The Research Problem

 The need for a Best Practices Document during “Exploring Approaches to Managing Landslide Risks” workshop and IRISE Brainstorming session Landslides Best Practices Document to summarize corrective actions to be applied in landslide situations with similar characteristics and to use available funds more effectively University of Pittsburgh | Swanson School of Engineering

Project Objectives

To compile a Best Practices Document for Landslides  To identify class/type of landslides impacting southwestern PA infrastructure To identify corrective actions taken for each landslide class/type To identify challenges in design procedures and permitting processes and improvements needed in current design and permitting procedures and procurement practices.

Project Approach/Deliverables

 Establish fundamental guidelines to characterize type and form of landslide, assess hazards and take corrective action within the framework of “best practices”  Identify proven/long-term or reliable design approach(es) as well as innovative construction methods and materials that will provide a more resilient infrastructure system  Bring forth emerging technology being used in other regions to mitigate landslides  Make distinction about acceptable consequences to tailor solutions to the target audience  Final Best Practices Document and interim quarterly submission of the working material

 Region-specific Best Practices document targeting Geotechnical practitioners and agencies who are familiar with the geologic setting in Southwestern Pennsylvania Best practices compilation will provide value and benefit to other regions or agencies A guiding principle is to strive to do the “right sized” with the “right thing” at the “right time”
