HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
CELEBRATING HISPANIC & LATINO CULTURE
A Month to Celebrate, Learn, and Honor
Each year from September 15th to October 15th, the United States observes Hispanic Heritage Month, a time dedicated to recognizing the rich histories, vibrant cultures, and invaluable contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. The celebration began in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week, established by President Lyndon B. Johnson, and was later expanded to a full month by President Ronald Reagan in 1988. The chosen dates are significant: September 15th marks the anniversary of independence for several Latin American countries–Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. While Mexico, Chile, and Belize celebrate their independence in the following days.
SEPT 15 - OCT 15

Hispanic Heritage Month is more than a commemoration of history; it is a recognition of the diverse voices and stories that have contributed to shaping the United States. Hispanic and Latino communities have played pivotal roles in fields ranging from politics and business to the arts, science, and military service. Their traditions, language, music, and cuisine enrich the cultural fabric of the nation, while their leadership and innovation continue to influence the country’s future.
This month serves as a reminder to honor the past while celebrating the present contributions of over 62 million Hispanic Americans, the largest ethnic minority in the U.S. It is also an opportunity to learn, engage, and uplift the stories that have too often gone untold. By embracing and celebrating Hispanic heritage, we foster greater unity, understanding, and appreciation for the diverse identities that define the American experience.
As we recognize Hispanic Heritage Month, let us celebrate the resilience, creativity, and impact of Hispanic and Latino communities. Their legacies are woven into the story of America, remind us that the nation’s strength lies in its diversity.

The Team @ Cherry Point
USMC TECOM SMIP ATHLETIC TRAINER SITE VISIT
July
2025
What is SMIP program?
Team Cognito (Cognito Systems, LLC—a Mentor-Protégé Joint Venture between Resolution Think and Quarterline Consulting Services) provides Athletic Trainer (AT) support to the United States Marine Corps under the Sports Medicine and Injury Prevention (SMIP) program. We currently employ 55 ATs across 28 units located on 13 USMC bases worldwide. These sites include U.S. CONUS installations (Quantico, Camp Lejeune, Cherry Point, Camp Pendleton, 29 Palms, Bridgeport, Camp Mateo, Camp Horno, and Miramar), Hawaii (Kaneohe Bay), and Japan (Iwakuni, Camp Hansen, and Camp Schwab).

These ATs provide the following services to the units they support:
1) Documentation/Administration:
Athletic Trainers are responsible for participating in quality-of-care reviews and inservice training, maintaining accurate treatment documentation, and ensuring the safe and effective use of equipment. Duties include tracking and reporting medical supply needs, recommending new equipment, and documenting all assessments, treatments, and follow-up care for research, analysis, and injury prevention efforts.

Injury Prevention and Physical Training Program Design:
Athletic Trainers support Marine commands by helping design and implement evidence-based physical readiness and training programs that improve performance and reduce injuries. They collaborate with commanders and Force Fitness Instructors, stay aligned with unit training schedules and policies, and provide coaching to service members on anatomy, physiology, conditioning,

Athletic Trainers evaluate and treat musculoskeletal injuries in coordination with physicians, using a wide range of therapeutic exercises, modalities, and equipment. They provide post-injury and post-surgical rehabilitation, design protective supports and braces, and deliver emergency first aid. Trainers also guide support staff during rehabilitation procedures while adhering to clinical and professional
Meeting ATs onsite at Cherry Point and Camp Lejeune
Team Cognito management (Mash Rahman, David Zhang, Raj Dhingra, Rosie Catanoso, and Tracy Murphy) traveled to Jacksonville, NC to meet with our Athletic Trainers (ATs) at Camp Lejeune and Cherry Point.
Camp Lejeune: 15 ATs supporting 7 units
Cherry Point: 3 ATs supporting 2 units
We visited ATs at their assigned units and workspaces across both bases. Each site is spread out to ensure Marines have direct access to the care they need. Some units are staffed with a single AT, while others have 2–3 ATs providing coverage.

KEVEN’S KITCHEN
Skillet Chicken and Kale

Autumn is upon us, and I’ve been hosting dinners for community members. Chicken is a great and economical way to get a satisfying and simple dish that everyone enjoys –
Ingredients:
1 tablespoon paprika
1 tablespoon sea salt
½ tablespoon freshly cracked black pepper
8 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs, (about 3 pounds)
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 medium shallot, minced
1 ½ cups chicken stock
2 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon white miso
2 tablespoons cold salted butter
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, (from 1 lemon)
2 tablespoons chopped fresh tarragon leaves
¼ cup capers, drained
2 bunches curly kale, stemmed and roughly chopped
1 (13.5-ounce) can cannellini beans, drained and rinsed

In a small bowl, combine the paprika, salt, and pepper. Pat the chicken dry and season all over with the paprika mixture.
Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or braiser over medium-high heat. Once the oil is glistening, working in batches, add the chicken skin sides down. Cook until the skin is golden brown and crisp, about 5 minutes. Flip and continue cooking until just browned, about 3 minutes more. Transfer to a plate and continue with the remaining chicken.
Once the chicken is done, reduce the heat to medium. Add the shallot and cook, stirring often, until just tender, about 4 minutes. Add 1 cup of the chicken stock, miso and the mustard. Bring to a simmer, scraping up any brown bits as you stir, until the sauce is reduced and thick enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon, about 5 minutes.
Remove the skillet from the heat and slowly whisk in the cold butter. Once the butter is melted, stir in the lemon juice, tarragon, and capers. Add the kale and beans and toss until coated and the kale is wilted. Return the chicken to the pan, nestling it in.
Pour the broth over the chicken, cover, and bring to a simmer over low heat. Cook until the internal temperature of the chicken reaches 165°F on a meat thermometer, about 35 minutes.
For extra crispy skin, turn on the broiler with a rack in the center position. Broil until the skins brown and start to bubble, about 3 minutes. You can swap other leafy greens like chard for the kale, add tomatoes or butternut squash as well. I like to serve with crispy oven-roasted potatoes.

BOOK NOOK
Autumn is the best time to get lost in a good book. This autumn-inspired list is filled with stories that pair perfectly with your favorite cozy corner and a mug of something warm. Settle in, sip slow, and let the season turn its own pages.

*Keven’s Pick: It’s Not the End of the World
For fiction, I picked It’s Not the End of the World by Jonathan Parks-Ramage. I was drawn to it because it’s sharp, funny, and a little unexpected…reminding us that even in the face of uncertainty, there’s always room for perspective and even humor. For me, it’s a good reminder that while the challenges we face can feel heavy, they’re rarely the end of the story. I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.
Thriller: The Secret of Secrets
In this sixth installment of the Robert Langdon series, Harvard professor Langdon uncovers a groundbreaking discovery that challenges everything we know about the human mind. The novel delves into themes of consciousness, artificial intelligence, and ancient mysteries, offering a fast-paced narrative that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.
As Heard in Byte-Sized: Caste
Caste by Isabel Wilkerson examines the hidden hierarchies that have shaped societies, revealing how caste systems influence every aspect of life from social interactions to institutional power. With a blend of history, storytelling, and analysis, the book challenges readers to confront the forces that maintain inequality and consider paths toward justice.

As Heard in Byte-Sized: Acquired
Acquired dives into the stories behind some of the world’s most fascinating companies and business deals, exploring how they were built, sold, or transformed. With a mix of deep research and engaging storytelling, the podcast reveals the strategies, risks, and people behind major business successes and failures.

*Keven’s Pick: The Advantage
In Business books, I am re-reading The Advantage by Patrick Lencioni, a book that really hits at the heart of what makes organizations thrive. Lencioni argues that the biggest edge any company can have isn’t technology or strategy, it’s organizational health. That means building trust, clarity, accountability, and a culture where people are truly aligned. For me, it’s a reminder that when we get the fundamentals of teamwork and communication right, everything else - performance, innovation, growth - follows more naturally. It’s a practical, insightful read I think many of you will connect with.

Romance: The Honeycrisp Orchard Inn
The Honeycrisp Orchard Inn by Valerie Bowman is a contemporary romance novel. Set in a picturesque apple orchard on Long Island, follow the story of Ellie Lawson, an event planner who returns to her family’s inn after personal setbacks, and her interactions with Aiden, the son of the orchard owner.

Thanks for reading!
