Join Fiddlesticks and the musicians of the Pittsburgh Symphony for stories and music about favorite traditions and celebrations.

Sing along with melodies passed down from generation to generation and hear Pittsburgh Symphony musicians perform with their families. Discover new and treasured music like Dvořák’s “Songs My Mother Taught Me” and songs from Hansel and Gretel. Your family won’t stop singing after this celebration of music and family!

Join us for concerts and programs designed to spark a love of music.

Join the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for this inclusive concert experience, open to patrons of all ages and abilities and designed for individuals on the autism spectrum, those with sensory sensitivities and others who would like to enjoy a performance in a relaxed environment. We welcome patrons to come with family and friends and respond to the music in their own way, whether by clapping, singing, vocalizing, moving or dancing, at this event!

The experience will feature a 45-minute performance with plenty of special guests and opportunities for audience participation, as well as a lineup of fun, multisensory pre-concert activities. In addition to keeping house lights partially up and providing fidgets, earplugs and a quiet room, the Pittsburgh Symphony will offer pre-visit materials to prepare patrons for the trip to Heinz Hall. ASL interpretation and open captioning will also be available throughout the performance.

The Fiddlesticks Family Concert series includes three Saturday morning concerts designed and recommended for families with children ages three through eight. Each concert features a different theme engaging children in the magical world of music. Assistant Conductor Francesco Lecce-Chong and Fiddlesticks, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s feline musical ambassador to children, guide you through these musical explorations. And, at every concert, vocalist Katy Williams leads the audience in Fiddlesticks’ favorite song: “Music Can Make Your Life Complete!”

Performances begin at 11:15 a.m. and are approx. 45 minutes in length. Come at 10:00 a.m. for Discovery Time Adventures, where children explore music through hands-on activities.

This exciting program gives music students in grades nine through twelve the experience of playing “side-by-side” their Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra counterparts. Additional program highlights include sectionals and workshops with Pittsburgh Symphony musicians and rehearsals with Assistant Conductor Andrés Franco. Over the course of the school year, this award-winning program invites local high school students to plan and implement a Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra concert. Students will attend Pittsburgh Symphony rehearsals, select program repertoire, promote the concert, sell tickets, work concert production and create multimedia for promotion and documentation. Students will also explore STEAM concepts through hands-on technologies and maker activities focused on music. Students are coached by symphony staff members and local technology educators, and proceeds from the concert benefit the music programs of the participating schools. KRAFT HEINZ AUDIENCE OF THE FUTURE COMPOSITION REVIEW

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra is seeking scores for its Kraft Heinz Audience of the Future Composition Review. High school participants in the Kraft Heinz Audience of the Future Program will listen to and select a winning piece to be performed on the program’s culminating concert; however, more than one work may be selected. The overall winner will receive $250 and have his or her piece performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra during the Kraft Heinz Audience of the Future concert on May 16, 2017. Submissions are due by Monday, October 31, 2016. Please contact the Education and Community Engagement Department at education_outreach@pittsburghsymphony.org for complete guidelines.

PSO REHEARSAL EXPERIENCE

For only $10 per person, you can have a rarely-seen look at what happens during an orchestra rehearsal. Attendees will arrive at Heinz Hall 30 minutes prior to the beginning of the PSO rehearsal. and hear a presentation on concert etiquette before enjoying up to two and a half hours of behind-the-scenes rehearsal with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. While there is no minimum size for a group wishing to attend, the program will accept no more than 250 attendees. A complimentary ticket is available with every 25 tickets purchased. Soloists, conductors and repertoire are subject to change. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that conductor comments will not be amplified or captioned.

AMBASSADOR PROGRAM

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Ambassador Program is available to schools throughout the region. Pittsburgh Symphony musicians visit multiple schools throughout the academic year to provide students of all ability levels with performance experience and musical instruction. These musician ambassadors serve as an additional professional resource for music educators by addressing needs and questions in their classrooms.

To request an Ambassador visit to your school, please complete and submit the request form on our website at pittsburghsymphony.org/ambassador. We will do our best to accommodate your request but cannot guarantee musician availability. UNLOCKING THE CLASSICS

Unlocking the Classics gives an insider’s view into the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and its upcoming concerts. Host Jim Cunningham, Artistic Director of WQED-FM, explores the background and musical structure of masterpieces performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony. A Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra musician or staff member joins Jim at each session to give an informal presentation to the group and sometimes perform musical excerpts. EQT ORCHESTRA TRAINING PROGRAM FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN MUSICIANS

The EQT OTPAAM program is a pre-professional, two-year program designed to mentor one young African American musician in pursuit of an orchestral career. The selected musician spends two seasons immersed in the rehearsal and performance environment of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, along with studying with members of the orchestra to train and prepare for professional auditions and performance opportunities.

AMERICANA CONCERT

IN HONOR OF SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN

Join us for concerts and programs designed to celebrate the power, joy, healing, and emotional support of music and community.

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will be performing a free concert celebrating our country and those who serve and protect it. Enjoy a concert of American favorites, including the Stars and Stripes Forever. This PSO concert is free to the public, and more information will be available on the Pittsburgh Symphony website in the spring.

In Honor of Service Program

This new program will strive to create additional access and engagements with military service personnel through single ticket discounts for BNY Mellon Grand Classics and PNC Pops Concerts at Heinz Hall, presentations by Pittsburgh Symphony musicians in the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, and an annual concert in the community in honor of our active and retired military personnel.

Through the Music and Wellness Program, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra works with music therapists and other healthcare professionals to bring therapeutic, live music to individuals at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, the Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System and other facilities in the Pittsburgh area as well as abroad. Pittsburgh Symphony musicians lead music and wellness sessions for small yet diverse groups of participants that include patients, their families and healthcare staff. By interacting with participants and performing relevant and meaningful music, Pittsburgh Symphony musicians help participants meet their physical, emotional and social needs.

For the past thirteen years, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has collaborated with a community-based planning committee to create a wonderful program in Wilkinsburg. The program includes an annual Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra concert at Wilkinsburg High School with all proceeds from the concert going directly to the music programs. More information about ticketing and this year’s concert will be available on the Pittsburgh Symphony website in the fall.
