Chief Executive’s report Autumn 2012 marked the start of Place2Be’s 18th birthday year. While in some ways it seems only yesterday that we embarked on our journey, in others it seems light-years we have travelled, developing and evolving our services.

It was while working as a counsellor with young people that I found myself constantly thinking my work was too little, too late – some of the young people I saw had already made unhealthy life choices and found themselves with deep-rooted problems. I wondered what would have happened if they had received support early on – from someone accessible with time to listen, to help them develop ways to cope with their life circumstances, giving them the skills to be more resilient and confident.

Perhaps then they would have made better choices, developed nurturing relationships and fostered brighter lives for themselves. I realised that we needed to reach children and their families sooner and bring the service to them: into their schools, the heart of the community.

From our original service providing counselling to children in schools, Place2Be has grown to be so much more. Children can now ask for support themselves by using our self-referral service, not only

removing stigma from our one-to-one counselling work but extending the benefits of good mental health to the whole school. Knowing how critical positive parenting is for children’s early development and future success, we have extended our work with parents across primary and secondary schools and also reach children even earlier in children’s centres. We have developed our support and training for school staff, mindful of the challenges teachers face in the classroom , which many feel ill-equipped to manage.

With the expertise that we have gained over 18 years, we offer a range of professional qualifications and accredited training programmes for those who work with children. From our start in a handful of London schools in 1994, we are now based in over 170 schools across the UK. From the beginning, we recognised that it was imperative to demonstrate the impact of our work and to use this evidence to continuously develop and improve our services to ensure that they are of the highest quality, sustainable and consistent across the UK. While quality is at the heart of what we do, value for money is equally important. Our internal business analysis report Cost Effective Positive Outcomes demonstrated that for every £1 spent on Place2Be counselling support, there is a minimum cost saving of £6 to society. We can increasingly evidence the real difference we make to children’s emotional wellbeing.

between our support and how we help improve behaviour and learning outcomes for children. Over the past year, 77% of the children in the most severe group of emotional difficulties showed a significant improvement according to their teachers after one-to-one counselling, while 82% of these children showed significant improvement according to their parents.

At a recent school visit the Head Teacher told us about a young boy who was being brought up by his grandmother because his father was in prison. Sadly his grandmother unexpectedly passed away. The boy said to his Head Teacher: “Sometimes I’m too sad to go to school, but I always come on Mondays because that’s when I have Place2Be.” Place2Be has always had big aspirations for itself and I’m surrounded by a fantastic team of 250 passionate and professional staff and 700 highly skilled volunteers, who work tirelessly to make these aspirations a reality.

However, at the very core of our aspirations and hope for the future are the children, the parents and the teachers that we support. They inspire us with their courage and resilience.

Our work would have been impossible without the loyalty and the commitment of our supporters and it is vital to us that our investors see the impact of their investment. Over the

past year alone over 21,000 children used Place2Talk, our self-referral service, 2,976 children received weekly one-to-one counselling and our 12 parent counsellors across the UK supported 362 parents who would otherwise not have had access to this level of consistent, professional support. Thank you on behalf of them all. It is your confidence and commitment to our work that continues to encourage us to grow in scale and ambition.

The need for Place2Be’s services is huge and it is growing. Our first 18 years have firmly established us as the UK’s leading provider of schoolbased emotional and mental health support for children. In the next three years we hope to double the number of children we reach but we need your continued support to achieve this. My involvement with Place2Be began in 1995 and it has been a privilege to be involved in its development.

In 2011/12, against the backdrop of ongoing recession and increasing pressure on funding, Place2Be continued to play a vital and growing role providing access to counselling and emotional wellbeing support to over 59,000 children, their parents and families across the UK.

The Government schools agenda has been shifting. We are seeing wide-scale expansion of academies and new school structures, including federations, free schools and clusters of schools, and we have been evolving our approach and solutions accordingly.

Place2Be is very well-placed to demonstrate the positive impact of our work in schools. We have evidence that our interventions contribute to improved behaviour, attendance and academic progress, as well as helping children become more resilient,

happier and able to cope with the challenges that they face.

In these changing and challenging times, Place2Be’s aim remains firm: to uphold the high quality of our schoolbased services; to reach more of those who need our support; to raise our profile in order to grow our funding streams; recruit high calibre staff and volunteers; and to extend our influence.

We all have a stake in the future of our society. Place2Be is determined to make the future brighter for each and every child and parent it supports, and to enable others to do so by training and developing the skills of teachers, counsellors and other professionals who work with children.

Governance Place2Be has a clinically proven, robust model for its work supporting children and adults. Maintaining consistent high quality is vital for the organisation.

We gather, analyse and use evidence to challenge and continuously improve our services and demonstrate accountability to our commissioners, funders and school communities.

Our work with children continued The impact of Place2Be goes on long after the direct work with children has ended. Very often children who have been to Place2Be are the most emotionally literate in their class.

Place2Be School Project Managers at each school obtain parents’ consent to collect data on their child. School Project Managers ask teachers, parents and children themselves to complete questionnaires about their behaviour and emotional and social wellbeing before the start of the intervention and after the intervention is completed. At the end of each academic year, children’s outcomes are analysed as anonymised data.

How we work The referral and counselling process Children are referred by teachers, their parents, carers or allied professionals to Place2Be’s School Project Manager for an assessment.

Place2Be only works with children whose parents or carers have given written consent. As counselling takes place during school hours, the attendance rate is exceptionally high.

One-to-one sessions Once it is determined that a child would benefit from counselling, a counsellor meets with the child for weekly one-to-one sessions of 50 minutes. Individual weekly counselling sessions can last from a school term to a whole academic year. Place2Be’s trained counsellors work in the way that is most appropriate for each child. For younger children, this involves therapeutic approaches which encourage the child to express her or himself in non-verbal ways, for example through artwork and play.

Group work We provide short-term group work on issues such as transition, bereavement, friendship or selfesteem that have a positive impact on children’s behaviour, attendance and general wellbeing.

Place2Talk This is a universal service where children can refer themselves, come alone or with their friends to speak to a counsellor during break times.

Open to all pupils, the service is used by an average of 40% of children in schools each year. Often just a few sessions can help children cope with a particular concern. Place2Talk may also act as an initial safety net for children with bigger issues who are then referred for one-to-one counselling. Because Place2Talk is offered to all children, one-to-one counselling is de-stigmatised.

Case Study: Lonely

Denzel Denzel, a six-year-old boy in Year 2, had been in foster care for two years after leaving the family home and his sister. He was referred to one-to-one counselling because he often found it difficult to cope in class and to deal with change.

Denzel used drawing to work through complex feelings and to make sense

of his family network. He often drew his family and foster family and had many conversations on a toy telephone with his biological mother.

His teacher commented on how he had become more successful at controlling his emotions, was much better at concentrating and was doing better academically.

Case Study: Sad

Maya Five-year-old Maya was referred for one-to-one counselling by her class teacher. Devastated by the sudden death of her grandmother, Maya was angry and aggressive at home and in class and found it difficult to talk to her mum. Maya told her mum that she wanted to die so that she could see her Nana again.

In the Place2Be room Maya drew out her feelings depicting the loss of her Nana. Over time, her pictures became brighter and she was able to talk about her feelings of loss to her Place2Be Counsellor. She started to talk to Mum, who began to make a book with her at home about her grandmother. At the ending meeting her mum said, “Maya has really improved and I wanted you to know how grateful I am.�

Case Study: Abused

Charmaine Charmaine, a Year 7 pupil, was polite and tried her best academically. A teacher referred her for one-to-one counselling because of ‘the sad look in her eyes’. The sad look was the only clue to Charmaine’s family history. Her alcoholic father had physically abused Charmaine and her mother for years.

Charmaine had alerted the police after an especially violent attack. Her father was removed from the home.

Charmaine developed panic attacks and night terrors. Place2Be’s School Project Manager worked with her mother to help her access support for

herself, which would also enable her to help her daughter.

In one-to-one counselling sessions Charmaine expressed her buried and long-held pain through painting and drawing. She, her mother and her teacher all noted the significant improvement in her feeling of self worth. With support, her mother began to develop a life alone with her daughter, on a firmer footing and for the first time that she could remember, with optimism.

Case Study: Angry

Sam Eight-year-old Sam was taken away from his mother, a single parent struggling with drug addiction, placed first in care, and then with long-term foster parents. He came regularly to Place2Talk. When his behaviour deteriorated he was referred to one-to-one counselling.

Christmas approached. Sam’s foster family did everything they could to make it a happy one for him and their children. Sam had a violent tantrum, destroying presents and damaging

feelings. The family was unsure they could continue fostering him.

One-to-one counselling helped Sam make sense of his reaction. He had never had a Christmas with family and presents, and his foster parents’ efforts reminded him of what he had missed.

Place2Be helped his foster mother understand Sam’s reaction. He now behaves considerably better at school.

The Head Teacher reported that without Place2Be Sam would probably have been excluded from school.

Case Study: Insecure

Alia Alia, a nine-year-old girl, was very self-conscious. She had been referred for one-to-one counselling due to concerns about her weight gain and her introverted manner. Her home was overcrowded and she had little privacy.

At first Alia spoke in a whisper and found it difficult to make eye contact.

She drew figures to represent her family members. She was a small animal in the corner of the drawing.

When the Place2Be Counsellor

asked her how she would like things to change in the future, she drew a dinosaur and roared, “I want to be that T-Rex!” After a number of sessions Alia had become much more outgoing and expressive. “I’m happy because the teachers aren’t angry with me anymore,” she told her counsellor.

Her teachers reported that she was participating in class and interacting positively with her peers.

Case Study: Frustrated

Elijah Elijah was referred in Year 4 because he was angry and disruptive in class.

His mother had recently had a new baby. His father lived in their home country and had a new family. Elijah created volcanoes and angry clouds and monsters in his sessions. He said, “My monster wants to be the same as everyone else so they will be friends with him.”

Elijah did not feel that this was his country. He missed his father and grandmother.

By the end of the intervention Elijah’s moods were lighter and he was interacting much more with his counsellor. His mother reported he was now playful and gentler with his siblings. He had made many friends at school, was working hard and improving academically.

Our work with parents Recognising the critical role that parents play in their children’s emotional wellbeing, Place2Be helps parents, grandparents and carers to be more at ease in their parenting roles and better able to develop positive and supportive relationships with their children and the school.

We also extended our work with Parents in the Early Years. We ran A Place for Parents in children’s centres, and provided training for staff. We progressed our pilot project with EPEC (Empowering Parents, Empowering Communities) in partnership with The Centre for Parent and Child Support in south London.

Socio-demographic profile of the parents referred to A Place for Parents A total of 293 parents started A Place for Parents intervention in 2011/12: • 91% were female.

• 26% were from BME groups.

• 56% were lone parents.

• 22% were unemployed and 28% were in full- or part-time employment.

Parents’ outcomes Place2Be uses the CORE-OM – a measure used to assess psychological distress – to evaluate the impact of our work with parents. This widely used and validated tool assesses parents before, during and after they receive counselling support.

Outcomes for the 123 parents who completed an intervention in 2011/12 are presented below: • There was an improvement in 122 parents’ Total Scores (comprised of subscales relating to Wellbeing, Problems and Symptoms, Functioning and Risk) between pre- and postintervention (99% of parents’ mental health had improved after receiving support).

• The mean Total Score for parents preintervention was 50.3 (clinical range).

This reduced to 23.0 (non-clinical range) post-intervention.

• Of the 91 parents who were affected by mental health disorders before intervention, 67% showed no mental health disorder symptoms postintervention.

Our work with schools and their communities Managing emotional, behavioural and discipline issues is time-consuming and diverts school leadership and staff attention from their core tasks of improving the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom.

It can also raise staff stress levels.

All of these issues have a negative impact on the entire school.

Place2Be’s interventions help schools make the best use of their valuable teaching and staff resources.

Place2Think Place2Be provides teachers and school staff with a consultation service and training sessions addressing themes relating to children’s emotional wellbeing in schools, such as safeguarding, attachment, understanding risks and resilience, working effectively with parents, resolving conflict and supporting transitions. Place2Think sessions provide practical approaches that enable teachers to support children more effectively.

Working in partnership We are an important member of the BOND (Better Outcomes, New Delivery) Consortium, a Department for Education-funded two-year sector-led programme building the capacity of voluntary and community sector organisations to deliver early intervention mental health support to children and young people.

Place2Be is a core member of the Children & Young People’s Mental Health Coalition, playing a key role in contributing expertise and in setting its priorities. Place2Be is also a member of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) Outcome Research Consortium (CORC), a not-for-profit learning collaboration examining the best way of evaluating outcomes across CAMHS Services to ensure that young people and their families receive the best possible service.

Our School Project Managers in primary schools spent over 12,000 hours with school staff and over 2,400 hours working with other agencies such as CAMHS and Social Services.

Professional training and qualifications Schools and Communities Training Place2Be offers consultancy support, advice and workplace learning to teachers and school staff.

We are a leading provider of specialist training and university-validated professional qualifications to those who work clinically with children, helping to build capacity in local communities.

Through our Schools and Communities training programmes 827 people were trained in the 2011/12 financial year.

Grant funding from the Department for Education enabled us to run 50 days of ‘Working with Parents’ training, reaching 500 school and community staff in Croydon, Medway, Wandsworth, Shoreditch, Greenwich, Ealing, Leeds, Harlow, East Lancashire, Pendle, County Durham, Greater Manchester, Southwark, Reading, Twickenham, Brent and Enfield. This training was rated as ‘extremely useful’ or ‘useful’ to their work by 96% of participants. We delivered bespoke training to partner organisations including the Family Mosaic Housing Association and the London Fire Brigade.

Place2Be provides a suite of specialist clinical Professional Qualifications courses, ranging from the introductory Taster Day to the Postgraduate Diploma and Masters in Counselling Children in Schools – validated by the University of East London and accredited by the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP).

We welcomed 269 participants on to our Taster Days, with 153 people going on to longer Professional Qualifications training courses.

We ran the Level 2 Access Course in Counselling Skills for Working with Children in London and Cardiff.

The Level 3 Foundation Course in Counselling Skills for Working with Children ran in Leeds and Medway for the first time. Feedback from the External Verifier for the course was extremely positive.

We acheived BACP Accreditation for our Postgraduate Diploma course and received a very positive report from the external examiner for our Postgraduate Diploma and Masters in Counselling Children in Schools.

Looking ahead Place2Be has ambitious plans to grow our services for children, their families, teachers and school staff.

Our main emphasis is on the following four areas: 1 Expand our impact on primary schools We wish to replicate our model in 20 new primary schools in the priority regional ‘hub’ areas that we work in.

2 Expand our impact on secondary schools We wish to refine and embed our services in our seven existing secondary schools and to replicate the model in three new secondary schools.

3 Share our expertise and knowledge through training and communications We wish to develop a professional pathway for children’s counsellors; and raise the profile of Place2Be as a teaching and learning organisation, and as the leading UK provider of children’s emotional and mental health services in schools.

4 Develop selected area-wide services We wish to pilot the following selected area-wide services: Early Years; A Place for Counsellors; Place2Think; and work with Academies and Federations.

Fundraising Place2Be received its highest ever total of voluntary income in 2011/12 of £2.9 million.

We are sincerely grateful to each and every one of our supporters.

Quintessentially generously raised £300,000 for Place2Be, raising over half of this by holding a London to Edinburgh bike ride. A team of 52 cyclists, including Quintessentially Founding Directors Ben Elliot and Paul Drummond and Place2Be champions

from police teams across the country, took on the five-day sponsored cycle covering 468 miles. Quintessentially’s donation supported our services in schools in Enfield and Croydon.

Man Group chose Place2Be as its Charity of the Year, and supported us with a number of events throughout the year, the most dramatic of which was the Finance Team’s abseil from the top of Guys and St Thomas’s Hospital.

Man Group’s support amounted to £170,000 and this enabled us to deliver services to over 28,000 children for a

year. The Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon in October is a mainstay in our events calendar. A team of 25 runners including Place2Be Counsellors, office staff, corporate supporters Man Group and Morgan McKinley, and valued friends took part and raised over £19,000 in support of our work.

In March 2012, 300 guests attended a Wine Dinner at The Savoy Hotel in aid of three charities including Place2Be. We were delighted to be a recipient of this high-profile event, generously spearheaded by Johnny Goedhuis, supported by a Wine Dinner Committee and stage-managed by Maggie Heath, which raised £75,000 for Place2Be.

We are delighted to have such committed and generous companies at our side – special thanks to our friends at Fidelity UK, Bloomberg, Bain Capital, Aspect Capital Limited, Macdonald Hotels & Resorts Ltd, ‘Shrek the Musical’ (DreamWorks Theatricals), The Nomura Charitable Trust, Paperchase Products Limited and UBS. Place2Be’s success over the last 18 years is largely due to the many individual and corporate loyal supporters who believe in our work and who give us the moral and financial support to grow our services to reach more children. To all our supporters – corporate and sporty – we give our warmest thanks.

We were very grateful to the Private Equity Foundation (PEF), our most significant long-standing partners, for recognising us with their Best Portfolio Charity Award this year. PEF has supported the charity since 2007 with grants totalling £740,000. PEF has connected us with a network of successful businesses, helping our organisation to become more effective, efficient and financially sustainable.
