get up & go Get Up & Go is an activity and errand-transportation service for older adults who no longer drive. Programs without transportation are open to all adults. Programs are free for Get Up & Go regular participants and PJCC members and $4 for the public. A low cost lunch is served at 12:00 pm.

Wednesday, August 10 Code: 29300 Stephen Foster was the “architect” of American popular music—influencing a wide variety of composers such as George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Leadbelly and Bob Dylan. Actors/singers Stephen Gill and Karl Frazen present musical and historical highlights of the short and tragic life of this American icon.

Every Monday, Tuesday and Friday, Get Up & Go provides transportation within San Mateo County for non-driving older adults for medical and personal appointments, shopping and other destinations. Shared-ride service is available for $5 round trip or $3 one-way. Volunteer escorts are available. Reservations are required no later than the Wednesday of the week prior to the date of service.

JULY FOOD FOR THOUGHT Women as Mothers and Friends 2:00 pm • PJCC Board Room (July 25 Classroom AB) Free M / $4 P* per session • Code: 29285 July 11: The Monster Within— The Hidden Side of Motherhood In our child-centered culture, women often strive to be perfect mothers. When conflicts arise between the needs of mothers and the needs of their children, they are ashamed and frightened when they experience the inevitable negative thoughts or feelings toward their offspring. Author Dr. Barbara Almond discusses the spectrum of maternal feelings and behaviors and the measures that can be taken to increase tolerance of the difficulties of motherhood. Dr. Almond, a psychotherapist in private practice, is Emeritus Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford University and the mother of three sons.

July 25: Aspects of Sisterhood Author Meg Waite Clayton talks about the importance of friends supporting each other as described in her novels The Wednesday Sisters (a national best seller) and The Four Ms. Bradwells. She writes with intelligence, wisdom and humor about women’s friendships.

August 29: Oscar Hammerstein—Lyricist Hammerstein was the poet of Broadway who changed the course of musicals by working with Jerome Kern on Show Boat and with Richard Rodgers on Oklahoma.

He also worked with many other composers and was mentor to the young Stephen Sondheim.

Meg Waite Clayton is a lawyer who worked for an international law firm before turning her skills to writing novels. Her stories and essays have appeared in Runner’s World, Writer’s Digest and literary magazines.

Joe Marchi is an enthusiastic and popular expert on the history of the American Musical. He is founder and former director of the Center of the American Musical at Canada College.

The star of stage and screen returns to Berkeley Rep to tell her tale in an irreverent and entertaining new show that’s full of surprises and songs. Expect another breathtaking performance from the lady who won the Oscar, the Tony, the Grammy and two Emmys. Artistic Director Tony Taccone makes his debut as a playwright with this touching script, drawing on decades of experience developing shows with leading solo artists, and he hands the reins for this world premiere to a renowned director: David Galligan. We begin at the Museum of Modern Art with a docent tour of The Steins Collect: Matisse, Picasso and the Parisian AvantGarde. After a no-host lunch, we proceed to the nearby Contemporary Jewish Museum to view Seeing Gertrude Stein: Five Stories. This exhibition focuses on Stein’s life from the end of WWI through WWII. It explores her public personae, lifestyle, relationships, US tour, and her life in France.

HAPA in concert

Do you love to sing? Come join our new PJCC Community Chorus. We’re looking for all voice parts.

High school students on up. We’ll sing everything from classical to international folk songs with some musical theater thrown in for fun. No musical training is necessary, just the ability to carry a tune.
