The perfect golfing break

01

With its 200 miles of epic coastline and acres of rolling countryside, Dumfries & Galloway is a region ripe for exploration. And if you’re a golfer all the better since the south west of Scotland boasts many fine golfing venues, including some classic links courses. There are three intriguing golf trails you can follow in Dumfries & Galloway and you can make some great savings too by picking up the excellent Gateway to Golf Pass which is exclusive to the region.

The legendary golf course architect James Braid weaved his magic on the lush landscape of Dumfries & Galloway. Powfoot, which opened in 1903, is a classic Braid design. It is a superb test of golf with the whins, the rough and the wind blowing off the Solway Firth, providing a real challenge to most golfers. A blend of links and parkland, Powfoot is proper bump and run territory and is one of Scotland’s best kept golfing secrets.

01 The parkland course at Newton Stewart. 02 Wigtownshire County Golf Course. 03 Scenic Stranraer Golf Course on Loch Ryan.

One of the undoubted golfing highlights in Dumfries & Galloway is Southerness, routinely recognised by Golf Monthly as one of the top 100 courses in Britain and Ireland. Set on the Solway coast and offering

02

02

The ancient town of Dumfries is fortunate to have four fine golf courses and among them is Dumfries & County, an outstanding parkland with immaculate greens and great views of the Nith Valley. Dumfries & Galloway is another excellent parkland course, with tree-lined fairways and greenside ponds.

03

amazing views of the Solway Firth, the Galloway Hills and the Lake District, this championship course is accustomed to hosting leading tournaments. One for the golfing purist, Southerness is links golf at its best and features an exhilarating run of tricky par 4 holes. This course alone makes a compelling case for booking your golf break in Dumfries & Galloway. A few miles from the picturesque town of Kirkcudbright, you’ll find Brighouse Bay, another of Dumfries & Galloway’s championship courses. A challenging seaside test with more than a few water hazards, Brighouse Bay delivers some fascinating holes and glorious cliff-top views over the Irish Sea. Newton Stewart is a parkland gem in the heart of the Galloway Hills, while Wigtownshire County is a classic links course beside lovely Luce Bay. There are so many great and varied courses to choose from. Stranraer on the south west coast was the final course

designed by the talented and prolific Braid. An undulating parkland layout on the shores of Loch Ryan, boasting breathtaking views of the Isle of Arran and Ailsa Craig, Stranraer is certainly worth a few hours of your time. Even better, you can shape your break by following one of the region’s three golf trails. Each holds its own attractions. The Tiger Trail focuses on the more epic golfing challenges such as Southerness and Powfoot. The Challenge Trail has some real highlights too, featuring courses designed by Braid, Willie Fernie and Ben Sayers. The Little Gems Trail, as the name suggests, concentrates mainly on those 9-hole courses which are ideal for families or those short of time. One thing you should do if you’re golfing in Dumfries & Galloway is pick up the Gateway to Golf Pass, with which you will make significant savings on green fees. You can choose between the 3-round pass and the 6-round pass. Both are great incentives for golfing in this magnificent and unspoilt part of the country.

The gateway to great value golf Pick up a Gateway to Golf Pass, your passport to great value golf in Dumfries & Galloway. Choose from 26 fantastic courses and enjoy an unforgettable and very affordable golf break in the stunning south west of Scotland.

The 6-round Gateway to Golf Pass enables visiting golfers to enjoy a wonderful all-round golfing experience in the region. Enjoy playing six courses over five consecutive days, selecting from all the courses involved in the Gateway to Golf scheme. Armed with your Gateway to Golf Pass you can opt to focus on one of the region’s three golf trails – Tiger, Challenge or Little Gems – or mix and match to suit. Wherever you decide to play – and it’s entirely up to you – the distances between courses are never great and you are sure to receive a warm welcome from the clubs.

You have two options with the Gateway to Golf Pass and either way it’s the winning ticket.

Dumfries & Galloway’s golf trails all offer a unique experience and each trail has been devised to reflect golfing ability and preferred course style, as well as taking into account time and budget.

The 3-round Gateway to Golf Pass is the perfect introduction to golf in Dumfries & Galloway. With it you can play three of the region’s courses – including one on the Tiger Trail if you wish – over a five day period while making good savings.

The Tiger Trail centres on the more epic courses like Southerness and Powfoot. These are exceptional venues which deliver all the correct ingredients in terms of length, quality, landscape and character. You will need to bring your top game for the Tiger Trail.

02

The Challenge Trail features a range of memorable courses that are ideally suited to the majority of golfers. There is no shortage of quality here either. You will do well to shoot low at Moffat, and Wigtownshire County asks questions of both low and high handicappers. The Little Gems Trail focuses mostly on the region’s 9-hole courses which can offer up a couple of hours of real golfing pleasure. New Galloway and Gatehouse of Fleet are good fun and will also keep you on your toes. The Little Gems Trail gives you great golf minus the high fees. Whether you concentrate on one of these trails or not, the Gateway to Golf Pass is fantastic value and is easy to use. Just hand over your voucher at the golf course you’re about to play. That could be Lochmaben, a pretty parkland course where the second hole takes you past the site of Robert the Bruce’s castle. Or you could be playing lovely Thornhill, a course that’s a mixture of parkland

and heathland offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Portpatrick’s tricky Dunskey course nestles in the seaside heath overlooking the North Channel to Ireland, while Solway Links near Dalbeattie prides itself on being a family-friendly venue. Colvend bills itself as ‘Scotland’s friendliest club’ while Langholm is a beautiful 9-hole course. Some courses taking part in the Gateway to Golf scheme – such as Southerness and Powfoot – require small supplements to be paid but really the only difficulty with the Gateway to Golf Pass is deciding where to start. Such are the golfing riches of Dumfries & Galloway. To book your Gateway to Golf Pass call 01387 245566. 01 A 9-hole gem, New Galloway Golf Course. 02 The 13th green on Dunskey Golf Course.

Did you know? If golf with a twist is what you’re after visit Solway Links and play GolfCross, a fusion of golf and rugby. Played over a course just like golf, using the same clubs and basic rules, there are two key differences. The first is the ball, which is a regular ball but in the shape of a rugby ball. The second is that golf’s regular round hole is replaced with a rectangular goal suspended in mid-air to trap a flying ball.

Away from the fairways Should you manage to drag yourself away from the golf courses of Dumfries & Galloway you’ll find this fascinating part of Scotland hosts many other fine attractions. The region has a rich and intriguing history and there is certainly no shortage of castles in Dumfries & Galloway. Caerlaverock Castle is surely one of Scotland’s finest castles. The scene of various famous sieges, it is a true medieval fortress circled by a magnificent moat. Drumlanrig Castle is famed not only for its magical pink facade but also an impressive art collection and splendid Victorian Gardens. The lovely landscaped gardens at Castle Kennedy are also worth exploring while Threave Castle is a hugely impressive 14th century tower on an island in the River Dee. Besides all these castles, pay a visit to Sweetheart Abbey, near Dumfries, a graceful ruin with a romantic history. Dumfries & Galloway offers many excellent sporting activities other than golf. The region has become known for its world-class mountain biking, thanks to the 7stanes, a series of mountain biking centres spanning southern Scotland. Jump on a bike and take to the trails at Glentrool, Kirroughtree, Dalbeattie, Ae and Mabie. Or go

for a cycle along some of the region’s quiet country roads, all the while admiring the scenery. Fish the River Nith, one of Scotland’s great salmon rivers, or try windsurfing or kayaking at the Galloway Activity Centre at Loch Ken. Climb the Merrick, the highest peak in southern Scotland, or walk some of the Southern Upland Way which starts in Dumfries & Galloway. Moffat is Scotland’s first Walkers are Welcome town and even has its own walking festival. Not only is Galloway Forest Park the largest forest park in Britain, it also happens to be one of the best spots in the country for stargazing, thanks to the clarity of the night sky. The park is the UK’s only Dark Sky Park and one of only four in the western world. Look out too for some wonderful wildlife in the region. Follow the Red Kite Trail and keep a look out for these magnificent birds of prey. Or head to Caerlaverock National Nature Reserve, a vast expanse of mudflats and salt marshes that plays host to thousands of wildfowl and waders. At the Mull of Galloway, Scotland’s most southerly point, you can look out for seabirds including puffins.

02

Explore some of Dumfries & Galloway’s picturesque towns, places like Kirkcudbright, a seaside delight that has been attracting artists for generations and is bustling with studios and galleries. Wigtown has a selection of wonderful bookshops and stages the popular Wigtown Book Festival every autumn. Little wonder it is Scotland’s National Book Town. Don’t forget to spend some time in Dumfries which has strong associations with Robert Burns. The town and its environs inspired Scotland’s national poet to produce some of his best known works, including Auld Lang Syne and Tam O’ Shanter. Learn about Burns’ love of Dumfries at the award-winning Robert Burns Centre. You can even visit his favourite pub in town. Dumfries & Galloway is fortunate to have so many outstanding local food producers and good restaurants showcasing the region’s rich seasonal larder. Look out for Buccleuch beef, Galloway lamb, Solway scallops and smoked salmon from the Galloway Smokehouse. Try the delicious ice cream from Cream o’ Galloway too.

03

And if you long for a dram at the end of a day’s golfing and exploring, then Bladnoch, Scotland’s most southerly distillery, can be found nestled on the banks of the River Bladnoch. It might be difficult to see past the golf, but do that and your curiosity will be amply rewarded.

01 The medieval stronghold of Caerlaverock Castle. 02 Walking above Loch Trool, Galloway Forest Park. 03 Logan Botanic Garden, Port Logan.
