The Brothers of CBA Syracuse pictured left to right: Before taking on the duties of Principal and Community Director at CBA Syracuse, Brother Joseph Jozwiak, FSC was a member of the school’s Board of Trustees and the assistant provincial for the NY Province in Lincroft. At De LaSalle Collegiate HS in Warren, MI he served as president and principal, vice principal, guidance counselor, and on the faculty. He has been a child care worker, assistant principal, and director of development at La Salle School in Albany. Brother Joe is also a Spiritual Director for the Diocese of Syracuse Spiritual Center. Originally hailing from Syracuse’s West Side in Most Holy Rosary Parish, Brother John Loehr, FSC attended public schools. He was a police officer prior to receiving his calling to serve as a Christian Brother. He served in the missions at St. John Bosco School in Mandeville, Jamaica (West Indies). Brother John also worked as the Director of Maintenance at the University of Bethlehem on the West Bank of Palestine. Here at CBA, Brother John can often be found tooling around in his golf cart, at practices and home games, grooming the baseball field, tending to his garden, or baking Irish soda bread or cashew brittle at holiday time.

4

Brother Edmund Dwyer, FSC attended Roberts Elementary school and Central High school and is a member of St. Lucy parish. Brother Ed spent much of his career as a teacher in primary and secondary schools including 25 years at La Salle Academy in New York City. He also spent 8 years in East Africa. Since returning to Syracuse, he has worked in AIDS ministry and with refugees in the area. Brother has been a substitute teacher and during the school’s Classic Corvette Raffle, he has provided valuable volunteer services for the development team. Brother Gabriel Fiumano, FSC graduated from Christian Brothers Academy in 1947. His early assignments as a Brother included the Hillside School in Troy, Holy Name School in NYC, and Sacred Heart in the Bronx. For over 20 years, Gabe serving as prefect, child care worker, and life coach at LaSalle School in Albany. After attending the ABC Business School in Albany, he accepted the position of Dir. of Campus Ministry at CBA. For nearly 3 decades, Brother Gabe has offered his skills in the classroom and beyond: the Booster Club, the Nurse’s Office, or as an enthusiastic fan of the school’s fine arts program.

Marking Milestones A Message From the CBA Alumni Association The year 2011-12 has been a year of milestones for Christian Brothers Academy. The numbers that represent the various achievements within the CBA community range from 50 to 15,000! From the Jubilee anniversary of our arrival at the new Randall Road campus to the 122 students in the Class of 2012 who will go on to college, the accomplishments are impressive. 50 years ago, the classes of the early 60s who made the transition from Willow Street to the new campus remember hitchhiking to Griffin Field for football practice and the stern face of Principal Brother Albian Victor as he imparted the well known Brothers’ discipline! Fast forward to today and the All County Orchestra members practicing in the W. Dennis Owen AFSC ’44 Fine Arts Wing or the 2011 Girls State Championship Lacrosse team playing on field turf in the snow. CBA’s campus has grown and transformed itself since leaving the Willow Street building in 1961 to meet the changing needs of our students. One thing has not changed, however, and that is the intensity and breadth of a CBA education which are what uphold its reputation as the premier college preparatory school in Central New York. Last fall, the Christian Brothers of Syracuse reached a high point when they accepted the Le Moyne College 2011 Simon Le Moyne Award. The award is bestowed on those who make a significant humanitarian contribution to society, serve as prominent leaders in the community, and demonstrate a deep responsibility and commitment to improving the quality of life for others. The Brothers and the thousands of alumni graduates they served have surely met and even surpassed those measures in their century-long association with Syracuse. Our very own Buddy Wleklinski ’75 reached an incredible milestone this year, achieving his 400th win as coach of the CBA varsity boy’s basketball team. With 28 seasons of coaching, including plenty of league and sectional championships – and one state championship; as the school’s Athletic Director; and with over 3 decades as a member of the faculty under his belt, Coach “W” is considered an icon at CBA.

Last year’s graduating class, the class of 2011, was 97% “College Ready” based on the NYS Regents requirements. This is a relatively new measurement, based on standardized test scores, with public school figures being published in the Syracuse Post Standard. We are not surprised but still exceptionally proud to compare so favorably – at the top of the list compared to all other schools in CNY. The average among all schools is 47%.

"The year 2011-12 has been a year of milestones for Christian Brothers Academy." 2012 National Merit Finalist, Gabrielle George ’12 is one of only 15,000 high school seniors to be selected from across the nation. Along with the other members of the distinguished Class of 2012, she is looking forward to the crowning achievement of receiving her CBA diploma at graduation in June, thus stepping forward on the next leg of their journey. During the month of January, Brother Edmund Dwyer FSC celebrated his 91st birthday and his 70th year as a Christian Brother. Read more about Brother Edmund, and the other Brothers of CBA Syracuse, celebrated in this issue. Marking milestones is a significant task in our lives. As we close the Jubilee year on Randall Road, let us be ever mindful of our past achievements, as we look forward with high expectations, for the many milestones yet to be achieved. And while achievements deserve to be celebrated, we know it’s the day-today experiences at Christian Brothers Academy that set the foundation of La Sallian virtues and Christian leadership that mold our graduates into the types of people St. John Baptist De LaSalle envisioned. St. John Baptist De LaSalle……Pray for us Live Jesus in our hearts……Forever

The Christian Brothers of Syracuse Each year at the Founders’ Day Gala, Le Moyne College presents its highest honor, the Simon Le Moyne Award, in recognition of those who make “significant humanitarian contributions to society, serve as prominent leaders in the community and demonstrate a deep responsibility and commitment to improving the quality of life for others.” On November 18, 2011, Le Moyne recognized the Christian Brothers of Syracuse, who embody each of these qualities, as they have dedicated their lives in service to their school and community. The gala was attended by well over 800 people, many of whom were CBA alumni, parents, and friends. The Christian Brothers were well represented by about a dozen Brothers who have served or are currently serving at CBA Syracuse. As part of the religious order founded by St. John Baptist de La Salle, the Christian Brothers are renowned for dedicating themselves to the education of young men and women, and have been responsible for the operation of numerous secondary and post-secondary institutions around the globe. Many local leaders are graduates of CBA Syracuse, bearing testimony to the quality values-based education they received. “Our lives in community and the ministry to which we have committed ourselves at CBA are reflective of the words of St. John Baptist de La Salle spoken to the first Brothers,” said Brother Joe, Principal of Christian Brothers Academy, “Domine, opus tuum – Lord, the work is yours.”

“Our lives in community and the ministry to which we have committed ourselves at CBA are reflective of the words of St. John Baptist de La Salle spoken to the first Brothers”

With over 7,000 alumni across the country and around the world, the spirit of today's CBA acts as a living testament to the education they received under the direction of the Brothers. Their dedication and service, particularly to those in need, makes the entire community a more vibrant place to live and work. Brother Joe also shared his gratitude to the members of the CBA community who were in attendance, saying, “along with the Christian Brothers who have joined us on this wonderful occasion, we have with us this evening a tremendous representation of faculty and staff who, in a real sense, share as recipients of this Simon Le Moyne Award along with the Christian Brothers of Syracuse.” The entire Christian Brothers Academy community is grateful to Le Moyne College for recognizing the important contributions of the Brothers to Central New York.

Making the Most of a Lasallian Education

• •

CBA senior Nora Hakizimana appreciates every opportunity given to her. Nora was born in 1994 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where she spent the first three years of her life. In 1997, due to the raging conflict around the country’s Civil War and the genocide taking place, Nora and her family moved to a refugee camp where she lived for three months in overcrowded and dangerous conditions. The Hakizimanas eventually settled in Rwanda where growing up was hazardous with limited educational opportunities. While Nora was fairly young and doesn’t remember much from her time in Rwanda, she recalls feeling utter confusion about what was going on around her. Nora’s father and step-mother applied to leave Rwanda in search of a better life for their family and were accepted through Catholic Charities to come to the United States as part of the Refugee Resettlement Program. Once the Hakizimanas were established in America, Nora’s father worked diligently toward bringing her and her brother, Jordanie, to Upstate New York to join them.

“The students and teachers are so ready and willing to give up their time to help you succeed,” says Nora, “....we really are a family here at CBA.” Nora and Jordanie arrived in Syracuse, New York in 2002, new to America and with no knowledge of the English language. After becoming accustomed to her surroundings, Nora enrolled at H.W. Smith School in the city where she attended 5th and 6th grades. Nora came to know of Christian Brothers Academy as a fan at soccer games, a familiar sport to people from African countries. After attending the annual open house at CBA, Nora immediately felt at home. She still remembers the extreme excitement that ensued when her acceptance letter to CBA arrived in the mail. Since her arrival at Christian Brothers Academy, Nora has received nothing but encouragement from the CBA community. “The students and teachers are so ready and willing to give up their time to help you succeed,” says Nora, “....we really are a family here at CBA.” CBA’s welcoming yet challenging environment has given Nora the opportunities necessary to continue her education at the collegiate level. “Growing up in Africa, not a lot of kids have the opportunities that are available to us here,” said Nora. She tries to take advantage of these opportunities because she knows first-hand they are not accessible to everyone in the world. She also wants to make her family proud by being the best that she can be. Nora is very involved in Lasallian life, making the most of her time here at CBA. She is a student leader for Peer Ministry and volunteers as a translator for young children who have immigrated to the United States. Nora is a member of the Salsa Club, French Club, Spring Track Team, Global Cultural Society, and the Yearbook.

8

Through CBA’s guidance counseling services, Nora did self study and research which helped her discover the best collegiate path for her skills and interests. She applied to a premier national scholarship program, was accepted and awarded a substantial scholarship which will cover the majority of her tuition and board for college. From among the colleges where she was accepted, she has chosen to attend Brown University this fall and hopes to study International Relations, focusing on African Studies. Nora speaks five languages, a feat that will likely benefit both her college career and her future endeavors. She speaks English, French, Lingala, Kinyawrianda, and Swahili. After traveling with other CBA students to the United Nations in New York City last spring for the Children’s Rights Conference, Nora knew that working with people would be the right fit for her. Volunteering with Catholic Charities over the summer helped Nora realize how much she enjoyed helping others with similar backgrounds and circumstances to her own. Ultimately, she would like to return to Africa and work among her people. After graduation in June, Nora plans to travel back to Rwanda for two months to visit family members still living in Africa. She has been working for three years to save up enough money to go back and spend time with her loved ones. Nora will be forever grateful for the ongoing encouragement and inspiration that the faculty and students at CBA have given her during her years at the school. She has received generous financial support from Christian Brothers Academy which provided her the extraordinary opportunity to receive a Lasallian education, preparing her for a promising future. When asked what the school has taught her, Nora simply stated, “CBA gives me all these opportunities and tools to succeed…they have taught me to make the most of those opportunities and use those tools to do good and help others.”

Nora Hakizimana ’12 was Emcee for the 2012 Multicultural Assembly.

Alumni News Alumni News An Athlete and Hero Dying Young Dave Schardt ’70 (1952 –2011) John Erardi ’70 is a journalist with the Cincinnati Enquirer and was inducted into the CBA LaSallian Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010. He wrote a beautiful article on the life and triumphs of his classmate Dave Schardt ’70 who lost a valiant battle with lymphoma on December 5, 2011. We offer excerpts from it here, but the article and photos can be viewed in their entirety at http://news.cincinnati.com/ article/20111222/COL19/312220143/Erardi-an-athlete-hero-dying-young.

I buried my friend Dave Schardt two weeks ago at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Auburn, N.Y. He died after a valiant, four-year battle with lymphoma. He was 59. . . and as pure as they come. To me, there’s never been another like him. Dave grew up on the north side of Syracuse in a neighborhood of mostly Italians and some Germans, which is why his buddies from the youngest age were named Giamartino, Gilberti and Daddario, and later Bartolo, Ficarro and Schindler (ok, one other German). Later came Calabrese and Erardi. ‘‘The Boys from Syracuse,’’ BFS for short, the first six of them buddies for 50+ years. Jack Ficarro recalls, ‘‘He was tough and competitive, but always helped you up after laying you out on the football field. . . He was unerringly the sportsman, never forgetting (during physical backyard basketball games) to inquire if I was ‘OK’ after he boxed me into the rear screen door of his house or into Rulison’s hedge (next door).’’ I think I admired DS from the very first time I met him in high school. He was a graceful runner; I was slow as an ox. He was all power, elbows and run-you-into-the-ground indefatigability; I was all hand-eye. The high school track was in the distant reaches of our unfenced baseball field, and DS asked with a grin if we could trade places. Meaning I’d have to do his grueling, endless, sprint interval workouts on the quarter-mile oval, while he lazed in the outfield shagging balls if one happened near. I marveled that a guy who was playing three sports, all of them punishing -- cross county in the fall, basketball in the winter and track in the spring – always found time to read the novels assigned to us in English class. He was one of the easiest-going guys I ever met, but I think the one thing he couldn’t stand was somebody taking advantage of him. I think the reason he couldn’t stand it was because he would never take advantage of anybody. Dave wanted to beat you, but he wouldn’t have been able to live with himself if he had done it any other way than fair and square.

12

Coach Jerry Riordan told me the other day that in his 20 years of coaching track and cross country at Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse, he never had an athlete do the two running sports plus basketball. The amazing thing was: Dave excelled in all of them. And then, Riordan paused and said something that startled me, but in a pleasing way. ‘‘A lot of times people die, and we praise them and gloss over their shortcomings,’’ he said. ‘‘But Dave was really special. He was touched by God.’’ I was driving home the other night after I learned of Dave’s passing. For some reason I began counting how many times I had been up to Syracuse to see him since November last year. Five times. Even though he was 600 miles away. At a high school function a year ago November; at a buddies’ reunion in March; for a dinner on the town in July; at Willy Gilberti’s daughter’s wedding in September, and the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Dave was the same solid Rock of Gibraltar all five times. Yes, he had a cough over Thanksgiving. He knew his days were numbered. But he still downed his favorite ribs from his favorite Auburn eatery, Lasca’s, and knocked back some beers, and railed against the ineptitude of our beloved Syracuse Orange gridders on the TV. And Dave said the words that were so typical of Dave: ‘‘You play the hand you’re dealt.’’ Said it three or four times, matter of fact. Eight days later, he was gone.

Truth is you don’t become Dave in a lifetime. Eulogizing Dave, his sister Sue said: ‘‘Every lap in every pool he ever swam in. Every mile on every track, street, every road he ever ran on . . . Probably every single shovelful of snow from our long driveway at 533 Grant Boulevard. He counted. He counted the time. And when things took a turn four years ago, when his great, strong body began to turn against him, it bewildered him – all of us – I think. But the endurance he had cultivated over his lifetime defined the determination with which he faced the difficult ebbing and flowing of this last mile of his life. He rallied all of us – his family, certainly, those who worked with him, his devoted friends, this whole community. We all got behind him and (his wife) Barb, and responded to his need. He inspired us. And we loved him for that.’’ I miss Dave. But, from experience, I believe that even though the good die young, afterward they stay with us the longest, the strongest and the surest. My son, who works in Syracuse in a college co-op and hosted me on a spare air mattress in his studio apartment on the nights of Dave’s wake and funeral, suggested that maybe the Lord needed another hard worker somewhere, and took Dave. I ran beside Dave once. I never felt we were out front.

It wasn’t until I was driving north for the wake and funeral a week later that it hit me. I hadn’t been visiting Dave for his sake; I had been visiting him for mine. I was trying to soak up some of his strength and goodness. I wish I had reconnected with him sooner. But you don’t become Dave in seven days.

I felt he was out front by himself. I still do.

• Wait up, Dave.

alumni news CBA Alumni Association Presents the 2012 Purple and Gold Award On March 24, 2012, trustees, alumni, previous award winners, and members of the CBA community gathered in De La Salle Hall at Christian Brothers Academy to honor the 2012 Alumni Association Purple & Gold Award recipients: Ed Barno and Mark Carroll ’74. These deserving gentlemen were chosen to receive this prestigious award for their long, dedicated years of service to CBA and its students and for their commitment to the school’s ideals and principles. In the early ’90s Ed and Sharon Barno enrolled their children, first Andrew ’00 then Meagan ’02 at Christian Brothers Academy. As a business leader in our community, Ed was asked to serve on the Board of Trustees in the late ’90s. He served as chair from 2007-2010, guiding the school to develop its current strategic plan. Under his leadership, the school implemented a comprehensive capital campaign, To Be The Best, which raised $11 million. In 2011 he was invited to serve the Brothers as a member of the Christian Brothers District of Eastern North America Mission Executive Council. We are grateful for Ed’s presence among the CBA community, for his business acumen, his belief in the Lasallian mission, and his passion for helping others.

14

As a 1974 graduate of Christian Brothers Academy, Mark Carroll is well known among the alumni. Having served as President of the Alumni Association from 1998-2001, he was the Association representative on the Board of Trustees during that time. Mark was instrumental in establishing the annual Alumni Golf Scramble and has chaired the event every year for 16 years. He was involved in CBA’s Centennial Celebration committee, his class reunions, and has supported the alumni phonathon annually, urging his classmates to make calls on behalf of their alma mater. He started his career as a CPA as a staff accountant for Catholic Charities and later became a partner in Evans and Bennet CPA firm in Syracuse where he has been for 27 years. Mark and his wife Candy have 2 grown sons, Ryan and Michael, and live in Phoenix.

alumni news Annual Alumni Basketball Game The 2011 Christian Brothers Academy Alumni Basketball game was perhaps the most competitive it has been in years both for the ladies’ and men’s team. The hardwood classic was held on Thursday December 29, 2011 and had 11 ladies and 29 men participate. Per tradition, and with much anticipation, color commentary was offered by Tom Niland ’65 and thoroughly added to the spirit of bashing your fellow "Brothers." The ladies started off with a quick pace and a huge lead by the gold team. The purple team came roaring back and made it a close contest. In the end the gold team prevailed due to perimeter shooting and strong rebounding. The men’s game pitted purple vs. gold in an epic battle of will and a race toward the ice bags. Casey Fallon ’87 jumped out to an impressive performance which earned him the MVP award. Senator John DeFrancisco ’64 returned to the hardwood for the umpteenth year in a row, earning him the usual “oldest guy on the court” award. Notwithstanding the gritty play by all, the purple team went onto victory. After the games and trash-talking all the teams came together for a reception in the Callahan Gym where stories and shots became grander and the fellowship of brotherhood was shared by all.

2011 Alumni Phonathon Hits High Note Fall 2011 was a banner year for the Annual Alumni Phonathon held in October and November. Over 80 Alumni returned to CBA to call their classmates seeking their support of the Annual Fund. The Alumni Association played a pivotal role in organizing the event. Members served as recruiters and class agents. They signed letters and hit the phones hard for their Alma Matter. This year a record 30 classes were called with over 80 callers. In total, over 1300 calls were made which resulted in 529 pledges and gifts to the 11-12 Annual Fund. Your help will be needed again this fall when we work to reach even more classes. If you would like to participate, contact Jim Battaglia ’88 at jbattaglia@cbasyracuse. org or 446-5960 x1122. The 2012-2013 Campaign will be the best with your help. Enjoy dinner and drinks on us and share some laughs with your classmates.

Planned Giving A Lasting Footprint As dedicated long time donor and board of trustee member of Christian Brothers Academy, Bob Gang ’35 believes that no matter how you choose to be remembered, it is important to leave lasting footprints and “help the Brothers continue their mission”.

lasallian legacy society members Anonymous Dr. Carl Baum ’58 † Mr. Daniel Byrne ’70 Mr. Michael Domaratz ’74 Mr. Michael Kearney ’71 Mr. Michael Loftus ’63

“The matter of a bequest” Bob says, “started many years ago before anyone discussed it as I was drawing up wills for Board members.” As an attorney with Mackenzie Hughes law firm, Bob knew all those years ago that planned giving would become a great source of revenue and stability for CBA’s future. “It is our greatest challenge to ensure the survival of the school. We are doing well so far, however this problem gets more difficult as we lose Brothers in the ranks of the schools. I have worked on alumni contacts since 1948 as the key to both our finances and our ability to continue the messages of St. La Salle.”

Bob included CBA in his will, and he has allocated a portion of his final assets to CBA, adding his name as a charter member of the Lasallian Legacy Society. He says it's a good feeling knowing his gift will continue influencing the Lasallian mission of CBA for future generations and stand as a permanent legacy for a lifelong commitment to the school.
