COMMENT A greener greater future ahead! Business Aviation has been going through a bear market since the start of the year, amid increased uncertainty on higher interest rates, banking crisis, and recession fears with increased buyer hesitancy, slowing charter activity, higher pre-owned inventory available for sale, and lower pricing. But all these red indicators should not make us forget that this industry is backed by very strong fundamentals that will certainly drive healthier growth in the coming years. In the pre-owned market, when we put aside last year’s pandemic-driven record-high demand, the inventory remains fairly low for industry standards especially with most aircraft manufacturers still holding the highest number of aircraft backlogs in more than a decade. These backlogs will certainly be entertained in the short term with large fleet renewal programs from large business jet fleet operators. Thus, less than a month prior to the NBAA Business Aviation Convention and Exhibition, history was made in Business Aviation with the recordbreaking order from Netjets for up to 1,500 Cessna Citation Jets. In a world where legitimate concerns about the environmental impacts of air travel are particularly adopted by social media movements to draw negative attention to business jet travel by executives and celebrities. The industry needs to quickly counter these perceptions with a unified communication strategy showcasing how Business Aviation is leading the charge toward a net zero air travel industry with wide adoption of sustainability in all aspects of its business operations. Sustainability goes beyond environmental considerations and should include social and economic factors. Corporate aviation for instance is an essential enabler of the world economy and has proven critical during the pandemic to maintain the business continuity of many corporations of different sizes. Business aviation has and will continue to significantly contribute to all national, state, regional, and local-level economies, providing underserved areas with one-time ad-hoc business service solutions. A strong and unified industry communication will also enable the industry to address its ability to attract talent. The global shortage of pilots, air traffic controllers, and maintenance engineers is further exacerbated by the lack of diversity that should be addressed in all aspects of the industry. CARBON OFFSETTING PROGRAMS

THE GLOSSARY OF BUSINESS AVIATION SUSTAINABILITY

CARBON FOOTPRINT ASSESSMENT A Sustainability program requires first a solid assessment of operations’ carbon footprint. To maximize integrity total gallons of fuel used each month should be privileged vs simply using aircraft flown hours

SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL (SAF) Sustainable Aviation Fuel – SAF - is any next-generation aviation fuel, made from 100% renewable waste and residue raw 7 | ELITE WINGS MAGAZINE materials, like used cooking oil. SAF highly reduces greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to fossil jet fuel and can be used as a direct replacement (drop-in) for fossil jet fuel as it is chemically similar. It is fully SAF compatible with existing jet engines and fueling infrastructure, requiring zero additional investment into them. SAF has the potential to reduce net CO2 lifecycle emissions by more than 75% compared to conventional jet fuel The current issue with SAF is the limited availability and logistical challenges that can be solved through Book & Claim solutions as they effectively transfer sustainability claims to final customers.

Offsets are generated through carbon credits from projects that reduce or avoid carbon emissions, such as reforestation projects and renewable energy initiatives. Project examples include helping make the transition from fossil-based power generation to renewable sources and projects like the protection of existing forests.

AIRCRAFT EFFICIENCY Newer generation more efficient jets can bring a large contribution to reducing Carbon and Non-Carbon emissions together with the reduction in the noise footprint. Over time the improvement rate in Business Jet Engines specific fuel consumption (SFC) was roughly 1% per year.

ELCTRIFICATION & HYDROGEN Sustainable Aviation Fuels play a major role in the decarbonization of aviation, especially when it comes to long-range missions. Air Transport electrification (eg eVTOLs, eCommuter) or hydrogen will contribute at a shorter range Electrical power and propulsion systems will lead the way for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM), enabling silent short and vertical take-off and landing capabilities while lowering emissions and reducing fuel consumption.

CONNECTIVITY QUICK GUIDE

8 | ELITE WINGS MAGAZINE

THE CONNECTIVITY ECOSYSTEM NETWORKS Business aviation connectivity relies on the availability of communication networks covering the geographic area of operation. There are two types of networks used in aviation: ▪ Satellites-based networks (SATCOM) ▪ Ground stations-based networks called Air-ToGround (ATG).

AIRCRAFT HARDWARE A large offering of cabin connectivity hardware is available in the market for either line-fit installation by the aircraft manufacturer or as a retrofit by MRO centers. The hardware can be divided into three main sub-systems, the antenna system including the radome and steering electronics, the avionics transceivers allowing for data reception and transmission to the antenna, and the cabin subsystem allowing for laptops, tablets, and smartphones to connect to the cabin network

Cabin Connectivity installation is available from either the aircraft manufacturer for installation prior to aircraft delivery (Line-fit) or from a network of sales and installation providers in the after-market (Retrofit). These installation centers develop and install aircraft connectivity hardware through Supplemental Type Certificate (STC). In opposition to the Line-fit market where the offering is very limited by the aircraft manufacturer, the retrofit market offers a large choice of solutions and should be considered even for newly delivered aircraft.

SEVICE PROVIDERS Most communication networks rely on business aviation dedicated service providers. These service providers offer tailored plans typically on a monthly subscription basis, as well as 24/7 technical support, billing, and value-added services to help manage usage and optimize bandwidth. These added-value services usually include WIFI Call and text apps, Acceleration and compression technology, Ground to Air Call service.

LIGHT MTOW < 7,000 lbs With their large mission versatility and efficiency, Light helicopters are the most popular helicopters in the civil market. The Light category is divided into two sub-categories: single and Twin-engine. The primary differences between single and twin-engine helicopters lie in their power and speed capabilities. Twinengine helicopters provide greater overall power and speed when compared to their single-engine counterparts. The engine redundancy is especially valuable when flying over water, densely populated areas, or inhospitable terrains.

INTERMEDIATE 7,000 lbs < MTOW < 10,000 lbs The Intermediate category combines light helicopter versatility with increased cabin size and range capabilities making them perfect for a large number of missions ranging from Emergency Medical Services to Search & Rescue and offshore operations.

MEDIUM & SUPER-MEDIUM 10,000 lbs < MTOW < 20,000 lbs Developed primarily to support the offshore oil and gas industry, the Medium and Super-Medium category helicopters have proven very popular in corporate transportation applications as their large and unobstructed cabins can embody the hallmarks of elegance, style, and sophistication. These helicopters can often be equipped with state-of-the-art telecommunications and entertainment systems, dedicated workspaces, and refreshment and stowage areas.

HEAVY 20,000 lbs < MTOW Designed primarily for the long-range offshore oil and gas market, Heavy helicopters are very popular on the VVIP market for government officials and heads of state transportation.

THE BIZLINERS ECOSYSTEM MODIFIED AIRLINERS

Green BBJ enroute to outfitting

Bizliners are commercial airliners modified for a lower passenger count usage in business aviation missions. They are mainly used for government transportation including Head of state (~45% of the market), private including corporate operations (~40%), and charter operations (~15%). Since most regional and narrow-body ranges are fuel limited at lower payload, OEMs or completion centers will certify Auxiliary Fuel Tanks (ACT) installation on these jets to increase their range capability. Boeing in collaboration with General Electric launched Boeing Business Jets in 1996 followed by Airbus who entered the market in 1997 with the launch of Airbus Corporate Jets business unit. Bizliners have a large number of benefits in comparison with purpose-built business jets, notably their large cabin and baggage capability but also some drawbacks in terms of performance, mission capabilities, and versatility.

COMPLETION CENTERS A Boeing 787 at Greenpoint Technologies, a Safran Company, for interior completion

In contrast to purpose-built Business jets that are delivered ready for operations straight from aircraft OEMs. Bizliners are delivered “green” (generally) not painted with only a green primer application. The interior is literally empty and requires design and outfitting at a completion center. Completion centers often offer customized interior design, engineering, and certification of the interior outfitting and additional modifications such as airstairs, connectivity, In-Flight entertainment systems, and even airborne protection systems for government and VVIP aircraft. Completion centers will also perform the interior installation and final certification. Completion centers also specialized in Bizliners in-service maintenance and follow-on cabin retrofits.

INTERIOR DESIGN

A Lufthansa Technik, Middle-Eastern Inspired BBJ 777-9 VIP cabin concept London-based ALTEA offers Bizliners completion management and VVIP interior design

Bizliners offer the ultimate customization opportunity for having a jet crafted absolutely down to the last detail in accordance with customers’ needs. Interior designers will design the optimum cabin through a thorough understanding of client needs, cultural requirements, and expectations. Although most completion centers offer their internal design team, independent interior designers are often hired by customers or completion centers. These independent interior designers will not only bring their experience in aviation but also from other luxury markets such as yachts or luxury homes and or hotel designs.

COMPLETION MANAGEMENT Although the completion process may seem complex, customers can rely on completion managers who will work closely with the interior designer and completion center, to transition design intent into a cabin that is comfortable, functional, and reliable, and then oversee the entire outfitting process to ensure that client expectations, budget and quality standards are met.

SUMMER AVIATION SUMMIT

MONTREAL 2023 With ever-evolving technology breakthroughs and more and more sophisticated solutions, it pays to understand each other visions and how we are turning the Business Aviation industry challenges into innovation-led opportunities. ELITE WINGS teamed up with OOAK AGENCY to bring a unique Business Aviation event for the summer of 2023. The Summer Aviation Summit (SAS) is hosted in beautiful Montreal, Canada. The city is recognized globally as one of the world’s most important Business Aviation industry clusters.

26 | ELITE WINGS MAGAZINE

The day was kicked off by Sebastien Lavoie, Chief Economist of the Laurentian Bank, who confirmed what many believe, that inflation has been a critical challenge. Still, it is cooling, and interest rates are stabilizing in key business aviation locations. However, economic uncertainty remains, and a modest recession is anticipated across North America in 2024. However, his main concern for the industry is the climate transition challenge. According to Sebastien, the global peak in oil demand is predicted to arrive sooner in 2028 as electrical vehicle sales surge.

STATE OF THE INDUSTRY THE OEMs PANEL The OEMs panel during the State of the Industry period was a great opportunity to exchange information on the OEM’s Market outlooks. While most of the peak figures experienced during the post-pandemic travel boom are returning to normal, OEMs still see significantly higher flight hours compared to 2019. Gueric Ranchon, Manager of the Bombardier market analytics and insight team, stated that flight hours for the Canadian OEM’s fleet were up 18% compared to 2019. A strong order backlog, continued business aviation activity, and low aircraft inventory are trends across all the OEMs. Richa Gupta, senior director of strategic planning and business development of Pratt & Whitney Canada, confirmed that the company had seen powerplant utilization stay 15-20% higher than pre-pandemic figures. «It’s important to keep the value proposition of unscheduled availability in mind» she affirms. Sean McGeough, Head of Airbus Corporate Jets (ACJ) North America shared a very insightful market study commissioned by ACJ in April 2023, showing 87% of senior executives from U.S.-based companies think their business aircraft usage will increase in the next five years and 79% of them affirmed growing focus on sustainability will be the main reason for future aircraft upgrade.

28 | ELITE WINGS MAGAZINE

STATE OF THE INDUSTRY THE PRE-OWNED MARKET PANEL The preowned market is increasingly buoyant, with overinflated pandemic prices falling. Sameer Adam, CEO of aviation consultancy XINATIS, warned that while the sector is moving again, «the biggest issue is the supply chain» with basic spare parts such as windshields or tires still challenging to source. Thomas Fisselier, Director, Pre-Owned Aircraft Acquisition and Sales Support provided a very insightful overview of Bombardier’s large international service centers network and how they are supporting worldwide pre-owned transactions with key capabilities such as Pre-buy inspections, major avionics upgrades, interior refurbishments, and exterior paint. Thomas also expounded the virtues of Bombardier’s new Certified Pre-Owned program, which gives buyers the option to acquire an upgraded pre-owned aircraft directly from the OEM. Nicole Kappos, Director of Aftermarket Services at Pratt & Whitney Canada provided an overview of the pre-owned market, showing Turboprops inventory at an all-time low with no signs of short-term increase. Nicole also highlighted some new trends in the Turboprops market as the large adoption of the pay-by-the-hour program with 60% of PT6E on the PC-12NGX enrolled under Pratt & Whitney ESP™ Platinium program. From right to left, Thomas Fisselier (BOMBARDIER), Nicole Kappos (PRATT & WHITNEY) , Sameer Adam (XINATIS), and Moderator Abdelmajid Jlioui.

INNOVATIONS PANEL TECHNOLOGY

SUMMER AVIATION SUMMIT

From right to left, Shannon Gill (F/LIST), Fabian Lombard (SATCOM DIRECT), Stephen McCullough (BOMBARDIER), Puja Mahajan (AZZERA), David Vanderzwaag (AIRHAWKE), and Moderator Viswanath Tata. The technology panel saw inspiration in increased efficiency and sustainability with Puja Mahajan, co-founder and CEO of Azzera, kicking off the intriguing session. Mahajan explained how Azerra was born out of necessity as operators seek to comply with the varied international requirements and mandates on reporting carbon emissions. Schemes can be slow, and a lack of technology limits reporting capabilities. Azerra has simplified the process through Celeste, a digital compliance management platform. «We have to optimize untapped potential,» stated Steve McCullough, senior vice president of engineering and product development, speaking about the Bombardier Ecojet. The futuristic-looking blended wing airframe is shaped to create lift, and when combined with additional fuel burn reduction technologies could reduce future jets carbon emissions by up 50%. «Taking sustainability out of the powerplant and bringing it into the cabin motivated F/LIST to research and develop a portfolio of bio-based products,» explained Shannon Gill, Managing Director of F/LIST Georgia LLC. The innovative products are complemented by the technological ingenuity of the F/LIST Shapeshifter concept, which uses technology to defy physics as it makes the seemingly impossible possible.

30 | ELITE WINGS MAGAZINE

Wood bends, and stone curves originating multi-purpose monuments that create more space and save weight in the cabin. The design behind these elements is astounding. David Vanderzwaag, CEO of the design engineering firm AIRHAWKE mesmerized the audience, suggesting that future cabin concepts could be supported by optimizing artificial intelligence to generate CAD drawings and models automatically. «As the AI learns iteratively, the concepts can be upscaled to improve efficiencies,» said Vanderzwaag. AIRHAWKE is already using augmented reality to increase installation efficiency. Fabien Lombard, OEM business manager at Satcom Direct, shared how SD is optimizing data through an intelligent ecosystem that manages the incredible amounts of data generated by airframes. SD data solutions support connectivity, monitor aircraft performance, increase situational awareness, and enhance operations. Lombard stressed that with its portfolio of software, hardware including its recently launched Plane Simple® antenna series, and ground infrastructure, SD is the only satcom business that provides genuinely global connectivity for business and government aviation and is constantly seeking to raise industry standards through its technology.
