Education and Community Engagement Mission It is the mission of the Education and Community Engagement Department to engage individuals in experiences of the highest artistic and educational quality to create informed, enduring, and evolving connections to music and to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Music Education Advocacy Supporting music education in the public school core curriculum is a priority of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Ensuring that music specialists are teaching students in grades K-12 is critical toward developing a cultured citizenry.

MUSIC AND WELLNESS Through the Music and Wellness Program, the PSO works with music therapists and other healthcare professionals to bring therapeutic, live music to individuals at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, the Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System, and other facilities in the Pittsburgh area and abroad. PSO musicians lead music and wellness sessions for small yet diverse groups of participants that include patients, their families, and healthcare staff. By interacting with participants and performing relevant and meaningful music, PSO musicians help participants meet their physical, emotional, and social needs.

Free classroom supplementary materials are mailed to anyone making a reservation for a Schooltime or PNC Tiny Tots concert; they are also available for download on the PSO website. These materials are designed to support the PA Academic Achievement Standards and the Common Core Standards.

H.J. Heinz Company

Audience of the Future April 22, 2014 at 7:00 pm Over the course of the school year, this award-winning program invites local high school students to plan and implement a Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra concert. Students will attend PSO rehearsals, select program repertoire, promote the concert, sell tickets, work concert production, and create multimedia for promotion and documentation. Students are coached by PSO staff members, and proceeds for the concert benefit the music programs of the participating schools. If your school is interested in participating, please contact the Education and Community Engagement Department at education_outreach@ pittsburghsymphony.org.

Student Rehearsal Experience An educational opportunity for school groups from grades seven through twelve!

For only $10 a person, you can get a rarely-seen look at what happens during a world-class orchestra rehearsal. Students will arrive at Heinz Hall by 9:30 am and be treated to a special presentation on concert etiquette before enjoying up to two and a half hours of behind-the-scenes rehearsal with the PSO. While there is no minimum for any group wishing to attend, the program will accept no more than 250 attendees. A free chaperone ticket is available for every 25 student tickets purchased. Soloists, conductors, and repertoire are subject to change. Seating is on a first come, first served basis.

H.J. Heinz Company Audience of the Future

Composition contest The PSO is seeking scores for its H.J. Heinz Company Audience of the Future Composition Contest. High school participants in the H.J. Heinz Company Audience of the Future Program will listen to and select a winning piece to be performed on the program’s culminating concert; however, more than one work may be selected. The overall winner will receive $250 and have his or her piece performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra during the Audience of the Future concert on April 22, 2014. Submissions are due by November 29, 2013. Please contact the Education and Community Engagement Department for complete contest guidelines.

Additional program highlights include sectionals and workshops with PSO musicians and rehearsals with PSO Assistant Conductor Fawzi Haimor. Ambassador Program The PSO Ambassador Program is free and available to schools throughout the region. PSO musicians make multiple school visits throughout the academic year to provide students of all abilities with performance experience and musical instruction. These musician Ambassadors serve as additional professional resources for music educators by addressing needs and questions to assist music programs.

To request an Ambassador visit to your school, please complete and submit the request form on our website: pittsburghsymphony.org/ ambassador. We will do our best to accommodate your request but cannot guarantee musician availability. Unlocking the Classics Unlocking the Classics gives an insider’s view into the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and its upcoming concerts. Host Jim Cunningham, Artistic Director of WQED FM, explores the background and musical structure of masterpieces performed by the PSO. A Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra musician or staff member joins Jim at each session to give an informal presentation and sometimes perform musical excerpts. Thank You! Allegheny Valley School The PSO is proud to partner with the Allegheny Valley School, which provides residential and therapeutic programs throughout Pennsylvania for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The PSO performs two concerts each season for the residents at the Pittsburgh Campus.

May 16, 2014 at 7:00 pm Wilkinsburg High School Auditorium The PSO collaborates with local residents and organizations to perform an annual concert at Wilkinsburg High School, and all proceeds from the concert go to the music programs in the Wilkinsburg School District. More information about ticketing and this year’s concert will be available on the PSO website in the spring.

EQT Orchestra Training Program for African American Musicians The EQT OTPAAM program is a pre-professional, two year program designed to mentor one young African American musician in pursuit of an orchestral career. The selected musician spends two seasons immersed in the working environment of the PSO and studies with members of the orchestra to train and prepare for professional auditions and performance opportunities. The winner of the 2013-2015 fellowship is Adedeji Ogunfolu, a horn player.
