Golf in its purest form Golf was born on Scotland’s east coast. The game has been played in Aberdeen City and Shire in some shape or form for several centuries. The landscape of the north east is ideal golfing terrain and was long ago harnessed to create some of the finest golf holes imaginable. In Aberdeen City and Shire you can experience golf in its purest form, and you will find it both heartening and stimulating.

Whether you test yourself on a venerable links course or a lush parkland layout, Aberdeen City and Shire has a truly exceptional golf offering. More than 50 courses grace the region, with at least 30 of them lying within 20 miles of Aberdeen city. Royal Aberdeen on the outskirts of the city is the sixth oldest golf club in the world and a round on its sublime Balgownie Links really is something to cherish. The outward nine is renowned as one of the finest stretches of links golf on the planet and the closing holes are magnificent too, ensuring your time at Royal Aberdeen lives long in the memory. Just last year this illustrious venue played host to the Walker Cup, golf’s leading amateur tournament, and in 2005 the Senior British Open was staged at Royal Aberdeen. Aberdeen City and Shire is where sand, sea and links combine to perfection. Next door to Royal Aberdeen is the highly regarded Murcar Links which crops up regularly in magazine polls of the UK’s top golf courses. Murcar is a links course in the finest tradition, inviting you to take on those

daunting dunes and negotiate the numerous humps and hollows on the fairways. The sea is visible from almost every hole on a course that is uncompromising, mesmerising and tremendous fun. Further up the north east coast you’ll find Cruden Bay, another epic links course that gives you all you could possibly want in terms of challenge and beauty. At Cruden Bay you will encounter every kind of golf shot imaginable and the views from some of the tees are simply breathtaking. Head to Fraserburgh on the north eastern tip and you will be amply rewarded for your efforts. Founded in 1777, Fraserburgh can lay claim to being the seventh oldest golf club in the world. It’s another genuine slice of golfing history and once more you’ll find yourself in links heaven. For sheer drama it’s hard to beat the cliff-top course at Stonehaven, south of Aberdeen. The sea views are astounding and some of the tee shots are nerve-racking to say the least. Try to keep your nerve as you attempt another daunting drive on a course that scores high for drama.

Aberdeen City and Shire is rightly praised for its links courses but there are some great inland venues too, especially in beautiful Royal Deeside. Banchory is a delightful parkland course that serves up a terrific finish, while Ballater is a short but challenging heathland course in a stunning location. Braemar, at more than 1,000 ft above sea level, is the highest 18-hole golf course in Britain. Aberdeen itself has several praiseworthy courses besides Royal Aberdeen. Hazlehead No.1 is a terrific parkland course that was designed by Alistair MacKenzie, the man who created Augusta National. It is also a municipal course, making a round here very good value. Other popular municipal courses include the historic King’s Links and Balnagask, a course set spectacularly on headland overlooking the harbour. You could have an immensely satisfying golf break without leaving the city but with the likes of Cruden Bay, Murcar Links and Ballater beckoning, you will want to strike out and play as many of these courses as you can.

Aberdeen City and Shire has an enviable golfing history and the game continues to thrive in this stunning corner of Scotland. The future looks bright too with sustained investment in the game and some exciting new course projects coming to fruition. While building on its renowned golfing history, Aberdeen City and Shire is looking to ensure that visiting golfers experience one of the best golf offerings you’ll find anywhere in the world. 04
Just 12 miles north of Aberdeen, something intriguing has been taking shape. Donald Trump has spent the past few years building his first Scottish golf course, having purchased the Menie Estate, an impressive wilderness featuring an epic dune system, in 2005. The billionaire property developer had been searching for the right stretch of links for years before he settled on this epic piece of Aberdeenshire coastline. Having set eyes on the vast dunes, Trump deigned it the perfect site for Trump International Golf Links, a £1 billion development that will include a second course, a luxury hotel and a range of holiday homes. Trump’s stated ambition is for his Scottish project to result in the best golf course in the world. A few other excellent golf courses have cropped up in recent years, showing that the region does not rest on its laurels and rely on old favourites, wonderful though they are. Newmachar has two courses to be proud of. The Hawkshill championship course was designed by

Dave Thomas and is set among mature silver birch and Scots pine trees. Water hazards and strategically placed bunkers combine to make this one of the toughest golfing tests in the region. The course has staged a number of leading tournaments, including the Scottish Seniors Open. The Swailend course was also designed by Thomas and, though more forgiving than its sister course, should not be underestimated. Both courses are worthy of your attention. Another great asset to the region is the Aspire Golf Centre in Aberdeen. Opened a few years ago, Aspire was recently upgraded and now offers some of the finest practice facilities in the country. The centre attracts tens of thousands of visitors each year, with golfers of all ages and abilities flocking to this stateof-the-art facility to practice and hone their game. Aspire boasts a challenging 9-hole par 3 course and a driving range, plus there is the opportunity to take lessons from the centre’s experts, with various training packages available. Leisurely golf in the region Aberdeen City and Shire delivers a truly great golfing experience and the region is the perfect destination for a few relaxing rounds of golf. Highly recommended is Hazlehead in Aberdeen. Hazlehead’s No.1 course gets a lot of attention and rightly so, but the less heralded No.2 course is also worth exploring. It has a more open aspect in terms of layout and is less lengthy than its sister course. Hazlehead also has a lovely 9-hole course that offers a fun hour or two of golfing. Away from the city, Inverurie and Kemnay are two appealing parkland courses close to one another. Alford is also a lovely parkland layout surrounded by various hills including the much-loved Bennachie. Peterculter is an exceptional inland venue next to the River Dee, while Turiff is a fairly flat challenge with a fine setting on the banks of the River Deveron. North of Aberdeen city, Peterhead is a smashing links venue that features both an 18-hole and a 9-hole course. And up by the Banffshire coast you can have the pleasure of tackling Duff House Royal, a well-manicured parkland course by the River Deveron, and Royal Tarlair, a memorable cliff-top course with spectacular views of the Moray Firth. The scenery around Royal Deeside is fantastic and the area has a great selection of golf courses.

Banchory has an idyllic setting by the River Dee and is an obvious choice for a relaxing round. Aboyne is another attractive option in Royal Deeside. Again you’ll be spoiled by the views – this time of the Dee Valley – especially from the higher holes on the back nine. The course is a mix of rolling parkland and elevated heathland. Mature trees and water come into play on many of the holes with the Loch of Aboyne adding to the charm of the course. Ballater is one of the flattest courses in Royal Deeside but there is no compromise on beauty and the course still throws up a nice challenge. The surrounding hills frame the course perfectly and Ballater is the epitome of the player-friendly venue. Further into Royal Deeside, Braemar is a surprisingly flat course given that it is Britain’s highest 18-hole golf course. Set in a gorgeous valley, this relatively short layout offers up some brilliant holes and the journey is definitely worth it. Royal Deeside also has some fantastic 9-hole courses for filling a morning or afternoon. Tarland is perhaps one of the most scenic 9-hole courses in the region and features several memorable holes.

You will get a lot of pleasure from playing this short but tricky little course. Lumphanan can easily be classed as a hidden gem and is an example of village golf at its best. It’s a classic hillside course with the designers taking full advantage of the landscape. Lumphanan is a very informal and friendly place to play golf. Torphins is another one that’s worth a couple of hours of your time. This course is unique in that as well as being able to play nine holes you can play 13 holes, playing to 10 greens from 13 different tees! You’ll have to go and try it out for yourself. Aberdeen City and Shire offers all you could possibly want from a golf break.

Travel tips With a busy airport, excellent rail and road links and a major ferry terminal, Aberdeen City and Shire is very accessible. You’ll be in the north east of Scotland in no time, enjoying some of the country’s best golf courses. By road The main route from the south to Aberdeen is the A90 and there is also the A92 Coastal Route (from Dundee) and the A93 Deeside Tourist Route (from Perth) should you have more time to enjoy the local scenery. The main road between Inverness and Aberdeen is the A96. By rail Scotrail and East Coast run regular daily trains to Aberdeen from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness. You can also reach Aberdeen by rail from London. Board the Caledonian Sleeper in London and wake up in Aberdeen. By ferry Aberdeen harbour is one of the most modern ports in Europe and is right in the heart of the city. Northlink runs regular ferries to Aberdeen from Shetland and Orkney. Away from the fairways Aberdeen City and Shire has many marvellous attractions besides those classic golf courses. For example, the region has more castles per acre than anywhere else in the UK. With around 300 castles, Aberdeen City and Shire is rightly regarded as Scotland’s ‘Castle Country’. One of Scotland’s most iconic castles can be found just south of Aberdeen. Dunnottar Castle is a dramatic cliff-top fortress near Stonehaven, the castle seeming to rise from the sea. And there are countless other striking castles worth exploring. Slains Castle near Cruden Bay is believed to have been an inspiration for Dracula (Bram Stoker holidayed regularly in the town) while Crathes Castle close to Banchory is reputed to be haunted. A splendid example of a Scottish baronial fortress is Fyvie Castle where you can see the stunning art collection and wander the beautiful walled gardens. Castle Fraser’s popular Woodland Secrets play area is great fun for children. Both Fyvie Castle and Castle Fraser feature on Scotland’s only Castle Trail, which you can follow at your leisure.

Another trail you can take is the Victorian Heritage Trail. Queen Victoria loved Royal Deeside and indeed Balmoral Castle was built for her. The castle remains the Royal Family’s official Scottish residence and some of the shops in nearby Ballater bear the Royal Warrant as suppliers to the Queen. Much of Royal Deeside lies within the boundaries of the Cairngorms National Park and the further inland you go the more majestic the scenery becomes, with rugged mountains and ancient forests. Look out for golden eagles, ospreys and other remarkable wildlife while you’re in this area of true wilderness. Aberdeen City and Shire’s magnificent coastline provides the setting for all those classic links courses but you can also set your clubs aside and walk some of the Coastal Trail. Discover stunning beaches, pretty coves and charming fishing villages with historic harbours. You could go hillwalking in the much loved Bennachie range west of Aberdeen, or fish for salmon and trout in the River Dee and River Don. Try canoeing or kayaking in the region’s rivers, or, for

even bigger thrills, head to Fraserburgh for a spot of surfing. Back in the city, Aberdeen Snowsports Centre offers snowboarding and skiing. There’s much to explore in Aberdeen and the Granite City has some stunning architecture. Walk the cobbled streets of Old Aberdeen and explore King’s College, part of one of Scotland’s oldest universities. Take a stroll around the quaint fishing village of Footdee next to Aberdeen’s harbour or visit one of the city’s splendid parks. Duthie Park’s highlight is its Winter Gardens, while Hazlehead Park is worth visiting for its beautiful rose gardens. Enjoy a night of opera or ballet at His Majesty’s Theatre or visit Aberdeen Art Gallery during the daytime. Pay a visit to the Gordon Highlanders Museum and learn about one of the British Army’s most famous regiments. At Aberdeen Maritime Museum you can gain a good insight to the fishing and oil industries which have been so vital for this city. Aberdeen has some excellent shopping opportunities and the latest addition to the city’s strong retail
offering is glitzy Union Square with its impressive range of boutiques and restaurants. The Bon Accord is another excellent centre offering great fashion stores in the heart of the city while the West End boasts a variety of unique outlets and designer shops. If you’re a fan of whisky, head out to Glen Garioch Distillery in Oldmeldrum where they have been producing single malts for more than 200 years. South of Aberdeen you’ll find Fettercairn Distillery, one of Scotland’s oldest licensed distilleries. Both Glen Garioch and Fettercairn offer guided tours and the opportunity of a dram.
