A round at the Old Course, with its famous Road Hole and Swilcan Bridge, is a dream for many but the wonderful thing is that you can make it a reality.

Every five years the Open Championship is played at the Old Course and nowhere has hosted golf’s greatest tournament more often. St Andrews’ next turn is in 2015, and the list of past champions here reads like a who’s who of golf: Tiger Woods, Nick Faldo, Seve Ballesteros, Jack Nicklaus, Sam Snead, Bobby Jones... all legends who have triumphed on the most recognisable stretch of links on the planet. And you can follow in their footsteps.

01 The world-renowned Old Course, St Andrews.

Of course it should be pointed out that there are many other sublime golf courses in and around

02

For information and to book accommodation go to www.visitscotland.com

Around 6 miles down the coast from St Andrews is Kingsbarns, unveiled as recently as 2000 and instantly hailed as one of Scotland’s finest courses. Every October, Kingsbarns comes together with the Old Course and Carnoustie in Angus to host the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, one of the biggest dates on the European Tour. Keep heading south and you’ll agree that the Fife coastline is bejewelled with golfing gems. Crail Golfing Society is one of the oldest golf clubs in the world and its two golf courses are divine. Then there is the beautiful Balcomie Links whose original holes were also designed by Morris. Elie is another superb links test where local boy James Braid cut his teeth. Braid would go on to win the Open five times and design famous courses like the King’s and Queen’s at Gleneagles. Not far at all from Elie is Lundin Links which has been placed among the top links courses in Britain by Golf Monthly magazine and is a course that has often been used for Open qualifying. Fife may be synonymous with its links courses but venture inland and you will be rewarded too. Ladybank is a lovely parkland course that has also been used for Open qualifying while Cupar is rich in history and has the oldest continuing 9-hole layout in the world. Nearby is Kingarrock Hickory Golf Club where you can pick up original hickory clubs, together with balls and tees, and be transported back in time to the beginnings of the game.

St Andrews. The New Course itself is more than a century old and was designed by ‘Old’ Tom Morris, the St Andrews-born four-times Open champion who created such timeless classics as Muirfield, Carnoustie and Royal Dornoch. St Andrews also boasts the Duke’s Course, the Jubilee Course, the Eden Course and the Castle Course, which opened to wide acclaim in 2008. You could have your best ever golf break without leaving St Andrews, but that would mean you missing out on Fife’s many other superb courses.

Behind the Royal and Ancient Clubhouse at the Old Course in St Andrews is the British Golf Museum and here you can explore the history of the game and learn about those two famous golfing sons of Fife, ‘Old’ Tom Morris and James Braid. Golf was born on the east coast of Scotland and the game has been played in some form or other in Fife for 600 years. There is an unyielding passion for the game in this idyllic corner of Scotland and the locals are very proud of Fife’s long golfing pedigree. Golfing in Fife, you can’t fail to be inspired by your surroundings. These timeless courses will thrill you and provide you with lifelong memories.

Ladybank has been regularly used as an Open Championship final qualifying course since 1978. It is a classic heathland layout set amongst heather, scots pine and silver birch. Accuracy off the tee is more important than length. Visitors welcome. Reduced rates spring and autumn.

Æ™¶±≠≥s¨®∞≤

Did you know? Leven and Lundin Links are two courses that are locked together in the history books since their links layouts overlapped in the early 19th century. It wasn’t until James Braid was commissioned to create a new course at Lundin that the pair became separate entities, and now exist as two distinct links challenges. LOCHGELLY GOLF CLUB

The Old Course Par 72 6,721 yards 18 holes open venue The oldest golf course in the world. To play down the 18th fairway of this iconic course is to walk in the footsteps of golfing legends from every generation. The Swilcan Bridge and Hell Bunker are recognised across the globe, yet the greatest feature of the Old Course is that despite its grand status it remains a public golf course. A handicap certificate of 24 for men and 36 for women is required and the course is closed on Sundays. Catering: All year at the Swilcan Restaurant, Links Clubhouse. For more information on making an advance reservation or entering the ballot visit www.standrews.org.uk/howtobook Green Fees: £70 – £150

Æ™¶±≠s¨∞≤Ø The New Course Par 71 6,625 yards 18 holes The oldest ‘new’ course in the world, the second course at The Home of Golf was designed by the ‘Keeper of the Green’ in 1895 and was imaginatively named to differentiate from its famous neighbour. Boasting undulating fairways and challenging greens, the New Course is a classic test of Links golf and offers a first class experience in its own right. The course can be booked one day in advance or online. Catering: All year at the Swilcan Restaurant, Links Clubhouse. Green Fees: £32 – 70

Æ™¶±≠≥s¨∞≤Ø The Jubilee Course Par 72 6,742 yards 18 holes The third championship course at The Home of Golf, the Jubilee is considered by many to be the most challenging course on the famous Links. Built in 1897, it was originally intended for use by ladies and beginners however after seeing its prime golfing location between the New Course and the sea, the Jubilee was converted to a championship course in 1988. The course can be booked one day in advance or online. Catering: All year at the Swilcan Restaurant, Links Clubhouse. Green Fees: £32 – 70

Old Course 49810

Castle Course

The Castle Course Par 71 6,759 yards 18 holes The newest addition to St Andrews Links, The Castle Course was built in 2008 becoming the seventh course at The Home of Golf and part of the largest public golfing complex in Europe. Set on a rugged cliff-top with spectacular views over St Andrews, The Castle Course offers a memorable golfing experience. Tee times can be booked by phone or online. Catering: The Castle Course clubhouse. Green Fees: £60 – 120

Æ™¶±≠≥s¨∞≤Ø The Eden Course Par 70 6,250 yards 18 holes Only slightly more forgiving than its contemporaries on the seaward side of the Links, The Eden Course was built in 1914 by internationally renowned designer Harry S. Colt whose use of buried natural boundaries and severe bunkers provides a course full of character. The course can be booked one day in advance or online. Catering: All year at the Eden Clubhouse. Green Fees: £20 – 40

Æ™¶≠≥s¨∞≤Ø The Strathtyrum Course Par 69 5,620 yards 18 holes Designed to complement the tougher championship layouts at The Home of Golf, the Strathtyrum was opened in 1993. Although few in number (15), the bunkers are cunningly placed – there is a considerable emphasis on iron play accuracy. The greens themselves are large and have slopes and borrows which can test even the most confident putters. The course can be booked one day in advance or online. Catering: All year at the Eden Clubhouse. Green Fees: £12 – 25

Æ™¶≠≥s¨∞≤Ø The Balgove Course Par 30 1,520 yards 9 holes The Balgove is the only nine hole course at The Home of Golf and primarily caters for families, children and beginners. Featuring bunkers and a double green, the Balgove is the perfect practise ground for Links golf and consolidates St Andrews Links reputation as a resort that caters for all ages and abilities. The course can be booked one day in advance or online. Catering: All year at the Eden Clubhouse. Green Fees: £8 – 12

Fife offers many other charms besides those wonderful golf courses. When you fancy some time away from those hallowed fairways you’ll find there’s plenty to keep you occupied.

Strike out from St Andrews and see more of the spectacular Fife coastline. The area known as the East Neuk is blessed with beautiful beaches and quaint fishing villages like Elie and Pittenweem.

As well as being a golfer’s paradise, St Andrews is a place of learning. The ancient town is home to Scotland’s oldest university and a great deal of pleasure can be had strolling along the cobbled streets and admiring the grandeur of buildings like St Salvator’s College. The dramatic ruins of St Andrews Cathedral are also worth exploring.

There are many other sporting activities besides golf available in Fife. You could be sailing, windsurfing or kayaking or you could try land yachting with Blown Away Experiences. Perhaps you might just want to walk some of the Fife Coastal Path and find hidden coves and vast stretches of golden sand with barely anyone in sight.

St Andrews is well served for nice bars and restaurants and there is always the temptation to indulge at one of the town’s luxury spa hotels. St Andrews is rich in luxury as well as history.

Keep a look out for some of the amazing wildlife in the region. There is a rich variety of marine life in the waters off the Fife coast, including dolphins and grey seals.

Wander around the pretty harbours and select fresh seafood from the menus of local restaurants. Learn about the area’s strong seafaring tradition at the Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther, a town also renowned within Scotland for the quality of its fish and chips.

Visit the offshore islands of Inchcolm and Inchkeith which are home to thousands of seabirds. Vast numbers of puffins gather on the Isle of May, a world-renowned bird sanctuary and nature reserve that is reachable by boat from Anstruther. Just north of St Andrews you can enjoy the Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve and the Eden Estuary Local Nature Reserve. Both are recognised internationally for their unique habitats and rich variety of animals and flora. For a great family day out, try Deep Sea World. Scotland’s national aquarium is dramatically positioned beneath the Forth Bridge in North Queensferry. Here you will find all manner of marine creatures and you can even swim with sharks. Another good option is Robinson Crusoe Adventure Park at Elie Holiday Park, a new themed activity park which celebrates Fife’s links with the famous fictional castaway. Or you can head to the Scottish Deer Centre near the market town of Cupar and see several species of deer from around the world, as well as enjoying the spectacular bird of prey demonstrations.

Step back in time and visit the 11th century Dunfermline Abbey, the final resting place of Robert the Bruce, or explore the Royal Palace of Falkland and its beautifully landscaped gardens. Make time for the carefully restored village of Culross whose highlight is a striking 16th century palace. Fife is filled with fascinating history and grand architecture. For something a little different, investigate Scotland’s Secret Bunker. You won’t find it on a golf course; it’s an actual underground bunker. Head below and learn how the British Government planned to cope in the event of a nuclear attack. Wherever your interests lie beyond golf, you won’t be short of inspiration in the Kingdom of Fife. So get out and about and fully enjoy this beautiful region.

Stay in Fife, play in Perthshire

01

While you’re in Fife, pop over to neighbouring Perthshire and enjoy some of Scotland’s finest inland courses. St Andrews may be famous but so is Gleneagles with its three championship courses: the King’s, the Queen’s and the PGA Centenary. In lush Perthshire you’ll be golfing in some of the country’s most glorious scenery which can only help inspire your game to great heights. Discover the joys of well-known courses such as Crieff Ferntower, Blairgowrie Rosemount, and Pitlochry or seek out the 9-hole hidden gems of Comrie, Killin or St Fillans. Wherever you choose to play, remember there are two excellent golf discount tickets available – the Perthshire Green Card and the Perthshire Highlands Golf Ticket – both of which will allow you to make big savings on green fees.

Visit from 23 – 26 August and you can see the Johnnie Walker Championship being played on the PGA Centenary Course at Gleneagles – the course which will become the centre of the golfing world in 2014 through its hosting of the Ryder Cup.
