We believe in always doing the right thing first. That’s why the most important aspect of any effective safety program is a sincere commitment by top management. All PJ Dick, Trumbull and The Lindy Group safety professionals hold a BS or MS in Safety.

With an approach that is proactive rather than reactive, PJ Dick, Trumbull and The Lindy Group have become a major innovator of safety programs. Our efforts are continually recognized by industry organizations such as the Associated General Contractors of America, the National Safety Council and the Master Builders’ Association of Western PA.

PJ Dick, Trumbull and The Lindy Group are actively involved in federal and state voluntary compliance programs on select projects. MY SAFETY MEANS EDUCATED EMPLOYEES

Recognizing that a trained workforce is vital to minimizing accidents, we provide all our employees with the training needed to properly and safely perform their jobs. Employees participate in the My Safety Leadership workshop, behavioral-based safety training that encourages discussion and resolution of real-life job scenarios.

Field operations leaders receive between 40 and 100 hours of safety training.

Our Superintendents and Foremen complete the company Safety Leadership Course, OSHA Construction Safety Course, as well as training programs on topics such as fall protection, excavation safety, scaffolding, defensive driving, first aid and CPR. Selected Project Engineers also receive specialized training.

This training is designed to create safety advocates who are empowered to act responsibly and encourage the same behavior in their staff. The result is a team of employees that is knowledgeable, confident and capable of managing safety at the project location.

COMMUNICATION IS KEY

Our leaders know that good communication is one of the best ways to prevent incidents. They conduct daily safety sessions and hold comprehensive safety talks and meetings.

Additionally, to prepare for real-world experience, highly participatory workshops engage employees in a variety of safety-related scenarios.

• Always work safely.

• Know and follow Safety Policy, Life-Saving Rules, Worksite Safety Rules and Safe Work Practices.

• Always check work areas for hazards prior to work.

• Always stop work if hazards are not controlled in the work area.

• Always report unsafe actions and conditions to their supervisor.

• Never attempt work if they are unqualified or physically unable to perform.

• Always wear required Personal Protective Equipment.

• Never work under the influence of illegal drugs or alcohol.

• Discuss with supervisor any prescription or overthe-counter drugs that many affect their work.

• Never engage in workplace violence, harassment or horseplay.

Protect yourself against a fall when working at heights.

Always keep your body in a safe position/location.

Do not work or walk under a suspended load.

Do not work in an unprotected excavation.

No alcohol or drugs while working or driving.

When driving or operating equipment, always wear your seat belt, and rest at the first sign of fatigue.

Obtain authorization before entering a confined space.

Always isolate or control hazardous sources of energy.

Obtain authorization before overriding or disabling a safety device.

Do not smoke when refueling or handling flammable substances.

MY SAFETY STARTS WITH A PLAN

Before each project begins, supervisors follow a comprehensive Activity Hazard Analysis (AHA) to identify all potential and existing hazards and eliminate them before the job commences. From that assessment they develop and communicate a site-specific Safety Plan and share all pertinent safety information with each site employee.

The Penguins were very proud of the successful safety record on the CONSOL Energy Center project. We owe this success to the safety plan that was implemented by the PJ Dick construction safety team.”

Daily Safety Plans are provided to all site personnel at the start of each shift so all personnel are informed and prepared for any potential or existing risk.

Weekly Safety Snapshots and Site Safety Checklists assist supervisors in recognizing, managing, as well as trending safe and unsafe behaviors on the work site. Supervisors complete a weekly observation of the work site and record any safe or unsafe behaviors relating to current work being performed.

Supervisors conduct weekly meetings to communicate all applicable safety information. Meeting details are documented and include all current employee signatures.

MY SAFETY ALWAYS IMPROVES

While PJ Dick, Trumbull and The Lindy Group strive to meet Goal Zero accidents by having the most comprehensive safety education, resources and support available, accidents may occur.

Project supervisors are trained to swiftly and smartly handle every accident event.

They are trained to provide CPR and emergency first aid. They have at the ready a Nurse Triage Help Line to assess and determine the best course of action (Med Express, ER, or simple first aid).

All accident data is gathered in a comprehensive Record of Injury and Illness form which includes vital information on the root cause of the accident and potential Corrective Actions.

This comprehensive Incident Report is shared and discussed with employees. These “Lessons Learned” help minimize similar events in the future.
