SENIORS We asked six GlenOak graduating seniors about their plans after graduation. Get a glimpse of what’s next for Cora Bankert, Owen Ferreri, Laila Johnson, Quincy Mazeke, Khushi Patel, and Ricky Williams as they take the next step in their journeys.

CORA BANKERT

OWEN FERRERI

“I’m attending Ohio University and plan to major in psychology and minor in political science. My time at GlenOak has helped me SOAR for my future in many ways. My involvement in the marching band and the Light & Sound Technologies career tech program have had the biggest impact on me. I have been involved in both of these programs over half of my high school career, and both of them have helped me to become confident in my abilities and understand my worth. The things that these two have in common are that we get to express ourselves to the audience; whether it’s through music, or through the lighting and sounds of the stage. Through these programs I have been able to work with a variety of different people, and have had to collaborate with them to make something big. The marching band and Light & Sound career tech have helped me build critical thinking and collaboration skills that ultimately have helped me grow into a better, stronger, and more confident person.”

“I plan on attending the University of Akron to pursue a degree in aerospace engineering. I am truly so thankful I was able to attend GlenOak. I feel like I have had an amazing school experience that has taught me so much on what feels like such a short time. My schooling has taught me all of the necessary curriculum I needed but it has also taught me the importance of hard work and dedication, something that I feel will serve me very well in my future. Attending GlenOak, I have been so lucky to make so many important connections, friends that have been there for me, teachers and staff who have pushed for me to succeed, administration that never missed a match or an art show alike, and ultimately a school that will help me soar into the next phase of my life.”

4 EAGLE NATION MAGAZINE

LAILA JOHNSON

KHUSHI PATEL

“Going to The University of Kentucky studying child development and family studies. After four years at GlenOak I’ve truly discovered not only myself but my passions and gifts in this world. Being a large part of the Commercial Photography Career Tech program for the past four years has definitely shaped me into who I am today. Mrs. Mathis-Bertosa has extended her classroom to me as a second home and I will forever be grateful for that. The endless opportunities I’ve received from not only this program but the school itself will forever amaze me. I wouldn’t have discovered my full self in a high school aspect if it wasn’t for the teachers who I’ve realized care a lot about us as students but also the principals who go out of their way to cheer me on and express their care for each individual student. The staff at GlenOak truly are the heart of the school and have an imprint on each student’s life probably more than they realize.”

“I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at Point Park University. I will be playing lacrosse at the NCAA Division II level and will major in accounting. After graduation I will have my cosmetology license which will help me open up my own business some day in the future! My time at GlenOak helped me SOAR for my future because I was presented with a multitude of opportunities to choose from, and was able to take advantage of them which helped me get to where I am today. The career tech program at GlenOak really helped shape my future. Being a part of the cosmetology program helped me get the education I wanted early on, saved me thousands of dollars, and gave me a chance at getting my cosmetology license! That is just a small example of one of the opportunities at GlenOak that I took advantage of that helped me SOAR.”

QUINCY MAZEKE

RICKY WILLIAMS

“I plan to pursue a career in exercise science and play baseball at the University of Cincinnati. I hope to either become a sports medicine physician, a strength and conditioning coach at a university or get drafted into the MLB and continue to play baseball. I think my time at GlenOak has greatly impacted my life in a positive way. Whether it be the IB and AP courses, or the career tech opportunities that help give students an outlet to pursue a passion they’ve always had. But I think what separates us from the rest is the diversity of the student body and the different people you come into contact with every day that help expose you to all walks of life. I wouldn’t want to have spent the last 12 years of my life anywhere else except Plain Local Schools.”

“After graduation I plan to start my landscaping business and apply for Canton and Plain Township Fire Department. My time at GlenOak helped me SOAR by having such great CCP and Career Tech classes.”

In April, the Plain Local Schools Foundation & Alumni Association proudly awarded $27,950 in scholarships to graduating seniors from the GlenOak High School Class of 2025. These scholarships, made possible through generous donors and alumni, support a wide range of student aspirations from college and career training to service and leadership. Each award reflects the values and legacy of the individuals and organizations that fund them, many of whom are former Plain Local students committed to giving back. We are incredibly proud to support these Golden Eagles as they take their next steps beyond graduation. Please join us in celebrating the recipients of the following individual scholarships presented by the Plain Local Schools Foundation & Alumni Association: THE ABBEY E FOLTZ MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: Abbey Foltz, a 1999 GlenOak graduate, lost her courageous battle to cancer in August 2000. Although frequently hospitalized and on treatments during her high school career, Abbey overcame insurmountable obstacles and worked hard to achieve her academic and personal goals. She had the courage, drive and perseverance to finish high school and subsequently attend The Ohio State University. It was obvious to anyone who caught her sparkling performances in May Shows, musicals and concerts that the performing arts were especially important to Abbey. Abbey’s parents and family, all of whom were also Plain Local graduates, have established this scholarship for GlenOak students to commemorate Abbey’s love for music and to honor her memory. This $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Nevaeh Allman. THE BILL MEASE SCHOLARSHIP: Dedicated to a former Plain Local Superintendent and educator, the Bill Mease Memorial Scholarship honors the man who strived to improve the educational opportunities of thousands of children in this community. Bill was the inspiration and driving force behind the concept of a community high school campus among other educational programs that laid the framework making Plain Local an excellent place to learn. This $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Sofia Ondrus. 10 EAGLE NATION MAGAZINE

THE BROCATHLETE SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship is established by a group of GlenOak High School 2016 graduates who feel strongly about giving back to current Plain Local students in pursuit of higher education. During a track meet in 2016, the idea for a 10-event competition was devised. The annual event boasts 10 different activities to decide which would earn the title for the year. The “Brocathlon” name is derived from the track event the ‘Decathlon’ in tribute to the final sport in which all would compete. This group of athletes grew up in the Plain Local Schools participating in swim, track and field, cross country, basketball, baseball, soccer and football with most of the group having done multiple of these sports while in high school. Additionally, this group could also be found all over the social, academic and work spectrum. What they had in common was a love of athletics, competition, dedication and pride in their school. Being the “Ultimate Brocathlete” means chasing greatness in all aspects of life – socially, academically, and athletically. This $500 scholarship was awarded to Dylan Wiles. THE BUSER FAMILY FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP: Michael Buser, CEO and founder of Teleradiology Consultants and Jacqueline DiNapoli-Buser established a family foundation to deepen their philanthropy in Northeast Ohio and beyond. Their family foundation will focus on the needs of children and the values of respect, kindness and giving. This $2,000 scholarship was awarded to Sydney Harbour. THE DELANEY GRACE RILEY BLACK SHEEP DISC GOLF SCHOLARSHIPS: Delaney Grace Riley, a Glenwood student in 2015, was walking to school on a beautiful September morning shortly into the new school year when she suddenly and without warning succumbed to an undiagnosed heart condition and passed away. Laney was taken from all of us far too soon at 10 years old but her exuberant spirit for the love for others, giving back to the community and thirst for knowledge is something that should never escape any of us. This scholarship was established by Laney’s family, friends and our Plain Local community to honor her love for life. Delaney was active in Girls on the Run, Girl Scouts of America, First Friends volleyball. This scholarship is to award a graduating GlenOak senior who plans to pursue a postsecondary education at any level. Scholarship winners of $2,000 each were awarded to Genevieve Isaason, Greta Burchfield and Adrianna White. An additional $3,000 scholarship was awarded to Kylee Pudder.

THE DRENTA FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP: Drenta Family Scholarship was established to award GlenOak High School graduating seniors who are the child, or grandchild, of any member of the Plain Local Schools Alumni Association. The scholarship honors Vic and Darlene Drenta, who are both alumni and career educators of the Plain Local School District. This $500 scholarship was awarded to Anna McClure. THE EVANS/YOHE FAMILY ASL SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship was established by Denise (Yohe) Evans, Cutler Realtor and GO ’82 alumni in honor of her brother, Rick Yohe, who lost his hearing at age 2, and Rick’s family who are very involved in the deaf community. This $500 scholarship was awarded to Amelia Colon. THE EVANS FAMILY VIDEO PRODUCTION SCHOLARSHIPS: This scholarship was established by Denise (Yohe) Evans, Cutler Realtor and GO ’82 alumni in honor of her son Brad, and her nephew Zane, who both were students of the GlenOak Video Production program. These $500 scholarship recipients are Josephine Kotuce and Larson Sutula. THE FLORENCE ELIZABETH BARR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship is in memory of Florence Barr. She was not only an outstanding female athlete, but also a revered educator in the Plain Local School District. This $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Kylee Pudder. THE GLENOAK SOCCER BOOSTER CLUB SCHOLARSHIPS: This scholarship is established by the GlenOak Soccer Booster Club. The goal is to provide a scholarship to two deserving GlenOak High School seniors (one boy and one girl) on a GlenOak soccer team. Each scholarship winner received $250 and was awarded to Alivia Foster and Drew Haymaker. THE HAWS LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship was established by Plain Township Trustee Scott Haws upon his election to office on his promise to give back to the community. This $500 scholarship was awarded to Kamdyn Hershberger. THE JIM HILLIBISH JOURNALISM SCHOLARSHIP: This scholarship was established in memory of Jim Hillibish, who worked for The Canton Repository for parts of five decades, writing stories, feature and entertainment articles, editorials, and general interest commentaries, as well as columns on gardening, cooking, and computers. He held various positions at The Canton Repository, such as photographer, reporter, columnist, entertainment writer, features editor, bureau chief, lifestyle section editor, editorial writer and editorial board member. He also helped to create the newspaper’s entertainment section, and, in 1996, designed and launched CantonRep.com. At Glenwood High School, he studied journalism and became the editor-in-chief of the school newspaper, The Eagle’s View, his senior year. This $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Mirren Grimason.

THE JON R GHEEN SCHOLARSHIP: Jon grew up in Plain Township and loved his high school years playing basketball at Glenwood High School. In addition, he and Barb met at Glenwood, married in 1965, and lived in Plain Township until 2006. Both of their children graduated from GlenOak. At age 15, Jon began working in the family business, VeeGee Enterprise Corporation, and he eventually became president of the company. This $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Alexander Click. THE MATTHEW FOX SCHOLARSHIP: Matthew, a 1995 GlenOak High School graduate, died tragically on September 5, 1995 in an automobile accident. This scholarship was established by Matthew Fox’s parents, family and many friends to honor his memory and love of music. Matthew was an active member of the GlenOak Music Program for four years and his passions included writing, performing and teaching music professionally. This $500 scholarship was awarded to Charles Shaffer. THE PAULA PERTICARINI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP: Paula Marie Perticarini was a dedicated family member, mom and professional Canton City School District teacher who raised her family in the Plain Local School District. She lost her life to pancreatic cancer in 2023. According to her closest coworkers, Paula had a great outlook and sense of humor with all of her students. She valued developing a relationship with them and cared deeply about their academic needs and success. She was patient, sweet and above all else, kind. As a teacher, Paula was an advocate of all of her diverse students, As a mom, she was the biggest supporter of her two girls and the roles they both played in clubs and activities while attending GlenOak High School. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, decorating, crafting and baking. Above all else, she loved her family. This $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Gianna Papaleo. THE PETER N CAZANTZES SCHOLARSHIP: An educator for more than 30 years in Plain Local, Pete Cazantzes dedicated his life to improving the lives of those around him. He demanded the most out of his students and gave selflessly of himself to his community. This $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Peyton Teter. THE ROGER AND CHERYL MCCLURE LEGACY SCHOLARSHIP: Roger & Cheryl (Davis) McClure began their 30-year teaching careers with Plain Local Schools at the former Plain Center Elementary, both in grade 6; Cheryl in September of 1971, and Roger in January of 1972. They were married in June of 1972. They both retired in 2002; Cheryl from Avondale Elementary and continued on next page > EAGLE NATION MAGAZINE 11

Roger from Taft Middle School. The family has proudly attended Plain for three generations; Cheryl was a 1967 graduate of Glenwood, their daughters, Laurel & Lindsay, are GlenOak grads, in 1995 & 1999, respectively, and two of their granddaughters are current Plain Local students. She was a very active student, majoring in biology, French and playing on the women’s soccer team. In high school, she was the president of the National Honor Society, a student ambassador, a varsity soccer player, and dedicated over 900 hours to community service. Outside of her studies, she was gifted in artistic endeavors including choir, creating realistic drawings, and self-taught musical instrument talents. Sydney’s greatest talent, though, was touching the lives and bringing pure joy to everyone she met. Her time with us was very short, but the impacts she had on us, others, and the community will last a lifetime. This $1,000 scholarship was awarded to Chloe Garner.

THE TYDIN MILLER SCHOLARSHIP: Tydin Miller, a 2005 graduate of GlenOak High School, embraced the many challenges she faced. With the help of her family, friends, teachers and coaches, Ty became a persevering kid full of hope and happiness. She always had a smile on her face and was genuinely kind to everyone she met. 2025 SENIOR Walk

One of our most meaningful traditions, the Senior Walk, took place on May 15, 2025. Dressed in caps and gowns, the GlenOak Class of 2025 made their way through the halls of their former elementary, intermediate, and middle schools…returning to where their journey began. Each stop was filled with energy and emotion. Little Eagles lined the hallways with handmade signs, high-fives, and cheers, while former teachers shared hugs and memories. Seniors posed for photos at each elementary school, capturing a moment that celebrates both how far they’ve come and what’s still ahead. This walk honors the past while inspiring the future. For the students watching, it’s a glimpse of what’s possible. For the seniors, it’s a reminder that they are—and always will be—Golden Eagles.

SUMMER COLORING CONTEST We’re excited to bring a creative opportunity to our community this summer with the 2025 Plain Local Summer Coloring Contest! This year, we’ve turned one of our favorite moments from the 2024-2025 school year into a fun coloring page— featuring Ernie the Eagle at a GlenOak football game. How to Enter: • Use the provided coloring page OR • Download the coloring page from our website • Color it however you like! Be creative, have fun, and let your imagination run wild. • Submit your entry by June 30 by emailing a clear photograph of your finished piece to communications@plainlocal.org. • In your email, please include: o Your full name and age (Parents, include your child’s name and age if they were the artist) o Please send submissions separately. o The subject line of your email should be: “Your First Name Last Name – Coloring Contest.”

Age Categories: We have separate categories for all ages, and we will choose one winner per age group! Winners will be announced in July, and their photos will be featured on our social media channels. The age categories are: • Preschool (3-5 years)

• Middle School (12-14 years)

• Early Elementary (6-8 years)

• High School (15-18 years)

• Upper Elementary (9-11 years)
