Chief Executive’s Report

The case for supporting children’s mental health and early intervention has never been stronger.

At Place2Be everyone is a vital champion for children’s mental health.

It has been a privilege to work with Place2Be as one of these champions since 1996, and at the start of 2014 I was honoured to take the baton from our Founder Benita Refson OBE and move into the role of Chief Executive.

Thanks to our firm foundations, we are in a strong position to extend our reach to many more children and schools in the years to come. I would like to thank Benny for all that she has done over the years as CEO, for all that I know she will do as President, and for making the transition into our new roles run so smoothly.

We have made great strides towards achieving the priorities set out in our 2013-16 strategy. Working with over 90,000 children across 221 schools, we continue to expand our impact, both in breadth through the numbers of children we reach, as well as in the depth of our services.

Parent counselling is now available in 50 per cent of our primary schools, and we look forward to having this service available for parents across all of our primary schools.

Our training also continues to grow in importance as a vital means through which we can share expertise and equip the wider children’s workforce and communities to support vulnerable children.

With our volunteer numbers now just reaching 1,000, this is another major milestone and a reflection of the passion for children’s mental health amongst our inspiring volunteers.

We are extremely grateful, as always, to our committed supporters, without whom we could not reach the thousands of children, teachers and parents who access our services.

The need for our work does not stop.

It is vital that we realise our plans to reach many more children through the provision of accessible, high quality early intervention and mental health support. We look forward to working together with our funders, volunteers, staff, partners, and schools, to make an even greater difference to the lives of children and local communities in the years ahead.

Chair’s Statement

As we enter Place2Be’s twentieth year, I continue to be astounded by the incredible work of our staff, volunteers and schools, and the difference they are making to young people’s lives.

The start of 2014 saw a significant change at Place2Be – Benita Refson’s move after almost 20 years as Chief Executive to become non-executive President of the charity. It is always inspiring to work alongside Benny – someone so driven to do whatever it takes to make a difference to children’s lives. All whose lives have been touched by Place2Be are enormously grateful for everything she has achieved. The Trustees are delighted that Benita accepted our invitation to remain a Trustee and accept the honorary position of President. It is no surprise that as President, Benita seems to be working as hard as ever, contributing to Place2Be’s next chapter.

We are delighted that Catherine Roche, previously our Chief Operating Officer, has taken on the role of Chief Executive. We look forward to continuing to grow and succeed under Catherine’s leadership.

We have enjoyed our first year with the Royal Patronage of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge. It is an honour to have such support. We have welcomed Her Royal Highness to a number of Place2Be events, and her

enthusiasm and interest has been an inspiration for everyone at Place2Be. It has been a real privilege and pleasure to work with her.

It is encouraging to see Place2Be close the financial year in such a strong position, no small feat in a volatile financial climate. Our fundraising, finance and executive teams have done sterling work to develop and maintain crucial relationships with our funders to enable our work and growth to continue.

Beyond the statistics about our impact – impressive evidence that our work is effective – the feedback we receive from the people we support is invaluable. The child who says that her counsellor has made her feel safe, the teacher who says Place2Be has helped a formerly unhappy child enjoy learning, the parent who tells us that counselling has helped bring the family closer together – here is the evidence that a world really is possible where children have the opportunity to grow up with prospects rather than problems.

Our work with children

There is a widespread need for Place2Be’s school-based early intervention services.

One in ten children aged between 5 and 16 years has a mental health problem1 . That’s three in every classroom. If left unaddressed, these problems frequently persist into adulthood.

What’s more, children in the poorest households are three times more likely to have a mental illness than children living in the best-off households2 .

We know that poor mental health in childhood leads to poor concentration on schoolwork, which is not only a barrier to learning, but can also lead to absence from school, and ultimately poor academic grades.

Place2Be provides integrated school-based mental health services without stigmatising children, young people or families, and at a point where they need it most. This support effectively removes the emotional barriers to learning and prevents the downward spiral that can lead to low aspirations, poor educational achievement, truancy and exclusion from school.

It helps improve children’s attitudes to learning and academic progress. It builds children’s, young people’s and families’ resilience, providing them with brighter prospects and more hopeful futures.

How we work Children are referred by teachers, parents or other professionals to Place2Be’s School Project Manager for an assessment. Place2Be only works with children whose parents or carers have given written consent.

Our work with children

Measuring outcomes Place2Be is committed to rigorous measurement and uses a range of tools, including the Goodman’s Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (the SDQ).

This is a recognised, validated tool, approved by the Department of Health, which we use to assess children’s behavioural, emotional and social wellbeing before and after they receive counselling support. Teachers, parents and children complete these questionnaires. We also use YP-CORE for children in secondary schools, and CORE-OM to assess parent counselling.

Place2Be School Project Managers at each school obtain parents’ consent to collect data on their child. At the end of each academic year, children’s outcomes are analysed.

Benchmarking Place2Be is a member of the Child Outcomes Research Consortium (CORC), a collaboration of mental health specialists from over 70 Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) across the UK. Our data is rigorously analysed each year, resulting in a report comparing service outcomes with the rest of CORC. In the last report, parents and children rated our service more positively on problem improvement and helpfulness than other services.

Children who had counselling through Place2Be had significantly lower difficulties after counselling, (as measured by the parent and child completed SDQs), than the rest of CORC.

Sarah was able to talk to her friends about how she felt instead of hurting herself...

Sarah, age 9 Nine-year-old Sarah would regularly go home after school in tears, saying she felt very distressed about disagreements that took place between her and her schoolmates. Sarah wanted everyone to get on and be happy. She was anxious when this didn’t happen and wondered if she were to blame.

She wasn’t always able to get the support that she needed from her parents and started to use self-harm as a coping mechanism to deal with these emotions. Sarah would take herself away into her room, and would bite herself and pull her hair when she felt frustrated. During her Place2Be counselling sessions, Sarah was keen to express herself through painting and was able to use her art to make sense of her feelings at school and at home. By the end of her time with Place2Be, Sarah was able to talk to her friends about how she felt instead of hurting herself, and had developed the confidence and skills to deal with the difficulties she faced. She learnt not to keep everything inside and, instead of blaming herself for her schoolmates’ behaviour, she developed the confidence and composure to recognise that ‘they might just be having a bad day.’

Mia, age 7 Mia, age seven, was referred to Place2Be as she was at risk of being taken into care. Mia was the eldest of five children, four of whom were going to be placed with foster families because their mother was unable to look after them. Mia became confused, subdued, and would not communicate her feelings. This caused her to be very disruptive in school, and she would argue with other children and not follow instructions from her teacher. Working with the school, Place2Be was able to offer support to Mia both before, during and after she moved in with her foster family. The counselling sessions allowed Mia to share her worries and feelings of guilt about letting her mother down by living with someone else. Following the counselling Mia became much happier, was more cooperative in the classroom, and made a very strong connection with her counsellor. The Pastoral Lead at Mia’s school said: ‘Mia is a much happier child because of Place2Be; she has the skills and tools to express herself and now has more friends in school.’

Tony, age 10 Tony, a ten-year-old boy, was in turn anxious and withdrawn, liable to lash out when provoked. At first, Tony refused to talk about his feelings, but gradually began to express himself through play. Using a sand tray and toy animals, Tony played out scenarios where the daddy animal would hurt the mummy animal, and the baby animals would hide. Tony began to explain that he did not want to come to school because he was afraid that his mother might be hurt and would not be back to collect him. The Place2Be counsellor was able to offer support to Tony’s mother, and details of domestic abuse began to emerge. Place2Be was able to work with Tony, his mother and support agencies. Tony made huge progress in his emotional wellbeing. At the end of the counselling Tony remarked that ‘Place2Be is my favourite lesson in school.’

‘We often show a mask to the outside world that is different to how we truly feel about ourselves inside. It can help to talk to somebody in confidence about how we’re feeling.’

Jenny, age 12 Jenny, age 12, was referred to Place2Be by the school nurse, after she opened up during a routine check-up about anxiety attacks and an incident of self-harm. Jenny’s school work had been suffering, and she was uncharacteristically picking fights with fellow pupils, disrupting lessons and had been socially excluded three times in a fortnight.

Her father welcomed the support Place2Be could offer, but he expressed doubts about whether his daughter would actually talk to anyone.

In her first session with the Place2Be counsellor, Jenny described herself as ‘a volcano that needs to erupt, but the words won’t come out’. They worked creatively together to help her access her thoughts and feelings; to process them and to explore ways of dealing with them.

They created timelines and family trees, which helped Jenny recognise and acknowledge how deeply she had been affected by her parents’ recent decision to separate. Over the weeks, she spoke at length about her feelings of loss, betrayal and isolation, about how her sadness and anger had been bottled up inside; that she had not known how to deal with it.

‘I’ve been making myself miserable over all of this and taking it out on everyone around me. I want to do things differently.’

After finishing her sessions, Jenny’s form tutor reported a dramatic turnaround in her behaviour, attitude and classwork. Jenny was seen smiling around the school, surrounded by friends and, although now separated, her parents attended Parents’ Evening together and passed on their thanks for ‘giving us our daughter back’.

Chief Executive’s Report Place2Talk

Place2Be’s services don’t just address the worries of individual children. They also help to build ‘mentally healthy’ schools where all children can thrive.

Our universal service – Place2Talk – is open to all pupils, and is used by an average of 35% of children in primary schools each year. Often just a few sessions can help children cope with a particular concern.

Because Place2Talk is offered to all children, one-to-one counselling is de-stigmatised.

Around two thirds of the young people who used Place2Talk were girls, across both primary and secondary schools.

There was a difference between the issues raised by primary school children compared to secondary school children. Friendship was discussed more in primary schools, whereas emotional issues such as anxiety or depression were discussed more in secondary schools.

Reflecting the growth in our Partner Schools, the number of students attending Place2Talk has increased by 50% over the past five years.

Place2Talk also acts as a crucial entry point for children with bigger issues, who are then referred for one-to-one counselling. Over the past five years, sessions were most likely to result in a referral to one-to-one counselling if they related to family issues such as substance misuse, violence or divorce. Issues such as eating disorders or sexuality, normally associated with adolescence, were also evident amongst primary school children. Â

Our work with parents and families

Recognising the critical role that parents play in their children’s emotional wellbeing, Place2Be helps parents and carers to be more at ease in their roles and better able to develop positive relationships with their children and the school.

George and Sharon George, age nine, was often angry and aggressive towards his brothers; constantly picking fights and arguments. George’s mum and dad had separated and his dad was in prison for being violent towards his mum. Described by members of school staff as having ‘sad eyes’ George was withdrawn, struggled to concentrate in class and would use violence towards his brothers as a way to express the fears he had about anybody hurting his mother again.

‘I am so happy to have my old son back; Place2Be has helped our entire family move on with our lives.’

Whilst George was struggling to control his behaviour, his mum Sharon was also finding it very hard to cope with how she had been treated by George’s father and the impact this had on the family. The School Project Manager suggested that some parent counselling sessions might be helpful.

Although Sharon was initially very hesitant, and concerned that she would not be able to talk about her feelings, she decided to give it a go. After her first few sessions she told the School Project Manager: ‘This is the best thing I have ever done.’ Sharon found that dedicating this time each week to herself was extremely helpful, as she was able to take control of her family situation and better understand her son’s behaviour. Sharon told the School Project Manager that accessing support in the safety of the school environment made things feel less daunting.

George also found his one-to-one Place2Be sessions extremely helpful; his counsellor ensured that he had a safe and secure place where he was free to express himself.

As George’s counselling progressed, he became happier, calmer and less aggressive.

When George’s dad was released from prison, with the help of the counsellor and Place2Be, George and mum Sharon were able to establish a stable relationship with him. Sharon said: ‘I am so happy to have my old son back; Place2Be has helped our entire family move on with our lives.’

Sharing our expertise

At Place2Be, we draw on our depth and range of experience to help teachers and school staff to effectively manage emotional and behavioural issues.

This reduces the time and attention that school leadership and staff spend away from their core teaching duties. We also work in partnership with leading organisations in our field.

Place2Think Delivered by Place2Be clinicians, Place2Think is a consultation service for teachers and school staff to help them understand a child’s behaviour, and find effective solutions and strategies to support the child, the family and the school professional.

Place2Be also offers training sessions addressing themes relating to children’s emotional wellbeing in schools, such as safeguarding, attachment, understanding risks and resilience, working effectively with parents, resolving conflict and supporting transitions.

Influencing national policy Over the past year Place2Be has worked to influence national policy. In June 2014, our Chief Executive Catherine Roche gave oral evidence to the Health Select Committee reviewing Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services. Her comments around training for teachers were included in the Committee’s Third Report: ‘We need to train teachers and to build the understanding of school staff generally - teaching and nonteaching - around children’s behaviour and what lies behind that behaviour, which is often just a manifestation of a child’s mental health issue.’

Place2Be has actively contributed to government consultations on Teacher Training, Ofsted and Special Educational Needs. As a leading member of the Children and Young People’s Mental Health Coalition, we have successfully lobbied for better and more timely support for children and young people facing mental health challenges.

Place2Be has now hosted three ‘Connecting to the Frontline’ programmes. This Department of Health initiative stems from a recommendation in ‘The Francis Report’, which encourages senior Civil Servants to spend time on the frontline of health services.

We continue to work in partnership with the Children and Young People’s Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (CYP IAPT) programme and offer our expertise to the Cabinet Office’s ‘Commissioning Academy’.

He was usually unable to sit still or listen to other children when they were talking, and his moods would regularly change from being anxious and clinging, to aggressive. Sometimes he would be happy to engage with other children and other times he needed constant attention from the School Project Manager and would get very upset if he did not receive it.

David’s father had left the family home. David found this incredibly hard and confusing, so he was referred to Place2Be one-to-one counselling. During his initial sessions he talked about his constantly changing moods and his worries about not being a good friend. David welcomed the opportunity to work with his counsellor; he was always really keen to attend his sessions and embraced the opportunity to express himself through play.

Through this work with David, the Place2Be School Project Manager was able to gain a greater understanding of his complex needs, and refer him to the NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service for further specialist support. David became a calmer child and was more able to listen to adults. Instead of refusing to listen to his mother and school staff, he has learned to understand the importance of being cooperative.

Building the workforce

Place2Be offers expert support, advice and training. We are now a leading provider of specialist training and university-validated professional qualifications, sharing our 20 years of practical experience.

Training for Working with Children and Families Last year, 1,265 professionals from education, youth and community sectors undertook Place2Be training.

Professional Qualifications

Recognising the important role of teachers, our Talented Teacher Programme provides a unique package of training and support for Newly Qualified Teachers, with 70 taking part in 2013-14.

Place2Be provides a suite of specialist Professional Qualification courses, ranging from the introductory Taster Day to the Postgraduate Diploma and Masters in Counselling Children in Schools.

After completing the training, 97% felt confident that they could actively identify and address emotional issues in their pupils.

Department for Education funding enabled us to continue our ‘Working with Parents’ training.

We ran 40 training days across 11 locations and delivered the training to Teach First primary participants.

In partnership with other organisations, we delivered Better Outcomes New Delivery – to build the capacity of front-line services to deliver early intervention services and to strengthen commissioning relationships.

Our Mentoring Programme, which trains young people to provide support to younger children, continued to grow in popularity. Students from four schools took part, as well as professionals in the Wheatley Group of Housing Associations.

Our courses are validated and accredited by the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB), the University of East London (UEL) and the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

64% of our Level 3 graduates took up Volunteer Counsellor placements with Place2Be. We welcomed 508 participants onto our Taster Days – a 47% increase from 2012/13. 234 people went on to take up places on longer Professional Qualifications training courses.

We successfully rolled out the Level 4 Certificate in Counselling Children (Practice) across the country, with 64 volunteer counsellors attending groups in London, Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds and Manchester.

We ran our largest ever Postgraduate Diploma cohort, with 26 students joining the courses.

Training for Place2Be staff and Volunteer Counsellors ‘I would definitely recommend this course to all NQTs. My teacher training course was four years - if they’d put half of what we learned on the course into that degree, we’d have come away much better equipped.’

We developed our own staff and volunteer talent by offering continuing professional development to support clinical practice in schools. 3,070 training places were taken up by clinical staff and Volunteer Counsellors.

We increased our child protection and safeguarding training workshops for clinical staff and, in collaboration with Action on Addiction, delivered ‘Hidden Harm’ training on the impact of parental drug and alcohol misuse on children’s wellbeing.

Our two new Educational Psychologists, supported with funding from the Department for Education, extended our expertise around Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). We also delivered two pilot workshops for Volunteer Counsellors.

Fundraising

Place2Be reported £4.1 million of voluntary income in 2013/14.

We are deeply grateful to each and every one of our supporters for helping to ensure the future strength of the organisation.

We were delighted to secure new commitments from the Pears Foundation, Thompson Family Charitable Trust, Barcapel Foundation and the Aurum Charitable Trust.

Throughout the year, we continued to receive equally generous support from other long-standing partners.

Our corporate partners also started the year with huge generosity. At the very start of the year Next helped to raise funds and profile through their ‘bouquet of the month’, and early 2013 also saw the beginning of an exciting new partnership with Aspen.

Having launched the City Committee at the end of 2012, we held our first City Committee Halloween Quiz night in October 2013, which raised almost £25,000.

City Committee Chair, Jojo Sanders, spoke at the event and encouraged guests to support generously – which they did.

The City Committee continues to support Place2Be through events and by raising our profile in its sectors.

Place2Be was involved in two charity trading days this year – one at BGC and one at Bloomberg. Thanks to our wonderful celebrity ambassadors, David Haye, Abi Griffiths and Sara Cox, we raised a staggering £73,000 across these two fun-filled days.

Our 2013 Christmas Carol Concert was an equally special

and star-filled event. With Joan Collins OBE, Joanna Lumley OBE, Sophie Dahl, Jeremy Irons, Nickolas Grace and Abi Griffiths delivering readings and Julian Ovenden treating guests to a special recital, the evening was a perfect celebration of our children, families and schools.

Our challenge events calendar was the most exciting to date, with five London Marathon places and selection as the official London2Brighton charity partner. Most excitingly, we secured an abseil off Broadgate Tower, to take place in September 2014.

Place2Be’s success over the last 20 years has been made possible by the loyal individuals and organisations whose faith in our work and ongoing support enables us to grow our services to reach ever more children.
