CBA’s New Color – Green? Christian Brothers Academy is participating in some ‘green’ activities in order to promote environmental responsibility in and out of the classrooms. The Science Department will be reinstating environmental science to its curriculum for the 2010-2011 academic year. In addition, a 160 square foot greenhouse will be installed, with 7th graders responsible for all planning and set up, as part of their Science Fair projects, with the goal of developing plans to reduce the production of any and all waste. The Greenhouse Project will focus on reuse and recycling, and the entire CBA community is invited to donate old plant containers and gardening tools that would otherwise be thrown away for use in the project. The greenhouse, which will be located near the fine arts wing, will hopefully one day provide plants for holiday decorations and future fundraising sales. Science teacher, Jason Meany, is coordinating the project. Art teacher, Bobbi Petrocci, is working on a related project, the School Sculpture Garden. Utilizing a MAC Grant, she is reaching out to students, parents, faculty, and staff to design, dig, and plant a native, organic, low-maintenance garden to be used to house permanent and temporary sculpture by students and professional artists. Her hope is that the space will attract birds and butterflies; provide a peaceful environment to inspire creativity and reflection; and an exhibit space to draw the public to participate in gardening and exhibitions. Students produced glass and ceramic mosaic stepping stones which will be installed in the garden, along with wildflowers.

Heard in the Halls Summer ’10 CBA Students Attend Lasallian Convocation on Children’s Rights at UN Submitted by Caroline K. Reff All children should be protected from work that is dangerous, have the right to good quality health care, clean water and nutritious food, not be forced to join the army, be given special care and support if they have a disability, have the right to relax and play. (Excerpted from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child) While most of us take these rights for granted, many around the world do not, as children in every country – even the United States – are subjected to violence, abuse, and lack of care. To raise awareness of this worldwide problem, the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, United States-Toronto Region, invited students from Lasallian schools across North America to the Lasallian Convocation on the Rights of the Child, April 25-27, 2010, at the United Nations in New York City. Joining the convocation of approximately 140 students was a group of 12 from Christian Brothers Academy, Syracuse, and two faculty members, Maureen Lasda and Patrick Mullaney. All have a special interest in learning more about children’s rights violations in the hopes of bringing back information to their community and raising awareness at CBA. “I attended because I was interested in helping my community in a different way,” said Patrick Mahar ’12 of the experience. “I want to take back what I learned to my family and my church to help settle this problem. I didn’t know how many children were abused, and I was really surprised by the statistics on things like child trafficking. Helping this cause makes me feel better about myself because I’m standing up for something I believe in.” The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) was adopted in 1989. Since then, only two countries – the United States and Somalia—have not ratified the treaty. The convention emphasizes the rights of children to survive, develop to their full potential, have protection from abuse, discrimination and exploitation; and participate in family, cultural and social life. Having participated in the initial CRC committee 20 years ago, the Christian Brothers found the ideas behind the convention to be complementary to their mission of providing humane and Christian education to the young, especially the poor and marginalized, and have since advocated for the human rights and guiding principles enshrined in the treaty. The convocation marked the continuation of a concrete effort by the Lasallian educational community to partner service activities with justice-oriented advocacy reflective of Lasallian education moving forward in the 21st century. During the convocation, CBA students and their counterparts participated in various activities, presentations, and liturgies revolving around children’s rights. Guest speakers included Archbishop Celestino Migliore, a permanent representative of the Holy See to the United Nations; and Jimmy Briggs, former UNICEF goodwill ambassador and well-known human rights journalist.

A group from Christian Brothers Academy attended the Lasallian Convocation on the Rights of the Child in April. Left to right (front row): Brendan Smith ’12 (Fayetteville), Kristina Wendl ’12 (Manlius); Meaghan Harrington ’12 (Liverpool); Shannon Gross ’12 (Jamesville); (back row): Patrick Mullaney (CBA faculty); Cameron MacPherson ’12 (Syracuse); Becky Scullin ’12 (Liverpool); Emily Baskin ’12 ((Syracuse); Evan Adamo ’12 (Cicero); Patrick Mahar ’12 (Marcellus); Karen Osborn ’12 (Syracuse) and Maureen Lasda (CBA faculty). Missing from the photo but also in attendance at the conference were Tori Brown ’11 (Syracuse) and Nora Hakizimana ’12 (Syracuse).

Students from 8th Grade Religion class participate in making homemade butterflies for ‘The Butterfly Project’ which were sent to The Holocaust Museum in Houston, TX to remember the children who were victims of the Holocaust.

The Butterfly Project While volunteering at Menorah Park with seniors in assisted living, some Jr. High Lasallian members agreed to participate in ‘The Butterfly Project.’ The Holocaust Museum in Houston, Texas is soliciting groups to submit 1,500,000 handmade butterflies to be displayed as part of an exhibition to remember and represent the number of children who perished in the Holocaust. The exhibit is currently scheduled for Spring 2013. Several of the 9th graders carried the project back to CBA, and students from Jr. High Lasallian, religion classes, art classes, and study halls made hundreds of paper butterflies which were sent to Houston in May. For more information on the project as well as suggestions for learning activities for kids to raise awareness about the need for tolerance and the cost of hate please visit: http://www.hmh.org/ed_butterfly1.shtml.

The students also toured the United Nations, met with several ambassadors, attended small group conferences on specific children’s rights topics, and had the opportunity to see some of the popular tourist sites of New York City, including St. Patrick’s Cathedral and NBC’s The Today Show. “It is most encouraging that our students had the interest and enthusiasm to learn more about the ‘Rights of the Child’ initiative,” said CBA Principal Brother Joseph Jozwiak, FSC. “The plight of children in places that abuse the basic rights of young people is tragic and incomprehensible. I am confident that our student representatives to this assembly returned home with an awareness and sensitivity to the reality of less fortunate children, along with a resolve to engage in proactive activities to help ensure this cause be promoted within our own community.” The CBA students are in the early stages of planning a day-long event next fall in conjunction with the International Day for Children. They hope to share some of the alarming information they learned with their classmates, so that they, too, might join the cause and work to end these kinds of human rights violations. “The conference helped promote understanding,” said Brendan Smith ’12. “We learned more about things happening in the world. And, there are things happening right in our own country that people need to be aware of – lack of education, domestic violence, child trafficking, and sex abuse. We hope to raise awareness of these issues in our own school and communities to see what we can do to end it. We can make a difference.”

Current and past Alumni Association Purple & Gold Award honorees gather at the 2010 ceremony: (L to R) Randy Kinn ’74, Msgr. Ronald Bill ’49, John Sindoni ’63, Frank Sacco ’61, Br. Gabriel Fiumano, FSC ’47, Bob Gang ’35, Gary Barnaba, W. Dennis Owen, AFSC ’44, and John Marshall ’67. On March 20, 2010, over 125 alumni, family, previous award winners, and members of the CBA community gathered in La Salle Hall at Christian Brothers Academy to honor the 2010 Alumni Association Purple & Gold Award recipients: Mr. Gary Barnaba and Br. Gabriel Fiumano, FSC ’47. These deserving gentlemen were chosen to receive this prestigious award for their long, dedicated years of service to CBA and its students and for their commitment to the school’s ideals and principles. Gary Barnaba began his forty year tenure at CBA as a wrestling coach in 1969, and has been bringing his talents and energy to the classroom since 1970. Gary served as Athletic Director from 1970-1986 and he has coached varsity wrestling, varsity football, varsity tennis, and freshman basketball. He established football and wrestling summer camps for high school students, and basketball skills camps for elementary students - and Coach B’s camp is still a popular “Summer Sizzle” program. Gary has served as a mentor and benefactor for countless CBA students, assisting them with college applications and serving as a liaison with collegiate coaches. He was honored as the LaSallian Educator for the 1991-1992 academic year. Br. Gabriel Fiumano, FSC ’47 has worked at Christian Brothers’ schools and facilities in DC, Troy, New York City, and Albany, serving as teacher, life coach, and guardian to countless young men. In 1983, Brother Gabe returned to CBA as Campus Minister and member of the faculty. His business course, “Sports and Entertainment Marketing,” has been a popular elective for juniors and seniors and has served as Brother Gabe’s venue for communicating the virtues of a true gentleman. He has been a

devoted and tireless supporter of the school, serving several terms on the Board of Trustees and as treasurer of the Booster Club for many years. His ‘pizza frites’ are a favorite among generations of CBA sports fans. Brother Gabe is a staunch patron of the arts and enthusiastically attends almost all student drama productions, art exhibits, and musical and dance performances. In his acceptance speech, Gary expressed his appreciation and admiration to his wife, Sheila; his sisters; several of his former students; his fellow teachers; and the entire CBA community. He was visibly touched and grateful to have received this honor, noting that it was especially meaningful to be able to ‘share the stage’ with Br. Gabe. Fiumano echoed the sentiment after receiving his award, thanking his family, friends, and colleagues for their support and encouragement – stressing, in his characteristically humble style, that the assembled crowd was especially large, thanks to the popularity of his fellow recipient. Those assembled enjoyed a lovely cocktail reception in the W. Dennis Owen, AFSC ’44 wing, immediately following the ceremony. Several guests then joined the festivities in the main gym for the 21st annual Lasallian Dinner and Auction, elegantly transformed to represent the evening’s theme of Champagne and Chandeliers.

DC Alumni Reception Over a dozen DC area alums and spouses gathered on Wednesday, April 7th at the ‘Back Bar’ of Danny Coleman’s Dubliner Pub for the annual DC reception. The region was experiencing an early blast of summer for the annual Cherry Blossom Festival, with temperatures exceeding 90 degrees. The balmy weather encouraged high tourist turnout, which in turn, led to traffic challenges during the evening of the reception. We are most grateful to our stalwart ‘Brothers’ who fought the crowds to join us at the Dubliner! The revelers enjoyed tasty pub fare and spirits while reminiscing and sharing news. Marianne Oliva ’91 announced her recent engagement and Suzanne and John Kozicki ’62 shared their plans for their upcoming move to Bozeman, Montana to be closer to their new granddaughter, Adele – congratulations and best of luck to all! Barry Maloney ’60, a newcomer to this event, shared CBA memories and stories with the group. Barry was working hard with several of his fellow classmates to plan their 50th Jubilee Reunion weekend, which turned out to be a very successful, memorable event. Thanks to the following DC area alums for sharing their evening with fellow ‘Brothers:’ Bill Allard ’62 Maurice Belanger ’74 Leanor Cimino ’99 Caitlin Holmes ’99 John Kozicki ’62

A warm, sunny evening greeted the 20 or so runners on Friday, April 30th at CBA’s newly installed turf track at Alibrandi Stadium for the annual Carsky Run. The event, which includes a one-lap, ‘fun run,’ is held in honor of Bob Carsky ’73 who was tragically killed in 2004 during a civil war in Africa’s Ivory Coast. Bob was a prominent soil scientist and crop researcher who had spent over two decades working on economic development and agricultural reform in Africa.

Participants included alums, students, and Bob’s family members: Dr. and Mrs. Carsky; his sister Lanie, and her husband, Matt; Their sons, Josh and Matt; Matt’s wife, Jen (who was nine months pregnant); and their 2 year old daughter, Avery. After the run, the group gathered at the center track as Dr. and Mrs. Carsky presented awards to the winners in Bob’s event – Men’s 1500m and Women’s 1600m. Tom Voorheis ’10 is the first CBA runner to receive the award since the event’s inception.

As Bob was a cross country and track star at CBA, his classmates and peers organized the run as a fitting tribute to their friend, shortly after his memorial service in 2004. His parents, Dr. and Mrs. Carsky, established the Robert J. Carsky ’73 scholarship in Bob’s honor. This very special event helps raise funds to support the scholarship and for the newly established Robert J. Carsky Scholarship Fund which helps deserving CBA students who are African refugees or of African descent. Close to $9000 has been raised for the scholarship and fund thus far this year.

Those assembled were treated to delicious pizza and beverages generously donated by Bob Walker ’75 and Franco’s Pizza. Our deepest appreciation to organizers Stephen Bowman ’77 and Dick Driscoll ’74 for their continued support of this event.

Alumni Events Alumni Association Presents the 2010 Distinguished Senior Award Br. Joseph Jozwiak, FSC and Alumni Association President, John Marzocchi ’77, present Kaitlin McIntyre ’10, with the 2010 Alumni Association Distinguished Senior Award at the Commencement ceremony.

The Alumni Association presents the Distinguished Senior Award, annually, to a graduating senior who best represents, ‘an example of Christian Leadership.’ Members of this year’s selection committee were faced with the daunting challenge of reviewing impressive submissions from 21 seniors for the award. After a rigorous application and interview process, the committee chose Kaitlin McIntyre as the 2010 award recipient. Kaitlin was presented with a $1000 scholarship at the Senior Breakfast on May 14th and an engraved plaque during the Commencement ceremony on May 23rd. In addition, as part of the award she will be offered an opportunity to enlist the assistance of the Alumni Association in finding a junior internship in her field of interest. Kaitlin is a confident, well-spoken young woman whose strong intellect, work ethic, and enormous capacity for empathy make her an outstanding choice for this award. In addition to excelling in the classroom, Kaitlin eagerly shared her time and talents to help fellow students and youngsters through her involvement in activities such as, Peer Ministry; Big Brother Big Sister; and peer tutoring. An accomplished athlete, she took her role as Captain of the Varsity softball and bowling teams very seriously, working with underclassmen to adjust to the higher level of play.

She used her strong communication skills and compassion for others in her work as a YMCA and Crouse Hospital volunteer and as a Teen Talk radio host. She made it her business to foster inclusion and tolerance at CBA, circulating throughout the lunchroom and in the hallways, spreading her message of acceptance and optimism. Kaitlin’s letters of recommendation were peppered with adjectives such as, ‘mature,’ ‘responsible,’ ‘inquisitive,’ ‘moral,’ and ‘thoughtful’ – all describing the ideal ‘Christian Leader.’ In addition to receiving this award, Kaitlin was honored in April by the Syracuse Zonta Foundation with the Amelia Earhart Scholarship for her strong academic record and volunteer efforts at Crouse Hospital. She is heading to the University of Texas at Austin this fall and is planning to major in biomedical engineering. She chose the university for its academic programs, diverse population, and the opportunity to be immersed in its ‘big-school spirit.’ The Alumni Association is proud to add Kaitlin to their list of Distinguished Seniors, and wishes her the best of luck and success in her future pursuits.

Alumni Events Class of 1960 Golden Jubilee Reunion Weekend Members of the CBA Class of 1960 reunite to celebrate their 50th Golden Jubilee Anniversary. Seated (L-R): Jim Ashe, Tom Cooney, Duke Kerr, Terry Riley, Pat Farone, Dave Sullivan, Paul Brooks, Dick Deneve, Rev. Louis Canino, Rev. Joseph Phillips. Standing (L-R): Paul Finochio, Jack Clinton, Bud Pare, George Deptula, Denny Ragan, Bill Speno, Paul Premo, Dave Miller, Barry Maloney, Fred Neimeier, Neal McLane, Ray Lovett, Dick Sparrow.

Fifty years have passed since the young men from the Christian Brothers Academy Class of 1960 received their diplomas, but it felt like just yesterday for the more than 2 dozen classmates who gathered for the Jubilee Reunion weekend from Friday, May 21st- Sunday, May 23rd to celebrate this impressive milestone anniversary. The Jubilee Reunion Planning Committee, consisting of: Paul Brooks; George Deptula; Patrick Farone; Paul Finochio; Barry Maloney; Neal McLane; and David Sullivan, worked tirelessly for over 8 months to find ‘missing’ classmates; reach out to fellow Jubilarians to garner excitement for the reunion; and plan every detail of the weekend’s events from menu selection to hotel accommodations. Dave Sullivan utilized his technical savvy by creating and maintaining a dedicated website for the class (www.cba1960.com), where individuals registered their contact information, chatted via a forum, posted photographs, completed profile forms, and generally, reconnected. The committee’s efforts, commitment, and tenacity paved the way for a hugely successful reunion, characterized by classmate, Denny Ragan as, “elegant, touching, and memorable.” The weekend’s festivities were kicked off with a catered sit-down dinner in the W. Dennis Owen, AFSC ’44 Fine Arts Wing reception area.

Close to 50 Jubilarians, their guests, CBA Development staff members, and Brothers joined together to reminisce and catch up. School memorabilia including, newspaper clippings, photos, musicales, and band uniforms were on display. Thanks to Barry Maloney’s creativity, persistence, data collection, and meticulous research, copies of a special edition of the Purple and Gold school newspaper were available for all attendees highlighting stories and photos from the old Willow St. school days to the present. As is the tradition at the Jubilee Reunion, each classmate was called upon after the meal to speak about their memories from their school days and the highlights of their lives since graduation. Those gathered were treated to a succession of spirited, amusing anecdotes and heartfelt tributes. Dave Miller led the group in a rousing chorus of the CBA Willow St. Fight Song. The evening concluded with a tour of the ‘new’ CBA, conducted by Director of Development, Patti Callahan, and Br. Gabriel Fiumano, FSC ’47. The next two days offered a whirlwind of activities for the reunion-goers. Saturday’s activities included a breakfast at the Genesee Grande Hotel (temporary home of several of the out-of -town revelers); a tour of St. Charles School and old Syracuse ‘haunts;’ and a Happy Hour at Riley’s, hosted by classmate, Terry Riley. Saturday evening, several Jubilarians and

their wives attended the Baccalaureate Mass at Immaculate Conception Church in Fayetteville, along with the Class of 2010 and their families. Reunion attendees, Rev. Louis Canino and Rev. Joseph Phillips concelebrated the Mass with Msgr. J. Robert Yeazel ’59. After Mass, a several members of the class joined for a late dinner at the hotel. On Sunday morning, 12 members of the Jubilee class processed before the Class of 2010 graduates at Temple Adath Yeshurun for the 109th Christian Brothers Academy Commencement. Those in attendance were individually called to the stage to receive a gift from the Most Reverend Robert J. Cunningham, Bishop of Syracuse. Barry Maloney and Dave Sullivan, acting as representatives of Class of 1960, presented a check to Principal Br. Joseph Jozwiak, FSC for over $9000 in donations from class members in honor of their reunion. The Class of 1960 Golden Jubilee Reunion concluded with much “Pomp and circumstance,” as had the Jubilarians’ tenure at the Willow St. school. But the weekend’s activities and encounters, filled with fondness, laughter, camaraderie, and brotherhood, best characterized their CBA experience.
