Community Grant Program SUMMER 2023

PROGRAM OVERVIEW The goal of this community grant program is to include a diverse range of perspec�ves, experiences, backgrounds, and exper�se in the public planning process for Big Basin’s redevelopment by priori�zing focus communi�es that are historically underrepresented, have been less frequent visitors of the park, and/or have been less involved in park planning. Par�cularly, Parks California is priori�zing grants to lower income communi�es and communi�es of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. In the first round of engagement there were a total of 100+ individual par�cipants across 12 individual events, the following groups received grants to conduct on-site guided hikes:

Hiking Workbooks One aspect of these guided hikes included a hiking workbook that was available in both English and Spanish. The workbook included ques�ons and prompts to gather informa�on about visitor experience preferences that may be helpful in making decisions about facili�es planning, design, and management.

The workbook included both mul�ple choice ques�ons and more open-ended and crea�ve prompts, all of the informa�on writen and drawn in the workbooks was recorded and transcribed and is provided in this Community Grant Program Summary Public Dra� | 04 January 2024

document. The workbooks were intended as a nature journal and conversa�on starter to guide more in�mate discussions. Insights from both workbook contents and the facilitated discussions are synthesized together and presented below.

I would like a campsite that feels remote but has a few basic ecofriendly ameni�es. I wouldn't necessarily need showers and toilets that flush but potable water and some compost toilets could make a difference for a longer visit. It would be nice to have campsites that feel remote or are visually separate from other groups/ sites. Access to shade and emergency supplies are also a plus as is there is being a limited number of people allowed at one �me. (reserva�ons) I love educa�onal programs even for adults - maybe have a kid friendly and adult programs - night hikes - star gazing.

I like to have simple ameni�es like running water and toilets. Having easy to read signs to find campsites or trails.

I do both car camping and backpacking. They are different experiences. Would love a local op�on for backpacking with remote spots and lots of trails access but I grew up coming to Big Basin just for the day to hike and picnic and that is a great op�on too.

I see myself apprecia�ng bathrooms/showers nearby and maybe a nearby visitor center or at least a lot of maps/informa�onal placards. comfortable, easy or at least a litle easy, enjoyable, memorable trip If i was planning a camping trip, I would love to be able to have flushable bathrooms nearby.

I would like to either be able to camp near my car or one mile distance near or next to a body of water we can swim in. Fire pit and grills on camp site. being able to have the choice of both primi�ve/secluded campsites and closer to other campsites with arrive-in op�ons. It is helpful to have some sites with picnic tables and fire pits. Having water source whether that is a communal or at each site.

Plenty of room between campsites, restrict music allowed for listening to nature A nice campsite that doesn't impact the surrounding too much. Accessible but not disrup�ve or excessive I like having access to my car in case of emergency. Also showers are super nice for a�er a hike.

We would want a fun experience and people that are fun and nice Affordable camping price. Like if they are low income families, food stamps, etc..., they should have a discount for camping

I doubt that it would be possible without a personal vehicle if there were shutles in my area that would be my only op�ons.

I would invite a friend or look at bus op�ons. Otherwise I'd go elsewhere. ask friends to carpool. Plan group hikes or camping.

Rideshare=$$. I don't even know what public transport op�ons there are!!!

I would probably rent a car but it would be expensive and require me to invite more people so we can split the cost. Ideally, there would be a place to get a ride or take a bus with storage at a scheduled �me and place.

I'd probably carpool but ideally use public transpo if it was direct. a public transporta�on would really help to bridge the gap between departure and des�na�on.

I would probably uber to the nearest shutle, carpool to the nearest shutle-if there are no accessible public transporta�on route to the shutle. However, if I could easily take the bus/train I would. i wouldn't go without access to a personal vehicle. I would feel stranded.

I would take the BART from Oakland to as close to here as it will take me. Then the greyhound. Then the local transporta�on. ride share but there is det an issue of cost which would create a barrier for me to be able to go.

"Saved by Nature" "Bay Area Older Adults" I have no Idea how I would be able to get here There aren't any op�ons at the moment. I would have to ask friends who have cars and are willing to drive get a bus or have a friend drive me / us I wouldn't come without a care or without someone with a car I wish there was a place in San Jose that had a pick up/bus shutle for the park. For example, in the Diridon train sta�on of San Jose, because there, people could leave their cars in the parking lot. This would also help free up parking spaces in the park, and make it more accessible for people that are elderly like myself, that don't drive and depend on other people, but also equally love the outdoors/nature.

I tried to figure out how to get here via public transporta�on, and was not able to par�cipate. Maybe I would look for other op�ons, but I actually don't know of any other alterna�ve.

encourage la�nx folks by hos�ng events tailored to la comunidad. La�nx hikes led by ranger or people from you community. La�nx educa�onal programs that remind us, even though we are mixed, we also descend from indigenous peoples.

It would be great to have permanent widespread info about indigenous stewardship and have events for different groups like for La�no Heritage Month or Pride Month. Not park by park but across all parks. I can visual a nice event where we write or paint about nature in a reflec�ve quiet way.

I like to find a view spot or river and I wet the back of my neck and face and thank the water because my body is mostly water and do a gra�tude medita�on and thank my angels and guides.

I would like to see the park have more informa�on and communica�on for people with less resources or who historically have not had/received access to trips/travel in nature.

I've overcome two housefires - I've started life with nothing I think I've been a support system for my job as a peer mentor all year and its been challenging to be put together for other people all the �me suppor�ng each other in a lot of ways. I grew up next to a park that had CCC Buildings. They are a great sensory experience. I love seeing all the non-profits know each other. I'm very happy to go on this hike and learn redwood trees again.

I loved learning about the redwoods. They're my favorite tree & want them to have as much protec�on as possible. Especially old growth.

I wanna lean more about the indigenous prac�ces including history & present There should be some sorts of ac�vi�es that one can do besides hiking. Is there where that one could get into. ex. creek / lake I wish it will open soon to the public. It is very magical area and the redwoods are surviving in a great way.
