Thanks to the exposure from global streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime, Israeli television has gained tremendous popularity worldwide. Fan-favorites like Fauda, Shtisel, and Unorthodox have transformed Israeli television into must-see television and Israeli TV actors into household names. AUTONOMIES, a welcome addition to IsraelÕs evolving canon of prestige television, is no exception. GPJFF is thrilled to stream the five part TV series in its entirety as part of its 40th anniversary season. From the creators of Shtisel, this gripping dystopian thriller takes place in an alternate version of present-day Israel. After a brutal civil war, the State has separated into two entities: a secular Israeli state with Tel Aviv as its capital and an ultra-Orthodox Autonomy positioned in Jerusalem. A custody battle over the granddaughter of The Rebbe of Kreinitz (Shuli Rand) Ñ a child born into a Haredi family but raised by secular parents Ñ threatens to push the two regions back into an unbridled war. Meanwhile, Broide (Assi Cohen), a wheelerdealer from the Autonomy who smuggles contraband between the two territories, puts his own life in jeopardy when he accepts a job requiring him to kidnap the little girl caught in the maelstrom.
Ingeniously written and expertly acted, this timely tale exploring issues of identity, religion, and personal freedom will have you glued to the screen from start to finish.
