Welcome to the University of Pittsburgh Department of Bioengineering’s Seventh Annual Bioengineering Day, hosted by the Biomedical Engineering Society! Thank you for joining us. Since its inception, BioE Day has served as a showcase for the research taking place within the Pittsburgh bioengineering community. Our goal has been to bring together faculty, alumni, friends, and industry partners from the Greater Pittsburgh Area in a joint celebration of the bioengineering innovation and advancements taking place in our community. The morning events will include workshops designed for students to hone their professional skills. Participants will then join industry experts for a panel discussion and networking luncheon where they will have the opportunity to interact with local company representatives. Following lunch, four graduate students will present their research during the oral spotlight presentations. We will continue with an afternoon poster session where more than 30 undergraduate and graduate students from Pitt, Carnegie Mellon University, and Duquesne University will showcase their research and class projects. The final talk will be a keynote presentation from Rich Tsui, PhD, Associate Professor of Biomedical and Health Informatics at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Prior to joining CHOP, Dr. Tsui served as Associate Professor of Biomedical Informatics, Intelligent Systems Program, and Bioengineering here at the University of Pittsburgh. His research interests include – but are not limited to – real-time clinical decision support, population informatics, mobile healthcare, precision medicine, biosurveillance, machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), and signal processing. KEYNOTE SPEAKER RICH TSUI, PhD 4 -5 p.m. – Lower Lounge Endowed Chair in Biomedical Informatics and Entrepreneurial Science, Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics (DBHi) Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia

Biographical Sketch Dr. Tsui is the holder of the Endowed Chair in Biomedical Informatics and Entrepreneurial Science in the Department of Biomedical and Health Informatics (DBHi) at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). He is also a Senior Fellow at the Institute for Biomedical Informatics at the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests include – but are not limited to – real-time clinical decision support, population informatics, mobile healthcare, precision medicine, biosurveillance, machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), and signal processing. Dr. Tsui has produced over 100 peer-reviewed publications and his publications have been actively cited. He has been working in healthcare analytics and electronic health records (EHRs) for more than 20 years. Prior to joining CHOP, Rich served as Associate Professor of Biomedical Informatics, Intelligent Systems Program, and Bioengineering here at the University of Pittsburgh.
