Perfect for a golf break Perthshire lies in the heart of Scotland, where the Highlands and the Lowlands meet. Golf flourishes in Perthshire’s lush countryside and in all there are 39 courses in the region. You can golf in style at worldfamous Gleneagles or enjoy a relaxing round on a 9-hole country course. Perthshire has a proud golfing heritage. The game has gripped the region for a very long time and indeed golf has been played here since the 15th century. King James IV learned to play on the public parklands by the River Tay. The city’s South Inch may have been the site of the world’s first golf course and the Royal Perth Golfing Society was the first club to receive a royal charter. In this stunning part of Scotland you’ll find some of the country’s finest golf courses. Any fan of golf has heard of Gleneagles and this luxury venue boasts three championship layouts: the King’s Course, the Queen’s Course and the PGA Centenary Course. Gleneagles will host the Ryder Cup in 2014. Europe and America will battle it out on the Jack Nicklausdesigned PGA Centenary Course and it will be the first time in more than 40 years that Scotland has hosted the tournament, nowadays one of the world’s greatest sporting occasions.

02

01

Besides the glory of Gleneagles, Perthshire has plenty of other courses worth exploring. Crieff Ferntower – just a few miles from Gleneagles – is one of Scotland’s best inland courses and was designed by the legendary James Braid, the man behind the Queen’s Course at Gleneagles. Braid produced some of his finest work in Perthshire. Kinross has two excellent parkland courses which merit your attention. The Montgomery and The Bruce both overlook lovely Loch Leven. The Montgomery is the more challenging of the two courses but both are immensely enjoyable. Blairgowrie has two championship courses. The Rosemount was originally laid out by Alistair MacKenzie (the creator of Augusta National) and later re-designed by Braid. It was also the venue of Greg Norman’s first European tour victory. The Lansdowne is the newer of the two courses and was designed in the 1970s by Peter Alliss and Dave Thomas.

03

01 The parkland course at Auchterarder. 02 Craigie Hill Golf Course, Perth. 03 A 9-hole gem, St Fillans Golf Course. There are many more golfing delights in Perthshire that await your discovery. Alyth is a fantastic heathland course, the original 9 holes routed by ‘Old’ Tom Morris, with Braid later completing the 18. Glenisla is a course of undulating parkland, while the Strathmore Rannaleroch course has generous fairways and rolling greens. Aberfeldy is an appealing course by the banks of the River Tay and Pitlochry is a fine challenge set amid vivid Perthshire scenery. The city of Perth itself has several quality courses. Craigie Hill features one of the toughest holes in Britain (an uphill par 4 called Spion Kop) while the King James VI golf course is a real novelty. It is the only self-contained river island golf course in Britain and only reachable via a walkway on the railway bridge which spans the fast-flowing Tay. Perthshire’s charming 9-hole courses are often the focal point of village life. They tend to be very

welcoming, represent tremendous value for money and are ideal for families or those just seeking a couple of hours of fun golf. Dalmunzie, in the far north of Perthshire, is one of Britain’s highest courses and throws in a castle for good measure. Killin by Loch Tay features one of the most scenic closing holes in all of Scotland, while Blairgowrie has its own ‘Wee Course’. The Crieff area has a handful of picturesque 9-hole courses and Comrie is a hilly challenge with incredible views. Muthill is a short and pleasant parkland course and even Gleneagles has its own 9-hole layout. St Fillans, by the River Earn, is another lovely 9-hole experience. Perthshire’s 9-hole courses have bags of character and can be a wonderful addition to your golf break. Whatever kind of golfing challenge you seek, Perthshire will reward you for your efforts.

Perthshire’s list of other attractions is as impressive as its range of golf courses. One thing the region is renowned for – besides golf – is for being an adventure playground, with all kinds of exciting outdoor pursuits available for thrill seekers.

High adrenalin activities on offer include white water rafting, canyoning, abseiling and mountain biking. You can even go skiing at Glenshee. Loch Tay and Loch Earn are superb for watersports like sailing, kayaking, water skiing and wakeboarding. On a more sedate level, the fishing in the region is excellent with Perthshire’s rivers, such as the River Tay, full of salmon and trout. There is good walking in Perthshire where you can take to the 64 mile long Cateran Trail which follows ancient drove roads or perhaps you might enjoy a peaceful woodland walk at the Hermitage near Dunkeld. Sometimes it’s enough to just stand back and admire Perthshire’s stunning scenery. The Queen’s View near Pitlochry offers up an epic panorama which takes in

In terms of cultural entertainment, Perth boasts a vibrant arts scene and has the Perth Theatre (one of Scotland’s oldest theatres) as well as the modern and dazzling Perth Concert Hall. Both run busy programmes of events to satisfy the most ardent arts enthusiasts. The city has a good range of restaurants that showcase local produce and on the first Saturday of the month you can head along to Perth Farmers’ Market to buy meats, cheeses and other regional delights direct from local producers. Not far north of Pitlochry, the House of Bruar is a well-known emporium which specialises in luxury food items and quality country clothing. Stay in Perthshire, play in Fife As well as enjoying great golf in Perthshire, why not pop over to the Kingdom of Fife for a round or two? 01

After all, St Andrews is just 40 miles from Gleneagles and many of Fife’s courses are even closer than that. As well as the lure of the Old Course (set to host the Open once more in 2015) there is the magnificence of Kingsbarns and the classic links at Crail while Lundin Links is another truly unforgettable golfing experience. Inland there are wonderful parkland courses such as Ladybank, Forrester Park, Dunfermline, Balbirnie Park and Charleton. There are even courses like Elie Sports Club and Balgove which are specially designed for youngsters.
