BUSINESS AVIATION MARKET 2023 NBAA-BACE Updates
Oct 18, 2023
Honeywell forecasts 8,500 new business jet deliveries valued at $278 billion over the next decade Honeywell’s 32nd annual Global Business Aviation Outlook forecasts are in line with the same 10-year forecast a year ago. Key findings in the 2023 Honeywell Global Business Aviation Outlook include: ▪ New business jet deliveries in 2024 are expected to be 10% higher than in 2023. Expenditures are expected to be 13% higher. ▪ Five-year purchase plans for new business jets are up two percentage points compared with last year’s survey; this surpasses 2019 levels and is equivalent to 19% of the current fleet. ▪ Fleet additions are up for the third year in a row, topping 3% of the fleet. ▪ New jet deliveries and expenditures over the next decade are projected to grow at a 2% average annual rate, in line with expected worldwide long-term economic growth. ▪ Nearly two-thirds of those surveyed expect to fly the same in 2024 versus 2023; 29% expect to fly more, and just 7% expect to fly less. ▪ Large, long-range and ultra-long-range aircraft classes are expected to account for about 69% of all expenditures of new business jets in the next five years. ▪ 4% of surveyed operators plan to dispose of an aircraft without replacement, which is double of the rate gleaned in 2022; most citing retirement or death of the aircraft owner.

Access to business aviation financing to increase over the next three years According to a new study commissioned by Airbus Corporate Jets (ACJ), eight out of ten (82%) U.S.-based business aviation financiers and private jet brokers expect access to business aviation financing to increase over the next three years, with 17% expecting it to stay the same and just 1% predicting a decline. Some 98% of survey respondents believe business aviation finance rates are still attractive, and it is still better to use credit when buying an aircraft as opposed to tying up capital. However, over the next five years, one in four (25%) of those surveyed expect a dramatic increase in the size of cash deposits used in the purchase of business jets, and a further 54% anticipate a slight rise, reducing the size of any debt secured to purchase an aircraft. Also, with fiscal and monetary policy uncertainty, 74% of survey respondents see the preference for fixed-rate transactions as opposed to floating rates to increase over the next five years amongst those using leases and credit to purchase business aircraft. Some 69% of business aviation financiers and brokers believe demand for operating leases – where the lessor takes the residual value risk buyer – will increase between now and 2028. The survey reveals that of the U.S. business aviation professionals interviewed, 85% expect sales of larger business jets to increase over the next five years and half (51%) believe this growth in demand will help them keep their residual value. However, 42% believe this will have no impact and valuations will move in line with the overall market. Nevertheless, because demand for larger business jets is increasing, 77% of those surveyed believe that securing financing for them will be easier compared to midsized and smaller jets. Finally, 68% believe that specialist lenders will increase their market share over mainstream banks.

Bombardier ramps up second test phase of EcoJet Blended Wing Body (BWB) research project As part of this new stage of the EcoJet research project, Bombardier is flying an 18-foot-wide test demonstrator. Bombardier’s EcoJet research project aims to reduce aircraft emissions by up to 50% through a combination of aerodynamic, propulsion, and other enhancements. EcoJet is a sustainability-focused research and technology initiative that started 15 years ago. This project has successfully materialized into a family of Blended Wing Body (BWB) test vehicles, with flight tests being conducted to develop and mature relevant technologies. The analysis of the data gathered from the 18-footwide prototype will allow Bombardier’s engineering team to perfect its knowledge of new aviation control laws that are adapted to the radically different BWB geometry, bound to be applied to more sustainable, future aircraft. 4 | business ELITE WINGS MAGAZINE
