GAME NOTES THE SERIES The Penguins open the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs by hosting the first two games of the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the first ever playoff series between the teams. After playing the opening two games here Wednesday and Friday, the No. 4 seed Penguins and fifth-seeded Lightning will travel to Tampa Bay for Games Three and Four on Monday and Wednesday. Game Five, if necessary, will be played here on Saturday, April 23. . . The Penguins are in the playoffs for the fifth consecutive season and 26th time overall; the Lightning are in the playoffs for the first time since the 2006-07 season and sixth time overall. . . The Penguins were eliminated in seven games in the conference semifinals by Montreal last season after an opening round victory over Ottawa. . . The Lightning have not won a playoff series since beating Calgary in Game Seven of the Cup Final in 2004, losing in the first round to Ottawa in 2006 and New Jersey in 2007. . . RON BURKLE Ron Burkle has now added a new arena — Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center — to his tremendous list of accomplishments in the business world. Burkle, widely recognized as one of the preeminent investors in retail, manufacturing and distribution industries, is in his 12th season as co-owner of the Penguins. He teamed with Mario Lemieux to buy the team out of bankruptcy in September, 1999, and together they have developed one of the outstanding ownership groups in all of professional sports. Among Burkle’s many significant contributions to the Penguins was his role in negotiations for the new arena deal. Under the leadership of Lemieux and Burkle, the Penguins have sold out every game for three-plus seasons and established new standards for television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits while winning acclaim as the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations. A consistent post-season threat on the ice, the Penguins reached back-to-back Stanley Cup Finals in 2008 and 2009 and won the Cup in 2009. Young stars such as Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal and others have been signed to long-term contracts, ensuring that the team’s core will remain intact. Burkle founded the Yucaipa Companies in 1986 and has served as Chairman of the Board and controlling shareholder of numerous companies, including Alliance Entertainment, Golden State Foods, Dominick’s, Fred Meyer, Ralphs and Food4Less. Ron is co-chairman of the Burkle Center for International Relations at UCLA and is broadly involved in the community. He is a trustee of the Carter Center, the National Urban League and the Frank Lloyd Wright Conservancy. He has received numerous awards, including the AFL-CIO’s Murray Green Meany Kirkland Community Service Award, the Los Angeles County Federation Man of the Year and the Los Angeles County Boy Scouts Jimmy Stewart Person of the Year award.

MARIO LEMIEUX Mario Lemieux always will be remembered for the magic he created on the ice, but one of the crowning achievements of his remarkable career came this season in his role as a businessman — the opening of CONSOL Energy Center, home of the Penguins and Pittsburgh’s new multi-purpose entertainment venue. The new arena puts the exclamation point on Lemieux’s lengthy quest to ensure the Penguins’ long-term future in Pittsburgh and provides his adopted hometown with a spectacular state-of-the-art center for professional and collegiate sports, concerts, family shows and other events. “There were so many people who contributed to this project, including local and state political leaders, local business leaders, NHL officials and, of course, our fans,” said Penguins CEO David Morehouse, “but I think it’s safe to say that none of this happens without Mario Lemieux.” Even before the reality of CONSOL Energy Center, Lemieux and co-owner Ron Burkle had turned the Penguins into a premier NHL franchise, winning praise for off-ice business accomplishments in addition to creating a positive, player-friendly atmosphere on the hockey side. The Penguins have sold out a team-record 200-plus straight games, sold out every suite for four straight seasons and established records for local television ratings, merchandise sales and website hits. Over the summer, the Penguins were named the No. 1 team in professional sports in Fan Relations by ESPN The Magazine. Oh, and they won the Stanley Cup in 2009 — the third Cup of Lemieux’s career but his first as an owner. Lemieux was one of the greatest players in NHL history from 1984-97 and 2000-06, winning six league scoring titles, three MVPs trophies and two Conn Smythe Trophies as playoff MVP, in addition to the two Cups. An immaculately gifted 6-foot-4 centerman, he dominated play for parts of three decades despite a series of medical setbacks, including multiple back surgeries and a battle with Hodgkin’s disease. He retired in 2006 as the No. 7 all-time scorer in NHL history with 1,723 points. He also ranked eighth all-time in goals (690) and 10th in assists (1,033). In addition to his legendary hockey accomplishments, he continues to oversee the Mario Lemieux Foundation for cancer research and neo-natal research and hosts its celebrity golf tournament, which has raised more than $8 million for charity. DAVID MOREHOUSE Pittsburgh native David Morehouse was named CEO of the Penguins in September and leads the team into an exciting new era at CONSOL Energy Center. Morehouse had served as team president since 2007, overseeing ticket sales, marketing, corporate sales, communications and brand development, as well as representing the team in corporate relations and governmental affairs. Under his leadership the Penguins have become one of the top organizations in professional sports — ranked No. 1 in Fan Relations and No. 5 overall as a franchise among 122 pro teams in North America by ESPN The Magazine. As team president, Morehouse implemented a brand strategy that featured a new commitment to marketing, fan interaction and community outreach, as well as a targeted focus on the team’s young fan demographic. Under his leadership, the Penguins have sold out every game for four straight seasons — the sellout streak is at 206 games following the 2010-11 regular season— while leading all U.S.-based NHL teams in local TV ratings last season and setting new standards for website traffic and social media. Morehouse joined the Penguins in December, 2004 as Senior Consultant on the new arena project, following a career in national politics that included stints at the White House, Pentagon and on Capitol Hill, as well as key roles in two Presidential campaigns. He was Senior Advisor for the John Kerry for President campaign in 2004, traveling on the campaign plane and serving as Senator Kerry’s traveling chief of staff. He worked in the Clinton-Gore White House in the 1990s, and was Senior Counselor and Trip Director for Vice President Al Gore from 1999-2001. Morehouse grew up in the Beechview section on Pittsburgh. He attended the Community College of Allegheny County and Duquesne University, and received a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government. He and his wife, Vanessa, have three children and live in Bell Acres.

RAY SHERO Ray Shero, 48, is at the vanguard of the NHL’s new breed of general managers — steeped in family hockey tradition but on the cutting-edge of new technology and modernization in hockey operations, player relations and team management. His fresh ideas and calm but firm management style helped transform the Penguins from a team that did not qualify for the playoffs in 2005-06 to one that reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2007-08 and won the Cup in 2008-09. During that time, he has moved boldly to ensure a strong future for the Penguins, signing six key members of the team’s core — Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal, Brooks Orpik and Kris Letang — to long-term contracts. Shero built on the team’s already strong foundation by adding key pieces in the 2010 offseason to set the Penguins up for long-term success. With shrewd maneuvering and an aggressive approach during the first day of free agency, he solidified the team’s blue line with the long-term signings of top-rated defensemen Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek. Shero was named GM on May 25, 2006 and one of his first acts was to declare a goal of building a team that could compete for championships on a yearly basis. He revamped the team’s hockey operations staff and structure, upgraded professional and amateur scouting, added a team operations director and opened new lines of communication with the business side of the organization. In his first season, 2006-07, Shero led his team to its first playoff berth since 2001 and a 47-point improvement in the standings — the fourth-largest improvement from one season to the next in NHL history. Building on that success, the Penguins topped 100 points for the second straight season in 2007-08, winning their first division title since 1998 and advancing to the Stanley Cup Final, where they fell to Detroit. After a rocky start in 2008-09, the Penguins rallied when Bylsma was named head coach in February, finishing 18-3-4 to earn a playoff berth and then defeating Philadelphia, Washington, Carolina and Detroit en route to the Stanley Cup. Along the way, they twice overcame 2-0 deficits in games (against Washington and Detroit), won all four seriesclinching games on the road and won two Game Sevens on the road — including the 2-1 thriller at Detroit for the Cup. Ray’s father, Fred, had won two Stanley Cups as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers in 1974 and 1975. The Shero’s are one of the few father-son tandems to appear on the Cup. The late Fred Shero also was a coach and general manager with the New York Rangers. Ray built his hockey sense and managerial style during 14 seasons as an NHL assistant general manager — six with the Ottawa Senators and eight with the Nashville Predators. Shero played college hockey at St. Lawrence University, twice serving as team captain, and was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in 1982. He spent seven years as a player agent before making the transition to the front office. The native of St. Paul, Minn. is actively involved with USA Hockey and is a member of the USA Hockey National Team Advisory Group. Ray and his wife, Karen, and their two sons reside in Upper St. Clair.

JASON BOTTERILL Jason Botterill enters his second full season as assistant general manager after being promoted to his current position on May 22, 2009 by general manager Ray Shero. As assistant GM, Botterill works closely with Shero on all hockeyrelated matters, including scouting, player development and contract negotiations. He also manages hockey operations and acts as GM for the clubâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s top-minor league affiliate, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League. Prior to his promotion, Botterill, 34, worked two seasons as director of hockey administration with the Penguins; his responsibilities included salary cap management, professional and amateur scouting and overseeing prospects development. Botterillâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s avant-garde approach and understanding of the salary cap has been a major asset for the Penguins. Before joining Pittsburgh, Botterill worked with NHL Central Registry and also scouted for the Dallas Stars. Botterill was a first-round draft pick (20th overall) by Dallas in 1994 and played 88 NHL games over six seasons with Dallas, Atlanta, Calgary and Buffalo. He also played 393 career games in the AHL and IHL, recording 127 goals and 257 points. A native of Edmonton who grew up in Winnipeg, Botterill played four seasons at the University of Michigan, where he earned his MBA, and helped lead the Wolverines to the NCAA title in 1996. He also played for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships in 1994, 1995 and 1996, helping his team win gold medals in all three tournaments. He resides in Pittsburgh along with his wife, Andrea.

In just one-plus seasons behind the bench, Dan Bylsma has already become one of the most successful coaches in Penguins’ history. After being promoted to Penguins head coach in February 2009, Bylsma, 40, directed the team to its third Stanley Cup in franchise history — a feat previously accomplished by legendary coaches “Badger” Bob Johnson and Scott Bowman. In the process Bylsma became the 14th rookie head coach, and just the fourth in the past 50 years, to capture the Stanley Cup. Of those 14, only Montreal’s Al MacNeil (1970-71) took over mid-season. Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.659) in team history, and is tied with Bowman for most postseason victories (23) and series victories (5). He also became the eighth-fastest head coach in NHL history to hit the 50-win mark (78 games). All-time under Bylsma, the Penguins boast a 65-31-11 regular-season record; 35-13-5 home record; 31-17-6 road mark; 40-3-3 when leading after two periods; 42-1-1 when scoring four or more goals; and 43-9-6 when scoring first. In 2009-10 the Grand Haven, Mich. native completed his first full NHL season behind the bench for Pittsburgh, leading the club to a 47-28-7 record for 101 points — breaking 100 points for the sixth time in franchise history and for the third time in the last four years — finishing only two points behind New Jersey for the Atlantic Division title. Bylsma played nine NHL seasons as a right winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim from 1995-2004. He played 429 NHL regular-season games, recording 19 goals and 62 points, and also played in the 2003 Stanley Cup Final with Anaheim. He began his coaching career as an assistant with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the AHL in 2004-05 and made his NHL coaching debut as an assistant with the New York Islanders in 2005-06. Bylsma was an assistant coach at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton for two seasons from 2006-08 and was named head coach at the start of the 2008-09 season. He went 35-16-1-2 in 54 games with WB/S before being promoted to Pittsburgh. He played four seasons of college hockey at Bowling Green. Dan and his wife, Mary Beth, have one son and reside in the North Hills.

TONY GRANATO Tony Granato, 46, begins his second season on the Penguins’ coaching staff. Granato, among his many responsibilities, works with the Penguins’ forwards and penalty killing units. He oversaw the NHL’s ninth-ranked penalty killing group with an 84.1-percent success rate, and second best on the road at 85.3 percent. Prior to joining the Penguins, Granato spent six seasons behind the bench for the Colorado Avalanche and served two stints as Avalanche head coach from 2002-04 and 2008-09. Granato compiled a 215-104-17-16 record and led Colorado to a Northwest Division title in 2003. Granato played 13 seasons in the NHL with the NY Rangers, Los Angeles and San Jose. In 1997, he was the recipient of the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy for overcoming a near career-ending brain injury. In 773 career games, the feisty forward posted 248 goals, 492 points and 1,425 penalty minutes. He appeared in 79 career postseason games and helped lead Los Angeles to a Stanley Cup Final berth in 1993. Granato played four years at the University of Wisconsin and was inducted into the Badgers’ Hall of Fame in 2000. Granato also played for the U.S. National team in 1987-88 and represented his country in the 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary. Tony and his wife, Linda, are the parents of four children and reside in the South Hills.

TODD REIRDEN Todd Reirden, 39, joined Pittsburgh’s coaching staff on July 31, 2010 after coaching with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the previous two seasons. Reirden, an NHL defenseman for parts of five seasons, works closely with the team’s defensemen. Reirden, completed his first full season as WB/S head coach in 2009-10, leading a young and inexperienced team to an impressive 41-34-2-3 record, finishing third in the East Division, and a berth in the Calder Cup playoffs. Prior to joining the Penguins organization, Reirden spent one season as an assistant coach with the Bowling Green Falcons (CCHA) — his alma mater. He was a teammate of Bylsma’s during the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons at Bowling Green. Selected by New Jersey in the 12th round (242nd overall) of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Reirden played professionally for 13 seasons, retiring after the 2006-07 campaign with Graz EC of the Austrian Hockey League. He appeared in 183 NHL games with Edmonton, St. Louis, Atlanta and Phoenix, recording 46 points (11+35) and 181 penalty minutes. Todd and his wife, Shelby, have one son.

GILLES MELOCHE Former NHL goaltender Gilles Meloche is in his fifth season as the Penguins’ full-time goaltending coach and 25th with the organization. Meloche has been instrumental in developing Marc-Andre Fleury into a Stanley Cup-winning netminder. Meloche served as a Penguins scout from 1989-2006 and also doubled as a goaltending coach/consultant during much of that time. He was also part of the staff when the Penguins won Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. A native of Montreal, Quebec, Meloche spent 18 seasons as an NHL goaltender with Chicago, California, Cleveland, Minnesota and Pittsburgh. He played the final three seasons of his career in Pittsburgh following a 1985 trade. Meloche appeared in 788 NHL games during his career, posting a record of 270-351-131 with a 3.64 goals-against average. In 45 career playoff games, he posted a 21-19 record and a 3.48 goals-against average. Gilles and his wife, Sophie, reside in Pittsburgh. AROUND THE NHL REGULAR SEASON ACCOLADES On April 10, the 2010-11 NHL regular season came to a close . The Vancouver Canucks finished atop the standings, boasting an impressive 54-19-9 record to win the President’s Trophy for earning the most points (117) throughout the season . In addition to finishing in first place, the Canucks already have three award winners on their team . Daniel Sedin finished with 104 points (41G-63A) to win his first Art Ross Trophy as the NHL’s highest-scoring player . His twin brother and teammate Henrik won the award last season on his way to winning the Hart Trophy for NHL MVP . Vancouver goaltenders Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider won the Williams Jennings Trophy as the goalies on the team that allowed the fewest goals (185) during the season . Anaheim’s Corey Perry won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy for finishing with 50 goals, more than any other player . The nominees for the rest of the awards will be revealed in the coming weeks, and the winners will be announced at the NHL Awards ceremony in Las Vegas on June 22 .

WILD FINISH On the final weekend of the season, both the New York Rangers and the defending champion Chicago Blackhawks breathed a collective sigh of relief when they snagged the eighth and final spot in their respective conference’s playoff seeding . The Rangers struggled down the stretch, dropping three of their last six contests . It all came down to Carolina’s April 9 game against Tampa Bay . The Hurricanes would have stolen the eighth seed with a win, but the Lightning ended their rival’s postseason hopes and gave the Rangers a playoff berth after New York missed out on the postseason last year . In the West, Chicago fell to Detroit on the last day of the season, opening the door for Dallas to snag the No . 8 spot . But Dallas couldn’t get it done later that night in Minnesota, as the Wild bested the Stars 5-3 to send the reigning champion Blackhawks back to the playoffs .

PLAYOFF MATCHUPS SET In the Eastern Conference, top-seeded Washington will face the New York Rangers . The Capitals defeated the Rangers in a seven-game series in 2009 before falling to Pittsburgh in the conference semifinals . No . 2 seed Philadelphia will face No . 7 Buffalo, while No . 3 Boston will square off against bitter rival Montreal . This is the third time in the past four years that the Bruins and Canadiens clashed in the opening round of the playoffs, with both squads winning one series each . The Penguins will face No . 5 seed Tampa Bay to round out the East . Out west, Vancouver will face Chicago in the first round . The Blackhawks defeated the Canucks in the western conference semifinals in both 2009 and ‘10 . No . 2 San Jose will play division rival Los Angeles in a battle of California . This is also the first time in NHL history that three California teams have made the playoffs . Detroit is paired up with Phoenix, which is a rematch of the exciting seven-game series last season, which the Red Wings won . No . 4 Anaheim faces No . 5 Nashville as the Ducks are trying to win their second Stanley Cup, while the Predators are hoping to make it past the first round for the first time in franchise history .

MIKE LANGE One of the most unique broadcasters in professional sports, Mike Lange enters his 35th season with the Penguins and will handle radio play-by-play on the club’s flagship station, 105.9 FM The X. Known for his creative and colorful style, including trademark phrases such as “Buy Sam A Drink And Get His Dog One, Too,” Lange was awarded the Foster Hewitt award by the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2001. Lange’s relationship with the Penguins began in 1974-75, when he broke into the NHL as a radio play-by-play man. He left for one season, but returned in 1976-77 and has been a fixture on the Penguins’ scene ever since. Lange did radio exclusively until 1979, when games were simulcast on radio and TV. He served as the television voice of the Penguins through 2005-06, before returning to the radio booth in 2006-07. A native of Sacramento, California, Lange earned a degree in broadcasting from Sacramento State University before starting his career as the voice of the Phoenix Roadrunners (WHL) in 1970. He also served as the play-by-play voice of the San Diego Gulls (WHL) in 1973-74 before joining the Penguins. In addition to his tenure with the Penguins, Lange handled play-by-play duties for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1986-87. A well-known member of the Pittsburgh community, Lange makes numerous personal appearances throughout the year and is actively involved in charity work.

PHIL BOURQUE Two-time Stanley Cup champion Phil Bourque begins his seventh season on the Penguins broadcast team, serving as color commentator alongside Mike Lange. A gritty winger/defenseman, Bourque was signed by Pittsburgh as a free agent in 1982, and went on to record 164 points (75+89) in 344 regular-season games with the Penguins between 1983 and 1992. For his career he totaled 199 points (88+111) in 477 games with the Penguins, New York Rangers and Ottawa. Since retiring from professional hockey in 2000, Bourque has co-hosted Penguins pre- and post-game shows on the Penguins Radio Network and worked as a contributor for FSN Pittsburgh’s coverage of Penguins hockey.

BOB GROVE After a 17-year career as the Penguins beat writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, Bob Grove joined the team’s radio broadcasts in 1998 as a frequent studio host/co-host and is now in his sixth season as fulltime host of the pre- and post-game broadcasts and intermissions on the Penguins Hockey Network. Grove wrote Pittsburgh Penguins: The Official History of the First 30 Years in 1997 and has contributed game notes to GOAL Magazine inserts or Icetime programs for every Pittsburgh home game since 1986. He was also a contributor to the second edition of Total Hockey and to The Game I’ll Never Forget. He is a senior writer covering hockey for the Pittsburgh Sports Report and also hosts “Heineken Hockey Hour” and “Bob Grove’s Hot Stove” on Penguins Radio at 105.9-HD 2. 48

CONCUSSION TESTING PROGRAM The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation has paired with UPMC Sports Medicine to introduce the foundation’s first major initiative, the “Heads Up Pittsburgh” program. The Penguins Foundation will offer free baseline concussion testing and educational programs to youth

hockey players in the Pittsburgh region. “This is the first major initiative of the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation,” said Dave Soltesz, president of the Foundation. “Our mission statement says it all — to actively promote physical well being, encourage teamwork, stress the value of education and provide essential life skills to young people of the community through youth hockey and other activities.” The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) also are playing key roles in this unique program to enhance the safety of local youth hockey through concussion education and awareness among players and their families. Free testing will be available to youth players in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League (PIHL) and Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL), as well as others registered locally through USA Hockey programs. All NHL players undergo such a test. The baseline test is then used for a comparison if a player suffers a concussion and to help inform return to play decisions made by health care professionals. Penguins head coach Dan Bylsma is fully supportive of this initiative, both as an NHL coach and a parent of a youth hockey player. “This is an attempt to aid a large number of kids throughout the Pittsburgh area to be able to take that step to get the baseline and to be tested,” Bylsma said. “So that when my son and your son and everyone’s kids happen to have this happen to them, we have a baseline so we know how to deal with this and we’re more aware of the situation.” The program plans to focus on pee wee, bantam and midget levels of youth hockey as well as high school hockey, as these players are all involved in body checking. The program will be used by over 6,000 youth hockey players in Western Pennsylvania The tests, which are being funded by the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, will be conducted starting May 1 at the UPMC Sports Medicine Center on the South Side.

PERSEVERANCE THROUGH INJURY They began their regular season without Jordan Staal and finished it without Sidney Crosby. In between they lost Evgeni Malkin until next training camp and Brooks Orpik for 13 games, two more injuries in a series of setbacks and suspensions that on at least one occasion necessitated the recall of players from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton by the van load. And yet the Penguins overcame it all well enough to accumulate 106 points, the secondmost amassed in franchise history, while earning the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference. Even those without much NHL experience to fall back upon for comparison can understand that what the Penguins went through this season was as atypical as it was unforeseen back in October. “I’m sure this will be a season everyone in their career will talk about, remember that year in 2010-11 when guys went down left and right,” forward Eric

Eric Tangradi was one of many that were plagued by injury this season.

Tangradi said. “This is definitely out of the ordinary. “To be able to persevere through all of this has been something special.” Tangradi started the season in Pittsburgh, was sent to the minors, was recalled as an injury replacement and eventually was replaced in the lineup when he succumbed to injury. He joined defensemen Matt Niskanen, Zbynek Michalek, Paul Martin and Orpik, and forwards Mark Letestu, Staal, Chris Kunitz, Dustin Jeffrey, Mike Comrie, Eric

Crosby hasn’t played since Jan 5. Malkin hasn’t played since Feb. 6 and won’t again until next season. And forward Matt Cooke has missed 14 games due to suspension and will miss the first round of the postseason for the same reason. Through it all these Penguins have never blinked. “It was never a worry,” forward Max Talbot maintained. “It was more of a challenge.” Talbot can recall at least one mid-February game when the Penguins’ circumstances were perceived as especially challenging. That was a Feb. 16 visit to Colorado that featured forwards Ryan Craig, Johnson, Brett Sterling, Joe Vitale and Tim Wallace all in the lineup at the same time. “It was like, ‘Oh my God, we have a lot of guys called up right now,’” Talbot said. “But at the same time we kept playing well and won that game.” Their ability to win as many games as they did with

whatever lineup configuration was available could pay dividends now that the playoffs have arrived, particularly given the attrition that often takes place in the postseason. “Mentally we know we can win some games with anyone in the lineup,” Talbot said. “That might be a strength for us.” It worked out that way in the regular season for a couple of reasons. “The one major thing is the system is the exact same as the one at Wilkes-Barre,” Orpik said. “Some of the younger guys that come in, there’s really no adjustment. And the guys in this [locker] room make those guys feel really welcome when they come here, try to erase any of the nerves they have and they kind of mesh right in. “That being said the younger guys, it’s tough to name them all but they’ve all come up and done a really good job.” continued on page 62

Another factor has been the persistence and resilience the Penguins have consistently exhibited without Crosby and Malkin, especially by those players who managed to make it through the season in one piece. “I know a lot of people outside the [locker] room were kind of making excuses for us when the two big guys got hurt and just kind of waiting for us to kind of go downhill,” Orpik said. “I think the coaches and players here have done a really good job of keeping those distractions out and just focusing on what we can control. “We really haven’t changed anything systematically without those two guys, but obviously it starts with [goaltender Marc-Andre] Fleury. He’s probably had the best year I’ve seen him have consistently. It’s funny how that works after everyone wanted him traded the first two weeks of the season.” Fleury lost his first three decisions and six of his first seven before finding his game and becoming a stalwart in net upon which the Penguins could lean. They’ve likewise depended heavily on forwards such as Talbot, Pascal Dupuis, Mike Rupp and Craig Adams and defenseman Kris Letang to do what was required on a given night, even if it wasn’t necessarily what they had been asked to do the night before. “Whatever happened, happened,” Talbot said. “We still worked and we still went after it. “We didn’t ask too many questions. We just played.” They’ll take the same approach into the postseason no matter what might be in store. “It’s one of those things, hard to explain until you’ve been around pro hockey,” Adams said. “You just kind of move on and go forward with the pieces that you have on any given night. You just sort of learn to put it out of your mind and just play with what you have.” Despite a rough start, Marc-Andre Fleury had a great season in net.

VIDEO CAMERAS Use of video or audio recording equipment is strictly prohibited. CONSOL Energy Center reserves the right to confiscate any tape or film and remove the patron from the building.

WHEELCHAIRS A limited number of wheelchairs are available for transporting guests that are disabled to their seating location. Guests can be transported from the gates to their seats. On Saturday, October 16, sixteen youth hockey teams from the Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League (PAHL) in the Pee Wee age group (age 11 - 12) participated in a shootout competition at CONSOL Energy Center. The event was videotaped to be shown in episodes at Penguins home games. The first round of competition featured heats between two teams striving to advance to the next round. Sixteen teams fielded five skaters shooting against the opposing team’s goalie. After each team competition, an individual shooter and goaltender squared off against the opposing team’s individual tandem for a one-on-one competition. Each winning team and pair of individuals advanced to the next round of eight teams/tandems. The format repeated as teams and individual pairs advanced through the quarterfinal heats to move on to the semi-finals. Robust competition marked the semi-final round for teams and individual tandems. The remaining two teams and individual tandems then had to “leave it all on the ice” in vying for the championship. Early in the second intermission of each Penguins home game the various heats in the competition will be featured. Enjoy each episode.

2010.11 SEASON NOTES BANNER SEASON The Penguins concluded their 43rd National Hockey League campaign by earning the second-most points (106) and wins (49) in franchise history. Pittsburgh’s 49-25-8 overall record tied for first place in the Atlantic Division (lost the tiebreaker to the Philadelphia Flyers). Pittsburgh’s 106 points were five more than it recorded last season and seven more than the 99 it had during its 2009 Stanley Cup championship season. The Penguins finished with the third-most (tied) points in the NHL and earned the No. 4 seed in the Eastern Conference, earning home-ice advantage in the opening round of the playoffs against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

OVERCOMING ADVERSITY It was a testament to head coach Dan Bylsma, his coaching staff and a total team effort that the Penguins were able to post such a strong regular-season record despite facing plenty of adversity throughout the course of the year, including 350 man-games lost due to injury — the team’s highest total since 2002-03 (410). Included in that total was a combined 119 games missed by the team’s top-three offensive threats in Sidney Crosby (41 games missed), Evgeni Malkin (39) and Jordan Staal (39). Crosby missed the entire second half of the season after being diagnosed with a concussion, while Staal missed the season’s first 39 games following an offseason procedure to repair a foot infection and a broken hand suffered in practice. Malkin suffered a torn ACL and MCL in the second period against Buffalo on Feb. 4, forcing him to miss the final 29 games of the season. Beginning on Jan. 20, the Penguins played 34 of the final 35 games of the season without both Crosby and Malkin. During that stretch the team posted an impressive 20-11-4 (.629 pct.) record. continued on page 115

HOLIDAY WIN SHOPPING The Penguins’ 3-1 defeat of the Vancouver Canucks on Nov. 17 was the beginning of a 12-game winning streak for the team that ranks as the second-longest in team history and tied for the 11th-longest in NHL history. During the streak, which ended with a 5-2 victory at Buffalo on Dec. 11, the Penguins outscored their opponents by a 42-19 margin and held the lead for all but 28:53 minutes of the streak. The only time the Penguins trailed at the end of the first or second period during the streak was a 1-0 deficit at the conclusion of the first period vs. Ottawa on Nov. 26. Sixteen different Penguins scored goals and 21 recorded at least one point during the streak. Sidney Crosby scored 14 of the Penguins’ 42 goals (33.3%).

SID’S SCORING STREAK On Nov. 5, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby scored a pair of goals at Anaheim to begin a career-high 25-game scoring streak that would see the 23-year-old superstar tally 26 goals and 24 assists for 50 points. Crosby’s scoring streak was the longest in the NHL since Quebec’s Mats Sundin had a 30-game point streak in 1992-93. With 26 goals during his streak, Crosby became just the fifth player in NHL history (Wayne Gretzky, Brett Hull, Steve Yzerman and Bryan Trottier) to average at least a goal per game throughout the duration of a scoring streak of 25 games or more. During his streak, which was tied for the 11thlongest point streak in NHL history, Crosby scored at least one goal 18 times, had 16 multiple-point games and led the Penguins to a 19-5-1 record.

DAN THE MAN Pittsburgh’s impressive regular season is a testament to the coaching of head coach Dan Bylsma, who is one of the leading candidates for the Jack Adams Award as NHL coach of the year. Despite his team losing 350 man-games due to injury, Bylsma was still able to guide his team to a second-straight 100-point regular-season finish. Bylsma, who has posted a 114-56-19 record since taking over as head coach on Feb. 15, 2009, became the third-winningest coach in franchise history, surpassing Hall of Famer Scotty

Bowman, with the Penguins’ 1-0 victory over the New York Islanders on Jan. 25. Later in the season, Bylsma became the fifth-fastest coach in NHL history to reach 100 wins (163 games) when the Penguins defeated the Los Angeles Kings, 2-1 in overtime, on Feb. 11.

FLOWER POWER Despite playing behind a depleted lineup for much of the second half of the season, Marc-Andre Fleury was able to put together the finest season of his career with a 36-20-5 record, 2.32 goals-against average and .918 save percentage. Fleury’s outstanding performance earned him the team MVP award and recognition for NHL MVP. Beginning with his 150th career win vs. Tampa Bay on Nov. 12, Fleury posted a 35-14-5 record, 2.13 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage to end the season. Fleury was especially impressive in one-goal games, where he went 21-8-5 with a 2.08 goals-against average and a .926 save percentage. His save percentage in third periods of one-goal games was .935.

For the first time in franchise history, the Penguins finished the regular season with the NHL’s No. 1-ranked penalty killing unit with a success rate of 86.1 percent. Prior to this season the Penguins’ best finish was fourth overall in 1992-93. The Penguins’ 86.1-percent success rate was the second-highest percentage in team history (86.4 percent; 1997-98). The Penguins equaled a franchise record by going nine consecutive games without surrendering an opposition power-play goal from Nov. 13-29 (achieved twice prior: March 29-April 16, 1998; Dec. 13-30, 1996). Led by Pascal Dupuis’ teambest four shorthanded tallies, the Penguins finished the regular season with 13 shorthanded goals, the second-highest total in the NHL behind the New York Islanders (15).

NEW BUILDING, SAME HOME-ICE ADVANTAGE The Penguins opened the brand-new CONSOL Energy Center for the 2010-11 regular season. Groundbreaking began on the state-of-the-art facility on August 14, 2008, and the Penguins took ownership of their new home on August 2, 2010. CONSOL Energy Center features a hockey seating capacity of 18,087 and includes 66 suites, 32 loge boxes and 2,000 club seats. The Penguins played their first-ever regular-season game at CONSOL Energy Center on Oct. 7 when they fell to the Philadelphia Flyers, 3-2. Pittsburgh rebounded from that loss to finish the season with a 25-13-2 home record. Only the Vancouver Canucks (27) and Anaheim Ducks (26) finished with more home wins.

ROAD WARRIORS Once again the Penguins proved to be one of the NHL’s elite road teams, finishing the season with a 24-11-6 road mark — good for 54 points, the fourth-best figure in the NHL. Pittsburgh’s 54 road points established a single-season franchise record, while its 24 wins tied a team record (1992-93). The Penguins equaled a franchise record by winning seven straight road games from Nov. 6-Dec. 11 (also achieved: Oct. 3-Nov. 3, 2009 and March 14-April 9, 1993).

LETANG THRIVES IN INCREASED ROLE Blueliner Kris Letang thrived in his first season as the Penguins’ No. 1 defenseman. Letang, who earned his first All-Star appearance when he was voted in by the fans as a write-in candidate as part of NHL Fan Balloting presented by XM, hit the 50-point mark for the first time in his career by notching eight goals and 42 assists. Letang, who appeared in all 82 games for the first time in his career, led the Penguins in ice time (24:02), power-play points (24) and shots (236). His career-high plus-15 rating led all Pittsburgh D-men.

SELLOUT STREAK ALIVE The Penguins sold out all 40 games at CONSOL Energy Center, the fourth straight season the team has sold out its entire home slate. In the process the Penguins extended the team’s consecutive sellout streak to 206 games (including playoffs) since the streak first began on Feb. 14, 2007 vs. Chicago at Mellon Arena. Since the sellout streak began, 3,565,959 fans have seen the Penguins in action, an average of 17,311 per game. During the streak the Penguins have an overall record of 127-60-19 (.663 pct.). On March 12 against Montreal, the Penguins celebrated the streak’s 200th consecutive sellout.

PRIMETIME CLASSIC The Penguins became the first NHL team to appear in two Winter Classics when they hosted the Washington Capitals in the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic on Jan. 1, 2011 at Heinz Field. Originally slated to be a 1 p.m. start – the game was delayed until 8 p.m. because of weather, making it the first primetime Winter Classic. Despite getting the game’s opening goal off the stick of Evgeni Malkin in the second period, the Penguins fell to the Capitals, 3-1.

REALITY STARS The NHL delved into the reality television world when the Penguins and Washington Capitals co-starred in the four-episode HBO series “24/7 Penguins-Capitals: Road to the NHL Winter Classic.” The hit series, which debuted Dec. 15 at 10 p.m., provided a weekly behind-the-scenes look at both the Penguins and Capitals leading up to the 2011 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic on New Year’s Day at Heinz Field. HBO cameras were given all-access beginning the first week of December and lasting through the Winter Classic.

THE PENGUINS GAME VAULT FEBRUARY 4, 2009 • PENGUINS 4, LIGHTNING 3 OT MELLON ARENA The Pittsburgh Penguins’ playoff hopes were dangling by a thread when the Tampa Bay Lightning paid a visit to Mellon Arena on Feb. 4, 2009. Pittsburgh, which had come within one second and a bounce of the puck from forcing a Stanley Cup Final Game Seven just eight months prior, was mired in a 5-11-1 slump that had the team on the outside looking in at the National Hockey League playoff picture. With just 30 games remaining in the regular season, fans and players were becoming equally frustrating with the inconsistency which plagued the Penguins. Those fears weren’t helped much when the Lightning jumped out to a 3-0 lead after 40 minutes on goals from former Penguin Ryan Malone, Martin St. Louis and Vincent Lecavalier. As the two teams skated to their respective locker rooms for the second intermission, boobirds littered the ice as the home crowd voiced its displeasure with the Penguins’ effort. Whether it was something said by head coach Michel Therrien during the intermission or just the fear of being embarrassed yet again on their home ice, something clicked for the Penguins when they returned for the final period. Less than three minutes into the frame Evgeni Malkin picked off Paul Ranger’s breakout pass at the blue line and set Pascal Dupuis up for a one-timer in the slot. Lightning netminder Mike McKenna denied Dupuis’ shot, but the puck rolled behind him, allowing Malkin to swoop in and score from behind the Evgeni Malkin’s overtime heroics gave net, breathing life into the Penguins, who now the Penguins a 4-3 victory over trailed just 3-1. Tampa Bay on Jan. 4, 2009. A pair of fortunate bounces — the first one a referee’s skate inadvertently keeping the puck in the Lightning zone, and the second a Mark Eaton shot from the far boards caroming off a Tampa Bay defender and into the net — drew the Penguins within one at the 14:09 mark. A little over two minutes later Petr Sykora stunned the Lightning and sent the place into euphoria when he jammed home a power-play goal to tie the game at 3-3. That set the stage for some overtime heroics from Malkin. The league’s leading scorer took a pass in the slot from Jordan Staal with 15.5 seconds in the extra session, and with two defenders surrounding him he one-timed a shot across his body behind McKenna to complete the stunning 4-3 comeback victory. The win began a stretch which saw the Penguins go 21-5-4 over their final 30 games en route to securing a playoff spot and later winning the franchise’s third Stanley Cup championship that June. 120

WHATâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S HAPPENING DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAMS LEARN TO PLAY HOCKEY With the support of Sidney Crosby, Reebok and Dickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sporting Goods over the last three years the Penguins have provided over 2,200 sets of equipment free to local youth ages 4 to 7. This year, four girls-only programs will operate along side of our standard co-ed Little Penguins program. OPEN PRACTICE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation presented the 2010 Pittsburgh Penguins Open Hockey Practice on Thursday, December 9, 2010 at the brand new CONSOL Energy Center. The event offered a rare opportunity for over 10,000 school students in grades one through eight from across Allegheny County to see the Pittsburgh Penguins at work. Students were entertained leading up to the start of practice with informational videos about behind-thescenes aspects of the team/facility, as well as educational elements related to the game (geography, math, etc.) each student received an activity book as a takeaway.

WELLNESS TRAINING K.A.M.P. AT UPMC SOUTHSIDE Presented by UPMC Sports Medicine and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. Young hockey players were divided into groups and performed a rotation of 10-minute drills, while UPMC Sports Medicine professionals provided assessments. While the athletes trained, their parents received lectures on nutrition, concussions and sports injuries in general. Over 150 athletes and parents attended the event.

CONCUSSION PROGRAM The Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation, in conjunction with UPMC Sports Medicine, have announced a comprehensive program for baseline testing and concussion education for all youth sports beginning at the earliest possible ages.

PENGUINS FOUNDATION CHARITY ASSIST RAFFLE The Pittsburgh Penguins and the Penguins Foundation are pleased to host the Penguins Foundation Charity ASSIST Raffle, raising money for a variety of local charities in the western Pennsylvania area. NEW SPORTS INITIATIVES — COMING IN 2011 OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES In its efforts to fight the sedentary tendencies of America’s youth, the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation is excited to offer outdoor programs to promote fun and organized physical activity. The program, to be revealed in January, is designed to take advantage of the growing popularity of hockey in the tri-state area by affording young players access to existing facilities and newly constructed outdoor multi-use athletic facilities. These programs provide safe areas to play games under the supervision of established organizations. SCHOOL PROGRAMS • FIRST STRIDE In the ultimate Field Trip, participating schools will be provided with a Penguins-themed hockey experience: Students will be transported to and from a local ice arena, outfitted in full hockey equipment and learn fundamental hockey skills. The program will conclude with each child scoring their first goal! • GYM CLASS FOR A DAY This program is designed for 4th and 5th grade physical education classes and will provide basic skills and game instruction. Gym Class for a Day will transform your school gymnasium or parking lot into a dek/ball hockey rink. The Penguins will provide equipment for an ongoing P.E. Hockey Program. Penguins staff will be on hand to assist P.E. teachers in demonstrating and administering basic hockey skills and games. Each student will be provided a hockey ball and Penguins t-shirt to take home and continue practicing their skills.

PENGUINS READY TO BREAK IN THE NEW BARN FOR THE PLAYOFFS We’ve seen plenty of firsts in CONSOL Energy Center already this season. Tyler Kennedy scored the first Penguins goal in the new building way back on opening night. Sidney Crosby scored three goals against Calgary for the first-ever hat trick in the new barn. Mike Comrie engaged Montreal’s Maxim Lapierre in some fisticuffs for the first fight on Oct. 9. But nothing will compare to this next first — the first-ever playoff games in CONSOL Energy Center. “Coming to the rink today it dawned on me that we have to break this building in for the playoffs,” head coach Dan Bylsma said prior to the Penguins’ final regular-season home game against New Jersey on April 4, a 4-2 Pittsburgh victory. “We’re getting ready to christen this one for our first playoff home game.” The Penguins have developed

a great playoff atmosphere in the past few years after going all the way to the Stanley Cup Final in both 2008 and 2009. But those games were all held at Mellon Arena, a building in which the Penguins were certainly comfortable winning games, as it had served as their home since 1967. While the team has yet to experience the playoff atmosphere at CONSOL Energy Center, this year’s Penguins have ironed out the kinks and have adjusted to their beautiful 18,087-seat arena. “We didn’t get the wins [in CONSOL Energy Center] right off the hop,” Bylsma said. “But we have turned this place into a place where we know we can get wins. We’ve won a lot of hockey games here, up at the tops in the league.” continued on page 147

In fact, through the first 80 games of the regular season, the Penguins were tied for second place for the most home victories, trailing only the President’s Trophy-winning Vancouver Canucks. Penguins netminder Marc-Andre Fleury gives the fans much of the credit. “They’ve given us great support, like always,” Fleury said. “It’s been amazing how many sellout crowds we’ve had in a row. I think that just shows the support they give us night after night. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Tuesday or a Saturday, it’s always fun to play here because it’s always full and we’ve got the crowd on our side, so it’s good times.

The players list tremendous fan support in Pittsburgh as a reason for their success at CONSOL Energy Center this season.

“I think we had some good games and good wins and it’s been going well here at home. So it will be nice to try it out in the playoffs also.” Forward Chris Kunitz also couldn’t say enough about what the support from the seventh man has meant to the team — especially if there’s a seventh game. “Our fans are a great asset to have in a game to get you that emotion when it’s lacking or in a lull in the game,” he said. “It’s an important emotional push for your team. It’s nice to have home-ice advantage in case you need that for a seventh game.” The fans are a main reason that these playoff games are even happening. Five years ago, the Penguins hadn’t seen the postseason since 2001 and the team was facing possible relocation. But thanks to the management and the fantastic fan support, continued on page 149

CONSOL Energy Center was built and the inaugural regular season is already in the books. “It flew by,” Pascal Dupuis said.”But we know we’ll come back here in front of our fans in playoffs and this building’s going to be rocking.” Fleury agreed, saying “It’s a long season, sometimes it gets tough, but it’s pretty crazy we’re here already.” And with the success that the Penguins have found at their home arena, they are hoping to use that advantage to earn their historic first playoff victory in the new barn. “I think we’ve seen it in the past playoffs, how big it is, how big of an advantage [the home crowd] is,” Fleury said. “We’ve got great fans and a good record at home,” Mike Comrie said. Of course, none of that matters if the team isn’t firing on all cylinders — since their opponent would love nothing more than to spoil these historic games. But the Penguins believe they are hitting their stride at the right time, even without some key players in the lineup. “I think our defense has played as a five-man unit — it’s as good as it’s been all year,” Letestu said. “Fleury is playing as good as he has all year at the right time. We’re getting timely goals. I think right now we’re comfortable with the team we are and the way we’re playing. “I think it’s going to cause some success in the playoffs.”

Some of the best high school hockey players in the country will be coming to Pittsburgh April 13-17 to compete in USA Hockey’s America’s Showcase, presented by 84 Lumber and hosted by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League for the second-straight year. Pittsburgh will have two teams in the showcase, with all players competing in the PIHL. Those two teams will be among the high school all-star teams from across the country competing at RMU Island Sports Center. The five-day tournament, formerly known as the Chicago Showcase, gives more than 300 players a chance to perform in front of scouts from every major hockey institution across the country, including NCAA Division I and III scouts and scouts from the United States Hockey League, North American Hockey League and the Eastern Junior Hockey League. Teams representing Michigan, New York, New Jersey, Northern New England, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Florida, Utah, Texas, Washington, Kentucky and West Virginia are among those scheduled to compete. Tickets for the tournament will be sold at the door. Daily passes will be available for $8 for adults and $6 for high school students. Event passes, which will be valid for the entire tournament, will also be available for $25 for adults and $15 for high school students. Children under 5 years of age are free. WB/S: WHAT A BANNER SEASON!

THEY HAVE THE FRANCHISE’S BEST RECORD, AND THE AMERICAN HOCKEY LEAGUE’S BEST RECORD. They did it without three of their top five scorers in the second half of the season, they did it with the league’s best goaltender, and all while guided by the talent of the league’s most outstanding head coach. And they still have one more goal to go: the elusive Calder Cup. The 2010-11 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins set goals at the beginning of the season, and have steadily been checking them off of the list. As the final weekend of the Penguins’ 12th American Hockey League regular season draws to a close, the team finds itself in a position unlike never before. The playoff schedules will be made this week, and for once, the WB/S Penguins are the definite instead of the uncertainty. The squad will have home-ice advantage for as long as it can succeed. And even though the WB/S Penguins will not have Dustin Jeffrey, Nick Johnson or Eric Tangradi available to them, with all due respect to the three gifted forwards, the team is still performing exceptionally well — both now, and compared to what happened in 2010. One year ago, the Penguins were in a battle with the now-defunct Albany River Rats, just a few weeks removed from a jousting match involving three other teams just to qualify for the postseason. Thirteen of those Albany players stuck with the organization in its move to North Carolina this year to become the AHL version of the Charlotte Checkers. The WB/S Penguins took care of the Checkers handily this regular season, finishing with a mark of 7-1-0-0. Up until last week, the Checkers seemed to have a good grip on third place in the East Division, with the Norfolk Admirals and Binghamton Senators the ones jockeying for position along with earning the daunting task of facing the Penguins in the opening round of the playoffs. Norfolk actually entered the final weekend of the regular season with games in hand on the Senators (the team closest to bumping them down in the division) as well as on the Connecticut Whale and Worcester Sharks (the Atlantic Division teams in danger of being pushed back by the American Hockey League’s “crossover rule”) and a chance to overtake Charlotte for third place. But an overtime loss at Binghamton on Wednesday coupled with a brutal loss at already-eliminated Syracuse on Thursday kept the Admirals floating on changing ground. The countdown to the end of the regular season in any hockey league never seems to go by without mystery and surprise. One surprise to many fans of both the Pittsburgh Penguins’ and Carolina Hurricanes’ organizations was the Hurricanes’ decision to keep Charlotte leading scorer continued from page 173

the National Hockey League and thus off of the Checkers’ playoff roster on “Clear Day.” Still, talented forwards Zach Boychuk, Zac Dalpe, Jonathan Matsumoto, Jacob Micflikier and Chris Terry are a big threat with their speed, tenacity, and aggressive offensive play the biggest common denominator. As the least-likely Penguins’ opponent in the opening round next weekend, Charlotte could get no further “help” from the Hurricanes. Norfolk, winners of the first three meetings against the Penguins in the regular season, dropped the last five games in the series and has been hit with some injuries. With their parent Tampa Bay Lightning playing catch-up to Pittsburgh over the last few weeks but already locked into a playoff spot, the Admirals may see some players embark on a taxi squad to give the Lightning some extra legs — an obvious benefit to the Penguins, if such players included names like Johan Harju, Blair Jones, Marc-Antoine Pouliot, or Mattias Ritola. Thanks to an impressive run of 18-11-0-1 in its last 30 games, beginning with a 2-1 win over the WB/ SPenguins on January 29, the Binghamton Senators The Stellar Play of Brad Thiessen was a contributing factor to the success this season of the WB/S Penguins.

The Senators, led by goaltender Ray Emery and forwards Chris Kelly, Josh Langfeld, Jason Spezza and Antoine Vermette, were the all-out favorite until Colby Armstrong sent the former Wachovia Arena at Casey Plaza into a frenzy with a triple-overtime goal on April 25, 2005, setting off a string of four straight wins and an elimination of one of the deadliest AHL teams in history. This season’s Senators are the talk of the division — and the team that nobody really wants to face, with talent such as rookie sniper Bobby Butler, AHL Most Valuable Player Corey Locke, Jim O’Brien, Colin Greening, and Kaspars Daugavins in the lineup. The Penguins finished this record-setting season with a losing mark against just two teams: the Connecticut Whale (0-2-0-0, NY Rangers), and the Senators (3-5-0-0). But with all the momentum going into the middle of April, and the entire Penguins’ organization in the playoffs and poised for long runs, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins may very well be on their way to hoisting the most meaningful banner possible and making 2010-11 a true banner season.
