January 2013 Dear Alumni, Parents, Grandparents and Friends of CBA, I’m sure that most people have heard, at one time or another, the biblical story found in St. Luke’s Gospel of the ten lepers who were cured by Jesus. The healing miracle that Jesus performed for these individuals lifted from them the social stigma that accompanied people who were afflicted with leprosy. Where did the nine cured lepers go? They probably went off to share their joy with family and friends; perhaps they went to show themselves to the chief priests as they were instructed to do by Jesus. The “tenth” leper may well have been on his way when he realized that he forgot to thank the One who made him well and he “returned, glorifying God in a loud voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him.” (Luke 17:15-16). Our recent celebrations of Thanksgiving and Christmas helped us focus our attention on giving thanks to those people who have touched our lives in special and unique ways. As you review this Annual Report, the names of CBA’s benefactors and donors are listed, acknowledging their contributions and donations to our school. My sincere thanks and gratitude go to all who have contributed this past year* to the Lasallian mission as lived and experienced at Christian Brothers Academy. Other highlights in this report include a letter from our Lasallian Educator of the Year, an article featuring CBA’s Unsung Heroes, an Alumni Profile and several other newsworthy items. I join my thoughts together with those of St. Paul in his First Letter to the Philippians when he says, “I thank my God every time I think of you! It’s being quiet enough and undisturbed enough for a period of time so that the songs can begin to sort of peek out, and you begin to have emotional experiences in a musical way.” – James Taylor As the recipient of the Distinguished Lasallian Educator of the Year for the 20122013 school year, I am reminded of many experiences over the past 18 years. These experiences range from the thrills of seeing my students succeed, to the sorrows of losing colleagues and students, to watching my own son walk across the stage to receive his CBA diploma last spring. I feel especially grateful for the opportunity that I was awarded to be able to work in our ministry here in Syracuse. I consider my colleagues to be friends and feel that CBA is like a second family to me. I distinctly remember the phone call that I received in 1995 with the news that I had been hired to be the instrumental music director and eighth grade music teacher. I also remember starting my CBA career with the notion that this was “just a job” and one that I was grateful for. Over the years, however, I began feeling as though it might be something more. I began to involve myself in various aspects of the Lasallian world, such as LLI (Lasallian Leadership Institute). Through these types of formation, I realized that being a part of the CBA community was not only a job, but rather a calling, one that I have embraced. This Annual Report is an acknowledgement of deep gratitude – a great big THANK YOU as depicted on the cover. Hundreds of individuals – from current parents to recent alumni, to alumni from the Willow Street days, from trustees to families and friends who comprise the CBA community – have demonstrated their support in many different ways. I add my enthusiastic voice to the accolades. Without your gifts, CBA could not function. Most importantly, I would truly like to thank my colleagues and students, both past and present, for allowing me to be a small part of their lives, whether it was working with the Academy Teachers Association, holding the conductor’s baton in preparation for the next concert or chaperoning the 8th graders to Gettysburg. Zaccai and his firm are “brainstormers” of everyday objects that make life a little easier, a little more interesting: the Swiffer system, the Reebok pump sneaker, the Aeron chair, the red Target shopping cart, among others. On the spectrum of design, art is at one end and function is at the other. Zaccai likes to hover somewhere in between. “A painting in a gallery doesn’t do much good just hanging there. If it doesn’t meet a need - if there’s not an emotional and economic end - then it’s not really design, it’s decoration,” Zaccai said.

ndustrial Designer Gianfranco Zaccai ’65 thinks great food and great design have something in common. A meal isn’t always about getting sufficient nutrition, he says, and a chair isn’t always just a place to sit. “It’s the social situation they foster. Great food, like great design, allows people to be together in a way they couldn’t have imagined,” said Zaccai during a recent phone interview. In 1983, the CBA grad co-founded Continuum, a Boston-based international consultancy that designs new products and services, works on brand makeovers and conducts consumer research. With offices in Los Angeles, Milan, Seoul and Shanghai,

One of his most personally satisfying inventions is the Omnipod insulin pump: a miniature, wearable insulin pump for people, especially children, with diabetes. The tiny device is undetectable under clothing. It’s designed that way so other children won’t see it. “It allows a sick kid to just be a kid,” Zaccai said. Zaccai also designed the Compass, a modular system of interchangeable components and wall-mounted furnishings for healthcare facilities. The moveable components are designed to eliminate the spread of infections and still meet the organizational needs of clinicians and the comfort of patients. His inventions are not created in a vacuum, he said. Procter & Gamble challenged Continuum to help the corporation discover a better way to clean. So Continuum team members spent hours in homes watching people clean. The extra step of cleaning a floor before mopping it inspired the static electric, disposable piece of paper now populating cleaning aisles across the world: the Swiffer.

Alumni News Zaccai moved to the North side of Syracuse from Brescia, Italy, east of Milan, when he was 9 years old, the youngest child of an optometrist/ photographer father and an artist-homemaker mother. His father had nearly been executed twice in Italy during World War II, and his mother was badly beaten. When they relocated to Syracuse, his once well-to-do parents, now refugees, struggled to get by. His father took employment at American Optical helping with prescriptions, and his mother became a seamstress at Addis Co. downtown. Zaccai’s sisters taught him enough Latin to pass the CBA entrance exam and, although English was his second language, he entered CBA in the 10th grade. By his senior year, he mastered English to such a degree, that one of the Brothers accused him of plagiarism, he said, laughing.

It’s not always about the almighty dollar for Zaccai, either. He feels he has a higher purpose. “There’s nothing better than the feeling of going to bed at night, knowing you’re doing something positive for the world. You can do that in lots of different ways and jobs. You just put ethics in what you do,” he said.

“It was a great honor to go to CBA,” Zaccai said. He doesn’t know how much financial aid CBA provided his parents so he could attend, but he knew they couldn’t afford it. After graduating in 1965, Zaccai studied industrial design at Syracuse University and later got a degree in architectural design at Boston Architectural College. He still believes wholeheartedly in Catholic education and its fundamental values. “The greatest core value I learned (at CBA) was to do things for others, rather than just do for oneself,” he said. Although CBA had no art program at the time, Zaccai said his architectural “calling” was inspired by his creative, strongly ethical parents. He discovered product design at SU, and adopted 22

The Class of 1972 gathered in full force in early October 2012 to celebrate 40 years since CBA. At least 45 “Brothers” attended the weekend events, which included a tasty Friday night Dinosaur BBQ tailgate at CBA, and a trip to Alibrandi Stadium to watch a solid trouncing of Henninger. Everybody woke up and did it again Saturday night at the Saltine Warrior, a CBA alum-owned (John Shahin ’81) sports pub in downtown Syracuse. The festivities drew even more reunion revelers than Friday night, including Terry Aragoni, Gene Farnett, Gary Riley, Jeff Peisch and Andy Szkotak. Congratulations to the 1972 40th Reunion Committee of Don Dekay, Peter Demlein, Michael LaCasse, Dan Robbino, Bob Morris and Lou Steigerwald for an excellent turnout and a weekend full of reconnection, lots of love and shared memories.

Four members of the Class of 1952 celebrated their 60th year since graduation from CBA in September, 2012, by attending a Road Scholar historical and cultural program in Quebec, Canada. Dan Dombroski and wife, Myra, of Syracuse; Don Lauria and wife, Marie, from North Carolina; Frank Lostumbo and wife, Liz, from Maryland; and Jim Rowe and wife, Mary, from Ohio, met a few days early to share memories, photos and to explore Quebec City. Then these road scholars drove to Auberge du Mont, a classroom with a view in the Laurentian Mountains. Nestled near a small lake with a stunning mountainous backdrop, the crew was treated to marvelous fall colors, local cuisine and educational day trips. Now that’s a reunion they’d like to do every year.

Alumni News HOMECOMING Weekend 2012 On September 28, the Alumni Association hosted Homecoming weekend. The CBA Varsity football squad solidly trounced Central Square, 42-0, before a sea of umbrella-waving Purple and Gold fans. Immediately following the Varsity game, MVP plaques were awarded to seniors Cody Radziewicz (#1), for his strong offensive efforts, and Joey Pascarella (#34) for outstanding defensive play. He recently published a book titled The Bermuda Form: Interpretation and Dispute Resolution of Excess Liability Insurance (Oxford University Press). The Bermuda Form refers to a specialized insurance policy form developed in the mid-80s to respond to a drastic shrinkage in the market for liability insurance available to major U.S. and international corporations. “This book is a valuable guide even for experienced practitioners in this difficult area of law…” – Oxford University Press. Dick says he appreciates the recognition after a long haul of writing! 1968 William A. Harfosh has succeeded Tom Gensler ’64 as president of B.R. Johnson, Inc., which distributes windows, doors and hardware in Syracuse, NY. 1972 Jed Delmonico ’72 and son J.D. Delmonico ’99 were featured in The Syracuse PostStandard on Oct. 2, 2012, for the success of their family-owned business, Delmonico Insurance Agency. Word on the street is Jed’s revenues have doubled, his client base has grown into the thousands and he’s opened another site in Skaneateles, all since J.D. came on board seven years ago. Class of 1973 grads couldn’t wait until 2013 to get their 40th reunion party started. Sal Sciuga and wife Cathy, Jim Merriman and Beth, Mark Hettler and Roxanne, Jay Kianka and Kris, and Tony Basile and Carol, held a practice event in the Thousand Islands on Wellesley Island this summer. They set sail through the islands on Sciuga’s boat, then landed back at Merriman’s camp for a fun-in-the-sun barbecue. 1976 George S. McVay has been promoted to global operations business leader for the DuPont Co. Dan Byrne competed in Africa’s largest charity road rally, “Budapest to Bamako 2012,” covering 5,800 miles over two continents. Dan and his son Conor – a pilot, rock climber and “great navigator” – were part of the first American squad to participate in the intercontinental road rally which raises money to benefit children in West Africa. “We were driving off-road over a 5000-foot pass in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco at midnight in heavy snow with no guardrails and no headlights,” Dan said. “We later realized if we had taken a wrong turn we would have fallen 1000 feet.” He and his companions in Team Bright-Eyed drove a dieselpowered 1995 Toyota Land Cruiser called the Wildebeest, and finished 28th out of 40 in its category, raising $10,000 toward a vocational school and orphanage in Guinea Bissau. This was on his bucket list, Dan said, after climbing 12,000-foot Mount Adams in Washington, and ahead of visiting Antarctica. Raymond G. Olsson works for the State of California Air Resources Board as an economist for the California Cap and Trade program to reduce air pollution. 1978 CBA can proudly say we have a Bishop in the family! On August 26, 2012, the rector of the Ukrainian Catholic University, Fr. Borys Gudziak, Ph.D., was ordained bishop in St. George’s Cathedral in Lviv. During the ceremony, which was led by His Beatitude Patriarch Sviatoslav Shevchuk and head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church, U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine John Tefft read a congratulatory letter from none other than U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The Bishop made his first visit as Bishop to his home parish in Syracuse, St. John Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, on Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012.

Matt Szkotak won the “Over 50” Division of the Annual Rugby Tournament in Aspen, Colorado this year. 1985 U.S. Army Gen. Martin E. Dempsey, Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff, promoted Capt. Peter Colella, a Naval Medical Center Portsmouth oral surgeon, to captain during a ceremony on September 7, 2012. Dempsey has been a patient of Colella’s since being diagnosed with cancer in 2010. Colella, NMCP’s chairman for the Department of Dental and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, began to treat Dempsey when he commanded U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command at Fort Monroe, VA. Colella still treats Dempsey and travels to the Pentagon a few times a year to provide care. Colella joined the Navy through the Health Professions Scholarship Program in May 1994 and completed the General Practice Residency Program at National Naval Medical Center Bethesda. His tours include USS Nassau, and a residency program at NMCP, during which time he attended Eastern Virginia Medical School. He then served on board USS Enterprise at Naval Hospital Jacksonville, FL, and on board USS Theodore Roosevelt, before returning to NMCP in 2010. 29

1988 Dave Borasky has returned to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill after a 14year hiatus to become deputy director for the Office of Human Research Ethics. The office is responsible for the oversight of all university research involving human subjects. At any given time, there are more than 4,000 active research protocols underway on campus, from cutting-edge health research and clinical trials to student research. Dave looks forward to seeing fellow Class of 1988 alums at next year’s 25th reunion. 1990 Jeffrey Herrick is a research professor at George Mason University and director of the undergraduate Rehabilitation Science program. 1996 Joe Sindoni served as head football coach for Skaneateles High School last fall. As offensive coordinator in 2011, the team made it through sectionals and to the state championship competition. In a Post Standard article, Skaneateles AD Stacy Tice said several candidates were interviewed for the head coaching job as part of what she called “a legitimate search process. He really put the needs of the athletes at the forefront of his decision making, even when he knew we were going through the full search process to name a permanent coach,” said Tice. “He devoted endless, countless hours to keeping the program up and running. We’ve been very impressed with what he’s done.” During his first season as head coach, the Lakers were Section III Champions, 10-1 overall and 5-0 in league play. Go Joe!

Dr. Dani J. Rinaldo graduated from the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy on May 4, 2012, on her 24th birthday. Dani graduated with a Doctorate of Pharmacy. She has passed the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination and has accepted employment with CVS/ Caremark Pharmacy in the southern region of Charlotte, NC. Dani resides in Fort Mill, SC. 2008 Le Moyne lacrosse player Brittany Brigandi was named Midfielder of the Year by the IWLCA in her senior season and was selected to the Northeast-10 All-Academic Team. A Psychology major with a 3.306 GPA, Brigandi was named the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year after leading the team and ranking second in the conference with 66 goals scored, the seventh-most in the country. An IWLCA All-America, IWLCA North Region and Northeast-10 Conference First Team selection, Brigandi registered a team-best 79 points to rank fourth in the NE-10. Brigandi, who scored the game-winning goal five times, recorded 46 draw controls and picked up 30 groundballs. Pete Clarke has enlisted in the Marines and is pursuing Officer Candidate Training. 2009

Nate Frechette Jr., a junior attackman for the Northeast-10 Conference champion Le Moyne Dolphins, has been named to the Northeast-10 Conference Academic All-Conference team for men’s lacrosse. Frechette earned the first All-Academic honors of his career. A Management Information Systems major with a 3.539 GPA, Frechette finished second on the team with 36 points and 22 assists. A Northeast-10 Second Team selection, he ranked fifth on the team in goals scored with 14. Frechette registered three game-winning goals.

Congratulations to Kayla Stroman, who was named to the 2012-13 MAAC Women’s Basketball Preseason All-MAAC Teams, as selected by the league’s 10 head coaches. One of the five players named will be awarded the 2012-13 MAAC Women’s Basketball Preseason Player of the Year. Stroman, a Niagara University junior guard, made the ALL-MAAC Second Team last season and was named to the Preseason ALL-MAAC Third Team. After redshirting in 2010-11 due to an injury, Stroman came back to start in all 32 games in 2011-12 and led the team in points per game (10.8), steals (81) and assists (124). 2010 Pete Corasiniti is driving SU basketball mad. The former CBA baller and current head manager for the Syracuse University Basketball team redesigned Midnight Madness, drawing a sellout crowd to this year’s late night unveiling of the 2012-13 team at the Dome. Even Carmelo Anthony couldn’t stay away, and word is, many starry-eyed basketball recruits were in the house that night, too. Corasiniti also helps run team workouts and travels to all away games. Congratulations to Leanne Ockenden, who was named to the 2012-13 MAAC Women’s Basketball Preseason All-MAAC Teams, as selected by the league’s 10 head coaches. One of the five players named will be awarded the 2012-13 MAAC Women’s Basketball Preseason Player of the Year. Ockenden, a Marist College junior guard, earned All-MAAC Third Team honors last season. She was 10th in the league in field goal percentage, shooting 43.4% from the field. Ockenden played in all 34 games for the Red Foxes, starting in 32 of them. 2011 Mollie Didio is majoring in Communications at SUNY Oswego and is on the equestrian team. 2012 Emily Doherty was honored for academic excellence at St. Bonaventure University, and performs in a singing group there called Bonacoustics.

Notes & Quotes And one more note of distinction… Doug Sedgwick, who led CBA’s varsity girls’ lacrosse to a state championship last year, was honored by Syracuse University as a Letterwinner of Distinction for SU lacrosse at the Turning Stone Event Center on October 12. The ‘Tradition of Excellence Continues’ celebration honored eight of SU’s former athletic standouts and one former coach. A captain of the 1980 lacrosse team and a fourtime letter winner, Sedgwick was chosen to play in the 1980 North-South Game. Sedgwick earned a B.A. in geography in 1980. In 1997, the office furniture industry veteran founded Sedgwick Business Interiors in Rochester and serves as its president. The company added offices in Syracuse and Ithaca and has earned top performance awards from Cornell University, the Army Corps of Engineers and earned nationwide best-in-class and leadership awards from Herman Miller. Sedgwick has been the Varsity Girl’s Lacrosse coach at Christian Brothers Academy since 2005. In 2011, he coached the team to the New York State Championship, was named All-Central New York Girls Coach of the Year and won the Reed Hawk Sportsmanship award from the Syracuse Sports Corporation. He has been named the Onondaga HS Liberty League Coach of the Year three times.

The bride is from Keene, NH, and both Brian and Nicole attended University of New Hampshire where she played soccer and he played football. Both currently attend University at Buffalo where Brian is a research assistant pursuing a Masters in Aerospace Engineering. Nicole teaches intermediate French at UB and is working toward her doctorate in French literature. The best man was Dario Arezzo ’05, and one of the groomsmen was Jon Knaust ’05.

LasallianLegacy Society What will your legacy be? If you are like many Christian Brothers Academy alumni, the school has played an important role in your life. Perhaps you discovered a talent or passion while taking an AP class or were encouraged by a Brother or faculty member to reach your full potential. Fifty-Six CBA Students Earn AP Scholar Awards Fifty-six CBA students have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on Advanced Placement Exams. The College Board’s Advance Placement Program (AP) provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous collegelevel courses while still in high school and earn college credit, advanced placement or both, for successful performance on the AP Exams. The College Board recognizes several levels of achievement based on students’ performance on AP Exams. Twenty CBA students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams. CBA students created art during the 2011-12 academic year that was chosen and photographed to be exhibited on the Connective Corridor bus #1017, also known as the candy cane bus. The artwork was displayed from JuneOctober. The free bus service, which connects the Syracuse University hill with downtown Syracuse, includes stops at The Everson, The MOST, The Landmark Theatre, 601 Tully, and the Community Folk Art Center.

Wishes Do Come True Thanks To “Raise Your Paddle” Each year CBA teachers are asked to submit proposals for teaching aids, equipment or software costing up to $5,000 that would directly benefit students and utilize a creative approach to learn.

Students in math classes at CBA benefit from the newest calculator technology from Texas Instrument Navigation System, which connects students’ calculators to a main wireless system and projects it onto a white board.

At last March’s Lasallian Dinner and Auction, three submissions from the teachers’ “wish list” were selected to be included in the “Raise Your Paddle” live auction. With funds raised that evening, the Math department was able to purchase two classroom sets of the newest calculator technology from Texas Instruments Navigation System, which connects students’ calculators to a main wireless system and projects it onto a white board. In addition, the database and test generator for the NYS Regents curriculum, Examgen, was also acquired in order to more readily prepare students to master the New York State Regents Exams.

The third teacher request to benefit from the “Raise Your Paddle auction was the Reading Resource department, which requested Kurzweil 3000 software. Kurzweil 3000 is a reading, writing and learning software for students that require extra attention. The software uses a multi-sensory approach, presenting printed or electronic text on a computer screen with added visual and audible accessibility. Athletic A tth h l t i Success S F For B Brothers tth h It’s been a successful fall campaign for the athletic teams at CBA. Here’s a look at each team’s accomplishments: Football finished undefeated in the league and captured the Class AA Sectional Title with a 35-24 win against Baldwinsville. The team ended its season with a 26-14 loss to Orchard Park in the state semifinals. This was the Brothers first trip to the state tournament since 2005. The Brothers finished the 2012 campaign with an 11-1 record. Girls Swimming finished undefeated in the league, second in the Class A Championships and in third place in the overall competition. Summer Schmitt, Kathryn Coughlin and Maggie Fletcher qualified for the state meet, which was held at Ithaca College November 15-17. Schmitt finished second in the butterfly and third in the backstroke. Coughlin finished fourth in the breaststroke and Maggie Fletcher finished in the top 25 of both of her events. The 200-medley relay team finished third and the freestyle medley finished 15th. Girls Soccer finished in second place in their division with a 9-5-2 record and lost to FayettevilleManlius, 3-1 in Sectionals. Boys Soccer was named Section III Class A Co-Champions after tying Fowler. Finished the season with a 15-3-1 record. Cross Country finished in third place in the OHSL Liberty Division. Megan Pierce finished in second place in the Sectional Championship and qualified for the state meet. Girls Tennis finished in third place in the league with an 8-5 overall record. The team advanced to the Section III Class A semifinals where they lost to eventual champion Fayetteville-Manlius. Boys Golf finished the season as undefeated OHSL Champions and placed second in the Section III Tournament. Jack Bellardini and Drew Derrenbacker will represent CBA in the state tournament qualifier in the spring. 40

Unsung Heroes

CBA Is Thankful for Maintenance Trio CBA’s Maintenance Trio (l-r): Jim Stoltz, Chrissy Ornoski, and Jim Veverka

It’s 5:00 a.m. in the middle of January. The parking lot and sidewalks of Christian Brothers Academy are covered with snow and someone needs to shovel. It’s 7:00 p.m. on a Thursday in March. The Annual Auction and Dinner is Saturday and someone needs to find an extra extension cord. It’s 1:00 p.m. on a humid day in the middle of July. CBA Summer Sizzle soccer camp is underway. With a couple hundred campers about to invade the grounds, someone needs to open up the stadium and prepare the locker rooms. It’s 9:00 a.m. on a Monday in October. The toilet on the second floor is plugged and someone needs to clear it. Who do you call? … “Someone?” That “someone” could be any one of the three maintenance staff members at Christian Brothers Academy. Meet Jim Stoltz, Chrissy Ornoski and Jim Veverka. They are more reliable than the postman and they are there in every type of weather, all kinds of sporting and special events and any maintenance casualty that might strike CBA, be it the plugged toilet on the second floor or the heating and air conditioning unit. It’s a thankless job, but hey, “someone” has to do it! 41

“Honestly, I wouldn’t say it’s a thankless job,” says Stoltz, who has been the Director of Maintenance since January of 2005. “I enjoy it. I always find someone who needs something done. When you work in this field for a majority of your life, it becomes a way of life. Everyone is so thankful and appreciative when we can help them.” Right back at you, as CBA is thankful for the maintenance trio. When it comes to maintenance, Stoltz, who has been in the field his entire professional life, is a jack-of-all-trades. As the Director of Maintenance, Stoltz oversees maintenance both inside and outside of the buildings comprising the CBA campus, from the boilers in the basement to the seal on the roof at the Brothers’ residence. Jim handles requests for proposals for projects, assigns tasks and monitors them from conception to completion. Stoltz assists with setup and breakdown of events at CBA and is the one who is here at 5:00 a.m. if not earlier with Ornoski to salt the parking lots and sidewalks on those snowy Syracuse mornings. “My job is very rewarding,”Stoltz shared. “From seeing a project from conception to completion, to helping the staff and faculty here at CBA with any of their maintenance needs and events. It’s all good.”

It’s all good for Annemarie Mosley, Associate Director for Special Events and Programs at CBA, who on a regular basis works with the maintenance staff on events. No stone is left unturned when it comes to their efforts. “They always give above and beyond to ensure that every detail is taken care of at the events that I oversee,” Mosley said. “The set-up is done according to my expectations. They are always on top of their game. It’s a pleasure working with them. They are always willing to help.” “I have an excellent team,” Stoltz added. “They have an awesome set of skills. We work well together. There’s a lot of camaraderie. It’s a pleasure if you like who you work with. It makes it nice to get up in the morning.” Getting up in the morning and traveling 60 miles round trip each day to Homer High School began to take its toll on Chrissy Ornoski, especially in the winter months. When she discovered the job opening at CBA, she applied immediately. “I remember during my interview process, Brother said to me, ‘there’s so many people out there without a job and you have one, why do you want to be here.’ I told him I need to be here. This is where I want to be. I’m so fortunate that I was hired here. I love it here.” Chrissy arrives at work at around 7:00 a.m. each morning and works until 3:00 p.m. A typical day at CBA will find her picking up the mail in the building and delivering it to the Dewitt Post Office. She might be outside for a couple of hours tending to debris or leaves throughout the campus. During lunch, she is in the cafeteria keeping the tables and floors tidy. She cleans the locker rooms and any other needs that may arise in the building during the course of the day. During summer, she keeps the grounds clean for the summer camps. “Chrissy is always helpful,” CBA head football coach Joe Casemento said. “She works my summer camps. She is always willing to help others. All of our maintenance crew is top-notch. We are lucky to have them.”

Like Ornoski, Jim Veverka also started at CBA in 2010. He has spent his professional career in the air conditioning and heating business. He is also a licensed electrician. Veverka works the afternoon/evening shift on weekdays. Like Stoltz and Ornoski, he will come in on the weekends if needed. He is responsible for maintaining the air conditioning, the boilers, the lights and general maintenance at the school. He can also mow and plow when necessary. “I do whatever has to be done,” Veverka said. “I have been doing this line of work since I was 17. Building maintenance comes naturally for me.” Veverka calls himself “the parts guy.” “I am at Home Depot often,” Veverka shared. “There is always something that needs a part and I have to make sure we have it.” Some fixes have to be done after hours. That’s when Stoltz and Veverka team up. “He is great to work with and for,” Veverka said of Stoltz. “We have a great team and we will always do whatever it takes to get the job done, big or small. We are always trying to accommodate.” Brenda Mulhern, Director of Operations, echoed those sentiments. “They are meticulous, devoted, constructive, accommodating, compassionate,” Mulhern remarked. “I have never had an instance where one of the three staff members has said ‘no.’ They are accessible 24/7 to assist with facility issues, lend a hand to the Brothers or to any of the CBA staff members, families or students. They are truly three of the finest maintenance staff members that have ever worked for me.” “This is like our second home,”Veverka added. “We take pride in what we do. I think people genuinely appreciate us being here.”

It can be tough keeping all those fields clean. “I get it done and it’s rewarding,” she said. “The most rewarding part of my job though is the overwhelming gratitude from the staff, faculty, parents and students. That’s what makes my job the best.” 42
