Nfts, 3D art & other projects Exploring the third dimension…
Individual project : Digitising Traditional arts

This is one of my college projects in which we were instructed to ideate a way in which the indian art forms of storytelling could be conveyed in a virtual/digital way. The one depicted here is called a kavad. It is a storytelling box which looks like a shrine. The panels of the kavad are painted by the craftsman and then the narrator narrates the story to the people. I was planning on making a real kavad using wooden panels and door hinges but the idea evolved according to the situation we faced during the pandemic. The kavad can be virtually viewed and the texts can help narrate the whole story depicted in the kavad. The 3d model and all the illustrations are my original work.

(more information available in the documentation)
What does a Kavad look like? It has several wooden panels hinged together, painted with scenes from the stories. Outermost panels usually have the guardians of the story painted on them. The storyteller opens each panel and tells the story depicted there. After opening and closing all the folds, finally, when all the panels are open, reveals the sanctum – where the image of the main deity is placed.
It is like an audio-visual journey from outside to the inner world. You can also read it as a journey from outside the temple to its sanctum or Garbha Griha. After all, it is a shrine.

3DS MAX: gREEN lANTERN’S RING
Green Lantern is a superhero who has a ring which allows him to make green colored constructs using his imagination. The ring is considered one of the most powerful weapons in the history of dc comics. Throughout the years, there have been many different iterations of the ring. This is my take on the Green Lantern’s ring. I have tried to give it an illuminated background and smooth metallic surface. The ring was modelled in 3ds Max 2021 and then rendered on Blender 3.0.

3DS MAX: hEADPHONES
Among the random objects we tried to model when we first learnt 3ds Max, this was one of them. I carry a set of headphones everywhere I travel. It has become a part of my style in recent days. Although the headphones I have made are different from the ones I carry. The headphones were 3d modelled and rendered in 3ds max with a pastel background.

Blender : 3d Character designing
A few months ago, I made a 2D character of myself with my favourite outfit and bandana on it. When I learnt 3D i tried to replicate the character into a 3D model which is shown in picture. I added different levels of roughness and metallic texturing in the rings and other jewelry. The character was modelled and rendered in Blender 3.0. The character can be further rigged and animated as well.

RENDER ENGINE : CYCLES
This is a 3d set design which can be used in animating 3d characters in a scenario instead of making a whole environment. These techniques are used in real life filmmaking. I have attempted to illustrate an evening scenario at an old fashioned diner.

Rough sketches and references
Reference image by client.
After some rough sketches, the client finalised one of the sketches and instructed on adding some more attributes to it like horns and wing nail.
Blender: Gothic Goblet
During the internship, I was given a reference image by a client and asked to make a 3d model of it with minor changes. This was an NFT, the ownership of which would be with the client. This is just an instance of my skills in 3d softwares.

A client requested for a low poly bust wearing a shiny metallic puffer jacket under blue and pink ambient light. This is how the result turned out to be.
Process and render iterations
I started with some rough sketches but not much could be explored on paper so i directly started modelling the NFT. The iterations were necessary in order to show the client what kind of an nft they had in mind. The iterations were made by changing the metallic and roughness of the assets.

WORLD/ENVIRONMENT BUILDING. Story building. cHARACTER DESIGN. WEAPON DESIGN. cHARACTER RIGGING AND ANIMATION.
The whole project is built around a zombie apocalypse scenario. I am planning on designing 3d characters and 3d environment around this scenario. There will be more than 10 characters which include 3 main characters and rest are zombies. Once the characters are rigged and ready for animation, I will render out good shots from the scenes and possibly make a trailer of the whole action in the end.
CHARACTER IDEATION and rough sketches
I made the character iterations in side profiles since these are quick to sketch and they give me a bunch of ideas in short amount of time. I made an adult version of one of my friends and it seemed like a very mature character among the other characters. Even if these iterations can’t be used as the main characters, they can always be used as side character.
Finalised main characters
Based on the rough sketches I added a weapon of choice to each of the characters
CHARACTER a: bHAVRAJ
CHARACTER C: AKANKSHA
CHARACTER B: PIYUSH
NOTE: These characters actually exist. I asked my friends whether they were interested in being a 3d character in my story. The outfits in the illustration are the choices of outfits they’d like to wear in my story. The character C wasn’t in my rough sketches since I directly sketched her out on Adobe Photoshop.

weapons
An axe which is modified as a hammer-axe in a foundry later in the story. The glowing parts of the weapon are burning hot with nuclear radiation. Cuts through the zombie skin like butter.
An Ice axe which is later modified with nuclear power when the characters find an abandoned laboratory. The nuclear battery electrically charges up the edges of the axe which makes it easy for the user eliminate a bunch of zombies at the same time. The electricity immediately makes the zombies brain dead.
Promotional Art
3d print
The promotional art was later on printed with a height of 20 cm. The rough texture is because of the sanding that was done on the model, in order to remove the 3d print texture.

Visual narratives The art of storytelling through visuals
Objectives
1.
2.
Analyse how visual narratives are used across a range of media to tell stories.
Explore the codes and conventions relevant to visual narratives.
3.
4.
Present a visual narrative to an identified audience.
Evaluate the effectiveness of storytelling in a visual narrative.
Storytelling using visual media is called visual narratives. The story may be told using still photography, illustration, video, and can be enhanced using sound effects and vfx.
PRINCIPLES: 1. Relevancy 2. Sensory 3. Authenticity 4. Archetype
TYPES: 1. Static 2. Dynamic 3. Interactive FORMS: movies, tv shows, puppetry, music videos, illustrations, still photography, comic books, etc.

Visual narrative
My theme, character and timeline
Since we were allowed to select characters and stories which already exist. I chose a well known character of DC comics known as The Flash. I took an existing character but I made my own version of the story.
My story
The Flash is a metahuman who possesses superhuman speed and has the ability to manipulate time to his will. I made a generic story of the character where his wife Iris West Allen gets kidnapped by the villain named Trickster and Flash rescues her after defeating the trickster.
My storyboard
Storyboarding is one of the most crucial part of planning a visual narrative. It helps plan the different camera angles to be used in a visual and also how the story is supposed to unfold.
● ● ●
The Flash is searching for Iris then suddenly he sees a lady calling for help while falling off a building. She looks like Iris. The Flash rushes to catch her. He rotates his arms to form a tornado for a smooth landing for Iris. He catches her. But wait…IT’S NOT IRIS. IT WAS ONE OF THE DUPLICATE DUMMIES FROM THE TRICKSTER.
● ● ●
After Iris (Flash’s Wife) gets kidnapped by the trickster so this is the fight scene and how the flash wins… Flash races to punch the trickster but it was merely a duplicate sheet of him. The trickster comes from behind and tries to beat the Flash with a rod but Flash is fast enough to sense and stop his attack. Flash is angrily moving towards the trickster and then something clicks under his foot!!! What is it? A mine? A bomb?
● ● ●
IT WAS A POWER DAMPENING CUFF!!! The Flash is unable to use his powers. The trickster uses his famous catchphrase - TRICKED YA!!! The Flash tries to free himself but is unable to do so. He tries to punch trickster but he evades his attack very easily.
● ● ●
Trickster punches the Flash making him even angrier than ever. His wife is being held hostage by the Trickster. He is usable to use his powers. What is can he do?! The Flash, with every cell in his body, tries to vibrate. He’s able to vibrate at an extreme frequency at which his molecules are able to pass through the molecules of the power dampening cuffs. He frees himself. The story ends with the Flash handing the police over to the Trickster and Iris and Barry are reunited.
My final illustrations
After doing the storyboard I made a few final illustrations for the comic layer by layer and colored it.
Other Explorations
It’s important to show your mistakes and stupid decisions. Maybe they were neither a mistake nor a stupidity…
Trying to think of story origins. I went with the word ‘Dreams’.
Trying out the character design for the kid.
Rough Sketches
This is how my first story was going to be… 1. The main character is a kid. He is sleeping. He sees a dream. It’s really vivid. He dreams that he is an adult male stuck in the middle of a dessert. What is happening? 2. He opens his eyes in real life but end up waking up in his dream situation. He is a grown up man. He is deserted. No one is around. He doesn’t know what to do. He walks and walks for hours. 3. The story shall end when he finds a way back to his reality.

Contextual studies Designing a creative family tree
Family tree (first iteration)
02
cONTEXTUAL STUDIES An innovative approach towards creating your own family tree The idea was to make two family trees emanating from two different branches illustrating the maternal and paternal sides of my family which merge at the center by the two branches tying a knot (depicting my parents’ marriage). Either a fruits would ripen at the middle of the knot or a swing would hang from both the branches depicting me.
Family tree (second iteration)
Flowcharts are the easiest to understand any structural body, like an organisational structure or even a family. So I tried to make a family tree out of one.

Packaging design Solving everyday problems with packaging design.
Hex can
ideation
I chose to redesign the packaging of tin cans. At first I tried to relate my everyday problems with cans in order to better understand the scope for improvisation. There were several problems like not knowing the amount of beverage left in the can while drinking and the fizz escaping the can because it cannot be closed. Once I was aware of the problem, it wasn’t that hard to find the solution as well.
Some rough sketches illustrating the usage of the can and the pivoted rubber lid. The reason I chose for my can to be hexagonal shaped was to get the customers interested in something new.
The 3d model was entirely made and rendered on sketchup and Vray. I used the branding of Carlsberg since the colours and the minimal typographic logo seemed suitable for the HEX CAN.

3D prototype
I created a quick prototype by sticking pieces of sunboard to a can and taping it using a masking tape to test out how it would feel to hold a hexagonal can. It turned out to be ergonomically better than the normal round cylindrical cans.

Label design WARNING!!! The next part is going to be delicious
Nutella is a sweetened hazelnut cocoa spread made by Ferrero, an Italian company that's the third-largest chocolate producer in the world. It was originally created in Italy during World War II when baker Pietro Ferrero added ground hazelnuts to a chocolate spread to make up for a shortage of cocoa in the country.
but.
Did you Notice their logo?
Concept note Nutella has a very elaborate label with various elements on the front like a set of hazelnuts, skim milk, and a buttering knife with nutella on it with bread. According to my speculation, minimalism might’ve been the key to a better label design than the present one. The color of the nutella spread could be used as the background color for a transparent label with the white colored print of the label with a red accent color.
And this is the Font Board. I noticed there were 3 different fonts used in the nutella label different for headings and the main contents of the label. These things are important because when we remake the label of nutella, it is better to stick to the basics.

Branding & identity Building your own style guide!!!
I chose McDonalds as my case study for the brand style. I identified the colors, the fonts and the type of graphics they use for promoting their brand. (more information available in the documentation)
I did some research on the vision and mission of the brand as well. I also did the PESTEL analysis which includes the political, economical, socio cultural, ecological and legal factors which affect McDonalds business. That helped me understand what are corporate identity, corporate philosophy, corporate values and mission statement.
I studied the brand manual of ARCH College of Design and Business. A brand manual has a lot more information than a style guide per say. I was actually surprised since the manual was quite elaborate. It had almost all the key information about Arch’s brand identity, the vision, the mission, key differentiators and also the competitors.
I made my own style guide on the brand ebauche art which is an instagram account where I post daily rough sketches since ebauche literally means incomplete or unfinished art.
These are the colors that I chose for my brand. I decided to choose coral red and green because they’re one of my favourite colors and they compliment each other. Same goes for dark grey and light grey. I didn’t want to choose black and white since I thought that would make the whole brand style monotonous.
I’ve added instructions on the usage of the colors, fox instance, the light green color has to be used in a very small percentage of the whole page. And the small leaf on the top of E of the ebauche art should always be of this color.
I used the classic atari font for my headings since I find them to be a bit retro which goes with my liking. And for the content, subtitles and captions I’ve chosen the futura md BT font. Gives it a simpler look.
These are primary and alternative logos. I’ve shown the logo black and white background as well.
This is a clear cut instruction on how the logo should or should not be used. When a graphic designer is appointed to rebrand for a company or a client he should know to what level can he make changes to. For example the small leaf at the top of the E is not supposed to level with the letter E since its an accent mark.
