LOVE IT WAS NOT With its remarkable documentation and creative execution, LOVE IT WAS NOT is the true story of Helena Citron, who as a prisoner in Auschwitz, carried on a romance with a high-ranking SS officer. Thirty years after liberation, her Nazi captor, Franz Wunsch, is on trial for war crimes with his life on the line. Implored by Wunsch's wife to testify on behalf of the man who saved her and her sister, Helena must make the most difficult decision of her life.

HERE WE ARE Aharon (Shai Avivi, One Week and a Day) thinks he knows what's best for his son, Uri (Noam Imber, Beyond the Mountains and Hills): a routine that favors security over independence, with little room for stress and anxiety. Unfortunately, his ex-wife is much less convinced that living with his aging father is what's best for her son. When a spot opens up at a highly coveted boarding facility, she insists Uri take it. With neither father nor son ready to move on, the pair embark on an impromptu road trip. Could what begins as a way for Aharon to evade the inevitable turn out to be Uri's best path forward?

Anchored by Shai Avivi and Noam Imber's endearing performances, HERE WE ARE is a heartfelt tale of a devoted father emotionally unprepared to let go of his autistic young adult son.

SHTETLERS Travel back in time to the lost world of shtetls Ñ the once predominantly Jewish towns ubiquitous in the 19th century Pale of Settlement and the former Soviet Union before the Holocaust. Only a few shtetls still exist today, all located in the regions of modern Ukraine and Moldova.

Profiling nine shtetlers scattered across the globe but sharing roots in the small, remote villages of the Soviet interior, director Katya Ustinova demonstrates the myriad ways traditional Jewish life has remained entrenched in the regionÕs cultural heritage. With wonder and nostalgia, this artful documentary is a living artifact bearing witness to the last vestiges of Jewish shtetl life.

OUTREMONT AND THE HASIDIM As the ultra-Orthodox community in Outremont continues to grow, so does its tense relations with its non-Jewish neighbors. With some 7,000 Hasidim needing spaces to worship, real estate has become a hot-button issue in the Montreal borough generally regarded as home to Quebec's Francophone elite.

Montreal native Eric R. Scott's thoughtful documentary examines how individuals on both sides of the argument see their roles in fostering understanding and reconciling their grievances. This inspiring story from our northern neighbors reminds us of the transformative power a conversation can have in nurturing dialogue and reconciliation.

MISH-MISH While most Egyptians heard of Walt Disney, few are familiar with the Frenkel Brothers Ñ the three Jewish brothers who pioneered Egyptian cartoon animation in the 1930s and created Mish-Mish Effendi, the ÒMickey Mouse of Egypt.Ó The Frenkel BrothersÕ enterprise began in Alexandria, Egypt, with David drawing cartoons, Shlomo building the machines needed to create their animations, and Herschel taking on the producer role. Humorous and clever, their animated shorts quickly found an enthusiastic audience in both wealthy theatergoers and those watching movies off their rooftops. Unfortunately for the Frenkels, fame and fortune were short-lived. As rising anti-Semitism in Egypt made it unsafe for Jews to live there, the brothers and their animated productions sought refuge in France.

Would the Frenkel brothersÕ dream ever be realized? After nearly being lost to history, the legacy of Herschel, Shlomo, and David Frenkel receives top billing in Tal MichaelÕs delightful new film, MISH-MISH.
