A Message from The Plain Local Schools Foundation & Alumni Association The Plain Local Schools Foundation & Alumni Association was established to enhance educational experiences by serving as a conduit for special private gifts and funds on behalf of Plain Local Schools. Over the years, the Foundation has successfully provided scholarships, Star Grants for educators, and funding for collaborative projects. It strives to be an asset to our community, continually elevating our educators’ ability to create and innovate. In addition to raising funds for collaborative projects within the District, the Foundation focuses on partnering with families and businesses interested in creating endowed scholarships for graduating seniors. The graduating class of 2026 received several scholarships totaling $25,750. Our Star Grants are a wonderful asset to the District. Through fundraising efforts, we empower Plain Local educators to envision innovative and creative solutions in their classrooms. This year, we awarded over 25 Star Grants totaling $30,329.60 and celebrated their achievements with a reception at Gervasi Vineyard. The Foundation provides a unique opportunity for individuals, parents, alumni, and businesses to partner with our schools, enhancing the community experience in Plain Local. Your gifts to the Plain Local Schools Foundation & Alumni Association enable every Eagle to strive for their highest goals. If you’re interested in establishing an endowed scholarship fund, making a gift to benefit students, or learning more about our initiatives, please visit plainfoundation.com.

Mission and Vision Plain Local Schools Foundation & Alumni Association was established in 1989 to build and maintain a stewardship of community trust and to provide funding for superior, innovative, educational programs which exceed the financial resources of the Plain Local School District. Donated funds support Star Grants for teachers, scholarships for graduating seniors, and support Eagle pride, and other district initiatives and projects. Over the years, alumni and foundation supporters have contributed more than $1 million to the foundation to support these programs.

Hall of Distinction Inductees CORY AMATANGELO

Assistant Coach, Canton Astros Baseball Introduction by - Jim Hedrick Award Sponsor - Susan Bowling Cory, who has Asperger’s Syndrome, has been playing sports since he was 9 years old. He started his athletic journey by playing baseball for the Canton Challenger Baseball League, where he played for 16 seasons for the Canton Cardinals and the Canton Astros respectively. His favorite memories were when he got the opportunity to represent Canton Challenger Baseball to play an exhibition game at the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA in 2004, where he made several double plays in the game, winning MVP in 2005 for his effort of trying out for the GlenOak Freshman Baseball team and winning the Award of Merit in his final season of his baseball career in 2014. Upon his retirement after the 2014 season, he pursued his dream by being a baseball coach in 2015 and he’s currently an assistant baseball coach for the Canton Astros. In 2019, he was awarded the Lifetime Leadership Award for his dedication as a coach when he was a former player in the league. In high school, he was on the GlenOak Wrestling team for 4 years and the GlenOak Track team for 3 years. From his sophomore year to senior year in high school, he was on the GlenOak Football team as an equipment manager and he’s currently still involved with the football team since graduating from high school in 2008. He’s also currently involved with the GlenOak Basketball team as a team manager for the past 2 seasons. He started his Special Olympics sports career in 2006 by playing basketball for the Stark Public Royal Knights and he has been a key player in his entire basketball career with his skills and talent by leading his teams to 9 state tournament appearances and has helped win 2 state championships (2007 & 2024) and he’s currently still playing basketball for the Royal Knights. In 2007, he went out for the Stark Public track team during track season his junior year at GlenOak. He has accomplished a lot in his entire Special Olympics track career. He currently has 29 gold medals, 11 silver medals and 8 bronze medals when it comes to the state competition. His favorite memory so far is winning state in Pentathlon in 2023, which was something he wanted to do for a long time. He is currently still running track. In 2009, he started his softball career for the Stark Public Royal Knights and he has been a sensational softball player, which he’s a very good pitcher and plays about every position when needed. He has helped the Royal Knights reach the state tournament 14 times and has helped win 4 state championships (2009, 2015, 2022, 2024) and he’s currently still playing softball. His favorite memories will forever be when he got selected to play softball for Team Ohio in Princeton, NJ at the Special Olympics USA Games in 2014 and helped win the gold medal by defeating Team New Jersey and when his Royal Knights beat the 4 time reigning D1 State Champion and undefeated Darke County Diamond Dawgs in 2015 after years of coming up short in the state tournament when they played them every year. In 2022, he went out for flag football and since Stark Public doesn’t offer flag football, he played 1 season for the Tuscarawas County Rockets and helped them win the state championship that year before playing for Stark DD in 2023 and he’s currently playing flag football for Stark DD. He has been very influential to his teammates and he has started to become a leader for all of his teams. His teammates have looked up to him as a leader on his team and he always shows heart and determination whether it’s Award Sponsor on the field, on the track or on the court. Susan Bowling

Hall of Distinction Inductees JOEL DANIEL HARRIS

Executive Dreamer of TomTod Ideas Introduction by - Chad Sinkovich Award Sponsor - Personal Peak Consulting/Suzi Lantz Joel Daniel Harris is a proud graduate of GlenOak High School whose life work centers on a simple but radical premise: young people aren’t only our future; their perspective and ideas matter today. Demonstrating his belief in this principle, Joel has spent his entire career investing specifically in the critical developmental stage of early adolescence, including the last 14 years as the founder and Executive Dreamer of TomTod Ideas, empowering middle school students to explore, develop, and launch ideas that help their communities grow and thrive. Joel’s journey of community leadership began right in the hallways of Avondale, Pleasant View, and GlenOak, where dedicated educators (like Mrs. Wingeter, Mr. Converse, Mrs. DiStefano, Mr. Kamionka, Mrs. Stiffler, Miss Derr, and Mr. Ferrara, just to name a few), invested in growing the curiosity, imagination, and community-minded spirit that drives his work today. Under his leadership, TomTod has empowered over 15,000 middle schoolers to connect with local mentors, community leaders, and, most importantly, the power of their own voices. Joel is particularly proud that every 7th grader in Plain Local schools has had the opportunity to explore and invest in their community through TomTod programming over the past 6 years, including students launching an afterschool e-sports program for their peers, redesigning the outdoor courtyard space for Oakwood Middle School, and investing in community betterment projects including Women’s Stories for a Better Tomorrow and the Eldercare Project. A longtime community advocate, Joel’s commitment to community service extends beyond TomTod. A graduate of the 26th class of Leadership Stark County, he has continued to actively volunteer with the program over the last 14 years. He serves as a mayoral appointee on the Canton Planning Commission and is a member of the Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee. He is dedicated to working on systems-level advocacy in the youth development space, serving as a Tactical Team Lead for Youth Success Summit (an out-of-school-time (OST) collaborative in Summit County), and is a leadership team member for Youth Experiences Stark, a new OST collaborative in Stark County spearheaded by the Sisters of Charity Foundation of Canton. His dedication has earned him numerous accolades, including the Canton Professional Educators’ Association’s Layperson of the Year, the DeHoff Emerging Philanthropist Award, a 30 Faces of Leadership Stark County honoree, and the Stark County Prosecutor’s Office Horowitz Award for innovative youth programming. Joel holds a Bachelor’s from Malone University, a Master’s from George Fox University, and a Master’s in Education Leadership from Harvard University. Joel and his wife, Joy, live in Canton with their two daughters, Amelie and Everett, and Joy’s service dog, Pepper. They’re members of Christ Presbyterian Church in downtown Canton and regularly fall behind on house projects and grand landscaping ideas. Much to the chagrin of his oldest daughter, Joel is a dedicated purveyor of exquisite (in his own mind) dad jokes. He remains deeply grateful to Plain Local Schools for fostering a flight path that has allowed him to soar like a Golden Eagle.

Hall of Distinction Inductees Community Partner of the Year

STARK COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

Accepting on Behalf Sergeant Chad Smith Introduction by - Emily Weiss Award sponsor - Avondale HOA The Plain Local Schools Foundation & Alumni Association is proud to recognize the Stark County Sheriff ’s Office as the 2026 Plain Local Schools Foundation Community Partner of the Year. The relationship between Plain Local Schools and the Stark County Sheriff ’s Office reaches back more than two decades. What began with a single School Resource Officer serving the district has grown into a partnership that today places School Resource Officers throughout Plain Local Schools. Over the years, these officers have become familiar and trusted members of our school community. They help keep our schools safe, but their impact reaches well beyond security. They build relationships with students, work closely with staff and families, offer guidance, support school events, and become people our students know they can turn to. That relationship has always been at the heart of the partnership. This award recognizes not only the deputies serving Plain Local today, but the many members of the Stark County Sheriff ’s Office who have supported our students, staff and families over the years. The Plain Local Schools Foundation & Alumni Association is honored to recognize the Stark County Sheriff ’s Office for its longstanding service, partnership and commitment to the Plain Local community.

DELANEY GRACE RILEY

October 25, 2004 - September 15, 2015 Introduction by - Emily Palmer Accepting on behalf - Craig Riley, father Award Sponsor - Jennifer Dave For Judge Delaney Grace Riley was a bright, caring, and joyful young girl whose impact continues to be felt throughout her family, Plain Local Schools, and our surrounding communities. Known for her kind heart, infectious smile, and genuine concern for others, Delaney had a unique ability to make people feel welcome and valued. She approached life with curiosity, gratitude, and an enthusiasm that drew people to her. Whether spending time with family and friends, caring for animals, or simply enjoying the everyday adventures of childhood, Delaney embraced life with a spirit that left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Her natural kindness and compassion were evident from a young age, and she consistently demonstrated a willingness to put others before herself. On September 15, 2015, Delaney unexpectedly passed away due to an undiagnosed heart condition at the age of 10. While her loss was devastating to all who knew and loved her, her family was determined that her story would continue to inspire hope, service, and opportunity for others. In the years since, Delaney’s legacy has grown into something far greater than anyone could have imagined. Through the support of family, friends, sponsors, volunteers, and community members, scholarship programs established in her honor have awarded thousands of dollars to graduating students pursuing higher education and vocational opportunities. These scholarships recognize young people who demonstrate character, compassion, leadership, and a commitment to serving others—qualities that reflected the way Delaney lived her life. What began as a way to honor a beloved daughter and friend has become a lasting source of encouragement and opportunity for future generations. Each scholarship awarded represents another chapter in Delaney’s story and another life positively impacted by her legacy. Today, Delaney’s influence continues to be seen not only through the scholarships that bear her name, but also through the acts of kindness, generosity, and community service inspired by her memory. Her life serves as a reminder that even a brief time on earth can create a legacy that endures for years to come. Thank you for helping us honor Delaney Grace Riley and continue the work being done in her name. -Craig M. Riley, Delaney’s Dad

MERCEDES GARCIA WINTERS Owner of Trinity Ceramic Supply East, Inc Introduction by - Janice Johnson Ghorashi Award Sponsor - Elizabeth Winkler

As a proud 1973 graduate of Glenwood High School and 1976 graduate of Kent State University, I have been fortunate to enjoy a career and life centered on service, leadership, and community involvement. Along the way, I have been blessed with a wonderful family. My husband, Dennis, and I have shared many adventures together, and we are proud parents of two children Lauren (Eric) and Austin (Samantha) and grandparents to three grandchildren, who continue to be one of the greatest joys in our lives. My professional journey began in banking, where I spent nine years in the Trust Departments of Harter Bank and Society Bank in Canton, Ohio. I later served as Regional Regulatory Compliance and Security Officer for Bank One in Texas, training more than 7,000 employees and conducting audits across the country. While living in Marshall, Texas, I also served as Vice President of Festivals and was honored as the city’s Ambassador of the Year in 1992. After moving to Florence, Alabama, I taught Spanish at St. Joseph Regional Catholic School. In 1999, my husband, Dennis, and I became owners of Trinity Ceramic Supply East, Inc., a business we continue to operate today. While I have enjoyed a rewarding professional career, my greatest passion has always been serving others. Over the years, I have worked alongside numerous organizations, including the Lauderdale and Colbert County Animal Shelters, The ALS Foundation, The American Cancer Society, The Dyslexia Foundation, and The Salvation Army. I also helped establish an engineering scholarship at the University of North Alabama to support future generations of students. For more than two decades, I have been actively involved with The Salvation Army, serving in a variety of leadership roles and currently as a member of both the Advisory Board and Women’s Auxiliary. One of the projects closest to my heart is the Empty Bowls Luncheon, which now serves approximately 2,000 people annually. This year, the event surpassed an incredible milestone of more than $1 million raised to support those in need throughout our community. I am currently helping develop medical and day camp programs for underserved individuals in the Shoals area. In recognition of my volunteer service, I was honored with The Salvation Army’s Lifetime Achievement Award and was also named Shoals Woman of the Year in 2017. Although my career and volunteer work have taken me many places, I have never forgotten the values and sense of community that shaped me growing up in Canton. Those early lessons inspired a lifelong commitment to giving back, and I am deeply honored to be recognized by the community that helped make me who I am today. Award Sponsor Elizabeth Winkler

Hall of Distinction Inductees JIM WISE

Director of Golf - Jim Wise Golf Academy/Medina Country Club Introduced by - David Coleman Award Sponsor - David Coleman I am honored to be selected into the Plain Local Foundation Hall of Distinction. Although I was born in the Chicago area, my family moved to North Canton at a young age. We moved to a wonderful community and was greeted with lifelong friends right away. I became involved in sports, church and neighborhood activities. At age 13, I started playing golf. Golf became my passion. For several years, I’m sure I played golf at Meadowlake Golf Course every day during the summer. Little did I know how much golf would play a part in the rest of my life. During high school, I played on the GlenOak golf team. Coach Randy Young, Coach Ray Harding and the upperclassmen on my golf team became influencers in my life. I will forever remember the lessons that I learned from them. My high school golf career went from a freshman finding his game to the Captain of the Varsity team my senior year. We went to the state tournament my junior and senior year where we proudly finished in the top ten as a team and me individually. Bowling Green was my college choice. My focus was on academics, but I was able to make the reserve squad of the BG golf team. After graduating with an accounting and finance degree, I started working in the business world. I married a wonderful girl that I met at Bowling Green. I have been married to Theresa since 1985 and we have two wonderful children, Matt and Angela. Theresa encouraged me to pursue my golf dream. After years of encouragement, I quit my accounting job and earned a degree in golf management. I have been a Golf Professional for the last 35 years. I became the Head Golf Professional at Columbia Hills Country Club. After 17 years, I decided to focus on teaching. I wanted to help people improve their game and introduce the game to as many young people as possible. Golf gave me so much that I wanted to pay it back. I became a full-time instructor at Mallard Creek Golf Course. My clinics for adults and juniors really took off. Before I knew it, we were running the 7th largest junior program in the country. After all these years, I felt like I really found my purpose – introducing golf to children, helping them improve their golf game while developing a positive self-esteem. We started seeing results as our PGA Junior League team made it to the national finals five years in a row. Even more important is watching my students graduate high school and college as confident men and women. I am now the Director of Golf at the Jim Wise Golf Academy at Medina Country Club. We have five instructors at the academy, and we teach over 2,000 lessons per year and coach over 500 juniors every year.
