Scotland’s natural larder Lush farmland nurtures a range of wonderful produce, fresh fish comes from the fast flowing rivers and nearby sea, while quality lamb, venison and beef are all available in Aberdeen City and Shire. It is no surprise that this region is regarded as Scotland’s natural larder and you can sample the delightful variety at restaurants and cafés or simply visit a farmers’ market. Between spring and late autumn, salmon fishing in the rivers is plentiful and quality smokehouses use this and trout to produce unique and distinctive flavours. Much of what is brought ashore ends up on the menus at restaurants the very same day. Some of the finest seafood in the world is caught off the east coast and Peterhead is the UK’s leading white fish port where the catch is landed most of the year. Indulge in lobster, crab, lemon sole and mackerel or enjoy the milder taste of cod.

You can find another well-known brand – Mackie’s of Scotland – in Aberdeen City and Shire. Luxury ice cream is made using milk and cream from the cows on the dairy farm.

Aberdeen Angus beef is well worth seeking out, offering a delicious flavour and texture renowned throughout the world, while the rowie is a local delicacy. Those with a sweet tooth can enjoy shortbread, a fine accompaniment to a cup of tea, produced locally by Dean’s of Huntly.

There is nothing quite like a dram of whisky to wash down a hearty meal. Why not tour historic distilleries to really get a taste of the region? Royal Lochnagar is located beside Balmoral Castle and was awarded its Royal prefix following a visit and tasting by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Here the malt is fruity with hints of pine. Scotland’s Star Quality!

- A simple, impartial, consistent approach to quality

VisitScotland, under the Scottish Tourist Board brand, runs the star grading schemes which assess the quality standards of all types of accommodation and visitor attractions from castles and historic houses to garden centres and arts venues. We quality assure over 70 percent of the accommodation in Scotland and 90 percent of the visitor attractions – so wherever you want to stay or visit, we’ve got it covered. Each establishment is reviewed once a year. We do the hard work so you can relax and enjoy your holiday. How does the system work?

Graded visitor attractions

A consistent standard wherever you stay

Visitor attractions from tourist shops and museums to leisure centres and tours are graded with 1 - 5 stars depending on their level of customer care. The focus is on the standard of hospitality and service as well as presentation, quality of shop or cafĂŠ (if there is one) and toilet facilities.

The promise of the stars:

Â?

it is clean, tidy and an acceptable standard

Â?Â? Â?Â?Â?

it is a good, all round standard

Â?Â?Â?Â?

it is excellent – furnished using high quality materials, superb food where provided and friendly, professional service

it is a very good standard, with attention to detail in every area

Our advisors visit and assess establishments on up to 50 areas from quality, comfort and cleanliness to welcome, ambience and service. The same star scheme runs in England and Wales, so you can follow the stars wherever you go.

Â?Â?Â?Â?Â? an exceptional standard where

It should be noted that those establishments that fail to meet our minimum standards will not be awarded a star rating.

Establishments awarded gold stars have consistently achieved the highest levels of excellence within their star grading.

presentation, ambience, food where provided and service are hard to fault

We grade all types of accommodation from hostels, through to B&Bs and self catering properties to hotels grand and small. We even grade campus accommodation and parks offering holiday homes and camping. So whether you prefer to spend the night under canvas or the canopy of a four-poster bed, we’ll make sure you know the standard to expect.

New Holiday Parks scheme

VisitScotland has developed Welcome Schemes to complement the Star Quality Assurance grades. These schemes tell you about establishments which pay particular attention to the specific needs of these visitors. As well as the established Walkers Welcome ' and Cyclists Welcome & schemes, there are similar schemes for: Anglers

Bikers

This year VisitScotland introduces our new Holiday Parks Quality Assurance scheme. The star awards now better reflect the aspects which impact on your enjoyment of your Scottish park holiday, the things that you told us are important to you. This has resulted in changes to the level of awards given to some parks but you can still be assured of the same high level of customer service and all the facilities you’ve become accustomed to.

Accepting accommodation by telephone or in writing means you have entered into a legally binding contract with the proprietor of the establishment. If you cancel or fail to take up that accommodation, for whatever reason, the proprietor generally has the right to ask for compensation. You should always check the cancellation terms in advance and, if you must cancel a booking, advise the management immediately.

The majority of Scotland’s indoor public places, including pubs, restaurants and cafés are smoke-free by law, creating a healthier and fresher environment for residents and visitors to our beautiful country. Hotels, B&Bs and Guest Houses are also smoke-free but can designate bedrooms where guests can smoke, if they wish to do so. To check the availability of such bedrooms, please check with the establishment directly when booking. For further information, visit www.clearingtheairscotland.com.

Each entry has a map reference relating to the maps which appear on pages 56 and 57 of this guide. Where establishments are listed as ‘By’ a city, town or village it is wise to check the exact location with the operator before making your journey.

The prices of accommodation, services, and facilities stated in this guide are based on information received from the relevant advertisers. Greg or Maureen Manning Snipie's Bothy was converted from the original farmhouse at Snipefield in the early 1990s to a modern standard of construction and insulation, making it ideal for all-year-round use. Many features have been included to create a traditional homely atmosphere including a wood-burning stove. The Bothy, surrounded by farm and woodlands, has open views to Bennachie. Access is by a private tarmac road. Being close to the A96 allows easy access to tourist attractions and activities to suit all tastes. Fifteen percent discount for couples.

VisitScotland introduces our new Holiday Parks Quality Assurance Scheme

D

You told us you wanted our star awards to better reflect the aspects which impact on your enjoyment of your Scottish park holiday, so we listened and now focus on the things that you told us are important to you. This has resulted in changes to the level of awards given to some parks but you can still be assured of the same high level of customer service and all the facilities you’ve become accustomed to from Scottish Holiday Parks.
