September 1, 2013 through August 31, 2014 Cooperative Education Program/University of Pittsburgh Swanson School of Engineering The co-op program had a strong year. The year ended with a total of 963 active students, including 935 undergraduates and 28 graduate level co-ops, which is almost a 10% increase over last year’s rate of participation. Numbers from the previous year included 847 active undergrads and 31 graduate level co-ops.

New placements for the year rose from 365 new placements in 2012-2013, to 379 students in 2013-2014. Our company participation rose to over 265 employers. The program also demonstrated strong numbers in the diversity of the program participants.

Our post-graduate survey of BS level students entering the workforce reported that 48% of the co-ops received full-time offers from their companies, and 83% of those students accepted. The average starting salary for a co-op who graduated and entered the work force was $63,508. The average GPA of a graduate who participated in co-op was 3.277. The report shows 92% placement of the co-op engineering graduates, based on a 96% response rate. There was 100% placement among the computer science co-op graduates and computer engineering graduates who responded to the survey.

Our Co-op Employer of the Year for 2013 was Eaton Corporation, a long-time supporter of the Swanson School of Engineering and co-op program. Their coop program has become a benchmark for other companies to follow. Students will work at least one term at a manufacturing site in addition to the corporate headquarters. Eaton is a true partner to Pitt’s co-op program as well as a partner to various departments within the Swanson School. We are looking forward to expanding our Eaton relationship and congratulate them for this honor.

Pitt’s Co-op Student of the Year was Haotian Howard Wang, who went on to become the American Society of Engineering Education’s Co-op Student of the Year for 2013. Howard made exceptional contributions to the Swanson School of Engineering as well as his co-op employer, Lubrizol, where he spent four work sessions. Haotian was instrumental in streamlining some of the processes at Lubrizol, which made significant savings for the company.

Our goals for the 2013-2014 year will be to increase our number of student and employer participants while retaining the quality of our program. We particularly look to expand the program in the areas of bioengineering and chemical engineering due to the expansion of student participation from those areas.

Outstanding Co-op Employer of the Year for 2013 Eaton Corporation

We began our program with Eaton in 1990 when Eaton was known as Westinghouse. Westinghouse became Cutler-Hammer, and Cutler-Hammer became Eaton. With the exception of just a few years over a difficult economic period, we maintained our relationship, and it was always a very good one. Over the last several years that relationship went from very good to great. Students who accept a position with Eaton realize that they will rotate among different areas, and for at least one term, they will co-op in a different state. Professional presentations are required from each student at the end of each co-op term. The audience is Eaton management and university representatives. Eaton also hosted a leadership summit for its university partners during 2013, and representatives from Eaton have presented at our co-op employer panel.

Additionally, Eaton hosted a breakout session on enhancing company co-op programs prior to our 2012 co-op fair. Anytime Eaton is asked to help, they step up and are there. Eaton’s commitment to the student does not stop at the end of the rotation, but rather, they encourage the students to return to campus and take on a leadership role. During the 2009-2010 economic recession, Eaton went the extra mile to make certain that our students kept their positions, going all the way to the top to ensure their completion of co-op assignments.

Eaton has also been a generous partner to several endeavors involving the University of Pittsburgh and Swanson School of Engineering, particularly our power engineering program. Recently, Eaton made a gift to the Cooperative Education Program. We intend to use the funds to assist students with relocation costs to their co-op sites.

Through the years, Eaton has hired over 200 co-ops, several of whom are still with Eaton!

Lisa Wise, HR Manager, Leadership Development Programs, accepted the award on behalf of Eaton. Lisa has been instrumental in taking Eaton’s co-op program from ‘very good’ to ‘great.’

Co-op National Student of the Year for 2013 Hoatian “Howard” Wang

Howard was selected not only as the Swanson School of Engineering’s Co-op Student of the Year, but was also named the National 2013 Co-op Student of the Year by the American Society of Engineering Education’s Cooperative Education Division. He was honored at the Conference for Industry and Education Collaboration in February 2014 in Savannah, Georgia. His story follows.

Haotian ‘Howard’ Wang entered the Swanson School of Engineering in the Fall of 2009 with an important distinction: Howard came to the University of Pittsburgh from his homeland of China. He did not know other students, had only a fair command of the English language, and had to accustom himself to a new culture. Howard supplemented his engineering studies with reading, vocabulary, and composition coursework. As a sophomore, Howard was selected as a Peer Advisor for incoming freshmen. All of his mentees remained within the Swanson School of Engineering.

Upon the completion of sophomore year, Howard was afforded a co-op opportunity at Lubrizol, where he spent 4 alternating rotations. The co-op entailed Howard moving to the Cleveland, Ohio area, and he also spent a term in Houston, Texas. During Howard’s second term, he was a focusing team leader working on new specialty chemical development with a cross functional team.

The team successfully produced the material for their customer’s field trial.

During the third term, Howard was a manufacturing co-op and worked solely on a project that resulted in reduced capital expenditures of three million dollars. His fourth term was in supply chain. During that rotation, Howard made a significant impact on scheduling man hour input reductions. The last term was a departure from a typical chemical engineering rotation, but because Howard is minoring in economics, he wanted a rotation that spoke more to the business side.

In addition to 4 outstanding assignments, Howard became involved in volunteer projects through his employer. During one term, he worked as a gardener at the Lubrizol-owned vegetable garden. All produce was taken to a local food bank in Ohio. Howard also volunteered at a local festival that helped to raise funds to build a local library. In Houston, Texas, Howard was a student mentor to a grade school youth with anger and aggression issues; he made a positive impact on the young boy’s life through consistent visits and participation in sports.

As Lubrizol’s first Pitt co-op, Howard paved the way for several other students.

Not only that, but he worked on a product realization initiative between Lubrizol and the Swanson School of Engineering that will strengthen that relationship in years to come. As an undergraduate, Howard was the recipient of three competitive academic scholarships, including a Lubrizol scholarship, and the II-VI Foundation Scholarship. Howard has been a member of Tau Beta Pi National Engineering Honor Society since 2011, and is a member of AICHE. He enjoys basketball and golf, and plays a variety of musical instruments.

Howard graduated summa cum laude in December 2013 with a 3.884 GPA in chemical engineering and minors in chemistry and economics. He currently attends graduate school at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia.

2013-2014 GRADUATING COOPERATIVE EDUCATION STUDENTS EMPLOYMENT SURVEY RESULTS 216/224 students (96%) responded to a post-graduate survey that asked: where did they complete their co-op rotations, if their co-op employer offered them a full-time position and if so, did they accept the position. If students did not accept a position with their co-op employer, the survey asked for information about their current employer, and all students were asked to provide their salary. Finally, students were asked if and where they were attending graduate school.

92% (197/215 students) are employed in engineering and/or attending graduate school. 100% (1/1 A &S) are employed in industry.
