The opposition between life and death was not so absolute to the ancient Mexicans as it is to us. Life extended into death, and vice versa. Death was not the natural end of life but one phase of an infinite cycle. Life, death, and resurrection were stages of a cosmic process which repeated itself continuously. Life had no higher function than to flow into death, its opposite and complement; and death in turn, was not an end to itself: Man fed the insatiable hunger of life with his death.

Death is present in our fiestas, our games, our loves, and our thoughts.

We are seduced by death. Death will obliterate all of us, beginning with those who ignore it or pretend to ignore it.

That is the reason that our popular images always poke fun at life, affirming the nothingness and insignificance of human existence.

Death lacks meaning for the modern Mexican but they have not eliminated from their daily lives. The Mexican is familiar with death, jokes about it, caresses it, sleeps with it, celebrates it; it is one of his favorite toys and his most steadfast love. True, there is perhaps as much fear in his attitude as in that of others, but at least death is not hidden away: he looks at it face to face, with impatience, disdain, or irony: “If they are

Para los antiguos mexicanos la oposición entre muerte y vida no era tan absoluta como para nosotros. La vida se prolongaba en la muerte. Y a la inversa. La muerte no era el fin natural de la vida, sino fase de un ciclo infinito.

Vida, muerte y resurrección, eran estadios de un proceso cósmico, que se repetía insaciable. La vida no tenía función más alta que desembocar en la muerte, su contrario y complemento; y la muerte, a su vez, no era un fin en sí; el hombre alimentaba con su muerte la voracidad de la vida, siempre insatisfecha.

Está presente en nuestras fiestas, en nuestros juegos, en nuestros amores y en nuestros pensamientos.

La muerte nos seduce. Ella acabará por suprimirnos a todos y en primer término a los que viven ignorándola o fingiendo que la ignoran.

Por eso nuestras representaciones populares son siempre burla de la vida, afirmación de la nadería e insignificancia de la humana existencia.

Para el mexicano moderno la muerte carece de esa significación. Pero ello no nos lleva a eliminarla de nuestra vida diaria. El mexicano la frecuenta, la burla, la acaricia, duerme con ella, la festeja, es uno de sus juguetes favoritos y su amor más permanente. Cierto, en su actitud hay quizá tanto miedo como en la de los otros; mas al menos no se

death is profoundly connected to the identity of mexico and it is this special relationship that danc e of the dead invites us to discover ... touch of fantasy and generally inspired

by Catholic baroque iconography that also regularly feature ghastly looking children, marginals and eccentrics.

In 1998, René Castillo and Antonio Urrutia’s film “Sin sostén” was part of the official selection at Cannes. A few weeks later, while Castillo was holidaying in France, he discovered the Annecy Festival. In June 2001, his next film, “Down to the Bone”, was awarded at Annecy before going on to win at both Ottawa and Zagreb.

The programme we have concocted here presents a selection of the best stop-motion films to come out of Mexico over the past 15 years. Even though Lourdes Villagómez’s “Síndrome de línea blanca” stands out from the rest for its radiant photography and use of pixilation, the main topic of these films is still pretty dark.

Since then, Mexican animation has been providing festivals all over the world with a quantity of puppet films, suggesting that a real “national school” is forming, characterised by films that focus on death and cultivate a spirit that is close to Surrealism. Rita Basulto, Sofia Carrillo, Luis Felipe Hernández Alanis and Karla Castañeda have all directed dark stories, emphasised with a

con un toque de fantasía, y generalmente inspiradas por la iconografía católica barroca que también regularmente muestra niños macabros, marginales y excéntricos.

En 1998, el corto de René Castillo y Antonio Urritia “Sin Sostén” fue parte de la selección oficial en el Festival de Cannes. Unas semanas después, mientras Castillo estaba de vacaciones en Francia, descubrió el Festival de Animación de Annecy. En Junio del 2001, su siguiente corto “Hasta los Huesos” fue premiado en Annecy, antes de ganar Ottawa y Zagreb.

El programa que hemos desarrollado para el festival, presenta una selección de lo mejor de los cortometrajes stop-motion que han salido de Mexico en los últimos 15 años. Aunque el corto de “Síndrome de línea blanca” de Lourdes Villagómez se separa un poco del resto por su radiante fotografía y el uso de pixilación, la principal característica de esta selección sigue siendo bastante sombría.

Desde entonces, la animación Mexicana ha brindado a los festivales alrededor del mundo un gran número de cortos animados con marionetas, lo que sugiere que una tendencia nacional se está gestando, caracterizada por temas relativos a la muerte y que cultiva un espíritu cercano al surrealismo. Rita Basulto, Sofía Carrillo, Luis Felipe Hernández Alanis, y Karla Castañeda han dirigido historias oscuras,

Antonio Urritia was born in Guadalajara.

Although engineer by profession, he is a filmmaker by heart. His first short “De tripas, corazón” (From the gut) was nominated to the Oscar, Academy Award for best short. His next short, “Sin sostén” competed for the Palm D’Or at Cannes. Currently, he is member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the US and Mexico.

Antonio Urrutia nació en Guadalajara, Jalisco. Ingeniero de profesión pero apasionado del cine. Empezó a realizar cortos donde fue nominado al Oscar como mejor cortometraje con “De tripas, Corazón.”

“Sin sostén” fue su siguiente trabajo y compitió por la Palma de Oro en Cannes.

Actualmente, Antonio Urrutia es miembro de la Academia de Artes y Ciencias Cinematrográficas en E.U.A. y Mexico.

After a while of amusement and enjoyment, the man finds out that is not so bad to be death.

Un hombre llega al mundo de los muertos, en donde es recibido por un gusano, calacas sonrientes y la mismísima Catrina. Después de un rato de diversión y coqueteo, el hombre descubre que, después de todo, estar muerto no es tan malo.

René Castillo is a Mexican animator specialized in Stop Motion. He has won over 50 international awards with this shorts and a nomination for the Palm D’Or in Cannes. He did with Antonio Urrutia the short film called “Sin Sostén” (Without support, 1998) which won the Ariel (Mexican Academy Award) for best Animated Short. Afterwards, he coproduced, wrote, animated, and directed “Hasta los huesos” (Down to the bones, 2001). He is currently directing, producing, and writing his first feature film called “Thingdom.”

René Castillo es un animador mexicano especializado en StopMotion. Sus cortometrajes han ganado más de 50 premiosinternacionales, incluida la nominación a la Palma de Oro en Cannes. Tells the imaginary biography of a girl that gets killed by a car and awakens, like a princess in a fairy tale, looking for her happy ending through domestic bliss with appliances. “Línea Blanca” means “White line” that is a generic term for electric domestic appliances.

Narra la biografía imaginaria de una niña que muere atropellada por un coche y despierta como una princesa de cuento de hadas en busca de su final feliz rodeada de electrodomésticos de línea blanca.

Lourdes Villagómez studied Communication in Mexico City and Experimental Animation in CalArts at Los Angeles.

Her works have been shown in over fifty international festivals, galleries and museums. Currently she is a member of the Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte (National Art Creator by ConacultaMéxico) and lives in Madrid.

Lourdes Villagómez estudió Comunicación en la ciudad de México y Animación Experimental en CalArts en Los Angeles.

Su trabajo ha sido selección oficial de más de 50 festivales internacionales, galerías, y museos. Actualmente, es miembro del Sistema Nacional de Creadores de Arte y vive en Madrid.

Sofia Carrillo holds a Bachelor of Media Arts from the University of Guadalajara, she has worked in the areas of Animation and Art Direction. “Fuera de Control” (Out of Control), participated in national and international festivals such as Annecy, Sitges, and Sundance. “Prita Noire,” was awarded the Ariel (Mexican Academy Award) for Best Animated Short Film (2012). With “La Casa Triste” (The Sad House) she also won several international awards. She loves telling an emotional story through ordinary objects, as if the objects come to life and tell us their past. She is currently working in “The Tailor’s Heart” and her new animated short called “Cerulia.”

Es Licenciada en Artes Audiovisuales por la Universidad de Guadalajara, se ha desempeñado en las áreas de Animación y Dirección de Arte. Su corto, “Fuera de Control” participó en festivales internacionales como Annecy, Sitges y Sundance. “Prita Noire” fue acreedor al Premio Ariel como mejor cortometraje de animación (2012).

Con su proyecto “La Casa Triste” también recibió múltiples premios. Le gusta narrar historias muy emotivas a través de objetos ordinarios, como si los objetos cobraran vida y nos contaran su pasado. Es becaria actual de Fonca-Conaculta Coinversiones con el proyecto de animación “El Corazón del sastre.” Actualmente, está trabajando en su nuevo proyecto animado “Cerulia.”

Juan José Medina has a degree from the School of Arts and Media of the University of Guadalajara. His short “Octavo Día, la creación” (Eight Day, the Creation) received several international awards. “Jaulas” received the Ariel (Mexican Academy Award) for best animated short in addition to several international awards. In 2010, he started Outik Animation Studio in Guadalajara.

He is currently a member of the National System of Art Creators.

Juan José Medina es egresado de la Escuela de Artes Plásticas y de la Escuela de Medios, ambas de la Universidad de Guadalajara. “El Octavo Día, la Creación” ha recibido diversos reconocimientos internacionales. “Jaulas” recibió el Ariel al mejor cortometraje animado además de diversos premios internacionales. Luis Felipe Hernández Alanis, a selftaught animator, received a scholarship in 2003 to study Stop Motion in Barcelona where he completed his first short “Esfera” (Sphere). “Martyris” received several international awards.

Currently, he is working in “Cuentos Cultos Animales” (Mythological Animal Tales), a series of shorts about ancient Aztec sacred animals and their relationship with plants and minerals.

Luis Felipe Hernández Alanis, animador autodidacta en sus inicios. En 2003 recibe una Beca para estudiar animación Stop Motion en Barcelona realizando su primer corto “Esfera.” “Martyris” recibió múltiples premios a nivel internacional.

Actualmente se encuentra trabajando en “Cuentos Cultos Animales,” una serie de historias de animales mitológicos y su relación con el reino vegetal y mineral.

Karla Castañeda is Stop Motion animation director. Her first short “Jacinta” was created from a recurring image she had when she was little.

It was the image of hands taking her heart from the chest. “La Noria” got the director her second Ariel (Mexican Academy Award). Her inspiration comes from poets and philosophers like Camus and Hesse and illustrators like Ryden and Gabriel Pacheco among others.

Karla Castañeda es directora de animación Stop Motion. Su primer cortometraje “Jacinta,” surgió por una imagen que le venía de manera recurrente: unas manos sacándose del pecho su propio corazón marchito. Con “La Noria” obtuvo el Ariel por segunda ocasión. Sus fuentes de inspiración son poetas y filósofos como Camus y Hesse y los ilustradores Ryden, Gabriel Pacheco entre otros.

Rita Basulto is a Mexican animator who was inspired by Svankmajer and Petrov for her art. She was worked in several shorts through her career. Her short, “Lluvia en los ojos” (Rain in the eyes) won several international awards. Currently, she is the Director of Animation and Art in Outik Animation Studio based in Guadalajara.

Rita Basulto es una animadora mexicana que ha encontrado en Svankmajer y Petrov su fuente de inspiración. Su cortometraje “Lluvia en los ojos” recibió diversos premios a nivel internacional.

MĂŠxico is a country full of contrasts.

Through time, its vast and ample territory has been a stage for the settlement of human groups that, even though they share many cultural aspects, they differentiate against each other in radical ways because of the great lengths that split them and the poor contact and exchange between them.

are regions that are so isolated from the rest of the country that have kept their cultural and natural richness.

However, they suffer from developing issues already surpassed by other regions; simultaneously, there are zones that experience an accelerated technological and quality-of- life development that is common to the developed nations, but at the same time, they have the social and environmental issues that all the big cities suffer.

During the 20th Century, the development of the nation occurred towards the center of the country.

Mexico City became a great metropolis that not only represents the largest human settlement in the world, but also the place where most of the industry is located. Moreover, most of the majority of media production in the country happens there. Most of the content and narratives are developed around the City.

Pixelatl is a collective dedicated to build platforms that bring the gaps that split the nation closer together. Not only the physical separation, but also the cultural, educative, and economic distances too, taking advantage of IT and communication that, in addition to connect spaces, they democratize the multimedia creation.

For that, through different platforms and projects, we are beginning to work with indigenous communities and vulnerable populations from many parts of the country, with artists and businessmen of the big cities, with the only objective to generate accessible content to the world that reflects our diversity while stimulating the multimedia industry in MĂŠxico that, despite recent advances, does not consolidate into a powerful sector yet.

Ideatoon is a Mexican contest to search for animated series’ ideas. Its objective is to encourage the creation and development of national cartoon contents that could become potential international hits. el festival

“The Festival” is an animation, videogame, and new media party, that was born to ignite and to promote the creative industries related to entertainment in Mexico. Also, it’s goals are: to broaden the type of productions, to train and to the develop producers and entrepreneurs, along with the professionalization of the sector and the networking with creators around the world. fronteras

Fronteras is a project that teaches stop motion animation to vulnerable groups and native communities in an effort to document their native languages, stories, and mythologies.

Also, it’s an attempt to put technology closer to these communities so that they can start appropriating it and in the future develop animated content and narratives that are relevant to them. It’s Social insertion program that helps to close the technology, education, and cultural gaps that split the country apart.

A través del tiempo, su vasto y diverso territorio ha sido escenario para el asentamiento de grupos humanos que, a pesar de compartir muchos rasgos culturales, terminaron diferenciándose unos de los otros de maneras radicales, tanto por las grandes distancias físicas y climatológicas que los separan, como por el diverso grado de contacto e intercambio que esas mismas distancias provocan.

Pixelatl es una asociación que surge con la finalidad de instrumentar mecanismos que permitan ir cerrando esas grandes brechas que hoy separan a la nación: ya no sólo las distancias físicas, sino también las culturales, educativas y económicas, aprovechando para ello las ventajas de las tecnologías de la información y comunicación, que además de conectar espacios, democratizan la creación multimedia.

Es una fiesta para celebrar la animación, los videojuegos y los nuevos medios, que busca ayudar a detonar y promover las industrias creativas mexicanas relacionadas al entretenimiento, para ampliar la oferta de producciones, la capacitación y el desarrollo de los empresarios, la profesionalización de la industria y la vinculación con creadores de todo el mundo. fronteras

Es un proyecto que busca enseñar animación Stop Motion a los grupos que por su condición socioeconómica, cultural o sicosocial, por su vulnerabilidad ante la violencia, o por alguna condición de discapacidad, se encuentran en las fronteras de nuestra sociedad: presos, niños de la calle, comunidades indígenas, mujeres en situación de violencia o personas con discapacidad. Es un programa de inserción social que ayuda a cerrar brechas tecnológicas, educativas y culturales que existen en nuestra sociedad.
