From Our Principal Dear Alumni and Friends of CBA, Welcome to the Summer 2012 edition of CBA’s Alumni Newsletter! The theme of this newsletter is “traditions”…those practices, ever-living memories and continued events that link the past to the present. Throughout the following pages, you will be reminded of the many great past traditions of CBA that continue to be shared among alumni of all ages and passed along to our present-day student body. In addition to these memorable practices, you will also read about the more recent activities and events that continue to make CBA Central New York’s greatest Catholic school….in the long-time “tradition” of the De La Salle Christian Brothers. One of the enduring traditions here at CBA extends back more than three centuries to the custom of the Brothers (and now, our Lasallian partners and students) of concluding every prayer session with the expression “Live Jesus in our hearts…forever!” This prayer comes directly from St. John Baptist de La Salle and is found in the earliest versions of the Brothers’ Rule composed for the Brothers by the Founder. This simple, yet memorable prayer unites the past with the present and forms a bond of unity among all Lasallians throughout the world who recite the prayer including its “answer” in many languages. I hope that you will enjoy reading the following pages and reuniting yourself with memories of the past while updating yourself with the many wonderful happenings at CBA during the last school year! St. John Baptist de La Salle…Pray for Us! Live Jesus in Our Hearts…Forever!

Sincerely,

Brother Joseph Jozwiak, FSC Principal

Traditions Stand the Test of Time A message from John Sindoni, AFSC ’63 In its distinguished existence which now spans over 110 years, Christian Brothers Academy has enjoyed a rich tradition of excellence in all aspects of student life. The characteristics of a Brothers’ education have been preserved and passed on to students attending CBA and can be readily observed in the admirable characteristics of its current students. Development of strong moral and spiritual values coupled with a compelling desire for involvement with the needy in our community are part of the CBA fabric. The hallmarks of excellence in academics and meaningful participation in extra-curricular activities augment the moral and spiritual values and contribute to a tradition of excellence beyond graduation. CBA proudly recognizes alums who have distinguished themselves in so many ways in the Syracuse community and beyond. It is this pride in our past and faith in our future which embodies the CBA tradition. I feel extremely fortunate to have received the education offered at CBA, and even more blessed that our six children could attend and graduate from the school. A notable and long-lasting characteristic is the discipline that still pervades the halls of the school. This was ever present in my years at CBA, which straddled two years at Willow Street and the move to the Randall Road campus. And while the number of Brothers in the school has diminished, the sense of order and structure remains. It certainly is fair to say that my college years were made easier because of the intensity of the curriculum at CBA. Our children also experienced that structure – the expected hours of study outside the classroom provided a sturdy basis for managing the rigors of college life. My conversations with various college admission officers revealed their recognition of CBA’s reputation for preparing its students, our children included, for the next level. Those exemplary traditions of CBA are ever present today, as we continue to hear in the classrooms: “St. John Baptist de la Salle…Pray for us. Live Jesus in our hearts…Forever.” Cil and John Sindoni

Your Alumni Association Your CBA Alumni Association is hard at work The Christian Brothers Academy Alumni Association is a group of dedicated alums who meet monthly to plan, organize, host and promote alumni events throughout the year. Funds raised at the golf tournament are spent as follows: • • • • • • •

The Alumni Association Distinguished Senior Award ($1,000) 4 scholarships for son or daughter of alumni, one in each grade, 9-12 ($500 each) The Purple and Gold Award and reception Homecoming Tailgate The Alumni Memorial Mass & Breakfast Alumni athletic contests for football, soccer, basketball, baseball and lacrosse The Robert Carsky ’73 Scholarship Run

her wings of gold " 2012 Distinguished Senior Award More than 20 qualified seniors applied for the 2012 Distinguished Senior Award. Each demonstrated excellence in areas such as service, athletics, academics and overall zeal for the CBA experience. Five finalists were selected and interviewed by the Award Committee. While the selection was difficult among such highly qualified seniors, the Alumni Association was proud to honor Miranda Magley as the 2012 recipient of the Distinguished Senior Award. Miranda will be a freshman at SUNY Geneseo this fall and plans to pursue a degree in education.

2012 Scholarship The CBA Alumni Association reviewed a dozen application essays from 8th grade students who are sons or daughters of CBA alumni. Each student wrote about their impressions of the CBA experience. David Paris ’16 was selected to receive the 2012 Alumni Association Scholarship for $500 which he will receive for the four years of high school.

Brett Keegan spent the spring semester in Egypt where he taught English as a Second Language to Coptic Catholic seminarians at St. Leo’s Seminary in Ma’adi, a suburb of Cairo. The program had 16 students, most of them in their mid 20s. Brett was studying Arabic at school, so he knew some of the language, but the time was a learning experience. In addition to learning the language better, he really fell in love with the culture and made some great connections with the students. They lived, ate, played, and worshiped with the seminarians in addition to the classes, so they had plenty of time to practice English and got to learn about their lives and the culture. Brett also did some sightseeing, but the election made this difficult because of unrest and the threat of violence.

Peter Merola finished his freshman year at St. Leo’s where he earned a 4.0 average for the year. He was also picked by his freshman class of over 1200 as “Freshman of the Year”. 2011

Here’s Why: Lasallian Legacy Society Members Share Their Reasons

Jan Klapetzky ’63 “I feel the education and goal setting skills I received at CBA, both inside and outside the classroom, were a major factor in my subsequent academic and professional success. By remembering CBA in my estate, I wanted to express my gratitude for the benefits I received and help CBA in its mission of providing quality education to other deserving young men and women.”

Dr. Benedict Alibrandi '57 accepts his LLS certificate from John Sindoni AFSC '63. “Including CBA in my will is a nice way to say thank you. In fact, with all that the Brothers have given me, there is not enough money to say thank you. By becoming a member of the Lasallian Legacy Society, we can ensure that CBA will continue to be the leader in Catholic education in Central New York for future generations.”

Mrs. Antoinette Pitonzo & Mark Pitonzo ’76

Msgr. William Young ’62 “I was looking at my will and other such stuff and I wanted to give something on a higher level. I can never know just when my ‘time’ here in this part of the Kingdom will come to an end. I would be foolish to wait any longer and we Brothers are not foolish (at least we’re not supposed to be). It was time for me to practice better the stewardship I preach.”

Antoinette and Mark have joined the Lasallian Legacy Society to say “thank you.” With a simple change of beneficiary on a life insurance policy for Mark and a gift bequest from Antoinette, they have made their legacy gifts to Christian Brothers Academy. These gifts enroll them as members of the Lasallian Legacy Society. Mark says it’s a good feeling knowing their gifts will someday help future generations and will stand as a permanent legacy for a lifelong commitment to CBA. "I think it’s something everyone connected to CBA should consider.”

Did you know…a bequest just takes a simple designation in your will or trust and costs nothing during your lifetime? It’s easy and revocable if your situation changes. Please consider remembering CBA in your will, contact Patti Callahan at 315-446-5960 ext 1139 or at pjcallahan@cbasyracuse.org for further information.

Since 1680, educational institutions in more than 80 countries have been influenced by the vision and innovative spirit of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, the Founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and the patron saint of teachers. Lasallian Education centers on Catholic values and personal relationships, emphasizing academic excellence, faith formation, inclusion, respect for the individual, service and social justice. A Lasallian Education strives to enrich each student’s cultural, intellectual, physical, social and spiritual development.

Engineering CBA is pleased to announce a significant advancement in the computer science curriculum this fall. Beginning in September, CBA will offer an engineering course that will allow students to visualize, create and simulate data in both 2D AutoCAD and 3D design environments. Engineering, Drawing and Design will use Autodesk Inventor, a hands-on, computer-based interface which allows students to build their skills and understanding of the subject using the same tools used by university students and industry professionals. To suit the graphics-intensive software, CBA has installed a new Mac lab that sports 25 cutting-edge Apple iMac’s so students can appropriately operate the software. The new Mac lab and the software are the result of a generous grant awarded to the school for technology and learning advancement. Taught by Mrs. Martha Ponge, the course will be largely comprehensive, offering a wide variety of concepts such as dimensional drawing, spatial perspective, pictorial and orthographic drawings. Using these skills, students will be afforded the opportunity to apply decision-making skills to design problems through application and practice.

Lenten Drive Last spring, CBA chose to support Vera House and McMahon Ryan Child Advocacy Center in their annual Lenten Drive. Organized and administered by student Peer Ministry leaders, the objectives of the drive were to raise both awareness and funding for two worthy local organizations. The Social Justice division of Peer Ministry went to work planning assemblies, displays and incentives for students to donate to the cause. The Vera House Silent Witness Exhibit, which told the stories of a dozen area domestic violence victims who lost their lives to domestic violence, lined the hallway in the Fine Arts Wing from February 29 until March 15. The exhibit brought reality to an issue that is difficult to discuss. The effort concluded on April 3 during Holy Week, prior to CBA’s spring recess. A grand total of over $5,500 was raised, along with awareness of the critical issues of domestic violence and child abuse.

A message from The CBA Booster Club: We support the school’s athletes (all 600 of them!) Please consider joining the club. Membership fees are $30 per family. Once you are a member you are eligible to purchase a family pass for $30 which allows your family free access to all

Brother Gabe: always a favorite! CBA girls varsity softball won its first sectional championship in school history.

Softball Champs For the first time ever, members of the varsity softball team at Christian Brothers Academy are Section III champions! Coached by Greg Jewett, the team defeated Altmar-Parish-Williamstown, 9-3 on June 2. A primarily young team, CBA relied on the likes of seniors Molly O’Brien, Kelly Bewley, and Claire Gollegly to secure the title win. Team asset Jordan Sheridan ’13 locked down the game, allowing only nine hits and striking out eight batters. The “Lady Brothers” had a great season, finishing 14-7.

CBA Crowd at NYSSMA In May, 32 music students at CBA participated in the annual NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) solo and small ensemble festival held at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. Students performed scales, a sight-reading piece as well as a prepared solo with difficulty of levels 1-6 in front of an adjudicator for a score. Seven CBA students received a perfect score!

Through the Eyes (and Heart) of a Volunteer

• •

BY:

Kathy Murphy Pietrafesa

I like to be busy and I like to have a purpose. I enjoyed my career immensely but it required a fair amount of traveling which impacted on time spent at home. Fortunately, we were in a position where I could stay home with Sarah and Richard. And there were lots of hours in the days to fill! So, although, I never set out to volunteer, it became a natural progression as my children went through elementary school. It also gave me a platform where I could teach them by example some things I think are really important: the value and importance of giving back, helping others, meeting deadlines, working with others AND we shared the same goal at CBA, making new friends! I often say we encourage and gently push our 7th graders through the front door, saying confidently to them, “don’t worry, it will be fun, you will love it, you will meet new friends” and then we, the adults, retreat to our cars as quickly as possible! So we all shared the same fears… will they like me, will I do a good job? So, I told my children and myself, we will all make new friends. I checked the volunteer box on the sheet that came home in the back to school summer mailing and we were off!

“CBA is a wonderful institution filled with adults who believe in kids, and in my world, that’s the secret…As their “village”, the CBA community embraces students and sets them on a course to draw out all the miraculous things they have to offer this world. CBA is the foundation my children need to change the world.” ~ Kathy Murphy It has been a more rewarding and enjoyable experience than any job I ever held. CBA was the educational choice for our children. We wanted them to have strong academics combined with the intimacy of everyone knowing who you are. CBA guided them, helped them, encouraged them and provided the perfect environment for them to thrive and become strong young men and women. They survived the bumps of high school, made some best friends along the way, and I couldn’t have asked for more. I became more involved in Parents Club activities and met a wonderful group of people who I am glad to call my friends today. We worked hard together, shared parenting tips along the way, held our breath during midterms and finals, and ultimately became a part of the “village” for our children. Like everything else, the hardest part is the first step. Not everyone is able to share the time that I had, but, there is room and a job for everyone. We worked hard to seek out parents, and to match the jobs with their time availability and any other constraints. It is definitely a challenge to find time to volunteer, but my advice is always: just do a little (after all you can always do more!). You will be delighted to meet your children’s friends and their families. It can be sports, the arts, faculty luncheons, father/daughter or mother/son communion breakfast and a host of many other activities, they all help CBA do the very best job they can at nurturing our children.

I was fortunate enough to work closely with the students in the Class of 2012 and am amazed at the talents, abilities and strength of each and every senior in the class. I have no doubt that we can leave the world in their hands, and they will make it a better place. They are a class filled with caring, loving, funny and compassionate young people who will be tomorrow’s leaders. I am sure the same can be said of virtually every CBA alum. The most telling moment was graduation when lots and lots of tears were shed. I cried because my daughter will be moving on and growing up. I cried because I will be moving on! I will miss my friends, our meetings, the hard work and the sigh of relief when all goes well. So, I encourage every family to check the box, volunteer a few times until you find the fit, and lead by example for your children. I promise it will be a wonderful experience!

Sarah Pietrafesa ’12 with her mom, Kathy Murphy Pietrafesa. Kathy Murphy Pietrafesa, CBA mom and volunteer extraordinaire, offers her thoughts on volunteering at Christian Brothers Academy. “Murphy” served as Parents Club President, perhaps the school’s most challenging volunteer role, during the 2008-2009 school year. One of many contributions she made to the school was to document each Parent’s Club event and activity to provide consistency and ease of transition each year. She is also known for inspiring volunteers by asking, “What do you like to do?” and finding a place and time for each person to contribute.
