April 24, 2021 Dear CBA Family and Friends, On behalf of the Christian Brothers, the Board of Trustees, the faculty, staff, and students of Christian Brothers Academy, I would like to thank you for participating in the 32nd annual Lasallian Auction. Although this year’s event is a little different than the past, its importance has never been greater! Thank you for your support! This exciting event would not be possible without the dedicated efforts of the Auction Committee members and volunteers, led by our exceptional chairs: Angie and Robert Sayles, Michelle and Marc Engle and Kathy Wiese. We are blessed by our committee volunteers’ support through their donations of time, wisdom, and leadership. My sincere appreciation as well to Mrs. Annemarie Mosley and CBA’s Institutional Advancement Department for their efforts in coordinating tonight’s event. I am grateful to each of our volunteers and staff members for putting together another extraordinary event during these most challenging of times. There is a magnificent set of items that have been procured, catalogued, and displayed virtually for bidding. All items donated are a testimony to the benevolence of countless friends and CBA community members. I would also like to offer my most sincere gratitude to our event sponsors as well as our advertisers in this program. I encourage you to please consider supporting the businesses who have advertised with us this year. Your attendance and support this evening is essential to our continued ability to offer the CBA education that has been ranked as the top Catholic school program in Upstate New York. The proceeds from our Lasallian Dinner and Auction directly affect each of our students by helping to bridge the gap between tuition and the true cost for our students to attend CBA. This event helps to ensure that CBA remains accessible to those who desire a high caliber, college preparatory, Catholic education in the Lasallian tradition. Bid high and bid generously on the marvelous array of exciting auction items knowing that you are not only gaining an item or experience but that you are also supporting a transformational educational experience. With every winning bid, our students and teachers win as well. Now, please join us as we celebrate this exciting event! Sincerely,
Matthew Keough President

Purple and Gold Award Recipients for 2020 The Alumni Association selects Purple and Gold recipients from among nominated individuals who have demonstrated outstanding support in the best interests of the students, faculty, and alumni of CBA; have dedicated years of service to the Academy; and have been committed to the ideals and principles of CBA. John Barsanti ’69 St. Mary’s parish was the home parish of the Barsanti family and John attended public school until his father decided it was time he had the benefit of a Catholic education at the hand of the Christian Brothers. John fondly recalls and appreciates the time and dedication of the Brothers and teachers at CBA, whose patience and discipline improved his educational focus. John later graduated from Niagara University where he majored in accounting, accepting a job offer from Ernst & Ernst. In 1976, John married Trish Losty and was able to take advantage of career opportunities that involved international travel and family relocation. John worked at Carrier Corporation in the finance department as the company was transitioning from an export organization to a global manufacturing company. After living in Singapore, Australia, Madison, WI, and St Louis, MO, the Barsantis returned to Syracuse in 2003. John started up a private equity firm with his Carrier mentors and a business consulting practice that put to use the skills he had hewn in his worldwide travels. Back in Syracuse, John was invited to join the CBA Board. As Chair of the Finance Committee during the financial crisis in 2007-2009, he led an adept and dedicated volunteer committee, making recommendations on investment strategy, and establishing business plans and analysis that are still being used today. As class agent for the class of 1969, he supported the class’ fundraising efforts through phonathons and ultimately through a meaningful and treasured Jubilee reunion and class gift. These days, Trish and John’s focus is on their three children and seven grandchildren in Buffalo and Boston. Katherine “Kat” Dugas Born and raised in Syracuse, with hard work, strong faith, and true grit, Kat has triumphed over a number of adversities throughout her lifetime. Thrust into a demanding role at the age of 8 due to her mother’s illness, she managed the care, meals, and housework for herself and her family. Kat has made her way from her first job on a farm stand in her early teens, to landing a temporary position at MassMutual where she has now advanced to her current role as Chief Operating Officer. It was at MassMutual that the idea of CBA for her sons came into being, when business owner Bob Waters ’66 suggested that she consider it for Tully. And so it was that Tully applied to CBA and was accepted! Kat will be the first to say that CBA would never have been an option without the scholarships and aid offered by the school. A few years later, younger son Trevor joined the ranks at Randall Road. The option and the availability of a CBA education transformed the lives of Kat, Tully, and Trevor Dugas. It launched Kat Dugas into the myriad volunteer opportunities at Christian Brothers Academy, culminating in the roles of President of Parents Club and Co-Chair of the Lasallian Auction and Dinner committee. Even though Tully ’11 and Trevor ’15 graduated years ago, Kat remains a faithful auction volunteer and lifetime promoter of the value of a CBA education. As a passionate supporter of the CBA family, Kat speaks often of the great benefits CBA has provided for her children, and her debt of gratitude for the opportunity. Kat rarely speaks of her personal hardships, rather she approaches each day with an enthusiastic smile, counting her blessings - which include her family’s association with Christian Brothers Academy.
Christian Brothers Academy Lasallian Educator of the year
“To touch the hearts of your students is the greatest miracle you can perform.” - St. John De La Salle
Much Love, Kathy, Vince, Natalie & Sophia Sportelli
Lasallian Educator of the Year Each school year, CBA faculty select a fellow teacher who exemplifies the ideals of St. John Baptist de La Salle. Eligible nominees must have been a Lasallian educator for at least five years, be actively involved in fostering the mission of Lasallian education, and demonstrate an enthusiasm for the Lasallian tradition.
Holly Dowd Holly Dowd has lived out the Lasallian virtues as an educator all of her adult life -- from her time at Boston College to teaching at Immaculate Conception in Fayetteville to CBA. Holly has taught both English and Religion and has helped students live out their faith in their daily lives. Teaching has been just a part of Holly’s work at CBA as she is also the Director of Enrollment Management. Holly’s enthusiasm and love for our school shines through all her presentations to prospective students. Holly encourages many students to consider and ultimately to choose to come to CBA. In speaking about the application process, a colleague said “One of the things that I admire most about Holly is her dedication to truly know each applicant. It reminds me of de La Salle's reflection on the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd demonstrates "great care for the sheep" by "knowing each one of them individually." Holly's affection for CBA students does not stop when they are admitted, but follows them throughout their time at CBA and beyond. Of all of the Lasallian Virtues, the most obvious is her unprecedented level of zeal. Holly has gone to great lengths to promote the CBA community and use her innovative ideas for our annual Open House to encourage attendance each year. Anyone who has worked with Holly would agree wholeheartedly that she is a community builder! Holly herself has said “I treasure every child who walks through those front doors.” As we all know very well, Holly lives out those words every day.
It’s all about better lives and more opportunities.
Programs that strengthen families strengthen our community. That’s why we support programs that focus on families. We recognize their tireless efforts and thank them for helping to improve the lives of parents and children in so many ways. KeyBank thanks Christian Brothers Academy for making a difference.

RAISE YOUR PADDLE: HOW IT WORKS. The teachers at CBA have many resources available to them, but sometimes there are things that are just a bit out of reach or beyond what the budget can handle. The auction committee and the administration concluded that “Raise Your Paddle” would be an ideal way to give the faculty/staff a chance to make their wishes come true. Each year ideas are provided to the committee from faculty and staff wish lists. Since its inception twelve years ago, we have made purchases and enhancements in the Technology, Math, Physical Education, Science and Engineering, and the Visual Arts departments. In addition, a fund has been established to provide access to service and mission trips for ALL CBA students. Your generosity is making a difference today!
How it works is very simple — Raise Your Paddle is essentially a mini-telethon during our Virtual Auction where bidders are given an opportunity to make a donation at various dollar amounts in order to make a straight cash (or credit) contribution for these causes. Mr. Matthew Keough will start us off with a short presentation during our live stream program on May 1st (check auction website https://bit.ly/cba2021auction for link to livestream), to describe the project and how it will impact the students at CBA. Our auctioneer, Jim Kirby will then start the bidding for donations at $2,500, then $1,000, then $500, then $250 and so on. YOUR donation will directly fund the project described above! THANK YOU in advance for your generosity!
Raise Your Paddle: CBA Wellness & Fitness Center Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) can affect adolescents directly and indirectly. Many adolescents’ social, emotional and mental well-being has been impacted by the pandemic. Among the everyday steps to prevent COVID-19, physical or social distancing is one of the best tools we have to avoid being exposed to the virus and to slow its spread. However, having to physically distance from someone you love like friends, family or your worship community, can be hard. Adolescents may struggle when asked to change their social routines such as foregoing in-person gatherings to consistently wear masks in public settings. The evidence is clear, physical activity can make you feel better, function better, and sleep better. A recent review of nearly 30 studies explored the benefits of physical exercise on psychological and developmental outcomes for adolescents (Belcher et al., February 2021). Consistently and cross-culturally, studies have found moderate to vigorous physical activity reduces anxiety, contributes to healthy brain functioning, and enhances overall well-being. Physical activity serves as a fundamental holistic key for adolescents, improving outcomes both psychologically and physically. CDC’s Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans, 2nd edition recommends that children and adolescents ages 6 to 17 years do 60 minutes or more of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity daily. However, studies show: • Less than one-quarter (24%) of children 6 to 17 years of age participate in 60 minutes of physical activity every day. • In 2017, only 26.1% of high school students participate in at least 60 minutes per day of physical activity on all 7 days of the previous week. • In 2017, 51.1% of high school students participated in muscle strengthening exercises (e.g., push-ups, sit-ups, weight lifting) on 3 or more days during the previous week. • In 2017, 51.7% of high school students attended physical education classes in an average week, and only 29.9% of high school students attended physical education classes daily. For all these reasons and more, CBA has chosen the renovation of the fitness center as our Raise Your Paddle objective for 2021. The focus of our efforts will include equipment and technology with fitness programs such as yoga, cardio, cycling and strength training. With your generous donations we hope to purchase a flat screen TV, software programs, fitness equipment, live streaming fitness classes, peloton bike, and peloton mirror for various fitness classes. The benefits of this newly renovated wellness/fitness center will be to reduce stress and to promote good overall mental and physical health. The center will be used during Physical Education classes too. This renovation would complete CBA’s overall vision of the collegiate design for the west wing of the first floor with the new Student Commons and new Learning Commons, all available to students after school until 6PM. Today’s environment and the experiences of the last year have created a need for improvements to our wellness offerings. A donation to Raise Your Paddle for the renovation of the Fitness Center will benefit each and every student at Christian Brothers Academy, providing opportunities for physical health that will not only be good for the body, but good for the mind as well. ** Please note, each year a portion of the Raise Your Paddle fund goes to support the service and mission trips, critical to the CBA experience, so that ALL CBA students will have access to these opportunities. No student should be denied the chance to be immersed in service at places like Camp Sunshine, or Summer Servants because they cannot afford the associated expenses.

2001. The Lake House on Canandaigua
Written up in Vogue magazine as one of “The 18 Most Anticipated Hotel Openings of 2020”; as well as Travel and Leisure magazine for one of “83 Hotel Openings to Look Forward to in 2020”. The Lake House is the first hotel of its kind on the banks of Canandaigua Lake. The property’s picturesque buildings and landscaped grounds are the perfect settings to make new, lasting memories of outdoor adventures and romantic getaways. There will be 124 impeccably designed guest rooms, a timber frame event barn, an outdoor pool, a destination spa, and a world-class wellness center. There is also a new signature restaurant, Rose Tavern, featuring locally-sourced ingredients and stellar wines from the Finger Lakes, as well as the return of the locally beloved lakeside Sand Bar. We suggest making the most of it with slow, sunny walks in the garden; long days spent sailing and swimming; cozy nights by the fire; and feasts of locally-grown ingredients and the internationally renowned wines produced just a short drive from here.
