Education and Community Engagement Mission It is the mission of the Education and Community Engagement Department to engage individuals in experiences of the highest artistic and educational quality to create informed, enduring, and evolving connections to music and to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.

Music Education Advoacy Supporting music education in the public school core curriculum is a priority of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. Ensuring that music specialists are teaching students in grades K-12 is critical toward developing a cultured citizenry.

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra remains committed to providing music education and community service to the greater western Pennsylvania region. Next season, Education and Community concerts will include: Fiddlesticks Family Concert Series, four PNC Tiny Tots concerts, Schooltime concerts for students in grades two and four, EQT Student Side-By-Side, H.J. Heinz Company Audience of the Future, and Community Engagement concerts in Wilkinsburg and at the Allegheny Valley School. Service Exchange musician projects will include: Music and Wellness services at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, VA Pittsburgh Health Care System, and other venues; Unlocking the Classics lecture series; in-school musician Ambassador visits; coachings and masterclasses; the Orchestra Training Program for African American Musicians; and chamber performances throughout the region.

Due to challenging financial circumstances, the PSO leadership has made the difficult decision to suspend six community and education programs next season. While working toward financial security, the PSO will continue to seek ways to effectively serve the region and individual communities. To this end, the PSO will conduct a Community Needs Assessment. This initiative will include public sessions and surveys to collect data toward determining sustainable and meaningful programming and community service.

We appreciate the community’s understanding and support as we work through these difficult financial circumstances, and we look forward to collaborating with the community toward developing increasingly relevant programming.

H.J. Heinz Company

Audience of the Future | April 30, 2013 | 7:00 PM

Student Rehearsal Experience An educational opportunity for school groups from grades six through twelve!

Over the course of the school year, this award-winning program invites local high school students to plan and implement a Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra concert.

Students will attend PSO rehearsals, select program repertoire, promote the concert, sell tickets, work concert production, and create multimedia for promotion and documentation. Students are coached by PSO staff members, and proceeds for the concert benefit the music programs of the participating schools. If your school is interested in participating, please ermail the Education and Community Engagement department at education_outreach@pittsburghsymphony.org.

For only $10 a person, you can get a rarely-seen look at what happens during a worldclass orchestra rehearsal. Students will arrive at Heinz Hall by 9:30 am and be treated to a special presentation on concert etiquette before enjoying up to two and a half hours of behind-the-scenes rehearsal with the PSO. The program requires a minimum of 25 people and will accept no more than 250. A free chaperone ticket is available for every 25 student tickets purchased. Soloists, conductors and repertoire are subject to change. Seating is on a first come, first served basis.

Ambassador Program The PSO Musician Ambassador Program is available to schools throughout the region.

PSO musicians make multiple school visits throughout the academic year to provide students of all abilities with performance experience and musical instruction. These musician Ambassadors serve as additional professional resources for music educators, and they address needs and questions to assist music programs.

To request an Ambassador visit to your school, please complete and submit the request form on our website, pittsburghsymphony.org/ambassador. We will do our best to accommodate your request but cannot guarantee musician availability.

H.J. Heinz Company

Audience of the Future Composition Contest The PSO is seeking scores for its H. J. Heinz Company Audience of the Future Composition Contest. High school participants in the H.J. Heinz Company Audience of the Future program will listen to and select a winning piece to be performed on the program’s culminating concert; however, more than one work may be selected. The overall winner will receive $250 and have his or her piece performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra during the H.J. Heinz Company Audience of the Future concert on April 30, 2013.

Submissions are due by November 30, 2012. Please contact the Education and Community Engagement Department for complete contest guidelines.

EQT Student Side-By-Side | April 30, 2013 | 7:00 PM This exciting program gives music students in grades nine through twelve the experience of playing “side-by-side” their Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra counterparts.

Additional program highlights include sectionals and workshops with PSO musicians and rehearsals with PSO Assistant Conductor Fawzi Haimor. Application forms and additional program information will be available on the PSO website in the fall. title SPONSORS

Unlocking the Classics Unlocking the Classics gives an insider’s view into the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and its upcoming concerts. Host Jim Cunningham, Artistic Director of WQED FM, explores the background and musical structure of masterpieces performed by the PSO. A Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra musician or staff member joins Jim at each session, giving an informal presentation to the group, and, at times, performing musical excerpts. Music and Wellness Program

The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra’s Music and Wellness Program partners with music therapy experts and professionals in hospitals to be a music and wellness resource for patients, families, and healthcare staff in Pennsylvania. The program empowers individuals to utilize music to meet their physical and emotional needs.

Education and Community Engagement programming at the PSO represents a $2 million annual investment in our future. Support from the following helps to bridge the funding gap for these important programs, enabling the PSO to touch the lives of more than 65,000 children, students, and life-long learners throughout our region.

Educators’ Discount Card

Orchestra Training Program for African American Musicians The OTPAAM program is a pre-professional, two year program designed to mentor one young African American musician in pursuit of an orchestral career. The selected musician spends two seasons immersed in the working environment of the PSO, studying with members of the orchestra to train and prepare for professional auditions and performance opportunities. Auditions for the 2013-2015 fellowship will be held in early 2013. For more information, please visit the PSO website.
