 is merely a driver assistance system; the driver continues to have full responsibility for driving the vehicle safely. This responsibility also means that the driver must always have full control of the vehicle in traffic, amongst other things.
Connectivity and intuitive operation thanks to the new Multimedia Cockpit The new Multimedia Cockpit provides the driver with completely new control options and improved operating comfort. Apple CarPlay or Android Auto – never a problem. The Multimedia Cockpit has two large displays. The primary display replaces the conventional instrument cluster. All of the assistance systems and the new traffic sign detection function are shown here, for example. A second touchscreen in the instrument panel serves the operation of selected apps from the Mercedes-Benz Truck App Portal, virtual switches and for the representation of the new navigation system. Valuable for the company owner: real-time monitoring of the truck via Fleetboard and Mercedes-Benz Uptime thanks to the Truck Data Centre.

Commando™ DC300Ri: A New Multipurpose Drill Rig From Sandvik For Various Construction Applications steel life. Sandvik Mining and Rock Technology releases a new surface top hammer drill rig to its offering. The versatile Commando™ DC300Ri is ideal for drill and blast contractors as it suits multiple different construction applications. The new Commando DC300Ri is a modern fully radio remote-controlled, rubber tired surface top hammer drill rig with a vast hole size range (from 38 to 64 mm / 1½ - 2½ in.) using R28, R32 and T35 MF-rods. The rig is equipped with four wheel drive motors and oscillation, which guaratees excellent mobility and stability in difficult terrain. Together with a new boom structure and a reliable HL300 rock drill the new rig offers high productivity and low operating costs in challenging environments. Performance, intelligence and functionality The new Commando DC300Ri is extremely mobile and agile. It features four powerful tramming motors with maximum tramming force of 43 kN in total. Rubber tires and the ±10 degree oscillation contribute to excellent maneuverability. A completely new, re-enforced boom structure with extended swing and reach results in 20 percent larger coverage area (compared to earlier models) equaling 12m2. A flushing air capacity of 3.0m3/min allows deeper hole depth with larger hole sizes and the 24V electric system ads durability. The Commando DC300Ri follows the same unique modular design as other smaller Sandvik next generation surface drill rigs. This logical layout ensures high uptime with easily accessible service points, on-board diagnostics and small transportation dimensions. Being only 2.85 meters in height allows easy and fast transportation of the rig from site to site on a small truck or even a trailer. Versatility to different applications Wide hole range and application specific onboard options make the Commando DC300Ri a multipurpose drill rig. It suits various different civil construction works, such as road and railroad job sites, trenching, channeling and different foundation works. The extended reach and the optional hydraulic roll-over, which allows the feed to rotate 360 degrees, make the unit an ideal fit also for dimensional stone drilling and secondary breaking. With smaller hole sizes, the Commando DC300Ri suits tunneling applications perfectly. The hydraulic roll-over is a necessity in bolting and grouting and the optional one rod adding system gives flexibility and safety. A special fast tramming option for tunneling allows the drill rig to keep up with the other fast-moving machines underground. FIVE THINGS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW ABOUT BATTERIES
B
atteries are an important part of modern life and now Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) is starting to use them to power its machines - but how much do you actually know about them? Magnus Larsson, Development Engineer Batteries, Electromobility Systems, presents five facts about the lithium-ion batteries that are being used in construction equipment. 1. THEY LOOK NOTHING LIKE CONVENTIONAL BATTERIES To power something like a wheel loader or an excavator, you need a high level of system voltage and energy, which is more than a single battery cell (chocolate bar size) can provide. So, we generally take multiple cells and connect them together to create a battery pack. Looking at them, they are just big boxes - but there’s a lot going on inside. 2. BATTERIES COME IN ALL SHAPES AND FORMS You can buy a complete battery pack unit from a supplier (as Volvo CE does today), or you can assemble sub-modules and incorporate them into a custom-fit pack unit, or you can build everything in-house from scratch. Battery packs are sized and shaped differently for different machine types. 3. THEY’RE SURPRISINGLY BIG Large vehicles require large battery capacity - there’s no great surprise there. The lithiumion battery packs we use in construction equipment can weigh more than 400kg. 42 PlantAndEquipment.com | June 2019
Especially for large machines, there might be a need to install more than one of these battery packs, so the overall battery weight could easily exceed one ton. However, when it comes to lithium-ion batteries, significant progress is being made with respect to energy density. Developers are working on lighter and more volume efficient batteries. This essentially means that we can get more energy for the same volume or get the same energy capacity cheaper. 4. THEY’RE BECOMING CHEAPER At the moment, lithium-ion batteries are still quite expensive, but the price is constantly dropping. If the price continues to decrease at this rate, the cost barriers to electromobility innovation within the construction equipment industry will significantly reduce. This price decrease is a result of two factors: more battery demand globally, and an increase in energy density, as mentioned earlier. 5. WE’RE AT THE TURNING POINT WHERE IT MAKES SENSE TO ELECTRIFY BIG MACHINES With current technology, compact machines - like Volvo CE’s recently announced range of electric compact wheel loaders and excavators - can put in a full day’s work on electric energy from batteries. We’re starting to enter this stage with bigger machines. Although regular recharging is still required, it’s now a matter of when, not if, electric batteries can meet the energy and power requirements of heavy construction machines.

الميناء الجديد في كيسيان والذي يقع على بعد 16كم من مركز المدينة سيتم تطويره باستخدام منتجات االسمنت والفحم والبترول عقدا مع بنك تشاينا إيكسم لتمويل بناء المشروع ،وقال جيمس ماتشاريا الموجهة للمنطقة في عملية إنشائه ،وقعت الحكومة ً سكرتير مجلس الوزراء للنقل والبنية التحتية أنه قد تم اختيار موقع كيسيان إلمكانية توسيعه مع توفير الخدمات اللوجستية والمجمع الصناعي. سيتم ربط الميناء باستخدام السكك الحديدية ،مع وصالت مساعدة أخرى تصل إلى الطرق وصالت الكهرباء ومباني األقمار الصناعية. بعد اكتمال تشييد الميناء سيتم تأجيره عبر اتفاقية مع هيئة موانئ كينيا لمشغلين فرعيين .سيحتوي الميناء الجديد على رصيفين متعددي االستخدامات بحمولة 3000طن باإلضافة إلى رصيف قارب أعمال.
