Good Grief!

CBA Grad Makes Directorial Debut in Junior High Musical by Caroline K. Reff Like any true “theatre kid,” Andrea Lazipone Jacobs ’01 fondly remembers the name of every production she was in while a student at Christian Brothers Academy. From “Our Town” to “Crazy for You,” Jacobs’ years on the stage are some of her fondest high school memories. Recently, she helped make new memories for a new group of CBA students, as she returned to her alma mater to direct the school’s first junior high musical, “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown,” on December 3, 4 and 5, 2010. A graduate of Syracuse University and now employed as a youth minister for Holy Cross Parish in Dewitt, NY, Jacobs has a special affection for the middle school set and thinks her ministry helps her relate to the 7th and 8th grade actors and actresses. “My work helps me know how to talk to them, how to get their attention – and how to listen to them, too, which is really important,” she said. “I really enjoy working with them. Every day, these kids just make me laugh.” Jacobs and her twin sister, Maria Lazipone Podbelski ’01, grew up in a theatrical family. Both parents loved theater, and her dad is a long-time member of a barbershop quartet and select choir. Show tunes were often heard in the Lazipone home, and Jacobs grew up singing and playing piano. As a CBA student, Jacobs and her sister participated in the CBA select choir and eagerly anticipated performing in the high school musical each year under the direction of Eugene Moretti and Robert Caraher, who are still at the helm of the CBA high school musicals today.

When CBA decided to put on a junior high musical, it was, in fact, Moretti, who recruited Jacobs as director. “I had been helping out with the musicals at Jamesville-Dewitt Middle School, and I would often stop by CBA on my way home to see what musical Mr. Moretti was working on. We kept in touch, and he knew I was still interested in theater,” said Jacobs, who admits one of the toughest parts of her director’s job was getting used to calling her former mentor “Gene.” Jacobs spent much of the fall of 2010 working with a group of about 30 students on “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown.” This day-in-the-life of the Peanuts gang required singing, dancing, acting, and hours and hours of rehearsal times. Through it all, she enjoyed watching so many of the students blossom. “Having a middle school show is such a great opportunity for the kids and gives them a lot of experience,” she said. “Theater has to do with finding the courage to get on stage and test your limits. You just can’t keep to yourself when you’re doing a show. It’s a real team effort.” “This cast had a lot of talent, and the kids worked extremely hard,” added Jacobs, who lives in Syracuse with her husband, Maarten and one-year-old son, Sam. “It was my goal from the beginning that the audience would not think ‘Oh, that was good – for a junior high production.’ I wanted it to stand up to any high school musical performance. My experience with ‘Charlie Brown’ was a great way to connect with the community, get to know some awesome kids, and share the talents I learned at CBA with those who are making memories of their own on the stage now.”

CBA Junior High Presents “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown”

Last fall, the CBA girls tennis team won its second consecutive Section III Class B Title. Olivia Messineo and the doubles team of Becky Scullin and Nicole Kalhorn represented CBA in the State Tournament. Our girls swimming and diving team won the Section III Class A Championship for the third consecutive year. They outscored second place Fayetteville Manlius by nearly 70 points. They also won the OHSL Freedom Division Championship for the tenth time in the last twelve years. Destiny Cerlanek, Zoe McCauley, Ruthie Speidel, Kathryn Coughlin, Maggie Fletcher, Lexi McCauley and Summer Schmitt represented CBA in the State Swimming Championships. Our boys golf team, competing in the fall for the fifth year, won the OHSL Freedom Division Championship and will compete for the Sectional Championship in the spring. The Varsity football squad won the Section III Class AA I Division Championship. They advanced to the Sectional Championship game where they suffered a heartbreaking 13 -10 loss to Baldwinsville. The girls soccer team won the OHSL Freedom Division Championship and our boys team finished second in league play. Our cross country teams fared well with junior Brendan Smith advancing to the State Federation Championships. But what we feel is most important and equally as impressive is that over 420 students participated on one of our fall sports teams. During the winter season, girls varsity basketball won the OHSL Freedom Division Championship for the fourth consecutive season. Boys basketball finished with a 16 – 4 record and placed second in the league. Both teams advanced to the Section III Class AA Semifinals. Varsity volleyball also finished in second place in the league and advanced to the Section III Semifinals. Three of our winter teams are combined with Jamesville Dewitt: hockey, boys swimming and wrestling. CBA/JD hockey advanced to the sectional playoffs and was awarded the sportsmanship award for their division as voted on by league coaches. Boys swimming again won the OHSL Championship and Cole Speidel and Josh Lacey represented CBA in the State Championships. Boys Wrestling, competing as an independent for the second year, continued to improve. Aaron Benedict and J.T. Romagnoli both won sectional championships and represented CBA in the State Championships. Next season the team will be a full-fledged member of the OHSL. Five of our student athletes announced their intentions to participate in intercollegiate athletics at Division I schools for the 2011 – 2012 school year. In a ceremony on February 3rd, Mary Fletcher (Siena – Golf), Alexis Koval (Syracuse – Soccer), and football players Greg Thomson (Tulane), Tyler Hamblin (Harvard), and Vince Russo (Colgate) made their official commitments. Congratulations to these young men and women for their tremendous accomplishments.

The Junior High cast for You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown

Happiness is…putting on the first ever junior high musical at Christian Brothers Academy. At least that’s what the cast and crew of “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown” thought when they presented the show on December 3, 4 and 5, 2010, to sell-out crowds in De La Salle Hall in the W. Dennis Owen Fine Arts Wing. Directed by Andrea Jacobs ’01, the production represented a day-in-the-life of the Peanuts gang, as Charlie Brown vied for the attention of the little red-haired girl, Lucy assessed her crabbiness, Linus kept an eye on his beloved blanket, and Snoopy counted the minutes until suppertime. The cast of 22 7th and 8th graders kept the audience entertained with lively songs and dances throughout the performance. Lead characters included Robert George ’16 as Charlie Brown; Molly Reff ’15 as Lucy Van Pelt; Sal Zarrella ’16 as Schroeder; Caeleb Fox-Lee ’16 as Linus Van Pelt; Marielle LaBerge ’16 as Sally Brown; and Sydney Schwab ’15 as Snoopy. Music for the show was performed live by Dan Pugh ’11 and Tim Erhart ’12. “Having a middle school show is such a great opportunity for the kids and gives them a lot of experience,” said Jacobs. “Theater has to do with finding the courage to get on stage and test your limits. It’s a real team effort.”

Valerie Stedman: 2011 Lasallian Educator of the Year Each school year, the CBA faculty select a teacher who exemplifies the ideals of St. John Baptist de La Salle. Eligible nominees must have been a Lasallian educator for at least five years, be actively involved in fostering the mission of Lasallian education, and demonstrate an enthusiasm for the Lasallian tradition. Known for her deep spirituality and faith, Valerie Stedman has been on the faculty at CBA since 2004, teaching health to 7th graders, as well as health-related electives to junior and seniors. She is the coach of CBA’s Rite Aid Drug Quiz team, which has placed in the top four in the state for the past four years under her direction. In addition, Stedman is the statistician for the CBA Boys 7th grade basketball team and recently set up the HELPS room, a mentoring area where older students can assist junior high students. “The best thing you can say about Val is that she never gives up on a child,” said faculty member Gretchen Pledger. “She makes it her life mission to give each and every child she meets the tools to reach his or her greatest potential and won’t accept any less or any excuses. She treats every child as if he/she were her own, and kids know that. She has all the pieces it takes to make a great teacher – knowledge, warmth, compassion and the understanding of what it’s like to be a young adult, as well as the firmness and structure to help give students guidelines that allow them to become successful both academically and personally.”

Self Assessment: A Worthwhile Effort

For a full year, CBA prepared for its Validation Team visit from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools (MSA). This visit took take place November 30-Dec. 3, 2010. During the visit, a team of five educators from schools in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania conducted an in-depth assessment of CBA’s adherence to twelve

CBA Board Chair Paul Drescher (right) talks with faculty member Eric Knuth at the reception for the Middlestates team in December “Standards of Accreditation” required by MSA as a part of its reaccreditation process. In preparing for the visit, CBA conducted a self study involving assessment of its planning processes, growth, and provision of a quality education. In looking forward, we have formulated Objectives related to student performance which aid in the formation of a planning and growth ethic. While the MSA visit has taken much time and effort on the part of staff, faculty members, and the Board, it assists us in focusing on our continual efforts to live our Mission.

of CBA administrators, trustees, faculty, and students; producing the final report; and providing for the visiting team during their time at our school. Moving forward, the school will continue to measure and monitor progress for its objectives. This fall, Mr. Todd Benware and Mr. Vincent Horan will coordinate a Lasallian Assessment as recommended by the Brother’s District of Eastern North America (DENA) during which time further self evaluation will be done as it relates to our Lasallian mission.

We are especially grateful to Mrs. Marijane Finlay for guiding the process; overseeing the school’s internal Middle States committee

Alumni

Dear Fellow Alumni, As a proud member of the CBA Class of 1988, I am thrilled to be on board as the new Associate Director of Alumni Affairs and Annual Giving. Having spent 16 years with the Longhouse Council Boy Scouts of America, most recently as the Chief Operating Officer, I bring extensive experience in executive management, operations management, fundraising and alumni relations. My very first day on the job in February, I connected with several buddies from the track and football teams via facebook, phone, and email. Since then I have been reaching out to many alums from many different classes. To see Buddy, Brother Gabe, Kevin Conroy and Randy Kinn on my first day was like I never left and it felt like home. I am excited about the new ideas we are pursuing in the Alumni Association such as the new format for All Alumni Reunion weekend. I am also responsible for securing gifts for the Annual Fund. Having worked the phones for my class a couple of times, I know what it’s like to be on both ends of that phone line. We will continue to expand the phonathon program because that is how we get our best response and the best results: through the personal connections from classmates.

And all of the efforts around Annual Fund are definitely worth it! Being here at the school, I get to meet and work with some of the students. Let me tell you, they are great kids, coming from all kinds of backgrounds and going to prestigious colleges. Your gifts to the Annual Fund help keep them here by supporting the financial aid awards as well as other operating expenses like teachers’ salaries, utilities, and classroom needs. So thank you to all who have given this year to this important effort! I am looking forward to getting to meet and work with many of you as we continue to spread our wings at alumni regional events. We have added three new cities to our Alumni Reception tour: Greensboro, NC; Atlanta, GA; and West Palm Beach, FL. I cannot wait to visit with all of you.

See you around campus. Go Brothers!

1st Annual LA Alumni Reception and its mission transcends age and distance. Mark Miller ’70 suggested the possibility of starting an LA area Alumni Association, and welcomes input and participation from any interested SoCal alum. Reed Harris, an alumnus from De La Salle Collegiate in Warren, MI, attended at Brother Joe’s invitation, and the recounting of his stories made it clear that a ‘Brother’ is a ‘Brother,’ even on the ‘Left Coast.’ Michael Corcoran ’67 joined the group all the way from Springville, CA, driving in rush hour traffic! He is most anxious to encourage current CBA students to find a ‘home’ in the LA area, and would be willing to assist with college and career mentoring for any brave ‘Brothers’ who are willing to travel cross-country to follow their dreams.

Principal Br. Joseph Jozwiak, FSC was joined by an enthusiastic and intimate group of Los Angeles area alums and friends for the inaugural CBA in LA Alumni Reception on Thursday, November 11th. Thanks to the generosity of Dr. Richard Gray ’73, the revelers were treated to a delicious assortment of hors d’oeuvres and beverages, while enjoying the panoramic views of downtown LA from their room on the 54th floor of the Wells Fargo Tower – home of the City Club on Bunker Hill. Richard is President of a fellow “Brothers’ school,” La Salle High School in Pasadena, CA, and a member of the City Club. All in attendance were pleasantly surprised to learn that our database lists close to 90 CBA alums who are living and working in Southern California. As those gathered connected and chatted about their experiences at CBA, it was quickly apparent that their shared love of the school

Our sincerest gratitude to Richard Gray ’73 for hosting and coordinating this special reception and to Jim Barksdale ’63, Mike Barksdale ’59, and Ralph Deppisch ’64 for their assistance with planning and getting the word out. Alumni Basketball 2010 On December 28th the esteemed Brothers basketball alums gathered on the hardwoods once more for a feisty game. First up, the lady Brothers played a game against the current girls varsity squad. It was a great matchup of wisdom vs. youth as the graduates did their best against the well oiled youngsters who are coached by John Niland ’67. The men’s game was another story – with plenty of coaxing, prodding, and poking from the sidelines by the always entertaining commentator Tom Niland ’65 (who coaches the girls JV team, alongside Joe Leone ’68.) After Coach Buddy Wleklinski ’75 passed out t-shirts, dividing the teams “evenly,” over 20 alumni faced off: purple vs. gold. Amazingly the scoreboard repeatedly reset itself to a tie score, but in the end, the purple team was victorious. At the conclusion of the game, alumni and their families gathered in Callahan gym for refreshments where they re-hashed the most recent contest, as well as those from years past.

Call me…

The most comprehensive and successful Alumni Annual Fund Phonathon ever was conducted over 11 sessions between October 25th and November 10th. Eighty-two alums representing 28 classes made more than 900 phone calls to their classmates asking for support for the 2010-2011 Annual Fund. This year’s appeal focused on the significant need for financial aid to ease the burden on our students and their families during these challenging economic times. These dedicated and tenacious callers were able to collect more than $27,000 in gifts and pledges over a 3 week period! The phonathon process begins in September, when ‘Class Agents’ come to CBA to sign letters to their classmates in advance of the calling sessions. More than 2600 of these personalized letters were mailed in October and November to inform alums about how the Annual Fund supports the needs of the school and the students, and to set the stage for the phone calls. Follow-up letters were sent to all alums, whether contact was made or not.

Thanks to the generosity of so many individuals who responded to the compelling message highlighting the critical need for financial aid support, our Annual Fund coffers are significantly more robust than last year’s. But we still have a way to go to achieve our Annual Fund goal for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. It is our hope that as many alums as possible will contribute, at all levels, as alumni participation in the Annual Fund is crucial to the sustainability and success of CBA. In addition to garnering fiscal support for CBA, these calling sessions provide a unique opportunity for alumni to reconnect with their classmates, and to relive ‘old times.’ Year after year, alumni callers report that this interaction is as enjoyable and satisfying for them as the success of their fund-raising efforts… and the delicious pizza and wings! If you are interested in helping us out with next year’s phonathon, please contact the CBA Development office at: (315) 446-5960 x1122 or development@cbasyracuse.org.
