Letter from the President

Dear CBA Family, This last December, in the Winter issue of Brothers Magazine, we presented the Annual Report Executive Summary for 2020-2021. Since that time we have worked to prepare a more broad report, in electronic format, of that Fiscal Year, including additional information and donor listings for 2020-21.

The enclosed e-report highlights the outstanding work of our advancement and finance teams. Despite the many challenges of COVID, our fundraising efforts broke records and our operations team provided all needed services!

Your amazing financial support and a substantiated, meaningful mission combined to bring about this successful year! With a worldwide pandemic in the background impacting our daily lives, we achieved these successes together.

My appreciation for your generosity of time, talent, and treasure knows no bounds! How I wish I could thank each of you in person. To that end, please know you are always welcome back at the CBA campus. I would love to give you a tour and show you the fabulous physical improvements.

And while it may not look the same, I am certain that you will note upon entering, that Christian Brothers Academy still feels like “home.”

CBA MISSION: Christian Brothers Academy is a Catholic Lasallian college preparatory high school and middle school serving young men and women of diverse faiths and cultures. The administration, faculty, staff, and the entire CBA family provide students with a safe, nurturing environment that fosters spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, and social growth. Celebrating the Jubilee Classes of 1970 and 1971 Continuing the tradition of commencement weekend at CBA, members from the Classes of 1970 & 1971 returned to campus June 4-6th to celebrate their 50th & 50+1 Jubilee Reunion.

This year’s Double Jubilee Reunion was jam-packed with great events and activities all weekend long. Friday’s celebratory dinner on campus was preceded by a campus tour by current CBA students who took the opportunity to show off what’s new and improved on campus, all while reassuring our alums that so much is still just as they left it.

They have each established a Class Scholarship — Class of 1970 and Class of 1971. These scholarships have been designated to a graduate

We were grateful for the opportunity to welcome our “Brothers” back and one of the best things about this weekend, is that it provides the perfect venue to renew and celebrate lifelong friendships in this great event for the Brotherhood – Jubilee Reunion 2021 was certainly a weekend to remember!

CBA awards financial aid or scholarships to more than 40% of its students. The aid typically ranges from $1,000 to more than $10,000.

The CBA Perpetual Scholarship Program is sponsored by alumni, families, and friends of the school, who wish to provide the incredible opportunity of a CBA education to those who might not be able to afford it. To name a Perpetual Scholarship, there is a minimum contribution of $50,000 required. The school is committed to working with individual donors to create a scholarship which will address their philanthropic intent. The school estimates that the invested funds will generate approximately 5% return, based on a 20-quarter average balance. Perpetual Scholarships are awarded to the student for the tenure of their time at CBA. Typically awarded to 7th graders, Perpetual Scholarship recipients are expected to maintain good academic and behavioral standing at the school and to communicate once each year with the sponsor of the scholarship.

CBA Endowment Growth June 2011 to June 2021 Thanks to the ongoing generosity of donors, the participation of new donors, a well-stewarded financial policy, and very positive stock market growth, the CBA endowment has grown from $7.5 million in 2010 to more than $18 million the end of June 2021.

Investing in the future of Christian Brothers Academy by building endowment, providing increasing support for scholarships and financial aid for CBA families, remains among the highest priorities of the school.

50 You can contribute more to your retirement plan.

70½ or 72 RMDs begin.

When you turn 50, you can contribute more to your 401(k) or other retirement plan.

59½ No penalty if you withdraw funds from your IRA. Starting at age 59½, you can take withdrawals without penalties, although it’s worth noting that taxes may be due based on the type of your IRA.

62 You can start receiving Social Security.

At 62, you’re able to start receiving Social Security income. However, doing so can reduce your monthly benefits by 30% versus waiting until your Social Security full retirement age (FRA).

That reduction is permanent, so talk to a financial professional to help you with this decision.

65 You can sign up for Medicare.

You’ll want to get the timing right on this. Medicare’s initial enrollment period lasts seven months, starting 3 months before you turn 65, and ending 3 months after the month you turn 65. Other details regarding your spouse and coverage may impact this requirement.

66 Full Retirement Age for people born 1943 –1954; 67 for people born after 1960 Full Retirement Age is the age when you are entitled to 100% of your Social Security benefits, which are determined by your lifetime earnings.

Are you still counting your birthdays? We hope so! Another trip around the sun is to be celebrated. Beyond the cake and candles, though, there are some milestone birthdays when you should consider your options and discuss key decisions with a financial professional.

You don’t have to begin collecting Social Security by age 70, but your benefit will not increase if you delay claiming past your 70th birthday.

Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) generally are minimum amounts that a retirement-plan account owner must withdraw annually starting with the year that you turn 72 (70 ½ if you reach 70 ½ before January 1, 2020).

73 and beyond...

According to the MIT AgeLab, a division of MIT that studies aging, retirement tends to get more complex as we age. Things you’ll likely need to address include, housing decisions, driving challenges, maintaining friendships, caregiving, organizing your most important info, and having fun and a purpose.

Understanding key birthdays may help you better prepare for certain retirement income and benefits. But perhaps more importantly, knowing key birthdays can help you avoid penalties that may be imposed if you miss the date.

Between the Corvette Raffle, the Lasallian Auction, and the Fund for CBA, we achieved record-breaking revenue. All hands were on deck from the Board members who generously gave of their time to produce the “All In” video, to the incredible folks who stepped up with Giving Day challenges on May 25, to the dozens who got caught up in the live Raise Your Paddle for the auction, great effort yielded great results.
