Relaxing rounds in the Scottish Borders 01

The golf in the Scottish Borders is glorious. The region is renowned for having some of the friendliest clubs in the country and the scenic, easy to reach courses are tremendous value for money. More and more people are booking golf breaks in the stunning south east of Scotland where there are more than 21 great courses to choose from. Two of the region’s main golfing highlights are the Roxburghe course near Kelso and the Cardrona course close to Peebles. Both were designed by Dave Thomas, the highly regarded course architect

02

and former Ryder Cup player who created the famous Belfry. The Roxburghe sits within a large country estate owned by the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe. A Jacobean mansion serves as the

resort course, Cardrona has featured as a venue on the European Challenge Tour. Peebles is a challenging upland course of great character, boasting stunning panoramic views. One of the most picturesque courses in the country, it is known for its lush fairways and velvety greens. Peebles should certainly be on your list if you are planning to fit in a few rounds. The town’s motto is ‘Peebles for pleasure’ and a lot of enjoyment can be had from the golf course. Another Scottish Borders golfing gem is the Hirsel, part of the Hirsel Estate on the border between Scotland and England. A testing parkland course with super views across the Cheviot Hills, the Hirsel has some wonderful par 3 holes with water hazards. Always in great condition, the Hirsel has even been tagged the Augusta of the Scottish Borders.

02

Hawick is the oldest golf club in the Scottish Borders – established in 1877 – and the course follows the contours of Vertish Hill with the higher holes affording spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Nick Faldo and Colin Montgomerie are both honorary members of Hawick and indeed Faldo holds the course record. 03

The Roxburghe’s signature hole is an irresistible par 5 aptly named Viaduct, the elevated tee affording a breathtaking view of the river and the grand viaduct that spans it. The Roxburghe also happens to be one of Sam Torrance’s favourite courses. The Cardrona is a mix of parkland and moorland, featuring big contoured greens and yawning bunkers, typical of Thomas’ style. The outward 9 is especially memorable and the 7th, a lovely par 4 playing to an elevated green, is a particular highlight. A great

On the rugged Berwickshire coast you’ll discover the epic challenge of Eyemouth, famous for its daunting 6th hole which demands that you hit over a large gully towards the green. This incredible par 3, in fact, has been hailed as Britain’s most extraordinary golf hole. As well as all these outstanding 18-hole courses there are some excellent 9-hole layouts in the Scottish Borders. St Boswells is an enjoyable test by the River Tweed, Melrose is located in a fantastic setting and provides a challenge for all standards of golfer, Selkirk is another great short course set on heathland while Newcastleton is similarly scenic. The majority of the region’s 9-hole and 18-hole courses are included in the excellent Freedom of the Fairways Golf Passport. Scotland’s best-selling golf pass allows visiting golfers to enjoy the wonderful golf courses of the Scottish Borders at a winning price.

Away from the fairways

The Scottish Borders has a deserved reputation as a great short break destination. The region boasts some of the country’s finest scenery, historic towns like Melrose and Hawick and a host of other attractions. Follow the Borders Abbey Way and discover the four great Scottish Borders Abbeys. Explore the striking pink sandstone ruins of Melrose Abbey and pay a visit to 12th century Kelso Abbey, the largest of the Scottish Borders Abbeys. Witness graceful Jedburgh Abbey by the banks of the Jed Water and see the evocative remains of Dryburgh Abbey, next to the River Tweed. Highly recommended is a trip to Abbotsford. The former residence of Sir Walter Scott is currently closed to the public but you can still explore the beautiful landscaped gardens, designed by the novelist himself. Floors Castle, near Kelso, has beautiful grounds and is Scotland’s largest inhabited castle, while

34

Traquair House near Innerleithen happens to be the oldest continuously inhabited house in the country. Thirlestane Castle, at Lauder, is one of Scotland’s oldest castles, while Paxton House is regarded as one of the finest 18th century country houses in all of Britain. There is a wealth of wildlife in the Scottish Borders and St Abbs Head National Nature Reserve on the Berwickshire coast attracts some amazing birdlife, with guillemots, puffins, kittiwakes and fulmars all drawn to the sheer cliffs and offshore stacks. Visit the Tweed Valley Osprey Project at Kailzie Gardens near Peebles to see these rare and beautiful birds of prey, or make a trip to Philiphaugh Salmon Viewing Centre near Selkirk to learn about the fascinating

lifecycle of salmon as they make their annual migration from the sea to spawn in the burns of the hills. Besides the region’s great golf offering, the Scottish Borders has become a major centre for mountain biking, one of the fastest growing sports in Scotland. Take to the trails at two world-class 7stanes biking centres in the Borders. Glentress and Innerleithen are considered two of the best biking centres in Britain, while Newcastleton is a great introduction to biking. For a more relaxed cycling experience, why not pedal along the Four Abbeys Cycle Route, or the Tweed Cycle Way, running between Biggar and Berwickupon-Tweed? The Scottish Borders also has an excellent range of walking trails. St Cuthbert’s Way stretches from lovely Melrose to the magnificent Northumberland Coast, while linking with the Sir Walter Scott Way, the Roman Heritage Way and the Southern Upland :D\ 6FRWODQGďV &RDVW WR &RDVW 1DWLRQDO 7UDLO $OVR the famous Pennine Way concludes in the Borders village of Kirk Yetholm. The Scottish Borders is famed for its rolling countryside but there are some superb watersports opportunities available in the region too. The coastline around St Abbs offers excellent surfing, kayaking and diving with some fantastic wreck dives around St Abbs and Eyemouth.

02

03

There’s excellent salmon fishing on the River Tweed, with more fish caught to fly on Scotland’s fourth longest river than on any other river in the UK.

01 Jedburgh Abbey was founded in 1138. 02 Walkers beside Loch of the Lowes. 03 Fly fishing for salmon on the River Tweed.

If you’re looking to join local celebrations, between June and August is Common Riding season in the Scottish Borders, when towns throughout the region celebrate their history with much pageantry and some spectacular horse riding. These ancient customs are superb fun, with the camaraderie all too apparent among the crowd and visitors are always welcome.

Housed in an 18th century coaching inn on the banks of the River Teviot is the Teviot Smokery. Here you can see salmon smoked slowly over oak chips, before sampling this delicious delicacy in the restaurant.

Dining out in the Scottish Borders is a tantalising prospect since the region is renowned for the quality of its local produce. Look out for sublime Buccleuch beef and highly prized Scottish Borders lamb on restaurant menus and make sure you try some of the award-winning Scottish Borders cheeses.

Many towns in the Scottish Borders have monthly farmers’ markets where you can meet local producers and buy their meats, fish, cheese and other wonderful regional products. You might be visiting the Scottish Borders for the golf, but make sure you enjoy some of the region’s many other attractions.
